Tuesday scent of the day 5/28

Posted by Robin on 28 May 2019 187 Comments

Tuesday, plus Hamburger Day. Birthdays today: Walker Percy, Maeve Binchy, Gladys Knight. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, and I'm getting ready to head to the beach. Tea at the moment is Panyang Congou Supreme from Upton.

Reminder: on 5/31, for World No Tobacco Day, compensate by wearing something smoky (it doesn't have to smell like tobacco in particular).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Big Be-Bop Travel Tea Pot ("A compact and really convenient personal brewing pot for tea drinkers on the move. The pot's snuggly fitting lid doubles as a cup – perfectly sized to hold an entire steep. Thanks to a built-in strainer, leaves are left in the pot ready-to-steep for multiple infusions.") is $58 at Beautyhabit.

SOTD = Kyoto. Not exactly smoky, but if I squint I can see incense fitting the CP. 🙂

Lubin Le Vetiver. A smoky vetiver with tobacco. From Lubin website: “Le Vetiver sparks a desire for crackling fires, whilst recapturing the scent of the frankincense that burned in the cathedrals of the Middle Ages, where one came to warm up around the braziers.”

I must say I found Le Vetiver greener and fresher than the description implies. But there’s smoke and tobacco. For me, it turned out be an almost-but-not-quite-right perfume – very good almost all the time, but with one unpleasant note that emerged at some point and, forunately, disappeared later.
I think vetiver fans should try it!

Serge Lutens Cracheuse de Flammes (from a generous sample poured by a saleswoman at Ogilvy). Not gonna lie: it’s SPECTACULAR, probably the best rose scent Lutens ever made.

At first, anyway. It dies a quick death, faded to a whisper within an hour or so. It’s completely front-loaded, but even if it were built like a classic Lutens scent, it still wouldn’t be worth the insane $800 CAD he’s charging for it. I can’t think of anything that would be, but certainly not this.

It’s so good, though, while it lasts.

That is a crazy price! I wonder if people who buy super expensive perfume actually wear it? Or do they just collect it?

I doubt normal people would even consider buying such a thing: you could buy an awful lot of perfume for that price, and it’s not the kind of thing that people decide they must own at all costs: it’s just a good rose scent. I expect it’s bought by people who can afford it without thinking about it and are titillated by the indefensible price — in other words, the people who will spend $2800 on a 16-ounce jar of La Mer — who will wear it a few times before it sits ignored on the shelf.

Testing out some samples from Luckyscent today, Camel on one hand and MDCI Nuit Andalouse on the other. Not in love with either, but a shower is coming up. Other samples from the same order that I think will need to turn into full bottles are Neela Vermeire Niral and Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum, both love at first sniff. And maybe 4160 Tuesdays Sunshine and Pancakes. It smelled very sharp at first, but in a few minutes turned into a beautiful jasmine.

Hilda Soliani Untitled #7. Gorgeous citrusy opening and then… it became a terrifying vanilla/muks bomb that gets stronger as hours pass. As usual, I sprayed on my clothes, so now I have to endure the punishment until I get home tonight. First and last wear from half a sample that I received not long time ago. I am so happy that this is gone! The best THUNK of the year, so far!

Today I am wearing a tobacco scent, Diptyque Volutes, the EDT version. I own the EDP also and plan to compare them later today, since it’s been awhile since I did that. I think this is a case where we really can distinguish between the tobacco element and a “smoke” note or aspect. It’s a beautiful fragrance but right now this morning it’s striking me as just too sweet. However, I suspect the EDT concentration, being lighter, will fade in awhile into something I’ll feel happier with.

Working my way through a Bon Parfumeur Discovery Set.

Today I am comparing these two:

101 – Rose, Sweet Pea and White Cedar
    102 – Tea, Cardamom, Mimosa

Both are nice florals…very spring-like but alas no vanilla in either to my nose. I am so used to vanilla in the forefront or in the background that I kind of get anxious when it doesn’t show up at some point. ? deep breaths…ahhahaha.

Hamburger day makes me think of that Popeye character that loved hamburgers and would say “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Does anyone else remember that?
My favorite hamburger is homemade off the grill. My husband has perfected them over the years. I’m also quite fond of Culver’s butter burgers.?
I was looking on luckyscent’s website for smoky fragrances and I’m guessing I don’t really like smoky notes in my perfumes since I recognized several fragrances that I’ve had samples of and gave away in freebiemeets. I do have one lined up for Friday though!

I didn’t know what to wear today so I took inspiration from Sapphire’s post and wore Niral. I’ve been meaning to give it a second wearing for a while now. It’s just ok. It is similar to Mohur, and I find Mohur much more interesting. Well, I shouldn’t have any trouble swapping my decant at the next swap meet.

Tonight I’m going to a concert so I’ll need to keep my energy up today. I am going in to work around lunch time tomorrow so I can sleep in and recover.

Well I don’t know if they were supposed to be similar, but I find them similar in style. They both have a radiant quality. But I find Mohur to have much more character than Niral, at least on my skin. In fact, 5 hours later I really can’t smell it at all. It starts out smelling nice enough but it just doesn’t last on me.

Tea: PG Tips, since I had heard so much about it in the books by British authors that I read. Weaker than Numi’s Breakfast Blend, but the directions on the PG Tips box said to let it steep for 1-3 minutes, and I did 2 1/2 minutes. The Breakfast Blend calls for 4-5 minutes to steep. The PG Tips tea tastes fine to me, though.

Later: Scent of the Day — C.O. Bigelow Lemon EdT(?). Inspired by the smell of the lotion, quite close to that, I think. So, pleasant for me, nice and light.

In the evening: Experiments with smokiness, with a favorite of Luca Turin’s, HdP 1740. I believe it marks the birth date of the Marquis de Sade. Smoke, leather, all the spices Mom most loathes, from patchouli to coriander. Fortunately, I managed to spray it relatively lightly. I washed it off before I came downstairs, because apparently I’m not sadistic. 😉

I could imagine that that was what a gentleman’s club might smell like. While I could see why some men and some women (and perhaps some non-binary folks) would enjoy a cologne like that, it’s definitely not for me or this household. Remind me to put that sample in the giveaway pile.

On the plus side, the tobacco-scented part of the fragrance didn’t give me a coughing fit, possibly because I’d already taken my allergy medicine for the day. Or possibly because it wasn’t actually tobacco being burned. The association with leather that’s become ingrained with smoke and manly spices was clear to me. I’m not sure what “immortelle” smells like, but if there were flowers, they were like a chrysanthemum or marigold (Tagetes) effect.

I hope the 1740 sample finds a home with someone who will appreciate it.

I know many here are tea fans. Where do you get Mariage Freres tea? I had some a while back at a lovey tea and want to get some. I know it can be gotten by mail from Luckyscent. Any reccomendations for near SF? If not, then any mail places with no shipping? I hope this ok to ask here, if not apologies.

Cultured Cup in Texas, and I think they do free shipping from time to time.

Best price though is to find someone to split an order from MF overseas, unless they’ve changed the shipping fee. My memory is that it would seem crazy high, but then the tea was much cheaper than here, and if you could split the shipping fee with someone you still came out ahead, plus could order all sorts of things they don’t have in the US.

    Am in Amelie Mae!

Twins with Robin today…..don’t think that’s ever happened? I’m enjoying Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess too….

I’m post-graduation (my oldest!) and post-company visiting, AND my other 2 kiddies have gone to visit their grandparents for 2 whole weeks! I feel like I’m on vacation in my own home! (Keep in mind that my hubs is in Africa for another 4 weeks too…) I don’t know what to do with myself, and I can wear any perfume I love at home….LOL

Lest I get bored though, my furry son Chewy decided to dig out and go on his own adventure yesterday, instead of hang out with me. Boy was he glad to be back home to AC and water when we finally wrangled him up! 🙂 https://www.instagram.com/p/ByAjkDFBCNC/

What is wrong with all you stuffed-nosed surfeit of sniffing wisdom-mongers?

Jardins de Bagatelle is a great perfume. Okay, so wearing it evokes images of 1980s Gunne Sax dresses– but it is so pretty. This cheap as chips underappreciated mutton-sleeved perfume wonder should not be missed.

    Get with the program guys!!!

Time to look for an inexpensive replacement bottle. Just emptied my second mini of the juice.

For those of you too young for the Gunne Sax reference (80s trigger warning!: I strongly advise those of you who were in high school in the 80s not to click on this link 😉 Okay. But you’ve been warned.) see: https://clickamericana.com/topics/beauty-fashion/gunne-sax-prom-dresses-eighties

I always wanted a Gunne Sax dress, but my mom was horrified by the price–so mine were all knock-offs. I sort of feel the 70s ones were somehow more legit than the 80s, which had to combine prairie with Studio 54!

Totally off topic, but are any Bay Area/Sacramento folks perhaps looking for a very cute kitten? My neighbor found one and is raising her (we’re not 100% sure on the “her”) and would like to find her a good home. 5 weeks old or so, not afraid of dogs, spunky tuxedo. I can send pics!

I’m part of the crowd of folks who are having gloomy, cloudy weather. A band of rain passed through this morning, but more weather is expected for later on. And a tornado watch has been issued until 10pm tonight. Bleck. ?

Robin, fighter pilots DO wear hearing protection in their planes. Given how noisy those engines are, I can’t figure how on earth the pilot’s compartment could ever be adequately sound proofed enough to be safe.

Mr. Jalapeno comes home today! I have been tracking his flight this afternoon. He is scheduled to land in Philly during the evening rush.✈

SOTD = Guerlain Chamade EdT, from the sample stash. This isn’t quite fitting the day or my mood. And for some odd reason, it is skewing sweet on me, which has never happened before. Weird.

I am wearing Enchanted Forest for the second day. This is from Gaynor’s sample stash and so far I have liked all three of the perfumes I’ve tried: Civet, Hyde and this one. I really like EF around the two hour mark, when it softens slightly and is less sweet. I really like the interpretation of the ‘ forest’. I compared it to Blackbird and EF is much smoother and twinkly/ dappled, like the light filtering through tall trees. Unfortunately, it would cost $365 to get a bottle from Lucky Scent ( exchange rate and postage ) so I am trying to find fault with it. But the bottle is cute looking. I am getting nervous about the rest of the sample bag. Anyway, proof that we all have different tastes when it comes to perfume. Gaynor’s generous loss is my gain. Did I say I really like Enchanted Forest? Sigh.

This morning’s scent was CBIHP I Am A Dandelion, which smells like dandelions and dirt. Childhood memories of digging up dandelions in the yard.

This afternoon I’m sampling Clive Christian C, which is so not my thing by the notes, but I find it surprisingly attractive. Kooky the cat likes it enough to lick it, but then that is often his perfume verdict.

Sotd is the ever lovely AC Sous Le toit de Paris. I love this one from beginning to end ❤️ I’m in the dry down which is a woody violet on a bed of soft leather.
Robin, have a wonderful time at the beach!

Caron pour un Homme. We went to Neuf-Brisach and visited the gorgeous fortifications.
Today i got the news, that the manager of my new employers supposedly went crazy and killed his wife and one son, the other Son survived…. What a shock, i could hardly believe it, but it has been confirmed

Wearing some Prada Infusion d’Iris cedre from my mini. Fragrantica says its smoky, but I’m not detecting any undertone. Just a lovely scent though.

    Happy Tuesday all!
