Thursday scent of the day 5/23

Posted by Robin on 23 May 2019 189 Comments

Almost-Friday, and World Turtle Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Chanel Cristalle, the original Eau de Toilette, 1974, for Bob Dylan You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, from Blood on the Tracks, 1975. (It is number 56 on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 best Bob Dylan songs, and for those of you who hate Dylan's voice, here are great covers by Shawn Colvin, Madeleine Peyroux and Ben Watt. It's also on the bonus disc for the Elvis Costello album Kojak Variety, but I can't find it online.)

Reminder: 5/24 is Bob Dylan's birthday. Match a fragrance to a Bob Dylan song, OR, tell us who YOUR favorite musical artist is and match a fragrance to one of his/her/their songs.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Song of the day: Bob Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower
Scent of the day: Tom Ford Noir de Noir

The connection is the dark intensity with undertones of anxiety present in both the song and the scent. Also, boozy rose and earthy patchouli in this perfume remind me of the following lines:
    “Businessmen, they drink my wine
    Plowmen dig my earth”

House twins with Robin in Chanel 19. I came close to wearing Cristalle today as well, but at the last second my hand decided otherwise, and it’s probably just as well since my work life will be uber-stressful until the end of May. Breathing deeply and trying to keep my head on straight. :)

Ah, thank you. I found it at a very small antique store. They must have gotten an estate from a lady who loved her perfume because I got a mostly full bottle of Gio, Tresor, Jil Sander’s No. 9 and Diva.

I did spot a sealed 100ml bottle recently but they were asking maybe $150? I’m not sure that’s much less than the eBay price and anyway was more than I’m usually willing to spend.

            Passes you a virtual one.
You would love this place near the farmers market. I go in the morning and there is a small french bakery, and when they are opening the store the pain au chocolat is coming right out oven. Its so delicious. I feel like now a days everything is made outside, and few places bake their goods in house.

You are so right about the supremacy of baked goods made on site! Mr. Spicebomb and I were in search of pastries somewhere and ended up at a Starbucks out of desperation. . . I asked if they had any more of something, and the woman pulled out a box, just like you’d find in the cookies aisle at a grocery store, and asked me how many I wanted. I mean, I *know* each franchise isn’t baking their own goodies every day, but something about the lack of SHAME she had for the sourcing of it!!! It really turned me off, and I decided I didn’t need a baked good, after all.

Well, I have a two scents going on right now: I sprayed Bvlgari Magnolia Sensuel this morning as my SOTD, then I proceeded to break my sample of Phlur Siano when I dropped it. I picked up the broken bottle pieces, so now my hands and room smell like Siano.

Accidental turned slightly intentional pairing of Bvlgari Pour Femme and Bronze Goddess—I now smell how I aspire the weather to be–not a cloud in the sky and pavement warming sunshine. Instead? It is cold, grey, and blech. I’ll defer to the Nobel laureate:

    So long honey babe
    Where I’m bound, I can’t tell
Goodbye is too good a word, babe
So I just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

Aedes de Venustas for a sunny day that has a high of 75. My travel spray caught my eye and I realized how long it’s been since I’ve worn it. Wearing another long dress today in celebration of the weather, even though I’ll be inside an office building all day. I got out for a 10 minute walk yesterday afternoon, so I’ll aim for that today. Still haven’t figured out my scent and song pairing for tomorrow though I’ve had a few ideas.

I’m wearing Perfumer H Orange Leaf. I thought it would pair nicely with the spicy-herbal scent of a new hairspray I’m trying out today.

And the World is Yours from A Lab On Fire. Off to a rough start this morning, someone made a mess of my desk at work after I left yesterday. Things are missing, turned over, and all out of order like there was a police raid or something. This is why I have so much nice stationary just being hoarded, because I work with a bunch of animals! Just gonna sip my coffee until I’m less annoyed.

Wow. That’s absurd what happened to your desk! Do you have to share a workspace, or do people just disrespect individual property?

The first school I worked in had communal office spaces, where the teachers’ desks were in hubs or “neighborhoods.” As the new guy, my desk was closest to the copy machines, and things were constantly going missing–pens, 3-hole punchers, sticky notes, etc. I had to tuck everything away after each use to avoid having stuff wander off.

It’s semi-shared, I guess? It’s mine when I’m here and the phone goes to a voicemail with my specific voicemail but we’re still open for 6 hours after I leave so people will use my computer for orders ect. Which is fine, just don’t tornado through the drawers!

Wow. That reminds me of a story I heard some while back. It was an interview with one of the guys from Flock of Seagulls, I think, and they were talking about how no one really knew what to do with music videos or how it was going to change the music scene. So, when they showed up to the set, they hadn’t done anything to their hair. The producer stuck some gel in it, to do *something* different, and that became their signature look!

Makes me laugh to think how green and naive that makes them sound, compared to the uber-produced bands and images we have today. IMO, your video link screams “let’s do this cuz it will look cool” in the same way as Flock of Seagulls hair.

There is a funny Flight of the Conchords episode where they get some hair gel and become cool…and the run out of gel. Worth watching if you remember the 80s

It grows on evergreens and oaks, it’s ubiquitous up here. There are people that forage and sell it. Not sure if it’s edible? Can’t imagine why people would buy it, but it probably has some uses I’m totally unaware of. I thought it was no longer used in perfumery, but I’m probably wrong. According to wiki, it smells different depending on which species of tree is hosting it: “Oakmoss growing on pines have a pronounced turpentine odor that is valued in certain perfume compositions”

No SOTM, yet. I’m slow-moving this morning. Slept nearly 11 hours last night, and I feel like I need more. All this sitting around is wearing me out!

Verdict on yesterday’s YO6-S: didn’t like the “banana” at the top, the electroncis smell intrigued me but is not really me, and then it settled into a faint, safe floral for the remaining few hours. So, I’m grateful I didn’t blindbuy a bottle when it was the topic of conversation here and then there was a magic sale at Luckyscent. Likely, I will try another Blackbird sample today.

It would be nice to support a “local” (well, PNW, anyway) perfumer. I always feel more sheepish when I don’t like the fragrances of folks I might actually encounter at an event or something!

I didn’t love any of the Blackbird perfumes except Targa. I liked Anemone. It was their incense that got me (and my money) good! I have the Targa incense which is great, too.

This has been my 6th time under anesthesia, and I have learned that it leaves me sleepy pretty much every time! It surprises me, though, how inconsistent my energy is–I’m feeling good, then I’m totally exhausted, with very little time in between. Hard to guage what “enough” is under those circumstances.

And there’s something so wonderful and comforting about “milky” notes in perfume. The only Jo Malone I *nearly* purchased was a limited edition “milk” scent that was supposed to be layered with their limited edition tea line. . . but it was just too faint to justify the money, imo.

Song of the Day is “Jammin’ Me” by Tom Petty. It was co-written by Bob Dylan. That’s as close as I can get to the CP today.

It’s been a crazy day so far. I was up at 4am to take Mr. Jalapeno to the airport. (I did not need to get up quite that early, but for whatever reason, my body decided otherwise.) He had an 8am flight that was, unfortunately, delayed. So we could have slept a little later, had we known. I did have a nap after getting back from the airport, but don’t really feel rested. Pretty sure my circadian rhythm is a little scrambled from all the hijinks.

Hello NSTers. I am reporting from Positano, Italy! I ended up hiking a good part of the Path of the Gods and cut it off at Nocelle as the next segment would have been some 1,000 steps down (uh-uh). I took the bus from Nocelle to Positano and walked to the hotel. Total steps almost 19,000, “floors” 60?. To say I was exhausted was an understatement! NB for jalapeño – no, I don’t have a step count reward goal this time around; however, if I lose 5 pounds from all these walking and hiking, I may reward myself with something special.

Today was a free day (I think we all needed the rest) and we spent the day in Capri. We took a high speed ferry from Positano to Capri Island, took the funicular to Anacapri, then a chairlift up to the top of the island – the views were stunning! We shared a cab ride back to the marina with 2 ladies from Austria and for some recommendations if I decide to go to Austria one of these days.

After reading the hiking directions for tomorrow I have decided to skip it and will decide what to do.

Since my Friday is arriving sooner than most, I decided to participate in the Community Project today! SOTD = Atelier Cedrat Enivrant and Bergamot Soleil. These scents are perfect for this part of Italy, with lemon groves all over. The tie in is Beyonce’s “Upgrade U” which mentions something about island hopping off the Amalfi Coast. I am so not into Beyoncé and only knew of her tie in with Capri when my sister made an off-hand comment about wondering where Beyonce’s yacht docks. I’ve never heard the song and reading the lyrics were just ummm, not very coherent.

Tomorrow, we move to a B&B at the Marina del Cantone which happens to house a 1 Michelin star restaurant. We have reservations!

‘Til the next time…Friday is coming sooner than you think!

Some of the Pacifica perfumes are back on their website. Not sure if it will be for a limited time.

Long day today. The memorial day shoppers are out in full force. I wore Superstitious, and matched it to the song Can’t you hear me Knocking. This song was featured in the movie Casino. I think Sharon Stone would have worn Superstitious at the beginning of the movie.

Put on L’Attesa from my purse stash tonight. I have a few sprays left in my sample; more is more with this one. Might need another decant soon!

    Happy Almost Friday, everyone.

You smell great! I’m the opposite with L’attesa, I under spray.

Thanks lillyjo! It’s a great fragrance.

I seem to be an over-sprayer usually; go big or go home!

Spent the day in Ineke Gilded Lily. Now have Zoologist Camel on right arm, Chameleon on left.

Looking forward to 3 days off! Then next weekend I have 5 days in a row (going to San Diego for a wedding). Woo!

Enjo your trip to San Diego! What perfumes are you taking with you and what will you wear on the wedding day?

Dress is a cap sleeve, fit-and-flare to the knees in a blue that doesn’t have a standardized name: it’s not dark enough to be navy, it’s not royal, it’s a bit dusty, not bright, not light, not teal… very pretty though and great with my coloring!

For the perfume wardrobe, I haven’t figured that one out yet. I have a load of samples, purse sprays, and some empty 5ml sprays ready to be decanted into.

Wedding is late afternoon into evening at a rural rustic chic venue. Rehearsal the night before is more casual: a beach side Mexican restaurant. Recommendations welcome if anyone’s got ‘em!
