Wednesday scent of the day 5/8

Posted by Robin on 8 May 2019 178 Comments

Hump Day, Iris Day and World Red Cross Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue.

Reminder: on 5/10, wear a fragrance by Heeley, Hiram Green, Histoires de Parfums or Honoré des Prés, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter H.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from the set design for Prada's Spring Summer 2019's Men's show at Via Fogazzaro, Milan; you can read more here.

I love it too! I have a large decant and I am resisting the temptation of getting a full bottle because FragranceNet (no affiliation) has it on sale now, plus the 37% discount code. It is a 127 ml bottle, but still a bit pricey for me now. Maybe for my birthday at the end of the year.

I ordered a sample of this mostly because I thought the name was silly (I think of Syracuse as a down-to-earth Northeastern down, decidedly unFrench), but I really like it too!

Oh, if I had known that it would have been Bas de Soie.

But it’s a sample of Ormonde Man thanks to a generous swapper. I may need a bottle of this.

I’m enjoying this weeks project as I like both houses. I chose HdP 1876 (Mata Hari) for today which is a lovely spicy rose. Luca calls it a Victorian dandy fragrance. It has a nice soothing presence.

    Tea is MF Russian breakfast.

Aren’t all of the perfumes in this series associated with the year of birth? It’s not that recognized it, I just know it from the description of the series that I read a while ago, and that I find annoying: why on Earth would I want to know/remember, for example, Casanova’s year of birth?!

Trying two Heeley scents today: Esprit du Tigre and Cuir Pleine Fleur, both mentioned here this week.

Esprit du Tigre. Definitely smells medicinical to me (although I have never tried Tiger Balm, so I cannot compare). I like the mint note,
but overall I find EdT a bit too camphorous. But I think its time is November – February, so maybe May is just the wrong time of the year for trying it. An interesting and unusual scent.

Cuir Pleine Fleur. What an elegant leather/suede fragrance! The florals are in the background but are still quite noticeable. Kind of like sitting on a front seat of the car trimmed with leather and suede, with a bunch of spring flowers lying on the parcel shelf. While I still think that Cuir de Russie is the most elegant leather scent, this one is also very good. Besides, in my opinion, CdR is an oriental leather for fall, and CPF is a floral suede leather for spring. I like it. Maybe a decant later.

Cuir Pleine Fleur is lovely! It will be my Friday scent. If you ever do decide to spring for more than a decant, I’ll just mention that Heeley’s sprayers are great – very very fine mist in a nice round pattern.

That’s good to hear about the nice sprayers. Can you twist off the top for easy decanting? That’s always a huge bonus.

Accidentally celebrating Iris Day in Le Galion Iris. It’s very spring-y and fresh, and it’s going to be a gorgeous day here. I should go outside and check on my Japanese irises – over the weekend I noticed shoots coming up, but I don’t know if there are buds yet.

    Hello everyone!

Working on my day off, after a night of flood warnings. I can’t wait to be back in bed! I went with Vanille Galante today, a sleeper favorite in my collection. Sadly it’s one of the most evanescent. Regardless, it is pure joy as long as it lasts.

You all are so sweet. I’m doing ok mostly. We keep remembering he’s not with us anymore and it can be hard, like when we got some medication for him we had ordered a couple weeks ago, or like when we got a reminder for his annual check-up. So I’m sad and mopey and tired a lot (oh right, I had forgotten how exhausting it is to be sad all the time), but really, I’m pretty much ok.

    You smell charming, Robin.
I’m in Masque Milano Kintsugi – it starts with a lovely and dewy, spring-like magnolia flower and then it evolves, becomes a chypre – more raspy, with an earthy patchouli. Violet leaf and suede are blended together in a beautiful way here. And that benzoin in the drydown is so delightful.

My dog is the opposite. She’s probably too much of a guard dog. Although it was super cute last night when I was surprised by a big scary spider in the kitchen and yelled. She came running in, barked at the spider and then crushed it with her paws.

Completely off topic in Chanel 5 Eau Premiere, which I got in an awesome deal on ebay (It’s pretty easy to find this for a good price anyway, but I really wanted one of those twist and spray ones) – I just love this! The Chanel 5 version for warmer weather for me (I find L’eau very pretty but a bit more generic).

Now that I’ve tried it, I know how good you smell. I might wear it tomorrow. If not, probably this weekend. We’re going to see Endgame on Saturday, and I could see this being a good companion scent in a 3 hour movie.

If I had known it was iris day I would have gone with something else, but I chose Carven Le Parfum this morning. It’s a little too clean for me to really love, but I’ll get through this mini eventually.

I say the same thing about several fragrances- too clean for me to love. I actually said as I was perfume shopping with a friend one day, “no, I don’t like that. I don’t like to smell clean,” LOL. Which of course, i do, but you know what I mean…

SOTD = Chanel Bois des Iles EDT

This has everything including the kitchen sink ?, with a predominant gorgeous sandalwood note. I wore 5 sprays to last me all day.

    In other news, I recently ordered a bunch of stuff from Best Buy and had to return some of them because, as it turned out, I did not need one of them, the other one did not fit where I wanted it to go and the third item was useless without a subscription and this information was not conveyed to me at the time of purchase. I did not expect any problems with the first two because they were still sealed;
however, the 3rd one was opened and I was ready to do battle because it was unsealed by a Geek Squad team member who ended up not being able to help me. I had my boxing gloves on ready to do battle but as it turned out, it was an easy peasy return experience. I had low expectations of customer service in general but while this incident did not restore my faith in C/S, it moved the needle positively! With my choice of a good number of places to purchase similar items in the future, I will stick with Best Buy as it is convenient and they were very accommodating!

Greetings! I received my Olympic Orchids order today. A bottle of Woodcut, inspired by the installation of a new wood fence, maybe the most perfect incarnation of wood/vanilla that I have encountered, never venturing into the too sweet. A travel size of Hamsa, a wonderful exploration of tree resins and citrus. If you have huffed a lot of essential oils, then you already know that pine resins, in particular, have quite a bit of naturally occurring citrus in their profiles. Of course my order came with samples and Kilauea is gorgeous, a olfactive rendering of standing by a volcano amongst all the damp flora of Hawaii.

As mentioned yesterday, I’m in Hiram Green Dilettante today, taking advantage of a co-worker’s day off with a big perfume. Sadly, my favorite HG perfumes are too big to wear to work most days. I know I’ve worn Moon Bloom in before, but I think I was self conscious about it.

I am having vacation planning and scheduling difficulties. The boyfriend and I are going to Portland for a weekend in August because both his dad and my brother, who both live in Ohio, will coincidentally be there at the same time. So we have been planning to spend time right after that at the Oregon coast since we’ll already be down there. Nothing has been booked yet.

Then I found out last month that one of my closest friends is getting married in Chicago two weekends after our Portland weekend. I mentioned it to my mom, who lives in Ohio, and she asked if she could drive to Chicago (about 4.5 hours) to hang out with me. I had a not good family trip in Chicago two years ago, and in fact, another bad family trip there 12 years ago, plus I have another friend there to visit with. So I’d really rather not hang with my mom there. We bounced around the idea of her coming to pick me up and take me to Ohio. I thought I could see some friends while I’m there if I do that. However, one of my friends is a teacher and will likely already be back to work so will be busy and unavailable during the day.

Long story basically just to say that if I spend a whole week between Ohio and Chicago, I’ll almost be out of vacation days. And my boyfriend can’t take as much time off as me, so he won’t be able to attend the wedding in Chicago if I tack on Ohio time. But these vacations need to be planned soon. Why’s it gotta be so complicated?!

Ugh. Best way to simplify is to do what you and your boyfriend will enjoy the most and forget the rest. There is nothing worse than losing precious vacation days to frustrating schemes that tie you in knots and Leave you frustrated and disappointed. You earned your holiday so enjoy it! ( Tell your mother to visit you, another time as it won’t work)

Ughb is right. I want to look forward to vacation, not dread it. Thank you for the good advice. I feel like a terrible person because I also don’t want to invite my mom here to visit. We get along so much better over the phone. We tend to pick at each other and each of us have such different personalities and we’re not good at bending to the other one. Sigh.

My suggestion for the second trip (based on too much experience of weird family dynamics) is to go to the wedding in Chicago but for a very short time (e.g. fly in on Friday, out on Sunday morning). That will give a very firm window on when you are in the midwest and there won’t be enough time for you to spend with your mom to make it worth 9 hours of her driving time.

And if you have to “create” one or two wedding events to fill your one full day, that’s OK. Bridal brunch? High tea for guests? Why not!

In Giglio di Firenze (La Via Del Profumo) from a decant, TK Foxbins!

It is a warm Iris. I’m not kidding. A sort of earthy (warmish earth?) iris with hints violet. To me, it is more wearable than AA’s Irisistible–but to my nose similar (although I don’t have the AA in front of me, so my memory may be wrong). After a while it morphs into a buttery, almost cocoa buttery scent (not coco butter, but cocoa butter) with iris.

This perfume feels very intellectual–like reading Ulysses. I get glimpses of beauty and humor–but it is a little over my head. I have that issue will real orris root. The Prada Infusions are easier for me–more like the Dubliners!

Happy Iris day! I have a beautiful iris in my garden that is endemic to NZ. It has lovely small white flowers dotted through firm spiky, tussock-like leaves in summer but now the leaves are a quite bright orange and the seeds are bright yellow balls, like holly in shape but a bit bigger. I don’t think it was used for scent but I will check. I am wearing Diptyque ylang ylang Mohell I am in a yellow , banana, mood while waiting for sunrise.

I have a number of samples of iris perfumes, but today I decided to try something from my Histoires de Parfums discovery set. I tried 1725, which I believe is “Casanova.” My nose was kind of dried out at the time, but I got a lavender and anise scent. Now that my sense of smell has hopefully improved for a bit, I’m still getting a lavender and anise fragrance, maybe a bit of incense and other spices. It doesn’t seem to have a lot of sillage a few hours after application. This is a good thing, since I’m on the same floor of the house as Mom is.

I may try something with an iris scent in the evening. It seems to me to be a good day to be designated “Iris Day.” The orris is blooming outside, along with a purple iris with pleasantly-scented flowers. It might be ‘Caprice,’ but I didn’t put a name tag by it.

Never did get around to dabbing on one of the iris samples…

I did get a box from Luckyscent with that bottle of Tokyo Spring Blossom and various samples in it. I deliberately asked for a sample of the same perfume I’d gotten a sample of last year — the CdG Lily, since I just rediscovered how much I liked it. And another of the samples was called something like “Above a Chocolate Shop.”

Also I got a little box from FragranceX from the same night of shopping. They had a number of bottles of Demeter colognes that were comparatively inexpensive. I told myself that I did not need four ounces of “vanilla cake batter” cologne or four ounces of various other yummy-sounding fragrances. I did end up getting an ounce of “chocolate chip cookie” cologne, along with minis of other inexpensive brands and a few samples.

I really shouldn’t do late night shopping, especially not when I’m apparently craving chocolate. I mean, it’s not like there’s any specific time when I wouldn’t necessarily be craving chocolate (lol), but I just need to stop with the late night shopping.

I’ve had a busy day of doctors and dentist appointments. Finnaly was able to get my son enrolled in a college class for his upcoming senior year. I am accidentally in Iris for Iris day in Bvlgari au the bleu. It’s such a calming perfume. I know that’s probably due to the lavender, and I’m just shocked at how good I think this is. Since lavender and I don’t usually get along.

I’m sampling TDC’s I Miss Violet. Oh, no, no, no, no. This smells like a wet diaper to me. I get powder, I get urine, and that functional perfume smell they put in diapers. I will have to scrub it off.

Well. I won’t be sampling any more of that! The only other scent that has elicited that type of reaction from me was Pharrell G.I.R.L..
I couldn’t get it off fast enough. I’ve put on some Bombay Bling to drown out any remnants of IMV.

Yesterday I noticed my irises blooming out in the front garden. They are so cute, only about a foot high, but I love them. They seem to always flower at the same time as my tulips and bleeding hearts every year; they like to show off all at once.
