Tuesday scent of the day 5/7

Posted by Robin on 7 May 2019 228 Comments

Tuesday! Birthdays today: Ishirō Honda, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Robert Browning. What fragrance are you wearing?

I was going to wear Heeley's Spirit of the Tiger, and I went and found this perfect tiger teapot to match and everything, but of course I cannot find my sample of Spirit of the Tiger. So no points for me today! I'm smelling fantastic anyway, in Blackbird Y06-S. Tea at the moment is Upton Organic English Breakfast.

Reminder: on 5/10, wear a fragrance by Heeley, Hiram Green, Histoires de Parfums or Honoré des Prés, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter H.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: The Tiger Who Came to Tea at The Savoy teapot ("The Savoy has teamed up with HarperCollins Children’s Books to commemorate the fifty-year anniversary of Judith Kerr’s treasured classic The Tiger Who Came to Tea through the launch of a unique children’s Afternoon Tea - The Tiger Who Came to Tea at The Savoy. You can now buy the bespoke chinaware, with illustrations from the book. Made by Heraldic Pottery." is £60 at The Savoy.

I’m wearing HdP again, this time 1740, which I’ve never worn. I like it.

I love that one and own a FB, which I may wear on Friday. Don’t like the name but love the juice. Very good patchouli-centric scent.

1740 is very nice! Like Calypso, I don’t care for the name at all. HdP used to have travel sizes of their scents available. Not sure if that is still the case.

I’m in Brin de Reglisse for the tiniest fraction of a point, because I finally got some samples of the earlier Hermessences I never managed to try. I can certainly see why this one is such a favorite – it’s addictive much like licorice itself! (and Robin, going back to read your reviews, I wonder if Brin de Reglisse has won out over Vetiver Tonka in the end? I feel like I see you mention it more often!).

My favorite Hermessence, probably because I love both lavender and licorice. You smell lovely!

Robin, I will give you points if you listen to “Eye of the Tiger”?
I’m so frustrated with my son’s “guidance” counselor right now, I could scream. I am trying to get him into a college course for his senior year, and we are not getting much guidance. It’s cold and windy and rainy, I’m wearing Ambre Nue. 4 sprays, but it feels faint on my skin. I like how it smells very much.

Sadly, I have heard that song recently because my son listens to it, and even to crappy covers of it, much to my EXTREME dismay. There are several other songs like that, that I did not even like the first time around, that he plays regularly.

Sorry for your frustrations lillyjo. Maybe call and ask him who you can speak to above him to make it happen. I recently had an insurance frustration and called my point person and simply said, “I’m not taking no for an answer, so who do I need to talk to, to make this happen.” Results!? Stay strong mom!
Also, thank you for the morning ear worm!?

I’m in Assam of India for teapot Tuesday. I’m trying to spend some time with my full bottles this month. I tend to get distracted by samples and decants. Tea is half caff coffee.
Sunday afternoon I got two emails from “PayPal” that were in French…I don’t speak French and I am in the US. I immediately forwarded them to spoof@paypal and tried to log into my account but was unable to. I kept getting a page, also in French, asking me for a verification code. Unfortunately I have it linked to my checking account and since it was Sunday I couldn’t call my bank to alert them….so, when I got up yesterday and logged into my bank, sure enough $1000 had been withdrawn. I called my bank and they will stop the transaction. I have to stop in today and fill out some paperwork. I hate this kind of stuff. The people that do this are really the scum of the earth, just one step above people that run financial scams on the elderly. I guess it’s a first world problem, but still….so frustrating.

      So sorry!

You might check with your bank — my bank lets you have as many accounts as you want for no extra charge, so I keep a bunch of them, including one that is just for paypal — that way there isn’t much at stake. I’d still have the same issue you do, but I never have to worry that my main account will get cleared out and things will start bouncing…

I have several Heeley samples, including Esprit du Tigre. And I am going to try as many as I can during the next three days. (Or at least two days. On Friday I’ll probably wear a Heeley scent I know.)

Today, however, I am in Histoires de Parfums Tubereuse 2 Virginale. I give up on it. It’s a nice scent, but it just disappears in half an hour. Don’t know if it’s just me or it has real longevity issues.

Okay– What perfume am I wearing (this is a super easy quiz for those of us of a certain age!)?

    Hint:

Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
    Jimmy quit, Jody got married
    I should’ve known we’d never get far

Oh, when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Yeah, I’d always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life

    Ain’t no use in complainin’
When you’ve got a job to do
Spent my evenings down at the drive-in
And that’s when I met you, yeah

    Standin’ on your mama’s porch
You told me that you’d wait forever
Oh, and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Does it have a really lovely woody drydown? The reason I ask is that I tried Archives 69 and You or Someone like You on skin in the store and neither was great initially. However, when I got home, one of them had morphed into something very nice and for the life of me I couldn’t remember which was which.

I’m having a totally bizarre week here. I have to take some serious cognitive tests next Monday that require practice. So if I’m not working I’m doing complex sums about percentages, staring at changing shapes, or pondering the truth about obscure scientific facts. It makes a change, but it feels kind of useless.
The tests are a required part of a long selection process for a job. I’m not living in this madhouse for no reason.

SOTD is HdP 1725 (Casanova) a lovely and gentle lavender amber with some anise in it.
I’m on my third pot to tea (testing makes thirsty!)

My folks are leaving tomorrow for California and I will be dog sitting. I am working 2nd shift at my job today and need to do some grocery shopping. For the past couple weeks, we have been cleaning out the fridge and freezer, eating as much as we can. So now, groceries are needed. Wearing Une Rose Vermeille today even though it will take at least 2 showers to get it off my skin. Looking forward to having the house to myself though.

Heeley Blanc Poudre today from a sample thrown in as an extra in a recent swap. I kinda love it! Reminded me a bit of my beloved Paul & Joe Blanc right when I sprayed it and them morphed more into a L’Heure Bleue smellalike. I wish Heeley sold their perfumes in bottles smaller than 100ml. I’m also realizing I’ve only smelled 5 of their perfumes, so I may add samples of those I’m interested in to orders when I can.

I’ve got Dilettante lined up for tomorrow since my coworker is taking a vacation day.

No points for me: I went with Lune Feline for a cold and rainy day. Spring where are you?

Would anyone who owns Guerlain’s Terracotta be up for a small (3 ml) decant swap? I don’t want to buy it blind and there is no easy way to test. I can offer in exchange a decant from my bottles of Lune Feline, Arbole Arbole, Istanbul by Gallivant, l’instant, tocade, or Kismet by Lubin. Write below if you are interested!

Yesterday was such a MONDAY that I couldn’t even glance at NST until 6pm, yikes! Today is going slightly better but still rather Monday’s-ugly-sister-ish.

SOTD is Dawn Spencer Hurwitz (partial credit?) Giverney in Bloom. I am pretending it is spring even though it feels more like winter here… chilly, gray, dreary, even a bit of drizzle.

I had a fun time visiting Arielle Shoshana last week. Didn’t get to meet Ari but I enjoyed chatting with Katri. Got to sniff all the mods for her new perfume… sniffin good! Looking forward to the final version. Glad to see that her kickstarter is fully funded!

Well, I can say from a medical perspective, lap belts are considerered restraints. There have been a number of deaths in all kinds of institutions and facilities in which the belted person attempted to get out of the w/c/bed/chair and strangled themselves, leading to huge lawsuits and settlements. Like any tool, used unwisely or without proper supervision, it can make for a very bad day…

Robin if you are on a banana kick ….I tested this banana scented face oil at Lush the other day and thought it was nice, not too sweet or vanillary. I would use it on my body, I think. I had bad memories of grinding my way through Browning’s My Last Duchess at school. Every poem we did seemed to selected and taught in such a way that ninety percent of the class lost the will to live. Dover Beach was another that still makes me shudder. I think things have improved now. The great Australian poet Les Murray died last week . He was a real character, the kind of person who could be both everyman and sage. Anyway, Layering Smoked Ambergris with Prairie Nymph…perfect autumn combo.

And it’s not the best banana out there either. My favourite banana fragrance is actually Felanilla. It’s an accent there and it works just brilliantly.
The opening of Banana (or whatever its name is) is really nice, but I did not enjoy the dry down as much.
Their Mont de Narcisse on the other hand is brilliant.

Corsica Furiosa for a summers day. Crazy that it’s in the mid 80’s here and predicted to be so over the next week. That means I will have to get housing for my work days because it’s soo hot to leave T-Rex in the van, which cuts into our Alaska budget. ?

I will say I’m enjoying CF immensely! It’s like an old friend I haven’t seen in years, yet we just fall back into the same easy friendship.

Researching medical coverage and found out that COBRAing my health insurance will be about $1000 smackers. I’m covered in Canada for urgent/emergent care, but it’s treated as out of network, so my costs will be exponentially higher. Maybe after I get mauled by a grizzly, I can hop in the van, drive over the border to Alaska, then activate my emergency satellite beacon?! ?

All money issues aside, I’m getting super excited. T-Rex and I spent the morning in the park, took a nice 3 mile bike ride, which is nothing for me, but a good dose of exercise for her, which she needs on my days off. Apparently, animal control is staking out the park and ticketing people with off lead dogs. Taking the van in tomorrow to have it looked at prior to launch time. Pretty sure I need new brakes, and I have planned for new AT tires as well. Hoping there’s nothing too costly that’s not covered by warranty. I may get a new heavy duty battery too…

My perfumes found a new home in a covered wooden box that fits the esthetic of the inside of the van, so I’m very happy about that.

Hoping things are going just as well for all NSTers today✌?

It’s for July and August. My contract here ends June 22, so I’ll be hitting the road soon after. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than no insurance. Weird things happen, especially to me. I woke one night at 2am with an almost complete retinal detachment in my right eye. Total cost of surgery, surgeon, and follow up was >$75,000!! Not complaining because I’m lucky to have functional vision (originally misdiagnosed and untreated for 3 days), and very Grateful, with capital “G”! But without insurance, I’d be destitute right now. ? I’ll cough up the grand and hope like H*** nothing crazy happens.

Rather than finding housing for T-Rex, maybe you can pass her off as a therapy dog at work? I bet she’d be very popular.

I know you’re excited for your Alaska adventure but it sounds a little menacing. Of course, I get excited when I spot bobcats in my back yard. They are so beautiful to look at.

Lucky you to spot bobcats in your backyard! Watch your pets and small children!

T-Rex has no control when it comes to people. This is why I take her everywhere I can in public places. I was at the bookstore last night, talking to a nice lady in cafe section, and T-Rex would NOT hold a down stay! She simply has to get in the middle of any interaction and completely take it over. Not all people like dogs (shocking!), and some are very afraid of dogs, so I *try* to let the person do the approaching if they are interested in petting her. But she can’t seem to control herself. I wish I had thought to take video of it, because she stayed down, but proceeded to crawl under the table, around the bags, and under the chair to get to the person I was talking to. It was kind of hilarious! Met a teenager at the park today who had some level of autism I’m betting, based on the way he interacted with me. But T-Rex won him over in about a New York minute. Next thing you know, he’s down on his knees, she’s rolled over on her back to give him better belly access, and I may as well have been invisible! Lol. He was very hesitant of her (and me for that matter) at first, but he warmed up to her quick. Eventually to me as well, once we started talking about mountain biking and drone flying?

I don’t see Alaska as menacing at all, but I tend to live by being prepared for worst case scenario. I think I have just taken my *on the job* attitude and gradually applied it to my life over time. The best way to handle a code situation it to do whatever you can to prevent it. I like being proactive rather than reactive. ?

Goutal Bois d’Hadrien. The opening is bright citrus, the woods are quite nice but this goes to skin scent quite quickly – and I have it in EDP. Just 30ml though so at least I didn’t make a huge commitment to it.

Jasmin Perle du Thé for me today. A very pleasant scent, if I do say.

Enjoyed Avengers and didn’t need to even go to the bathroom during. Made it through just fine. Just made a point of ignoring my soda until about 45 minutes were left….

Off to my knitting group in a little while. Two men’s hats plus a scarf/hat combo for a woman. I’m behind in the hats for men, so it’s my focus the next few weeks.

Knitting! Judging by my track record with cross-stitching which is much easier than knitting, I have not attempted knitting. Both my sisters knit. One of them made a scarf with an opening ~ 3 inches from the bottom of one end to loop the other end through once the scarf is around the neck. We all wanted one and by luck, I got a blue green combo which I posted on IG on Feb 24.

I decided to follow the link for Ishiro Honda, and was rather pleased to see that he had directed some of the old classic Godzilla movies. Those used to scare the living daylights out of me as a kid, but now I find them great entertainment to unwind with.

More blue skies here today! I will do my best to try and send this lovely weather on to folks who are stuck under the grey, cold and wet. ☔

SOTD = Silences EdP. from the sample stash. This sample has been enjoyed very much, and is getting low. Thanks again to the NSTer who sent me this beauty!

Believe it or not, I did not know about Ultraman until a couple of years ago. There is a new anime based on the original live action series airing in Japan that looks really amazing. I had to Google Jonny Socko… never even heard about that one!

I was also a Janie-come-lately to the Speed Racer anime.

Crazy day again so I’m unwinding with a couple sprays of Lush Big. Just what I need tonight; a no-brainer.

This is like their Big Shampoo if you are familiar with it; kind of a bwf. It looks like I got this in 2012 when they had their Forum specials around Halloween; I don’t think Lush does those anymore.

Scent this evening: twins with madtowngirl in Assam of India.

Mine was a good day — I saw a presentation about bird watching at lunch time. It was more aimed at beginners, but the presenter’s Power Point slides worked, and he had some lovely pictures of the birds he was talking about. I could identify a number of the common birds of the area that he showed, except for those that bird watchers refer to as “little brown jobs” and and the warblers. I’m sure I’ve *heard* warblers now and then, but I haven’t seen them. I recognized the more colorful of the birds that come in winter to eat birdseed and suet . :)

Before and after that, I did errands and shopping, so it was a productive day, too.

SotD = Assam of India + a light dusting of Oud al Sahraa

My quest for scent simplicity continues with AofI on Tea for Tuesday. The little bit of Oud is nice, i like it better mixed than straight up. ;)

Hope everyone had a fantabulous day full of fragrant fun. My day was nutso, but hey, it’s over.
