Blackbird Y06-S ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 29 November 2017 17 Comments

Blackbird Y06-S brand image

In the future there will be no bananas...This is not a novelty scent...This is not a gourmand perfume. So says Seattle-based Blackbird of its latest fragrance launch, Y06-S.

The moment I read Y06-S's list of ingredients (banana, "electronics," agarwood, jasmine and milk) my intuition pointed to instant "I will like this" and I was right. Y06-S is one of my favorite perfumes of the year and will be a part of my Summer 2018 perfume rotation.

Y06-S starts off with a strong and steady banana note: a "young" banana scent with a hint of greenness (my favored state for bananas; once a banana has a brown freckle, I shun it). As the banana hums, a beautiful indolic (skanky) jasmine note chimes in. Jasmine-lovers who grow a variety of jasmines will already know that "banana" is a facet of the jasmine scent profile.

Blackbird Y06-S

Next up Y06-S presents a great "coconut milk" note, creamy but neither too sweet nor too foody. And the "electronics"? As the teensy bit of agarwood warms up, I detect a comfy smell that reminds me of over-heated metal appliances, but without going into full-scale nutso territory. Y06-S ends with sweet jasmine mixing with a hint of banana.

Y06-S could be worn — of course! — by men or women though it probably skews a bit feminine due to the floral dry-down. The perfume lasts all day on me and has close-to-the-body sillage. If you love jasmine and white florals, do give it a try.

Y06-S Eau de Parfum is available in 15 ml ($58) or 30 ml ($88). Check out Blackbird's website for a list of retailers in your area; you may also order directly from Blackbird.

J, ha! I think Blackbird used that very phrase when their black Friday sale / promotion of Y06-S was about to end.

It sounds right up my alley! Ordering a sample right away. The 30ml bottle is the perfect size. I feel I will end up with one!

Kevin, I like to think of you doing a serious art museum talk smelling of underripe bananas and hot electronics. ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????

I’m not sure whether I would enjoy wearing this, but I’m very curious to try it.

So, what do you think the name is about? It sort of sounds like Wild Success… but that is a stretch!

OF…I don’t know! I should have asked Blackbird. But I can definitely see “success” (six-S)

I’m so happy to read a good review of this! I haven’t tried it on skin, but I did get the chance to spray it on paper and was charmed… but not confident it would be well-liked. This makes me even more excited to give it a thorough test!

Looks like Amaranthine freed itself from the unbecoming constriction of Penhaligon’s to find a new life under a more appropriate flag!
Raw banana, skanky jasmine and milk were all there (but without the coconut and electronics!). I wonder how different this new fragrance is from the discontinued beauty… I would be glad to know it was reincarnated, because buying sadly packaged British brands with a fake bucolic aesthetic has never suited my morale!

Zazie…interesting…I don’t think I ever tried Amaranthine; wish you could do a comparison for us.

The older I get and the more perfume I accumulate the rarer it is to smell a scent I’ve never smelled before. It’s always fun when that rare new scent does comes along. You had me at banana & electronics with this one. I know I’ve never smelled that.

If by chance it does retrace some of the steps of Amaranthine that would be ok, too. Amaranthine was such an odd beauty. I’d be very happy to encounter something similar again.

So glad you reviewed this one. Sounds weird, and I like that.

I love a particular variety of pink jasmine flower. It has a sweetness that leans banana-y. I’ve never found anything like it in perfume. Y06-S is going on my list of jasmine perfumes to sample. I may never find my great white whale of a jasmine perfume, but searching is great fun.

Tiffanie…wearing jasmines…and growing them…is lots of fun. I also have a jasmine with a hit of banana in the aroma
