It's Friday, and our community project for today is edition 4 of the picture challenge, part 1. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Georgia O'Keeffe's My Shanty, from 1922. You can read more about the painting here and here. There is a short bit on her time at Lake George here.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in the indubitably beautiful but very not-me Chanel No. 19, from a vintage decant that has perhaps seen better days, especially in the top notes. Wearing 19 always feels like wearing someone else's clothes, so I've added a dab of Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue to soften the angles a bit.
Reminder: on 5/3, wear lily of the valley for May Day (which is really on Wednesday).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Good morning…..TGIFriYAY!!!!!!!!
I gotta say…..I am not a gal that always “gets” art. I always appreciate it, and some art resonates with me more than others, but this style and/or meaning of art kinda flies over my head, if I’m perfectly honest! 🙂 There’s always something new to learn, methinks….
So anyhooooooooo……still going with the art theme and wearing a sample of Comme des Garcons Andy Warhol You’re In. I never really understood Warhol art either! LOL
I love art and art museums but honestly don’t know that I always “get” it either lol.
I’m right there with you JadainGA; I’m neither sophisticated nor knowledgeable about art ~ but I do know what I enjoy, and that counts for something!
I doubt I know anything more than anyone else…what I know about that picture, I read in those links 🙂
I am wearing Aqua Universalis, don’t know if it fits the picture.
Your layering sounds great Robin, should try one day.
I am happy it is Friday, had difficulty getting back to work after 10 days in beautiful Italy.
Welcome home! Glad to hear you had a good trip. Did you buy any perfume? 🙂
Thank you, I bought Gallivant Istanbul
Nice! What are your impressions of that one so far? Glad you had a good trip 🙂
Loved it a lot, it reminds me of the spice Markets of Istanbul without being tooo spicy, it has a fresh aspect to it, tried it at a little perfume store in Ravenna and it was love at first sniff, I had to buy it.
10 days in Italy seems like heaven!
Lucky you to have 10 days! Hope they were fabulous.
I’m wearing Iris Silver Mist, it’s a grey skies, contemplative perfume for me. Perfect for the painting and weather we’re having today.
That’s a great choice!
Love your choice!
Fantastic choice!
You smell wonderful! This year I’ve found myself craving Iris Silver Mist though for years its appeal eluded me. I’m glad I kept on trying. It’s so deeply satisfying.
The clean lines and especially that grey roof made me think of the gloriously austere SL Santal Blanc, which is like an invisible sandalwood sculpture. I don’t wear it nearly enough, but I’ve already put it on twice today (just to smell the opening notes again) and I’ll probably reapply after I shower.
I see it’s been rebottled in that showoffy Politesse Collection bottle, which I’m sure means it’s been reformulated, too. I hate to think what they might have done to it. But it used to be so, so beautiful.
This sounds lovely. I really have no need to hunt down or try out new fragrances right now…but that description sounds really intriguing!
From what I’ve read (and would assume, given what’s happened to sandalwood in general) it had already been redone, right? But could be that it’s been redone again.
Carnal Flower Frederic Malle
Hi ?! Smellin’ good❣️
✋??
I love that one but it evokes the contrary to the painting to me! You smell great.
?
I adore that one, it reminds me of a dear friend. You smell lovely Bear!
??
A sample of CF came with my beauty bag. I’m excited to try it!
??
Big White Flowers for the win!
??
Gris Clair, based on the gray sky and overall melancholy feeling I get from the painting. And it’s gray and chilly here which makes GC a good fit.
Day off today, I have missed checking in with NST in the morning. Enjoy the day, everyone 🙂
Excellent choice, I may have to consider being your twin!
Ah, nice pick.
SOTD = Puredistance White
1/2 spritz! I match the white frame of the barn window and because Petunia wore it the other day!
In other news…The Sephora Spring Event started today with 20% off for VIB Rouge. In the past, I would take my time and build my cart but invariably, something will go out of stock. My plan this time was to have my cart ready and submit the order at 12:01 AM. Curses! The code did not work and I did not feel like talking to anyone. This morning, I was able to submit it.
Lillyjo asked if I was getting any perfumed goodies. Is the Pope Catholic? (jk, you know I ❤️ you). I was originally going to get the 9mL travel spray of Atelier Cologne Pacific Lime but saw this Deluxe Sampler with 9 minis (including a 4mL travel spray of Pacific Lime) and a certificate for a full size version (30 mL for Atelier Cologne) for the exact price of a 30mL bottle of Pacific Lime. It was not a difficult decision to make and most of the perfumes in the deluxe box will likely end up becoming freebies!
https://www.sephora.com/product/deluxe-perfume-sampler-P443741
Looking forward to reading what others came up with!
See, this is why I like the painting CPs so much – you learn so much by hearing what other people see. I had not noticed the bright white of that window frame!
Now that you both mention it, the bright white window frame is all I can see!
LOL. I just found the picture to be kind of dark and depressing and that white window popped visually.
I’m trying my best to avoid reporting anything to Donatella – as a result, I’m more focused on skin care.
I’m interested in the Drunk Elelphant Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer and the Brightening C/Glycolic 20% serum by Tatcha. I may get a Fresh Sugar lip tint in Spice and I need to replace my Laura Mercier Illuminating Moisturizer with sunscreen and Caviar Stick in Peacock. But I fear the Peacock may have been discontinued and it happens to be one of my favorite of her Caviar Stick colors.
I’m always tempted by the Fresh Sugar lip tints, but haven’t actually sprung for one. I wonder how they wear.
My favorite lip tints are by Face Stockholm – Cranberry Veil is gorgeous, can be built up or one layer will be a perfect ‘my lips but better’ tint that leaves a discreet lip stain behind.
The other is by Laura Mercier, Stick Gloss in Pomegranate (of course, discontinued)…
I have tried the tinted Lip Balms from Fresh, and they are rather moisturizing. Good for 3 seasons of the year for me. Winter usually requires a heavy, heavy duty lip covering.
I totally agree. La Natura makes a shea butter lip balm that’s vanilla-scented. My lips love that stuff in the winter time!
Caviar Stick in Peacock was still available on nordstromrack.com last time I looked (few days ago).
FearsMice ~ THANKS!
Enabler points awarded!
FearsMice, I purchased two caviar sticks in Peacock! Thanks for the heads up! 🙂 xoxo
I haven’t reported since I’m too lazy to do it!
Brilliant choice–and good use of shopping savvy to achieve max results!!
Thanks. I try to be efficient ?
I thought for sure you’d be in No. 19 today. ?
I don’t view No.19 as “I am woman, hear me roar” which was my assessment of O’Keeffe’s position in painting this (interpretation based on Cliff’s Notes from Regina).
Ha! I was planning the same shopping strategy except with Orange Sanguine. I think it comes with a mens sampler box.
Oh gosh Indid not eve look at the men’s set!
I was about to be super tempted by the sampler (gift certificate for a 30mL bottle PLUS a bunch of cute minis?!?!), but luckily the Pacific Lime is the only one I really want. A travel spray of that one is on my list–such a great summer scent!!
If great summer scent means you will be using a lot of it:
$28 for 10mL
vs
$75 for 30mL
vs
$75 for 30mL + 4mL + 8 other perfumes which can be used for swap currency, if you are so inclined.
Heh, but most of us have several lifetime Les worth of perfumes already and maybe your way is the way to go! ???
Hahaha! I love your cold-headed analysis of prices 🙂 🙂 I really love those 4- and 10-mL Atelier Cologne sprays, actually. I got one of those gift boxes of eight 4-mL sprays last year and I am loving the heck out of it. So mostly I’m hoping to buy or swap for a small travel spray, even though you very accurately point out that the 30mL + a bunch of other super cute, swappable or freebieable minis would be the better deal 🙂
Were you able to get everything on your “Sephora raid” list?
One item was not available. I will get my package on Monday!
I chose Feu Secret for the project. The building in the painting looks like people might burn incense in there while rustling dry paper and assembling their paint palette, and FS evokes that kind of scene fairly well.
Nice!
I like your imagery. I’d rather be someplace burning incense and rustling paper…
Plus, you smell great SheriG.
Not doing the CP, but continuing on with exploring my least used L’Artisan scents. Today’s fragrance is Dzing!, which I’ve never really understood. I have it, the way I have Bvlgari Black, because it is a modern classic. It is definitely not my favorite.
Dzing is one of my ‘new’ favourites, I think u smell wonderful of course, my husband however, wrinkles his nose when I wear it!
I gave away my Bulgari Black, which I bought for exactly that reason – modern classic. At some point, I needed to admit that I just didn’t like wearing it.
I haven’t smelled Dzing in ages – I might see if I can find it in my sample drawer. I seem to remember it smelling like cardboard?
A bit of a stretch for the CP, wearing SSS Equestrian. (Barn? Hay?) Anyway, I love this in spring. It’s rainy and a little gloomy here, this perfume brightens the day.
I think Equestrian is a great fit for this cp. I gave away my travel spray but it immediately came to mind.
I am thinking along your lines….horse, barn, hay, tobacco, etc.
Wearing Lonesome Rider, because it was the first thing that popped in my head when I saw the painting.
Oh, nice!
Excellent choice!
You smell freaking good!
Love it, you smell great.
TGIF! Hooray! Happy Friyay everyone. MY SOTD is Chanel No. 19 extrait. It’s so old it’s dark & syrupy, sooo yummy. 🙂
You smell fabulous!
Thanks! 🙂
And my office coworkers are very happy about the Hazelnut chocolate (Gluten-free) cookies I brought in this morning. Recipe is below. 🙂
Preheat oven to 350
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups of Nutella
2 large eggs (room temperature)
1/2 cup of GF flour mix (for non-celiac patients, use regular all-purpose flour)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped, toasted hazelnuts
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon espresso powder
2 tablespoons of dark dutch cocoa
Mix ingredients well and spoon by the rounded teaspoonful onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Dough will have a glossy almost oily appearance, that is OK.
Bake 7-9 minutes, let cool on the pan and remove.
Store in refrigerator for up to four days.
Oh, yum! Sounds pretty easy, too. Thanks for posting your recipe! I still make those flourless peanut butter cookies- I think you gave me that recipe.
You’re welcome! And I forgot all about the PB cookie recipe. Glad you enjoy it!
And don’t forget the coffee… 😉
Oh goodness those sound amazing!
Store up to four days? I don’t understand…
LOL!!
Neither do I. You’re in good company! 😀
Lol, seriously!
Double yummy–and thanks for the recipe. Looks easy enough for even me to accomplish.
They were so easy! Got the seal of approval from the coworkers.
But now I’ve had three cups of espresso and four cookies and
I’m going through the five stages of grief… 😯
LOL!!
??
Many thanks for the recipe!
🙂 Happy to share!
As I said earlier this week, I LOVE the story behind this painting (and love your interpretation of it, Robin!).
For me, it made me think of perfume bros I have encountered in certain internet places (not here!!), who are very masculine-essentialist and describe fragrance like they might describe a car engine (“great performance;” “beast”) and protest too much along the lines of “I don’t know anything about women’s perfumes” or “I could never wear that, it’s too feminine.” In their honor I am wearing vintage Bel Ami, described by no fewer than 5 Basenotes reviewers as a “powerhouse.” (One guy remarked that it will “attract the right kind of ladies to your money.”)
For me it was love at first sniff. It’s one of those that I love so much I can’t imagine anyone not feeling the same way; my mind knows they exist but my heart won’t believe it.
?
Lol, have fun chasing off the ladies from your money today ?
Ha! Love this. “Beast mode frag”.
Hee hee hee!
So many things wrong with this, but so funny! ““attract the right kind of ladies to your money. . .”
LOL. The best interpretation!
Beast mode is the subject of many YouTube videos. That, and the compliment factor. It’s both hilarious and annoying. Great interpretation!
Ha, I think you beat me at this game! Excellent. The right kind of ladies for your money reminds me right away of Lyle Lovett singing M-O-N-E-Y.
At the top of my list of annoying fragrance terms: “beast mode” and “performance”. Not even going to type the other one which is just plain offensive. So. Very. “Bro”.
Yes!!! I went to an exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art awhile ago that had some paintings by Arthur Dove, one of those “dismal-colored” Steiglitz bros O”Keefe was challenging Dove was very good but IMO not as good as his wife Helen Torr. There were some O’Keefe paintings in the exhibit, too. They made you forget everything else.
I just realized I hadn’t seen your pick for this CP, so I had to hunt for it specifically. And I don’t regret it! 🙂 Hope you enjoy attracting those ladies.
“It’s one of those that I love so much I can’t imagine anyone not feeling the same way; my mind knows they exist but my heart won’t believe it.” <–I totally know what you mean! But the last time I smelled Bel Ami (admittedly several years ago, in my baby perfumista days), I didn't much care for it. Your comment makes me think I should sniff it again!
I picked Iris Rebelle. Like the painting, it’s cool, vegetal, and earthy but also friendly and a little sweet. I don’t find that painting to be brooding or melancholy at all; to me it seems withdrawn, yes, but in the manner of a meditation retreat. Tranquil and introspective.
I love that one but it’s gone within 2 hours on my skin.
Love your description of the painting.
Aroma M Geisha Blanche. Doesn’t really go with the cp at all, but I’m enjoying reading everyone’s picks. Today I’m in the perfume oil. I added a few drops to my lotion this morning.
This is my weekend to work but I don’t mind because we are in line to get 3-5 inches of “heavy” snow tomorrow. No, I’m not kidding.? This morning I passed a skateboarder wearing just a helmet and shorts on my way to work. No shirt, no shoes…it was 45 degrees.
You smell good! And ugh to the snow. I have a friend in his fifties who wears shorts in the winter (I think his cutoff is like 40 degrees). No shorts or shoes is just crazy, though!
Thanks!
I knew a guy like that in college, wore Hawaiian shorts almost year round. 40 may be shorts weather for some people, but that’s down parka weather for me! I’m always freezing!
Knowing you’re still getting snow makes me vow to no longer complain about anything below 60 degrees….
Ha! Glad I could help!?
Our weather can be really fickle this time of the year, two days ago it was 70 and sunny. Mother Nature just likes to remind us who’s boss.
Weekend snow twins!
I wondered if you were going to get it too! Ridiculous, isn’t it?!
I’d rather be perfume twins!?
And heavy snow no less, as if ANY snow wasn’t enough of an insult!!
Exactly!
Skateboarding without shoes?!?!? That would be a terrible case of road rash if anything went wrong!
That’s the same thing I thought!
No SOTD quite yet, but I’m thinking something by Germaine Cellier to match the woman-in-a-man’s-world story behind the painting. Vintage Jolie Madame, perhaps, which matches the color scheme more than Fracas.
Also: I thunked an actual bottle yesterday!!! Ok, it was only 15 ml and it wasn’t full when I got it, but still. I also already had a backup, via the last swap. Sensuous Nude. The first time I tried it, I thought it smelled like pure Coppertone. Really grew on me after a friend gave me her bottle.
Nice choice! I will imagine that Cellier and O’Keeffe are meeting over lunch, empathizing briefly about the man’s world they must live in, but then moving on to the much more important work of talking about their art.
Yes!
I like Sensuous nude, I wear it on summer evenings at home, very cosy, I find.
Yes, cozy and a little sexy.
Yes, definitely!
Any bottle THUNK is a good thing!
ELDO Attaquer le Soleil Marquis de Sade
1. To me, smells like the painting: herbaceous and cool.
2. Both were inspired by jerks.
3. Painter challenged herself to paint in a style she did not like; perfumer was challenged to focus on a note he did not like.
4. I don’t know why it’s named Attaquer le Soleil, but if I lived in that painting I’d sure be hoping for an attack OF the sun.
This is great! ?
I had a manufacturer’s sample of that that I dropped and it shattered. There’s some potent woody amber in that one. I could smell it for days even after wiping it up!
I absolutely love your interpretation! I didn’t know that story about the creation of Attaquer le Soleil. There’s a similar story about Slumberhouse Sadanne (Josh Lobb challenging himself to use florals) and it’s one of my very favorites, I wish I had thought to wear it today.
Yes! Learned that from the review on Colognoisseur. Very interesting read. I’m no expert on de Sade, but this scent doesn’t smell like what I’d think a stereotyped interpretation would (Dungeon? Sweat on leather paddle?); instead it was inspired by facing experiences you don’t like.
Not a challenge for me though. Discovered from this one that I love labdanum! If anyone has good cistus-forward recommendations, do shout please!
*applause*
I very much enjoyed item #2 on your list!
The sky in the painting is dark and moody, and the sky here is dark and moody, so I wore one of my favorite dark-and-moodies: Tauer Les Annees 25. Iris, ginger, and Tauerade.
Oh, and I meant to add that I registered for a 5K! It’s a trail run at the beginning of June. The course looks fairly challenging (stairs, hills, etc.), so I’ll likely walk most of it. Hoping for nice weather that day!
Good for you!
2nd that! Go holyneroli.
Awesome news about your upcoming 5K!
Joining the No. 19 train, thanks to a new decant from KellyC! Any excuse is a good one, imo.
Virtual high-five!!!
Sweet!
No excuse needed for No. 19 in my book! Just because works for me.
Gris Clair because it goes with the cool, grey, drizzly weather today. I suppose the mood of the perfume matches the mood of the painting…
I’m hoping to leave work early today- going to a belated Seder tonight. We’re making ground lamb with green lentils with a yogurt sauce. Not very traditional but it’s so delicious!
Oh goodness that sounds delicious!
It really is! I love lamb in general.
Second comment on Gris Clair–excellent choice.
Thank you! I really just wanted to wear it today.
That sounds fantastic. If you have an easy recipe I would love to see it!
It’s from a book called Dinners Illustrated: 175 meals ready in 1 hour or less.
I don’t see this particular one available online.
There seem to be variations from other sources online (spicy lamb with green lentils and yogurt).
And by “we’re making”, I mean my husband ? I clean up after him.
Ooh, I would love that recipe! ?
See above comment!
Thanks, Elisa!
Definitely Googling spicy lamb with lentils and yogurt. It sounds drool-worthy!
Bois des Iles Edp. I’m sure it matches the painting with the natural tones of the sandalwood (grasping for straws here).
I’m hoping to look up all the London suggestions this weekend!
Question: How long have you ever waited for a package before giving up all hope? I already filed a lost mail request, tracking has not updated since April 11 and that update was “arriving late”, without a location. So bummed!
I don’t have a timeframe per se but found out that the postmaster can actually see more tracking rows than what shows up on the usps tracking tool. I had an Etsy package from South Africa that was “lost” and the postmaster was able to see the package being held up in customs, then it went to California and then a “damaged” sticker was placed on it and it circled back to SA. The box showed zero signs of damage (i received a picture of it from the postmaster). I eventually got the item but the whole saga took almost 3 months!
thanks for the update! Did you actually go to the Post Office or call them? I only did the submit a request online route so far…it’s funnily enough, a scent you mentioned today – Pacific Lime!
What a coincidence about Pacific Lime!
I happened to already be in the post office to pick up a package (a book for my mom mailed by someone from the next town over and no more than 10 miles away and 3 weeks after it was mailed, we got a postcard stating it had to be picked up). It was while there that I thought to ask about the package from South Africa. Besides the first face to face, I had 2 phone calls and 2 email exchanges. It was worth it to get it resolved.
The longest I have had to wait is a month and a half. I had won an auction of vintage Mitsouko and waited over a month for the post office in Florida to ship it to my house. It was so aggravating to wait that long.
Yes, I keep rushing to the mailbox (it gets very hot once it gets warm) to check and starting to think I should just try to let it go instead of fuming over it.
Why would you let it go? You should get what you paid for!
I just got a tracking update!
Whoo hoo for the tracking update! Good news, I hope?
Eesh, the package hasn’t gotten to you yet? I think the postal worker did some kind of first class/no fly arrangement of the postage to help with the costs. But it may have ended up going at “ground” speed. I’ll look at the post office receipt again. The items were well taped and wrapped in lots of bubble wrap. Hopefully when they get to you they’ll be in decent shape. Hopefully the package will get to you soon!
As usual, I completely forgot about the theme. I always quickly spritz on perfume right before I dash out to go to work. This morning I grabbed the first bottle I saw which was Meo Fuscuimi’s Odor 93, which has nothing to do with the painting but smells great.
Which is good enough!
Tried Demeter Lily of the Valley last night, but by the time I sprayed it, my nose was too dried out and I couldn’t smell it. When Mom and I are done our shopping trip, I’ll put on some cheerful perfume that reminds me of a sunny day, to combat the feeling of the gray skies of the past couple of days here in southeastern Pennsylvania. If I were playing along to find a scent to go with the picture, it would probably be some sort of incense, something more somber.
I went on a Demeter sample binge the other day… it hasn’t yet arrived. I am already regretting my impulse!
Yep, Demeters can do that to you — reasonably priced but by the time you’re done, you’ve ordered 5x what you originally went in to order. Happy to say I walked away because I was overwhelmed with the choices!
Will you retry the Demeter?
Oh, yes. I’ll retry at a time that my sense of smell is better. 🙂 I’ve got to give the samples some chance. 🙂
Ended up trying SL Un Bois Vanille, which I like. It strikes me as a comforting kind of fragrance.
Surrender to Chance had a long, long list of Demeter samples. Sometime when they have a line sale on Demeter, I’ll work through and figure out what scents I’d like to try. I’m already sure I don’t want to smell “Dirt” or “Mildew,” though!
My grandparents had a big barn like that the whole time I was growing up. I loved exploring in there and the way it smelled. Anywhoo, next to the barn they had two huge fig trees. We would pick the figs and my Granny would make fig preserves or we’d have figs and honey.
I’m in Philosykos today for my G&G’s fig trees and barn.
What a lovely memory, and u smell wonderful too!
TWO fig trees? I’m not a fan of fig notes in perfume, but the actual fruit makes me swoon with pleasure.
Yes! They had so many figs that people from church and neighbors etc would come get them also!
Love the story behind your SOTD choice! ?
I’m still wearing my decant of Ann Gerard Perle de Mousse. It’s a warm green fragrance for me and I think it works for how the painting makes me feel.
Perfect then!
I am taking a paid day off today and enjoying every freaking minute of it. I don’t have to be anywhere and my cellphone bill has been paid, so now I don’t really need to do a thing. I have spent the morning in vintage L’heure Bleue. Now that I am about to get into the shower, I am thinking of going with Les Annees 25. Andy Tauer has minis listed on his website of Les Annees 25. So it’s either raid Sephora or the visit to the Tauer website. Choices over something small can be hard. I can’t wait for my package from Ulta to arrive at my house.
I loooove Les Annees 25, so I would put in my recommendation for that! Although I also impulse-ordered an unnecessary hair product from Sephora yesterday (actually really excited about it!), so I can totally understand the fun of a Sephora raid too 🙂
Golly, I read every entry this AM hoping for CP inspiration. Y’all just did not inspire me. SO I went with Bracken, but now it is giving me a little headache. Late yesterday I turned in my rough draft of a big terrifying project, so I don’t know why I am feeling so contrarian this AM. Grumble, grumble, grumble.
Hope you’re day is getting better oakland!
Oh behalf of everyone, I apologize for not being inspirational this AM. 😉
Well. That is mighty civil of you. I GUESS I forgive you. I guess… (said in sullen teen voice)
Good you got the draft in! I hope your day gets back to normal soon. I hate the almost aimless feel after a big work project,
I like Bracken, even if i don’t like berry notes in perfumes. You smell good
Hope tomorrow is better Oakland!
I’m wearing Wild Hunt by Christopher Brosius. It smells like a day when it might rain, earthy, vegetal and smelling of old wood. Despite all its dark tones it manages not to feel muddy, perhaps because it has a kind of clarity of purpose that O’Keefe’s paintings have. The name resonates for me, too. I think O’Keefe was on a wild hunt throughout her life to reach the essence of things.
Nice. It sounds perfect.
Thanks.! I do love this perfume. Sometimes I wear it in the dead of winter when everything is dry and colorless just to remember what the green world smells like.
Vert d’Encens for the green trees that brighten up an overcast day, both here in the Boston area and in the painting
Overcast here too, good for you for finding the bright side.
Ash, good one!
Stupid typo.
I am wearing 402 and 501 from Bon Parfumeur from a Fire Cube sampler set I have been testing…no affiliation to brand or beautyhabit but link is below. These are my favorites of the 4. Very nicely done to my nose.
Notes for 402 are Vanilla, Caramel, Sandalwood
Notes for 501 are Praline, Liquorice, Patchouli
Also I just ordered the big discovery sampler set from the brand’s website last night which is 18 two ml samples for $45 and free shipping/no tax to US. The discovery set is $60 and sold out on beautyhabit. 😉
https://www.beautyhabit.com/collections/bon-parfumeur-paris/products/bon-parfumeur-paris-cube-fire-f-sampler
https://www.bonparfumeur.com/en/produit/discovery-kit/
Nice deal!
I find the colours in that painting restful and an invitation to think. So I chose one of my more meditative scents. Bois d’Encens by Armani Privé. It somehow also fits the colour.
I used to think I liked Chanel no. 19, but I’ve come to realise that most Chanels and me do not really get on. It’s undoubtedly beautiful, but so not me, so I understand your extra dab of Infusion Absolue.
I’m the opposite- I used to think that Chanels did NOT suit me, but more and more these days I think they do.
I am the same re. Chanel perfumes. In fact it is almost how I feel about Chanel shops. I like to go in and have a good rum age about and try everything out and enjoy the whole experience but at the same time they feel so constrained that I am glad I can escape that world after an hour.
They make me feel like I ought to do something about my (very unruly) hair. And lose some weight. Neither association is very pleasant.
I do adore Cuir de Russie though, it’s got more curves than most Chanels.
Oh, good choice.
I have my Bois des Iles, which for Chanel is probably an afterthought, and my Cristalle, but by and large I am not a Chanel person either.
I almost chose Chanel Sycamore for its earthy vetiver and peppery edge. but decided against it, too. Somehow it was just too buttoned-up and polished.
I chose Chergui for the CP:The colour and the sandalwood for the wood cabin, I imagine a little old man living there, smoking a pipe, (tobacco), the incense, because it’s a meditative painting, and the little old man is contemplating upon his life, with his old dog beside him (musk) Outside he smells hay, and sees the iris and sweet roses, and a bee or two bumbling between the flowers, which reminds him, he will go and collect some honey from his hives to have on his porridge for supper.
Good choice! You smell great.
Thanks!
Chergui is such a great match.
Yes, like the painting, the darkness is lifted and lightened by the hay and flowers, making it comforting rather than brooding.
Mmm, Chergui is perfection on the right day. Well played!
Chergui is a perfect match.
I let my imagination run wild about the painting. I’ve been reading a lot about WWII lately–Transcription, Lilac Girls, A Woman of No Importance–and so I thought the structure looked like somewhere in Europe where spies might meet. I’m wearing DSH Mata Hari. Wrong war, but oh well. I’m hoping it calms down a bit, despite only two tiny dabs the projection is impressive, and I’m going to the movies in an hour.
I wore 1876 earlier this week and think it’s a good fit for this cp.
How was Transcription? I have that on hold and still have a long wait.
Really good. I read a lot, and some things leave my mind as soon as I close the cover. Transcription has stuck with me.
In Guerlain Jicky extrait because it’s not overtly feminine and I think GO’K might have chosen it and because lavender which might be growing somewhere not far in the painting.
What a beautiful choice. Such a wonderful perfume
Thank you Kanuka, I did love wearing it.
Oh interesting, Jicky is exactly what she should have worn.
So glad you agree Robin!
I had several ideas for this cp but went with DeProfundis because I think it matches the overall tone of the painting. My Shanty reminds me somewhat of Warren Kimbal’s folk art paintings.
I haven’t been able to try Deprofundis, but it sounds like a great choice.
DeProfundis is an excellent match for today’s CP!
I rumbled through a lot of choices for this CP, but finally landed on Reverie au Jardin, a discontinued and less loved Tauer. It has a deep, cool, under-growth scent. Lavender, herbs, etc….as only Andy can put it together. Seems perfect with this cool, rainy day.
SOTD is Annick Goutal Encens Flamboyant. Why did this picture make me think of EF? I feel that the colors of the scent are the same – grey, blue and green – and it also has something bright ad light, like that white window on the picture.
I am curious about how you select art for the picture project, Robin. Are all the pictures your personal favorites? Or do you come across a picture and think “This one would be nice for the picture challenge”? Or do other people suggest images to you? Sorry if it was asked before.
So far have not done a personal favorite (and haven’t even liked all of the ones we’ve done) but eventually I probably will. Someone did say (sorry can’t remember who) that we should do GOK, so had spent some time looking through images and back stories, and even though this painting is not all that representative of her work I just though it was a) beautiful and b) interesting story and c) something people could maybe work with in all sorts of different ways, which is more fun?
But also, some images of art works are hard to use because of copyright restrictions, so that has talked me out of a few I would otherwise have used.
Thank you for answering. A very thoughtful approach.
I’d have liked to wear Fille En Aiguilles for that picture but I don’t have any, so I wore my rainy day scent Arpege instead as it looks a bit gloomy there.
Majorly gloomy here too, Desirae!
Sotd is Aura. I didn’t mind a perfume match for the picture but I did match it to a song!
https://youtu.be/vH5qJNl8qDM
Happy FriYay!
Oh nice, I did not know that song!
I suspect it’s not the same shanty, but maybe I have all sorts of wrong ideas about GOK 😉
My local classic rock station has been playing this every friday at 5 o’clock for decades. It’s been renamed The Friday song.
I feel there is so ething very assertive about this painting in the way the shed dominates the entire scene, all but blocking the strip of lake, crowding out the trees (willow?) and even the hill. I like the contrast between the block-like structure of the building and the sensual, languid cloud that drapes across the sky. Problem is I am just back from Christchurch, it is 6 am and my mother is in my room ( where the wild perfumes are) and I am on the couch…and, horror, I smell of yesterday’s test of JPG Cabaret which comes in a red sparkly bustier bottle and smells like orange blossom musk and is kind of blousey…but with a ginger tint. Later I will spray Willow and Amber . I wish I could live in a shed by a lake. On my drive I pased a barn with a white window frame just like that one but it was beside a huge mimosa tree.
Wow, Lovely image- bet that would have made a great painting
Agree! Look at this more cheerful “shanty”, in the exact same (Lake George) location:

I love the colors. It’s hard to believe it’s by the same painter.
I did a double take when I saw the artist information for that second painting.
Funny, eh? Good picture.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing!
I’ve spent a fair amount of time in a tumble-down old wooden building by a lake and wouldn’t romanticize it too much. I think your description of your present circumstances sounds rather delightful, though I’m speaking as a mom of a certain age preparing to go visit her son. I imagine he will be a bit uncomfortable, too, but we will still have some fun.
What I like most about this painting is the barely open door. O’Keefe kept on painting doors, over and over. As she grew older and older the door grew more open and more mysterious. They give me hope.
I went with Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau today. Off project, but for some reason when I saw the bottle it seemed like the right choice. When I bought it a few years back, it was a total bargain basement buy; I think I paid all of twelve dollars for a 50 ml bottle at an online discounter. It’s a spicy leather concoction by Christine Nagel, and it is surprisingly good.
I’m sure we’ve done a “Cheap Thrills” CP, but I’d love to see this come around again.
We have, but noted and added to list!
I enjoyed today’s cp, especially its back story, so thank you very much for posting those links, Robin. But I’m going with the visuals rather than the back story with my SOTD, Jacobo Silences. Everything about this fragrance – its greenness, yet earthy, moody, melancholy earthiness, even its very name! – immediately suggested itself when I studied the painting, so I went with it.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead! It’s a beautiful, breezy, sunny warm day here in the Chicago area with much in bloom. But, like madtowngirl, we are expecting somewhere between 1-1/2 to 5 inches of snow tomorrow night! Perhaps this painting is a harbinger of what’s on its way . . .
Oh, so many good picks today and Silences is another!
Enjoy your last bits of spring weather, and hope it will be back to melt that snow pronto.
HYLNDS Foxglove. It’s all iris on me today, but it doesn’t feel especially moody or atmospheric…
What kind of iris? I’ve noticed that note can be quite the shapeshifter.
I keep wanting to sniff all those Hylnds again. I remember wanting them to come closer to their evocative marketing descriptions, but think they were still all quite good.
Miss Dior Original after a workout and a quick shower. When I saw this painting, the brown earthiness jumped out at me. I have three fragrances that automatically make mind think “brown”, and one of them is Miss Dior Original.
What are the other 2 scents? Inquiring minds would like to know. ?
In my mind I think of Chanel Coco as a lovely brown blanket. The other “brown” from my perfumes is Hove Diverti. When I am wearing this one, I think of a very warm wood cloud, and I start to think brown.
A friend kindly gave the the rest of her bottle of Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, which means I can now spray with abandon. I could say its austerity reflects the picture, but today was an iris day and that’s that.
That was super kind of your friend!
Wore a small spray of Chypre Mousse today, because the picture looks like the cabin is in a humid, green forest. With this powerful scent a small spray lasts all day and more. Last time i sprayed too much and was really overwhelmed by the scent. I like it a lot more with the appropriate dosage.
Chypre Mousse is definitely a BIG scent.
Enjoying my day off work in PG Cuir d’Iris. Oily leather and dark iris, it totally feels in line with the painting. Had a delicious cheesy grits, poached eggs and cauliflower bowl for lunch and am now eating some ice cream outside. Might take a quick jaunt to the nearby beach but not stay too long yup avoid rush hour traffic. Got a little later start than planned, as is my usual MO.
Ooooh, your lunch sounds like it was delicious! ?
It was delicious!
Sometimes the art/picture CP’s are easy for me, and sometimes I need to ponder a bit. This one was easy… I looked at the picture, and the name of a perfume popped into my head without any hesitation.
SOTD = Estee Lauder Azuree EdP, in the old style bottle. Smelling it these days, it could easily go back and forth between the “men’s” and “women’s” sides of the perfumed aisle.
I never smelled Azuree but it sounds nice!
If I were to come up with a single word to describe Azuree, it would be assertive. Dry, herbal, almost medicinal slowly changing over to something leathery and possibly earthy. The opening blast of Azuree is something to behold!
Your making me want to go to the EL counter for a sniff!
I’ve smelled it once a few years ago but can’t remember the opening.
I’m not sure what the current version of Azuree is like. My bottle is from 2012, according to the batch code on the bottom.
Yum! I love Azuree.
It is cold and grey here again; stepping back from spring to almost-spring.
I wanted a vetiver for today, and found a sample on top of the pile: Hans Hendley’s Untitled. It’s a very contemplative, dry vetiver with musk and sandalwood. I love it, as I’ve loved another of his (Jade), but every single one I’ve tried has gone *poof* after 15 minutes. 🙁
Boo for perfumes that vanish into the mists. ?
Hello all, today I’m participating in the CP by wearing Amouage Opus VIII. It seemed apt because it has white florals (like the bright whiteness of the window frame) but is overall soft (like the textures of green leaves and clouds) and soft with a greyish tonality (benzoin + Incense + wood). It’s a hot day of late spring here, so the picture doesn’t quite fit with our current weather. To be honest I don’t consider O’Keeffe a very good painter. I dislike the flatness of her canvases (as with the gray of the barn here). The best things here are the gauzy greens of the tree and shrub leaves. Once I was at a conference in Santa Fe and a number of us went to the O’Keeffe museum and one man commented, “The problem with O’Keeffe is that her works look better as posters.” At that time the museum was fairly new and there was a lot of O’Keeffe worship around, including in our group (an aesthetics group) so I was shocked, but I’ve come to believe he was right. But of course, we wouldn’t like a perfume that was “flat” or could be best rendered in a reproductive medium, so I chose one that seems to me quite multidimensional and complex. I’m sorry if I sound snobby here, but I could say equally snarky things about a lot of male artists’s works too! Just because someone has become famous and much-studied and written about doesn’t mean you have to fall down and worship at their feet. So there’s my $.02 worth for the day.
My Mother and I made a special trip to Washington D.C. to see the exhibition of her work organized a year after her death, 1987, at the National Gallery. While I would not characterize my respect and admiration for her work as worship, I came away from that show with a whole new appreciation of her paintings. The surfaces are flat, but I think the lack of traditional perspective makes the images totemic and powerful. Many of her paintings are quite small and very intimate. There is something of the eternal and powerful feminine contained in her work that I find difficult to articulate but that I entirely enjoy. I guess we can agree to disagree. As with perfume, art and the enjoyment of it is an entirely subjective matter.
Had to go sign for our Cdn taxes after work so I sprayed on some L’Atessa for good karma; i put my decant in my purse specifically for that! I’m getting a nice refund so it seemed to work. Still waiting for the US portion to be done.
Got home and had a celebration drink and sprayed on some Demeter Thunderstorm. The 2 frags combined seemed like a good match to the CP, at least to my brain this morning at 5 am.
Happy Friday everyone!
The painting is soothing and the green and brown earth tones are beautiful. It made me think of Chanel’s Sycamore, which is my scent tonight. I loved reading about everyone’s choices!
Good Morning All, I have been distracted w/ some personal issues of late…nice to jump back down the rabbit hole and immerse myself in this olfactory paradise!
Picture=SOTD= Sl De Profundis.
‘Nuff said’.
Now I’ll go back and read all the comments.
Very late comment to this party but I wore EA green tea camellia for the rich greens and the smell of foliage that are radiating from the painting.
I got three Arden fragrances very cheap on eBay – green tea camellia and cherry blossom and sunflowers bloom. They don’t have much silage but they are so refreshing and I’m actually impressed by their lasting power on me.
It’s lovely to read everyone’s choices. There’s lots of lovely green scents I’m not familiar with and it’s a great time of the year for something green and fresh.
