Tuesday scent of the day 4/16

Posted by Robin on 16 April 2019 168 Comments

Tuesday, Charlie Chaplin's birthday, Emancipation Day in DC, and the ever popular Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day. Taxes are but a distant memory, and Notre Dame still stands. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm quite happy to be wearing Kenzo Air (copying Coumarin from yesterday). Tea at the moment is the last of my Wu Yi Golden Monkey from Upton. I will be reordering shortly.

Reminder: 4/19 will be Twice as Nice Friday...wear a fragrance that you've purchased more than once (a scent that you used up and bought again, or a scent for which you've already got a backup bottle). If you don't have such a fragrance, wear the scent you'd be most likely to rebuy. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Paris tea towels by Coucke are $12.95 each at French Connections.

I’m so glad that Notre Dame de Paris is still standing.

Wearing L’Eau d’Hiver. I don’t think I’ll need a back-up bottle of this, but it is a gorgeous fragrance. Still in the grip of a nasty cold which doesn’t seem to be improving yet. On the plus side I can still smell really well, so that is good. And thanks for all the well wishes yesterday.

I think I have tried a similar tea, it was just called Golden Monkey, or Golden Monkey King. It was very nice! I’ve finished my morning DF Earl Grey Green and am now going to brew a pot of Jardin Andalou by Palais des Thés.

I’m also glad that Notre Dame is still standing.

I hope that your cold begins to break up soon. It does seem to be lingering.

L’eau d’Hiver reminds me of Apres l’Ondee. You smell lovely.

Maybe the first to comment, a rare occurrence. I’m in Gris Clair, a perfume I have a back up bottle of. I dipped into my BUB to decant at the swap meet, but it’s such a strong perfume that I still have plenty. Thinking of buying a back up of Fleurs de Ctronnier too since I only have 10ml left. I can’t imagine the old bottles will stick around forever…

Hope it’s a good Tuesday for everyone!

Yes, as I was typing, I thought surely someone will beat me because I’m taking so long. It’s still nice to have the second post. Yesterday I posted so late that very few probably read it.

Arabian Nights by Jacques Bogart. I’ve been seeing it in TK Maxx for the past 3 or 4 years and my curiosity grew and grew. I caved in the second quarter last year when a couple of bottles turned up yet again. Turns out it has one of the most gloriously post-coital-pre-shower filthy openings I have ever smelled – cumin/cardamomphobes might want to steer clear. I love it and went back for the other bottle as a back up the next day.

Ha, I will not be buying! Love cardamom, the more the better, but cumin that approaches filthy levels is more than my current level of tolerance allows.

What a fabulous description! Like Robin, I love cardamom, but a thing I do not wish to smell like is post-coital-pre-shower filth. But what a great way to describe a scent!

I’m wearing TDC Sel de Vetiver. This is from a sample, but I got a 10ml decant at the last splitmeet because I liked it so well. I am finding that vetivers are what I’m drawn to this spring. I will have to see if I can find some Kenzo Air.

Finished my sample of Poivre Samarcande this morning. Enjoyed it thoroughly but won’t need any more. So relieved that Notre Dame is still standing. I visited in 2012. Went through my pictures last night, before knowing the outcome. It was the first thing I checked this morning.

I was in Paris around the same time and remember being bowled over by Notre Dame’s sheer presence – it was my first (and only) time abroad and there’s certainly nothing even remotely like it in the US! I didn’t go inside, but took lots of pictures too. The images from yesterday’s fire were beyond surreal.

It was my first trip abroad, too. I didn’t have much time in Paris, had to be choosy about where I went, but made sure to see Notre Dame. Like you said, it just had such presence.

Good morning everyone! Great choice Robin. I brought my bottle along with me and enjoyed Air all day.

I’m in Givenchy Insensé today. I know there is always debate with Turin’s 5-star masterpieces but Insensé is a revelation. Lightly floral with jasmine and a tiny LOTV, plus some nice herbal bitterness and a nutty woody base. Perfectly judged and a true joy to wear. I have two bottles, in keeping with the week’s poll. ;)

Wearing Slumberhouse Brosse… I like it quite a bit but not enough, I think, to resist getting some of my money back by selling it.

I’m thinking of ordering a few CB I Hate Perfume samples because I NEED to smell Here Piggy in my quest to smell all truffle scents. They are pricey so I have to be choosy. What are the must-sniffs? Black March, still?

I love my teensy sample of Black March because it smells just like dirt that’s wet with snow melt and that’s a smell I enjoy but I wouldn’t wear it. Memories of Kindness is the only other one I recall trying and it’s straight up tomato leaves, Demeter Tomato smells the same to me. So I have no suggestions! But I look forward to seeing your thoughts about Here, Piggy.

I agree with those 2, although I do like Memory of Kindness better than the Demeter version…not sure SO much better as to justify the difference in price, maybe.

Also, if you love the smell of coppertone, At The Beach.

    SotD = Assam of India

Going against the grain a bit as it’s cloudy and cool today and AofI is so delicious in the heat. Today I get more woody notes. Very nice. :D

A vivid memory of Notre Dame involves a donkey tied to a tree in the square while the police questioned a rather wildly dressed woman who was crying over a man who had just jumped into the Seine. He was pulled out quite quickly but it was so cold that day I was so worried for him. Such an oddly exquisite thing to think of the human history centered in that place.

Good afternoon everyone! My drama continues. There was an accidental conflict of appointments for tomorrow. I have been trying to reach one person to reschedule an appointment but they are in a training session until 4. So it’s a bunch of anxiety due to trying to get this done before work. I hate being on the phone all morning trying to work other things out as well. Wearing Dioressence today hoping I can get through the day.

Due to circumstances when someone very close to me really effed up at work, I spent some time trolling the web for stories about how people survived really big mistakes at work. My favorite story was a woman who had somehow booked an overseas trip for her boss a week before the actual scheduled meeting. She didn’t realize her mistake until he was checked into his hotel and reviewing his meeting plan with her. She managed to get the folks he was to meet with on the phone and patch together something with them. Her boss never really found out the scope of her mistake–was just vaguely aware that there had been some last minute changes.

My worst mistake was having the hotel reservation for my boss accidentally cancelled by the travel agency, I didn’t notice, and he showed up in India at 3am with no hotel room. He was mad as a snake and I laid in bed and cried for two days, I was so ashamed and mortified.

Wearing Orange Sanguine today. I first got a small sample in a Birchbox back in like 2009 or something. Finished it, but hadn’t planned to repurchase. Then I got the Atelier Cologne 7.5mL sampler which contained OS. Finished it again, still with no plans to repurchase. Was given another AC 7.5mL sampler pack last year, and it contained OS again! I have unintentionally re-received this scent more than any other. :)

I was surprised to find I have fewer backup bottles than I thought, though I have multiple backups of a few scents–BdI, L’HB, Panthere de Cartier. I have backups of 11 scents in total, out of a collection of about 150. Most of what I bought backups for are discontinued, limited edition, or I’m afraid what future reformulation might do to them. The only scent I have bought repeatedly as I used it up is L’Heure Bleue since I’ve been wearing it forty years. Today I’m wearing Mistral Patchouli, and I bought a backup when I heard it had been discontinued. Still have about 5ml in my original bottle, though.
I’m so happy Notre Dame still stands, I was afraid the walls would collapse. Big cleanup and restoration job!

Finally stepping away from all things Number 5 – at least for (part of) today and am in Ostara that I received from a lovely NST swapper a few swaps back in a decant. What a beautiful spring fragrance! After being reminded this morning of its discontinuation on another post, I just ordered the large bottle online. This should last me until doomsday (I hope!) as I tend to get through even a small bottle of fragrance very slowly, and this will probably stay mainly in the spring line up.

    Hello All!

    1) It’s my B day today! *blows noisemaker* and i am in Frsh Cream Soft Suede, since it was a bit chilly this A.M.

    2) I did my taxes, filed….and got an email saying that the IRS rejected my taxes! Most likely a stupid error like putting in the wrong PIN or something in the software. Sigh.
    3) BUT! The amounts were…comme ci comme ca. For all of my scatterbrain tendencies I am pretty good at figuring out financial stuff, so I did not owe and will receive very little back (mostly from the State of Oregon) However, I can see how if you were a parent or lived in certain states the new tax laws would not be in your favor.
    4) And long after I have returned to dust, and the idea of scarcity and taxes are laughable, Notre Dame will STILL be here.

I went with HdP 1876 today. A friend introduced me to it recently and it’s really growing on me. It’s a perfect scent for cool spring weather. It somehow reminds me of Mitsouko but it isn’t classified as a chypre. It has a similar but much lighter base and is a little musty and fruity, but not peach. I bought the travel size but I think that I need a FB.
I’m also so relieved that they managed to save Notre Dame Cathedral. It’s a treasure and I’d hate for the world to lose it.

Is that the Mata Hari rose one? It was nice but I got a hefty dose of cumin or caraway in that one. Is it not prominent on you?

It is Mata Hari. I know what you mean and I was leery, hence the travel spray. I smelled it wafting off my friend’s scarf and it was gorgeous on her. My skin usually amps cumin but not with 1876. Anyway, the opening is musty/mossy like Mitsouko but much more sheer with a slight fruity hint. The dry down is spicy, powdery, woody and green. It smells awesome today as the weather is cool and breezy. I can send you a little decant if you want to try it again? I think it’s one of those perfumes that smells better on clothes or from a distance. It’s a great scarf scent.

So relieved to hear this morning the pipe organ and rosetta windows at Notre Dame were saved and the building is still standing. My husband and I sat in the pews on our first day in Paris and fell asleep jet-lagged listening to the organist practise. A lovely memory. Bravo to the wealthy individuals and corporations who have already pledged millions to the restoration.

In honour of Notre Dame I am wearing Apoteker Tepe Holy Mountain.

I had already planned on wearing La Liturgie des Heures today, but it seems particularly fitting in light of damage to that world treasure, Notre Dame. I had that on my list of things to visit the next time I travel to Europe. So sad, the devastation of so much history. But by all accounts, there is already funding and the spirit to start rebuilding as soon as possible, so I guess I will visit a work in progress in a couple years….

The Sainte Chapelle on the same island is less impressively large (of course) but otherwise a far more magical and less visited mediaeval church. So even if the cathedral is still closed for visits, you can get the spirit of long ago.

Sainte Chapelle is stunning. It was terribly crowded when I visited there as well. Would not have wanted to have missed it though, those windows are stunning.
La Basilique Saint-Denis on the other hand is a lot quieter.

You know, I think Sainte-Chapelle gets more crowded with each passing year. It was a much emptier, more pleasant visit the first few times I went, probably back in 2008-2010, than it was when I went more recently in 2018. (Still worth it.) I guess as more and more people around the world start having more disposable income and more access to travel, they all want to see the glory of Sainte-Chapelle :)

Late start today (again!), but I had a good omen (if you believe in those things) today. When I stepped out to take the doggo potty, I saw a fluffy seal cavorting around in the water right in front of us. He was not impressed with anything he saw and moved on, but it was a nice start to the day.

SOTD is a bit of Indochine from an almost gone bottle- maybe about 7-10ml left..! I may buy another bottle because I have really enjoyed this one. I will admit, this is the bottle that the most swaps have come out of, so there’s that.

In other NPN, my ankle is seemingly completely normal now! So weird, but I’m so grateful because now I can take the doggo on extended walks again. We did over 7 miles yesterday, not counting the little 3 mile bike along the waterfront (T-Rex continues to give me disgruntled side-eyes looks when we bike). We’re off to go take a closer look at the sculpture gardens and check out Myrtle Edwards Park over in the “real” Seattle.

The biggest decision I have to make today is “Coffee now?” or “Coffee after the water taxi ride?”

I really like simple days! ✌?

So relieved to see that the Notre Dame fire caused less damage than expected <3 It would have been heartbreaking to lose it. I'm 0 % religious, but that place fills you with something. I've probably spent more time in Notre Dame than I have in any other house of worship.

I am adulting so hard this morning! I got an eye doctor's appointment, checked my HSA and bank accounts, contacted my wrist doctor, and plan to do several other things I've been putting off for weeks having to do with stocks and money. Stayed up very late last night working, so I feel like I'm entitled to spend a significant portion of my morning doing things that I keep putting off under the framework of "but I have so much work to do! I couldn't possibly think about money issues when there are semiconductors to be etched!"

Helping me in my adulting journey is Dame Dark Horse. I've purchased or have been given and gone through so many travel sprays of this that I'm not sure why I didn't just buy a 100 mL bottle of it. Maybe because the 5-mL travel sprays are so convenient, and going through 20 mL is still very, very far from needing a 100 mL bottle. Anyway, this is a deeply satisfying wood pudding vanilla gourmand, and more or less fits the CP.

FBAR is Foreign Bank Account Report, you have to file it every year with the Treasury dept. if you have $10k or more per year at any point in a foreign bank account. And I’m sorry to say Canadian taxes are much worse than US, both in amount and paperwork complexity, mostly because we claim a foreign tax credit which means we get audited every year.

Fragonard Lavande for me today just because I wasn’t craving much this morning and it was still pretty chilly out. This one is warm, a little sweet and iris-y, and fairly easy (except for a weird chewy, rubbery smell I get when I first spray it).

Also relieved to hear that ND is mostly intact and no one was hurt. I watched a video of people walking through the streets singing that was quite beautiful.
Last Friday night I was startled by loud, mournful singing outside and went out to watch a seemingly endless procession of Polish people singing as they marched down the street in the rain, holding candles. It was very eery but rather beautiful. Still trying to find out exactly what it was, but it was something religious related to Holy Week.

I was driving around the harbour yesterday when I spotted a couple of godwits, a smallish wading bird. At some point this week (probably) they will lift off from the estuary and start flying all the way to Alaska. They return here in October and their non-stop ( 12000km) flight from Alaska to NZ takes about ten days and is the longest recorded migration for a non-sea bird. I was once talking to an environmentalist I had only just met at a book event and the topic of godwits came up and we both ended up with tears in our eyes as we imagined that exact moment when the birds leave the ground and just keep flying. At least when they fly north they stop to feed in China/Siberia so they are healthy enough to breed. Talk about a vol de nuit. I can hardly watch animal documentaries these days without crying… Too many sad whales or starving polar bears. JM jasmine marigold.

I was on the train platform waiting for my train. A pack of kids and who knows who else decided to hang out in front of me. One of them kept moving back and swinging her long hair. Before I go hit with the hair, I just said “excuse me, please watch your hair”. Anyway, they thought it was funny and kept trying to provoke me. Just to protect myself, I took a picture of them (only got one of them). One said look she took out picture, if anyone over 30 thinks she can outsmart me with technology she can think again, etc etc. Anyway, unfortunately, they got on the same train and got off at the same stop. I made sure that I was not vulnerable to be pushed because these kids were up to no good. Once we were downstairs, one of them took out her cell phone and as she started to take a picture of me, I gave her my biggest smile which was so unexpected it shut them all up. Bottom line with the pack — as a pack, they feel invincible and would bully…I bet that alone, each one is a coward. It’s a shame.

Thank you. You can’t show any fear at all because it’s what feeds them.

Oy. I avoid the teen packs on trains. Mostly because they’re super loud and obnoxious, but I’ve seen them roughhousing near the edge of platforms. You’re right about the invincibility thing.

I would too had I arrived after them but as it was, I was boxed in (against the station wall) and only came out and stood behind a layer of people when my train pulled into the station for boarding.

I’m very glad you kept control of the situation and that it didn’t escalate into something much worse.

You are exactly correct about the pack mentality; it’s a sad commentary on many levels.

There’s no reasoning with this type of group and remaining calm was the only solution.

Late today. Sotd is AP Maitress. Watery, soapy violet. Very pretty but no match for the cold wind.

Sounds pretty although I haven’t smelled Maitress. I hope you have better weather tomorrow.
