Friday scent of the day 4/12

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2019 278 Comments

It's Platonic Ideal Friday! Our community project for today: wear your platonic ideal of X (and X can be anything: yourself, a note, a fragrance family, a style or characteristic — be as creative as you like). (You can find an easy definition of platonic ideal here.) Thank you to Jalapeno and Koyel for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in L'Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons, my pick for the Platonic Ideal of a spring floral. (Now, if only it was the Platonic Ideal of spring weather.)

Reminder: 4/19 will be Twice as Nice Friday...wear a fragrance that you've purchased more than once (a scent that you used up and bought again, or a scent for which you've already got a backup bottle). If you don't have such a fragrance, wear the scent you'd be most likely to rebuy. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s cold today, so I am wearing my Platonic ideal of a holiday at the seaside – Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Mirto di Panarea.

Weather in the style of La Chasse aux Papillons would be nice.

Yes it would! It was actually sunny and warm here mid morning after a rather cold start, but has already started to grey up.

I would join you at the seaside if I could!

Robin, we had exactly the same though! Love this theme and knew I wanted to wear La Chasse as soon as I saw it – I have often thought about this perfume, “it’s not super interesting, but it really is the quintessence of pretty spring floral.”

You summed it up beautifully, when I think “spring scents” I think of La Chasse. You smell so pretty.

I was flummoxed by this project until I saw that Arielle Shoshana had been renamed to “Saturday”. It smells like Saturday feels to me, so I chose it. I also joined her kickstarter – can’t wait for my new travel spray, but I guess I’ll have to!

I hope everyone is well or on the road to getting there – stay warm and safe.

I’m in Bvlgari au Thé Bleu, my Platonic ideal of a purple fragrance. If the color purple had a smell, this would be it – lavender, iris, and violet.

Most of my coworkers are out at a conference today, so I brought my atomizer to reapply with abandon (thanks ElleBe!)

I wore vintage Parfum d’Hermes extrait for the same reason: it seems to me the apex of what a perfume can be — complex, gorgeously constructed, made with obviously high-end ingredients, and evocative in a way most other perfumes can only dream of. It’s my Platonic ideal of commercial perfumery.

FriYAY! FriYAY! FriYAY! (I’m sayin’ it 3 times today, because 2 of my kids are out of town at a retreat, so I might even get a date night this weekend without much trouble!) 🙂

Even though my nose is still malfunctioning (pollen count 2017; sneeze count 2018), I’m wearing a generous spray of my platonic ideal of an office scent: Prada Infusion d’Iris. It’s office-perfect because it’s close to the skin, clean and fresh, very unlikely to offend, and smells professional and elegant. So far it’s my most worn scent of the year, per my SOTD record on Basenotes.net…. 🙂

    Have a great weekend Y’all!

I’m in California Reverie which I got in the swap meet. I wasn’t quite convinced on my first wearing and found it very fleeting and so soft I could barely smell it. In subsequent wearings, though, I was getting soft wafts of jasmine and orange blossom around me like the gauziest veil, and it did very closely capture that ethereal scent of those flowers in the air on a warm evening in LA. And I never quite knew where the source of the smell was. It was like a phantom aroma and I always loved it. So this is my PI of California memories (and I may have bought a FB for a good price on Ebay ?).

Oh, nice! Good to get those old Serge bottles while they’re still available. The way I see it, if they d/c it and it becomes HTF, at least it’ll increase in value. Not sure if they kept that one in the new 100ml bottles…

I got completely knocked off my violet kick this AM because a box of decants sent me down the rabbit hole. Thanks to an extremely generous swap, I am in Or du Serail this AM, and smell amazing, in my not at all humble opinion.

Was out late last night at my book club–women I have know for 18 years! Our kids were in the same kindergarten class, and now those same kids are heading off to college next year. So the group is really more of a wine drinking and yammering club–although we do have some energetic discussions about books. The gathering put me in a very good mood! I’m off to the hospital with my youngest this morning for a routine endocrine check in–hope I don’t kill anyone with my perfume!

Carnal Flower which, I think, qualifies as a sort of Platonic ideal of tuberose-ness. In fact, it feels so idealized in its realism — hyper-realistic, I mean — that it no longer quite feels realistic (to me). Something like a photo that’s been over-saturated and over-sharpened.

Although Fendi is my all-time favorite, my platonic ideal and SOTD is Antonia’s Flowers Tiempe Passate.
It’s so dreamy, to me it smells of warm skin, fresh with the dried scent of sea salt. I think I love it so because it reminds me of my childhood summers spent on the East End of Long Island.

I’m feeling a bit melancholy today.
I had a hard time with the project, but chose Coco edp for my platonic ideal of perfume. I never tire of it, and it makes me feel beautiful, fancy, and pulled together. I think I will be using my ulta points on the edt soon. I almost went with 22 but, although it’s stunning, I’m not as comfortable in it as Coco. Speaking of 22, hoping Hannahmom is doing ok after her winter fall.

((lillyjo)), I’m sorry you’ve got the blues. I hope things get better.

Coco is a magnificent choice! I adore it, like Fendi, it’s rich and spicy with a great resinous undertone, although I think it’s a tad more animalic than Fendi (to my nose).
      Happy Friday! 🙂

Thanks Smokey Toes, it’s just one of those blah days, and I’m looking at a long night at work.
        Interesting about Coco vs Fendi.

    FRIDAY!

    1) SOTD: In Molinard’s Jasmin, a wonderful Platonic ideal of a jasmine scent. It’s clean and fresh and dries down into a warm rosy/jasmine on the skin, but it has a lovely sillage. Perfect.

    2) I came in a little late to work because the morning light looked so beautiful streaming into my house that I decided to enjoy my morning coffee at home instead of rushing out the door. May I tell you that I am so glad I made the paint choices I did: the light streams into the home and my pink/gold washed walls come ALIVE. The Magnolia in the neighbor’s yard is now in full bloom and to see that in cool spring sunshine was a wonderful beginning to the morning.

        Hey there!

        1) Base color: Pink Ground by Farrow & Ball- but you can dupe this color.

        2) Gold tinted glaze added to Pink Ground, no more than 10%, for the second coat.

The effect is a subtle seashel/opall effect on the walls. It’s very not an HGTV approved effect!

Hello friends, happy Platonic Ideal Friday! I am of course in Tam Dao from a previous swapmeet, and my skin smells like the Platonic ideal of itself. A good candidate for retroactive placement in Twice as Nice Friday next week, as I plan to get a bit more of this scent in the future, once my no-buy has been lifted (for those of you following along, I have made pretty good progress on that front! I’m about 70 % of the way there 🙂 ).

Stayed up working until midnight, so I got a sluggish start this morning. I also hope to go home early this afternoon. I’m too old to work that hard! What am I, a grad student?! (much love to those NSTers who are still in grad school)

Excellent choice. I revisited Tam Dao EDP recently and was reminded of how quietly gorgeous it is.

Big shoutout to grad students from me too! My mom is currently working on a Master’s degree while in her mid-50s and she’s my hero for going back to school at a time in her life that some folks would consider “too late”.

Also, I’m going to a (belated Imbolc) equinox celebration tomorrow and we’re honoring the Germanic goddess Ostara! Didn’t know anything about her except a perfume bears her name and I thought the pagan lore was interesting:

“Ostara takes its name after the Germanic goddess, Eostre/Ostara, who was traditionally honoured in the month of April with festivals to celebrate fertility, renewal and re-birth. It was from Eostre that the Christian celebration of Easter evolved, and indeed the naming of the hormone Eostrogen, essential to women’s fertility. The Goddess Ostara has the shoulders and head of a hare.”
    – from “The Goddess and the Greenman”

I’m in Profumum Roma Acqua Viva, the PI of lemon scents. Tart, with a tiny edge of bitterness, this is the finest of lemons. Nothing else comes close.
This morning excitement arrived with breakfast. I had frozen some smoothie ingredients so that I could dump them in the blender and make something quickly. This morning the blender seemed to be working a little harder than usual. I turned it off, and as I poured the smoothie, electrical-smelling flames erupted through the button openings. Yikes! I quickly unplugged it and now I need a new blender. I must admit mine was so old I don’t remember when I got it, so a couple of decades at least. Any recommendations? I don’t use it enough to justify a Vitamix or any of that sort.

I randomly chose Rose de Siwa for the earlier part of this day. I have one of those sample bottles and I really ought to decant some into a sprayer. It’s a gorgeous rose for when you are in the mood for something delicate.
After a very long and tiresome day at work I’ve since switched to By Kilian’s Water Calligraphy, a rather random buy this summer but it seems to hit the spot very often; my bottle is noticeably emptier than a few months ago. It’s pretty and undemanding and on some days that is just all I want.
    Have a great weekend everyone!

Water Calligraphy is one of those lucky buys. I saw a bottle at a deep discount and just went for it. Rose de Siwa is very pink indeed, but pale and delicate pink! YSL Paris is very pink as well, but that one isn’t delicate at all!

Invasion Barbare, La Promesse de l”Aube and L’Enlèvement au Sérail are stunning. The last one is discontinued. I’m also very fond of Rose, Vêpres Siciliennes, Le Rivage des Syrtes Un Cœur en Mai and Chypre Palatin. I haven’t tried all of the more recent ones, but am kind of dithering about ordering another sample set. It’s a great deal and I just really love the line.

I went with Sa Majeste la Rose, a soft bed of dewy rose petals, and with the exception of Douce Amere, is the only Lutens that has a chance of being considered a “platonic” anything.

Hey, off topic, but does anybody here use NIOD Neck Elasticity Catalyst?

I’m in the platonic ideal of….a bat cave? Seriously, I’m in Bat and cannot believe how realistically it smells of wet dirt and caves. It’s difficult at first spray- I like it but not sure others would- but it dries so wonderfully on skin! It’s a total win for me today, though. I’m enjoying it so much!

I think that’s one of the things I like most about Bat – the difficult-transitioning-into-wearable. I like the difficulty for a while but don’t want to fight with my perfume all day; still I’m glad it has such strong and challenging character for the first hour or so. (I would say it has that in common with Rhinoceros and T Rex.)

My platonic ideal of a perfume is that it always smells good on me, in all weather types (since I live in New England and get them all), for all occasions and is affordable. Therefore, I’m in my most frequently worn scent of Milk of Flowers

I read Neil Chapman’s Perfume yesterday ( I was surprised to find a copy here to tell the truth). His writing is both careful and thoughtful, one of my favourite entries is near the start of the book where he writes about a childhood memory of going on a scout camp and finding solice in a fern den in the woods…hus description is poignant but beautifully described in terms of the scent ( the perfume was a Penhaligon’s fern). If there was an orchestra of perfume writers I think Chapman is the obie or cello player to Turin’s trumpet and triangle. The book is arranged by notes which I really like ( rather than groups). Interestingly there is no entry for frankincense in the index but it is there , under Incense perfumes. I think it probably deserves its own entry. Most of the note sections contain a contestual paragrapgh followed by a few pages of perfumes ( few of them are the brands I would ever find in a shop but that wasn’t a problem). I thought one chapter ( containing a group of mimosa and other notes) was a little sparse compared to the other entries….it was more of a summary than an exploration. Really nicely done. I found a typo ( an Edith Wharton character’s name). Anyway, really nice and nice production . Boucheron again. I have noticed how well it blooms during nightly menopausal night sweats…a platonic ideal of growing old gracefully.

I chose the platonic ideal of a honey perfume, which for me is DSH Lush Honey. I don’t think she’s had it in her site for a long time, but I have a 10ml roll-on of the oil that still has at least 9.5ml. So it will probably last me the rest of my life.

I had a pretty great birthday yesterday. Thanks again for all the nice comments. My coworker made red velvet cupcakes and my boyfriend and I watched Dirty Dancing while eating delicious brisket sandwiches. Today the work day is kind of dragging but at least it’s Friday.

Although I’ve spent most of my adult life living in one of Chicago’s ‘inner ring suburbs,’ I was born and raised in the heart of Chicago and I still remain deeply committed to it. Its many cultural opportunities, beautiful lakefront and many parks (including bird-watching enclaves and numerous forest preserves that ring the city – and where overnight camping is even available in some), not to mention the home of my beloved White Sox! – often call me ‘home’ as I’m only a hop, skip, and a jump away.

So for today’s cp, I’m celebrating the ideal essence of its natural beauty in Trublooms Chicago, a soft floral fragrance of rose, lavender and violets – the Illinois state flower. Nurtured from seed to scent right here, all the flowers used in this fragrance were grown in Chicago gardens in the summer of 2012 and harvested in the fall. Additional sparkling watery fruity notes, according to Trublooms, remind one of a day spent along the shores of Lake Michigan, while base notes of blonde woods and skin musk reflect the city’s nightlife and blues heritage.

Well, I don’t know about all that, but on a bright spring day when my spring flowers are pushing through the soil, Trublooms Chicago perfectly suits the day as well as the city as I like to think of it and is my idea of its platonic ideal.

    Happy weekend to all!

I can still smell the last of yesterday’s Lyric. That might be a Platonic ideal of being just on the right side of too much – it’s sweet and rich, and lasts forever, so it’s a commitment. I have to be in the right frame of mind to wear it.

En Passant! If this isn’t a platonic ideal of a fragrance, I’m not sure what is. Gauzy, dreamy lilac and just the right amount of lift to make it hazy and atmospheric, with wheat for added realism. Olivia Giacobetti is SO GOOD.

Hey peeps! I won! I won! Through whatever random drawing schema Chris Rusak used, I won a 30mL bottle of Timbre!

    SOTD = Aftelier Alchemy

Alchemy is the platonic ideal of what’s old is new again. Citrus, floral, amber, insincerity’s, salt, vanilla. Some of the materials used in this came from the progenitor Alchemy Ms. Aftel created for the brand. Since it is both philosophically and physically platonic ideals, I am claiming extra credit!

In other news, I signed up to have breakfast with the Easter Bunny tomorrow. If I take decent pictures, I will post them on Instagram @hajusuuri.

I managed to assemble 7 bags for a charitable organization to pick up. I had been eyeing some golf and other type umbrellas to give away and so I did. With the threat of a dap morning and rain, I made sure to double the plastic packaging. The umbrellas were in the last batch by themselves and I started to layer the plastic cover. It then hit me that I should not have to do that because they are umbrellas and are meant to get wet and not get soggy! Oy!

I don’t think I participated today as I’m wearing 2 or 3 sprays of ISM in honor of my bub that arrived yesterday. And then I added a few drops of carrot seed oil for good measure on my arms.

Tomorrow 2 of my coworkers and I are going to our very popular (and favorite) local garden centre then for lunch to the pub. We need to blow off some steam because work has been sooooo stressful the last 4 months with the ongoing transition.

Then on Sunday, my hubby’s nephew is coming over for a pizza supper and to watch Game of Thrones. It’s nice that he wants to and is willing to spend time with us.
