Tuesday scent of the day 3/19

Posted by Robin on 19 March 2019 260 Comments

It's Tuesday, and there is one more day of winter to go (although you'd never know it from the temperature here). What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L'Artisan Dzongkha because someone mentioned it the other day. Tea at the moment is good old Irish Breakfast.

Reminder: on 3/22, celebrate the arrival of spring by wearing your favorite spring fragrance. (If it's fall where you are, you know what to do.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Renouveau Russe Teapot by Alberto Pinto ("Modern shapes and bold colors make the Renouveau Russe dinnerware pop. Inspired by Russian modern artists, it brings a fresh style statement to the table.") is $680 at Gracious Style)

I’m in Tom Ford Vert d’Encens which I tried last week. Maybe I’ll get a decant of it – a nice pine/fir relaxing green scent.

I tried this one on at a CCO once and all through the long drive home kept thinking “what is it that smells so good in the car?” Duh, it was me! I’d love a decant myself, you smell great!

I haven’t ever seen any of the Vert series yet. Limited distribution I guess. A pity, since all of them sounded interesting.

Love that teapot! Wearing DSH Chinchilla. Semi interesting side note – this is the only perfume that my cat reacts to, he sniffs and sniffs and will play bite my wrist when I wear it. Some animalics are really animalic, apparently.

I have heard of Kitten Fur but I can’t remember who makes it, is it an indie brand on Etsy? I know some brand with Women in the name make Winter Kitten, which sounded nice when I looked it up. My cat’s head smells fabulous, like roses and sunshine, very unlike his personality lol. How does Kitten Fur smell?

Hahaha almost the opposite of an indie brand on Etsy–it’s Demeter! I don’t know what kinds of ingredients they use, but given how cheap their stuff is, I can’t imagine they use any real animal products in it, so I don’t really know what my cats are responding to.

My healthy cat smells of cozy warmth; my sick cat smells different each week, and currently smells of Carolina sweetgrass. Demeter Kitten Fur smells a bit like my healthy cat, but they’ve amped up the warmth and powder and sweetness to a headache-inducing pitch :-/ as if I were being suffocated by my cat wrapping herself around my face.

It sounds like your cat smells wonderful 🙂

Most of the horses at the farm don’t seem to pay much attention to whatever perfume I happen to be wearing, with one exception. Chergui. Which smells like hay. I swear I am not making this up.

T-Rex is just her nickname, which she came by because of her habit of always running around with her mouth wide open and her teeth showing. Not in an aggressive way, but in an “I explore the world through my mouth” kind of way. ?

I am wearing my new travel spray of Cartier Carat from the splitmeet. IMO, perfect for spring. It’s a pretty floral with a nail polish opening. It has a strong opening but fades within an hour to low projection. The longevity isn’t great. I’m down to a skin scent at three hours. Still, it’s quite nice and I am happy to have it.

The media has gone to the dark side. Meaning it’s no longer about objective fact. It’s about bombast, emotionality, judgementalism, and “entertainment.”

I grew up before the days of CNN when news was fact and broadcasters and journalists kept their personal opinions to themselves. They were professionals- articulate, knowledgeable, and did their job well. Sad to see that level of reporting is no more.

I’m sorry this has hit so close to home. Safety is an illusion we create to make ourselves comfortable, but there has been and always will be a percentage of the population that prey on other humans. These people want to hurt, maim, and disrupt the fabric of society. Don’t let them kill your love of the world, and don’t let them alter your life by making you live in fear. ✌?

I refuse to live in fear. And I refuse to stop seeing the Good and the Beautiful around me.

I just went outside for an evening run, and saw a gorgeous sunset. And all was peaceful on the streets and in the parks. Folks walking their dogs, other runners passing by, people heading home on their bikes…. and then the moon appeared. I just stopped and stared at it for a while. ?

SL Feminite du Bois. Still trying to figure out if I like this one, the initial burst of powdery peach reminds me of Tresor, which makes me gag, but I like the cedar underneath…just not sure if I like it enough to justify keeping it. Never smelled the original version.

In another season transitioning scent, Naja. This one has grown on me. I just looked up the notes. Definitely one of those, “Oh now that you mention it…” I smell those notes, but I could not have identified them myself.

I’m in ELDO Rien today, from a dabber vial. It went on differently this morning than it has before – strong, and rather animalic. I nearly scrubbed! It finally settled after about an hour, but I was worried that my coworkers would not be very happy with my choice today. I think perhaps it’s better in colder weather, and/or just not quite right for me. Too bad, because when it’s good it’s just about perfect. Anyone have a recommendation of another incense and iris scent to try?

John Galiano maybe. But it’s not like Rien at all (which was very leathery, and it was not my kind of leather). There is definitely incense and iris in JG, but with plenty of plummy rose and a dose of aldehydes. And, alas, discontinued.

I wonder if maybe Comme des Garcons 2 Man will work for you. I did not try it myself, but it seems to share a lot of notes with Rien.

Rien is a bomb. I think you either love it or hate it.

A great iris and incense is Iris Nazarena, nothing like Rien, it’s light and subtle but it has plenty of character.

Yes, that and Dzongkha are my two main iris & incense scents. Rien was very animalic and ballooned up to huge proportions on me.

Oh, good to know – the other times I’ve sampled Rien I must have gone easier on the dabbing than I did today. I think I might even have a sample of Iris Nazarena around somewhere. Have never tried Dzongkha, but sounds like I should, stat!

You might give Miller Harris Etui Noir a sniff, but you also have to like leather with your iris and incense. It turns out as I only like baby leather that it’s too much for me, so I understand your predicament (my bottle will go to the swapmeet).

No-buys are no-fun. 🙁 But since I’m super-intrigued and the Etui Noir is not terribly expensive (and I have no self-control, apparently), I just blind-ordered a bottle and would be happy to send you a small decant to try if you’d like. Email me at scgrether in the land of the google mails if you’re interested.

I always apply Rien at least an hour before I go to work as it is really Too Much for the first bit. Used to spritz a little Demeter Gingerale to calm it down a bit. You might want to try Rien Intense, which ironically is a bit softer and I think incensey.

I’m basically a zombie today after a very long stressful work day wherein I had to wrangle lots of big personalities to stay on track with testing systems all day. I won’t go into much detail but there were a lot more IT challenges than I anticipated. Then my brain wouldn’t turn off last night even though I was dead tired so I got about 5hours of sleep. I’m wearing the light, springy Guerlain Idylle Love Blossom courtesy of ElisaP. It’s not one of my favorite spring perfumes, but it’s what I needed today – pretty, light, and easy.

On a far more cheerful note; I’m wearing an old spring favourite – Le temps d’une fĂȘte. Celebrating that I will be in Paris next week. Parfums de NicolaĂŻ, here I come.

Tea is MF Montagne d’Or. I will undoubtedly spend some time at my favourite MF shop on the Left Bank.

Oh I will. It may sound very cynical and I really don’t want to tread on anyones toes, but something like this was bound to happen here as well.
I live very close to the Belgian border and spend more time in Antwerp and Brussels than I do in any of the major Dutch cities.
So I saw all the safety measures deployed there arrive and go away again. It’s just a sign of the times.

Unfortunately I think you are right. It was bound to happen.

Like you, I visit Belgium and France quite often and when you want to enter a department store in Lille for instance, or a christmas market or a museum, you are required to show the contents of your bag to security. Also not unusual to see heavily armed police/army strolling through city centers. ?

So I am not totally surprised either. But its still a bit unnerving to experience a sort of shut down like yesterday and see the images of the road/tram you pass on a regularly basis on television.

Yep, it’s different if it involves your own city.
I lived in Enschede when the fatal explosion happened in 2000. That one affected me a lot more, and it wasn’t even intentional.
And a shut down must be very unnerving, so I feel for you!

I was probably not clear. Winter, one day of spring, and now the dreaded summer. I know I’m in the minority, but summer makes me irritable. I have the opposite of winter SAD, I think.

Legally, I could take fmla, up to 3 months. It has to be approved with a bunch of documentation and it’s unpaid leave. I used it once when my children were very little and had just been diagnosed with autism. I’m still taking the Echinacea, so hopefully I just needed to rest today.

A bright sunny day here, and I am thinking about going to the nursery to buy replacements for the perennials that died after last summer’s drought. I’m no gardener, but I think I can dig a hole and put a plant in it 🙂 I’m also thinking about a soaker hose to prevent another die-off this summer. SOTD is the lovely Promesse de l’Aube.

I’m posting late today. It was a glorious day, sunny, 70, and so green today. The bad side is that Houston is being hit by a vast black cloud coming from five huge tanks of burning chemicals! Supposedly the air quality is still safe but it certainly looks ominous out there! My mother is still in the hospital but doing better. I have to spend tomorrow negotiating for her to get into a rehab center. My SOTD is Tiger’s Nest. It’s very potent. I put it up against Calling All Angels, both incense scents with some resins to add sweetness. Plus some rose. After two days of testing, I’ve concluded that the strongest note in Tiger’s nest isn’t incense but amber. That overpowers everything else so that I don’t get any nuances such as absinthe. It’s nice but I won’t be going for a FB.

I like Calling all Angels’ opening better than Tiger’s Nest, but over time Tiger’s Nest becomes more rewarding to me, and it lasts longer than CAA. Course, amber is my go to note.
