Almost-Friday, plus the Ides of March. And, 49 dead in Christchurch.
We're celebrating Olivier Friday. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Olivier Cresp or Olivier Gillotin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other Olivier connection you can devise.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Valentino Valentina, by Olivier Cresp with Alberto Morillas.
Reminder: on 3/22, celebrate the arrival of spring by wearing your favorite spring fragrance. (If it's fall where you are, you know what to do.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
On project with Penhaligons Juniper Sling by Olivier Cresp. Haven’t worn it in ages and I’m really enjoying it today.
Nice pick, and would think you’d have a twin before the day is out!
And post shower I’ve switched to the other Olivier – Tobacco Vanille.
Does that mean double points? I think it does!
I does! ?
I’m wearing le labo’s musc 25 today, but if I’d read the news before I got dressed and went to work I probably wouldn’t have worn any perfume. Such a sad day.
Sigh. Hugs to everyone and anyone who needs one.
So awful..
I wish perfume was the answer…to everything!
Just awful. Am out of words to cover awful news.
Not participating but smelling good in Slumberhouse Sana which seems to go nicely with the almost spring weather here
Feels like almost-spring here too.
Olivier Polge
Chanel Misia
Partial points
The sun it out….Kids are at school..I am drinking a coffee at home in peace. Dolci far niente
Sounds lovely. Enjoy your peaceful morning.
Thank you!!! ❤️
Brigitte
❤?
And we are finally getting some normal weather ???
Crossing fingers! Almost 70 for today! ?
55 here… I’ll take it ?☀️??
Wah, too hot for this time of year!
Agreeing with hajusuuri about the temps today! I’m not interesting in going back into the deep freeze, but some temps in the low 50’s would be lovely right now.
50 degrees today in Montreal. Of course tomorrow it’s back to 32 and below for a few days, but then back up by the end of the week with sun! Spring is coming!
Wow 50 in Montreal for this time of year is fantastic!
I don’t know this perfume, tell me about it.
It’s my custom blend. The formulation is from 1998. It’s grapefruit, lilac, violet, vanilla, musk and sandalwood. It smells like a creamy, soft lilac. Last time I wore it my eldest was only two. I am wearing it today because the girls come home for spring break and I am curious as to what they think of it as it’s an early bday present from one of them lol ?
How luxurious to have a custom blend.
Luckily she still had the recipe on file !
Enjoy the heck out of your tribe being home!
Thanks, Angela!!!
Hey, that’s really cool?
The price was super cool too because I had a discount code???
And I forgot to say Sarah Horowitz is the perfumer.
I was intrigued enough to check out her website. What a cool concept!
It really is. When I had it made in1998 we communicated via letters. And back then her company was in it’s infancy and called Creative Scentualizations. I still have the original letter she sent me describing it, a copy of my letter and an original one page folded brochure of her products. She and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz both started out together blending in a perfume shop in Boston, if I am not mistaken. And I think to this day they are still friends.
Its infancy…..I don’t know why spellcheck keeps changing my words on my phone….so annoying.
Wow! Great backstory-thanks! Maybe one day I will give it a try, I love the idea of a custom creation.
I am really enjoying it after all these years.
My sister and I were at their perfume store on Newbury St. in Boston way back when. It was called Essence Studio or something like that. My sister stuck with Dawn!
Yes I remember your story about how your sister only wore her fragrances!!!
I’d like to hear what your college students thought of your SOTD today.
They said I smell good but neither one of them asked to “borrow” my bottle ( yet).
Horrible news from Christchurch. As usual, it’s hard to find the right words in such cases, but I am really sorry for the people who died, their friends and family.
Testing Tom Ford Vert d’Encens by Olivier Gillotin.
The opening is dry and green, but then the scent gets warmer and sweeter as pine and fir resins become stronger. However, I have been wearing it for about five hours and find that it’s not as resinous and sweet as Fille en Aiguilles or Winter Delice, for example. Incense (and dry woods) is mostly in the dry-down. May be my opinion will change next time I wear Vert d’Encens, but so far I would call it an aromatic woody scent, not an oriental one. Nice. Soft dry green notes (kind of like pine needles) are my favorite part. Moderate sillage, decent staying power (I can still smell a pleasant smoky and woody fragrance on my wrists).
You smell wonderful. I really like Vert d’Encens.
Thank you! I like it more and more.
You do smell great. I like it too, don’t reach for it often enough.
Glannys, I think you put words to the NZ terror attack so eloquently that I would like to echo what you said.
Thank you.
Wow, Vert d’Encens sounds great! Your description is appealing to me very much.
In 10 Corso Como by Olivier Gillotin. Have a peaceful Friday everyone!
That is a good one for a peaceful Friday. ✌️
It is! So relaxing and meditative!
Twins!
Hi twin! We smell wonderful! ?
There’s a 10 Corso Como tribe here today!
Cacharel Noa thanks to a fabulous NSTer.
Friday! I’m off after today for a week and tomorrow I am traveling to university to see the bigs. I am so excited! My daughter will come home for a week over spring break and I’m looking forward to some mom-daughter time spent shopping, lunching and hanging out. I just love spending time with her.☺️
Enjoy your time with your family!!!! Mine come home this afternoon ?
Thanks cm8! You too!!
Noa is such an easy fragrance to wear..
It really is. Easy is my favorite perfume category.?
Enjoy your visit! I just got back home from visiting with my mom (and dad) for a few days down in the California desert – she and I are best friends now, which is something I wouldn’t have believed possible when I was 17 – and it was a wonderfully fun and relaxing time?
That was supposed to end with !, not ? Fat fingers. 😉
Thanks!
Your visit sounds so nice. I consider my mom to be one of my best friends too. It probably helps that she is “only” 20 years my senior and I am an only child. I get to spend a week with her and my dad in Florida at the end of the month and I can’t wait!
Enjoy your vacation and visit!
Thanks lillyjo!
Sounds sweet <3 enjoy spring break!
Thanks Koyel- looking forward to it!
We’re vacation twins! I also have the following Monday off as well because I have to use up all the vacation carryover days by end of March or I lose them. First world problems.
At least you are using them up! I knew someone who lost 28 vacation days he had carried over b/c he did not use them. Foolish.
The guy who usually sits next to me has to be forced to take time off (I think I may have mentioned him before). I swear he probably spends his days off staring at the walls. He’s supposed to do one good thing for himself each month and from September last year to end of February, he only did 2 things I assessed as qualifying. Sad.
So foolish. It’s literally like flushing money down the drain.
Vacation AND Florida twins! After my week of staycation I will work for three days (which is a week for me) and then fly to Florida for a week with my younger daughter. Can’t wait!
Enjoy your vacation, maadtowngirl!
Stupid fat fingers! Sorry about the typo, madtowngirl!
Lol. Thanks Jalapeño!
Sad morning. The feeling that I’m not doing enough gets bigger every day.
I went with an OliviA and am wearing Thé pour un Été. I bought it to have something light to splash on in hot weather but it has become one of my top 5 desert island scents. If I go too long without wearing it I start to crave it.
We are house twins and have resorted to the same strategy (I chose an Olivia as well). Thé pour un été is a lovely and summery fragrance. I really like it too.
Never too late to start doing!
Good choice with Olivia!
Wearing post-1989 Rochas Femme. Not even sure what to say about Christchurch. Words are not adequate.
Wore Femme to today. Praying for peace…
Pacifica Sandalwood. I have the solid perfume and a rollerball, and the solid perfume in particular has a distinct Fruity Pebbles top note that always cheers me up. Good thing too, as this has been a tough week. Putting lots of love out into the universe today ❤️
Fruity pebbles would be an interesting top note. I got cocoa pebbles from Tihota.
I often get Fruity Pebbles from perfumes that have a prominent citrus note. Not sure what it is – maybe bergamot?
Speaking of bergamot – in the recent past, I’ve heard two friends pronounce bergamot like “BER-ga-moh,” where the t is silent, while I always thought it was “BER-ga-mot” with the t pronounced. Have I been saying it wrong this whole time?
Hmm…I pronounce it with a silent t, but I am no expert. Maybe it’s one that can go either way.
No, you are correct, in French it is bergamote, the e at the end causes the t to be pronounced rather than silent.
That’s some hyperforeignism right there, like people who say “fleur de lee” or “coo de grah.”
Was running a little late this morning, so went with Nahema, which is my go to these days. It’s really helping; I find beauty to be a great comfort, whatever it is you find beautiful. Like many recently, have been feeling the effects of stress and overwork, but the news from New Zealand puts my small life into perspective. These things don’t even surprise me anymore, which is both sad and worrying.
I know how you feel <3 I did want to remind you not to trivialize or bury your own problems in the face of these bigger and more horrible problems in the world. Your problems might be much smaller, but they’re YOURS, and you can’t help the world if you haven’t helped yourself first.
Smart words Koyel, hard as they are to remember.
Yeah, they are hard to remember 🙁 especially in the face of tragedy.
Thank you, Koyel. It’s a tricky thing, finding one’s balance in the world, isn’t it? Your words are kind and wise. I am very glad it’s someone like you talking to our future scientists. : )
Oh gosh, turns out I’m glad about that too. One of the other panelists was spewing nonsense about needing a resume in high school and how grades are the most important thing of all and how important it is to go to brand-name schools. She was needlessly stressing these kids out and, in my opinion, not at ALL focusing on the important things. Luckily, we have nearly identical backgrounds (we both went to equally fancy high schools, colleges, and grad schools, and now both have the same job title), so I felt like I was better able to convince these kids of what I think is most important (finding something you’re good at and that you enjoy, because you’re going to have to spend so much time doing it; going to a school that fosters the kind of growth you’re interested in; prioritizing research and recommendations over GPA). Haha, this has nothing to do with your situation, but I was just SO MAD at her for pushing things that I find superficial and I was so relieved I could be there to counter her.
Good for you, Koyel!
Um. Hope you can help make sure she’s never on another similar panel. Sheesh. And in light of the new cheating scandal, too.
That’s why you were chosen to attend! I bet you will be a mentor for few!
UGH! Brand name schools do not necessarily have the best of everything. And, yes, GPA is not the be all and end all. I’ve heard sad stories from one of my 20-something friends who dropped out of college because one of her parents wanted her to study “prestigious” stuff, and not what she was interested in. I doubt she will ever go back to college.
Excellent Koyel. The advice people give in these situations often makes me want to shriek. (I often *do* shriek.)
You smell beautiful November Rose, I hope it helps.
Funny I was just thinking the same thing, in that one find innate pleasure in beautiful things. They create joy and somehow offer hope of all that is good & possible.
Thank you, AngelaB. Innate pleasure in beautiful things, creating joy and offering hope. You said if far better than me.
: )
I tried Nahema a couple of days ago. Beautiful indeed. You smell gorgeous!
Thank you so much, Glannys!
I agree with Koyels’ advice here.
I learned at 40 to not marginalize yourself and what you are doing/dealing with/managing. A very kind therapist taught me to give myself that permission. Other things big and small will happen.
Nahema is so gorgeous! What an amazing go to!
Commando so far, because I’m off work today and am cuddled up in bed with my coffee, waiting for the house to warm up – Mr. G and I have been out of town and we turn the heat way down when the house is unoccupied. It seems to be taking longer than usual to get to a comfortable level. Either that or my body just doesn’t want to emerge from the cocoon yet.
I had set out my dwindling sample of 10CC for the CP today, but I can hear several other bottles calling my name insistently. I took all the wrong scents on vacation, and now that I have access to everything I’m having trouble deciding which to choose. Will probably end up in 10CC, to avoid arguing with them all. ?
Sorry you took all the wrong scents, but hope it was otherwise a fun trip!
Did you end up in 10CC after all?
No – I ended up wearing Carthusia Mediterraneo. It was one scent that I wished I had thought to bring to the desert but didn’t, and as a result it called the loudest today. 🙂
Hi all and happy Friday!
My SOTD is Alessandro Dell’ Acqua, designed by Olivier Cresp. I love the combination of herbal (geranium & coriander), floral (sweet pea & peony) incense notes. It’ll be perfect for today’s weather and tonight’s outing!
So excited to be seeing Matt Alber at the Nikko Hotel tonight with friends. I am not familiar with his music but it should be fun! 😀
That’s a great scent! Very uplifting and happy. Enjoy your outing!
Thanks Cazaubon! 🙂 It will end sometime after my usual bedtime, I expect to be very sleepy tomorrow!
Oh, and I also wanted to say how much I love your cat and the name Smokey Toes. I had a black and white tuxedo cat with white paws that we used to call Sugar Toes. 🙂
Aww, thanks cazaubon! And Sugar Toes sounds adorable! I do love tuxedo kitties, they have loads of personality!
Lavandes Trianon for me today by Olivier Guillotin. I am very surprised by the Christchurch shooting, NZ seems like such a peaceful place, but the article Robin linked to says they have a known white supremacist movement there. So terribly sad for the victims and families.
Live in the moment, wear the good perfume! You never know.
Without getting political, or any more political than necessary, I don’t think there are places left on earth without scary stuff.
I only had two choices, 10 Corso Como, which I love, and Noa, which I always forget about. I’m wearing Noa.
Good call!
Twins!?
Triplets!
Noa is often overlooked in my collection.
SOTD = TF Tobacco Vanille
A friend of mine recently moved to New Zealand. It’s sickening, both the news and the way that it’s being presented, most outlets refusing to call it for the white nationalist terrorist attack it really is. Things are getting scarier every day it seems. If anyone needs a dose of kindness to balance it out, looks like the new season of Queer Eye drops on Netflix today.
The parsing of words by the media is awful. Fortunately, the prime minister of New Zealand did a strong statement this morning and rejected the bs for what it is- BS.
You smell absolutely wonderful.
This.
Well said, Dorsey.
Dorsey, have you been in touch with your friend since this happened?
Yes I have, she is fine. She’s not in Christchurch, she’s on the north island, but it’s not something that happens every day there so people are shaken. She’s gonna take a social media break – my feeds are a mess, I can only imagine how bad hers are.
I genuinely thought half the people posting here would be in Olivier Cresp’s Angel, but I guess I’m the first.
BUT JUST A DROP. It’s still potent stuff despite its reformulations — not as sweet as when it was launched, I think, but still a patchouli powerhouse. I don’t love it the way I did back in 1992: I think I just got used to it, the way the Berliner Hauptbahnhof is astonishing the first time you arrive but just another big railway station the hundredth time you pass through it. (The 2013 Liqueur de Parfum is still a work of art, though.)
Pyramus, my comment is further down but I did plan on Angel today. As you say, though, it’s powerful and I have to really be in the mood to wear it.
I love and wear both (prefer The 2013 Liqueur de Parfum more though). Have you worn Angel Sun Essence? It’s really enjoyable, and much more refreshing.
I never have tried it. The idea of a refreshing Angel kind of boggles the mind: every iteration I’ve ever smelled banks on that rich-thick-sweet feeling, even the weirdly pepperminty Eau de Star.
TWINS! Also just a drop, and I still smell it hours later. Such tenacity…
I seriously considered Angel for today, but I just wasn’t feeling it.
The news out of Christchurch was a really sad and sobering way to start the day. Heartbreaking. Like cazaubon, I was shocked to see something like this come out of NZ–those of us in North America clearly have an idealized view of NZ. (I suppose I should only speak for myself.)
My 10CC sprayer wasn’t working, so I started looking for my Tobacco Vanille, but my hand got distracted and I ended up with Lonesome Rider. It’s very comforting and cheering.
For those of you wondering: the blackberry lime pie was REALLY REALLY GOOD. We made some vanilla whipped cream to go with it. It was a delicious end to our pi day. If you’re in the habit of dropping by Whole Foods but are wary of buying baked goods at any place other than a bakery, I very highly advocate their bakery in general and their blackberry lime pies specifically. (Their gaufres liegeoises are trash though.)
I’m drooling on my keyboard!
I’m drooling a little remembering how good that pie was 🙂
You smell great and that pie sounds awesome.
Thank you! And it was, and you should consider trying it! Yum yum.
Koyel, you’re tempting me to break my “cut down on baked goods” pledge…
Ooh, well, cutting down on baked goods is certainly an admirable goal. None of us need to consume as much processed sugar and flour as most of us do. But. You know. The occasional pie is ok 🙂 I don’t want to make you break your health goals; I’m trying to get healthier too! But if you do break your pledge, you need to make it count, and I think this pie would be worth it.
Koyel, you talked me into stopping by the Italian bakery on my way home. Pastry enabler pin for you!
Oh yay! Yum! What did you get?
Haven’t gotten there yet, but I’m daydreaming about a Chinese cookie (they look approximately like this: https://pabakery.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/IMG_4302-1.jpg)
Yum, looks tasty!
Oh yes! I wholeheartedly agree that WF has great baked goods. Their brown butter chocolate chip cookies are some of the best cookies I’ve had in my entire life! Also their two bite brownies…and their pumpkin pie…and…(okay I’m gonna stop typing now)
Oh gosh you’re making me salivate now. Have you had their pistachio cake??! How about their orange cake?! Both are truly amazingly excellent. I haven’t had their pumpkin pie yet, but yep, those are quite some brownies and cookies <3
No-the last cake I got from there was the Berry Chantilly Cake.?I will look for those!
Oh I’ve been meaning to try that one. Mmmmm.
I think I need to make a trip to WF – I love blackberry pie!
I think you need to bake a blackberry pie 😉
and then pass me a slice 🙂
Are you people on the Whole Foods payroll?! Because it’s working . . . .
Hahaha I probably own some AMZN I have forgotten about 🙂
(And yeah, I’d love to make sure that other woman is never on another student panel. Not sure how I can make sure of that, but I CAN try to cut her off faster in the
future.)
One the one hand, I am glad that Whole Foods is very much out of the way for me. OTOH, it’s also kind of bumming me out that Whole Foods is very much out of the way. So many tasty goodies being discussed! ?
I had alot to choose from today. I went with the new to me 10 Corso Como (thanks to a generous Nster) because I wanted to be twins and triplets with people today?
I think this will be great in the summer.
Like everyone here, my heart goes out to the people of New Zealand.
You smell great! How do you like it compared to Tam Dao? I need to revisit them side by side.
I prefer 10 Corso Como to Tam Dao by far. It seems much more complex and beautiful to my nose.
Good to know! Have you tried Maison Louis Marie no.4?
No I haven’t. Is it similar to 10 CC?
It’s been awhile since I drained my sample of 10cc. To my nose it was more like Tam Dao. I would like to compare all three. I am on a quest for my perfect sandalwood. (and perfect musk)
Have you tried Etro Musk? Pixel sent me a sample and I really like it.
Oh and if you don’t mind oil a nice creamy sandalwood is Now Essentials sandalwood oil. It’s blended with a carrier oil so it isn’t overpowering…. sometimes I wear it on my face as moisturizer because I love how it smells. The Vitacost version is excellent too.
Would you like a sample of it? I can send you some; please email me at kobhatta at the gmail.
I’ve actually never tried Tam Dao. I only sprayed 2 sprays of this, and it’s my first wearing. I like it though, it might remind me of Santal Carmine but more summery.
I think they’re completely different and I love both!
I think we are scent triplets or quadruplets at this point! Maybe even quintuplets!
Thanks for mentioning Santal Carmine… I knew that 10CC reminded me of another sandalwood, but I couldn’t remember which one. You’re talking about the Atelier, right?
I don’t see much resemblance between 10CC and Tam Dao at all, FWIW.
Yep, Atelier. Love it.
Participating in Lavande Trianon today, from a little decant my sister gave me. It’s not my favorite in the line, but I am a lavender fan, so I’m enjoying.
Off for a walk in this spring weather with my visiting sister. And a stop at the Met to see the Dutch master paintings.
How nice! Have a lovely time.
I was at the Met to see Masterpieces in October. It was great- hope you and your sister enjoy it as much as I did!
That Met exhibit sounds like it is well worth the trip. Enjoy!
Watching the news is unbearable anymore. There aren’t words to express the heartbreak.
The only CP perfume I have is Angel and I’m not up to it today, plus our taste of spring yesterday has been followed by winter’s return today, so my sotd is Commes des Garcons Kyoto. So soothing.
So very true ringthing.
1) I forgot how much I love Kyoto!
2) The world is mad.
Re: 2
And dumb.
and heartbreaking.
Didn’t Hemmingway write the world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places?
I don’t watch the news, haven’t for many months. It’s just too depressing and aggravating.
Joining today’s gang wearing 10CC. One of my old favorites, although it took me a while to warm up to it.
Have a peaceful weekend, all!
Definitely a bigger group than Angel, which is a surprise.
There’s a whole bunch of 10CC’ers today!
No Oliviers in my collection- the 2 I owned have been rehomed and hopefully enjoyed. It’s 65 and cloudy so I’m wearing the bright Jour d’Hermes Absolu from a Sephora sample I had floating around in a drawer.
I went to a book reading last night- The Art of Dying Well… by Katy Butler who is also a Buddhist ordained by Thich Nhat Hanh. It was very uplifting and moving and a stark contrast to the news today. Not everyone will have the luxury of the choice of dying well. Hate isn’t new, but it’s been given a new open freedom, it seems. This week there was a poster of RBG in my nearest subway station that was vandalized with a swastika over her face and the words “die jew b*&ch”. We have a white supremacist element in our neighborhood and the Nazi graffiti has gotten worse in the past few years. Very disheartening and scary. Sending love out to New Zealand today!
Oh but you smell fresh and wonderful. And NZ needs love. We all do.
That we do!
The hate message you described on the poster is appalling and person who did it is a coward.
OTOH, the book reading you attended sounds interesting.
Keep your chin up. You smell lovely today!
Thanks Petunia ❤ Sadly there’s a lot of that in my neighborhood. I think the thought that one of these people could go beyond graffiti to full on violence doesn’t seem unrealistic anymore.
She’s a wonderful author and person and I really recommend her last book Knocking on Heaven’s Door to anyone who is in the position of having to care for a loved one.
Elisa P, I am a huge fan of Thay! Sounds like an amazing book reading. I bonded with a girl on the Q train who was reading a book by Thay and her and I talked from 96th to Canal. Every Monday I read my 2 little ones his books, did you know he writes for kids too!
Blessings!
That’s a great subway story! I can see him writing for kids…
Eliza P – about 15 years ago I was able to sit and walk with Thay at the DeerPark Monastery in SoCal.
It was a peaceful few days in what was a chaotic personal time and I am also watching him die well and teach others.
I don’t ascribe to any religion, but I remember Pope John Paul also teaching people to die well during the last weeks of his life.
These are important lessons of love and closure that help us face the ugly side.
Wow. How lucky for you! Sounds like a comforting experience.
I work in end of life care so anything I can glean and apply to my own life or pass on to others I look out for (I’m pan-spiritual). A lot of the talk focused on how we live and love (which is generally a predictor of how we die).
Can you explain that last part a little more? I’ve been through alot of death with family and friends, I don’t understand the predictor of how we die part. I hate death.
Oh this makes me sad Lillyjo, having been through a lot of death with my family and friends too. I also can say I’ve often been surprised by how people respond to their own approaching deaths. Sometimes it’s how I would predict and other times not. But it is almost always awful. Good thoughts to you.
Thank you so much, Amy. Good thoughts back to you. It’s hard because there really isn’t a day that my heart isn’t missing or grieving. I, Of course am grateful for life and the love around me, but the missing never goes away.
Elisa P, thank you for what you do.
Seconding Jalapeno’s thanks.
Thirding
It was wonderful, as I look back on it.
Oddly, or perhaps not, the person who encouraged me to go died very suddenly, much too soon, much too young.
As I have spent the last years being very much ” a closer” I was determined my mother and father would have a good death with nothing left unsaid and no fear.
I will repeat what others have said here, thank you for your work. it is special calling.
Holy crap that’s terrifying 🙁
CP is 10 Corso Como, Oliver Gillotin.
At least I brought enough samples to ‘play’.
Hiya scent twin! ?
I noticed that Regina had resorted to wearing an Olivia fragrance. Considering the amount of perfume I own and considering how many fragrances today’s Oliviers have created, or co-created it’s a bit of a miracle that I don’t own any of theirs, not even a sample.
I went through a bottle of L’Eau par Kenzo when it came out but have often wondered why afterwards. Must have been my fresh phase.
I chose Dzing! because I think it’s the best thing she has ever done plus it layers well with my other SOTD, Songe d’un bois d’été. The latter has some bay leaf notes and as bay leaf oil is used in Alep soap which also contains plenty of Olive oil, I thought it might at least give me some partial points for today.
I was shocked about New Zealand, had not expected it to happen there. I’ve never visited but it has always struck me as quite a decent country not tending to extremes, but then I had never expected the attack that happened in Norway a few years ago either.
These are difficult times.
I was surprised by Norway too, and by NZ. I guess it is time to stop being surprised.
I ended up with Santa Maria Novella’s Cala Rossa as I don’t have one that first today’s theme. It smells like beach and sun. 🙂
Beach and sun sounds good!
I only have one perfume that is on project, and it’s Avon Bond Girl, gifted to me a long time ago. I have a few drops on and I’m not sure if something happened in the bottle, but there seems to have a slight rum note present, so it is a bit interesting at the moment.
Oh fun! Maybe it deepened with some age & evaporation.
Post shower will reach for TF tobacco vanille.
Very sad day for NZ and the human race. We lost a family member one year ago today in a chopper crash in Iraq, the whole crew was killed. So there is remembering and sorrow for someone so young.
Hug those you ❤️
I am so sorry.
I am so sorry for your loss, may their memory be a blessing.
Thank you, it is hard. His sister is grieving so.
So terrible. Sending you hugs on this day of remembrance for you and your family.
What a difficult anniversary, hugs apsara!
My condolences apsara.
Full credit calculated as follows:
SOTD = Angel Muse
Spawn of Angel (Olivier Cresp) gets half credit
Yesterday, someone in the same train car wore Angel. I got the taste in my mouth, my hair and my coat – this is at least half credit, no?
I think I need to decant my cozy comfort and favorite perfumes into bottles labeled Peace, Hope and Love.
And what three would you chose?
Cuir Beluga
Chanel No.19 EDP
Sultan Pasha Irisoir
Nice ??
Thank you!
Need the category of each pls!
Yes!
You need to give me your category for each of the 3 you listed! ?
Peace – Cuir Beluga (my comfort scent)
Hope – No.19 EDP (green, uplifting)
Love – I chose Irisoir but it could be any fragrance and this one will likely keep changing.
Decanting your fragrances into special labeled bottle is a GREAT idea.
Maybe it could be a Community Project – wear what you would decant into a bottle labeled Peace or Hope or Love or Peace, Hope and Love!
It was probably me you smelled yesterday. Sorry ?
???
????
??!
Funny ???
Too bad that your “Taste of Angel” was literal yesterday! ?
I know, right?
Good one!?
Olivier Cresp (with Marie Salamagne) – Yves Rocher Accord Chic. This is from their Secrets d’Essences (higher priced) line – the 50ml goes for $72, which in perfume is still pretty inexpensive. I snagged it during the store’s sale last summer in Paris so it was practically free. I don’t love the pink pepper opening but the rest is really nice and, in fact, feels “chic” – peppery spicy iris and incense, so sweetness to take over.
I never got to try that one, it sounds nice!
I am in Kismet from the split meet and on my way to the post office to mail. It is more fleeting then it was when I tested in the summer. So funny how wearher effects olfactory expression.
Horrible news from NZ. We will be discussing media coverage of this in my class.
So good to do – and so difficult.
In Chanel 5 parfum, a recent estate sale snag (a fun find of maybe 3 ml). Off theme, because all my Oliver’s are on the to be swapped pile already and I didn’t want to revisit and start dithering.
Shocked by NZ news – like many others here, I had assumed that New Zealand was safe and friendly – in retrospect, that seems so naive. A shoutout to our NZ members on this board to say sorry that you now have to be part of the club. 🙁
I don’t even have a sample to participate today so I am wearing Mohur extrait. Surely one of my top ten.
Adding my healing wishes for NZ. So sad.
You smell stunning, it is a sad day.
Thanks dear.
“Senseless acts of beauty” aren’t so senseless right now.
1) To quote my favorite philosopher, Karl Popper*, who wrote In The Open Society and it’s Enemies while in New Zealand during World War II:
““Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. […] We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.”
In other words, bigots are the true enemies of a free and open society; we must be ready to shun and reject them outright in order to have tolerant and free society.
2) SOTD: Am in Fresh Cream- no Olivers in my collection!
* I did my final project for the philosophy part of my degree on Popper. His theories ALSO loom large in the natural sciences.
Hear hear.
Good quotes there from Popper. I studied with Adolf Grunbaum, one of his sharper critics, but a serious one, with good reasons for his critique. The point about not tolerating the intolerant is also (I take it) the key conclusion of Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem, a fabulous book.
Ooooh. In my physics classes we gave a moment or three to his ideas of space/time theory, although I confess I did not finish his book until YEARS after leaving school. One of my professor’s children got to see him at Carnegie when he was there.
I knew I had some of My People(tm) here on NST!
And now I know what I am gonna borrow from the library this weekend!
Ha we could get philosophical here but it probably veers too political. ?
Celebrating one more shift after today in BoE! Woot woot! Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
Happy Friday, Deva!!!
Woot woot!?
Huzzah for one more day left! ?? Do you have a new destination figured out yet?
Yes, I’m headed to Washington, which will be a great jumping off point for Alaska. Can. Not. Wait! ?
Woo hoo!
People are freaking nuts, everyone shooting everyone for no reason. Spent a grand total of $120 yesterday on dog food and their medications in Cuir Beluga. I didn’t like Cuir Beluga one bit. Sweet plastic is all I got out of it. Spending the day in Deneuve extrait to recover from this week’s stress. Good news is that a Barkbox is coming today. Can’t wait for the dogs’ expressions.
You smell wonderful !
I am happy for your doggies and their big surprise today !
Oh, they had a reason…just a hateful and evil one.
I loved Barkbox when I did it. I canceled because they sent more treats than we needed, but the toys we adorable and held up well.
Clicked on the links to the Olivier names and realized that I had an old bottle of Red Door. Unlike some of the other perfumes I got in probably the late 1980s and early 1990s, it had been kept in a box. The perfume is a light brown in color. It doesn’t smell too strong to me, which is a good thing. It smells pleasant to me.
I remember Red Door as being a powerhouse back in the day. ?
Same!
Hi. Most of you don’t know me. I signed up for an account last week after buying a half full bottle of J’adore on ebay and decided I really needed to participate in the next damage poll (cuz I bought too much other stuff too). I posted a few days ago to say that the package was probably stolen. It showed up today!
Here’s the whole crazy story. On Saturday I get a shipping update saying the package was delivered that afternoon but it’s not in my mailbox. I contact the seller who says the p.o. probably scanned it to improve their numbers and I’ll get it Monday. On Monday it doesn’t show up and on Tues I go the the p.o. After waiting 20 minutes while they check in the back, the manager comes out and says that the carrier delivered it on Tues and gps locator on the scanner says he was outside my house when it scanned and “there was a young man there”. I asked a bunch of questions, she calls the carrier back and they stick to their story. I conclude it’s stolen.
Late in the day, there is a knock on the door. It’s the carrier. He says “I’m the one who delivered your package, but not here, across the street. I’ve already been there and he’s already taken it back to the p.o. You’ll probably get it today or tomorrow.” But it doesn’t show up. I write a note to my neighbor (because they are both deaf and I don’t know sign language) and he gets back to me and says they never got it! So now I don’t know who is lying and abandon all hope and ebay denies my claim and I won’t be getting money back.
And today it was in my mailbox when I got home! I don’t know who I owe for this kind of luck, but I am very happy for it.
Welcome, CateP! Whew, what a story. My bf had a package stolen from our apartment a couple years ago, but we never did find out what happened to it.
Welcome! And such an ordeal! I hope your bottle is well-loved to make up for it.
Welcome and glad to hear you finally got your bottle!
Good news!
I will welcome you again ?
Thanks everyone!
Welcome, and glad it did come, partly because you have it, and partly because it helps restore faith in people.
Welcome–I’ve had ridiculous post office encounters as well. Glad you got the bottle in the end.
Welcome! Nice to have you here!
Hello again! Glad to hear that your wayward bottle showed up after all.
Dang, that is crazy! Glad you got your package.
Glad your bottle showed up! In a small way, it restores your faith in humanity. Enjoy!
Glad you are joining us, what a saga with the package and happy for you you got the bottle in the end.
I must be a fan of the ‘Oliviers’ because, surprisingly for a cp, I have numerous choices today. So I was able, as I often like to do, to select my fragrance not only on my mood but also on the season and the weather. My SOTD is Cacharel Noa Fleur (Olivier Cresp), a charming, gentle scent I bought for a song on clearance years ago and almost forgot I had. It’s perfect for today: with its peony-rose-hibiscus heart it reminds me, on the cusp of spring, that if I’m just patient a little while longer, at least 2 of those 3 flowers will soon be blooming in my garden, and its coffee note warms up a typically chilly/rainy March day here. I like to add a further touch of gourmand and heighten the delicious coffee note by layering it over Laura Mercier Crème Brûlée soufflé. Mmm, good!
Wishing everyone comfort from both personal and world woes – and the hope of spring!
Yes to comfort and hope!
I’m cheating! I’m cheating!
Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano 😉
Nice choice!
I’d say half credit for a different Olivier!
LOL, half credit for sure!
Yesterday at noon all the schoolkids went on strike and marched down our main street protesting against climate change. They were wonderful. They carried banners and made speeches and were passionate and articulate and I think the whole city was filled with immense pride. By the time I walked home news was just coming in of a shooting in my old home town. Two mosques were attacked at a time when citizens were at prayer. I knew the places well…one of the mosques where seven people were gunned down was next door to my old dentist in a very ordinary part of town with supermarkets and local businesses, just a suburb. The police don’t carry guns here, they are not part of our culture and to watch the news yesterday was as disturbing as anything I have ever seen. All the life and hope that the kids had inspired seemed to drain away into black emptiness. What a world.what a shame.
I’m so sorry Kanuka, it’s such a shock when something like that happens, especially when you live in a country that is normally quiet.
Years ago our royal family was attacked, I remember the shock so well. No one had ever even attempted to harm them, plus it happened in a very quiet town, where nothing much goes on most of the time.
It’s a great shame and I hope that NZ manages to keep its cool and its spirit.
I am sad for NZ, this kind of violence is so antithetical to everything the country stands for. So glad to hear the PM describe the incident for what it was, a white racist terrorist attack. May the attackers names and memories be blotted out, as we say in Hebrew. Yemach shmo v’zichronoh.
I was thinking of you this morning. My heartfelt sympathies to you and all affected.
I am deeply grieved for NZ. And angry. It’s about time we stop talking about these acts as isolated incidents… in a long string of ‘isolated’ incidents.
Oh, what a horrible juxtaposition. I have many friends in Norway and know from their experience with the mass shooting there how devastating such an event is in a country that isn’t used to them (as we so unfortunately now are here in the US). My friends told me that Norway is basically so small that everyone knew somebody who died in the massacre and it’s probably about the same in New Zealand. I share my sympathy but also feel immense respect for those children who marched, because climate change is just a horrendous threat for the not-so-distant-anymore future.
I am so glad you checked in today. I was worried about you and our other NZ members.
Sending peace and love Kanuka. New Zealand is in my prayers.
I’m so sorry Kanuka. It’s horrible when something like this happens in a place that is near and dear to one’s heart. Hugs.
I am really sorry, Kanuka. Just really sorry.
I think my heart just feels broken. I was at work early so didn’t hear about this until now.
Oh Kanuka what an awful day of contrasts. I thought of you immediately.
I’m so sorry Kanuka. May the schoolkids keep standing up for what is right. In the words of MLK Jr. “It is not enough to say “We must not wage war.” It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it. We must concentrate not merely on the negative expulsion of war, but on the positive affirmation of peace.”
And one more quote from MLK, Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
Sending hugs Kanuka at this difficult time.
I almost wore TM Angel today, but I am still battling this upper respiratory thing. I have to go lightly, and while I do enjoy wearing Angel, she is no lightweight.
I am wearing Lancome Oranges Bigarades today.
I wanted to add my wishes for peace for everyone today.
You smell wonderful.
In what I think is my only floral fruity gourmand by Olivier Cresp: Anais Anais Premier Delice: pear and chocolate goe very well together and the flower notes are delicate and lovely.
NZ there are no words.
Juniper Sling created by Oliver C. This is my fav juniper scent. Unfortunately it doesn’t have much longevity. ?
Going to sync up with Oliver G.’s Forever for M.Carey. A lighter white floral ( described as a homeopathic white floral ) sounds nice today as the weather has been storming off and on. Also I’m going to be taking my dad to pick up his car from the dealership maintenance, I don’t want to be overwhelming in small enclosed spaces.
I recently bought Weil Greedy Essence and Suki Essence at discounters $10 each . I definitely recommend!
Late again…but it’s FriYAY so it’s ok! Home with 2 sick kiddies today… hoping it’s a 24 hour bug. Anyhoo….
Decided to go with Penhaligon’s Juniper Sling on one wrist, and a spray of Ralph Lauren Polo Red on the opposite elbow. Both Oliviers represented! Ha ha ha. If I had to pick, the Juniper Sling is the better of the two, but Polo smells good too….
Oh, no, poor kiddies, and I hope they’re better soon.
Hope everyone recovers quickly.
Sending well wishes to your children.
Thanks y’all! It’s definitely a 24 hour bug… everybody is pretty perky tonight! 🙂
No Oliviers here. I’m wearing La Curie Larrea, as I just got back from a trip to Tucson and enjoyed having the chance to smell her perfumes. It’s a nice reminder of the desert, even if it rained while I was there and wasn’t very warm! Really enjoyed Tucson, though.
Still reacting to the news in NZ today, though I saw it last night at the end of a very long day. So disheartening. Glad to see all the reports of the climate change protests, on the other hand — if my kid were older, she’d be there.
Love Larrea, you smell great 🙂
I own nothing by either Olivier, so I’m wearing Memo Tamarindo.
So sad for New Zealand.
How is Tamarindo, foxbins?
Heartfelt sympathies to you Kanuka.
Can’t really focus today, so sampling. Nomenclature Adr_Ett on one hand; pleasant if overly artificial clean musky/woody thing. Prada Infusion de Vetiver on the other hand, which is more like Infusion de Pink Pepper at the moment.
Okay, been waiting all week to wear this, feel free to sing along….
G-L-O-R-I-A! Prefer the Patti Smith( my sins are my own) or Doors version. Rock on and have a great weekend;)
????
Hi all, I’ve only got two by Oliviers, a sample of 10 Corso Como being one, but I searched out my bottle of Ange ou Demon and am wearing it today (by Cresp). I believe I bought it when it first came out but never felt that crazy about it. So that would make it pretty old and I believe it’s changed color a lot. I also never liked that bottle with a stiletto-style topper that could serve as a murder weapon. Anyway it went on just like the sort of sweet hard candy that makes your teeth ache immediately. Luckily by now it’s dried down into something less strident but is still a bit too much of a cotton-candy smell. The Demon part was always rather lacking imho. Today is indeed a sad day and I’m feeling it more because my oldest kitty, Zoe, died this morning. I knew it was coming as she was 17 and frail, mostly sleeping, and then yesterday behaved oddly and came up into my bedroom. I am glad she was near me as she was passing and I was able to put a warm blanket on her and talk to her. It was peaceful but still really sad.
So sorry for your loss. I am glad her passing was peaceful.
So sorry to hear about your Zoe kitty. It’s bittersweet to read that she sought you out at the end. Hugs.
Oh Calypso, I am so sorry! I am glad you were with her and had her cozied in a blanket and talked with her.
She is safe now over the rainbow bridge with all our other furry friends although I know the hole in your heart is big. <3
Oh no, Calypso, I am so sorry.
I am so sorry Calypso. Sending hugs.
Oh gosh, I’m so sorry.
I”m so very sorry, Calypso.
Sorry about your cat, she had a long life, but still – always hard to lose a beloved pet.
Oh Calypso I am so sorry about your kitty!
Oh, I’m so sorry, Calypso. How lucky she was to have you help guide her over the Rainbow Bridge. Sending hugs.
So sorry Kanuka, it’s hard to say goodbye, it must be a comfort that you were with her at the end, and remember she had a good life in a loving home. Big hugs.
Calypso not Kanuka my apology.
I’m sorry for your loss. I’m glad your kitty came to you for comfort in the end.
In Bvlgari Au Thé Bleu. I remember smelling this years ago and being put off by the lavender in it and lavender fragrances in general but now I love it. Calming, gentle but with presence.
I accidentally bought a huge tester of this, but now there’s every chance it will be used up one fine summer day…
Same for me. I don’t care for lavender at all, yet I love this one.
Thoughts on Brin de Reglisse? I can’t find my sample but I remember not liking it before.
I am not familiar with that perfume, maybe someone else has some thoughts?
The weather was so grey und stormy, that i first chose Musc Ravageur and then wore L’ Air de Rien in the evening. A friend got a week off in april, so we are going to London together just some days after i return from Japan. This will be some great 11weeks until my new job starts!
Wow, 11 weeks! Enjoy every second.
So sad to hear about Christchurch. Angry, too.
It’s 74 degrees F and muggy here today. Not much rain, but lillyjo’s wind sure showed up this afternoon. Temps are supposed to drop by about 25 degrees tomorrow.
SOTD = 10 Corso Como, from a decant therabbitsflfower sent. Thank you! It has a similar feel to Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt, although they don’t smell the same.
Twins! We reached 75 today. It was such a gorgeous day!
Weather & perfume twins today! Glad that you enjoyed it.
Twins with you! Sorry you got the crazy wind. There was even a tornado yesterday. Not real close, thank goodness.
Hiya scent twin! The wind here wasn’t as bad as tornadoes, thank heavens!! But I did notice that the flight paths to the Philly airport were changed due to the wind.
Yay! I wore it today too!
Whoo hoo! ?
Robin, you have today listed as “Almost-Friday” up top.
Criminy! And nobody noticed or mentioned until so late in the day, LOL…fixed now, thanks so much.
Happy to keep proofing copy if you don’t mind. ?
Please, please, please! We need an editor.
I wish it were almost Friday, then I could have tomorrow off too.
Ha! Double the fun!
In honor of perfumelover67, I’m wearing Kenzo Flower Oriental. Initially quite a nice back and forth between flowers and incense, and also reminiscent of Amour to some degree. Then, it gets all powdery, and I remember why I don’t wear it.
That sounds kind of interesting even with the powdery notes.
I can’t believe I’m just now commenting. Very busy day at work as I’m leading testing of systems and equipment at a new location on Monday so I had a lot to prepare. From what I read earlier I was part of the majority today in 10 Corso Como.
“One of us! One of us!” ?
Another twin !
After this crazy week, I went to the fridge in the garage to grab a lemonade cooler to relax and unwind a bit. I noticed my Iris 39 oil in the fridge so I put on a couple drops; that is my SOTE.
I know there are alot of people here who are struggling and overwhelmed right now (including me). Hoping for a quiet and restful weekend!
Oh, quiet and restful sound SO good right now!
A hug for you, Gail. Hope the weekend is quiet for you.
Late to the party, but had to drop a line to rave a bit about my SOTD, Tiffany and Co, courtesy of a lovely and generous NSTr from the last freebiemeet. Very lovely scent, and I wasn’t expecting it to last as long as it did, but I can still catch whiffs of it after 6-ish hours later. Very pretty, feminine, and classy, just what I would expect from one of my favorite jewelry stores (window shopping only, unfortunately, most of their stuff is way out of my reach). 🙁
I think I’m asnosmic to Tiffany, I had a real hard time smelling it. The intense version though, I can smell and really liked it.
