Thursday scent of the day 2/21

Posted by Robin on 21 February 2019 248 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Nina Simone's birthday.* (And a PSA: don't forget the splitmeet is this weekend!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm back in the tropics in Keiko Mecheri Osmanthus.

Reminder: on 2/22 we'll celebrate Margarita Day. Wear a fragrance with lime or salt or both.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

* If you don't know her, here are two of the many perfume commercials using her singing.

I got tired of roses and for a change of pace I’m wearing Gallagher Liberalis Hortus. This is a cedar forward scent, and I like it. I’m allergic to cedar pollen, but thankfully I live in an area of Texas where there is relatively little cedar. On the other hand, the area that I live in is covered in pine trees and I am now allergic to pine pollen.

I’m dreading the oak pollen here in Houston, as I can see the trees are starting to get their little pods. It’s so rampant here and so tough on so many including me! It just coats your car in yellow.

Ack! That sounds like pollen season when the Pine Barrens kick up in New Jersey. Except that pollen is a green-ish yellow. One year it was so bad even the cats were sneezing.

    Hello everyone!

I’m in Midnight Poison today. Working a long day topped by a party at night. I forget how much I liked this dark patchouli rose. I wish I’d realized it was Nina Simone’s birthday as I probably could have been a bit more festive.

In treasure hunting news I found a bottle of Bandit parfum yesterday. It was mostly empty, but I’m sure I can squeak out a few wearings! It came with almost complete packaging too, definitely from a collector. I can’t wait to take it for a spin.

That’s fair, but if my budget was, say, $100 versus $500, I wouldn’t leave anything behind. I don’t think I’ve spent more than $90 on a vintage perfume (Champagne parfum!) so I’ve got the bargain part covered. 🙂

Not quite in the tropics but definitely feeling summery in Eau d’Eté. My favourite Nicolaï Eau and one of my most worn fragrances in spring and summer. Bottle is almost empty, and I’m glad I got a large BUB, so I can spray with abandon.

I love L’Eau d’Ete! I will say, though, L’Eau Chic is my favorite of them. She makes a huge (500ml?) Splash of theEau line and I think I would honestly use it.

It´s 250 ml for the Eaux. She does the 500 ml for her Eau de colognes.
Chic is marvellous and perhaps even more original than Eté.

Forgive me, Donnatella for I have sinned. I broke down yesterday and bought that 1.7 ounce bottle of Ubar. The price was better than Lonestar Memories. I can’t figure out what to wear perfume wise today after my shower but in Shalimar Ode a la Vanille right now.

Yes, it is wonderful, but potent (unless it has been seriously weakened by reformulation). A 50 ml bottle is approximately a 1000 year supply.

I did finish up my decant of Ubar today. My mother has just told me not to get her a full bottle of Honour for her birthday, the soap and body butter is enough for her. She didn’t want me to spend that much for a full bottle. She is hard to shop for. She doesn’t really wear perfume. I can figure something else out.

Hello all! I am still in Texas for work, but mercifully done with all-day meetings. Despite Terminal Meeting Boredom I have not been able to even look at NST during the days since for reasons unknown they packed 50+ people into a room rated for 28, so there were always several someones lurking over my shoulder at all times. Figured I should look like I was paying attention to the meeting SIGH.

SOTD is Atelier des Ors Lune Feline; this week I’ve also worn Guerlain Baiser de Russie, AP Bois d’Encens, and Dior Mitzah. So not with the CP scent-wise, but I have been making sure to drink a margarita every night this week. Yum. My favorite so far was made of Lunazul tequila + Gran Marnier + pomegranate juice. Pink! and tasty!

Reeeeeeeeally looking forward to heading home tomorrow….

I have a few days off and decided to do some spring cleaning today (no its not spring yet…but I want it to be…).

This morning I wore Odalisque. Thanks to gvillecreative who wore it yesterday and reminded me of my sample

After my lunch break I decided to run some errands and to pump up the volume a little bit with three sprays of Ubar by Amouage!
I dont know it its really ‘me’ but it sure smells glorious 🙂

And now I am sorting out old junk, boxes everywhere, old hairclips and earrings and next project will be: trying to arrange my samples! I am drinking St Petersbourg Kusmi tea.

It’s here! It’s here! I received BOTH the sample of Deauville and Venise! It’s CHRISTMAS!!

Shockingly, I don’t think I like Deauville. I need to wait for the drydown but 10-15 minutes after spraying it, the basil notes are super strong on my skin. I’m shocked. I don’t think I’ve ever disliked a Chanel before.

So what’s a girl to do? Immediately break into the second sample instead of waiting. Venise is sweet but quite pretty. It reminds me of something. At the moment, Deauville is so strong that I can hardly smell Venise, but I’m looking forward to wearing just Venise tomorrow!

These aren’t nearly as wimpy as I expected. Thanks for everyone who encouraged me to seek them out. I love trying new perfumes!

Wow most of us are in the mood for Spring. Cap Neroli still smells lovely on my scarf from yesterday. I got to smell the far drydown on skin last night and it skews sweet musk on me.
SOTD: Fresh snow and cold today so I jumped back on the LDDM wagon. A micro spritz under the shirt. Tonight is tai chi class and last week I made the mistake of doing four hefty sprays of ambre Sultan under the shirt in the morning and then forgetting about it. Later in tai chi I took my sweater off and the whole thing went nuclear in a scent free zone?

I like spraying on skin and letting it try a little before putting on clothes! Scents can linger in fabric even after the wash, so I want to minimize scent in fabric. (And I don’t know if this is true, but I imagine perfume isn’t great for fabric integrity, especially for more delicate items.) Also, I think that’s the best way to smell the evolution of a scent as it warms up with your skin.

Koyel, I have the same technique. I also use as many unscented functional products as I can find (laundry detergent, soap, skincare, hair products, etc.) because I don’t want all those other smells to compete with my perfume.

On that note, if anybody knows of an unscented hair styling wax/putty/paste, I’m all ears!

I’m the same way for the same reason with unscented lotions and deodorant. Although I do really enjoy perfumed soap.

I use unscented laundry detergent, and I don’t use fabric softener at all, but I enjoy scented soaps and shower gels. I don’t find that they linger very much on my skin anyway. They smell great while I am showering, but dissipate soon afterward. Besides, I shower in the evening before bed, so there is no chance of interfering with daytime perfume.

Jo Malone Lime Basil Mandarin – I like the sharp unisex beginning, but it dries down a bit chalky.

The CP’s are working to get me to smell what’s already in my collection ?

    Yesterday I tried:

    Cabaret
    Equestrian
    Moulin Rouge
    Calligraphy Rose

Well, I shouldn’t have had Equestrian in the mix, so I’ll eliminate that one. Moulin Rouge was very interesting, but when I went to reach for more the vial fell on the floor and broke ?‍♀️ I think Calligraphy Rose wins over Cabaret, I liked the dry down better.

Robin, what about adding Frederic Malle to next week’s F perfume list? Are they too big? F is a challenging letter for brand names it seems.

I’m in Strange Invisible Perfumes Prima Ballerina, which is lime, rose, white sage, and botanical musk. It’s fresh and lovely and may have the most prominent lime note of the perfumes I’ve got.

We already did a Malle project…the idea of these letter-based CPs was to hit on brands that aren’t big enough to warrant their own separate project! But if you have no other F, of course wear Malle 🙂

SOTD is Fortune Cookie Soap’s They’re Here. It’s supposed to be a reference to the movie Poltergeist, but I’m not sure how a maple gourmand really relates. The mom in that movie is one of my favorite movie moms, maybe these are the cookies she made to celebrate everyone getting out of there alive.

Poltergeist is one of my favorite movies, and still scares me, lol.
There’s a scene where Carol Anne’s spirit passes through the mother’s body, and she keeps saying “I can smell her” maybe that’s the connection? Or maybe I think to much ?

Me too! As infuriating as my colleagues can be at times (and I’m sure it works both ways!), I do prefer the office environment.

I had an interesting email this morning, however, a client/partner who works virtually emailed me he’s in the city today and would it be OK if he used our cafeteria to do some work, like a wework space. What?! Weird. Definitely not a precedent we want to set but with so many businesses not having office space and with the wework model I guess folks are getting bold in trying to use any old space.

Tonight my husband and I are off to a cooking class–I purchased ticket for us for his birthday almost two years ago, but we have never been able to make it to any of the options. So it is “Winter in Lyon” for us this evening, because we had nothing else scheduled. Not too shabby, and by then I should smell presentable.

Chinchilla for a rare sunny day. No lime anywhere around here. ?

Got a perfume compliment the other day at the Post Office about Equestrian. The postal worker fell in love with this perfume and asked me not only the name, but the perfume house and where I got it. I told her the company was no longer in business, but she was quite determined that she was going to track it down. I wished her good luck!

Well, this is Oregon. People here are mainly super nice and helpful.

I think it’s interesting that here, I can receive General Delivery mail without any issue whatsoever. No fees and no time limits. But in California, both Napa and San Jose told me I had to pay for that service, and then it was only available for a month. Then I had to buy a POBox for a minimum of 6 months. I though USPS was a federal business, but it seems certain states can do whatever they want…

I then forgot to put on perfume (Mr Cancer Cat was being particularly snuggly, so I had to spend some time with him, OBVIOUSLY), but I did put on some Halfeti at work. So I get no CP points, but I do smell fabulous. I wish Penhaligon’s made travel sprays.

I am not a Nina Simone fan at all. I know that puts me in a vanishing minority, but that voice…yech. Oh well; she has plenty of other fans to keep her estate warm.

I am in my sample of A Ce Soir by Pont des Arts again – and I like it just as much as I did yesterday. In fact, I was in a very cheery mood yesterday (this is sadly unusual for me this time in the semester/winter) and the only thing I could attribute to is the perfume.

I would like to do more reading and research about the links between aromas and mood, i.e. the field of aromatherapy. I always associated that with essential oils, but I wonder if perfume too works?

    Hello!

    1) Icy cold morning with icy roads- slippery and sliding in this am!

    2) Am trying out Lilylang from the Delacourte Musc Sampler. Again, light, powdery white musk, but with a delicate musc/jasmine/ylang ylang scent. It’s very pretty and classy; this would be perfect for a warm summer day- but right now it is sitting close to my skin and sweater.
This reminds me a bit of one the BeautyPie scents- petals heliotrope and ambrette scent, specifically- delicate, warm pretty – more suited for warm weather.

Friday here -yay! It has been a busy week. This week’s CP isn’t for me, I don’t like salty notes and I have very little citrus. I do have the Alien limited edition with mandarin notes, which seems appealing for late summer. It’s a dull day today, damp, but not cold.

Hi all, my SOTD is a new purchase, Rrose EDP by Ellis Brooklyn. I impulse bought, which I shouldn’t have. I love the initial green/rose/cassis opening but the dry down with cashmere musk and vanilla veer quite sweet. I’m glad I purchased a travel size.
But add $30 to my expenditure for Q1!

My SOTD is Areej le Dore Flux de Fleur from the sample 4-pack I bought recently. I’d more or less forgotten about them (lots going on here) and am glad I re-tried it. It goes on strong and heavy and has a slight bitter-acid note at first that put me off, but that’s disappeared by now (two hours later) and it’s become a very intriguing scent, without as much sillage as I feared. (Some of his other ones are killers in that regard.) It’s supposed to smell of a lot of florals and frankincense and some reviews criticise it as too sweet. I’m not getting the florals much but it has a rather gourmand-ish buttery oud-balsam-amber tone to it that I like very much. If others have tried it I’d like to hear what you thought. It’s moving up in my list of several of his I’d love to buy (or at least get a larger decant of).

Doing salt and not lime. AG Musc Nomade which does have a salty vibe going on. Reminds me of the smell of a child’s skin at the beach after one has washed off the sunscreen in the surf. A trace of the cream, salt water and child sweat. Nice!

It turns out that my father has a pelvic fracture in addition to the fracture to his humerus. Neither one is operable, and the head injury is not getting any worse, so no surgery is in the picture. They hope to move him from the ICU to a regular room tomorrow depending on how he is doing. I am concerned as to how mobile he will be with the pelvic fracture. The assisted living facility where he was living required the residents to be ambulatory, although the definition of ambulatory only requires them to be able to stand up, turn, and take a step or two, and sit down. They can use walkers and wheelchairs, and It is OK if then need some assistance, but they cannot need to be lifted in or out of bed or the wheelchair. I am hoping that if he is not at that point when they discharge him, that he can go to a rehab facility until he regains enough mobility to qualify. I am also hoping that the social worker assigned to his case will be more helpful than the one at the local hospital a while back after he had a hip replacement (also the result of a fall). The “help” she provided consisted of handing me a single printed sheet with a list of rehab facilities-names, addresses, and phone numbers-and informing me that I had 24 hours to choose a facility to move him to. Fortunately, a couple of hours later they called me to tell me that the rehab center in the hospital, which had supposedly been full, suddenly had available beds and could take him. If he does have to go into a skilled nursing facility, I don’t want to have to make a snap decision with no information and no guidance.

Why does it seem that when you are waiting to hear news about a family member, that’s when every telemarketing pest calls you? Every time the phone rings, I look at it anxiously expecting it to be the hospital or a family member, and instead it is a telemarketer.

He doesn’t seem to be “scheduled” for anything in particular. All I have been told is “several days”, and that he would not be discharged by this weekend. Other than that, I don’t know if “several days” means 3 days or a week or what. He may or may not get transferred out of the ICU tomorrow. I will need to find out something before I drive up there tomorrow so I know where to go and whom to talk to. The hospital is a 1+ hour drive from my house, and seemingly half the roads in Houston are under construction right now.
Everything is torn up and I have to go through construction debris, delays, lane closures, road closures, detours, and general chaos to get there. I know that it is good for him to be in a really good hospital in a world class medical center, but it is quite an undertaking just to get there.

Sorry to hear his fractures were more extensive than originally thought.

With regards to discharge (because I am familiar with and work closely with aggressive discharge planners), how aggressive they are depends on the facility somewhat, how many open beds they have etc. But, it’s pretty common to pressure people out everywhere nowadays, because insurance will stop paying if there’s no active treatment happening. But, you can put the breaks on that if that happens. You do have the right to go visit potential facilities in a timely manner. They can give you a 24 hour d/c notice but you can appeal, which will give you another day or 2 to make a decision while the appeal is decided by an outside reviewer. Anyway, feel free to hit me up if you need any suggestions (pretsky 35 over at hot mail).

It’s been a cool but very sunny day here. The cats took full advantage of it this afternoon, hanging out in the bay window to soak up the sun. ???? Yesterday’s snow has vanished like a cold wet mirage.

No real perfume today, I’m just not up to it. Earlier today I had on some Ancient Resins body oil. Just now, after another shower, I tried out the La Curie Saint oil that just arrived this afternoon. It is quite clove-heavy. I was hoping that the other notes (labdanum, oakmoss, and ambrette) would be a little more apparent. Nevertheless, I expect to use it up. I may try layering with another scented oil.

    SOTD = FM Iris Poudre

…because mals wore it yesterday and it comes in an eye-searing red packaging.

R.I.P. my avatar doggie “H”. My brother posted a really nice picture of him on insta. Something happened to the Blenheim as well but my brother has not said anything. Anyway, there is one left, the oldest, hopefully they’ll have a few more good years. Cavalier King Charles spaniels usually live between 9 and 14 years. They’ve all exceeded the 9 years.

I’ll be picking another avatar…just don’t know of what yet – maybe a Chanel No.19 EDP bottle!
