Monday scent of the day 1/28

Posted by Robin on 28 January 2019 253 Comments

Happy Monday! It's also Data Privacy Day and Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, and Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette's birthday. (PSA: the freebiemeet is still open.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing cherry cough syrup in Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto.

Reminder: on 2/1, we'll celebrate Cherry Month...wear a fragrance with a cherry or cherry blossom note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

This community definitely appreciates its bubble wrap. I got a decant of Bendelirious in the recent STC sale so that’s my SOTD. The cherry is pretty subtle IMO.

I’m wearing Jo Malone French Lime Blossom from a sample. It definitely reinforces my dislike of Linden notes.

I’m with you on that. I’ve been in places with linden trees in bloom, and while the smell is pretty, a little goes a long way. And in perfume, well, just no.

        MEEE TOOOO.

        Real-life linden = swoon.

Perfumery linden = powdered toilet cleanser. I get intensely disappointed every. Stupid. Time.

I’m literally lol-ing right now, because linden scents always remind of the bathroom cleaner my grandma used to use. I thought I was the only one!

I wonder why it is so difficult to capture the light, lemon honey note that lifts linden in real life. Linden perfumes can be a bit stodgy in that respect but I still like them. Roger et Gallet linden soap is probably my best true to life linden. But i like wearing the JM Linden which I layer with something citrus or with ylang ylang / pepper to give it a lightness, lift.

Wearing Dusita Splendiris. A very pretty perfume. It is more violet than iris on my with a nice vanilla and ambergris drydown. After 2 hours it wears close to the skin. Maybe it needs more sprays to last longer. I can still smell it from my sweater. I am enjoying it greatly!

Wearing TWO spritzes of Iris Prima, which is a lot more than I typically wear of any frag. I loooove this perfume.

Working from home today, so burning Illume Woodfire candle. This *must* be the best fireside-smelling candle of all time. Just lovely. Bought a 12oz candle for just $14 with free shipping before Christmas, but it’s not available anywhere right now? Is it seasonal? Anyone know?

Found it on Amazon for $30– which is more than twice what I paid before Xmas, but worth it in my book. It’s definitely on of my top 3 candles of all time and perfect in the winter.

For candle snobs, this is a really, really great deal. This is definitely one of the strongest candles in my collection.

They do have a lot of DW Home candles at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s, but honestly I’ve liked some of them better than nicer brands. I really like their Warm Tobacco Pipe and Wild Nectar Honey especially.

Hitting the nail on the head today with Bvlgari’s Amarena–cherry, rose, and powder. Definitely one of my sweeter perfumes, but I was in the mood.

Wearing the last bit of my decant of Mitsouko. For some reason I was determined to love Mitsouko and make it my go-to classic, but in the end I only like it and probably won’t buy more. It did inspire an ongoing love of peach notes though!

Off to Glasgow tomorrow for a few days of culture, shopping & sightseeing, the latter specifically to include the 3 large murals by well known Scottish artists of Billy Connolly to mark his 75th birthday & also the newly installed statue of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (I’m a huge fan of the late 1800s Arts & Crafts Movement). Looking forward to wearing perfume again, as I haven’t been out much lately! I will of course pop into Frasers department store to see what’s new in their fragrance department since I was there last year.

Robin, you asked me report back when I’d worn Floral Street’s Ylang Ylang Espresso – used it prior to a much red wine consumed evening on Saturday with my best friend – she absolutely loved it, but I’ll have to give it another try before making up my mind – it is certainly very different to anything else I have ever smelled or worn, & thankfully I don’t get any of the ‘dirty ashtray’ smell that quite a few people have posted about elsewhere & which gave me pause for thought before applying!

Like Robin, I’m in a LPRN flanker. It’s the Ma Robe Hippie-Chic EDP Legere version from a single use sample. Boy, those Guerlain single use samples leave a lot to be desired. It’s a silly little contraption where you pull a tab up at the top to expose the little nozzle, then press the center of the sample to squirt out some juice. All it takes is a little too much of a squeeze to make almost all the perfume come out in one squirt. I got one large squirt to my left arm, a smaller one to my neck, and none left for my right arm. It was a 0.3ml sample, so I was expecting enough for a full wearing. Oh well, my left arm smells quite strong so I probably didn’t need any more.

It smells…fine? It’s almost gone already but it was basically a raspy, sweet cherry with indiscriminate fruity floral notes. I’m not really getting the rose water that they claim is in it. Maybe if I’d been able to use more than 2.5 sprays?

Hi all, I’m in the last of my sample of Ginger Biscuit today, in honor of your (largely gingery) anti-nausea suggestions for my father yesterday.

You all are great. Thank you all.

I smell great. Fremont, CA does not smell great. The toxic mixture of garbage and wetlands outdoors is a non-negligible factor in my not-infrequent job dissatisfaction. I mean, I have to get from my car to my building, and walk between buildings. No amount of Ginger Biscuit will keep that stench at bay.

    Cristalle eau Verte today

I made a latte at home and staying warm in a ivory cashmere sweater.

I saw Vice over the weekend. Interesting film.
We also watched Beautiful Boy, and I read the book some 10 years ago. The book was better, but the movie didn’t disappoint either.

I read Warlight in 3 days, I couldn’t put it down. Robin also read it so maybe she can chime in too…
I think (and hope) it will be worth your wait.

I like the original Cristalle best, what about you?

Eau Verte is more refreshing and fleeting

Just requested Warlight from the library. There’s a bit of a wait but I have plenty others that will come up soon. Last night I started The Alice Network (I can’t turn down WWII historical fiction). So far it’s okay…it may be a bit fluffy but I don’t mind a little brain candy every once in a while.

wearing a dab of Aromatics Elixer on my left hand – I only have > 1/2 ml left, so I’m happy more is on it’s way from the freebie meet! layered it with PW tea rose, this layering combo mentioned many times here and there, the combo smells like walking into an crabtree & Evelyn store, in the 80’s maybe

on my right hand just a dot of the mystery attar a friend brought back from her travels – smells like a civet forward glamourous 40’s perfume to my imagination. If I want more, I might look to DSH mink stole.

    Hi all!

    1) Am in Fresh Cream Warm Suede. Despite the name, this is more of a vanilla and white musk affair. It’s an eau de toilette, so this wears light- BUT VERY LIGHT- almost fleeting. I had to spray several times on skin and on clothing for any persistance in scent- as opposed to Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere, which has a soft but persistent sillage. If you like Iso Super E, you will like this, but will wish it was a deeper concentration.

    2) I saw a scratch and dent refrigerator at IKEA for $675- a Nutid french door in Stainless Steel and am wondering if I should buy it ( i had planned on redoing my kitchen for my big 4-0),

    SotD is Satori

I saw Patti Smith live yesterday evening and I had a blast.
To be honest, I only know her early work (Horses, Wave, Easter) so I am not her biggest fan, but geee…..she is amazing.
72 years old, maybe not as edgy and ‘radical’ as she used to be….but her voice is still so powerful, and she seems funny, sweet and smart.

Played some good covers as well….beds are burning, after the gold rush….

Sweet (for both perfume and Patti Smith)! I have yet to see her perform live, but I met her in person when I went to see her documentary, “Dream of Life”. It was the last day screening and there were only about <20 people in the theater, including her. We got to chat in the lobby afterwards and she was pretty "normal" and unassuming.

I took a couple of vacation days this week in anticipation of the crap weather. So I only work Wednesday and Thursday. Kids have a snow day. This weather has me very anxious. Especially this polar vortex thing. If anyone from places used to this type of super below freezing wants to alleviate my fears, feel free. I’m wearing Russian Tea from a sample. I like this a lot, it’s more tobacco than tea on me. Plus, since it’s a sample, I won’t have enough of it to turn it into a bad association with the weather.

One more thing. Don’t over indulge on radio/tv weather updates as they can be quite stressful if you don’t like storms. There’s nothing wrong with creating your own quiet space even if it means closing the curtains and lighting scented candles and watching old movies (literally). Often the ‘storm warnings’ are worse than the actual event….unless you’re in a tent up a mountain

I can’t tell you how many -30 days/weeks I have spent in northern Saskatchewan and Quebec. As long as you are not spending a lot of time outside, don’t worry. Make sure you have wood for the fireplace and/or a reliable source of gas, usually bad storms just knock out electricity. Have enough food and water so you don’t have to go to the store and avoid alarmist news reports.

I walked to and from work in -30 many times. You got this! 🙂

Some things I remember from frigid climes: 1) Stay inside if possible. 2) Drape a blanket over drafty windows and doors if needed. Or tape some clear plastic around windows. 3) If you have to go outside, layer, layer, and layer! And avoid cotton clothes. They won’t keep you warm. 4) Keep the doors under all the sinks (bathroom and kitchen) open at night.

I’ve been in temps around -40 C/F. Yes, it’s the same temperature on both scales. Definitely unpleasant, but if you are prepared for it, you’ll do fine.

It did, but I think I will need to gently dab in the future – a full spritz is a little too much for me first thing, particularly when I find myself in down dog…..

I’m an MT too! Burning question– do you wear perfume at work? I used to be strictly no fragrance, but then I realized that we use so many essential oils at my studio that a very conservative application probably didn’t make a difference. Plus I have plenty of coworkers who wear their own blends or perfume oils.

I try to not wear scent when I’m working for a variety of reasons. The person on the table might have an aversion to the scent or be allergic/chemical sensitive. Also it may be misinterpreted as a sensual overture. That being said, I do sometimes wear a tiny dab of Mysore sandalwood oil. And if the clients that day are regulars who I know are ok with it I will do a dab of ambre sultan.

It’s so funny to watch. I’m wearing the ever-cheerful Moon Bloom. I transferred mine from the bulb atomizer it came in to a regular one and now one spray is enough to anoint 3 spots. I’m afraid I’m reeking quite a bit.

SOTD = Rania J Ambre Loup

I smell terrific, if I may say so myself ?. No cherry in the notes, nor tobacco; however, it smells to me of cherry pipe tobacco so that counts, right? Right?

In other news, a Target run yesterday resulted in a purchase of eight 10oz bags of Peanut Butter M&Ms. How could I not? 2 for $5 and then it’s also $5 off a $20 purchase of Valentine’s candy which is even better than a $5 gift card. The former is essentiall 25% off (5/20) while the latter is 20% off (5/25) since you actually have to purchase $5 of something else with the gift card.

Peanut butter M&M’s…. I tried those for first time a few months ago, they are great!

Its not a very common flavour in The Netherlands, but there is a shop in town that sells those tiny packages (like 40 grams) of special/import flavours. The pretzel was pretty good as well. Still need to try the caramel. Oh and I hate AND love the fact those bags are dwarf sized. Haha.

Today is Czech & Speake “No. 88” (and hello from the Málaga-Amsterdam flight, which is just boarding).

Someone was asking about Czech & Speake a few weeks ago. My No. 88 from 6 years ago is a pale shadow of the 1990s version I first wore. “Cuba”, on the other hand, is good, although I got it maybe 4 or 5 years ago. “Old Rose” (? Dark Rose?) and “Frankincense & Myrrh” didn’t live up to my memories when I smelled them at the same time I got No. 88.

Perfume near misses last week: went to treat myself with a FB of Amouage “Interlude Man” in Selfridges in Birmingham and they were out of it. Tried to get Tom Ford “Tobacco Vanille” in Duty Free and they only had 100ml bottles. I haven’t bought anything all year and can wait longer if I must!

I have a decant of Dark Rose. It is labeled as “EdC”. Does that mean it is the older version? I know it was discontinued for a time, then reintroduced, and it looks as if the currently available version is labeled as EdP. In any case, I do like it.

No cherry perfumes, I might have to remedy that.

I’m working through my STC order. Have violaceum 2 on one arm and goutal la violette on the other. Violaceum is more cosmetic powder violet while la violette reminds me of fresh flowers.

    Supercool CP this week!
I have way too many cherry perfumes in my collection.Of course Bendelirious is in my Top 2 favorite fumes of all time.
Today however I was in lashings of Mac Ruby Woo.So much fun,and I love the lipsticky-vibe from it,like smelling a fresh lippie when you first open it(I’m guessing here since I don’t wear lipstick, actually, being a boy and all…haha!)
Too many options for Friday, but looking forward to deciding which one!
Bendelirious,Aromatics Black Cherry,or Cafè Chantant are the forerunners.
    Happy Week all!

No cherries for me too. Sprayed from a sample of Mecheri´s Soussanne, but that was too much of a lily scent, although it dries down to a nice creamy woody scent.
Then i got a decant of Chypre Mousse in the mail. I smell like a wet swamp. Hopefully i will not dream of the Thing from the lagoon or other horror films.
Made some sweet potato and brussel sprouts curry in coco milk for dinner, sprinkled with pomegranate seeds because i saw this on a foodblog some days ago. Very nice and easy to make too.

I’m wearing CBIHP’s To See a Flower. I *was* going to do a DSH week (month?) since I have grouped all of my samples, decants and bottles from her together. I think. Plus I have Eau Cerise for Friday. But…squirrel! I bumped into my CBIHP samples that are also all grouped together, and this one called my name today. I’m thinking of buying a bottle from Twisted Lily with my 20% discount code for a project I’m doing with nursing homes and hospice, but it’s the water perfume version and I’ve only tried the absolute which has excellent sillage and longevity for me. Has anyone tried his water perfumes?

CBIHP’s In The Library water perfume is an all-time favourite of mine. I personally get 12+ hours from it, but, in all honesty, I tend to get great longevity from most scents in any concentration.
I made a decant for a friend, and she reported great longevity on her skin also.

SOTD is Alien eau Extraordinaire. I probably would not have chosen it if I had looked out the window and saw the snow first, but I wanted something sparkly for a day of errands. This is one of my favorite Mugler flankers, it feels very peaceful to me.

It’s definitely related, but like Alien’s much calmer, zen cousin. It’s a good version for summer or when you just don’t want to deal with Alien’s fuss. It swaps the jasmine for taire/neroli and has a tea note that I really love. Longevity isn’t as good as the original but for a summer flanker that doesn’t bother me.

Another snow day for madtownteen today. I think they kind of overpredicted this storm for us and she could have easily made it to school but alas, they do not pay me to make these decisions. What worries me more than snow are the arctic temps coming for the next 3 days. I predict more days home. I had today off work too so of course that meant more baking. Banana bread with dark chocolate chips is in the oven now. ?
SotD was Narciso edt. That has faded so maybe I’ll top it off with White Cube for the evening.

I don’t think I have any cherry or cherry blossom scents in my collection, as far as I know, and I don’t feel like looking up the notes for all 100+ fragrances that I own, so I am not participating in the CP this week. Instead, I am continuing my sample evaluation project by wearing scents from neglected bottles. Today was DelRae Coup de Foudre. Today it seemed a little too sharp and sour, but I thought it would be office friendly, since I had a 3 1/2 hour meeting today. I have to say it does have good longevity. I can still smell it now, 11 hours after spraying it on. Very few perfumes last as long as that on my skin.
