Wednesday scent of the day 1/23

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2019 279 Comments

Hump Day and Pie Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm ignoring the weather in Tauer L'Eau.

Reminder: on 1/25, wear one of your favorite fragrances of this winter (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your favorite scents of this summer).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Terracotta by Guerlain this morning
I guess I love white florals when its freezing out

Made a latte at home this morning and catching up on the WSJ and New Yorker while the 2 kiddos are at school this morning.

Listening to Queen (ever since I saw the movie I can’t stop)

I did not even see the movie yet, and I never cared for Queen, but even I am listening to Queen more since my son saw it and made me watch some bits on YouTube.

      Enjoy your free morning!

Me neither! I liked them but wouldn’t be my first choice to listen to.
I liked some songs from the movie..but now I am addicted to all of them

I got a little obsessed as well after seen the movie! Watched videos on utube and downloaded samples of a few of Freddie Mercury biographies. Need to decide which one I want to pay for now.

Me too! A Night at the Opera was the second album I bought when it was released… I was 14! I would say to the many feline lovers here on NST – go see the movie for the cats! So funny!

Same here. I wasn’t a big Queen person, but I think I never paid attention. I liked a lot of the music in the movie, so I keep thinking “where was I?”

Today I’m in Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret, dabbed from my dwindling sample. After absorbing Undina’s step-back-from-the-edge advice over the weekend about choosing between Rien and Feu Secret, I “compromised” and ordered the Bruno discovery set, which also contains Lampblack and Ummagumma, two more scents I’ve been wanting to try. I confess I also ordered the travel size of Memo Italian Leather. So sue me.

Anyway, even though I merely dabbed Feu Secret, Mr. G announced that I was “wearing a lot of it”. Hopefully my coworkers won’t be gassed out. Have others of you found that Bruno’s scents should be applied rather sparingly?

The only one that’s potent on me is Ummagumma. But I don’t have Lampblack.

      So sue me???!
I love Au DeLa – both regular and Narcisse have fb homes here, but I didn’t have a great reaction to Lampblack and want to give it another go as I know it’s a fav of Robin’s. I can’t wait to try Feu Secret, Umma and Five!
      Please report back!

House made discovery sets and travel sizes are wonderful. It still feels more glamorous somehow than a large sample or small decant. I think you made a great decision. The thing is to think it through first and then enjoy whatever you decide!

I don’t find his scents to be sillage monsters. Maybe for the 1st hour they’re more noticeable but I find they retreat fairly quickly- at least the ones I’ve worn or own.
Hope you enjoy the discovery set! I’m also a Lamblack fan, but a non-perfumista sniffed me and told me she didn’t like what I was wearing, so apparently it’s not a universal like.

Sounds like a reasonable compromise ;)

I tried Feu Secret from a spray sample but it didn’t strike me as an especially potent perfume. I’ll try again. Any chance Mr.G suffers from allergies? My vSO does, and on those rare occasions when his nose clears completely, everything around starts smelling strong and strange, including my perfumes.

Feu Secret isn’t strong on me either. I’d say average when initially sprayed and then fading to skin scent.

I have the discovery set, and I didn’t find them to be sillage monsters. Of course everyone’s skin is different. Maybe you have skin that amplifies a scent? If so, rejoice, because there is nothing worse than hopefully applying a new fragrance and having it disappear within the hour.

Many thanks to everyone who chimed in! I don’t normally have scent-amplifying skin and Mr. G doesn’t have allergies, but he is sometimes more sensitive to fragrances than other times and I guess this morning was one of those random times. It’s lunchtime here now, nobody at work has complained (or even commented), and I can barely detect Feu Secret on my wrists. So far so good!

Hey, my house in PA, like most very old houses, is likewise poorly insulated!

But I do remember having people come to visit me in January in SoCal and not bring warm clothing because they assumed it would be tropical weather. Ha!

We visited my in-laws in Colorado once in February and I was burning up. I had brought warm clothing assuming it would be chilly (which it was). I hadn’t counted on them having the heat turned up so high . It must have been 80 in the guest room.

Testing something called Love Diane by Diane Von Furstenberg that came with some samples I ordered. Meh fruit puff that seems to have picked up some vague ammoniated note.

Fortunately I applied it sparingly. Stephen Jones should blow this supercilious scent to kingdom come!

Hmm, this is a different pie day than the one I’m used to. No matter; pie is great on any day.

Wearing Spicebomb today from a Sephora sample, and it’s actually really nice. Marketed for men indeed. I don’t think I’ll buy it, but if a bottle fell into my lap, it would certainly get some good wear. I do think the grenade bottle shape looks silly, and I’m annoyed that the company’s name has no spaces in it (it appears to be Victor&Rolf, all one word), but the scent is spicy and leathery with something sweet and fruity underneath.

Inorite? I even went through a few moments of “Well, is it a European thing?…No, that’s 22 July. Is it perhaps 2pi?…No, that’s 28 June. Hrm.” 0.5pi? Even that should be either the 57th of January, or perhaps 0.57*31 = 18 Jan. Anyway, I find no logic to get us to 23 Jan.

I’m in Rosabotanica again, not discouraged from my thunking mission yet. What is discouraging are those Oscar nominations – anyone else following that? Very strange extremes this year, foreign films made a great showing, but so did a couple movies that seemingly time traveled here from the 90s.

Ooh, we watched BKKK just the other night. My youngest, who is on the spectrum, found it unbearable to watch in places as he just took in the language and ignorance unfiltered by the consciousness of the movie and the audience, etc. Hannah Arendt got it right when she described the banality of evil. It ever was and it ever will be. I’m rooting for the movie too.

SOTD MMM Replica Dancing on the Moon. Another sample finished! I am definitely “not dancing on the moon” with this perfume, like yesterday with Lipstick On. It is a pleasant white floral, but not my cup of tea. Sometimes I have problems with ambergris and here is very prominent and annoying. Glad it didn’t make it to my “fb purchase list”

I tried it, and didn’t care for it either. It was just odd, and a little sharp, or something. Now I’m anxious to smell ambergris at Mandy’s when I get out there to Berkeley. I’m counting the days!

Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath, the recreation of the legendary Iris Gris. Is now available on their website:

    https://www.jacques-fath-parfums.com/en/l-iris-de-fath/

I’m not sure about stores, but it was slated for Harrods London and I think Jovoy Paris.

Per Luca Turin, it’s not exactly like either the Osmotheque version (Vincent Roubert’s ideal formula) or the original (no actual iris!). He noted that, like many 1950s fragrances, the original smells almost dowdy today. (I always felt it needed to be worn with a tailored day suit, hat, and gloves.) He felt the new Iris strikes the perfect balance between old and new.

Guerlain’s Encens Mythique today, and wondering if anyone has encountered the new ones in the wild (in the bee bottle rather than the flat clear-and-gold). I’d love to know if it’s the same, or if there have been noticeable changes, because it’s a lot more juice for a lot less money. This seems to buck most trends in perfume, so, I’m hopeful but dubious.

Amouage Dia – the decants I bought arrived with lightning speed from the East Coast and I had to interrupt my sample thunking for this one. I”m not sure if it’s a favorite winter fragrance, but it’s definitely just a favorite fragrance overall (for right now, at any rate. I’m fickle)! I’m going to compare it with Climat, to see how similar they are (if at all), and report back.

In my opinion, Dia resembles Climat much less than its older sister Gold. If you’re curious, you can read about the blind test I ran several years ago with 3 other perfume bloggers https://undina.com/2012/03/05/deja-vu-e2-huge-floral-vs-abstract-floral/

thanks for the link – just read this while eating lunch! The person I bought the decants from also had a decant of Gold that I decided not to buy based on the Turin review saying it was “huge” and I thought it would be too opulent. But I don’t find Climat opulent at all. Hmmm..maybe I’ll test Gold one day. Or perhaps there’s no need, since I own Climat and it’s way more affordable!

Oh, this is great — sorry I missed it the first time around! I still have some Amouage Gold — used up all my Climat — so I will dig that out and wear it soon. I would love to have more Climat, but worry that there are many fakes out there, especially on e-bay.

Wearing a perfume I should have worn last week, Fat Electrician. I’m smelling so good!

Today at work we have a professional photographer coming in to take new headshots. We use our pictures for both our badge photos and an online photo directory of all the employees by department. I hadn’t decided whether or not to retake mine because I like the old one. But I happen to look nice today in a plain black shirt and dark red lips AND having a good hair day, so I signed up after all. I just have to keep looking nice for four and a half hours when it’s my turn. Wish me luck! ?

Hi lillyjo, we ran out of space below, so here’s the link to the cake I made. It’s chocolate, with a warm icing poured over a warm cake. The icing sets up a bit when it cools, which is the whole point for me….you kinda get cake and candy.
It’s a common cake in Texas, and probably elsewhere in the south. If you’d like a recipe that makes a larger cake, like a 9×13, let me know; I’ll research it for you. This one is quite small, uses a 6” round pan.

It’s my vSO’s favorite, and I like it too but whenever we’re buying something for guests (or to take it to someone’s place) and I suggest to get this one, he always says that he’s the only one who likes it and nobody else does. And since I prefer not to argue about such small things, we usually end up buying something else – so I can’t confirm or disprove that his idea :)

I’ve heard people say they don’t like lemon desserts, so maybe? It does have to be a good one for me, though. I’ve had lemon meringue pie at diners that were subpar, where the lemon filling is that artificial-tasting canned slime.

It’s extra cold in southern AZ this morning and, like Robin, I’m also ignoring the weather in En Passant. I think I might like it better in cold weather than warm? Go figure.

I agree, it felt so almondy/mimosa perfect, and it’s been discontinued, I think. Don’t hesitate to grab a bottle when you see one, it’s still affordable but prices will rise.

Commando today so far. Vet visit for the old girl, who continues to lose weight. Disheartening. I think time is short. She did get some fluids and a B vitamin shot. Got some prescription food and new syringes. I syringed her and put her down, and she made a beeline for the extra food in the dish. Gobbled it like crazy. We just want to have her a little longer, but want to ensure she’s comfortable. My sister and her husband said goodbye yesterday to their elderly dog…she was 16!

I had to laugh about another place where a sweet man was looking for a fragrance recommendation for his mom, who is 60. Why does her age matter?? Heck, I wear Twilly, which is explicitly marketed to young women. Sigh.

This is my second day with my sample of Rose Nacree du Desert van Guerlain. I couldn’t find my jojoba oil, so used fractionated coconut oil on my skin before applying the fragrance. This time, it lasted many hours (forgot to check the time). It’s still listed at the main Guerlain site, so I think it hasn’t been discontinued. I have to see if my budget can stretch for it next month. I’ve just ordered a bottle of Jean Patou’s 1000 after falling in love with a sample. It’s not something I would have considered wearing a year ago. My tastes must be changing. It has a fabulous vintage vibe. (And if anyone wants to look up the original ad copy from the ad that was banned, it’s funny!)

I want to add that the Jean Patou 1000 I ordered is the edt. I would have loved to order the perfume, which Luca Turin convinces me I should have (lol), but it’s € 300 for 15 ml. Sigh.

I got my sample pack from St. Clair yesterday (quite speedy) and have to chime into the chorus singing the praises of “Casablanca.” It’s really an especially beautiful scent, and somehow so “round” and 3D and realistic… I am getting mostly orange blossom and jasmine, and not so much of the tuberose that others mentioned; and I don’t pick up on many of the underlying “dark” aspects (as in Kafkaesque’s review, which is a rave), such as patchouli, but can definitely smell the oak moss and labdanum. I would like to be able to spray it to see what that’s like, what aspects it amplifies. This stuff is quite potent. I dabbed a lot on and feel I’m wafting a rather thick cloud, but a pretty one. It sits right at the edge of being cloying, but it isn’t. I don’t know if I could yet call it a winter favourite, but it’s a candidate, which makes sense given the story behind its creation. So, thanks to Jessica and her review for prompting me to buy this sample pack!

    Top: bergamot & clary sage;
    Mid: iris;
