Tuesday scent of the day 1/15

Posted by Robin on 15 January 2019 322 Comments

Tuesday, and Martin Luther King's birthday (although Martin Luther King Day is next Monday). If it's winter where you are, there are 64 days left until spring. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Escentric Molecules Molecule 03. Tea at the moment is a random Ceylon sample from Upton.

Reminder: on 1/18, wear a fragrance by Eau d'Italie, Etat Libre d'Orange, Escentric Molecules or Etro, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter E.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the two spout "Samourai" Chinese cast iron 1 liter teapot is €135 at Dammann Frères.

At the moment, I’m sporting the drydown from Neela Vermeire: Mohur Extrait. Its mostly medicinal gentle oud and powder at this point of time.

I’m really liking coffee scents nowadays. I am planning to spritz myself with Areej le Dore’s Oud Luwak in a couple of hours :)

I don’t have any perfumes from “E” houses, having rehomed my bottle of Messe de Minuit. I am on Shiseido Zen ( original “black”) today because it smells warm and cozy to me.

Molecule 03 is an excellent vetiver perfume. You smell good, Robin.

SOTD is Etat Libre d’Orange Une Amourette Roland Mouret (sample thunk). I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it smells nice (woods, iris, neroli). On the other hand, I feel like it’s incomplete or an experiment, not a finished work.

ON a spur of the moment decision I bought the new Nicolai Fig and Tea scent. Those smaller 30ml bottles make it seem less extravagant. I like the orange top notes. Have not gotten much of the middle notes yet. Very work acceptable I believe.

That was my gateway Nicolai – I remember sampling it at a store (ZGO perfumery in SF) and loving it. Got myself a sample but couldn’t handle the calones in it – all aquatic notes make me queasy. Having said that, I feel I need to revisit this one!

Hey there—we ran out of commenting space above so I thought I’d tell you about my comfortable, gorgeous shoes here. I got two pairs of the lovely Shape 45 Pointy Sleek pumps from ECCO, the Marlee skimmer flat from Cole Haan, and the Zerogrand Oxford with Stitchlite Wool, which is super duper light.

I’m joining BobH in Jas & Cig. It reminds me (in a good way) of that youthful time when cigarettes seemed cool; I feel like every high school in the 90s had a cool goth girl who smelled like this.

Looking for herbal tea recommendations! A coworker just gave me her electric kettle and I am anticipating a new era of tea drinking, but I can’t really do caffeine. I like floral teas and tangy teas.

My perfume no-buys always morph into excessive purchases in other realms. A few months ago, it was shoes (four pairs of gorgeous but comfortable shoes). Before that, it was body products (oils and soaps and such). I am on a permanent tea moratorium, because of some tea-buying sprees before I started having a real income (tea is usually much cheaper than perfume). Anyway, I hope you enjoy your tea spree :)

Not sure. There’s two labels on the bag:

A small one on the top that says “Enigman Leaf Assam”

A larger one on the bottom of bag that says “Darjeeling tea”

            15 January 2019 at 2:50 pm

What does the tea look like? Darjeelings are not as dark brown, in fact good quality first flushes are more dark green than anything else.

It’s frighteningly easy to get stuck in the ice and then take two (or more!) hours thinking it should be fairly easy to get unstuck, trying several things, getting stuck even worse but thinking that it Can’t Be This Difficult … happened to me a few winters ago. Thank heaven a lovely, kind soul who had grown up in Canada just happened to see me, stuck in ice on a side street, after dark, with very poor street lighting, and knew just exactly what to do to get me unstuck and on my way.

    SotD = Eau de Guerlain

Eau starts with E, right? lol :D

It’s rainy again today, woo-hoo, fill those reservoirs, mother nature.

I’m on a cologne kick, I do this every winter. Victoria’s ode to mandarin in cold weather (over at Bois de Jasmin) makes me feel like I can wear my citruses with pride.

Assam of India is on deck for later today.

SOTD is Atelier Figuier Ardent. I don’t know why I’m feeling fig so much in these colder temperatures instead of the more obvious cozy scents, but it’s working for me. Layering wih the lotion at my work desk (described as fig/allspice/nutmeg) is really nice.

ElizabethW Té today. It has lemon, which is nice on a cloudy day. I sometimes crave a black tea fragrance, but perhaps some smells are simply best as they occur naturally…

Thunked a sample of Kilian Sacred Wood this morning before breakfast. It smells pretty good.

I was doing some serious thinking about my collection last night after going through my sample stash over the weekend. For many months I’ve been continually searching for the next great thing, but I can get that newness kick from just wearing all the untried samples I have, and not continually buying new bottles. Thank you to Chocolatemarzipan for opening my eyes to the joy of thunking samples! It will make my no-buy year so much easier, and hopefully change my habits permanently.

CM8 has been of great help for me too. I am using and thunking samples almost ever day and I am finding things that satisfy me greatly. I am taking notes of what samples I enjoyed more and once I finished all of them I will have a clear idea of what should join my collection. All this no-buy period is making me save money not only for future full bottle purchases that I know I am going to love and enjoy, but for other expenses that are priority righ now. There have not been stunning new releases lately and untried samples might hold great surprises!

Stopped at Perfumarie yesterday…not to sniff (although I did a little…) but to buy more onion jam and try some tomato jam. We tried the onion on a pork tenderloin and I decided a “BUJ” (back up jar) made sense…

Haven’t tried the tomato jam yet. We will see. The onion is sweet has a sweetness because it seems to be carmelized in balsamic vinegar. If you google it, you can find the recipe – it’s by Beekman 1802.

They really, really are. I know it for a fact because I used to work in a lab with a dispenser where someone had mixed plain, peanut and peanut butter M&Ms. You know how sometimes you can flip a coin to make a decision, and you know what you really wanted based on whether you’re disappointed at the result? That is how this machine taught me that my heart belongs to peanut butter M&Ms.

Had a craving for neroli this AM and grabbed my decant of Hanbury. Funnily enough, the MCG site mentions no neroli in the notes, but close cousins–Sicilian Lime, Brazilian Bitter Orange, and Sicilian Sweet Orange.

Heading to the doctor this afternoon, so I should probably lay off the perfume, but golly Handbury is an antidote to the this gray rainy day.

Hey friends, in the gorgeous Jour d’Hermes extrait de parfum, which is gorgeous and green mango floral and terribly comforting, which I need right now. After further tests, it has been confirmed that my father has neuroendocrine cancer, and he will be starting chemo soon.

I’m having a hard time working right now, and spent most of yesterday working from home (and not well). Same so far today; I don’t really want to see or talk to people unless I absolutely have to. And besides, the cats are helping calm me down.

Anyway, my mind has been buzzing a lot lately, and it’s been a while since my mind felt clear and untroubled.

I am so sorry for your news! I hope you don’t have to worry too much about work, I’m sure people will understand what you’re going through. In the meantime, please take care of yourself, so you can take care of your father. I know how hard it can be to be someone’s caregiver. For me, it helps to do as much research as possible, but I know that’s not for everyone.

Thank you, jirish. Actually, I am not his caregiver at all, at least not yet. One of the things contributing to my stress is the fact that I’m on the other side of the country from him. My mother will be his primary care for now. I started researching it over the past week and got way too stressed out, but I think I’ll read a bit more about it soon.

I’m playing along two days in a row, which is unheard of! Today, I’m in the dark and beguiling beauty of En Voyage Zelda. One of my top 10, but rarely worn perfumes because it’s one of those needy scents. You know the kind- arresting, outstandingly gorgeous, plump, juicy, symmetrical, aloofly flirtatious, and requiring your laser beam focused attention. Subtlety shape shifting, you must zoom in with your third eye so as to not miss a single nuance. She’s a demanding dame…

And sometimes I’m just too old and tired to do her justice. But today, we’re good! ?

Last night, in my blacked out home-on-wheels, while urban stealth camping (not successfully since I have woken three times in the past 2 weeks to find the ??‍♂️??‍♀️ parked behind me ?. This camper top is a dead give away?), beneath my twinkle lights, with T-Rex already snoring under the covers, I once again went through my smelly stash. Nope, not my dirty laundry! No, no, no! I dumped ALL my decants and samples and went through every single one in an effort to continue to pare down to necessities. As a result of that, I found out this:

Sample BF Unsettled. (Fruity?!) No thanks
Small decant HG Sangri La. Gorgeous!
Small decant DSH Chinchilla. Yes, please!

And a whole bunch of others, languishing without love…A few I am keeping, but most are going. Some are dabbers, some sprayers, some from fellow NSTers, some from manufacturers, others from luckyscent, some full, some almost empty, some niche, some cheap thrills, all labeled except one mystery scent from Nordstrom ( I think it’s a diptyque) , and a couple with hand written illegible labels. They need a home.

I’m willing to ship CONUS. I would prefer to send to a single fairly regular commenter, and preferably to someone who may not have access to samples for whatever reason, doesn’t already have a largish collection, is busy adulting by working and raising kids and putting their needs/wants before his/her own, like parents do every single day. But, you don’t HAVE to be a parent. You know what I’m saying. There’s everything from smell bent, to by killian, to Hermès, to Tauer, to penhaligons, to Naomi goodsir (sp?), to Hiram green, ad infinitum. I have a bulging freezer bag full for whoever calls dibs first.

T-Rex and I are headed back into the woods today. You can email me at taiga101 in the land of yahooligans. I’ll have a connection while in the woods and will check email regularly. As soon as the smelly bundle is claimed, I’ll post here to let folks know. Then, I’ll swaddle the baby nicely and drop her in a mailbox by the end of the week. I’m hoping she doesn’t arrive with a wet diaper, but I cannot tape/secure all the samples. I WILL make sure it’s in a larger sealed bag.

Oh, and Happy Tuesday aka Monday’s Ugly Little Sister ?

I feel for you… my dad had back issues. I remember that he always seemed to have a bottle of pills specifically for his back.

Yeah, I was very happy that gentle stretching did the trick, and that I didn’t need the Advil today.

Thanks Petunia! Sometimes a sore back is a side effect of having kitty cats share the bed. It’s amazing how much space they want to take up.

Wearing Herve Domar’s Emeraude again today. It’s my favorite — well, my only — real coffee scent, and I’ll be sad when my dwindling decant is gone.

Yes. It reminds me of when I do one spray of Noir de Noir and one of Tuscan Leather.

I don’t miss the sick baby days. It’s so hard when they can’t tell you what is going on. Plus work! Hope tommorow is healthier and calmer.

I’m continuing to catalog my collection and cull those things I definitely can live without. I am down to smallish stuff now for freebies, ranging from 4 ml to 15 ml, so I am grouping them in 2s and 3s. Even so, I have so far another six items for the Freebiemeet, and that’s not counting the sample vials (there are about 40 of them) that I have set aside to give away. haven’t decided yet what to do about them–offer them as one lot, or divide them up?

Re: your sample vials. If they have several items in easy to assign groups such as leather, gourmand, green floral, etc, then offer them as sets. If there isn’t any rhyme or reason to them, offer them all as one lot. My $0.02 worth. ?

I was planning to divide them in to sets, butI have packed and shipped so many perfume packages these past few weeks that it is tempting to offer everything as one huge lot and be done with it. I’ll have to see how I feel on the 26th. I’ll probably divide them up into about 4 groups, on whatever basis makes sense to me.

If you do decide it would be easier for you to mail them as a single package, I’m sure someone looking to start their sniffing journey would be happy to get such a mixed bag. Don’t make things extra hard for yourself!

Wearing Clinique Wrappings tonight after a crazy, challenging day.

I was awake at 2am this morning and didn’t get back to sleep so I’ll probably crash and burn soon. Is there a full moon? Lots of weird things went on today.

The full moon is on the 21st, or late evening of the 20th in North and South America. There is also going to be a total lunar eclipse that evening.
