Thursday scent of the day 1/10

Posted by Robin on 10 January 2019 237 Comments

Almost-Friday and National Bittersweet Chocolate Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: more community project points + a good dose of cheer in Bvlgari Omnia Paraiba.

Reminder: on 1/11 we're doing My Precious...wear a scent that references jewels or precious metals. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image from the exhibit "Bulgari. Tribute to Femininity. Magnificent Roman Jewels” at the Kremlin museum through 13 January 2019.

Bvlgari Omnia (the original). I wish this lasted longer because it has the loveliest soft spices. Happy to be back in my collection after a week of trying NEST, which didn’t really suit me.

Coumarin, you smell gorgeous – & you get points from me for sure!
Another sadly discontinued one, though I managed to snag a bottle for my best friend when I was in Edinburgh around the time it was being discontinued, & got it for a really silly price – she keeps it for “best”, although a couple of times when she wore it to work she said it was the only fragrance she’d ever worn that male colleagues complimented her on!

I was in Penhaligon’s Mayfair shop not long after the new owners took charge & the ladies there, longtime staff, were deliciously indiscreet about certain fragrances, including Ostara, being discontinued, & about the new range with the faux aristocratic back stories & ‘Ye Olde English’ bottle tops (their term), ridiculous price increases etc – it was highly entertaining & informative, but I should pop in again on my next London visit to see if said ladies are still there…!

That’s a big stone on that picture! 😯

I am in Atelier des Ors Lune Feline. The name of the house is a good fit for the CP, plus, as cazaubon mentioned yesterday, there are gold flakes in the bottles (even though I only have a hand-decanted sample).

This is a cozy scent for winter. I believe it belongs to the category lucasai called “cuddlefluffs”. It is sweet, warm and forms a light cloud round me. When I tried it last week, I thought I mostly smelled suede and sweet notes. Today I get vanilla and musk. I miss suede, but I still like it. It’s neither too animalic nor too sweet or heavy.

Yay Glannys, I almost went with Larmes du Desert but I can’t find it. I am seriously debating a FB as I revisited my decant again and forgot how much I love this one.

Oh my, more dazzling Emeralds And ROMAN jewelry , great pick Robin!
IDK what I brought with me that would qualify for the CP, I am rooting through my stash. Atleast I can go with ‘gold’ in the titles for partial credit (but you should see the size of my stash).
I am hoping to ‘thunk-a-bunch’ of samples and small decants while here.
It is freeeeezing here I need amber to warm up, ok Ambre Russe sample it is! The color is Ruby red at least.

I’m about to make some carrot cake cupcakes to bring into work tomorrow. I make a pretty killer carrot cake, if I do say so myself. Mine has crushed pineapple, which adds moisture and texture. Plus! You’re getting a serving of vegetables AND fruit, so really, it’s more like health food than it is like cake.??

I am a chocoholic but good carrot cake always makes me detour. What is your frosting made of? Cream Cheese? Moist carrotty cake and a wicked frosting heaped high is so delicious.

Yes, a package of cream cheese and an entire stick of butter.?Which…probably cancels out any of the health benefits of the carrots. Lol.

      Carrot Cake recipe:
      2 cups flour
      2 teaspoon baking powder
      1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
      1 teaspoon salt
      2 teaspoon cinnamon
      1/2 teaspoon cloves
      1/2 teaspoon allspice
      1/2 teaspoon ground mace
Mix these ingredients together and set aside.

      4 eggs
      1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
      1 3/4 cups sugar
      1 teaspoon vanilla

      1 cup drained crushed pineapple
2 cups grated carrots (about 3-4)
      1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Beat eggs, add oil, sugar and vanilla. Gradually mix in flour mixture. Lastly, hand fold in pineapple, carrots and walnuts.

Batter will make one 9×13, two round 9 inch, or 24 cupcakes. Bake at 350. Cakes take 50-60 minutes and about 20-25 for cupcakes depending on your oven. I generally watch closely toward the end and the top will turn golden brown and toothpick comes out clean.

      Frosting:
      8 oz. package cream cheese
      1 stick butter
      2 cups powdered sugar
      1 teaspoon vanilla

Don’t forget to lick the beaters.?

Ugh. Tried to order some Kusmi tea over the winter holidays, during their sale. Their website was HORRIBLE and the order never went through. The customer service rep I eventually got in touch with was useless. Combined with the rude service I got at the Kusmi shops in Paris and Toulouse, I’ve decided to wash my hands clean of them. I have enjoyed their tea, but other people make great tea, too, with better customer service.

But! Hope your order process goes better than mine did.

    Good morning Y’all!

Having a completely different olfactory experience than last time in Mugler Angel EdT. Last time I got more of the berries and sweetness. Today I’m projecting a bit too much of the patchouli, but I’m sure it will settle down at some point…..maybe…..I hope….. 🙂

Two questions for perfume peeps in the know:
    1. Where can a US perfume lover sample Panah London scents? How can I order, or where can I go?
    2. If I order a scent online from Europe, would I pay duty tax and other fees at the website, or later on at the post office?

    THANKS Y’ALL!

I had purchased emerald earrings from a store in Istanbul when I was there on a cruise. I was told $x shipped. DHL charged me the fee and I disputed that amount with Amex out of the total owed. I got a credit for it no questions asked as it probably would cost Amex more to resolve it with the seller than to just give me the credit!

I am wearing Chanel 1932 and drinking Earl Grey tea. 1932 serves two purposes today:

    1. I have a dental appointment, and this is a pretty, calming scent.
    2. It was inspired by Chanel’s Bijoux de Diamants collection, Chanel’s first high jewelry collection. I read this on Chanel’s website this morning 🙂

Inspired by a poster yesterday I’m wearing Nest Indigo to compare figs. This one is more about the fruit than the leaf. I have a small rollerball of this that I don’t remember buying and has some kind of powdery looking residue in the bottom, AND I much prefer the Hermes. Indigo’s a fine enough office scent which is good for my lifestyle but I feel like I would like it better as a candle or something, I have plenty of prettier work-friendly scents already.

SOTD couple sprays of amber Sultan. Today it has a fruity note. What fruit? Well it’s Serge so it’s the post stew pot spawn of something plummy and something quincy after they’ve had their way with each other in the fermentation barrel.
I guess that would be a cp fail but I sure am going to make the laundromat smell grand

Robin I’d like to suggest a future cp. Wear a perfume that you are embarrassed about liking but love anyway. Extra points for celebrity, Avon, drugstore, Tinkerbell, etc. Mine is Deisel Loverdose and I have a weakness for Brut cologne.

Playing along in Iris Silver Mist, aka as Turnip Surprise. Does anyone else love Blackadder here? I think Turnip Surprise is from the episode called Beer, where Blackadder receives a visit from his great-aunt Lady Whiteadder, a stern and puritanical woman. It’s very funny and the opening of ISM is so earthy and rooty that carrots or turnips come to mind very easily!

Who would have thought that government shutdown would make TSA agents at airports to be so thorough! ? I had a couple of flights right before the shutdown, so I can clearly see the tactics of sabotaging the process by doing everything reeeaaally slow and as thoroughly as I don’t remember them doing it even with high levels of security alerts in the past. “Luckily,” the flight is being delayed so even with the longer security check I still have time to complain here.
Not participating in the CP today because I’m wearing Volutes – our traditional plane scent that we share with my vSO (not sprayed, I made a small roll on decant for flying).

I’m doing terribly for this week’s CP: SL Five o’clock au gingembre today. I smell good, though 🙂

Everything I’ve worn in 2019 has been from a sample/decant. Just the horrible thought of them evaporating away is making me lavish them with more love, which means neglecting my bottles. BUT I’m being more discriminating about which decants I’m wearing, and every scent I’ve worn in 2019 so far has been not just good but great!

Wearing Commodity Gold from a sample. It’s a fairly light, unobtrusive woody vanilla similar to Eau Duelle. Nice and easy for the office.

Has anyone watched the newish German tv show adaptation of Perfume on Netflix? My boyfriend and I finished it a couple nights ago, and I liked it very much. It’s very disturbing and explicit as a warning to those sensitive to those things. I’ve also finally started reading the book Perfime: The Story of a Murderer.

I did watch the movie that was directly based on the book, but it’s been many years.

I think the show did a good job of tying the book to the story while also having an original, modern take on things. I’m really liking the book so far. I love the tone, and it’s so cool to have scent woven in to every aspect of the story.

Insolence, the noir bulgari, kenzo amour, and la panthere soir. The gurlain is the cheapest at 17 dollars for 1.6 oz.

Not that my Marshall’s would have it, of course — but I’ve wanted Kenzo Amour forever and have kicked myself for not getting it back when the different-sized bottles were in different colors… I hope you get your heart’s true desire tomorrow!

I’ve been kicking myself for that too–I’d love a small bottle!
Best of luck to everyone checking out Marshall’s/TJMaxx clearance. I’ve read that there’s some good finds out there!

Sospiro Laylati for me, from a decant. It’s nice, but not great. I think the Sospiro line smells very designer-like and it’s inferior to the original Xerjoff line in my opinion.

Thunked a tiny sample of Bottega Veneta pour Homme Extreme, which was a nice leather und spice scent for two hours max. Extreme was just the short time i could smell it…
Got a decant of Under My Skin from francesca bianchi today. Wow, that a cuddly and musky scent with lots of costus! I like it a lot, but just have 6ml of it. Will see how long this will last….

I had a dental appt also, so just a spritz from a decant is OJ Rose Gold Extrait. After, a big spritz of Ligea from a super sweet NSTer, and to top all that off, sprays of Dioressence from the new bottle as well as Gypsy Water body cream. So it’s a very glam afternoon. The little things to make me smile.

SOTD = Quartz pour Femme, by Molyneux, from the sample stash. Going semi-precious today for the CP. I have a couple of scents in mind for tomorrow. I want to wear cozy and warming perfumes now!

Went to the mall and spritzed on Jo Malone Bronze Wood & Leather and tried the Myrrh & Tonka body cream. The perfume is smokey leather. It’s unisex, but I think I’d prefer to smell it on my husband. The Myrrh & Tonka body cream smells true to the scent & goid. They also have a candle which I liked. I wish they would do an Orris & Sandalwood body cream.

I also smelled the Tiffany scents: sheer, traditional and intense. Sheer was fresh floral, signature was citrusy, intense is powdery iris and my favourite.

I also received a Luckyscent sample pack of four of the Affinessence scents: cedre Iris, vanille Benjoin, Santal Basmati and Cuir Curcumin. They are all pleasant, but the price point is ridiculously high for what they are. More money saved!

OMG I LOVE Santal Basmati, the only Affinessence I’ve tried. I nearly bought it on the spot in Paris last year but as you say, the price is a tad elevated. I’ve been dreaming of a decant of the stuff though. Perhaps I should consider that sample pack–a couple mls to convince me I don’t need it, right? Cuir Curcumin sounds fascinating. I’ve never once smelled leather and thought to myself, You know what this needs? Turmeric.

    Beautiful necklace!

    SOTD yesterday Chergui!

SOTD = Parfum MDCI Chypre Palatin

Let’s see…Palatin sounds like palace and most palaces contain precious stuff. At least partial credit, no?

Back to work and therefore, back to Commuting Woes. I lost count so I am doing away with numbering them.

To the people with a death wish, I invite you to do the following:
    – wear an all black outfit
    – commute back to my train station after dark
    – while talking on phone to meet up with your illegally parked ride, cross at the intersection where: 1) two lanes of traffic exiting the parking deck make a left AND 2) one lane of traffic exiting the other deck make a right AND 3) one lane of buses and cabs cross the two lanes making a left out of the first deck mentioned above

I’m wearing something tomorrow that will fit the CP if you add an “e” to the name of the perfume. In the words of a Wheel of Fortune contestant “I would like to buy a vowel!”

Sure! The perfume name consists of two words, with first being the dominant note of the perfume. Also, the perfumer uses an initial as a last name!

        • Undina says:
          11 January 2019 at 2:21 am

OK… The closest to your clues I can think of is Rania J either Ambre Loup (but it’s not adding “e” but rather moving it) or Cuir Andalou (but to get to “Andalusite” it’ll take several more transformations). So I look forward to reading the correct answer 🙂

One benefit of cataloging my collection is that it makes it easier for me to see what I have. I was thinking that the only perfumes I had with gemstone or precious metal names were Amouage Gold and some Coty Emeraude from ~1980. I was planning to wear Gold tomorrow, but I am not sure I can handle it. I have not been feeling well the past couple of days and Gold is the sort of thing that I have to be feeling good to wear. I was wondering if I could justify Aftelier Alcehmy–after all, one of the goals of alchemy was to turn base metals into precious metals such as gold, so it fits, right? Then I noticed it in my inventory–a small, vintage bottle (from eBay) of Jovan Mink & Pearls. Perfect!

Fragrantica and Basenotes both give the year of release as 1968. It is a floral animalic chypre (my favorite kind of chypre).

Yes It does! I just used a drop between both hands. it’s a nice earthy backdrop; not that ISM needs that. Now it’s almost ISM on steroids..

You could even use the oil as a perfume alone; its really strong!
I also added some oil to unscented lotion during the week after a shower before bed; that was great as well.
