Wednesday scent of the day 12/5

Posted by Robin on 5 December 2018 247 Comments

It's Hump Day, Repeal Day and World Soil Day. Birthday wishes to Calvin Trillin and Joan Didion. What fragrance are you wearing?

In honor of Repeal Day, I thought I would spend another day in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Urban Moonshine.

Reminder: on 12/7, pick your poison BWF...wear a perfume with tuberose, gardenia or both.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Ole Smoky is "the leading distiller of premium moonshine in the U.S. and the first federally licensed distillery in the history of East Tennessee", and you can find them in Gatlinburg.

I got my FB of my frangipani bermuda perfume so I am in a big white floral today

I am trying out a new primer (well new to me) from the Ordinary brand, so far so good.

Tea is a latte made at home…

Is it still possible to buy Ordinary products?! I thought the company was in hiatus or something.

The CEO and founder had a bit of a social media episode. He has been removed, and the company is back up and running normally

Flopper that is awfully kind of you! I am currently nursing so will decline but really very nice of you to offer. I looked up the product and I am excited to eventually try it since it targets both “static and dynamic wrinkles” – I probably have loads of both.

I think it’s still possible to purchase The Ordinary products, as much of a skin care junkie that I am, it’s amazing I haven’t tried the line yet. :)

I placed an order with them during the post-Thanksgiving sale, so they are indeed open for business. Shipping seems a little slow, though.

Yes you can still buy them in the stores and online.
Their serum foundation is excellent, the serums/oils, and if you have red sensitive skin they have a booster/serum that is my holy grail.

Just a few drops covers my whole face. Its very calming and doesn’t irritate.

It’s like you are a week early, Robin. :)

My scent of the morning is Le Labo Lys 41. This is a lovely white floral perfume. It begins with a burst of tuberose and jasmine, while a vanillic lily joins later. I agree with Robin that this is a bright and sunny tuberose, unlike tropical and ripe Fracas. Longevity is around 4 hours, which is fine for me, but I am troubled by the fact that all the reviews I read describe it as a big scent, while on me it stays close to the skin. Maybe I got a fake? :(

About 7 hours after applying Lys 41 (it was long gone by that time), I sprayed Tom Ford Shanghai Lily. It is big and white floral, but clove definitely dominates. Tuberose is listed, but I cannot smell it – it is a a very spicy white floral bouquet on me. Great for winter – I cannot imagine wearing it in the warm weather.

My cat had a stressful night. Last night I went to bed early and when I got up at 7.30, I found that my mom accidentally locked her (the cat) out in the balcony. The balcony is glazed, there is a padded chair and a box, and it was a warm night for December, but the temperature was still a bit below the freezing point during the night. The cat gave me a series of short and very expressive meows when I let her out. I am pretty sure it was a complaint about having spent hours in the balcony. Both mom and I were very sorry. Don’t worry though – the kitty is fine and was immediately up to her usual antics.

Oh, dear! Poor kitty, but glad she’s not holding a grudge. I’ve accidentally locked one of my cats in closets and cupboards. He knows how to open them from the outside, but not from the inside, apparently.

No, one of her great qualities is that she does not hold grudges. She often gets stuck inside one of the closets, too. She loves napping there but cannot get outside on her own so she meows or scratches loudly demanding to be let out.

Funny, but she seemed to be more annoyed about not being able to go to other places than about cold. She purred when I petted her, but then quickly shifted her attention to bird-watching. :)

Testing out CK Reveal today, provided by therabbitsflower (thank you!)

I’ve never smelled anything quite like Reveal. It sort of smells like the last half of a perfume – like when you spray on a perfume the night before, and wake up with the drydown. It’s keeping me interested though – the first several minutes after spraying has a salty, spicy-pepperiness that would’ve worked well for the savory perfumes challenge from a few weeks ago. There’s some ingredient in Reveal that also reminds me just briefly of CK Euphoria, which was my first perfume love.

I’m also wearing a little bit of Neutrogena Body Oil, which smells like jasmine to me, so I’m sort of on theme with the CP!

Hey everybody! Today I’m wearing Calyx, from my vintage Prescriptives bottle. I know this one turns pretty easily, but my bottle smells great. I love that burst of fruit, followed by a musky dry down. Fantastic stuff.

. It has an ingredients list, and the batch code indicates it’s from 2009. But I think it smells just like I remember, which admittedly is mid 2000s.

Good to hear! I read a review from Fragrantica by a guy who worked at Prescriptives. He said they had to wear Calyx every day, even the men, and he said it still smells the same as he remembers.

Wasn’t in a BWF mood today, so am giving a full on testing of my BF Vetiverissimo sample. Smells similar to one of my vetiver incenses that I burn and love.
Half work day for me and then off for 2 days- the fun includes a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy tomorrow. I’ve had many so I’m not bothered by any if it. The most intolerable part is actually having to wait in a hospital-issue gown and robe in a waiting room for too long. Ugh.

I like it and don’t own a single vetiver-centric perfume so maybe this will be the one ? It’s pretty straighforward vetiver to me. I think a couple of people here reported not liking it and they’re more into vetiver than I am so YMMV, of course. Worth sampling if you like his stuff.

Oh, they knock you out good. The 1st time I had one I was 22 (1992) and they gave you twilight sedation then and I was pretty much awake the whole time, but a little loopy. THAT wasn’t fun and it was also painful. I think they started completely knocking people out because it was less efficient having patients who were awake and only semi cooperative.

Getting ready to cruise (literally) out of town on Saturday, so while I dust off the suitcase and do laundry, I am wearing Lili Bermuda’s Jasmine–going to the Bahamas, but close enough. We may get some snow later, so my trip out of town is well timed.

Robin, what do you think of Uptown Moonshine (which is now forever etched in my brain as Upstate Moonbeam)?

SOTD = Jo Malone Myrrhband Tonka

The bottle is almost going to be thunked. It was the bottle from which I did a split. I have a back-up of the super cute 50 mL.

To answer Perunia’s question yesterday as to which fragrance may be similar to VC&A Ambre Imperial, I would say it is an office-safe version of MFK Grand Soir. Grand Soir projects more, is chewier and heavier and has incense. Ambre Imperial is reserved.

    Commuting Woes No. 616:
Instead of holding on to a pole (there was a whole one just for her!), this woman decided to squeeze in between two people standing by the door and lean her right shoulder against the door so she can keep both hands free to hold her mobile device to watch a movie. I was one of the two people standing by the door and she was crowding me. Because it was a short ride anyway, I decided to not say anything but pretended the train was jerkier than usual and swayed my body against hers while the train was moving until she finally stood up straight and stopped crowding me.

Several weeks ago I mentioned a woman in the office who was looking for Lost & Found because she lost a 2nd diamond necklace. This past Monday, I saw her mail sitting in a credenza by me and I instant messaged her. She replied that she was working remotely and could I drop it off where her team sits in a secured area. Intold her she can ask someone in her team to stop by or she can pick it up herself when she’s back in the office. Really? I am not a messenger. Next time, I will not even let her know she has mail. She can stop by every so often and check.

I’m surprised that I’m the first person to wear Moon Bloom for the CP this week, though it might have a good showing on Friday.

I’ve gone on a sampling tear lately and was very bad over the weekend. I’m expecting the following samples this week: Fum Fragrances sample pack, January Scent Project Treebuoy and Burvuvu, and St. Clair Perfumes Casablanca. I also ordered 12 samples from Sixteen92, but they have about a 3 week turn time, so I won’t have them for a while. I immediately ordered more samples from them after receiving my first sample order last week. For those that like honey scents out honeyed florals Blood and Honey (honeyed floral) and Mellifera (honey with less pronounced florals) are must trys. I also enjoyed Baba Yaga and Tituba.

That sounds nice! Are you a jasmin fan? If so, do you have any jasmin recs for non-jasmin lovers? I know the flower is my namesake but I generally like smelling it in nature and not in a perfume

Hello Yasmina: for a light jasmine, with gardenia in the top notes Annick Goutal Un Matin d’Orage might suit you, it’s sheer and lovely (I recommend the EDT, the EDP is headier with tuberose), heavier, jasmine with sandalwood, more complex, Guerlain Samsara is a very good classic, I also find VC&A California Reverie very nice (jasmine with a beeswax note), and for jasmine with rose, Jean Patou Joy. If you want to explore more hardcore jasmine, the 3 Serge Lutens are worth exploring: A la Nuit, Sarrasins and La Religieuse.

In the dregs of my decant of Bas de Soie, which mostly evaporated away over the summer. Hyacinth is not quite a BWF but I like this one, except for the weird smoke note in the opening.

I’m in SB Bolshevixin Perfume Oil from a sweet NSTer.

Spent the last 3 hours on the phone trying to get my insurance reimbursement, which apparently is not possible since that “can’t” mail to any address other than home address. Electronic refund seems to be beyond their abilities, and now, they’re looking into “approval” to snail mail to local post office. I tried to tell them I’m not going to be here in 7-10 days to receive it, but that fell on deaf ears. And since I have no ID, a paper check is useless.

Spent an hour and half yesterday waiting in general delivery line to see if I had any mail (still waiting on my tags, which Florida DMV has sent twice since nov. 7th!), only to be told I had to go wait in another line. I could write a book about his post office and it’s surroundings, which seems to be a Mecca for the half clothed, methed-up populace. I brought T-Rex in the post office with me, even though it said seeing eye dogs only. No way I was going to chance another break-in and lose my dog!

If you want know what the beginning of the end of civilization looks like, do a drive-by of downtown San Jose. I don’t recommend walking in case you need to leave with speed?

It will get sorted. It’s a lesson in patience, of which I have none when it comes to this kind of junk. I have to say I’m astounded by this area. I’ve traveled demestically and internationally and have never seen such a cesspool as this town. Hard to even believe I’m in the US at anymore. Thanks for your BF vetiver feedback. I’m pretty sure I would like it simply because his scents just seem to fit my receptors so well.

This is a less active time of year, so most likely I won’t be working until after the first of the year. As soon as I get my credentials in the mail, I’m gone baby gone! I’ll be headed down to Arizona to do some winter camping in the desert until I start the next gig.

Still having a horribly busy and stressful week. Will have a week off next week, but am worn out and feel as though I need a decompression chamber, rather than a holiday. So no BWF, am honestly just not in the mood. Finished my sample of Close Up (Olfactive studio) because “more coffee”. I really like this, but I can see it languishing on my to buy list indefinitely.

Not a fan of BWF, but found a sample of Fath de Fath. Fruity white floral, which has tuberose too! Its nice and not too cloying, so noone complained.

Took part in Andy Tauers Advent Calendar and WON!!!! A cancel scented with LDDM for free! Happy Dance ???
Boyfriend hates scented candles, but will have to tolerate this. Luckily he is okay with this scent.
Tomorrow i will not wear tuberose again, i need a break

I’m wearing Joy Jean Patou, and thinking about wanting a powdery vintage perfume. What would be something to look for? I’ve explored Lanvin, Chanel, Guerlain…what else is there? To me, it’s like a powdery hug. Rouge d’hermes was close.

While I haven’t tried it myself, people always mention Molinard Habanita as a powder bomb. Ombre Rose isn’t that old, but powdery as well. My grandmother wore Chantilly and it was nice and powdery, but has probably gone downhill lately. Good luck!

Jasmins Marzipane as I had a meeting today and wanted lovely but not intrusive.

Snow flurries here today for a sizable chunk of the afternoon. Nothing is sticking, though. But the folks in Atlantic City are getting between 3 to 6 inches! Weird. ❄☃

SOTD = Oriza L. Legrand Relique d’Amour EdP, from the sample stash. I had to grab a heavier incense for the weather and my mood today. Thanks to the NSTer who had mentioned this one earlier in the week!

My SOTD is Tubéreuse by Goutal (discontinued), a very good and very unadorned tuberose. Denyse (Grain de Musc) has done a good review of it.
Still dithering about tomorrow, too many choices in this category. Could easily fill two weeks!
