Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, early December 2018

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2018 295 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to December. We're marking the new month with our same old lazy weekend open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance that says 'December' to you, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Note: shown is one of the limited edition Vinter 2018 tempered glass bowls from Ikea, $2.99 each.

I’m comparing Tam Dao on one wrist and 10 Corso Como on the other, and drinking a latte from the roadside place down the hill because our coffee maker is on the fritz and we are both too lazy to make french press this morning. The latte is sub-par, I’m sad to say, but I smell fantastic.

Wait… You were too lazy to make a French press coffee at home, but you didn’t mind dressing up and dragging yourself to the coffee shop?! 🙂 Not my definition of “lazy” but if you say so…

Tam Dao is very nice (is it EdT or EdP?).

I made Mr. G drag himself out the door for the coffee. 🙂 The Tam Dao is the EDT.

Yeah. I’ll probably insist on homemade coffee tomorrow – life is too short to drink bad coffee (or bad wine, or bad cocktails, or …). 😀

Does anyone read horoscopes? I just read my 2018 horoscope out of curiosity to see if it matched up with the reality of the past 12 months. I think the outcome must depend on how you read and interpret the material, how far you can manipulate the predictions to fit. Maybe it wasn’t a good horoscope astrology site. Anyway, off for a week to a remote part of the country, where carnivorous snails lurk in the bush. No wifi or phones but there will be a flushing toilet. JM snowdrop . The lupins are flowering, all along the roadsides pink, purple and magenta…amazing.

Carnivorous snails? Just how big can their prey get?

They are really cool and big. They eat worms. Beautiful shells, like polished wood.

I don’t read horoscopes, but my guilty pleasure is deciding if people match up to their star sign characteristics. I’m a typical Aquarius and whenever I meet a Bull or a Leo, I usually go “typical!” 🙂

Same here as to guilty pleasure. Mr. G is also a typical Aquarius (and scoffs heartily at the notion). I’m Pisces, but my moon and rising signs are both Virgo, and most of the time I think I fit that half-and-half.

I am trying Sylvaine Delacourte Vrigile today. This is my favorite 2018 perfume release so far. It is a lovely mix of vanilla and aromatic herbs – nothing cloying or sticky despite a gourmandish feel. Very soothing.

I’m in April Aromatics Ray of Light for the time being. This one really does make me smile, although I find it rather fleeting.

Earlier I was in a mish-mash of about a dozen or so different scents. I am taking a hard look at my unworn ‘fumes to decide which to give or swap away. So far I am up to 9 FBs and 3 rollerballs, with several others being undecided. It’s sobering to realize that my collection doesn’t look any smaller with them removed from it. I also realize, however, that of the things I have swapped or given away, I don’t miss any of them.

Why do you think it has been discontinued? I still see it on the brand’s site with an option to buy. It looks like they’re having troubles with the shopping cart but it’s the same issue for other perfumes on the site, so I hope the’ll resolve it on Monday.

You can no longer find it on Luckyscent, STC, TwistedLily nor TPC.
I am hoping this is a temporary problem but doesn’t explain why it is no longer on line in general.

A beautiful Sunday morning here, it feels like summer and finally I can really believe the holidays aren’t far away. I might have mentioned before that I think we New Zealand folk are quite lucky as regards the imagery around Christmas – we have two worlds. For us, it’s summer with the summer flowering pohutukawa, but the winter of snow and sleighs is equally Christmassy for me 🙂

It’s the Thorndon Fair here today, several streets are closed off for craft and food stalls, and it’s a great chance to look for small Christmas presents.

Perfume-wise, I’m testing another sample, Star of the Season by Orlov. So far, it’s a rich and sweet floral, and I rather like it. That’s a bit unfortunate, as it’s rather expensive.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! My father is visiting us in California from DC for four days, and every time I see him, I am startled anew to see how old he’s gotten. He and my mother are the same age, but she never seems old the way he does.

I’m wearing Rose Ikebana, but the scent that really says December to me is Ambre Narguilé. Perhaps tomorrow!

    Bunnie Bowl! Adorable!

I’m a micro spritz of Kenzo Jungle l’Elephant for all its warm, spicey, sweet goodness on a very rainy (with hail!) day. Winds are super gusty out here in the sticks, too.

For almost 2 years I’be been hauling around a large plastic metallic backed tarp. Every time I saw it, I wondered, “Why the heck am hauling this around?” Now I know.

A dear fellow traveler I met this assignment has helped me tremendously the last couple of days. Yesterday, we super tarped the broken barn door windows and used packing tape to seal everything up. Just in time for downpours of rain last night! Went this morning, and now have the windows replaced, yay!

As I went through the mess more thoroughly, I found my two laptops stuffed under the mattress in the garage area of the van. Also found my GPS, my camera, dash cam, and an blank money order for $200 that I hadn’t filled out yet.

Found drops of blood on the cabinets, under the bed, and on the roof of my overcab storage space area. Also have a collapsible step ladder and found splatters of blood on that. It’s definitely not T-Rex blood, because I looked her over for injuries very thoroughly after getting her back. So, either the perpetrator messed him/herself up bad trying to bust the window, or my brave little T-Rex loved up to her nickname. Not sure and don’t really care, but I hope that person is suffering!

We’re out in the hills now, and they are greening up right before my eyes! So beautiful!

Thanks so much to everyone for your kind and concerned comments! We are very good??

So sorry you had to go through all that, Deva, but very happy that darling Mario found your buddy, and that you found most if not all of your stuff (quite the mystery, that). Sounds like they were looking for cash and maybe ransacked your place to see if you had more hidden away. My house was robbed several years ago and it was the same. They didn’t touch electronics, just cash and jewelry. They took so many pieces that weren’t very valuable but we’re sentimental to me. A locket that my father gave me when I turned 18 hurts the most. I had a lock of his hair in it and he passed away quite young. I really hope that something turns up from the security cameras.

Oh, I’m so sorry! It’s worse when it’s a “home home” rather than a “rolling home,” I think. And those sentimental things are priceless! I have (had) my grandmothers wedding band that no one in the family wanted because it “wasn’t worth anything.” To me, it’s an irreplaceable and beloved object. After reading your post, I realized I had it tucked away with some other inexpensive jewelry, got up to look, and realized it’s missing, too. ?

I have a crucifix at home that she had on her wall my whole life, so that makes me feel better. Most importantly, the doggo and I are fine. Life is a lesson in loss. Things, people, love, and finally, life. ✌?

Jovoy La Liturgie des Heures because I wanted incense…
Spent all morning sorting piles, lots of piles, of catalogs, old magazines, random junk mail, farm related receipts I keep meaning to file, etc., etc. Ugh. Where does it all come from?
However, my dining room suddenly has a floor and no longer resembles a hoarder’s dream. I took many bags of these papers to the recycling center. Yay!
Now, refreshing myself at Starbucks drinking their newest offering, a juniper latte! I don’t like coffee very sweet, so I had them only put in half the flavor syrup. I like it, actually, it adds a mild herbal zip to the coffee.
Saturday, simple chores, time to dwaddle here. Life is good.

I’m here, on an odd Saturday off. I took the kids to the mall earlier. While I was in one store with my daughter, my son was supposed to be sitting in the mall sitting area. Instead, he wandered over to the bulk candy kiosk and bought 17 dollars worth of gummy fish!! He had twenty dollars which was to be used for Christmas presents for his sister and dad. I tried to return them but no luck. We had a very long talk and I hope he understood. My sotd was Chergui, but honestly it just doesn’t work for me, no matter how much I try. I retried Tiffany Intense again today, still like it, although I can’t say why, it just smells really good, lol?

Late here because we were out relatively early (at least by NYC standards…) and ended up walking 3.5 miles wandering downtown seeing a movie, shopping and lunch.

Ta’if with some spritzes of Gourmand Coquin on top. Far more sophisticated than my Buddy the Elf t-shirt that I wear around this time every year.

The long walk ended in Michae’s to buy some small gift bags. What was I thinking? Checkout line extended toward the back of the store. Who knew there were so many crafty people in this town?

Started the day out with FM Iris Poudre. It was glorious.. even a few sprays in my pj shirt.

My hubby had an early tee-time for this morning so I was hoping to laze about and drink coffee, go to the gym perhaps. The tee-time was a no-go as they didn’t actually book it somehow. So we went to an outlet mall where I stumbled across a bottle of Calyx by Prescriptives (not by Clinique). It’s a very reputable store (where I’ve purchased several bottles in the past). I had to have it! Donatella will have to be very forgiving this quarter as I’ve been very naughty lately..

The Clinique version is more floral and muted…that over the top puckering almost rotting fruit through the core note that was so prevalent in the original Prescriptives is missing. I had a bottle of the Clinique and enjoyed it enough to thunk it but having worn the original Prescriptives for about eight years and thunking multitudes of bottles I notice a difference between the two.

SOTD = Tom Ford Lost Cherry

Tonkanilla cherry liquor. Very nice and a good thing because I have a FB. When I first smelled this on paper, it was all cherry but on skin, woo!

Now comes the “Santa, I can explain” bit. I took the plunge on the Sunday of Black Friday Weekend. With all the email offers of $s or % off, plus cash back on eBates / MrRebates and minimally advertised specials through SAs, I had an opportunity to combine a gift card event (implemented as a $s off once you reach a threshold) with cash back. The only catch was I had to place the order online instead of through the SA with whom I usually work on these transactions (she happened to NOT be the person who told me about the gift card event). Anyway, I placed the order online and ended up with equivalent of 30% off for the bottle of Lost Cherry and a La Mer set I was eyeing. While I am feeling slightly guilty that I did not use the SA, at the end of the day, it’s my $s, my decision on how much to spend and the satisfaction of getting a “good” deal.

Speaking of “guilt”, I am so glad I changed my mind a week ago about going to Peddler’s Village with a friend because that would have taken the whole day and I really have too much to do. [I wrote a whole big paragraph on an annoyance associated with this but I am channeling my lovestosmellgood and letting it go. It was cathartic to write it though.]

I am still looking at a few more printers. I am sticking with an HP and have not decided yet on the Ink subscription service — it is a very good deal but it feels like it would be very invasive from the standpoint that it seems all the printing will have to route through the Internet. The service must know the density of the pages I’m printing to know how much ink I’ve used. Anyway, my goal is to have a working printer sometime tomorrow!

You know that I always loved your math and an ability to maximize discounts 🙂 Congratulations on your new bottle!

I think everyone wins when people stop doing things for a wrong reason. It’s healthier for everyone when somebody says “No” instead of forcing yourself into doing something contrary to what you want and your own interests. So yay for doing that and not feeling guilty!

Just FYI, I have an HP printer, and go through gallons of ink a year. I only use official proper HP ink cartridges, but always buy them on Amazon for about $8 to $20 less than the HP subscription prices, even when they off 20% off I pay less from Amazon. My printer takes 950 and 951 cartridges, so it may depend on the cartridges.

You are making me wish I had tried Lost Cherry in my skin instead of just the blotter….not that I’d buy it anyway, but it would be interesting to see the difference. Next time I’m shopping maybe.

I hear you on the ink subscription…rare that I allow such an intrusion. But laziness intervened….?

Happy December everyone. Listening to Advent Sunday service, my favorite hymn is being sung, O Come Emmanuel, it always makes me a bit tearful in a good way.

Perfumes for December: there will be a lot wearing of Youth Dew Amber Nude and Aqua Allegoria Winter Delice, and it is also a good time of year for ambers.

Deva, some folks will disagree but my wonky nose does NOT hone in on the vetiver…rather I am getting a rich, unctous almost boozy vanilla with dark patchouli and cocoa in the mix…it’s like a grown up vanilla with a bit of oomph…kind of like Vanille Insensee is not straight up vanilla, if that makes any sense? But others will tell you they smell the vetiver..however, I would not classify it as vetiver dominant. It’s gorgeous in the cold and one tiny spray lasts forever even on my scent devouring skin…another NSTer turned me on to it by sending me a decant of it…it’s gorgeous stuff and not very expensive for a full bottle.

It’s Sunday, and somehow I woke up with all kinds of energy (Mr. G rather glumly remarked on how “chipper” I am), so making french press coffee was no hardship at all, and I’m sampling Hermes Caleche. It’s the current EDT formulation, and is old-school soapy but not really “clean” exactly – must be that some tiny fraction of the civet in the vintage version can still be found in it. I have a 1980s-era purse spray of the parfum and think it has lost all of its top notes, but the civet in that is quite pronounced and the drydown is still rich and lovely. As is my coffee this morning, come to think of it!

Sunday. Today I tested two final samples in my bunch of 2018 perfume releases: Atelier des Ors Nuda Veritas and Memo Tiger’s Nest.

Nuda Veritas: definitely not my cup of tea. Smells like a laundry detergent or another household cleaning product. A metallic floral with too much metal and not enough flowers.

Tiger’s Nest: very balsamic. It reminded me a little of Ambre Sultan and OJ Tolu. Resinous and incense-y. A dry, almost powdery scent. Pretty good.

Overall I have tried ten 2018 releases so far:

    Lancome Iris Dragees (dislike)
    PdN Cap Neroli (like)
    Chanel Biarritz (dislike)
    Chanel Deauville (dislike)
    Chanel Venise (dislike)
Eutopie 11 (between neutral and like)
    Mancera Hindu Kush (dislike)
    Sylvaine Delacourte Virgile (love)
    Memo Tiger’s Nest (like)
Atelier des Ors Nuda Veritas (dislike).

My opinions may change and I may do some last moment sniffing of other new scents, but I think I know what I will wear for “Best of 2018” community project.

Semi-accidentally gave myself three sprays, which is a lot—the scent is potent and the sprayer is really smooth and delivers a great spray. It’s a little more scent than I would like and certainly much more than I need for a day that will largely be spent in a car, but I needed to be thoroughly bolstered for a frustrating day with family.

It felt terrific in the moment but I really really regret it now. It will just make things worse from now on. I am mad at my own temper. Gahhh.

I’ve been MIA for several days because of being so busy up in Michigan between helping my mother out and preparing for, then giving, my three lectures at U of M. Things went pretty well except that the weather was an execrable mix of wind, snow, rain, and ice, and I came down with a very bad cold, and had to struggle through my last lecture while blowing my nose every few pages (Yeah, gross). I’m home in Houston now and only want to sleep. The 78 degree temperature is helping. One of my cats died on Friday. She was very elderly and frail, so it wasn’t a shock, but I do feel so sad that I wasn’t able to be with her at the very end. It’s hard. Meanwhile, I got several nice perfume things in the mail including a sample of Zoologist T Rex, and tried it yesterday. Despite my congested head, I could DEFINITELY smell it, and as they say, it’s really a BEAST. Very unusual and potent. I am not sure what cade smell like but I guess that’s the note that’s most striking, but there’s a lot of incense and then something quite rubbery or petroleum-y–reminded me of LL Patch 24. I’m going to have to give this one more of a run when I can smell the notes better, but I did really like it.

I’m glad your lectures went well. It’s a crazy time of year. The weather in Ann Arbor today was in the 50s

Calypso, so sorry about your cat! And sorry the weather (and your health) did not cooperate with your lectures, but glad you managed to give all 3, that’s an achievement.

Aww; I’m so sorry to hear about your kitty cat. Young or old, it isn’t easy when they cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Sending you hugs and thinking good thoughts for you.

Today’s weather: gray, drizzly. Verdict: Yucky (but at least it’s not snow!)
Today’s SOTD: Dahlia Noir. Verdict: This is probably the furthest thing from an evening scent my nose can think of, despite it’s name. It is a pretty powder with some nice floral touches, perfect for day wear. I really liked this one; my only gripe is that it could’ve been a smidge stronger and lasted longer.

Dahlia Noir confused me to with the name. It just doesn’t match up. It is very pretty though.

I’m still on a GS and BD kick, so I wore Ta’if yesterday and Traversee du Bosphore today. I basically did nothing all weekend except go out for brunch yesterday and go to the grocery today. However, I did get a lot of cleaning, organizing, and movie watching done at home.

I’ve been doing a lot of sampling lately, and I’ll wait to mention some that I’ve loved during the week when it will get more views. But I’ve finally gotten around to trying Oriza Legrand Relique d’Amour and liked it very much. I’ve also now tried all the Eris perfumes and can say my favorites are Mx and Night Flower. I didn’t really like Ma Bete and found Belle du Jour to be similar to Night Flower but not as good on me. Also, Raw Spirit Desert Blush was nice but not something I need.

Just recently discovered this aromatic site and have become pretty much addicted to reading the reviews of Robin, Angela, Kevin, et al + enjoy the comments very much, too. I went to luckyscent.com last night and ordered 7 samples (Frangipani, Warsawza, & 5 violet or v-adjacent fragrances), and also got a couple Hermes samples at Sephora this afternoon (I already wear Un Jardin sur le Toit & Merveilles Bleue). Thanks to Angela’s article on chypres, I remembered that I wore Chanel Cristalle EDT my early 20’s (over 30 years ago) and longed to experience it again so much, I ordered a bottle for my bday from chanel.com. (Hope I still love it; if not, I’ll have to find someone to unload it on). Anyway, thanks for the good reading and spirited conviviality!

Howdy Ellebe! I remember reading Angela’s post on chypres. It was inspiring for me too. I also read a Fragrantica review about Warsawza that said it reminded them of the original YSL Champagne and it does! Cristalle is gorgeous.

Thank you, Petunia! I’m actually a little shocked that a little WMass rube, such as I was, gravitated to such a sophisticated scent back in ’85…lmao… I cannot WAIT to smell the Warsawza…(cuz, yah, I’m a lil’ PolAm former rube…) ?
