Thursday scent of the day 11/29

Posted by Robin on 29 November 2018 267 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! There are 32 more days to go for the year. Birthdays today: Clive Staples Lewis and Madeleine L'Engle. What fragrance are you wearing?

I going the delicious route, with L’Artisan Parfumeur Noir Exquis by Bertrand Duchaufour.

Reminder: 11/30 will be Renegades Friday...wear a perfume by Mark Buxton, Bertrand Duchaufour or Geza Schoen, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    House twins, Robin. 🙂

I am in L’Artisan Parfumeur Poivre Piquant by Bertrand Duchaufour (finished my sample). Honey, pepper, milky notes, woody notes – not too spicy, not too sweet. Very good. But it disappears too soon on my skin… Maybe it would perform better when sprayed, not dabbed (I only had a small vial without a sprayer).

Isn’t so interesting how scents are different sprayed versus dabbed

I cannot remember how well that one lasted on me! Great scent although overshadowed (imho) by the Safran Troublant.

Safran Troublant is definitely more dramatic, although at the moment I prefer Poivre Piquant.

    Lili Bermuda Frangipani, again.

Tea is a Russian fruit tea and I have no idea the name just picked it up at Kalustyan’s here in the city.

Its cold but I can handle any temperature as long as the sun is out

I am with you on cold and sun. Short and grey days are the worst part of late autumn and winter for me.
But it looks like you are wearing a sunny white floral this week. 🙂

I have to it’s one thing I love about living in New Mexico after moving here last year- it does get quite cold (next week it’s supposed to be in the 30s all week) but it’s almost always sunny and dry. I’ll try and send as much sun your way as possible!

I think when the sun is out I am more motivated to move and get going..I don’t mind the refreshing temperatures with the sun on my face. A little Vitamin D too…
With the 2 little ones, some days I have no choice, even if its gray and cloudy I still have to go outside.

I’m in Escentric 04, the last of the Escentric scents from Geza Schoen. Tomorrow I’m planning to wear the first of the Molecules. Having read Kevin’s review of Molecule 04 (Javanol) I don’t think it will be that one. I’m leaning toward the vetiveryle acetate in Molecule 03. I love vetiver.

    Wearing Roja’s Unspoken.
I bought this when RD had his outlet sale years ago – only paid 15.99 GBP; and frankly, that is likely all I would want to pay. A rather wan little chypre – needs more OOMPH.

Roja Dove seems like a very famous/prolific perfumer, but I rarely come across anyone wearing his creations in this forum. I have never smelled any of them or come across this line in the niche perfumeries I have been to.

In my last little bit of Dzongkha by BD. I love the idea of this one, but, as with most smoky scents, it doesn’t quite work for me.

I went to Ulta yesterday and spritzed a few things, including NR Fleur Musc, which I am now in love with. I have a bottle of For Her edt and they’re pretty similar, but that is somehow not dissuading me from wanting a bottle of FM as well . . .

I actually tested the edp yesterday as well – I’d never smelled it before. It was lovely, of course, but I think I actually do slightly prefer the edt (which I suspect puts me in the minority around here). The edt is one of my cold weather go-tos, but I don’t like it at all in the heat, oddly enough.

I second lillyjo. I will pick Ulta over Sephora every time because of their great rewards program and regular coupon discounts. Plus Ulta has a fun mix of pricier, prestige brands and lower-cost drugstore brands.

(Promise I’m not a shill for Ulta – just a fan!)

There’s a couple of things I love that I can only get at Sephora, but I completely agree that Ulta is more fun – they always have new, fun, cheap stuff to look at rather than just the pricier lines.

I’m daring to wear Memo Italian Leather to work today (gasp!). 🙂 Kidding a little – it has a couple of unusual notes for a leather fragrance (tomato leaf and a rather dry iris) that I love but suspect others might not. Oh well, I’m not expecting a lot of close contact with people today. Happy Friday Eve, NSTers!

I like their flavoured rooibos teas: peppermint chocolate, strawberry chocolate, coconut, vanilla, etc. They are naturally caffeine-free and I drink them in the evenings. For my one cup of black caffeinated tea per day, I drink Fortnum & Mason or Kusmi.

I’m really set in my ways 🙂 My “Top 3” haven’t changed in the last 7 years, probably (with #1 staying there for… my whole life). And Top 20 are more or less the same for years.
It doesn’t mean that I don’t love, like and wear other perfumes, but if I had to grab just 3 to save from the burning building, I wouldn’t even pause to think.

Cherry can go either way for me. I used to wear a Coty Cherry Vanilla, and Escada Cherries in the Air. Most of my bad experience has been with cherry lotions, which are just yuk on me.

In Duchaufour’s I Miss Violet. To me, this lovely violet is a bit of a crushed, candied violet with green stems and leaves, and leather, some make-up scent in there as well, lipstick?… but not harsh. A soft version of these elements.

So here are my questions: Do you think that this is what the perfumer was aiming for? Do you think he got a brief that asked for a soft, greenish, leatherish, make-up violet? And then, the name. Who comes up with that name, and when? Does the company have the name from the start and the perfumer fills in the product? Or does the name come later–folks smell the perfume, draft a list of names, and one is chosen that best represents the perfume and the perfume company?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

(It is bucketing rain outside and our new kitten has plunked himself down onto the heat vent. I have work to do, but have an extraordinary desire to crawl back into bed with a book and the kitten!)

I have a horror of cute word plays or puns when it comes to perfume names. They always seem twee and slightly infantile, and turn me off the scent. Most of my perfumes have a kind of neutrality in their names ( all the Jo Malones) or are single word , evocative (Journey). Bapteme du Feu and Debaser are borderline for me. Funny,eh.

Puns on the word “miss” are definitely cutesy, and in perfume tilt towards twee. I agree that this violet perfume might even smell slightly better if named Brunhilde or Albnfasiji or some such! But do give it a sniff if you come across it. Then let us know if you were Miss Taken about it . . . .

(So so so sorry. Couldn’t help it. )

I was thinking of names I find too prescriptive, that allow no room for the imagination.

‘What would love do?’ (I don’t know but making the bed once in a while would be a start)

Chestnuts!!! We got a bag of them last weekend at the farmers’ market, and then I roasted them in the open fire of our gas stove until my boyfriend freaked out (“WHAT IF THE FIRE ALARM GOES OFF”–not unfairly; I’d tried to roast padron peppers on the flames the day before and the fire alarms in three different rooms kept going off simultaneously, because apparently the people who design these alarms don’t know how to cook, and two of the alarms can’t be turned off). Anyway, I look forward to roasting the rest of them tonight.

Copal Azur again, because it’s wet and miserable and I wanted to cheer up with some incense while thinking of azure coasts.

Haha! You are right. Fire alarm makers do not know how to cook. I must share that bit of wisdom with my husband who is horrified by my smokey kitchen enterprises, especially when I toast items directly on the flame. (Of course chicken can be roasted at 500! I didn’t marinade it for 24 hours in buttermilk and spices to puttt puttt puttt cook it at 375!!)

To be fair, our oven is about 10 years older than this one (http://www.savonappliance.com/58.html) and 500 is a relative temperature–somewhere between 425 and 525 is my guess at any given moment!

But give those high temps a whirl. Chicken should be close to room temperature when you start cooking so it cooks evenly, and it will only take 60-80 minutes to reach 165– and it will be crispy and delicious.

We have touchy fire alarms/smoke detectors, too. We kept the some of the packaging they came in when we replaced ours… looks like a little shower cap. If we know that our cooking is going to be high temperature, or smoky, we pop it on to the detector that is most likely to go nuts. Works like a charm… all we have to do is remember to take it off when we are finished cooking.

I wrecked my back pulling up sodden carpet yesterday and recovered by watching Monty Don going around gardens in Italy and France. There was a nice episode about artist’s’ gardens including Giverny and Paul Cezanne’s, and another on kitchen gardens (France) and a super medicinal garden (Italy). It’s on netflix . My friend’s mother died this week. she was 106! Imagine that! What changes in the world she must have seen ( I never met her because she lived in Edmonton). Happy Friday everyone.

Mohur, from the split meet. I’m happy with the little decant I have but I think overall the NV scents are just a like, not a love for me.
The chestnuts in the picture – horse chestnuts, I believe, rather than the edible kind – remind me of childhood autumns rooting through wet leaves for chestnuts. I was particularly fond of those that were still half stuck in the spiky shell.
Question for you: I’d like to give my younger dd (11) a little scent this xmas. Ideally something I can get from Fragrancenet for a discount, nothing too fruity or too sweet, but still “young”, perhaps a bit gourmand/vanilla even. Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps Stella? Thanks!

The first scent I have that came to mind is Elie Saab Le Parfum L’Eau Couture. It’s sweetness is fresh. Almond. Orange Blossom. Vanilla.

Maybe the Sakura body mist from Rituals? They have it on Amazon for $17, though retails at $25, so not a bank breaker. I have the hand cream which is lighter than the body mist, but the scent is something an 11 y.o. would probably like. It’s sweet but sheer and not cloying. Cherry blossom +rice milk or something Cheerful, definitely.
Otherwise, maybe a Philosophy mini set? https://www.fragrancenet.com/perfume/philosophy/philosophy-variety/4-piece-variety-with-live-joyously-eau-de-parfum-and-and-fresh-cream-edt-and-living-grace-edt-and-loveswept-edt-and-all-are-spray-.5-oz#307480

Florid Honey Oud on this beautiful rainy day (we need all the rain we can get here in NorthCal), though my cat Rusty might disagree: he got scared by the sound of strong rain (and, I think, even some thunder) and was on high alert during the morning feeding – not that it spoiled his appetite.

Rusty, being an orange cat, is as loyal as cats go: it takes weeks of someone living with him and feeding him daily (when we have long trips) for him to finally give in and come to sit on this person’s lap – whereas it’s almost a daily ritual with him and me, especially when it gets colder 😉

Got called into work and will be stuck at work until 8 tonight. Woke up in a haze of LADDM and switched to Deneuve after I took a shower. I hate it when people just randomly quit. I was hoping for a day off but that must wait until Saturday. I am holding off on buying any full bottles until the end of December or until my Christmas shopping is done. My week of “under the radar weird” continues. The light in our bedroom switched itself on at 5-something this morning. Unfortunately, it does that on occasion, since the switch is wired through a remote control. And said remote will pick up any stray signals from whatever source is in the area. “It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.” Phooey.

I have some good new to report, though. I got a phone call from my mom earlier today. She moved into the assisted living facility the day after Thanksgiving, and sounded rather happy and present during her call. It was a load off my mind, and eased a guilty conscience a bit as well.

SOTD = Oriza L. Legrand Reve d’Ossian, from the sample stash and a kind NSTer. I was in the mood for spicy incense to counter the cold, windy weather here.

Liquid Dreams again today–this really is a very pretty floral, and I am glad I got the FB. Late this afternoon, when LD had worn off, I sprayed some Calling All Angels on one arm and Tempted Muse on the other. CAA reminds me quite a bit of Messe de Minuit. TM doesn’t remind me of anything else I own. It is floral, and it is fruity, but it is miles from the typical fruity floral. Overall, I am quite impressed with this line. I have not always had good luck with natural perfumes. Some of them are far too fleeting on my skin, and many of them don’t smell like essential oils blends rather than fully composed perfumes. These smell like real perfumes, and have good longevity.

On another note, I am going through my collection to select things for the next Freebie Meet or Swap Meet. I have a number of things that I have to admit just don’t suit me. I really don’t need to replace them with other perfumes, especially things I haven’t sniffed, so most (or all) will likely be freebies.

    SOTD = NVC Mohur Extrait

Definitely deeper and richer than the EDP. This is a perfume I can wear several days in a row without going bonkers.

I hope my nephew decides to go home for the weekend so he can help me with the old printer drop off (I have 2) and pick up the new one. I have not yet picked one out but it is looking more like I’ll be getting an HP. I am still researching the ink subscription LizzieB mentioned the other day.

    Commuting Woes No.616:
I got delayed getting home again due to a disabled train. Station announcements and arrivals board did not match reality and the train I was aiming for just went poof from the boards with no announcement whatsoever. It wasn’t any better yesterday when trains were delayed a good 25 minutes!

It is relatively small and the the odor of hope and despair came wafting out. I don’t have that many samples in there and it looks like I have not really seriously reviewed anything, according to my sample journal since April, 2017! In my defense, I probably have not ordered any new samples since well before that. I have kept an empty sample of Sammarco Alter, to remind me how much I love it and also an almost empty sample of Serge Noir to remind me of how much I do not like it. Also a scant amount of Van Eusersdorff Classic Patchouli so I can compare it to Santa Maria Novella Patchouli and finally decide which perfume is the ONE PATCHOULI TO RULE THEM ALL. I just can never seem to get to the Santa Maria Novella store in Chevy Chase….

Very late to the party – yesterday I wore CdG 2 and as always, wonder why I don’t wear it more often. So quirky yet elegant.
