Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-November 2018

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2018 240 Comments

Our usual lazy weekend open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the last fragrance tried that exceeded your expectations, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

If I had oodles of money, I’d get the Frederic Malle body butters! More reasonably, try Atelier Cologne (I like Orange Sanguine) or l’Occitane!

Amouage has glorious body butters, and for a less expensive but still fairly rare option, try Red Flower or Natura Brasil.

Anything by Amouage (my favorite is Dia), their creams are so luxe. For cheap thrills, I like Kiehl’s Musk lotion, it’s highly scented and makes a great base to layer with other lotions or perfumes.

Hello from smoky-aired CA—I’m missing the beautifully clean air of Boise :( Well, at least I get to see my cats.

I smell great in 5 O’ Clock au Gingembre. I’ve never understood the name of that fragrance. What does that MEAN?

I love that fragrance, it was my first SL. To me, the name is perfect. An elegant afternoon British tea with a hint of ginger.

Ah! I don’t usually think of 5 o’clock as being tea time, and I don’t get any tea notes from that scent, but your explanation makes sense :)

I get the tea only because I drink a lot of herbal ginger tea and bergamot notes remind me of Early grey even without the black tea part :) No idea why in Canada and US high tea is earlier in the afternoon, 3 o’clock doesn’t have the same sound to it.

good luck with the smoke and fires, it’s awful that it’s becoming a yearly occurence lately.

Yep, just saw on the news the air quality here is worse than he most polluted major cities across the globe. I Boise was crystal clear.

I had a small decant of 5 O’Clock a few years back, but it went bad very quickly for some reason.

Yup, so true. Our campus has been closed since 5pm last Wednesday and we’re closed again today. Only essential staff are at work.
The good news is I’ve been chipping away at moving our items from the house to our new apartment. We brought one of the cats to the new apartment to let him sniff around. The hubby has offered several times to pack my armoire (where several of my perfumes are) but I’ve managed to find other moving projects for him to work on instead.

hope your to-do-list-blues are waning, cazabon. I love a to do list, it makes me feel good to cross things off as I complete them. I usually put the worst-most-awful-hard things at the top of the list, then sometimes cheat by doing something easy from the bottom when my inner child groans at the injustice of it all. ;)

One day off to catch up on chores, then three in a row. Wanted something simple and easy today, so I went with FCWC but now the sweetness is annoying the heck out of me. I’m headed to do laundry then a shower and will switch to something (much) less sweet after.

My bitter mood may have something to do with my intolerance for sweet perfumes right now. I have been musing about the widely diverging cultures at different hospitals, and on different units within the same facility. While I didn’t care for Reno (geographically speaking), I worked with a great group of caring, hard working nurses.

At my current location, I have been amazed at how hard staff works to get out of work. The lack of caring and empathy is like nothing I have seen before. I have been a nurse since before dirt and have never seen such sloppy, apathetic workers. It’s going to be a loooong 3 months. What an eye opener. ????

On a positive note, skipped down to Monterey and Carmel the other day and WOW! So gorgeous! 17 Mile Drive should not be missed, even though it costs ten dollars and some change.

Hey Deva, are you in NorCal? How’s the smoke been where you are? It has just been getting worse and worse in Oakland.

Through an NST split, I have a vat of FCWC shower gel which seems like the perfect medium for the fragrance.

Yes, that’s nice while showering and doesn’t hang around long if you want to wear whatever perfume after. The body butter has the most staying power, scent wise.

I’m in San Jose. The smoke is noticble visually, but not overwhelming. Just a blanket haze over everything.

I kept the body butter out of the set, and was very disappointed how little scent it has. Lasts five minutes tops then nothing. At least it moisturizes well, but I definitely wouln’t repurchase.

So I should arrange my life so as never to be in hospital in San Jose, right?

Deva, are there lots & lots of nurses who do what you do, or are you a relatively small group? Mostly wondering if you cross paths with the same people in different locations.

Yes, make those exact arrangements! ????

I would say overall we’re a small percentage. Some areas use travelers more, some less. Some areas are very seasonal. Most travelers are young people who are not attached, but I have met some that are married and travel with kids. Also, friends will frequently travel together to be able to save on housing. I haven’t run across anyone more than once, but there are hundreds of facilities across the nation (or worldwide if you want to go the international route). I prefer smaller, more rural hospitals because those are the areas I like to explore and camp in, but usually these are not big draws for 99.9% of most travelers, so I’d be unlikely to meet anyone again. Most want to go where the money is, which are big urban areas, hospitals in the middle of converting to E-MAR and E-DOC systems, magnet facilities, and strike situations. San Jose is way too much for my liking, but I decided to come because the money is good and I want to take the summer off for Alaska. That’s the only reason I’m here. However, I will find a more rural location for my next contract, and not care about the money.

If you are ever unfortunate enough to be admitted, make sure your room and bed have been properly cleaned. Really. Look around, including the hand rails and the entire bed frame. Two places that hospitals cut corners are housekeeping and nursing. And they will continue to make cuts in these areas because reimbursement decreases every year. I could tell you some stories….!

          • Robin says:
            18 November 2018 at 10:01 pm

Thank you, that is all fascinating! And a few months in San Jose seems a reasonable trade for a summer in Alaska.

I’ve been lucky so far but I suppose few of us will avoid hospital stays indefinitely. Maybe I need to bring my own housekeeper and nurse, ack.

            Deva – unfortunately, so true.
As a frequent flier, I’ve seen some stuff. I typically try to find the sanitizing wipes they have stored in the room and wipe down I.V. poles, hand rails/door knobs and bed frame, just in case. :)

I’m a high up persona in a relatively small company. It’s amazing how that culture shift can happen and then how hard it is to break, because it’s then the acceptable set point for the group (and even if the original problem person leaves, it is then often perpetuated by the remaining group).

      Sad.

That said, if a new manager is tasked with making a shift, it CAN happen!

Yes, totally agree. The great/horrible thing about travel nursing:

        1) I will not likely work at an outstanding facility because personnel are paid and treated well, and are therefore loyal. These hospitals have no need for traveling nurses because they retain staff. 2) I will generally end up in crap facilities because they cannot retain nurses due to unreasonable workload, low pay, or general indifference to needs of staff and patients. These are generally “for profit” facilities that don’t give two hoots about anything but the bottom line.
        3) the most excellent thing is it’s all temporary! ????

Question: I’m a huge citrus fragrance lover, lemon in particular and I love mint as well. I have a big jug of the Everyone 3 in 1 Citrus + Mint soap and I LOVE the fragrance. If you’re familiar with that and/or have any thoughts about anything citrus + mint fragrance-wise, please let me know.

Went out early and got almost all my T’giving food/stuff. It was so much better than shopping with the usual crowds (and by usual, I mean any old Saturday afternoon).

Heading to a college football game today and will be wearing Poivre Samarcande again as I enjoyed it so much yesterday.

do you remember when I told you a couple of weeks ago that I was having a job interview? Well, this company got back to me few days ago to invite me for a second interview, this time not on Skype but face to face at their headquarters. So at the end of November I’ll be going to Germany. I’m so excited.

Today I’ve been trying Jacques Fath Velours Boise, one of the four fragrances in their new collection that launched at TFWA in Cannes. It’s an alcoholic-woody-spicy mashup.

Last weekend I went to Nordstrom to get Hermes Caleche as an early Christmas present for myself. (What can I say, I love smelling like fancy soap.) The saleslady told me that Caleche has been discontinued because the man who originally created it had passed the formula onto his son, who created Kelly Caleche, but the son just died, and so Hermes wasn’t allowed to use the formula anymore. But that they’ve hired Jean Patou to try to recreate it! I just thought the perfume community would be very interested in knowing that Jean Claude Ellena is the secret son of Guy Robert, and Jean Patou has resurrected! :P

Haha! To paraphrase Twain, the news of Ellena’s death and Patou’s life seem to have been greatly exaggerated. I wish only to add to your narrative that fortunately for all of us Guy Robert’s mother had a secret love child, who’s own son begat eBay, making all of their perfumes available at discount prices in perpetuity. Such a talented family.

Here’s my question for some of you…Who makes the morning cup of tea/coffee in your family for the partner still in bed? My dad always got up first and made tea for my mum, forever. I always get up first and make coffee 7 days a week. I think i should be able to be the ‘remain in bed’ person at weekends. Ba ha. Sunday! I am going to wear Serge Lutens this week . The orange one.

Okay, up and off For a walk. At this time of year there are lots of baby rabbits on the hill but also lots of dead baby hedge hogs on the roads…they must just get old enough to go out and they get hit . I saw three on the road yesterday, always happens at this time of year, like clockwork.

I’m up at the crack of dawn (or before hand) so I make the coffee.. But my hubby does a lot of the cooking so I guess there’s a trade-off somewhere in there.

      Enjoy your Serge!

Sad about the hedge hogs; we have the same problem with marmots here in the early summer.

You should be the remain in bed person, but the trick is to out wait the other. If you are secretly lying there thinking about how much you’d like to go for a walk and look at dead hedgehogs, there is little hope for pillow-side coffee. You have to be committed. Eventually your partner will rise, albeit slightly irritated from caffeine withdrawal, and will make the coffee. But if your partner gets even the tiniest inkling that you are fighting the urge to get on with your life, coffee will remain your bailiwick! Hold firm.

How is your son doing, by the way. I hope he is feeling less sad.

I do all of the cooking (and of course then the grocery shopping) and supervise all of the kids’ school work. But hubby gets up first, makes me a proper espesso based coffee with his fancy Simonelli machine (a rare indulgence on his part) and send it to me with our eldest. He is also good with packing the dishwasher. Or you could say his tolerance for stacks of dirty dishes is lower than mine!

T-Rex does nothing except clean the dishes, so I have nothing to add on this subject. But, I grew up in a household where there really weren’t gender (or time) specific roles. No one out-waited the other. My father was born into a very patriarchal culture but refused to be confined by it and many times helped with housework, dishes, etc. My mom was the “money man” and handled the finances, home and auto repairs, and did a lot of quilting and cross stitch. No one waited for anyone and did their own thing, while asking “Can I get you anything?” as they were pottering about. The harmony between them may be for no other reason than my dad was a coffee drinker and my mom was a tea drinker.????

He does all the grocery shopping and cooking too. But then, I schlep off to work every day and he’s retired, so we think the balance is fair … for now.

It’s been such a busy week, I’m so happy to finally be able to relax a bit. My batch of samples arrived yesterday, I currently have Vilhelm Perfumerie’s Stockholm 1978 on one hand and Serge Lutens Santal Majuscule on another. Enjoying both quite a bit, even though they’re a bit powdery, which I sometimes find difficult. Santal Majuscule is warmer in character so it is a bit more fitting right now, but Stockholm is very lovely as well with its almond and geranium notes.

It is a stunningly beautiful day here today. Crisp and clear with a sparkling blue sky. I was motivated to go for an early bike ride which was great but went to the market and couldn’t resist an orange and chocolate scone. It tasted great but now I’ll need to go for a srcond ride to try and make up for it!
The word ‘orange’ made me think of 24 Faubourg so that will be my SOTD. I don’t think to wear it very often but it is a beauty.

Had a horrid night’s sleep trying to find a comfortable position due to a stiff neck. This morning it is, if possible, worse. Have taken copious amounts of Advil and am girding myself for holiday grocery shopping. Was wearing Stephen Jones when I went to bed last night, and in addition to having an anvil tied to my neck and left shoulder this AM some mosquitos obviously liked my scent last night. My right and only working arm is now covered in bites. I’m a bit of a wreck. Hopefully a hot shower will improve things. Might be a Jicky day if I can make it out of bed.

We have in-laws and outlaws all arriving Tues night, so this little trick of my neck has to clear up in time for me to get the house ready and to cook for the holiday!

It’s sunny and blustery here but the wind is driving the California smoke that drifted north out to sea. I’m wearing Cuir de Russie parfum from the Chanel personal perfume counter I got at Fumerie’s swap. I smell like I have lots of money. I bought some premade puff pastry dough and now I can’t decide what to make. Napoleons? Croissants? Pot pie? Fruit tart? Too many choices!

I LOVE Oregon! It’s my favorite state so far, had one of my favorite hospitals, and wonderful, friendly people! If I ever get back to Florida to sell my house, I can see finding a place in Oregon- If I ever buy a house again, which I doubt. Oregonians have a lot to be proud of: a large percentage of preserved landmass, lovely people, courteous drivers, winters are moderate in the Willamette Valley, the Best. Coastline. Ever! The campgrounds, parks, and public lands are well cared for and affordable. My favorite place on earth at this very moment is the Cape Perpetua area…lord, I could go on FOREVER about Oregon! (I prefer to pump my own gas though..)

Deva, we would be so honored and blessed if we could be the state that finally convinces you to settle down and stay. And if you chose the Portland area, you could always cross the river into Washington to buy gas — lots of people do, albeit more for the prices than for the opportunity to handle heavy, flammable equipment. ????

SotD is Casmir. A few more wears and this bottle will be a thunk. I will definely replace it though, it is one my all time perfume loves. I’m off work until the 27th and my college kiddos (the “bigs” as we call them) will be home this week! I can hardly wait.????
Madtownteen and I headed to one of the used bookstores in town this morning. I was specifically in search of Start Where You Are recommended in last week’s poll. It sounds like just what I need in my life right now. They didn’t have it so I will have to get it from the library. My daughter scored 3 books for ten bucks though! That should keep her busy until Monday.

    Happy weekend everyone!

About to head to work for a quarterly meeting and trying to stay positive about the interruption to my weekend. I’ve been wearing Tauer Loretta today from a small decant that an NSTer kindly swapped with me earlier in the year. I noticed it’s been evaporating, so I figure I better use it before I can’t anymore. It’s lovely! I so wish this is what Sotto la Lune de Tuberose (not sure if I got that name right) smelled like, but that one smelled like straight up gasoline on me. I’ll enjoy Loretta while I can though and look forward to the wafts during my meeting.

Another busy night at work. ULTA is now carrying Kylie Jenner lip products, I had to stop on my way to work and get some for my daughter for Christmas. She’s going to be thrilled!, the display they had was selling through very fast. My sotd is Oud Bouquet. I went with the more is more method today, and am really enjoying it. I even got a compliment ????when I was doing just one or two sprays, all i got was sticky sweet. Today, I’m finally getting the flotals, and woodiness.

The one I have is on fragrance net right now, but I see they raised the price. I got mine from zullily for almost half that, so it’s worth it to look around. From what I’ve heard the current bottle is the same, but I haven’t smelled it. (No affiliation to any place mentioned)

Saturday! What a crazy week. I did work my way thru my Zoo samples though. Fig My Love might be calling my name.

So, our New Jersey trip didn’t happen, which does not break my heart. First I cancelled in order to take care of cancer kitty, who needs too many meds to trust him to a pet sitter. The good news is that he seems to be responding well to chemo. Appetite way up and eating like a pig. Getting stronger about fighting me on taking the meds, too, which is not such a bonus. His new un-favorite is a liquid which I can tell you tastes like bubblegum. I know this because he’s gotten awfully good at whipping that head around and spraying it all over the place, including all over me. I can’t say I understand why they’d make a cat medicine taste like bubblegum, but I suppose I should be grateful it’s not fish oil.

Husband tried to go to NJ but instead spent the day Thursday hanging around at SFO as his flight was postponed, postponed, postponed — and finally cancelled when Newark airport closed. We should have known it wouldn’t work out… his flight number was 2018. Not a good number for us!

Hoping the smoke clears soon. It’s an oddly blinding white glare out in the canyon nearly all day. Most peculiar. We might get rain next week! Yayyy!

Oy vey. You must have wished for better reasons to not have made it to NJ; however, you made the best out of the circumstance and I’m glad things seem to be going well for cancer-kitty. With the snow in NY/NJ, better that your husband was waiting to get on a plane than for the plane to have been diverted with nowhere to go!

Do you think the Zoo fragrances are “better” because the brand was able to circumvent the IFRA restrictions?

Oh yes, if your flight is going to be messed up, by far the best situation is to be stuck in your home airport. As he said, it was his shortest east coast trip ever. :)

I dunno if The Zoo fragrances are ‘better’. I’m no expert… just tried them like I would any other, and mostly concluded that his tastes and mine don’t have a lot of overlap. We like many of the same notes, but I didn’t necessarily enjoy how he put them together.

Having an early Sunday morning, my cat was waiting patiently in front of the door, she never wakes me up for food, and when I saw her out of the corner of my eye I had to get up. Caught up with all the comments and I am truly sorry for the smoke situation in CA. And when I think of the people who weren’t able to escape from the fires and the death toll rising every day. Wishing for a lot of rain to make things better.

I’m in the mood to bake a cake, my trusted raspberry one, I think.

Saw Starchild on the back cover, put the needle to the vinyl, and life was forever changed ????I prefer 70s KISS music, but I will take Paul Stanley anyway I can get him. ????????????????????

I’m in TX for my annual girlfriend reunion but unfortunately have come down with a bad case of food poisoning. Ughh! To make matters worse we sat behind a person at the show yesterday who was wearing the most vile perfume ever – so cheap and skreetchy. That made me feel even sicker. It was a rare occasion when I thought fragrance bans are a good thing.

In Bvlgari Omnia today. Just spritzed at 1130 out in my van because I didn’t have time this morning. (Well, I kept hitting snooze, hoping I would wake up on a non-work day. Didn’t work????). I’ve got a nice busted windshield today, so will have to get that fixed this week.

Still chilly here, so I’m loving the weather (other than the smokiness). I like being able to leave the dog in the van when I’m at work, because I can come out on break/lunch and let her out. Although she is good for 13-14 hours, I don’t like her to be uncomfortable holding the unmentionables. ????

Spent the weekend decorating for Christmas. Yes, I realize it’s not Thanksgiving yet- I usually do wait until the week after. I’ve been depressed this week though and my fiancé surprised me with a new 10’ tree (our ceilings are taller in the new house) to cheer me up so I decided what the heck. I will admit, it has perked me up lol.

Wore Arabia again yesterday because it’s very holiday-ish to me and haven’t put anything on yet today. Maybe will sample something new.

I hope all of you have had a wondering weekend. This week, when counting my blessings, each of you and this fragrant community will be among them!
