Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-October 2018

Posted by Robin on 13 October 2018 232 Comments

It's our same old standard issue open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your last fantastic bargain find, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

How is it mid-October already? Aggghhh…

It is R A I N I N G in Los Angeles, which never happens, so I’m trying to figure out what to wear in the studio for an intense workday and a nice dinner with the BF tonight. Cap Neroli? Black Afghano? What’s in between those two poles of lighter floral citrus and masculine heroin den?

I vote for Black Afghano. I’m in San Diego and went for Black Phantom myself.

Cap Neroli on a cool day is an interesting thing to sniff.

I’m happy for the rain. I went for a walk on the beach this morning, put my hood up to keep of the rain. I had the sand all to myself until two joggers went by. 😀

Sounds lovely! I went for a nightwalk yesterday evening and the raindrops on asphalt and swishing of passing cars were exactly the meditation one needed!

Inspired by Bear, I am wearing Beloved Woman on this first fall day with 50s weather. Good God! I forgot how glorious and beautiful this is.

Did you know that you can get a 3.4oz bottle now for just $121? That’s an insanely good deal for such a powerful, long lasting and beautiful perfume.

Sitting outside in the sun watching the birds and listening to my kids giggle. A very nice and unusual saturday. Hugs to you all!

It is a beautiful scent, but the retail price was ridiculous!

I had to do some clothes shopping this week, especially trousers because one I wore just tore… The new ones I got are unusual for me, never had carrot fit pants with stripes. Guess I grew up to try something else.

Perfume wise I’m wearing L’Artisan Mont de Narcisse. I received it and Mandarina Corsica samples this week. Not exactly my type of thing – mostly immortelle, pepper, not much of narcissus from it. The other one is NOT for me, oozing maltol all over the place.

        I think you’re right.

I bought a pair of super skinny jeans last week because they fit and were on clearance for $10! I’m short so I buy almost anything I try on that fits and is reasonably styled.

I thought I would not enjoy the skinny fit, but they are surprisingly comfy. There’s lycra in the fabric, so they stretch. Works under a tunic quite nicely. 😀

I used to think the same thing about skinny jeans – I am not a person who likes clothes to fit snugly – but with what seems to be a ubiquitous portion of Lycra in the fabric, they are surprisingly comfortable, and dare I say even more versatile than a standard jean.

Yes, with the cold temps coming I bought a number of new pants as well. I refuse to wear tights and so all winter long I’m in pants or jeans. Once the weather is in the 60s I’m a skirts girl, and sometimes dresses, but mainly skirts.

Jumped into the animal print and plaid trend with who pairs and then the rest simple black and a brown. Happy to have that out of the way!

Beautiful cool morning here! Today is my Monday, but that’s ok. Things are humming along with a bump here and there just to keep stufff interesting.

After shower, I will be in Philosophy FCWC again, because it’s quite easy and snuggly. T-Rex is working on the second half of her breakfast with enthusiasm. I feed her half out of a bowl and the second half goes in a food dispensing ball, so she has to work at it to get each kibble. She caught the hang of super quick, because you know, it FOOD!

Happy weekend to the M-F folks and have a great day to the rest of us. Go forth and conquer all naysayers with a your beautiful sillage…!

I also don’t mind working weekends and holidays because HEY! less management stalking the halls! ???????? Plus it gives people with family and kids that time to be together.

I was too exhausted and shell-shocked to talk about it Friday, but I have some great news to share. After the heartbreaking loss of both our dogs this summer, right before we left Montreal for the winter we got a new puppy girl! She is a red sable Papillon, cute as a button and super cuddly. Her name is Mila. We feel so happy and blessed.

If it is Saturday, it must be Caturday. I had been checking Instagram quite often, not just so I can see my brother’s very colorful pictures documenting his adventures in Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, but also to see which cat account to follow.

While perusing the animal theme, I came across the following. Warning: I almost peed in my pants, just sayin’

On-call weekend, I have been paged 7 time since 4:45 this morning. Ugh. Oh, well, $$$.
Wearing D.S.& Durga Durga today, to cheer me up. This is my favorite perfume at the moment, closely followed, of course, by Mohur, Bell Rives, Erdenstern, and Mitsouko, in no particular order….
Sorta all over the map with my scents preferences these days.
I am thinking about hosting a split of Durga at the next splitmeet, if I am assured of at least a couple takers of 10 ml aliquots. Anyone think they might be interested in that?

To me, Durga is just sweet tuberrose, plush and deep, pretty linear, cheerful and soothing at the same time, and very pretty. I really don’t differentiate other notes – I was surprised to read that melon is supposed to be in there.

I went to Sephora this morning, so I am wearing No. 5 L’Eau on one wrist and L’Ambre des Merveilles on the other. Surpringly, they are dynamite together. I came home with the No. 5 L’Eau, partially inspired by the upcoming Friday project. My mom wears No. 5, and I love it, but I can’t wear it myself without feeling like I’m playing dress up. The L’Eau is a nice tribute that I actually feel comfortable in.

Have a fabulous fragrant day. I just mowed the lawn while smelling like a million bucks – who knows what other adventures await?

I put on a spritz of No. 5 Eau de Parfum today at the perfume counter of a department store (Boscov’s, based in Pennsylvania). In the last three days or so before that, I had tried a few of the samples Jepster kindly sent me from the freebiemeet. I like the ones I’ve tried so far. Those are: Atelier Cologne ‘Mandarin Glaciale,’ Cartier ‘Baiser Vole,’ and ‘Chloe.’ Several more yet to try, which should keep me entertained for days. 🙂 Thanks, Jepster! Also, CobraRose said she would send some samples when a street fair wasn’t blocking her way to the post office. Thanks in advance! 🙂

It’s been gray and rainy here for the better part of the past six months, but it cheers me up to smell like citrus and flowers and spices. 🙂

Scentless today- I have a headache and really hope the medication I took would help.
    2 questions:
    1. What perfumes do you have in your purse as an emergency stash?
    2. What perfumes would you like to see offered during the upcoming splitmeet?
    My answers:
    1. Ann Gerard Rose Cut travel spray and a sample of Chanel No5 L’Eau.
    2. Montale Patchouli Leaves, Chanel Cristalle edt and OJ Sampaquita. Although I am not sure I will participate- I am having a baby in the beginning of November and will have to give up wearing my smelly friends for a while…
    Looking forward to everyone’s’ answers!

Thanks for the warning Lovestosmellgood! I am already aware of this issue, it is more of a question should I treat myself a little ( like I NEED any more perfume), or just seat tight on my hands or spend $$ on something else (skincare?).

      Great questions!

My purse stash includes all decants of Vol de Nuit EDT, L’Atessa, FM Iris Poudre, Insolence (both EDT and edp), and La Pausa edt from a wonderful NST’er.

Maybe a decant or split of some vintage Opium. I’ve been looking but don’t think I’d need a full bottle of that powerhouse. It’s gorgeous though.

Best wishes for an easy delivery to you. Congratulations!

Byzance EdP today. After months of curiosity about it, I can finally report trying and comparing it to the EdT. And… Not much different! There are a few touches to differentiate: the EdP has a bit more pronounced tuberose, the sandalwood base is a bit creamier. But worth the huge price difference? No.

I am still utterly convinced men can wear this without raising an eyebrow.

I finished Warlight last night. I was so into the book I read until my eyes hurt. Reading Ondaatje makes me want to go back and re-read the English Patient. He is such an exquisite writer and so poetic.
Now I am on to an author V over at BdJ recommend, Yasunari Kawabata. I am reading a short story by him.

Usual farmers market and morning errands. I made zucchini fritters for lunch and had rose macaroons with tea just now.

I am in Coco Noir body cream and Coco fragrance on top.

Had a spectacular flight home , high above the southern alps all dusted with fresh snow, the little plane bumping along into a head wind like a boat on a stormy sea . It’s the end of school holidays so the front three rows were occupied by “unaccompanied minors” all dressed up and looking slightly anxious about travelling alone. Landed sideways into a fierce crosswind, exchanged looks with my neighbouring passenger, one or two claps. Home…looked shabbier on the outside but a massive lasagne and wine awaiting, mad dogs doing happy circuits, all good. Wearing aesop marrakesh intense…a just right scent for cool weather …spicey cardamon, cedar, sandalwood …try it in your autumn. Chires today! Have a lovely weekend.

I hear you on the turbulence, had that myself flying Thursday. Lots of calming deep breaths were needed. And happy doggie cirsuits are the best! My husband arrived in the car last night and the puppy was wagging her tiny tail madly and crawling all over him giving kisses. He really needed that after three grueling days in the car crossing the continent.

PSA: Birchbox (autocorrect, “bitch ox,” really?!!) is having 50% off their perfumes (discount given in the cart): https://www.birchbox.com/category/11992
There is a mix of mainstream (e.g. Cartier or Juicy Couture) and others (Atelier Cologne, ELDO, L’Artisan, Penhaligon’s, Mondale, MCMC, etc).

Have a great weekend everyone! (And now I need to decide what perfume to wear)

    SOTD = Zoologist T-Rex

Smoky incensy birch tar leather and my nose picked up the vanilla as well. I did 2 spritzes from the bottle I just opened today as I am getting my decanting mojo back to fulfill freebies and swaps. I got a lot of birch tar (probably from the cade oil so you have to like that type of burnt smell as it is definitely what you will get at top and it threads all the way through development and drydown. You can soften this by layering on a vanilla perfume (I’m thinking Vanille 44 or Tihota will work very well).

    Question:

I got the bracelet pictured below when I was in Barcelona last year. It is a triple loop wraparound bracelet with a magnetic clasp at the end. I’m looking for different colors and patterns and my searches have not yielded anything to my liking either due to the leather part being too thick or too textured or the magnetic clasp not being of the same type. Does anyone know where I can buy more of these? Thanks.

In other news, I don’t recall if I mentioned this previously — if you drop off empty containers of make-up, face & body products at L’Occitane, you get 10% off your purchase! That said, if you can wait, L’Occitane ipwill have a friends and family event October 31 to November 6 in-store and online (with code FRIEND).

Pandora is a rip off of Troll Beads, which are more edgy (and fun) than Pandora. They have all kinds of necklaces and bracelets…

I remember the battle over Nintendo when my kids were young. The cost, the time spent playing, the policing I knew I would have to do, it all made me avoid the issue for years. We waited to have gaming systems in the house until my youngest was 9 years old. Now it hardly seems to matter with smart phones, tablets, and tvs that are internet connected, screen time is inevitable. 😉 Let the play games!

Same here. My oldest-now 22- was recently lamenting how when he was younger we only allowed gaming on the weekends and he was the last of his friends to be able to play the games rated M for mature. We both kind of chuckled about it because as you say, seems kind of pointless now.

What I want to do is run out to the nursery and buy huge numbers of late-blooming plants … but I know the rain will be back and they’ll all go soggy and droopy and depressing. Revisiting my sample of Tihota today. When I put it on this morning, the first thing that it reminded me of was a bowl of cocoa pebbles and milk. This is funny for a couple of reasons…1: I haven’t had a bowl in forever and 2: cocoa is not listed in the notes. I get cocoa on the opening of Dame’s BFMV too though, so there you go.

In other scented news, I picked up some Schmidt’s deodorant at target yesterday to try and omg is it scratchy on my skin. The texture is almost grainy. I’m all for a natural deodorant, but I don’t know if my very sensitive skin can take that abrasiveness. I’ll give it a couple more tries.

Excited for the splitmeet next Saturday.????

Jujubes were my mother’s all time favorite candy. To me, it seemed as though their main mission was not to assuage one’s sweet tooth, but to dislodge every filling and/or crown in the mouth. ????

Just back from a run and enjoying the cooler temps as long as I’m wrapped up and warm. Clouds were picture taking worthy so I had to stop and take a few pics.

Making a red lentil soup shortly, and trying a new recipe of spiced pumpkin snack cake that’s vegan. Using flaxseed flour and almond flour, sugar is maple syrup. We’ll see how this turns out.

No scent today, but maybe after a shower. 😉

One spray of Dusita La Douceur de Siam from a sample I got at ZGO in San Francisco. Really nice at first – my husband was quite taken. But now, it’s bugging me. Something in it is making me headachey.

My sister returned my dad’s leased car today. It’s an early return, because he did a three-year lease. So, there’s still over a year left. We are hearing we may owe them $$ to return it. Who leases a car to someone who is 89 years old and doesn’t expect that it may be returned early?

I liked that one for first 30 minutes as well. Less in love with it as time passed. So, like chewing gum, I found myself refreshing it with additional sprays. (I am sure I was not fit for human company by the end of the day!)

I don’t understand how they could ask you or your sister to pay on the lease since you didn’t lease it? I think that’s awful of them.

Sitting down to a pizza lunch after spending the morning at a local punpkin patch with some friends and their hilarious toddler.
Felt kinda gross when i woke up, so skipped the scent. It was a cool morning but the afternoon is sunny and warm, so kinda think chanel n 5 edt will be nice when i get home.
Pedicures with the hubby this evening. (No polish for him!)

I have the ‘third cousin once removed’ (tried to think of something opposite of ‘mother’) of all galas to go to tonight. My husband is the ED for a hospital foundation that hosts the hospital’s annual gala–so I attend as “wife of…” 700+ guests this year. Had my hair colored, and blown out, and it looks lovely. The rest of me looks like a butternut squash. I am a butternut squash with nice hair. I have to leave in 2 hours and I have literally no idea what I am going to wear. What looks good on butternut squash? I can’t go in butter and sage . . . obviously! Tempting as hell.

Since I started the day in Beige edp, I may up my game to the parfum for the evening . . .

I broke out APOM and Lumiere Noire both femme versions today. I bought the feminine coffret ages ago (which is to say about 3 years 😉 ) but I just don’t ever reach for them. After some sniffing today, they are both meh to me.

I feel like I need to do spring cleaning here in the fall and see what other perfumes need to be rehomed. I cleaned out some samples and what out from my Closet of Shame a month or so ago but it didn’t really make a big dent…or free up space for more perfume… 😐 Perfume should be loved and appreciated…like art. I am inspired seeing those participating in the use it up/thunk club. I am going to go through my coffers and figure out what stays and what goes before the new year…put my fragrance house in order…

My brother is into video games the way I am into perfume 😉 and browses many video game forums which often get advanced tip-off on these codes which is how I sometimes catch wind of them early. They seem to release them about once a month and the last one was 9/27…seems like they might time one end of this month/to coincide w/ Halloween maybe?…I shall be sure to post any codes as soon as I receive the intel. 🙂

A beautiful morning at the Balloon Fiesta. I love this week in Albuquerque so much! I’ve posted some pics throughout the week on my Instagram if anyone wants to see. I think you can find it under my gravatar. After that we went to the Rio Grande Arts and Crafts festival which only made me want to have thousands of dollars to spend on art. Great stuff.

My MIL leaves tomorrow morning. Love her but it can’t come fast enough! ???? I wore No. 19 today for strength.

My parents used to live in a semi-rural area near a hot air balloon training field, and I loved watching the balloons filling up in the pre-dawn chill of an early summer morning, and then rising over the field and drifting off with the wind.

She can run rings around people half her age. Before leaving for the fair she served me yummy homemade crepes stuffed with lemon curd and fresh blueberries with rasberry sauce. Yum!

Been away for a while, and it seems I completely missed a freebiemeet! I had a little bag of samples ready to go and everything.

SOTD is Rihanna Rebelle, which I’m trying for the first time. I may pass it on to a younger cousin or just wear it when I’m in a particular mood- the chocolate and coffee notes are obvious, though the other sweet notes all blend together. At $3 and change, there was no risk.

As LizzieB said, you can post freebies even on the regular threads. I’ve cut back on offering them in the special Freebiemeets as I’ve noticed them being claimed by people who only show up during the Freebiemeet and I would much rather mine go to people I “know” from their comments here.

So Friday after work, I stopped and got my flu shot. Now, I’m up, and feeling quite sick. Does anyone know, if the shot will still help? Or is it to soon so any benefit was just voided?

It could be the shot that is making you feel ill.? But if you in fact have the flu, most likely you were exposed to it before Friday. Really sorry to hear you feel so lousy. Drink lots of fluids! I hope you can get some sleep at least.

Don’t worry, it is likely the shot that can mimic flu symptoms, it means it worked and you should be protected from the flu virus later on.

I hope you get better soon. Although I am not a medical professional, from personal experience, getting the shot could cause achiness and fever. I rarely get that result but it had happened.

    SOTD = Slumberhouse Baque

Sweet tobacco and cedar are the main notes I get out of this perfume, a perfect combination for Fall!

A little over a month ago, I had a mini makeover at Sephora focusing on foundation. I asked for an explanation of how to use the Beauty Blender (or any foam), including how to clean it, etc. as I was interested in a smoother finish. As someone here mentioned (Nancyleandros, I think), you dot foundation on your cheeks and basically bounce the blender all over your face. Anyway, fast forward until now and I have not used my Besuty Blender. Yesterday and today, I tapped my finger pads to my foundation dotted face (instead of swiping and swirling) and the results were a smoother finish, if I may say so myself!

I like the BB better than brushes too. I think brushes are great for photos ot an evening out because they leave a heavier finish. The BB provides a more natural, dewy finish that I prefer for daytime. At least that has been my experience. I don’t wear a lot of makeup.

      • hemabelle says:

I totally agree on the finish changes, but I pick mine based on the time it takes me to get ready.

The clean-up for the BB takes me a lot longer, and I end up using it for evenings out as opposed to day-face. I’m sure if it was easier to clean it wouldn’t matter so much to me, but GERMS!!!

I have tried a beauty blender, but I don’t like that it absorbs so much of the foundation. I’ve always used my finger pads, and of course I’ve made sure that my hands are clean

I mostly use my fingertips as you do. I finish by going over my face with the blender at the end to catch areas that I may have missed.
