Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late September 2018

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2018 291 Comments

Happy National Coffee Day! We're burning off the caffeine with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite fragrance with a coffee note, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

What’s going to happen to me on the days when I log in, and you haven’t posted first with reassuring fragrance solidity? Huh? What will I do then, my scented north star?

And now for a proper comment.

Recently I identified FM Vetiver Extraordinaire in the wild! It’s only the second time I’ve ever been completely sure I recognized someone else’s scent. And the previous time was an FM too… Portrait of a Lady. AND both times were at the symphony in SF. (cue twilight zone music…)

No scent yet today, and shortly, my scent will be a mix of leaves and sweat. We have rain coming next week! Ack! Must clean out the gutters and drain boxes and blow-dry the leaves away… gonna be a way busy outdoor weekend.

Do you have a subscription and end up sitting in the same spot?

Just for laughs, however way I originally spelled “subscription”, spellcheck changed it to “cubs riptide”.

Nope. Well, yes, I have a subscription, but at SF Symphony that doesn’t get you the same seats every time. They have a nice ‘make your own subscription’ program I really like, where you can choose any concert and whatever category of seating you want for that particular concert.

    SOTD Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolu.
SOTE Chanel Cuir de Russie for an evening with my sister’s in-laws who arrived in NY from Italy for the first time on Monday. They are having a super great time here and tonight we will have dinner at one of those boats which go around Manhattan in the Hudson-East River. We have usually done that in summer time when the temps are gorgeous. Beautiful, sunny day in the city, but pretty cool at night time. Well, let’s have a nice time no matter what!

    Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

SOTD is PdN Vetyyver. Warm and cool at the same time. It’s kinda magical like that.

Only 4 more weeks here in Sketch City and I’m hitting the road! Stoked to be getting out of this area. My mucous membranes are so dry that I’m getting nose bleeds when I blow my nose. So gross! This has been my least favorite place so far, although I’m sure much of my ill will has to do with the ridiculous heat here (90F here yesterday!).

Many small things to finalize on the van. I’m hoping to get the woodwork in the back half finished today. The front half is done except for caulking the sink and getting the water hooked up (waiting for a part from my old friend Amazon).

Had a van free day yesterday and went exploring with a friend. We were supposed to hike, but her definition of hiking was walking from the car to roadside historical markers. Oh well, still enjoyable.

So happy my little traveling perfume box will have a snug little cubby to fit in. There will be minimal shifting around and it’s out of the way, but easily accessible at the same time.

Smell well, y’all! The freebiemeet is looking good!

Haha. Yesterday my husband and I went for a walk down to Lake Merrritt (very small “lake”, maybe 3 and a half miles around, in the middle of Oakland) …. about a mile and a half to get there plus approximately 2/3s of the way around the lake I talked him into walking a a few blocks to Whole Foods and doing our grocery shopping, and then taking Lyft home. My logic? Beautiful walk AND we did not have to go grocery shopping when we got home!

I did some Chanel bottle research then took a chance on the bay of evil for a “vintage” bottle. It smells almost exactly like the stuff in my original bottle. It was in one of the black plastic Chanel atomizers which I think helped preserve it.

The Art Gallery of Toronto and Royal Ontario Museum are definitely worthwhile, and the Bata Shoe Museum is fun (Manolo Blahnik exhibition!).

The folks at the Guerlain shop were super-nice when I visited and I have done phone orders with them since then. Holt Renfrew has a good selection of fancy perfume. Maybe a Torontonian can chime in about whether there is a successor to Noor boutique…?

Finally, a trip out to Toronto Islands is nice too, if quieter off-season.

Hi there, I am not a torontonian but not far and go there quite often. We have excellent if not the best Chinese food in NA????. I would suggest visiting Chinatown and nearby Kingsington market if you are a foodie. Distillery is fun place to visit and great place for photos if you are a photographer. There are outdoor art shows and cool sculptures, most of the shops are unique. Don’t forget to visit the John Fluevog shoe stores! I can’t remember if there are perfume shops – I don’t normally go there for perfumes. It’s quite close to the st Laurence market and it’s a must visit! Distillery has a number of cool restaurants and art shops as well.

I highly recommend Canoe, please call ahead and reserve a window seat. The view at night – overlooking the city and facing CN tower is magnificent. They have a seasonal tasting menu, using ingredients from one province.

Guerlain, Holt refrew and Hermès is within walking distance from ROM. Very pricey as we have 13% HST. Having recently been to Spain, I find deals are much better in EU.

BTW – TO is only 1.5 hr drive from Niagara Falls. The view is much better than US side. Not to mention the millions of wineries ????????????????????along niagara peninsula, and Niagara-on-the-lake, the most charming town in ON!

Message if you have any questions! And have fun!

Thank you for all of these wonderful suggestions! My friend I’m sharing a room with already booked us at Canoe, and so I’m glad to see that on your list. I do like to do photography and am interested in small art shops and markets, so many of these sound great. No time on this visit for the trip but I have been to the Canadian side of the Falls in the past and you’re quite right about the views there.

Hi Calypso! I live in Toronto and would add the following to what’s already been mentioned… If you’re a fan of Gaudi check out the gorgeous Bar Raval on College St. which is about a ten minute walk northwest of Kensington Market. Downtown there is a very large department store, Hudson’s Bay at Queen St. and Yonge St. with a very large fragrance and cosmetics department on the ground floor. Adjoining it is a Saks and across the street is the Eaton’s Centre where there’s now a Nordstrom. Heading east of Broadview Avenue on Queen Street, is a cool neighbourhood called Riverdale. Interesting buildings, cafes, stores, restaurants on this stretch – the Broadview Hotel has recently been restored. On the west side of Queen Street there are also some great neighbourhoods… I’d recommend west of Bathurst Street and the area around Ossington Avenue. If you can, go to the Evergreen Brickworks on Bayview Ave – it’s another cool place, restored heritage buildings where there’s a farmers market and other events and you’re coming at a time when the fall colours are just starting. North of Bloor Street where you’ll find Holt Renfrew, Hermes, Guerlain and many other designer shops is an area called Yorkville. In addition to boutiques, bars, cafes and restaurants there are some lovely old buildings and houses there. Finally, if you like old architecture head to a neighbourhood called Cabbagetown which is in the downtown east part of the city. It’s the largest continuation of preserved Victorian houses in North America. I lived there until recently – lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants… a very friendly part of town! There’s certainly lots to see here – hope you have fun!

Gosh, thank you, there really IS a lot to do there! I’m staying one extra day (Sunday the 14th) and hope to squeeze as much in as I can. I’m making a reservation for that night with friends at someplace in Yorkville, so we’ll see that area. Might have to play hooky from some conference sessions in order to see more and get some shopping in (all-important)! I also collect Inuit art and want to see some galleries for that too.

SOTD is the new Diptyque Eau de Parfum 34, boulevard Saint Germain. On Day 5 with the 10 ml sample they included with a candle order. I wouldn’t have bothered with this perfume version, as I was not a fan of the original scent at all, but I’m really enjoying it. Kind of perfect for the our current hot days/cool nights.

While its notes of sandalwood, vanilla and pink berries do not seem exactly unique, it’s well balanced and luxe while still feeling casual and I’m truly enjoying it. Sniffing it in the crook of my elbow will get me through a Saturday Ikea run (don’t ask).

I’m ordering a Tokyo candle this weekend (all the Diptyque City candles are available on-line today and tomorrow only) and excited to receive another 10 ml sample of Eau de Parfum 34, boulevard Saint Germain.

This is what makes fragrance so alive and fascinating to me, how different it is for each of us. The EDT was flat and muddy on me, while the EDP is round and enveloping but not dull.

Re-reading this after I posted, I sound like a shill for Diptyque! I’m not, I swear, but I do love their candles. And their exceptionally generous gifts with purchase have worked on me more than once. Okay, I still sound like a shill.

I called the Madison Ave. store but the Tokyo candle is only available in a set of 6! Thanks, but no thanks. I think I will order online as well. One or two of the other perfumes contain freesia — I will stay FAR AWAY from them (Beverly Hills and one other).

    SOTD = Gallivant Tokyo

Heh, spellcheck immediately changed the brand to Gallivanting! I was inspired by Jessica’s review yesterday. I got a surprise manufacturer’s sample of this from LuckyScent (I usually request specific samples). I really like it and it reminds me of another perfume I couldn’t quite place my finger on. Very nice. This line is actually not as inexpensive as one may think but getting a full bottle (30 mL) at under $100 feels good.

A friend shared this video of Andrea and Matteo Bocelli. Get your tissue out —
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ChcR2gKt5WM

Since we’re on a feel good kick, I want to share 3 words that make my mom very happy when I say it on a Saturday morning. No, not “I love you” but rather “What’s our agenda?” which is my way of asking her if she feels up to it, which grocery store does she want to go to. We usually limit ourselves to one because she tends to take her time picking stuff. We’ve gone to more places today but I’ve timed it so that I was able to run errands while she stayed in the car or just outside so she got some Vitamin D. We have one more place to go.

Re: coffee (and I’ve had my 14 oz. half-decaf this morning). Last Thursday, the Aramark-run Starbucks at work gave away reusable hot coffee tumblers but the problem was the barista used regular tops. Thank God I noticed or I could have spilled coffee all over me…or, even worse, scalded myself. I spoke to the manager right away and they stopped giving away the cups because the proper lids were nowhere to be found. Yesterday, I went to a Starbucks near home. Even though I don’t go there often, the baristas know what I like. I decided to ask if they could spare a proper top and sure enough, I got one. It’s a small thing (I could have shelled out $2 to get the cup) but the great attitude made a difference.

SOTD is Natori–the plumminess goes well with autumn.

Halloween week I’ll be going to Texas while my workplace closes for renovations. My husband and I will spend a couple of days in Austin, so I’d love perfume shopping suggestions but would also be happy to meet up with folk if it fits our schedule. We’ll also spend a couple of days visiting my in-laws who are outside the Dallas/Fort Worth area but I suspect I’ll have less free time on those days but I’d still be happy for suggestions.

Hi all, SOTD is a mixture of Le Labo Bergamotte 22, LL Iris 39, Kate Walsh’s Boyfriend, vintage Hermes Amazone EdP, Antonia’s Flowers Tiempe Passate and Fendi’s Asja for a few perfumistas I’m meeting up with tomorrow in downtown SF. I reek! (but SmokeyToes smells nice).

Happy National Coffee day! I had a great workout (glutes/legs), fueled by my favorite home made coffee smoothie, it’s a close dupe of Starbucks low calorie Moka Frappuccino. Recipe is:
    1 cup of coffee
4 tablespoons of vanilla hemp powder (I like Trader Joe’s)
    1 cup of spinach
1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
    1 tablespoon cocoa powder
    1 tablespoon of PB

We are having Pacifica Fog Fest today, I live off the main drag so I’m headed out to check on the festivities, live bands and belly dancers!

Ugh, yesterday I had a scrubber on in the afternoon: Phlur Sandara, from a Sephora sample. It was all dill pickles on me. For five hours. I kept waiting, thinking that surely it would morph into something really special.

I was craving a burger so badly. Still am, actually. ????

The last tenacious scrubber I had was Kate Walsh Boyfriend. It smelled so nice on paper but on my skin it was awful. My trick is to first try oil based makeup remover, followed by dish soap and then unscented lotion. If that doesn’t do it, I break out the Bath and Body Works hand sanitizers. Of course, then you are stuck smelling like that…

It usually works but if there are still traces, I usually double-down and wipe with a make-up remover wipe.

Try charcoal based cleanser. I have a mask / cleanser. Ginger is my sworn enemy – not surprisingly Hermès Twilly didn’t go well on my skin, tried everything, didn’t work, ????????????until the charcoal mask.

I think the last scent I literally scrubbed was something Diamonds from Viktor and Rolf. It was so barnyard on me. And I tried it twice! Just to be sure.

I don’t think I can bear to try the Phlur again. Checked the reviews on Sephora site, and I’m not the only one who got pickled.

Thank you so much for that! I was wondering about the new Phlur as that is the only one I have not tried and now my lemming is squashed. Speaking of pickles, that is exactly what I got with Stash but I kept on wearing it and it really grew into a huge like so much so that I thunked my one ounce bottle in three weeks because I literally wore it every day!

I think it’s usually from sandalwood? I can’t remember if I read that they’re olfactorily related, or if a previous convo here led to that conclusion.

Of course, I could be 100% off on all fronts.

Wearing Amouage Memoir body butter today. Bidding on a partial bottle of vintage L’Heure Bleue. The strange thing in the description is that the seller said that they will empty the bottle unless requested. That offends my perfume sensibilities. I am not paying for just the bottle, yes, I want the perfume.

Is it a stoppered bottle? The seller might not want to risk leakage. But I understand your feelings; I don’t collect empty bottle, either, no matter how pretty.

Yes, it’s a stopper. I have ordered used stopper bottles before with no ill effects. If I win the auction, I will let the seller know that I want the perfume as well. The price right now is too good to pass up.

Hi everyone! Super busy day at work today. I wore 3 different perfumes throughout the day because I just couldn’t get it right. The first was Alien Liquor, then I spritzed some Coach, then finally dug in my purse and found Ambre Narguile. Here comes an AWFUL customer story: we are currently collecting donations to help fight Cancer. I ask every customer if they want to donate, this only requires a yes or no answer. I asked a girl, probably in her late teens, and she says yes. Suddenly she says ” wait, no I don’t, I forgot I don’t like that one girl from school with cancer” then turns to her mom, and says ” remember her?, yeah, I didn’t like her” I didn’t say anything, but I gave her as much change in dimes as I could.

How is the Alien Liquor? I have both Alien and the Cuir version. Just wondering the differences.

And what an awful position to be in regarding your customer’s response. I’m so sorry!

I find the liqour closer to the Cuir, but it’s sharper to me. Cuir, seems much better blended, and richer smelling. If I’m honest, it’s my least favorite of the series, the Taste of Fragrance and Cuir being standouts, imo.

    Hi everyone!

Oh goodness, it’s been ages since I’ve been here. Over time, I’ve received a bunch of emails from some of the perfumista/blogger gang I stay in touch with that some of y’all were wondering where I’ve been, and that has been so heartwarming to hear. I too think of people that I miss hearing from here, and wonder how they are and where their journey has taken them.

It’s a little odd, but there ya go – I have been commando for almost a year. I haven’t posted about that aspect of my journey as I imagine it sorta doesn’t fit with where others are at here. Part of me misses the excitement of exploring new discoveries, keeping up, the desire and promise. I miss that to a certain extent – it’s really fun!

To those who have felt moved to reach out, I truly appreciate it. Sending everyone here love, hugs, hope and best wishes…

Epic today, as I was going through decants trying to figure out what to give away :) I don’t think I want to give this one away! It smells fabulous. It appears to have evaporated down to an oil, and that oil is rich and spicy and forest-y.

I’m excited for Durrells, too! And Poldark. I might have to watch the last few episodes of the latter, as it’s been so long I can’t really remember what went down.

I’m afeared by what our heating bills might look like this winter. We have forced air gas heat, but I’ve thought about getting a bunch of oil radiators and supplementing them with forced air. I’m not sure if that even makes sense, though, or if it would be ridiculously expensive. Both gas and power are astoundingly pricey here (unregulated markets, apparently.) I do really prefer radiant heat, though. Any advice, anyone?

Try and seal any drafts you get from doors and windows. Try and keep the heat at a constant temperature. I set mine at 68 degrees, unless it’s in the single didgets outside. But I think alot of people do 72 degrees, but that’s just to expensive for me.

Same here. We keep it at 66-68 and try to seal all drafts for the same reason…too expensive for us (if I win lotto though my house would be 80 degrees in the winter-LOL!)

I’m leaning toward radiators because they keep a constant temperature and heat surfaces, not just the air (I am not at all a fan of forced air because it functions in just the opposite way.)

Due to medical conditions, I get and stay cold (with numb extremities) at lower temps. But I can’t test which heating system would be less expensive without investing in the radiators first, which presents a conundrum. I’m also not sure if radiators are even feasible to heat 1200 sq ft?

As to blocking leaks, our windows are newer and fairly air tight. The doors (which can be fixed) are a mess, as is the floor. We’re on top of a basement with no subfloot between, which is not going to change. So I’m anticipating a major nightmare, resulting in a move next summer when our lease runs out.

Maybe keep a circulating fan on low when the heat is on.

We do have ceiling fans but I’d think one would only want to employ them if using radiant heat? One thing I hate about forced air is all that hot air blowing.

What I enjoy most about coffee is the aroma, more than the taste.

In the remnants of By Terry Rose Infernale layered with Molton Brown Rosa Absolute, still going strong.

Robin, many thanks for the freebiemeet.

I saw an exotic bird this morning, no doubt on its way down south. Not sure what species but it was black and white with blue accents and an orange beak. It made my day.

Wore Micallef Vanille Orient yesterday for a quick visit to Cleveland Museum of Art, a bit of shopping, and dinner. I’ve tested the Micallef next to Guerlain SDV and there are differences when compared, but worn separately I’d not know which is which.

Today is our first regular-season outing to the symphony ( or Orchestra, I guess – I need to retrain myself with that one) — Bartok and Prokofiev. I’ll either wear Misia or Coromandel. Misia has been my symphony night perfume for a few years as it’s such a great compliment to the music. I’ve thought about switching it up, though, what with now going to hear the Orchestra rather than the Symphony. ;)

Sounds like my perfect weekend, fragrances included! LA Phil celebrates 100 years this season, and Coromandel has been my Disney Hall must-wear too.

Today, we have CicLAvia, with parts of the city open only to bikes and pedestrians from Disney Hall downtown to the Hollywood Bowl, with food pop-ups and arts showcases along the way, culminating in Dudamel and the Phil playing a free concert at the Bowl.

It’s warm and sunny today and I’ll be riding the whole way, so I’m doused in Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie. I love LA!

I love LA, too! I’ve been to Disney hall (back in the Esa Pekka days) but never saw a performance there. I have been to the Hollywood Bowl many times and that experience can’t be beat.

The Cleveland Orchestra actually has its own summer outdoor amphitheater, which is beautiful and serene, but a very different experience from the Hollywood Bowl, as it’s out in the country near (or in?) a national park.

Enjoy the ride and the show! That sounds amazing. And I highly recommend Misia for an evening with Russian Romantics. They have similar emotional intensity for me, making them a perfect pairing.

One little spray, spread onto both arms and applied 90 min before work of Slinky Carnation so that I can wear my glorious custom scent in perfect fall weather. I’ll be in NY on Wed 10/10 if anyone wants to sniff it and hang out with me and Hajusuuri. I could also hang out and go sniffing during the day on Th 11/11. My screen name is my Yahoo address

I’m in Incense Flash, thanks to a wonderful swap partner. Have I said lately that I dearly love the swapmeets? And this site? Well, I do.

Headed to the gym soon…it’s an arms/shoulders day, which is my most challenging workout.

I know I’m late to the party, but we just started watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel this week, and have burned through the first season save the last episode. Hilarious and touching. I love the rat-a-tat-tat dialogue.

    Hello everyone!
    Long time no comment.

This is because the main scent I’ve been enjoying this month is the unbeatable smell of newborn baby!

Our little cub is coming up for a month now.

We went for lunch with our cousins today and I kept it cheap, cheerful, and LT and TS approved in Lolita de Lempicka.

Was my birthday this month so hoping to buy some more perfume once the dust has settled. I am considering a buying a Guerlain oriental, does anyone have any suggestions which one has the best autumn/winter feel?

My vote would be for Guerlain Encens Mythique d’Orient. And pst, if you DON’T buy Encens Mythique, I have it on good authority that one will be up for the upcoming splitmeet :)

Trying to dip into my old decants and forgotten swaps. Yesterday I wore Bruise Violet and today I am in the underrated and underappreciated Amarena (Bvlgaria). I am planning to post samples at the Freebie Meet, so keep visiting. Also, I have two decants I have ready to mail. Comme Des Garçons goes to kpaint, but who on earth was it that expressed an interest in Coqui Perfumes Rosas Frescas? I kept meaning to get back to you and then life got in the way. If you are the person who commented about wanting to try this frag on the day I talked about wearing it, please email me! You were on my mind!! ann dotty eisenberg attagirl Comcast dotty net.

Rochas Man has a coffee note and is well done. The bottle is futuristic and imaginative. Givenchy Very Irresistible Pour Homme and A-Men Pure Coffee are other examples of coffee fragrances amongst surprisingly many others.

Good evening, all! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. We’ve had a busy one filled with birthday party, yardwork, housework etc. Every day is coffee day to me haha. Coffee is life! I look forward to reading through everyone’s comments and seeing if anyone has any coffee scent recommendations.

Concentre d’Orange Verte for no reason this weekend other than it smells good and I love it!
