A low profile

Posted by Robin on 23 August 2018 15 Comments

Since 1999, when the French fashion house released J'adore—the rose and jasmine scent synonymous with a gold gown-clad Charlize Theron—Christian Dior Parfums has kept a low profile. For the brand's first fragrance launch in nearly two decades, perfumer François Demachy has concocted a citrusy bergamot and mandarin orange scent with notes of rose de grasse, sandalwood, and jasmine.

Errr, what?! Even if you leave out the 25 Collection Privee scents, the Cruise collection, a veritable sea of flankers and Miss Dior Cherie –which, rename it what they may, is *not* the original Miss Dior or creditable as a delayed-by-58-years flanker — there is still Dior Addict, absolutely a pillar scent (with 18 flankers), first released in 2002. Low profile?!? Who do they think they’re foolin’?

Saw this in an Italian headline too, so can only assume it comes from a Dior press release. And it’s “a thing”, I see it all the time — companies do NOT like to admit how many pillars they have released, much less how many flankers or series or whatever. It’s the “low profile” that makes this one particularly egregious, as though “Dior” is some unknown in the fragrance category. SAs will have to “introduce” the brand to their consumers, LOL…

Yes, so low profile they’re practically indie… haha. “I knew Dior when they were just a perfume maker in someone’s garage.”

Hahaha OMG that’s spot on. I guess there is more cache in presenting as though working exclusively for 20 years on that one other masterpiece than admitting it’s another in a sea of launches. It’s all about the artistry because being a multi billion dollar company is so passé (there is no profit motivation here, nothing to see, folks. Move along.)

If Basenotes’ records are correct, Dior has launched ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN scents since J’Adore in 1999, an average of one a month. ONE A MONTH!

It takes a special kind of nerve to say that Dior Joy is their first launch in twenty years and that they’ve kept a low profile. Do they really think people are that stupid?

one hundred and sixteen? hahahaha they are so busted. I think someone should do prix de faux entry about this.

Or better, one of the Indy companies should launch a new perfume and call it ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN.

There was the same thing with Estee Lauder recently. I guess you’d have to see the wording of the original press release to know if they really said a whopper, or if the media is so clueless they make a slight whitewash into a big fib.

Low profile but they didn’t say in which sense. I would say it’s so low that they didn’t even care to come up with a new name, bottle and interesting fragrance. Very low profile indeed
