Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid August 2018

Posted by Robin on 11 August 2018 375 Comments

Happy Play in the Sand Day! If you're lucky enough to be at the beach, do play in the sand for the rest of us, as we carry on with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite patch of sand on earth, your favorite beachy fragrance, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I needed to bring out the Sans Adieu (Worth) for a hot humid day. Looks like we will get to 90 degrees where I am today.

    Hello everyone!
Long time reader but just joined as a member.
It’s fairly chilly here in the UK and too inland for beach unfortunately.
I’m wearing Rive Gauche as I’ve always loved it.
Am new to perfume so I am starting with whatever Luca Turin 5stars I can afford!

I must confess Mary Carol I only heard about Je reviens for Worth. Had sans adieu escaped reformulations?

I have terribly fond memories of the summer I spent in Hawaii. I was doing research at UH Manoa, and I spent my weekends either on the beach or in the water learning how to scuba dive. This was the first time I got a serious sunburn (“I’m Indian! I don’t need sunscreen!” is what only stupid, naive people say, and I was both). I spent days afterwards with painful, peeling skin, slathering aloe all over. Never again.

Hawaii is full of all kinds of beautiful or interesting smells! But I’m not big on beachy scents. I think I’ll wear Cédrat Enivrant today. I tried to find my decant yesterday and failed, but I also have a small bottle of it, and that will be much easier to locate. I think it’s my favorite AC.

I am starting the morning off with a dab of Woman in Gold, which is rapidly overtaking Gold Knight in my affections. Despite really, really enjoying both of these, I doubt very much that I’d ever buy a full bottle. I find myself quite resentful of the $295 price tag. At this point, you’d think having to throw down 3 C-notes for a bottle of perfume would no longer faze me, but I am in a little bit of a mood this morning, and it’s not the “Oh, I love this scent so much, it’s a work of art that transports me, and so I gladly hand over my food budget for the month in order to regularly enjoy that incredible olfactory experience!” state of mind that might allow me to purchase a full bottle at a ridiculous price (I’m looking at you, Vero Kern). This morning’s mood is all about how stupidly difficult the smallest tasks are, and how the world would be a much better place if people weren’t so damn greedy.

Whoa, sister. That vent now safely out, I can continue with my weekend.

On a more cheerful front, I am going to hang with some girlfriends this evening for our regular coven, and I am hoping to replicate a restaurant dish I ate recently: burrata with tomato. I had it at a place called Cucina Enoteca in Newport Beach, and it was scrumptious.

I agree with you on the prices. One of the brands I really appreciate, Auphorie, just released 2 new releases at$158 for 30 ml perfume concentration. While I appreciate the high quality ingredients and the thought they put in their creations, this is just crazy. And while I can somewhat understand their pricing – small outfit, expensive ingredients, etc, brands like Amouage, Bond no 9, Clive Christian really should not command such prices!!

Ditto this! Vero Kern breaks my heart with those prices that I just can’t justify. The greed is mind boggling! Paying twice my mortgage in Florida for this mediocre one bedroom rental in Reno. I don’t know how most people make it these day.

I completely agree about your rant. These days I can’t justify paying huge prices for a bottle of perfume, no matter how fabulous it is. I already have a beautiful collection that I enjoy and I still can find fantastic scents that will not make a big hole in my wallet.

I’m ranting alongside you! I’ve slowed way down in trying anything new, discouraged by both the glut of new releases and the apparent greed behind the pricing. I’ve usually avoided sampling anything that is clearly more money than I would ever shell out, but when I do, I’m often left puzzled. At those price points, I’m wanting something *super* amazing.

Meanwhile, I think I’m going to circle back around and try some of the older but still-available l’Artisans… And I’m vaguely regretting some stuff that I blew off over the years (Jo Malone garden collection comes to mind).

I could not agree more. I have an extensive perfume collection and I am trying to just wear what I have and not succumb to buying any more perfumes. I am getting older and older and I would probably have to use up a full bottle each day to use up most of my collection and I don’t see that happening.

I agree with your rant, too! For me, there is simply a dollar amount that I will NOT go above for perfume no matter what. There are plenty of wonderful scents to be had for reasonable prices.

My favorite bit of beach is at Ecola State Park, just north of Cannon Beach, Oregon. It’s an absolutely beautiful little crescent beach with tidepools and haystack rocks, and a looooong, windy drive through a pine forest to get there.

This morning I’m trying 10 Corso Como on one wrist, with Tam Dao on the other wrist as a reference point. 10CC has a bit of dusty leather that Tam Dao doesn’t, and 10CC has something a bit floral that TD doesn’t. More sniffing required. 🙂

Mr. G is off getting chocolate donut holes, and I’m waiting impatiently for them and my second cup of coffee. What’s taking so long???

Will be ignoring my phone until late tonight, because it’s good to unplug! Went to Wawa to get gasoline this morning, used the restroom, guy dropped his phone in the urinal. Sometimes you need to just be.

My favorite beach still has to be on Fire Island, not because the beach itself is unparalleled, but because I love Fire Island. I’m not into beachy scents, though. The closest I come to that is probably Dune, which is cool salt air, rather than sunbathing. I also recall liking Sel de Vetiver. I should get a decant of that one of these days.
Our plan for today was to go with friends to a Yankee/Rangers game, but the weather is looking sketchy for this afternoon so we backed out-being neither a Yankees nor Rangers fan-our friends are Texans-nor a weekend-subway-ride to the Bronx fan.
So plan B is lunch with a different crew and I’m wearing small dots from my LL Ylang roller ball, and still plenty of sillage! I do love this one, though. Hope everyone has a good weekend????

That’s one great thing about living in SF, although we need to wear our parkas to the ball park (especially for night games), it’s rare (if ever) that we get rained out!
I do miss old Yankee stadium though.

This summer has been particularly wet, which has been kind of a bummer, more so because we go to the beach a lot.

My favorite patch is sand, so far, is Harbour Island in the Bahamas, with crystal clear waters, pink sandy beaches and beautiful architecture.
It is very difficult to chose a favorite beachy scent, since I love every single perfume that I have in that category. I would probably go with the last I purchased which is L’artisan Un Air de Bretagne .

Another busy day taking care of personal stuffs. No way to rest this weekend. I am wearing the last 4 drops of Kai perfume oil. Beautiful gardenia that is not overwhelming. THUNK!

I realize it’s no substitute for the physical rest you need, but I hope the
“getting stuff done” will give you some mental relief — the tyranny of “stuff” can be exhausting.

You smell great! My sister was with me when I bought Kai last year, and I knew she loved it so I promptly gave it to her. Win all around: it smelled great on her, she was happy, I was happy! (I’ll eventually get around to getting some more for myself…)

Thank you! Kai is a very nice scent. I always found it very cozy! It has been on my to buy list for a long time. Eventually, I will get some more.
Getting stuff done gives in fact some relief, even though I wish I did not have anything to do, or ignore that things need to be done. At least, the day was good and I am having some rest now.

Un Air de Bretagne is one of the fragrances I loved the best in my samplings a few weeks ago at SFA. I kept the scent strip in an empty journal (kept all of them in there actually for future reference). The dry down is gorgeous…..I can still smell it. The bottle is also perfection as is the name for Bretagne=Brittany.

I truly hope you can squeeze in some down time for peace and relaxation this weekend.

And pl67, you are the THUNK QUEEN 🙂

Un Air de Bretagne is indeed very beautiful, but kind of fleeting on me. It needs to be reapplied few times during the day. It brings me fond memories of good times in my childhood. I would consider a back up bottle later on.

I will try to find some time tomorrow to relax a bit or sleep late to regain some energy.

Ha! You are the THUNK QUEEN! You have been emptying large bottles that have more mls than all the samples together that I have finished. One more sample to go for me and I am done with all of them.

SOTD is Cool Tropic Palm by Comptoir Sud Pacifique, lotus, rose, musk and teak woods. Very sheet and needs reapplication but lovely and light for warm weather. 🙂

My favorite patch of sand is Coquina Beach in Sarasota Fl. White sand beaches and lots of dolphins and other wildlife. Link below.

Yup, it is. It is a lovely town although it’s losing the small-town feel, and it’s links to circus roots are shrinking – I still love it though.
When I first moved there in 1981, you could smell the salt in the air and tropical flowers. It truly was a magical (and quirky) place.

Thank you for the link! I love the beach and this looks like a beautiful place, right up my alley. I’ve bookmarked this so that when we head back down to Florida in late November we can go there. ????????. I’m kind of a sucker for old-school anything, so it really appeals to me.

I was a bit nostalgic the first time we went to Cocoa Beach due to it’s link with “I Dream of Jeannie”. That’s another beach I love!

I’m wearing a dab of AC Philtre Ceylan, because someone (lucas, I think?) was wearing it the other day, and I realized I didn’t remember what it smells like.

While I like swimming, I do not really enjoy spending time on a beach: my skin doesn’t tan but burns easily so applying sunscreen and staying off sun as much as possible comes naturally to me. But if any, Hawaii is the place I prefer spending my “beach allowance” of sun/skin time for. Bronze Goddes is my favorite beach/summer vacation perfume, and I look forward to wearing it the next time I’m in Hawaii.

I was so busy during the week that I didn’t manage to comment here on a single SOTD thread, which was a bit ironic since it was probably the first time ever when I participated in the CP the whole week wearing different perfumes from Atelier Cologne, Annick Goutal and Amouage. Not sure yet what to wear today. Maybe another Amouage?

Wearing a kind of weird one today, the original Biba cologne, probably from the 70’s? Not a lot of info about it but is very potent. It smells like the headshop display stand of 10-for-$1 incense, loud and harsh but not unpleasant. Whispers down to a light frankincense.

    Have a great weekend!

Spending my Saturday playing catch-up since we were traveling most of the week. I did treat myself to one of the Harry’s body washes during my Target run. I chose Shiso and it’s very nice, almost a vetiver scent. Very thick too.

Wearing Eau d’Hadrien for a surprisingly humid desert day – my neighborhood got .75″ of rain last night! Last week someone mentioned that an Eau d’Hadrien body wash exists – might have to try that too.

Haven’t been to the beach in over 20 years for health reasons. Used to love going when I was young though. I have been to various islands over the years but perhaps the most memorable trip was a Windjammer tour. One day we were dropped off on an island that was so tiny there was nothing but the sand and a few sand dunes. That was paradise. Favorite beach scent is vintage Coty Sand and Sable…cheap as chips back in the day but oh so lovely. Replica’s Beach Walk reminds me of it.

My curiosity was peaked so I did some research as to whether there are still Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. Sadly the over 50 year old company went out of business in 2008. I also found this article of the cruise sailboat I had been on for two weeks-

      http://www.fortogden.com/fantommiamiherald.html

It was one of the most memorable vacations I had ever done…..a small number of passengers sailing to various small exotic islands and sleeping on the sailboat for two weeks.

I also remember having my hair long blonde corn-braided with shiny plastic beads on each braid tip by one of the locals…it’s funny the things that come back to you! I kept the braids in my hair when I returned to work and my boss called his wife to tell her to come to the office to see my hair-LOL!

I think the company has been resurrected under a different name. If you and your fiance are ever feeling adventurous I would highly recommend it!!! so much better than a regular cruise.

I’ve been to Cannes and to some exotic beaches in northern Australia, Greece, and Costa Rica, plus Busan, Soth Korea, but my favorite beaches are along the Lake Michigan shore, with its dunes, white sands, and blue water. They have a definite “northern” feel, and they’re bordered by orchards, vineyards, and woods with birches and blue spruce. You have that sense of enjoying to the hilt the very small window of time in the sun in the all-too-brief summer. My best friends from college have a big old farmhouse in a tiny town north of Manistee with a pristine beach on the lake. It has big dunes and you can walk along it for miles. My idea of heaven. And, no, no beach scents for me. Maybe something with sweet grass, though I don’t know what. Here’s a link: https://flic.kr/p/3osWx

Yes, yes! I live close to Lake Michigan and those are my favorite beaches too. Warren Dunes State Park has been one of my favorite places all my life and dune climbing rivals any leg workout. Lake Superior beaches off the Upper Peninsula are wonderful too, especially if you can find some sand rather than stones. I’ll take pine trees over palm trees any day. I keep wishing the Pure Michigan ad council would get John Pegg of Kerosene perfumes to create a Michigan beach/woods scent, he’s a MI native, but it would probably cost too much.

Agree that the Great Lakes are beautiful! Grew up not far from Lake Superior and was walking distance from Lake Michigan when we lived in Milwaukee. My kids would collect handfuls of “sea glass” on our walks and we still have containers of it down in the basement. I’m not quite sure what to do with it, but can’t bring myself to throw it away.

I do like the beach, but am not huge on swimming in the ocean, oddly enough. I love Nor Cal beaches for their wildness and just ocean watching…watching the rhythm of the waves and catching that occasional rogue that is shockingly powerful.

Spent a week in my youth in Bermuda and loved Horseshoe Bay for the rocks and color of the water…and the pink sand.

Favorite beach scent is probably Bronze Goddess layered with plumeria water.

Wearing my new Cap Neroli today! Almost forgot I bought it…it arrived the day I left for CA.

Finished knitting my little shawl for give away. It turned out very nice. On to a hat next.

When I was 15 I went to Bermuda and loved it. Horseshoe Bay I remember well…I always thought Bermuda has the most beautiful beaches.

I am currently working on a hat and scarf set for a friend’s birthday…just came back from Walmart with the wool. Didn’t have the greatest selection this time (I like Lion’s Brand Hometown USA as it is thick and easy to knit and usually comes in a whole slew of colors!) but I was able to find something in her favorite color.

Ah, yes, I forgot about our trip to Bermuda. Those were some gorgeous beaches, though we went in March and it was pretty cold out.
Congrats on your finished knitting project! I have a bag of half finished crocheted scarves lying around…

I’m wearing a spritz of MFK Aqua Universalis Forte from my travel size spray.

My favorite patch of sand – not really sand, but I LOVED the (mostly) untamed area around the Pont du Gard in Provence, where we swam under the bridge. We also stayed in an unusual B&B not far away and the family that owned it cooked us an amazing dinner.

I didn’t get to join in the what’s in your shower poll, and I wanted to put in a plug for a post-shower item: Trader Joe’s Coconut Body Butter. Affordable, moisturizing and smells incredible. Coconut but not overwhelmingly sweet. In the shower we mostly use Dove Men+Care Body Wash in Clean Comfort which smells nicely clean woodsy (as opposed to laundry clean). I have a wee bit of my Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche Body Wash left as well.

    Happy weekend, all!

Have you ever tried straight up organic virgin coconut oil? It smells amazing as well and works beautifully on the body and hair (and it doubles as cooking oil 🙂 !) I also use it to make a homemade all natural deodorant by combining it with baking soda and essential oils like lavender and patchouli.

I have not. I don’t use it as cooking oil because I have found (with friends that use it), that it can make things taste a little coconutty and I don’t always want them to. However, I’m willing to give it a try for body use!

I’m not much of a beach person, maybe that’s why I don’t like beachy perfumes either. Pale, freckly skin and ferocious southern hemisphere sun made for some nasty sunburn when I was a child, the invention of +50 sunblock was a very welcome thing! Despite that, I still enjoyed family picnics at Karitane, a little place just north of Dunedin, where my mother also used to go as a child.

Perfume-free as yet, but I’m excitedly looking forward to an afternoon of sniffing. A new and much larger Mecca has just opened here, and they stock Frederic Malle! And Maison Francis Kurkjian!! And some other things I couldn’t even focus on in my excitement.

My favorite beaches are on the Greek island of Elafonisos, the northern half of California, and Lake Michigan. Calypso did such a great job describing Michigan beaches that I have nothing to add, except that my favorite running spot ever is the Lake Michigan shoreline in Chicago. I don’t know why, but there’s this combination between ultra urban and majestic nature that just slays me.

SOTD is California Reverie. This morning I was sampling MFK Aqua Universalis – I liked the lemon/ fresh musk combo, but not enough for its price tag. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I read the comments late at night this week, and did not respond because it was so late. But for everyone whose heart is heavy or who has been struggling, you have been in my thoughts. And everyone who has been celebrating, thank you for sharing your joy.

Such a nice thing to say, Sistine (your last paragraph). I went to grad school at the U of Chicago and for a while, lived in an apt building with an amazing view of the lake. Not student housing, obviously, but they gave us a break in the rent. Probably not affordable now.

Lemon is so difficult. I love, love Mediterraneo. But it’s so ephemeral and I’m one who doesn’t need 4 hours of time for a perfume.

Lemon/fresh musk combo rec: Chanel No 5 L’eau. Have you worn this yet? I didn’t like it on first testing, but after 3-4 wearings, I fell in love. To me, it’s a sparkling fresh lemon cologne, with abstract florals, and just slightly sweet on the sweet-to-sour scale. I was never a big fan of No 5, but I really like L’eau. It’s a simple, happy perfume.

Last winter here in the US Midwest seemed endless, cold well into May and the trees got their leaves much later than usual. I couldn’t wait for the relentless gray skies to soften and the buds to burst open but now in mid August, I’ve reached my limit of hot and humid weather. Not ready for fall yet but just cooling off would be nice. I’m jaded with my perfume selection, when it’s hot a lot of times I just don’t feel like bothering at all. Wearing En Voyage Go Ask Alice today, that bitter green hemp and patchouli cuts through the stickiness very well, and if I can summon the energy I’ll drag some bottles from the back of the cabinet.

It’s a line I’ve used for 25 years and was recently rebranded to just Bastide. They are well-known for their amber potpourri crystals that have incredible staying power. I’ve had this bottle for 15+ years, and the formulation is beautiful. 🙁 I’m pretty bummed.

If you haven’t tried the line, do so – my favorites are the Fig and also Neroli. And packaging is elegant.

My favorite beaches are those found in northern Wisconsin. The ripple sand and clear water just cannot be beat imo. I have yet to find a beachy scent that works for me though. Olivine Atelier Amongst the Waves perfume oil is the closest I’ve found.
Spent the better part of the day in the car retrieving madtownkid from her 2 weeks at summer camp. I always kind of forget how much I miss them when they are gone, and then I get all teary-eyed and overcome with emotion when I see them again. Currently listening to her and her sister exchange camp stories. We’ve heard some good ones already and I’m sure more will trickle out over the course of the next several months.
SotD was No. 5 Eau Premiere. Perfect for a long car ride and now loads and loads of laundry.

Favorite “beach” is really a rocky inlet that has no name it Oregon. Secluded, brooding, with a cold fast moving creek bravely meeting the pacific with a whole bunch of drama. Rocky islands offshore cloaked in cloud and mist, thunderous, crashing waves, and a lighthouse standing sentinel up on the cliff. Then the sun comes out and Yowza! Just like when the world was brand new! It’s smack dab in the middle of the Cape Perpetua area. 101 passes overhead on a beautiful vintage bridge before disappearing into a short tunnel heading into the heart of darkness. You feel like you’re the last person on earth, with a couple of barking seals to keep you company.

SOTD Omnia, which I will soon be showering off and replacing with Indochine before heading to work.

Ha! No worries, I don’t think she spends too much time thinking about her sexual identity???? I got her at the same shelter I got my last dog from, #petpalanimalshelter, which is a no kill animal shelter in St Pete. They had gotten her from another shelter in central Florida that didn’t have room for her. The best guess is that she’s a red heeler mix of some sort. The thing that blew me away was THREE PEOPLE came and *met* her at the shelter and somehow (!) were able to leave without her!! She’s a people magnet- random people come up to me to pet her, ask about her, take her photo (!)- kinda crazy. I think she might be a Kardashian in disguise ????

SOTD = Trader Joe’s White Truffle Potato Chips

I bought it a few weeks back and eeeek, I am now addicted. Thank goodness I only bought one bag and I rarely go to TJs!

Starting with next week’s CP – Over 100 years old, it was named to evoke a contemplative moment, but to me, it is an uplifting gourmand.

    What do you think?
My brother, SIL and nephew from Oregon were in town last weekend. My SIL had a cast on her right leg from the knee down to stabilize a fractured toe. After lunch on Sunday, my brother said he would like to get coffee and I suggested Starbucks (I know there was a collective gasp from the Portlanders) at the mall on the way home. I have my mom’s handicapped parking tag in my car. Was it ethical for me to use it to benefit my SIL? What would you have done?

PSA: If you are interested in participating in a traveling perfume box, head on over to Lucas’ Chemist in the Bottle blog:

This is probably a bad guess, but is it L’Heure Bleue? Re: parking, if I had someone with me that had trouble walking, I would use the sticker. I wouldn’t use it if I were by myself or if all passengers were able to walk. Hope you enjoyed the visit.

Good guess and you are correct!

I used the tag based on need. My brother thought I should drop off my SIL by the door and then park in a regular spot – this is what I would have done if a I didn’t have the tag.

I would have used the tag, there was a legitimate need by someone in the car.

      TJ’s truffle chips are yumohmygoshsogood.

Hope SIL is mending quickly. Was her broken toe twisted badly out of shape? My doctor just taped my toes together, said they were straight enough so that’s all they needed. Hmph.

Yes it’s ok to use the parking tag! I wish I had one right now.

lillyjo’s guess was my first thought too. Very curious! Any more hints? 😉

It was actually the side of the little toe and probably a bone or two along that side. The bones are supposed to heal by themselves so keeping the foot compressed and immobilized was recommended so that the bones would heal properly. She was on week 5 of 8. They are supposed to be gallivanting for ~ 1 month in Singapore, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam starting late September so she wants to make sure she’s ready by that time.

Could you have asked your doc for a temporary tag? The new ones now have the expiration date punched out of it.

Lillyjo guessed right as you did, too!

A cast makes sense then. Glad your SIL is taking extra care with the foot bones involved.

And you’re right, I should have thought to ask the doc about a temporary parking tag! Eight weeks is a long time to heal.

Yay for L’Heure Bleue! I’ll wear edt tonight, it is delicious.

I’ve been super fortunate to spend time on a lot of beaches all over the place. I will say though, as far as sand goes, you really cannot beat the gulf coast in the US…Pensacola Beach/Destin/Ft. Walton etc. The sand is so white and powdery and the water is generally calm and warm. Another great spot was Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman.

I love beach scents. These days I am loving Fire Island, though today I finished a sample of Mandarine Tout Simplement. It’s pretty but not something I’ll seek out again. I was happy to hear the “THUNK!” of the sample vial hitting the trash lol. I’m trying to make room for other samples I’m wanting.

It’s a rare rainy day here in NM. I’m enjoying it so much. Got some housework done and now catching up on Westworld and reading The Guide.

My parents already have a place on the gulf coast booked for this winter/early spring. I am hoping (????!) that my daughter and I can make it down there and spend a few days over spring break. They have said the same thing about the beaches, and the amount and variety of seashells my mom has collected is amazing! Wisconsin winters can be brutal. It’s not even fall yet and I’m already planning my escape! Lol.

Today I re-created my SOTD with Bronze Goddess eau fraiche, body creme and a bit of the cooling gel on my arms layered with a spray or 3 of Guerlain Terracotta.

We ran out to Home Depot to get a replacement light switch and came away with that (and a new BBQ). Apparently it was such a good deal we had to have it. They are assembling it as well so we just have to pick it up next week. While sitting down with the sales guy, he said “just want to say that you guys smell fantastic”. We all laughed, and my hubby said, well, it will be her, as he gestured to me. The sales guy said to me he “didn’t want to assume it was you”. Kinda made my day!

Reading about everyone’s favorite beaches makes me feel sad that I don’t ever go. I’m just not a beach or water person. As for perfume, I have enjoyed Terracotta and Soliel Blanc. I finally found my long lost sample of Fire Island and like that too. My work sotd was No. 5 L”eau. Now I’m enjoying a dab of vintage Organza. My friend across state visited last week and gifted me a half full mini that she found in antique store for 4 dollars. It’s beautiful, one of my all time favorites. The reformulation is super chemically smelling. I’m so happy to have this mini. Safe to say, it won’t be a THUNK anytime soon.

I love the beach, and I’ve been to some gorgeous tropical beaches, but my favorite beaches are the bracing, cold-water ones, like Ruby Beach or Second Beach in Washington state. Hardly a soul in sight, amazing scenery, the smell of salt, seaweed, and fir trees and the sound of seagulls. Here’s Ruby Beach: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sea_stacks_at_Ruby_Beach,_Washington_coast._Olympic_National_Park.jpg

I have a sample of Kerosene Walk the Sea which I really need to try……

Wild and blustery winter beaches for me, please, rather than tropical sunshiney white sands and sun loungers. And I retain a lurking fondness for wandering about on chilly, out-of-season empty Victorian piers that reach out into the mist.

Fleurs de Sel has some of the salty herby wildflower scents that reminds me a bit of the north norfolk coast on a rare day when the wind has dropped–acres of flat sands or pebbles and ragged low dunes where you can’t tell where the land and sea and sky split.

But I’m wandering in the deep dark woods today with Sumberhouse’s Norne.

Growing up summer equaled beaches. My favorite beaches are in Egypt – both the Red Sea and mediterranean coasts are stunning. The Red Sea is so warm and calm, so that’s the one I like floating afternoons away in. I don’t wear perfume to the beach, but of course associate it with suntan lotion smell.

Greetings! Beaches. I love the beach but my beloved does not so I do not get there as much as I should. I live in Virginia Beach, but I have to travel far from the popular oceanfront to get to a beach that reminds me of the beaches of my childhood. The beaches of Rhode Island are also wonderful to me. I like big rocks and the water is always briskly refreshing. Dune is my favorite beach scent.

I used to love the beach when I was younger. Now, I prefer to go early in the morning or late afternoon to walk the beach and enjoy the view. My favorite beach is not a beach at all. I like to go to Beavertail in Jamestown, RI. There is a historic lighthouse and museum. It has park-like grassy areas. Plus, there are huge craggy bolders that you can climb on to see tidal pools, watch the fishermen and sit to admire the stunning views. My husband and I make a point to visit every summer.

Thought of another beach I really enjoyed…the one on Peter Island -one of the British Virgin Islands. Spent a week there in 1989. At that time there was only one hotel on the entire island so the beach was usually quite isolated and quiet. Ironically, while I was there I met a couple that lived only 20 minutes away from me at home. My camera broke and they were kind enough to lend me theirs which was easy enough to return after the vacation because they lived within walking distance from me in the States.

oh yeah, SOTD is Tendre 😉

Hello everyone! I’ve been MIA lately while out of state for 3 months working a lot of 60-80hr weeks plus commute time. I’ve been so focused on work that I let a lot of the things that I love (like perfume) slip away.

To all of you that posted regularly: thank you. Your posts are a great escape on stressful days, and I appreciate you (and Robin, Kevin, Angela, et all) for every word that you write.

One week from today, life goes back to normal-ish. We just bought a new home, and my husband and kids moved there yesterday (while I was away working) and I can’t wait to experience this new stage of life with them. Over the next few months, I’ll have time to put life back into balance: eating well, enjoying perfume, spending more time with the kids, exercising daily, living healthily, etc. I can’t wait!!

To that end, I’m already planning on immersing myself in more perfume. Any recs for new loves? I love the Chanel Exclusifs, vetiver, iris and slightly-floral-colognes. I’m thinking that I finally need to buy decants of Heure Exquise in EDT and EDP, and try Iris Nazarena? I still haven’t found the perfect vetiver+lemon+flowers frag. Any recs? The common recs (Guerlain Vetiver Pour Elle etc) didn’t work. And where is everyone buying 3-5ml decants these days?

    I’ve missed you all!

Glad you now will have some time for family, new home, perfume, and other good things in life! I don’t much like vetiver, but a gorgeous floral to recommend is Grandiflora Queen of the Night.

I haven’t tried it yet, but Diptyque Vetyverio sounds like it might be worth a try for lemon+vetiver+florals. And for 5-10 ml decants I mostly rely on Surrender to Chance, although it seems they are refocusing their inventory a bit. There are also myriad etsy shops that do decants, but again, selection isn’t vast.

Vetyrverio was good, but I’m looking for something with even more lemon and florals. Isn’t it amazing how many good vetivers exist?

      Welcome back [to normal-ish life]!

Have you tried already Les Eaux de Chanel? I think it’s a perfect fit for your “slightly-floral-colognes” preference. My most recent iris loves are Masque L’Attesa, Atelier Cologne Iris Rebel and Houbigant Iris des Champs.

I’ve got to try ALL of those.

I have been trying to resist the urge to test Les Eaux de Chanel since they are so fleeting. I hate to fall in love with something that doesn’t last– but then, if it’s a real beauty, it might be worth it?

Added L’Attesa, Iris Rebel and Iris des Champs to the list. I hadn’t read much about that Houbigant yet.

Welcome back, gville. Oh don’t buy decants of Heure Exquise. I will hook you up. When you’re settled at your new home, just send me an email with your new address. It may take some time as I have a backlog of mailings to do.

Kafka just reviewed Masque Hemingway – for Vetiver lovers: (I have not tried it myself)

Hajusuuri, I will only take you up on that if you let me BUY the decants from you. If so, that would be great.

And yea, that Hemingway sounds right up my alley. Have you tried any of the other Masque frags? What’s your thoughts on the line? I haven’t tried any yet.

And have you tried Iris Nazarena? I’m interested in your feelings on it, since we often like the same stuff.

I woke up much too early this morning, and just as I was drifting back to sleep, my electric toothbrush suddenly came to life … in the cabinet, all by itself. Scared the dickens out of me, because the cabinet is on the other side of the wall where our alarm system control panel is, and all sorts of dire thoughts occurred to me (is someone disabling our alarm? is that what the carbon monoxide alarm sounds like? and so on). Finally realized it was the toothbrush handle vibrating … and then I couldn’t get it to stop!

Anyway, after that challenge I was thoroughly awake, so I’m challenging myself further by sampling ELDO Rien. Whoa baby. Different. I think I like it. I think I’ll like it even more this fall. Wow.

Lurking as usual, but I love beaches so much had to comment.

SOTD is Diorissimo. Not a beach scent at all. For me, the scent of the water, air and sand is enough (plus the strongest sunblock I can find.)

I spent summers on Cape Cod and love the beaches in Eastham, especially bay side from Thumpertown to Campground, as well as ocean side’s Nauset Beach. In California, fave beach is Stinson, north of San Fran. Whitecrest beach in Truro is also lovely.

When I’m near a beach the light changes, the air softens, and I relax. These days, post skin cancer, I limit direct sun, wear UPF beach tights and rashguards and big hats, tons of sunscreen – but still go to the beach.

We have a place with a private beach in Maine. It’s sand, fairly unusual – many beaches in ME are rocky. Beautiful in a stark, remote, chilly way. The water is too cold for swimming, IMO.

Love all the beach stories. Thanks folks!

It’s not because it’s technically two different weeks. Tuesday through Tuesday. There is a law, I think that says you have to have 8 or 10 hours between shifts that gets broken alot. Especially 4th quarter. No one (management ) doesn’t care.

As long as you get paid overtime above 40/week (and no, they cannot flip-flop on what counts as a work-week), it’s not illegal (the no 8 hours between shifts) as there are no federal law against this but the rules may be different by state. Also, for certain jobs, like truck drivers, I think there are or they are pushing for a mandatory break once you’ve worked x number of hours.

I made cookies today and am lazing around watching the PGA Championship. It makes me embarrassed to know that I hit driver from 125 yards and Tiger hits a sand wedge. I don’t have a single favorite beach. I do have favorite spots by the water for various reasons.

My favorite place to listen to breaking ocean waves is Barnegat Inlet. Being able to climb to the top of Barnegat Light right there is a bonus… fantastic view up there by the Fresnel lens!

My favorite beachside place to walk and people watch is the Atlantic City boardwalk or the Ocean City boardwalk. I don’t even have to go in the casinos in AC if I don’t want to.

And for favorite touristy thing to do, driving on the beach at Daytona Beach.

Oh, an enabler’s pin goes to therabbitsflower, for the heads up about Lush Rose Jam now being permanent. I went and got some yesterday. ????

Bear, if your computer is running Windows 10, you DO have emojis! It was part of a package 2 or 3 upgrades ago to the OS. All you have to do to access them is hold down the “Windows” key and the period key at the same time. Viola! Emoji fun!

Koyel, if you are wondering why one of my cats is called Teflon, the short story is that none of the other names we considered stuck. ????

SOTD = Cristalle EdT, from the sample stash. Wore this yesterday and today to help deal with the return of the muggies. More muggies in the forecast this week. Bleah.

Oops, forgot…favorite beaches are definitely on Kauai, preferably in late September, when it’s still warm, but the trade winds and the water are cool. Any beach there is fine, except for Poipu, since that one gets crowded.
