An astronomical price tag

Posted by Robin on 2 August 2018 11 Comments

The new Iris Gris, renamed L’Iris de Fath, will be released in September. Because of the large quantities of pure iris used in the formula, the perfume has an astronomical price tag. “Some people think that the iris smell in perfume comes from the flower,” Cervi says. “But we use the root—you grow it for three years and then dry it for three years.” A single 30 milliliter (1 ounce) bottle will cost €1,470 ($1,712), and just 150 bottles will be made a year.

Maybe not the same but extraordinarily beautiful and the highest price is $101 for 10 grams…it wears like a soft solid perfume-

I am pretty sure even the original would not sway me…the things I have tried over the years that purport to smell like Iris Gris just aren’t all that appealing to me. I am pretty sure it’s mythical / cult status is due to Luca Turin, so I remind myself that I have very different tastes than Luca Turin 🙂

Just wonder how many of us have very different tastes than Luca Turin. ????. That’s why I lost my interest in the Guide, even though as a fun reading it is always good. ????

I enjoy the reading anyway, and I learn things!

Instead of straight star ratings for perfume it would interesting to tweak it a little to see a value for money rating. I wonder if a lot of exclusive and niche scents would score low and mainstream would come up. Or would it all just average out.

But it’s hard to rank “enjoyment value”. I’d give Sensuous a huge “value for money” rating, but if I was on a really limited budget, I might rather spend the same amount on a 15 ml Hermessence, which has very little “value for money” other than it really, really pleases me.

I think you’d almost have to do in perfume categories, so you might take all the iris perfumes , rank them according to how they smell (regardless of $$$) and then decide that the $10 three star iris is better value than the $500 three star…..arggggh, who could be bothered!!!There are enough chores in life without adding to them.

I know orris butter is brohibitively expensive – I’ve only owned a 5% solution to experience it – but they can’t justify their priving because of it.

But maybe they use the same tariff and markeup for their perfumes as everyone else.

It’s just that ordinary releases are made very, very cheap.
