Wednesday scent of the day 7/25

Posted by Robin on 25 July 2018 219 Comments

Happy Hump Day! It's also Carousel Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I was in the mood for flowers, so I'm in Vilhelm Parfumerie Don't Tell Jasmine, mostly because it's the first one I noticed when I went looking for flowers.

Reminder: on 7/27 we'll celebrate the Buck Moon...pick your poison for the full moon tonight.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Gorgeous image Robin!

Vanilla bean, patchouli and rose essential oil blend slathered all over with two spritzes of Greylocke. I am using and enjoying my essential oils as well.

Greylocke is a staple for sure. I would consider replacing it once it is gone but there are too many other lovelies to wear so it would be a very very long time before I do that!!! Will still keep wearing it though because this summer is all about wearing what I like/love lavishly because you never know what tomorrow will bring and I don’t want to save anything anymore.

Do you have a long “to buy list”? Mine is really huge and probably I will lose my interest in many of them after so many year.

Funny story!!! For as long as I can remember I kept a “to buy list” starting when I was a child. As an adult I kept the list in my yearly date book and every year it basically changed(never let it go beyond 10 perfumes) This year I wrote it in pencil and a few months ago I erased it. My very lofty goal is to focus on what I have and not what I want…let’s see how long I can last-LOL!!!!!

          • nicolasix says:
            25 July 2018 at 11:33 am

My to-buy list isn’t very long, but a couple of things have been on it for years and I . . . seem to be doing just fine without them. I’m starting to think that snapping up whatever I’m in love with at the moment is a better strategy than The List.

I would agree. Once you get your collection down to a size that you are comfortable with then buy what you really love and just wear it!! Like Bombay Bling????

          25 July 2018 at 10:40 am

I need to go thru my list. Probably at this point I can reduce it like yours to a minimum. I hope Greylocke can eventually make it to you!

    Beautiful picture Robin!

In Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia. I have tried it so many times and I definitely do not like it. The remaining 4ml from the mini have been put aside and will eventually end up in another home where it can be more appreciate it. For me it is another perfume gone.

Having the End of the Fiscal Year lunch today at work. At least for good 2 hours we can relax some, before going back to the madness we are living here lately.

Early in the spring I very briefly fell in love with freesia and acquired decants of both English Pear and Freesia and Diptyque’s Ofresia. Now (mere months later) I find them both very sweet and dull. But for a week or two they smelled perfect. It’s all such a mystery . . .

It is indeed a mystery! I have fallen in love with perfumes just to find out weeks or months later, that they are a complete failure for me. That is good when you only have samples, but when you get full bottles of those…

Well, I think you smell nice! I guess I’m in the minority of liking this one, lol-it’s my go-to work meeting scent since it’s more of a background scent and thoroughly inoffensive IMO, though I’ve had it noticed by coworkers (positively) so maybe not so background as I think.

It is definitely an office friendly scent. It does not have much projection and has a good longevity. I still can smell it on my skin. Overall, I think is a nice scent, just not for me.
Let me know if you would like to take it from me. ????

Awww, that’s so sweet of you to offer, but I think my 30ml bottle is all I’ll ever need of it. It’s also one I likely wouldn’t feel the need to replace if I ever finish it.

I like English Pear & Freesia but prefer it in spring. A co-worker at my previous place used to wear it a lot, and I loved it on her but didn’t wear too often myself. Now we do not work together any longer but I still wear it just now and then.

Morning, early birds! I’ve been getting up earlier and earlier this summer. It’s not a bad thing, but it’s weird, since I have for as long as I can remember been on something like a midnight to eight sleep shift. Now I’m getting sleepy earlier (around 10 pm), and waking up just before 6.

It’s still early enough that it isn’t scorching, only very warm. It is expected to be a ridiculous 113F today. I’ve spritzed on some Nu Green, in the hopes that – someday soon – it will be cooler.

I’m in Moscow Mule by Juliette Has a Gun today. It’s supposed to smell like the components of the drink (vodka, ginger beer and lime), but I don’t think that’s what I’m smelling. My scent vocabulary is sadly lacking, so I can’t describe what I *am* smelling, but I don’t think it’s lime. . . I like it though, and I guess that’s really what matters :-)

I’m in an unknown today, sent to me by someone (sadly don’t remember) some time ago (sadly don’t remember). I don’t think the sample came labeled (or perhaps I lost it), but vial is distinctive: the black cap has an unusual applicator. It is like a flexible wand, with a tiny loop on the end with a bar through the center — looks sort of like a bubble wand. (For all I know, I’m wearing liquid soap!!) It is a light scent with non-rooty iris, I think.

If any of my benefactors recognizes this, and knows what the juice inside might be, please do let me know. Thanks in advance, and Happy Humpday to all.

      what colour is the juice?

I’m in the last of my D600 sample and loving it. It’s one sample I’m sad to see go.

Just tomorrow, then regular time Friday. Our biggest customer is in town and I have to pick up breakfast by 6:30 and have it set up by 7:15. Then lunch, then afternoon snacks….then clean up lol. So I’m not getting out until almost 5. But the good news is that I have enough hours in that I’ll only have to work half a day Friday. :)

Happy Wednesday to all of my scented friends! It’s been a while since I have been able to post. Hope everyone is well and staying cool this summer. Temps have been reaching 100 degress and above here in Houston. Because of the heat, I have been trying to keep it light and simple. My SOTD is Sensuous Nude by Estee Lauder. Really nice scent.
PSA: If you go to the Estee Lauder Website, this scent has been marked down 50%. I purchased a few days ago and received it yesterday. I am not affliated with the company in any way…just wanted to share. It for a limited time, so if you are interested…..

SOTD yesterday and this morning is Sedona Sweet Grass from Providence Perfume Company. This is a brand new scent in the line–so new, in fact, that it is not listed on the website, except that it is now one of the samples in the Light Collection. I visited PPC on 07/14 and had a very nice conversation with Charna.

She asked me about my scent preferences, and I told her that I don’t care for tobacco notes, that I am not a fan of BWFs, overly sweet scents or gourmands, and that too much jasmine tends to give me a headache. She suggested I probably wouldn’t care for Tabac Citron or Hindu Honeysuckle, although she did suggest I at least sniff Provanilla on a scent strip, which I did, although it was not “me”. She did mention that she probably will not be able to make Provanilla any more due to the worldwide shortage of vanilla, which has driven up the prices and made it hard to get sufficient quantities of perfumery-grade vanilla, so if you have been considering buying this one, you might not want to delay much longer.

It took me quite a while to decide on a scent, as I think the description and notes for Sedona Sweet Grass threw me off a little. I don’t remember the exact wording, but it mentioned smoke and/or fire, so I was expecting a heavier, darker scent than what I actually get from SSG. Now, I actually love dark, rich scents, but seldom wear them because I live in such a hot, humid climate which tends to amp up dark notes to asphyxiation level. SSG, however, really is a light smoky scent.

I am afraid I am not very good at describing perfumes, but what I get from SSG is the feeling that I have walked into a room where someone has just finished burning some fragrant grasses or herbs (not wood, resin, or charcoal), but where nothing is actually burning right now. It is definitely not a typical resinous incense scent. I liked several others very much, but finally decided on SSG for a FB purchase because it really doesn’t smell like anything else in my considerable collection, although I also got a 5 ml size of Moss Gown. Charna threw in sample vials of Love-in-a-Mist, Heart of Darkness, and Branch & Vine, which I have been enjoying testing out.

I am curious about Heart of Darkness for the name alone. Have you sampled that one yet? The vanilla shortage is the reason why I make my own Vanilla bean oil to satisfy my cravings. The oils from Eden Botanicals were becoming too expensive.

Only one tiny dab. I didn’t even realize I had it until I was packing up for the return flight. Charna had wrapped my bottles in bubble wrap for protection, but I decided to unwrap them to fit them into my 1 quart plastic bag in my carry-on. The sample of HoD was wrapped up with the Moss Gown. I was afraid the perfume bottles would get broken in a checked bag, no matter how well they were padded. Apparently my fears were well-placed, as a couple of items in one bag did get broken, although they were inexpensive items easily replaced, so no great loss.

It is one of my all time favorite reads (Joseph Conrad) so I peaked at the sight and looked at the notes…sounds deep and heavy….I look forward to hearing what you have to say when and if you give it more skin time.

Rodin 3 EDT is my SOTD. I was browsing b-glowing’s sale items yesterday and saw this at $85 and remembered I have a 10ml decant that I only dabbed on when I first got it months ago. I went for the larger decant because I love the original Rodin perfume. This one isn’t love, and I’ll have to wear it more before I decide if it goes up for swap. It’s a fresh perfumey perfume, light and pleasant and office friendly. It isn’t super exciting though. In my opinion the two perfumes they’ve put out after the original don’t even come close to the first (Bis and 3).

Lovely photo! I’m commando at the moment, drinking coffee to which I somehow forgot to add cream…????

Lazy day yesterday at the lake. Found a little shaded enclave right at waters edge, but the path to the parking area ran right past it which was a pain as some people have no boundaries. Stepped all over my stuff and let their dogs rush T-Rex, who was minding her own business, busy chasing waves, and didn’t like the interruption. Going to head out to Fallen Leaf Lake today, which is smaller and less trafficked. Not sure what perfume today, but planning on giving VT a rest.

Another great night’s sleep. I’m really appreciating this because it’s been a long, long time since I slept this well. I find myself getting ready to hit the hay at sundown and get up at first light- completely opposite to my sleep pattern prior to living full time in the van. Reno will be too hot in August, so I will have to find housing. Hoping September and October will be cool enough to get back in the van full time. Looking forward to some ghost town exploration as well!

Enjoy the quieter lake! Although, it makes me cringe. The road we took to Fallen Leaf kind of freaked me out it was so narrow. My poor husband had to drive very patiently. I kept thinking we’d go off the road and into the lake.

LizzieB, funny you should mention that road…! I drove it the other day and holy Krakatoa Batman! Two way traffic on a one lane road with a 90* drop into the lake!! I white knuckled it and three people said *unkind* things as I passed them! ???? Yes, today I was parked in the public lot by the campground. I’ll let you know about Reno. I’m getting mixed messages from a lot of people from “horrendous drug and homeless issues” to “great spot to access a ton of outdoor stuff without having to pay California taxes/prices!” We shall see! ✌????

I’m finally getting around to trying Hermes Galop – wow this is beautiful. I often dislike leather in perfume but this is a soft leather that blends so nicely with the other notes. If only it came in smaller bottles or could found at the discounters! I’ll just have to enjoy my decant as long as it lasts.

I’m in OJ Champaca which is a summer comfort scent for me, though I haven’t craved it much lately, but it’s a nice calming scent for another rainy day.
In other news, tested a couple of samples last night: NV Niral and B Fazzolari Fontevraud. Niral didn’t wow me and seemed like they took Mohur and added a dash of violet for the lipstick effect and called it a day. It kind of bored me and there were shadows of woody ambers lurking in the base which grate on me.
The BF was interesting and full of contrasts. Kind of a tropical fruit+goth thing going on. Definitely need to spend more time with it but I liked it!

Actually, I got distracted and went for a parallel testing of a couple of Narciso Rodriguez perfumes (I have no idea how “civilians” make them apart – other than by the color and shape of the bottle but even then it’s all so mixed up!). But tonight I’ll do a couple of Exclusives, for which I never went beyond samples. It’s kind of pointless at this time since those that I have are discontinued EdTs, so even if I like them, I won’t be able to get them and will need to test the EdP. But at least if I still don’t like them, I’ll pass them onto somebody who’ll finish them before they go off.

Robin, that photo has brought up such strong memories for me. It’s the Mackenzie Basin between Mt Dobson and Lake Tekapo and not far from where I was born. My dad was the country doctor and that area was part of his practice and we travlled through it all the time, on gravel roads with not another person in sight. The lupins are incredible but the real scent is clover, it hangs on the air. In winter we skiied on those hills. Gosh. I set one of my novels in that location with that scene in mind. Will join you in flowers today: lakeland flora again.

Oh how wonderful, so glad you posted!

So why is it so sparsely populated when it is so gorgeous?? Is it a protected area?

It was very poor farm land and miles from anywhere, so originally it was carved up into very large (size-wise) sheep farms as it was ideal for merino sheep. Now, environmentalists are fighting to protect the area from intense dairy farming and irrigation. That would turn this very beautiful, arid landscape into green paddocks and destroy the waterways of unique braided rivers. These days it’s on the main tourist route to Mt Cook and Queenstown…so lots of people. I was born about 15 miles from this photo in a place called Fairlie. The Mackenzie ( named after a sheep rustler ) is so beautiful.

Hi everyone, I’m just checking in. Still in the hospital after my hip surgery last week. I was supposed to be transferred before now but there have been some bureaucratic delays. Fortunately I have good care here. No perfume though and I miss it. Robin, I too love that moon picture. Carousel Day sounds fun, too.

Trying to use up my samples so today is Aftelier Curious. A big menthol note at first, and then hay, tobacco, and a musk that is giving me a headache. It’s a scrubber for me.

All the Afteliers were pretty much meh or scrubbers for me…and zippo longevity.

Still working on the Arquiste sample set, so I’m in the last of L’Etrog today, with a little Clementine California to soften it up.

I slept very poorly last night, so walked for 30min this morning and decided to take the day off from the gym. I’ve had a perfect attendance record for weeks now, so I’m only feeling a little guilty.

Mostly gloomy and definitely squishy weather today. I saw some very large mushrooms and/or toadstools growing in a neighbor’s lawn today. ????

SOTD = back in Dior Poison Girl EdT. Yeah, I’m a little embarrassed to admit it. ???? But the far drydown smelled so darn good yesterday! I’d say that Poison Girl would be a good example of a “Guilty Pleasure” perfume.

Stella for me, but I think I’ve become anosmic to it, which would be unfortunate. Errands. Car servicing, stopping to get some packing supplies…and Costco! Costco is exotic to me. But I never feel compelled to join.

A cool 100F here. My sister has been opening doors and windows in the evening while here, but I may tell her no tonight. I think we will keep AC on.

I think the vitamin infused sparkling water I bought has been keeping me awake. Green tea and B vitamins. Will avoid it in the evening from now on.

So very hot in my apartment today. Gave myself a good dousing of AG Vetiver cologne as soon as I walked in the door and that freshened me up some…
Vetiver is for me what citrus is for many others, the perfect antidote to oppressive heat. Now that I’m planted in front of a fan, topped it up with the gorgeous Sycomore.

My SOTE is eau d’Hadrien, about 10+- sprays to combat the heat.

We’ve been trying to do super clean eating and cut down on alcohol for the last few weeks in an effort to lose a few pounds before my niece and her family arrive for a visit. It’s very hard being good I must say, but I do feel better. It’s very easy to go grab a handful of this or that after dinner for a snack, but when you are more mindful of what you are doing, it makes a difference. Small changes.

Very late to the party. SOTD was the office friendly Amazing Grace. SOTE is Bomblay Bling on one hand (not feeling it so much tonight) and Ashoka on the other (getting a nice, soft leather with some fig). My order on the Pacifica scents is a mixed bag. They were unable to get any Spanish Amber or Tibetan Mountain Temple. Thank goodness there are plenty of good ambers and I already have TMT. They are going to send me two Mediterranean Figs, so not bad in the end.

All of the Graces are excellent for office….I have worn quite a few of them over the years.

Ack! What a shame about the Pacificas! I guess die hard fans are now scrambling to pick up the remains of stock. I am sure the prices will triple on ebay now.
