Tuesday scent of the day 7/17

Posted by Robin on 17 July 2018 250 Comments

Happy Tuesday and happy World Emoji Day ????????????. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: commando, again. I will make up for it when I get home on Thursday.

Reminder: on 7/20 we're having a Cocktail Party...tell us about your favorite cocktail (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), provide a recipe if you like, and wear a perfume that would complement your choice. It doesn't have to be a boozy fragrance!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

For public service, I’ll host Hermessence splits, 3-4 sets depending upon interest.

P.S. Donatella looks the other way when you host splits and including splits in the Damage Poll is subjective so it is a win-win for all.

Good morning! I love the cocktail project because I love really great cocktails, and they always remind me of perfume. I think they even have similar structure. Fancy bartenders create a “top note” by putting something near the top of the glass so that you smell it before you drink it (hence the twist of lemon; or, my ex-bartender husband taught me the trick of slapping a leaf of mint so that the smell hovers over the glass.) But then I also think to be truly great a cocktail needs some exciting flavors that you taste when you start to drink it (heart notes), but also a really balanced and delicious base so once the novelty of that first sip wear off you’re still drinking happily.

Do I try to engage bartenders on this topic with mixed success? You bet I do.

I had a wonderful cocktail this weekend called a carrot juice mimosa – ingredients carrot-apple-ginger juice, sparkling wine, aquavit, bolivar bitters, and a teeny tiny teeny carrot with the greens sticking out the top of the glass. So, I am wearing Providence Perfumes Eva Luna.

Good AM! Sooo muggy and the lack of aircon in my subway car has left me a sweaty mess already. Luckily I smell fresh in JM English Pear & Freesia. I’m smelling ambrette in it today which I hadn’t noticed really. Maybe my recent wearings of PdE Le Cri… and LL Ambrette 9 has have helped me identify this note. Stay cool (or warm) NST peeps!

I really liked Ella when I dabbed it on last night. It sort of reminds me of Superstitious, but more sultry green, which I like. I wish that they had smaller bottles than the 100ml, but I got a small decant so I can spray and may end up with it regardless!

I also thought it was similar to the FM, but less assertive and more languid. Yeah, that 100ml is too much. I’ve had my 5 ml decant since last summer and still have about 3ml left- can’t imagine with I’d do with that bucketful.

Fairly common. It’s happened a few times just in the last week! I usually get out at the next stop and hop to an air conditioned car if I have many stops on my ride. It was crowded this am so I just stayed.

I am wearing Bat from my Zoologist discovery set. Just three sprays, since the notes sounded really funky. But I am quite happy with it. When I first put it on, I really got the earth notes, and it reminded me briefly of Demeter Earth. Now however I am really noticing the fig and it is quite a wearable fig. I am always looking for a wearable fig, just as I am looking for a wearable vanilla. No luck with the vanilla, but Bat will be added to my (short) list of figs that I actually like.

Really?? I tried the Guerlain Bois d’Armenie for the first time ever this spring when I went to Paris, and I loved it so much I got a travel spray. Wow, the original must’ve been marvelous if the reformulation is so much worse and is still so splendid.

You can try adding and removing it and leaving it in your LuckyScent cart; a bot may come along and offer you discount. I think this was how I got 20% off Mohur Extrait !!!!!!!!!

I also check to see what GWP is available and if there’s something that is attractive, I bite the bullet, get the GWP and pay the shipping since you can only use one code per order.

KellyC, most of the ones at the discounters are very similar to each other. Mostly fruity and fleeting. The best ones imo are Born in Paradise, which is sweet, without the fruit, and Cherries in the air, which is cherry, but more grown up. Also Ibiza Hippie was really good, but I can’t remember why, LOL, maybe CM8 remembers?

Ibiza had pear , lichee, nutmeg, hyacinth and cranberry notes…yes, quite good. As you know I have every single bottle since 1994 and a mini of the first one , Chiffon Sorbet (1993) all drained, though. However, the eldest marzipan still buys one a year to keep up tradition and plans on taking over the collection once she gets her own place. Yes, they are very fruity and vary in their longevity. We have the latest which is mini Marzipan’s summer scent and it smells really good on her…like a salted watermelon….I prefer the original older versions from the 1990s (like Un Ete en Provence, Jardin Soleil) because the bottles were nicer and the ingredients were better (oakmoss, sandalwood, plum, passionfruit….pre- IFRA regs)…my favorite of the recent offerings is definitely Cherries in the Air.

Kelly Not to tempt you BUT….I am fairly certain that fragrancenet is selling Taj for $18.99 for a one ounce bottle…that is the other great thing about the Escadas…they come in 1oz sizes as well as mini sprays/rollers and mini dabbers.

And yes, Rockin’ Rio is great too but I am not sure how readily available it is…I looked to see if some of the older ones are available and most are out of stock at the online discounters.

I have a bottle of the 2011 Rockin’ Rio. It’s been a while since I’ve smelled it, but I think it had a pineapple note in it? And it was/is sweet and fruity.

Right now, I am amazed at how much I have spent with Prime Day and a little embarrassed. I spent almost $250 and none of it on perfume. Some of it was my dad’s birthday gift and a bag of puppy food but still. Good thing that 70% was covered by stock piled gift cards. I am wearing Diorling today, even though I want to wear vintage Bal. Vintage Bal isn’t work safe though.

The biggest part of mine were 2 Kindle Fires that I had my eye on. I’m sure that the people who don’t participate in Prime Day are calling us fools. But when your tablet is about to die and your puppy needs food, I am not so much of a fool for waiting on a deal.

Not sure if it was a good thing or not I finally got in to the Prime Day deals. I pulled the trigger on a splurge I’d been eyeing for a while. A Dyson cordless vacuum… Sad that I’m buying it mainly so I’m just plain better about keeping our place free of cat hair. I’m planning to do a quick run every day.

Not sad at all. You are putting a viable system (that is, easier to do) in place to create a tidier environment. In this world of just too much to do, I think one has to – where possible – make it easy to get some of that stuff done.

Yesterday they arrested a man for the murder of the missing woman here in Houston, my friend’s sister. But they still don’t have her body. This is a somewhat mixed development for the family, and my friend said she really doesn’t know how to feel right now.
We are also having horrendous weather with high heat (forecast today 97), humidity, and bad air due to the Saharan dust cloud that has blown this way from Africa.

I brought up the two Berdoues and placed them in my bedroom to be part of our USE IT UP campaign..guess what? Middle Marzipan confiscated both bottles and is wearing them layered and it smells so good on her.

I am continuing in my week of wear whatever you want, for whatever reason you want. ;) I’m in Habit Rouge edt and loving it.

I love cocktails and beer so much. Not so much for the actual effect, I just think they’re sooo tasty. Also, so much of my work and personal social activities revolve around drinking cocktails or beer (lots of great breweries in ABQ).

All of that being said, I’m joining Ede in no alcohol for 30 days. A friend and I are doing it together. I am mainly doing it because I am trying to shed a last 10 pounds and though I eat healthy, I know alcohol adds a lot of empty calories and I think it’s holding me back some. I just started yesterday since I knew I had a concert Sunday night. Wish me luck. I will participate Friday in some way, though!

Alcohol also lowered your inhibitions which makes you eat more (at least this was always the case for me). I think it’s a good idea to give it up temporarily if you are trying to shed some weight.

SotM = drydown of last night’s Portrait of a Lady sample

PoaL, I swoon for you. This morning I delayed putting on more scent, did not want to break the spell.

Later I’ll wear a dab from a sample of Hwyl.
Too many untested samples sitting on my desk.
    Time to Use It Up.

Yep, you were right! PoaL lives up to its reputation.

Oddly, it reminds me of one of the old Crabtree & Evelyn scents, maybe Nantucket Briar.

PSA for EBay. $25 off a $119 or more purchase with code PRIMO119. No affiliation. You can put multiple items in your cart to get to that amount. Just sayin’.

I am comparing Venise to 1932 EDT today. They are by no means exactly the same but they have the same vibe to me. I shall see how the drydown goes.

Back from dry, dry Colorado to the high humidity and blazing heat of home. I could not decide what to wear, so I actually tried some of my daughter’s Rosebud & Violet EDT from H&M that cost $3. It’s actually not bad; very dry, a tiny bit sweet.

Other sister just arrived from So Cal. She left in the wee hours to avoid the heat but got caught up in the stoppage resulting from a triple big rig crash. Added 1.5 hours to her drive. She’ll be napping on the couch the rest of the day…

I got, I got, I got….BANG…Fireworks…DNA….The crowd roars…Kendrick!!! Massive! What an experience! First, totally scary being in a mob of 16000 people and needing to clear my brain of thoughts of stampedes and being trampelled, constant pushing, jolting. Freezing cold..so cold. But a mass of energy, the jumping and beat so loud and strong that the fabric on my trousers literally began to ripple. Incredible. Kendrick was a small figure up on stage and yet he held the room, his presence was powerful and the way he held the audience made me wonder about the hold of great leaders, orators or religious leaders…it was great but kind of disturbing too. The music was brilliant. Loved it. Really loved it . He slayed it. Humble was terrific. But man, big concerts and crowds are not for me? I didn’t see a single person my age and I reckon I was at least 30/40 years older than most people. We came out and walked home up the hill, through the pitch black graveyard with the city lights below, in the freezing cold and it was a magical end to an amazing night. Perfume: A la Nuit…great stuff for a dance!

My ears were ringing (despite earplugs) and my legs were wobbly.it was the only time i have been to a big concert like that. If i had known I was going when i booked the tickets I would have got a seat in the stand and looked down on the mosh pit rather than being in the middle of it. Cool though. Never again!

Commando twins with Robin. World Emoji Day? Wow. Who’d a thunk it?

Lazy day today, recovering from a winning night at work, but might spritz a bit of Vetiver Tonka later. I have a travel size that’s about half gone which would work well for the unofficial Use It Up project.

Ever since the fires started around here a few weeks ago, my sinuses have just been a hot mess. Constantly battling ocular migraine and the arid quality of the air here has got my whole respiratory tract in an uproar. Might be good that my fumes are all in storage because I haven’t felt inclined to wear much lately. I’ll be glad to move on down the road this week!

Happy Tuesday, still Mondays ugly little sister to me…????

    Scent twins with Robin today!

Yep, I’m commando. I woke up hot, sweaty, and more than a little irritable. And the power washing of our building did happen today. Lots of noise to REALLY freak out the cats. So I decided perfume didn’t need to be subjected to all that.

    Scented goings-on should resume tomorrow.

    Emoji Day? ????????????

    SOTD = Penhaligon’s Clandestine Clara

    Boozy vanilla. W00t!

    Life-Changing Experience / Thing No. 2:

I am trying to balance the universe somewhat by sharing something “life-changing” for me. I shared #1 a few months ago (Clorox Toilet Wand) which some of you said you would try, while others encouraged me to use something more eco-friendly. I appreciated the suggestions but I am sticking with my magic wand ???? (where’s a magic wand emoji when you need it … I settled for a red shoe instead).

Anyway, #2 is Starbucks Salted Cream Cold Brew! ♥️♥️♥️

This was introduced a little over a week ago and I’ve already drank 4 of these.

    https://www.elitedaily.com/p/what-does-starbucks-salted-cream-cold-foam-cold-brew-taste-like-its-delicious-9718956

It is basically a cold brew topped with salted creamy vanilla foam – heaven! You can customize the amount of caramel syrup (for me, 1 pump for tall and 2 pumps for grande). It is covered with a lid that does not require a straw (here’s my nod to being more eco-conscious)…the opening is a slightly smaller version of a guitar pick, smoothly curved at the edge to fit ones lips. Sipping through this opening is a good way to get the foam along with the coffee. If you are a tea drinker, many bubble tea stores have “milk foam” bubble tea – same idea! Hmmm, I wonder if I could ask the barista to replace the cold brew with iced tea next time???

Have you tried the Starbucks Salted Cream Cold Brew?

I almost feel obligated to say “not affiliated”. If this sounds like an advertisement, it’s not. I just love to share what makes me happy!

I don’t drink coffee, I’m jittery enough under my own power, but that does sound delicious. Reminds me of the salted caramel gelato from Trader Joe’s I bought twice, then swore never again. So good, it’s hard to stop eating it.

We have one of those. It just flushes a little harder. Maybe there is a more updated model, mine is about a year old. I noticed that the rim on ours is narrow so less flat surface under the seat. I still clean it all the time.
