Thursday scent of the day 7/12

Posted by Robin on 12 July 2018 231 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! (It's also Pecan Pie Day, I guess because all of the appropriate days in October were already full?) What fragrance are you wearing?

I am wafting the remains of last night's Quantum Health Deet-Free Buzz Away Extreme Towelettes, described by more than one Amazon reviewer as smelling "horrible". I don't find it quite horrible, but it is not lovely either. It does have amazing staying power.

Reminder: 7/13 will be Aquatic Friday...wear an aquatic or something meant to evoke the sea.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

The mosquitoes and flies have been so bad here this summer (lower Great Lakes). I get eaten alive unless I am covered in deep woods Off. Need to look into deet free options, thanks Robin, I didn’t know they existed. Glad you are enjoying your vacation 🙂

    SOTM = Terracotta, day 4

    Still love it.

Ugh to bug repellent smell. It’s always the stinkers that linger.

Last night I wore 8 spritzes of Cologne du 68, thanks to Robin for mentioning it yesterday. It is a delightful scent for a quiet evening.

With so much inspiration here at NST, who could resist another? and another? and maybe one more? 😀

It’s fun to decide what might go well with the dry down of Terracotta. Several Guerlain scents have been winners.

Is it coincidence that on my way to work, I heard Loverboys Turn me loose and Kelly Clarkson Break away? I think not. Sotd is AP Maitresse. The last time I wore this to work someone said I smelled old fashioned, lol. Hoping if I smell like an older relative people might remember their manners. Fingers crossed.

I used to have a bottle of this and I too thought of it as old-fashioned. I loved that type of scent when I was younger and also went through bottles of Chanel No 5 and the original Norell – wonder if you can still get that one.

I agree with tiffanie. Isn’t it surprising how scents one doesn’t like, seem to linger forever around? I still smell Rien from ELDO on the hoodie I wore a month aogo when trying it. Even after washing it!

Today I’m wearing PdN – Juste un reve combined with just a small splash of Signorina . A bit too sweet for my personal taste, but seems to be quite likeable for the rest of the world.
Unrelated : I bought What would love do as a gift for a friend , after seeing how liked it is here 🙂 Thank you all for the suggestion, I love finding new perfumes through you 🙂

What a beautiful lake Te Anau is.

SOTD is Penhaligon’s Orange Blossom. I bought a split portion several years ago and then promptly stashed it when the envelope arrived… and lost track of it for, like, four years. (!) When it came to light, I was pleased to find that I liked it, a lot, which is unusual for me since I typically find orange blossom very soapy on me. (It does bring up the question of why I bought it in the first place. I still don’t know.) ANyway, this one isn’t soapy; it’s somewhere between fresh blossom and candy, and it seems that I like that effect.

I seem to have recovered from my vaccine aftereffects.

Robin, I have loved all the lakes pictures this week. They are so beautiful and peaceful!

I am wearing Carthusia Corallium. I thought I could finish this mini today, but there is a note that annoys me horribly, and I cannot wear it anymore, perhaps patchouli? I am not so sure. To the unwanted perfumes basket has gone and I will say another “mini” is done.

That definitely counts as being “done”…..any perfume in my collection that gets confiscated by another family member I consider to be “done” as well. And just think, there may be someone who absolutely adores Corallium 🙂

I wasn’t feeling the aquatics today, so I rummaged through some samples and ended up with Agonist Dark Saphir. It’s a rose-oud.. It’s well done, but there isn’t really much more to say about it. I feel like I have a couple of al-Rehab oils that smell very similar, and for which I paid next to nothing.

I really enjoy a well done salty/aquatic perfume but they can be really terrible when not done right. Oud minerale by Tom Ford would be an example of this.. it smells like fish. Drinking lemon spearmint tea, and wearing Keiko Mecheri’s Gourmandises. I forget how much I like this one, even though it is very rose-centric. Not that I don’t like roses – I do. For whatever reason, though, I don’t have a lot of rose perfumes in my collection. This, like Bois de Paradis, strikes me as being very jammy, and is both sparkling and deep at the same time.

Day 2 of Annick Goutal Neroli.

I also have a deet-free natural bug repellent recommendation: Herbal Armor. My aunt used to bring it to our family camp trips when I was kid, so I’ve tested it out and found that it actually works pretty well. Plus I kinda like the smell. I remember it being sort of a citronella/lemongrass/herbal smell.

I kind of like the smell of citronella. My grandmother used to have a big bottle of citronella oil and would dab it on my sheets every night in summer.

Controversial because of its potential toxicity (nervous system side effects which are rare). I use DEET when I’m in infested areas, especially places where deer ticks are present. I do NOT want Lyme’s disease and essential oils are not effective for this. There are also concerns about effects on the environment and wildlife, but when used on one’s person, there’s not much actual evidence that there’s mass harm happening.- unless you’re using mass quantities or drinking or huffing it, of course.

I’m loving all these lake photos , they remind me of the summer holidays we used to have as a family in Norway, another gorgeous country.

Wearing the distinctly unaquatic Péché Cardinal, which I’m hugely enjoying. It’s no doubt the trashiest of the MDCI’s that I’ve tried, but loud and proud!

I forgot to put on any perfume this morning, and once I got to work, I had a mini heart attack when I discovered that all my data had disappeared from its usual location–data that I need for a presentation this afternoon!!! After a half hour of panicking and trying to find the right people to talk to, everything has now been fixed. I’ve also anointed myself with the dregs of my Incense Rose sample, which means it will no longer be an EBP at work 🙁 unless I make myself a decant from my gorgeous newish bottle. All this to say that the day is back on track.

I pushed myself pretty hard at the gym for the past three days (I’ve been taking Insanity/Boot Camp-type classes at the work gym), and my body is one massive ache. I would not like to work out today, but the boyfriend insists the worst thing to do for muscle soreness is nothing. A hair of the dog-type situation. Maybe I’ll go for a walk.

That’s my kind of nightmare–the disappearing data. So glad it got sorted out. (Though it’s a good reminder to up my back up paranoia to the point of absurdity.)

Aye, “active recovery” really does help. (I ache in sympathy: getting back to weight training after nine months out with injury and some muscles are now making their displeasure at being woken from sloth known, even with these teeny weeny weights. Which means I am being extra conscientious about doing my daily bodyweight work, between gym sessions. Even if it’s horrid.)

For super hard workouts, I always loved an easy swim, 15 or so laps. The stretching and gentle resistance the water provides worked the lactic acid/soreness out like a dream.

It WAS a nightmare! I’m contemplating saving local copies of everything to my computer, but…that’s a LOT of data to save locally.

Daily bodyweight work between gym sessions! That’s really impressive. I’m in a similar position–I stopped working out for two years because of a broken foot + writing my thesis/defending, and I’m still not back in the same shape I was in three years ago 🙁

My body actually feels much better now than it did this morning, so I might be able to persuade myself to work out again this afternoon. We shall see!

they are only *little* bodyweight sessions these days. Ten minutes when I get up. Ugh, though, to broken foot and thesis writing combos. I find exercise really helps my focus when I’m writing. (Phd time in the morning before work, gym in the evenings when I don’t need brain.)

Can you get an external drive for back ups? 2Tb ones are run to about 65-70 quid, and that’s a lot of peace of mind.

I find that yoga is a nice alternative on days when I’m sore or just don’t feel like doing an intense workout. It keeps me in the habit of being active, but it’s easy on the body and gives me a good stretch at the same time.

I love this one, it’s perfectly balanced woods, amber, and salty notes. It doesn’t get milky-sweet as most figs tend to do.
For a refreshing green fig perfume, I like Roger & Gallet’s Fig or FIg & Poppy by Speziali Fiorentini, both are fruity green pulpy florals with a distinct fig note.

Best of luck with your interview!! I went scentless last year when I had a series of interviews, felt quite naked and made me nervous at some point. But I have read so many articles about interview and fragrance, all of them suggest no fragrance, just in case anyone doesn’t like or allergic to perfume. I didn’t have a job then and couldn’t afford the risks… best of luck with your interview!!

Good morning from sunny San Diego! I just finished up a sample of Jardin de Monsier Li – since finish it up seems to be the theme around here lately! I was thinking it was slightly aquatic, but realized I was thinking of Jardin Sur le Nil. Ah well, I smell good nevertheless!

I actually do have a few aquatic fragrances – I don’t mind it unless it is super overpowering. I think I’ll wear Missoni Acqua tomorrow, since it’s right in the name! Also have Pacifica Lotus Garden, which is a dupe for the aforementioned Sur le Nil – I did a side-by-side and actually prefer the much cheaper Pacifica!

Nice job! ???????? BTW, agree with Pink Sugar for cotton candy and/or candyfloss. Victoria’s Secret might have something along those lines, too, but it’s been ages since I have been in one of their stores. So I can’t vouch for what any of their perfumes smell like.

Those 2 are the main ones that come to mind. Angel also, but that is so much other stuff too. There’s always Demeter for straight cotton candy. https://www.fragrantica.com/notes/Cotton-Candy-237.html

I’m wearing LVNEA Parfum Crème Nocturnal Bloom, which I smelled in some hippie witch shop in Toronto, loved, didn’t buy, and later tracked down online. My jar has nearly melted down in my non-air conditioned apartment!

I like that line. I’ve owned the one that smells like woods and ambergris(name escapes me) and I have Nuit Desert, which is smoke and jasmine and was on sale at a local hair salon which also sells body products. What does yours smell like?

A sort of spicy/smoky/earthy smell that reminds me of marigolds – a little bit assertive, maybe not even that pleasant. I put some on in the shop and walked back to where I was staying with it (about half an hour) and by the time I got there I couldn’t stop smelling myself. (It says it’s “osmanthus blossoms, carnations, patchouli, petitgrain, orange blossom, clove.” I think a lot of what I’m smelling is the clove.) I also got a handful of samples, and ended up ordering a bottle of Bois de l’Obscurité, a really interesting dark loam smell with a strange minty hint.

I am commando so far partly due to laziness and partly to allergies. Can’t smell much. I know I have some samples of aquatics but haven’t bothered to pull out the various boxes they might be in. (That would entail getting involved in an entire closet clean-out. Good idea but it’s too hot.)
My friend with the missing sister says she no longer expects a positive result, and the search just is for a “recovery” now (I.e. a body). Very sad. There have been developments on the news just now after noon about homicide police searching a house where some of her stuff was found. I just feel so awful for the whole family but especially their mother. Sorry to be glum but thank you for letting me share.

Feminin Puriel for me today, from a sample. Feeling a fair amount of sinus pressure, so something soft is good. Wonder if it was dust from going through and tossing papers. Will use the neti pot later and more allergy meds.

A photo of Lake Te Anau – how lovely! We had a few holidays there when I was a child. I’m going with the very off-theme 24 Faubourg today. It’s Friday here, and feel quite drained, so my perfume needs to create some presence that I’m lacking right now 🙂

Well, It’s only polite that I match a photo of Te Anau with a NZ perfume, Lakeland Flora which is a really nice, light scent …kowhai, pollen and pepper and water. My understanding is that the Mt Lyall in the photo was named after the botanist/surgeon aboard the survey ship Acheron that carried out the first coastal survey of NZ in 1850…gave us the first recorded sighting of NZ’s hughest mountain Aoraki/Mt Cook. Te Anau , in the photo, was inhabited by Maori , lots of traces of hunting sites ( food gathering of flightless birds) and also on the route to the west coast to gather pounamu ( greenstone/jade) for tools. Very remote at one stage….A flightless bird, the Takahe, believed to be extinct , was rediscovered near those mountains in the 1950s. I have to write a submission today opposing the building of a massive luxury hotel in the national park at the other end of that lake…we keep losing parts of our public lands to developers, really soul destroying.

Hey all. Late today. Madtownkid and I spent the morning on the road and will visit with my parents for a couple of days. We drove thru some heavy rain and now it is pretty dreary out. Tomorrow is supposed to be nicer and we will have a literal aquatic Friday- spent at the beach and then a dinner of grilled steaks.
SotD is Bois Blonds. 6 sprays on each limb. I may be able to finish the bottle by the end of the month. I brought along something Bleue for the next couple of days.????

Robin, do your “not horrible” smelling towelettes actually work to keep off mosquitoes? If so, I would definitely be interested in something like that. Last time I was near a lake, all the body parts that weren’t covered with clothes were VERY well bitten.

SOTD = back in 2 sprays of Dame Passionfruit, Orange Blossom & Vetiver again. It does smell kind of water-y to me after wearing it for a few days in a row…

I am commenting very late in the day! Please forgive me. How are all my fine smelling friends? I have missed commenting here but have continued to lurk. I stopped by my Nordstrom here in Norfolk, Virginia, the poorest performing store in the entire chain. The fragrance counters are gutted. I was hoping to find Cartier Declaration in the parfum concentration but no. There is no more Chanel No. 19. When this store opened and until this year this was a very well stocked counter. I have a Nordstrom card and have been paying full price for several things per year to try to contribute to the local perfume economy but I left this evening without buying anything. Hermès Twilly, no thank you. And Gucci Bloom just bloomed on my skin until I felt like the white floral monster from Hell, and I like white florals! Yes, we have Ulta and Sephora but I just do not like either place very much. I beg your forebearance, kind and sweet smelling comrades, but I would love to smell some new smells! If you could recommend just one fragrance from 2017 or 2018 that you loved, I will order a sample.

Super long day so just checking in. The shoot for that show got pushed until tomorrow night due to weather so tried to clean house and do things after work I’ve been putting off. Made a yummy dinner from Blue Apron (no affiliation, I just love them lol). J had to work late, a night flight, and won’t be home until after midnight. I took the opportunity to douse myself in Shalimar (not his fav, but y’all know I love it). Two sprays of edp on my chest/neck and some extrait on my arm. I smell awesome IMO. 😀

Sycomore yesterday, but a first try of Diptyque’s Tempo last night (thank you hajusuuri. I think this is going to get a lot of wear once things cool off a bit here. I particularly like the way the violet leaf dance through the patch…)
