Wednesday scent of the day 7/4

Posted by Robin on 4 July 2018 239 Comments

Happy Fourth of July! What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing Carthusia Mediterraneo over Tauer Perfumes Rose Delight Body Oil.

Reminder: 7/6 will be Frida Kahlo's birthday...do what you like with the theme!  (Kevin wrote about a perfume she actually wore in A Celebrity’s Scent: Frida Kahlo & Dana Emir.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Melograno is a great scent. When I first sniffed it, I was surprised because it doesn’t at all smell like pomegranate (the fruit). I think you were right on the nose (har, har) in saying that it reminds you of vintage Emeraude. Just lovely…

It really does have a classic and vintage vibe to it which is why it resonates with me. I could see this being someone’s signature scent .

    You smell awesome, Robin.

I am in Balenciaga Paris. Here is a quote from Frida Kahlo to link my SOTD with the community project:

“They are so damn ‘intellectual’ and rotten that I can’t stand them anymore….I rather sit on the floor in the market of Toluca and sell tortillas, than have anything to do with those ‘artistic’ b*tches of Paris.”
(Son malditos ‘intelectuales’ y tan podridos que no puedo soportarlos por más tiempo… Prefiero estar sentada en el suelo del mercado de Toluca vendiendo tortillas que tener tratos con esas putas ‘artísticas’ de París.)

I hope this does not violate the comment policy.

Vanille Orange was a limited edition in the original aluminum can with the blue print (I got it in a swap). Demeter has an Orange Cream Pop scent but it isn’t this good.

SOTD Parfumerie Moderne Belle Rives because it is a holiday and this perfume puts me into a meditative funk every time I wear it (which is a great place to be, but doesn’t really work for a day at the hospital solving other people’s problems…) Lovely incense and iris..I was much of night taking care of an on-call problem, so I am wearing this and napping. Not sure how this fits into the theme…but it is lovely scent for this hot lazy day…

CV is good and if you buy another BEFORE you finish your current one it won’t count because then it’s just an extension of the one you already have (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it).

Kind of like free refills…
I have a similar approach to decants. I only count the ones over 5 ml (5 ml is just a large sample, right?), so sometimes I buy a 5 ml decant in one quarter, then buy another 5 ml of the same scent next quarter. This way I get 10 ml I do not report in damage polls. 🙄

Happy 4th of July to those of you who celebrate it! I’m finally able to comment – it’s hard with the time difference. At any rate, greetings from Switzerland. I’m covered in 4 scents – I got the new guide yesterday, read through it at a fast pace, and have decided to try to sample as many of the 4 or 5 stars as I can (i.e. only really the mainstream ones). Today, I’m trying “I’m Home” and “Smuggler’s Soul” from Lush, as well as Alaia and Jasmine Marzipane. No clear favorite (or perhaps the Marzipane), but I’m having fun trying to match the scent descriptions to what I am smelling.
Happy hump day to those who are not having a holiday.

Hi everyone, I get today off paid, yay! It was super busy last night at work. I was almost in tears by the time I left. I don’t have any real plans today but am celebrating American perfumery wearing Dame Manderin, Neroli, and Ceder. I dumped the resr of my sample all over my arms and legs, and am getting quite a bit of projection. My daughter chose to wear Tommy Girl, which is her favorite. Hope everyone has a great day!

My sotd is OJ Frangipani, from the travel set I selected at the OJ boutique in London yesterday. What a charming, tiny storefront. I had a wonderful SA named Scott who took me through the whole range and then I selected 5 for my travel set- Woman, Champaca, Frangpiani, Ambre Royal and Tsarina. Totally worth the side trip (hubby and son went to Harrods to the technology department instead). My son and I also visited Guerlain in the Harrods perfume salon, where the SA Alex was also lovely. I couldn’t bring myself to stop in any of the other boutiques in the salon, knowing there wasn’t a chance I would ever buy ????. We go to Paris on the Eurostar on Friday, so will continue my shopping there!

You must have gone to the Old Bond St.! I only remembered because I got lost trying to get there! I got several travel sprays there back when they weren’t offering that format for some of the newer scents (they were press giveaways but hey, it worked out for me at a reasonable price).

Have fun and the best is yet to come!

Happy 4th to USAers, and hello to everyone else!

    1) Slept in, and gave myself spa treatments: Rose/Jasmine hair shampoo & conditioner(Amazing Jasmine, git it at TJ MAXX), Lavender body scrub (Trader Joe’s) and a dollop of Rose Otto cream all over (from a sample) . I smell very relaxed and chilled out for this holiday, and the house smells wonderful!

    2) Cloudy day BUT t will clear up and become sunny. Will be making pitchers of rum spiked flor de jamaica and shandies for people dropping by. I am lazy and will be making big Med style salads, hummus and grilled pizza- no ribs, no jerk chicken, no pork shoulder- too much work for a dew drop inn situation.

    3) Gives all youse big scented hugs and glasses of booze (virtual)

We’re just being inundated with rain in the Houston area today and it’s very very dreary and gray. I’m supposed to go to a 4th of July party at a friend’s tonight. She has a rooftop deck from which we can watch the downtown fireworks–but we’ll have to see if that’s going to happen at all. I wanted a bit of comfort and put on a spray of Penhaligon’s Elixir for its smoke and spice, but it turned out to seem to spiky for my mood, so I scrubbed it. Maybe I need something sweet like Daphne. Still no news about my friend’s sister, and I’m sure they won’t be out searching today. Equusearch is directing the search, which is good in one way as they’re experts, but they’re looking in some woody and grassy areas, which doesn’t bode well. I can only think of her family worry about her being somewhere out in this rain either hurt or worse, and it’s too bleak and sad.

SotM = Oeillet Sauvage (red carnations)
SotA = Jardins de Bagatelle (white flowers)
    SotE = Hiris (blue bottle)

I chose French perfume houses because our countries’ flags share the same colors. It’s my low-key way of thinking both nationally and internationally today.

Also I wished I was wearing Hiris when LisaD mentioned it yesterday, so this evening I’ll scratch that itch.

And that’s my big frag plan for the 4th. Hope all who celebrate will enjoy the day.

CSP Vanille Pitahaya to match Frida’s Pitahayas painting. The perfume has long been discontinued, and it was in my get-rid-of box, but I’m putting it back into rotation, along with Vanille Pineapple. They’re both sweet things in very different ways, Pitahaya more sultry and musky, Pineapple bright and sweet. They take me back to when I first got into collecting and discovering perfumes that weren’t mainstream. I think they still have a place in my collection. ????

As others have remarked, NST is always educational… I had to look up pitahaya to learn that it is a dragon fruit, then I had to look up the Kahlo painting! You’ve done good work here, trf! And I think it’s rather nice that those CSPs haven’t been banished from your collection. 🙂

Wow, now that sent me on a Google search that was rewarding, since I had no idea what a pitahaya was, nor of her having painted them. Very interesting! Like what’s called “Dragon fruit” in China and a very weird-looking little fruit indeed. I have eaten that in some fruit salads in China but don’t remember it having a very strong taste, and can’t quite imagine what it would smell like either. But that’s a great choice on your part!

Enjoying the perversely wonderful 4th tradition of watching Jaws this morning as I putter around. We went to see it 4 or 5 years ago on the big screen, and I had forgotten how great it is…perfectly paced and far scarier in a theater.

Sampled a bit of Olfactive Flashback this morning – was considering it as a way to prepare myself for the rhubarb crunch (crisp) my sister is making from my grandmother’s recipe (she grew it in her backyard garden.) But, I’m not sure I care for the dry down, so we will see after I shower. Looking forward to playing with my nephew’s Doberman, Loki, later and eating corn and hamburgers…

I know you are MUCH more familiar than me with carrier lotions and oils, but it worked pretty well to spread the scent over arms and legs. Of course it’s faded by now, but it was nice while it lasted.

Hades-hot and humid here today, too. I wanted to find an American-made perfume for the holiday, and the first one I laid hands on is a little bottle of « Mint 26 » by Josh Meyers (Imaginary Authors). It was a mod he had in his studio when several of us from Portland visited him a couple of years ago. A precursor to Saint Julep, perhaps? When we all swooned over it, he gave us little bottles. He’s the nicest guy. And it’s perfect in this weather!
Happy 4th to all of my compatriots here, and happy Hump Day to everyone else!

I think that I am done for the moment. I do like Lilylang but will have to test further in cooler weather. Delacourte’s website sells travel sizes that are only 7.5 mls each. Their smallest “custom box” is two travel sizes for a total of 15 mls. This is what I ordered. You can order two different scents or get two of the same in your custom box. My second scent is Smeraldo but my initial impression is not favorable. I’ll have to test it further. Anyway, 15 mls is only around $40 at full price. It’s really pretty reasonable even without a discount.

No SOTD yet. I have been relaxing and enjoying a rare day with not much I need to do. A few days ago I finally got to smell SJP Stash, and snagged a rollerball of it. So far I really like it–a warm, woody scent that is still subtle.

Our trip to New England is coming up soon, and I plan to visit Providence Perfume Company during our time in Rhode Island. I never did get around to ordering any samples, so I will have a lot of sniffing to do. I figure I can justify buying a bottle if I find something I love because (1) it is a souvenir of a vacation, not just another bottle of perfume, and (2) I recently finished the bottle of JM Orange Blossom that was my souvenir of our trip to Seattle in 2014. One old one out, one new one in, right?

I used to make myself finish a perfume before getting a new one. I had alot of fun sampling and testing in anticipation of draining a bottle.

Happy Fourth or Wednesday/Thursday, depending on where you are!

SOTD is Lush’s The Smell of Freedom.

Today’s plan: Wimbledon, baseball, swimming pool, hot dogs, ‘adult beverages’, fireworks.

Have a good one, NSTers! Keep cool and stay hydrated if you’re in a heatwave!

SOTD = Eau de Reeking Havoc

Ha! Not really, so far only 3:
    – CdG Lily, from a dabber. It smells of indistinct flowers to me…and as experienced by ElisaP, very light. So it probably was not fair for me to pit it against the next perfume as it got clobbered by
    – CdG Concrete, from a dabber. No cement to speak of here. When I looked at Fragrantica, it only lists sandalwood which had zero presence to my nose. Instead, I got an initial powdery lipstick vibe and it has now dried down to a woody, high-pitched musk. Me don’t like.
    – NVC Niral, from an atomizer sample from a wonderful NST perfumista, you know, the queen enabler. It reminds me of Mohur, but with Iris and Violet’s blended in. The drydown is very similar to Mohur’s. I would go for a decant of this as I prefer Mohur Extrait.

I may wash these off to try a few more…

Have a good Fourth to those in the U.S.

      1) ElisaP could have a second career as a nose. Her sense of smell is very refined. At least when compared to mine. I always wonder what she gets that I don’t? ????????
      2) I like powdery lipstick vibes but also usually dislike high pitched scents.

      3) Niral didn’t work for me. Others have mentioned that it smells like Mohur but I don’t get that. The list of notes should make it a slam dunk.

      Reek on Hajusuuri!

I agree with you re: ElisaP and her discerning nose!

Concrete was a disappointment but hey, we can’t love them all!

As to Niral, it smelled different when I dabbed vs. sprayed. I like the sprayed version better and I got cardamom which was not listed as a note in Fragrantica!

I will report on 4 more later, one a scrubber which I hope to never smell again.

Hello NST! Happy 4th of July to the folks in the USA, and happy Humpday to the rest of you.

Laying low and staying out of today’s heat and humidity. I did manage to walk to the grocery store this morning before the worst of the weather rolled in. Not as bad as yesterday was, but that’s like comparing stubbing your toe to stepping on a Lego. Both unpleasant!

SOTD = back in Tauer LAdDM. After reading KellyC’s comment about her experiences with Tauer scents in NM, I am looking forward to someday trying my samples in a drier climate. Until then, they will smell pretty darn fabulous in the summer muggies here on the East Coast.

I had to laugh at your comparison, I’m guessing you’ve stepped on a few legos?! That is a very distinctly unpleasant sensation, I’ll take the stubbed toe. Lol.

Almost made it to the local farmers’ market and then back home before it really started raining hard for quite a while this morning. After that, it was muggy, then it rained again and I don’t now what is in store for the rest of the late afternoon (and then evening). If they shoot off fireworks in my community, I will watch them from my front yard. Decided to wear OS Ombre Indigo, as somehow I don’t it will appeal to any mosquitos I may encounter this evening.

Oh and P.S,somebody asked what I would consider cold here in Africa…well,we rarely experience plummeting temperatures here.Nights might go below freezing sometime, but days are usually around 18-21 degrees celsius. That being said, daytime temp yesterday was 9…unusual and uncomfortable.

It’s one part gin to 2 parts honey simple syrup to 1 part lemon juice. It is deceptively simple, and you do not feel like you are drinking something boozy.

    Reeking havoc, Part deux,

Taking advantage of skin space after scrubbing off this morning’s samples…
    1. Anatatole Lebreton Grimoire – NO.NO.NO! I should have trusted my nose when I popped open the vial. Cumin, anyone? But I soldiered on. Big mistake – Cumin AND Body Odor. NO! I grabbed Technu and WASHED.IT.OFF.STAT!

    2. Parfum Satori Satori – very subtle almost no smell at the beginning, but dried down to a smokey incense, leaning masculine. Needs further assessment.

    3. Parfum Satori Iris Homme – The initial blast of lemon / Smarties / Vitamin mist have drowned out Satori. Very nice irisy thread and drydown after that initial lemony blast. This may join the family. Have you tried this?

    4. Vero Profumo Naja – I’ve had this on skin via dabber and it didn’t do much for me. Enter a manufacturer’s spray sample (courtesy of LuckyScent) and POW…whatever it is I smelled (and I could not tease out the notes), I must have a bottle. I won’t be mail ordering anything while it’s hot out so hopefully there’s still a bottle left when I trigger the buy. In the meantime, I’ll move it in and out of my cart and maybe, just maybe, a bot will provide me with a magic discount code! Anyone up for a split?

#3 – I meant Vitamin C…and that combo must have drowned out the top notes of Satori Satori.

Grimier did nothing for me. I think the only one that I clicked with was Eau Scandalese. Coraline is somewhat debatable, I might need to get it in a spayable form.
Naja is quite amazing. Extra points to Vero For creativity 🙂

I have never tried Naja, but maybe I should have.
