Thursday scent of the day 6/28

Posted by Robin on 28 June 2018 354 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Tau Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: a morning dab of Tauer Perfumes Sotto La Luna Tuberose.

Reminder: 6/29 will be Opposite Day...wear the opposite of what would be expected. Suggested by Pyramus, who provided a bunch of examples: La Nuit on a bright sunshiny day, Matin Calin in the afternoon, Voile d’Ete in the depth of winter or Winter Delice in the middle of July, Aromatics In White when you’re dressed all in black.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

You crack me up! Lol, I have not smelled Nu since it’s release, is yours the current version? Also wanted to tell you, I saw that Sephora is carrying Phlur online now.

I am assuming it is the original…it’s the EDT in that gorgeous cylindrical cerulean blue bottle…at the rate that I am going I will probably finish it tomorrow :)

Sephora seems to be carrying a lot more new and upcoming niche brands….might take a peek :)

I consider this one to be “MY” bottle because no one else in the house has laid claim to it or wants to share it with me…which means I don’t have any qualms about finishing it if I love to wear it and I want to wear it until it is done…the lines are blurred in my house with regard to bottles because they are literally all over the place with everyone willing to share but some bottles more loved by some than others…I thought about this last night and I would say that full bottles that are “exclusively” mine are probably only around 8 or so? My goal this summer is to wear just those…my next project when NU is done is to stick with one fragrance for a month….I think it might be Jardin Clos as it really is such a beautiful summer scent…..I will just have to figure out how to tie it into the CP for the next four weeks :)

I have a sample of the EDP and its nice, to my nose its similar to the EDT and I use to own the EDT.
            How was your move?

          • hannahmom says:

It went relatively well – now to get the old place cleaned and unpack the zillion of boxes in my dining room.
I have all of my perfume yet to unearth and organize

          • kpaint says:
            28 June 2018 at 1:14 pm

I have both and they smell exactly the same (though I haven’t worn side-by-side) but the edp is stronger – better projection; lasts longer.

Good luck with the perfume unearthing and unpacking!

    Good morning all!

I fell like every day is Opposite Day for me since I’m always wearing a woman’s perfume, rather than a man’s. I’m wearing Donna Karan, the original in a swan bottle, which I found yesterday. Pretty good, though I’m not really sure what the fuss is about. Now Black Cashmere, I understand that one….

I am in Clean Reserve Blonde Rose. I sprayed the whole 3ml sample on me to finish it. MISTAKE! The only thing I get is cigarette ashes. Very masculine and strong. No roses, no sandalwood, no musk and some cedarwood. I will not scrub it off. It is bothering me greatly and therefore keeping me awake, so I will see that as an advantage on a very busy day ????.

I like the moon photo today, Robin!

If I had known it was TAU Day, I would’ve worn one of my TAUer perfumes.

Instead, I’m back in Chanel No. 19 EDT. I keep reading descriptions of No. 19 as “bracing” and “spine-stiffening” but it’s really quite soft on me. Maybe because I spray lightly?

Ha! Good one on the TAUer!

I don’t get bracing or spine-stiffening from No 19 either. To me it’s ultra feminine, and a very “perfumey” perfume (if that makes sense.) I wear the edt and edc. The edp falls more along “spine-straightening” to me, but that’s still not how I’d categorize it. The edt and edc wear very lightly on me, (moreso the edt) and I spray very liberally.

I totally get what you mean by “perfumey.” Many of the Chanels strike me that way. Maybe because they’re so classic that I think of them as *the* prototypical perfumes? Or maybe it’s all the cosmetic/soapy-smelling iris and aldehydes Chanel uses?

Yes! Prototypical “perfume” is exactly the word I’ve been searching for. I’ve chalked it up to their being abstract rather than referencing something recognizable. I know No 5 is often referred to as being the first “abstract” perfume, but I find 19 even more so. 22 probably falls into that category as well.

You are so good with your cleaning house! I got rid of my maternity stuff years ago but have still kept three separate large tubs of each individual mini Marzipan’s baby clothes as well as one bucket of matching outfits. Once they have flown the coop they are getting their baby clothes and they can decide what they want to do with them.

I have to keep changing my expectations about the heat wave. I can’t help but think, “finally! hot weather” since I’ve actually been cool, if not downright cold, and wearing sweaters since I arrived in Cleveland. But I’m pretty sure this’ll be the last time I look forward to 90+ weather ;)

I should add that I’ve spent nearly all my time here sitting on covered porches, i.e., in the shade. It’s actually too cold inside for me since the place we’re staying has the AC blasting and I’d need full-on winter gear to withstand it. The brief sunbreaks have come as a relief. And my skin seems to love the humidity… so far.

If it helps, here’s my donation story: I recently gave my first pair of Frye boots (Campus – the classics) to the Goodwill. I’d meant to keep them as some kind of keepsake (I never wore them much because they didn’t fit particularly well), or at the very least sell them on consignment. But I decided I can’t traipse across the country lugging boxes of nostalgic items, and I had no time to resell.

So I’m happy they’ll end up in someone else’s hands who will hopefully be thrilled to find them.

I had one pair, very distictive with embroidery, even though my feet could never wear them again, I hope I don’t see them on someone else. Honestly it would be emotionally easier for me to just throw everything in a dumbster blindly. It’s the reminiscing part that takes so long.

Wearing that last of my Ambre 114 sample today – amber is not generally my thing in the heat, so it’s a nod to Opposite day. I don’t like this quite as well as Ambre Sultan but it’s very nice. It’s also the third sample I’ve finished off this week – I’m coming for you, sample pile.

Also, I’ve been meaning to suggest a theme: wear a perfume with a terrible bottle. I love Mugler Cologne but I HATE the (100ml) bottle. It looks okay, but it’s awkward to hold and the spray is too strong and leaves me with a dripping arm.

          Calling Hermes Galop…

The bottle is so gorgeous (one of the reasons I wanted an FB, but I’d never seen or held it in person) and yet so very difficult to simultaneously hold and spray!

I’ll also give a shout-out to Bvlgari Black – another cool bottle that’s ridiculously hard to spray. Good thing it’s rubber since I’m pretty sure I’ve dropped mine.

The same is true of Aura in the green bottle, which I just bought. Hard to see where to spray it and hard to spray just a little bit. It’s so overpowering, you really don’t want to overdo it.

I just looked up this bottle – it’s very pretty but I see how it would be unwieldy. Maybe the strong spray is a Mugler thing? It matters less with a light cologne, but I still find it annoying.

SOTD this morning was Dyptique Vetiverio over a sample of Molton Brown’s Grapefruit and Vetiver shower gel. This shower gel is lovely with a citrus hit and a lot more floral that I was expecting. (I can see a full bottle in the future) The scent lasts all day, albeit very close to the skin. This evening, same shower gel with a large spritz of vintage Eau Sauvage. The top notes are very fleeting (as expected) but the middle and dry down …….♥️

I think a big part of why there haven’t been any fireflies has to do with a bad winter we had a couple of years back. A lot of trees in the neighborhood were damaged and had to come down.

Elite Saab L’Eau Couture. Not really opposite of anything, unless I think of it as a fresh, clean scent that is quite the opposite of my apartment, which desperately needs a thorough vacuuming – filled with the pets’ magical fibers and city grime…

Amused by my husband’s barking at the WC announcers. He just finds American coverage so irritating much of the time. (He’s like this with pretty much all sports, so I chose a long time ago to find it entertaining…)

My dad also likes to yell at the TV during sports, particularly during Badger basketball or football. His yellow lab (sadly, no longer with us) used to literally bark at him when he would be yelling at the TV and it was all quite comical to watch.

    1) SOTD Philosykos- although it is the opposite of the mil.d summer day we had yesterday- it is cool and cloudy this morning.

    2) RIGHT when I roll into work there is a last minute meeting (“didn’t you get the invite?” No, I did not! You sent it when I was off work! “Oh”) that I really did NOT have to attend, the GUID script that I fixed was rejected for an error by back office; ONLY to find out that the damn error was ON THEIR END (and with no one taking responsibility for it, of course) AND I DID NOT HAVE MY COFFEE.

My rule – if I did not get the meeting invitation by the morning the day before, there is no guarantee I will see the invitation for the following morning.

Today, I received an invitation for a 1:30AM (not a typo) Eastern meeting on July 5th. Nope, not doing it. I ripped into the group that could not assign the right people to address the issue — I told them the problem, I told them what to fix and they just have to DO IT, instead, they kept punting to another group and that group asked the same questions we already answered several times and I finally said stop – no more emails, no more asking questions. I set up a meeting for Monday 8-9AM and told my main contact to invite the right people. If the problem is not fixed in 2 weeks, we will hold off on making OUR changes when it comes time to execute our portion of a BIG project and they will need to come up with a workaround to get to address any unintended consequences.

I almost refused the meeting but because it included test scripts I written WEEKS BEFORE and included a process manual I wrote a month ago with video recordings I felt compelled to attend. As it turned out, the group was able to follow my instruction and hey look NO ERRORS MA WHEN FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.

SotD = Sotto la Luna Tuberose

Gosh, I love tuberose. I happily give credit to Oscar by Oscar de la Renta. If money were no object I’d bathe in Sotto la Luna Tuberose and Masque’s Luci ed Ombre. I’d be like the Giorgio-wearing women of the past, perfuming up the place real good everywhere I go.

Nyquil-me from last month ordered a handful of samples and did a good job. Les annees 25, PHI, and this Sotto were highlights.

Thank you to Robin for choosing a great scent for today. My brain hasn’t the room to make a choice at the moment. And thank you to holyneroli for the TAUer connection. That made me feel clever without any effort on my part. :D

haha, yes, I blame Nyquil for a few online orders I have yet to come to terms with, but I’m not unhappy about it so far.

Same on tuberose, it was a very happy day when the perfumed light bulb went off in my head.

It’s taken me a long time to recognize tuberose. Oscar de la Renta and Poison are old favorites that I never thought of as florals, much less tuberose-driven. Now when I wear Poison I can’t not smell it, where I used to just smell red and purples berries.

Also, it is meant to be said as “tuber rose” or “tube rose?” I’ve always said the former.

When Poison was new all I could smell was the purple! Due in part I’m sure to the liberal spritzing that was the usual thing then.

I vote for the former pronunciation on tuberose. It’s kind of a three syllable thing for me, but I don’t know if that’s right.

I remember reading someone’s comment (not here on NST) about tuberose. They referred to it as “tubey ho”; still 3 syllables. I love both Poison and Oscar.

Wearing Bois des Iles edt as it never fails. I’m sure I’m not alone in that I have many loves that I’ve nevertheless sprayed and regretted (not the right mood; not right for the weather, etc.) But there are a few in my collection that always smell good and are always right, any time of year: BdI, Shalimar, Gourmand Coquin. I’m sure we’ve done that as a community project already?

In opposite land, here’s my contribution: I’ve spent the last few days obsessively shopping for winter parkas and snow boots. It’s a really good time for it price-wise though I won’t be able to test them out beyond fit. I bought 6(?) pair of boots yesterday – Pajar, Cougar, Sorel, Columbia – most around $40, while a couple were in the $80 range. I also bought a Pajar parka, though I have a feeling it’s going to be too small. I’m hoping some of the Canada Goose, Moose Knuckles and Mackage parkas I’ve been eyeing will be deeply discounted over the summer, but they don’t seem to get too cheap 0_0

Oh, and I bought everything on amazon with slow (not Prime) delivery so they’d get to my apartment next week after we’re moved in. I just got shipping updates and they’re set to arrive Saturday (!) I’ll have to drive over and intercept as the current tenants will surely not appreciate a porch full of boxes showing up on their own moving day. Oops (but really not my fault!)

And finally – any tall women (5’9″+) here that have recommendations for winter tundra gear? I’m 5’10” and have broad shoulders, long arms, and long legs and I have a feeling finding a parka that fits is going to be a bit of a challenge. I’d like one that hits at the knee or lower, too, which may not even be possible for, like, under $1k. But I am perpetually freezing as it is (Reynauds), so I’m not going to face this winter unprepared.

You are going to love the Pajar boots, best boots I ever wore. Toasty warm and comfy. Mackage is $$$ but love my coat. As for your height/build issues, have you checked out the men’s section? I buy kids stuff all the time because I’m small, and often the mens has better designs, when I can find something that fits.

I was stuck buying men’s stuff in my 20s because it was much harder back then to find women’s clothing for taller builds. But men’s clothes are really cut for men (smaller hips, etc.) so the proportions are totally off. Which Mackage coat do you have? I’ve been eyeing the Jada, and almost bought the last one Nordstrom had (on sale) yesterday but someone got to it first!

Oh, you are tall, too! I have read really good things about that coat but was worried about fit issues. I just donated a Marmot fleece & down combo jacket I hadn’t worn in ages because it was way too tight in the shoulders. I’ll give it a try! (By which I mean buy the one that’s already in my amazon cart ;) ) I have an Eddie Bauer parka with a fleece liner and it makes it really cozy and soft.

My Eddie Bauer parka is a tall and fits perfectly. There’s an even longer version of the coat I have but it’s not offered in a tall – but I’m wondering if that’s because it’s off season and they don’t have everything in stock?

I bought my coat (which looks like a CG knockoff) from Macy’s on sale for under $100. I’ve stayed very warm in it. (Key is to put the coat on before heading out into the cold…allows the body warmth to start working.) Realized the fake fur-lined hood is great when it’s snowing…keeps the flakes off the face and keeps my face much warmer when it gets real cold.

Look forward to hearing your boot feedback. (Btw, Darn Tough wool socks are fabulous)

The past couple of weeks have been utterly abysmal. I had to just stop yesterday as I was becoming quite despondent. Hopefully things are not so bad for you on a personal level, though it can be difficult to separate the two.

Yeah, no, nothing is happening personally to me(and fortunately), it’s just the sudden cumulative effect of things that are just hard to swallow, combined with a sense of helplessness, I guess.

I hope that tomorrow is a better day for you Elisa. I am feeling heavy-hearted today as well for personal reasons. Two of my family members were hospitalized. Also, two work buddies are working their last few days before retirement. Although I am happy for their sake, I will miss them. My office is a small group.

SOTD = L’Occitane Immortelle de Corse

The box is blue with an off-center sunburst, the total opposite of today’s cloudy, gray and rainy day.

Has food labeling gone too far? Yesterday at Aldi, I saw a jar of Peanut Butter with Flax and Chia seeds. Sounds interesting! I looked at the label and it listed ingredients starting with Peanuts, then a short list of other ingredients. And then after the last ingredient: “Note: Contains peanuts”. Huh? Of course it does, it is the first it’s on the ingredients list! I can understand Fig Newtons with a note stating may contain traces of … or not processed in a peanut or treenut-free facility!

I just got my scratch and sniff USPS stamps! The scent is very light and does not last for too long. The whole booklet has a stronger smell, but you have to bring it closer to your nose. Nice and different anyway!

I got the scratch and sniffs last Saturday and forgot to comment. I bought the last 2 booklets. Being a nerd I wanted to see if the smell was different based on the featured ice pop – verdict: I couldn’t tell because the only way to smell it without taking the stamp off the booklet was to bring the booklet close to my nose, at which point, I was actually smelling the entire booklet. This may be the first time I’m looking forward to paying the bills I don’t already pay electronically.

I also got 2 booklets and I completely agree that you have to bring the entire booklet close to your nose to smell them. I will tell the difference at the time I pay bills and I scratch and sniff them individually. Like you I pay them electronically, so I will make an exception just to use the stamps.

Have just arrived at my hotel in Dublin, wearing Parfumeur H’s Rose Green, as it’s a sample & small enough to fit in the obligatory plastic bag with cleanser, toner, shampoo, moisturiser etc as I only have handcarry luggage. Beautiful weather, as it was in Aberdeen when I left home this afternoon. Have found an independent perfume retailer which I will check out tomorrow or Saturday, & of course there’s the Brown Thomas department store, but again no purchases due to the handcarry restrictions – might manage to blag a couple of samples though! Looking forward very much to concert on Saturday evening by one of the US’s best exports to the world of music, Kris Kristofferson – woohoo!

Hi all! SOTD is Amouage “Sunshine Man”, not that there’s much trace left at this stage of the day.

I’m once again on the train back from London to Birmingham, after what seems to have been a successful interview. Some last minute approvals to go through but 90% sure I’ll be starting work in London next week, perhaps as early as Monday. Won’t 100% believe it until everything is signed but TOMK and I will be going out for a curry tonight anyway, after several weeks of being careful with money. (A curry won’t break the bank in any event).

A lot of Tempo talk, and especially comparisons to Coromandel piqued my interest so I’m in…Tempo this afternoon. It is indeed very nice. The similarity to Coromandel is not jumping out to me though I can see some similarities. I’ll give myself a bigger dousing when I get home.

Scentwise I’m in Violet Blonde, but not wearing violet or “blonde” (although technically I’m kind of A blond – greying strawberry blond to be far too precise). It’s a calming scent for me, luckily.

I sort of lucked into a FB, and didn’t realize at the time that it was one of the last ones. If I had, I might have bought more than one botyle. It’s lovely, spicy in a slightly cinnamon-y way on me, and generally the woods are more prominent than the violet (if those factor into the calculation). STC still has samples and decants available (hint hint; no affiliation).
