Tuesday scent of the day 6/26

Posted by Robin on 26 June 2018 327 Comments

Happy Tuesday and happy Canoe Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm having a cup of Kenilworth Pekoe (Ceylon) from Upton, and I'm wearing a nice layer of Alba Botanica Kona Coffee After-Sun Lotion.

Reminder: 6/29 will be Opposite Day...wear the opposite of what would be expected. Suggested by Pyramus, who provided a bunch of examples: La Nuit on a bright sunshiny day, Matin Calin in the afternoon, Voile d’Ete in the depth of winter or Winter Delice in the middle of July, Aromatics In White when you’re dressed all in black.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is a coffee cup from the Colour Porcelain collection at Arita / Scholten & Baijings.

Good morning all! A liberal spritzing of Vanille Galante for me today. I didn’t sleep very well so hoping to make it through today with an interesting scent. Wish me luck!

I LOVE Vanille Galante, you smell fabulous.

As for the sleep, yikes! Full moon, solstice, whatever it is, I hope it passes soon. A small comfort, but I find that a restless night is usually followed by a night of sleep so deep I don’t dream at all.

In PdN Rose Royale. A nice and simple rose scent with a fruity opening. It reminds me in some way of Jo Malone Red Roses. Another small decant that I finish and doesn’t need to be replaced.

I am wearing my sample of Slumberhouse Ore… I can make it opposite day by avoiding chocolate, but do I REALLY care that much about the CP? Only time will tell. Speaking with the bereaved spouse of a patient this morning has got me in a bit of a funk, so I’m glad I’m wearing something cozy.

Pretty sure no community project would be worth giving up chocolate for me.

      ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Speaking of which, I am still going strong with my “resolution” to eat really great (milk) chocolate after dinner, although there was a break for a few weeks while the strawberries were local, and I had strawberrry shortcake instead.

The big winners of my taste-testing, for those in need of a treat, are as follows (in order of preference):

      1. Green and Black Sea Salt Milk Chocolate–creamy, full of cocoa flavor, with the sweetness tempered by little salty bits.

      2. Endangered Species Milk Chocolate–darker than most of the milk chocolates I tried, with an almost mocha taste. (But still not so dark as to trigger migraines.)

      3. Theo Milk Chocolate–a nice, all-around creamy milk chocolate.

Honorary mention: Guittard Milk Chocolate, which I recall being delicious and lovely, but I only found it one time, and I think it’s about $4 a bar, making it less available.

According to myFitnessPal, this search has introduced approximately 14 different types of milk chocolate bar into my life since January . . . ????

Yes! I liked it very much! But the way the bars are all in random bits (different size/shape pieces) bugs me. Makes it difficult for me to figure out what a “serving” is.

    Today’s tea: Blueberry basil kombucha.

SOTD is Chanel No. 19 EDT (many thanks to hajusuuri!!)
It sort of fits this week’s theme because it puts me in mind of a mature, sophisticated, socially-savvy sort of woman. I, on the other hand, am an early-career, millennial introvert. Lol.

I think of Chanel perfumes as aspirational. No. 19 smells like a woman I might want to be when I grow up.

It was! My sister made me into a kombucha convert. It’s Kevita brand and I’ve found it in lots of different health food and grocery stores. It has just a little sweetness from the blueberry, and a kick of spicy pepperiness from the basil.

Cedre Sambac today, which is pretty glorious in the warmth.

Fun evening yesterday, with a surprise visit from a friend who lives down south: picnic supper and all the chat, and then a good old exploring rummage through the perfume collection. Turns out she likes a much more diverse range of scents that the “light pretty floral” she claimed, with some pretty fierce greens going home as decants, along with a couple of softer leathers. (The only hard nopes were the richer ambers and more austere incenses.)

CT Bruma today(many spritzes) since it calls for Spring-like temps like we’re having today. The more I wear it, the more I love it and I notice different facets with each wearing-like today I’m smelling the lavender. I’m slightly tempted to get another coffret since 2 from the set are being drained rather quickly…

Last I was browsing at Barney’s, the CT rep said he thinks they’re going to make 30ml sizes of the scents. Even then, I don’t think I could decide on one.

You smell great Robin! I’ll have to search out that after sun lotion.

I “caved” and bought a $3.99 10ml bottle of Sand & Sable at K-mart. I think it’s the perfect size for summer – if I had purchased the 2 bigger bottle gift pack, I would be resenting it knowing I would never finish it all.

I smelled a lot of the other cheapies, the Jovans and some others, and this is by far my favorite, it doesn’t smell sickly sweet or harsh to my nose. It reminds me of Jennifer Aniston’s first scent, the beachy one that reminds some people of Child perfume. So a cheapie-cheapie comparison, but still.

I read Angela’s smell-alike post from 6 years ago comparing it somewhat to Carnal Flower, I don’t get that (thankfully 🙂 but do smell the tuberose.

I was thinking about layering it with Azuree to try to concoct my own Bronze Goddess.

Today, I have it layered with Pacifica Indian Coconut Nectar (thank you CM8), and I’m giving off a lot of summer good vibrations. I hope someone notices, ha.

I’m wearing iris 39 today. I think this is my 4th sample? I guess it fits Opposite Day because usually if I finish a sample and still want more, I order a bottle. I haven’t purchased a bottle of this yet because I would really like to do it in person, but the closest le labo store is 9 hours away. Oh well, sometime when I’m in DC.

My apologies if someone has already mentioned this – Nordstrom now sells a 0.33 oz Tobacco Vanille Parfum Pen Spray for $55. I will be extremely excited if other Private Blend fragrances are offered in this format.

Your mention of Tobacco Vanille reminded me that I was recently exploring the Alexandria Perfumes website…they make their own perfumes but they also have “copies” of some high end niche…has anyone tried anything from this brand? The prices are extraordinarily reasonable (I believe $59 for 60 ml) and they also have a make your own sampler…..

Yes – get rid of the boots – even if you regret it – at least “regret” will be a novel feeling compared to the feelings of “not wanting to get rid of things”. I recently flooded my Facebook feed with lots of pages focusing on minimalism to steer my thoughts in this direction. My only problem is I need more time to get rid of stuff – I wish you a clear space and a clear mind !

Pretty freaking annoyed with work right now. The company that I work for sets down what kind of breaks we are entitled to. Yep, I work in retail. A manager had said that if I have someone else working with me in the department, all breaks must be taken before they leave. That’s great and all but not always possible since the person I have is the wandering sort. I was yelled at and told that they don’t feel like dealing with the department I work in. I am not sure what to do since this is not the general manager. I will see what happens today. I think that I will wear no 19 in edt form for backbone.

Hey Dawn, fellow retail worker here. I hate the break/lunch rules. My boss recently made a rule that all breaks have to be done by 7 o’clock. Doesn’t work, especially with a 9 hour shift. Anyway, if you have a wanderer, my suggestion is to page them when it’s break time. If they don’t show, page a manager. They have to give you your break, it’s the law, and should be in your employee handbook. For the little amt we make, I wish they would quit messing with the breaks. Good luck!

      1) Against the law

      2) Talk to your fellow co worker regarding breaks and lunch periods if they are the wandering sort;

      3) Unions.

Rest and meal breaks are governed by state law and not federal law. Do check the Department of Labor website which has links that contain info on state law.

Hello NST folk! Fraternal greetings from the London-Birmingham train, where I have been sipping rose wine (not quite cold enough) and emailing various contacts. The beautiful sunny weather really shows the English countryside at its most charming, so I have also been distracted just looking out the window at fields and canals and trees as they flick past.

I am still looking for a next contract, which was not the plan for this late in the month, but not time to panic yet. :^D

Malaga apartment is 1 week away from being finished so we shall need to fly out soon. Might be taking some blow-up beds with us as it won’t be furnished and, for all its many advantages, Andalucia is not the kind of place where you order furniture in the morning and have it delivered by the afternoon. (Unless you buy IKEA, but I kind of feel we’ve been there and done that and would rather good stuff this time round, thanks).

I was down in London at a networking event with a big 4 consultancy last night and forgot to pack any perfume for today. So I am inadvertently ‘on trend’ for the community project, as wearing nothing at all* is the opposite of what people would expect of me.

*calm down people, only talking perfume here. I promise I am legal, decent, honest and truthful.

That cup and saucer… like the colours and the glazes, but otherwise they are ALL WRONG. The saucer can’t catch any spills! The handle can’t be held! Why? :^D

I had the exact same reaction to the cup and saucer. All form, no function.

Well, years ago I would drive but London now is ridiculous for motorists (slow traffic, entry toll, eye-watering parking charges). It is my little treat to myself to de-stress by travelling first class by train.

After traveling around Italy by train over the holidays this past year, I don’t know why anyone would do otherwise, where it is an option! Coffee/wine/snacks, a paper to read (albeit in Italian), friendly service, and lightning fast! So civilized.

I wish our regional governments were forward-thinking enough to put in highspeed commuter lines in my part of the world!

ME TOO. One of my biggest gripes of daily life in California. I don’t think there’s a single similarly-sized metropolitan area in Europe with as little public transit infrastructure as the Bay Area. Grump.

I’m north of you in Portland. My grand dream would be a system of highspeed trains that connects metro areas from Vancouver, BC down to the Bay Area.

Sampling Hiram Green’s Dilettante this morning, which – with it’s “lush garden” vibe – is definitely opposite my scorchingly dry desert environment.

Giving a shout out for some comedy shows I’ve recently watched on Netflix – Ali Wong (Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife) and Hannah Gadsby (Nanette). I watched Nanette last night, and it’s still having an effect on me this morning. I didn’t know anything about Hannah Gadsby before watching the show, and it was both hilarious and heart-wrenching.

I’ve been meaning to watch those, but I’m hesitant because I can only imagine how heart-wrenching Nanette must be. I saw and LOVED her in Please Like Me (go watch it! it’s wonderful!), and then heard an interview with her on Fresh Air, I think. I really like her.

I really liked her, too. Nanette is without doubt worth watching, but it is not a standard comedy routine. It is definitely funny, and it keeps being funny while a huge amount of tension builds up. Then it gets pretty searing, in a completely unfunny way. You won’t regret the watch, though.

Ali Wong, on the other hand, is super easy. Lots of giggles and snickers, but no tears.

Sotd is Glossier You. This one is really growing on me.

Canoe day! Who knew?! I was just out in our canoe on Saturday. My husband and I do a lot of canoeing but Saturday we also took our youngest along. I sat in the middle and let the two of them do all the paddling. Ha! My kids are all excellent paddlers as a result of time spent at summer camp. After 12 years (and counting) of summer camp tuition, I felt like I earned that free ride.????

    Happy Tuesday!

    1) Beautiful morning and it will be a perfect, perfect summer day: 76F, mixed clouds and sun.

    2) Of course, I am in Cap Neroli and I washed my hair with Rose Jam. I smell great, I think!

    3) And Now is the time here on Sprockets for not one, but TWO mini reviews of fragrant products:

    a) Vintner’s Daughter: This skin serum has a combo of 22 different oils and oil distillates, in a base of grapeseed oil. You get a distinct and rather lovely spicy/floral fragrance that very gently persists for a few hours. This serum has an astringent quality, despite being an oil, and has indications that it can help protect the skin barrier and over time repair it. I had a bad breakout of acne and some PIH that came along with it (during to shifting hormones after surgical procedures) and used some rather harsh remedies that further exacerbated the irritation and further PIH. After stopping with all that, I used this AND Drunk Elephant C-Firma- VD at night, C-F during the day, under day lotion. I have seen good results- gentle toning of skin, the PIH has receded and faded gently and skin feel incredibly soft and smooth. HOWEVER: I did stop using the harsh treatments, I did stop using Retin-A, and I used a day lotion with SPF 15. So I while I think that VD is effective, I think that it is marketing towards men and women who have scoured their skin with harsh chemical treatments, lasers and microdermabrasions and who need to help rebuild their skin, and who don’t mind paying luxury prices for an oil serum.
I was just gifted a couple of bottles (friends in HWOOD!) and I bought a bottle. It is $180 per bottle. I will not be repurchasing; instead I will use rosehip oil when I run out.

    b) Uma Wellness Oils: These are LOVELY- and why did I not know about them before? I bought these on sale a couple of days ago at Anthropologie. Each wellness oil is a blend of fragrant oils in a jojoba base, and it’s purpose to uplift, ground or calm the spirit. It’s concentrated, so you only a need a drop or two on pulse points and on the soles of the feet to help with whatever troubles your spirit. The quality of the oils are superb. I think this would be great to have in a desk drawer for a mid day pickup instead of tea or coffee. Expensive af BUT since they are a blend of true essential oils, made in India by workers paid a fair wage & healthcare, this is an expense that is worth it. $80/bottle or $40 for the sampler set. I got my bottles, Bliss and Energy, on sale at Anthropologie for $39 each.

Cold pressed rosehip oil is perfectly fine for most folks with combo to dry skin, TBH! But I did find that VD was incredibly comforting and effective- so if your mom can spring for it, I say go for it! 🙂

Maybe I’ve asked you already, but how do you like Cap Neroli? Is it more classically orange blossom cologne like Neroli Portofino, or is it more of a floral blend?

        Hey there!

Cap Neroli is NOT like Neroli Portofino- it lasts longer, for one! For second, it’s both floral AND herbally- a crisp green citrus with a beautiful ylang/jasminy heart.
The crisp herbal beginning and the slightly ambery dry down makes this very sexy and unisex. I called this the “Armie Hammer summer perfume” (after his performance in Call Me By Your Name- also the Portrait) – sunny, quite beautiful, and subtly persistent.

Ede, is the rosehip helping with the acne and PIH? If so I will recommend to middle Marzipan…she was on a low dose of Retin A for quite some time but had to stop as it was really irritating her already sensitive skin (and Lord knows I cannot afford the Vitner’s Daughter so I WON”T even mention it to her!)

        Ha!

Okay , so I am still using VD about 2x a week, and the rest of the time rosehip oil. It’s a little heavier than VD and not astringent but it does help with PIH, and it is a leading ingredient in VD.

Having said that: If your mini marzipan has a low dose Retin-A or equivalent, have the mini use it only 2x a week, with rosehip oil teh rest at the time, at night only and after washing the face THOROUGHLY. Gently massage in the oil while teh face is still damp (unlike Retin-A, where you have to wait for the face to dry) Just a few drops at a time.

She has extremely sensitive skin and was using the low dose REtin A only at night every third night…it was just too much so she stopped using it. I am going to tell her to try the rosehip seed oil…right now she is using jojoba as it seems to be the least troublesome but I think the rosehip might be better…thanks for the advice!

Rosehip oil has a lot of anti oxidants, including beta carotene, so your Mini Marzipan may find it better to use. Jojoba is very soothing, but the rosehip oil is soothing and healing to the skin.

Hmm. I just looked up PIH and realized that that’s what those dark splotches on my legs are (from ingrown hairs, from waxing). Do you know if rosehip oil should help with those kinds of non-facial dark splotches? Sounds expensive to slather my legs with the stuff, but I don’t really want to use chemical exfoliants….

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris edt

Wore this one last night. Why am I in the habit of wearing it only in the evening? So good post-shower, nicely soothing. It feels calming this morning and deserves more daytime outings.

Next I will work up the courage to wear No. 5 in the early hours, that one almost never comes out until evening too.

Thanks Lilyjo! It’s a beauty! Beauty Habit used to sell it. Not sure if they still do. I bought mine when they offered a discount code.

I have a hard time letting go of things too. I have really nice expensive clothes from my single-girl days. I think it’s the memories tied to them. I do get rid of a little each year but still manage to keep too much stuff. I think it’s a process.

I’m pretty good with clothes, because I hate buying them, unless necessary, but I’ve held on to my younger years clothes too, things that are now vintage, but I would never wear again. It is a process, it’s like letting go of a part of yourself. I vow to be ruthless though.

I really admire you. I’ve got a lot of clothes that I should get rid of–out of fashion, no longer the right size (I’ve fluctuated a lot over the past years), and being retired means I need fewer good clothes. I also feel attachment to some things just due to memories. Becoming aware of my mom’s problems in cleaning out her house to get ready to move into assisted living has also made me much more conscious of my need to de-clutter. (She’s always been good at it and STILL has problems.) I recently learned of a group of younger women who hold occasional clothes swaps, so I’m donating several bags of my nicer things to them. I’m happy they can use them and they will probably enjoy some of them since they’re into vintage (I’m afraid some of my old things count now!) and also the group includes people of varying sizes.

It’s because of yours and LizzieBs experiences that have motivated me, even though 6 years ago I had to go through my moms stuff, you guys made me realize I really don’t want anyone to go through my stuff some day. And really I need to focus on today and quit holding on to the past.

I was recently given an Atelier Cologne coffret, with mostly different scents to the ones I’ve tried before. Going with Bergamot Soleil today, fully in keeping with the sunny weather. It smells nice, but is much more fleeting than most of their scents.

What About Adam is supposed to be a phenomenal fragrance…I think it also has tomato leaf if I am not mistaken? Chris of Scentland (youtuber) raves about it….I rather like the Joop! fragrances…I had both Femme and the male version in my wardrobe in the late 80s/early 90s.

SOTD is Eric Buterbaugh/EB Florals Apollo Hyacinth. This is the last pick from the 6 months of Scentbird that my brother and sister-in-law gave me for Christmas. I’m trying to decide if I’m going to keep going with it.

I like Apollo Hyacinth. It’s nice and cool and green, which is good because it’s hot and nasty outside. Too bad it’s so expensive, but I’m sure the scentbird sample will be enough to last me for a good while.

Ostara for me today. Not opposite anything. Just was in the mood.

Walked down to my favorite theater to see the movie about Fred Rogers. I was too old for his show, but I watched it sometimes as an adult. My favorite way to watch was in my hotel room on business trips. He was calming. One of my favorite episodes was him visiting a schoolroom and its teacher just before the school year started. His purpose was to give kids going to school for the first time a tour in advance so they’d feel more comfortable. He really did have a knack for getting into kids’ heads.

I think I’ve mentioned on here (maybe not?) that I used to live in his neighbourhood, literally! That is, I lived on the street of the Public TV station in Pittsburgh where he filmed, and we could see him every morning parking his car and strolling down the street to do his shows. That was kind of cool!

Yes, it is! This one is going to be a 2-step dye job. Today was the lighter color. Tomorrow, I rinse it out and apply the dark blue in some of the spots that did not get the first color. It takes a while, but applying the colors in sequence is worth it.

Hello everyone, I guess I’m not like most of you with trouble sleeping because I managed to sleep till noon again! I have become a night owl lately. Lots of kitty company in bed is very soothing. This morning, I mean this afternoon, I’m wearing MFK A Part of Me or APOM. It has really grown on me, such a beautiful rose. I got my 20% off coupon from Ultra and might venture out into the torrid weather outside to pop over to the store and buy one of those gorgeous emerald green bottles of Aura.

So, I went there and bought it, but forgot the coupon. I am going to go back tomorrow and take the coupon and ask for a refund. I thought they’d have a record of it on the computer but they didn’t. I sprayed lavishly in the store and do like it. I’m getting heavy bergamot and vanilla, like some nice summer ice cream bar! Also very light orange blossoms. It’s a pretty fragrance, which is a plus, but I truly bought it for that bottle, since green is my favorite color.

SOTD = Guerlain Baiser de Russia

It is not the opposite of anything that would apply to me unless you consider AG Heyerdahl Exquise it’s opposite. You see, I tend to decant some perfumes into travel atomizers and the type I used for these were the same and I picked up the Guerlain “by mistake”. Anyway, I smelled good.

I have to really think about what perfume to wear for the CP this Friday!
