Monday scent of the day 6/4

Posted by Robin on 4 June 2018 261 Comments

Don't look now, but it's Monday again. If it helps, it's also Hug Your Cat Day and Cognac Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: a little dab of McQueen by Alexander McQueen.

Reminder: on 6/8, wear one of your "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2018 campaign.

It’s Lemon Day for me, because I a wearing two lemon scents for the community project: Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien and Profumum Roma Acqua Viva.

And now I am off to hug my cat…

I love Eau d’Hadrien. I’ve been eyeing 15 ml minis on eBay, which are shaped just like the full size bottles, so cute. I’m not familiar with the Profunum…tell me more?!

Acqua Viva is often compared to Eau d’Hadrien, and I agree that they are similar. Both are lemon/cypress scents with emphasis on lemon. AV, however, has a more intense lemon note, whil EdH in comparison smells drier and has a more noticeable woody/herbal accord. In my opinion, AV has the strongest, the most concentrated lemon note I have ever tried.

If you love EdH, I think you’ll like AV. If you cannot get enough of lemon scents, you must try AV.

I like them both a lot, but think AV is too pricey.

Hug your cat day? Did a dog invent this as a sneaky revenge plot? I am wearing Dior-Dior and I’ll be respectfully giving my cat a tummy rub if she requests it.

Y’know – they tell you not to wear perfume but there really isn’t any reason not to that I can discern (the place I go to provides wipes – and heated robes (!)). And actually I think my clinic stopped telling us not to wear perfume and deodorant a few years ago.

I should get my results next week, but since it was just a routine mammogram, I don’t anticipate any problems. I wonder if the request to skip the perfume is to spare perfume phobic clinicians performing the scan. The first mammogram I had in the 21st century, I hadn’t gotten the info on not wearing perfume. I was trying Womanity for the first time, and I oversprayed. I should have known better with a Thierry Mugler.

I think it was due to some interaction with getting precise images. But I’m wondering if that warning stopped once clinics went to using digital imaging? Not sure. I was always told not to use perfume OR deodorant, so it wasn’t an issue of not offending with scent but rather preventing some kind of interference.

Not ready for summer perfumes yet. The temperatures will be in the 60’s the whole week.
I am in Dame Gardenia (thanks LTSG).

Long week ahead since I worked during the weekend, so coffee and a positive attitude in order to survive 🙂

Yesterday, in my way back home I made a quick stop at Saks 5th Avenue and I was very impressed with the new Beauty Department on the second floor. It is very well organized, lighted, extremely neat and sophisticated. The sales associates were very kind and helpful. It is worth a visit. I will go back again when I have enough time to spend there and enjoy it.

Good to know about SFA. Every time I have gone in there the SAs were either rude, did not give me any samples (nor let me make my own samples a la hajusuuri) or completely ignored me as if I wasn’t even there (looking at you le labo)…apparently I was a book being judged by its cover in my casual clothes, sneakers and backpack. After reading about the move and all the lines they are now carrying I was hoping that the SAs would also be a bit kinder and helpful as I am tempted to give it one more shot.

It’s so funny how they would judge a customer by what they are wearing. I work in a relatively low end store, and I’ve seen people come in half naked and to the extreme, a wedding dress. All of them spend money. We judge more on if someone is a jerk or not ( and by jerk, I mean a totally different word)????

I was very clear with the SAs that I was not purchasing anything, just exploring their new floor. A Guerlain SA offered free samples, without a purchase, just in case I wanted to try and come back later on. I was surprised. I agree that clothes make a big difference and I hate that. I was not in formal clothes yesterday, so I just wondered for how long they will keep that attitute. I guess the “opening”is just too recent and they want to give a good impression for the time being…

For white flower aficionados out there, yesterday I used a new-to-me detergent: Le Blanc Silk & Lingerie Wash, in White Flowers fragrance. Need to properly launder my new silk pillowcases, and this stuff scented my entire house! Didn’t linger in the fabric suffocatingly, thank goodness. Nice pillowcases, unfortunately I still wake up with bedhead 🙁

Eau d’Hadrien for a hot desert day.

I have three elderly cats, two of whom are near the end. They get extra hugs every day, but I’ll try for extra-plus today.

I had to laugh at myself yesterday – I have a rollerball that I hate (the mechanism, not the scent) and I wondered if I could decant it. I Googled around AND watched a YouTube video in order to discover that you can very easily just pop the rollerball out. What a brave new world . . .

And now i want to hug a cat!

The cat of one of our neighbors used to visit us a few times a week, for hugs and cuddles, and to hunt mice in our kitchen. Yay. But lately another new cat became ‘top cat’ of our block and we suspect he has conquered the part of her domain that she uses to climb to our balkony. I do not even know her name but I really miss her!

SotD is Jardin sur le Nil, from a sample.

To clarify…she stopped visiting us, I still spot her in the gardens on the other side of the block, and I hear the cats growl and hiss at each other at night.

Hug Your Cat Day makes me miss having a cat! I had a kitten, briefly, but she did not adjust well to living in a small apartment, so she is now a happy outdoor cat living at my boyfriend’s parents’ place (they have many acres of land in rural Michigan plus a heated garage with a cat door, so they’ve become something of an oasis for stray cats).

Anyway, SOTD is from a sample of MFK Petit Matin. It’s a perfectly lovely summer frag, but every time I wear it, I somehow feel like I’m wearing someone else’s perfume.

My cat Otto and I do “morning brushes” every morning after his breakfast, and he is remarkably demanding the rest of the day, so dispensing of cat affection happens pretty much all the time at my house.

Kinda like biscuit day, a while back. Every day at my house.

Morning brushes! You spoil Otto 🙂 If I were more disciplined about waking up earlier, I’m sure my cats would loooove morning brushes. They have to settle for brief morning scritchies and kisses.

We have morning brushies (yeah, I know) here, too, with Stella. If you pick up her brush, she will follow you wherever you go with it. And if you “forget” the morning brushies, she will sit by her brush and remind you, loudly.

Missing my old (she lived to be 20) kitty on Hug Your Cat Day. As my son developed a cat allergy later in her life, she may have been the last under my roof, sadly. He’s contemplating seeing an allergist for vaccinations, as he would like a cat as much as I. Fingers crossed, but not pushing him either way : ) She was an excellent hugger, and our nearest neighborhood cat is a skittish hunter who wipes out all fledgling birds, chipmunks etc. in the neighborhood, so he’s not tops on my affection list, though I do know it’s the nature of the little beast ; ) Going for a tooth extraction today, so may skip the fragrance until afterwards, then go with something warm and comforting… possibly Hypnotic Poison. Anxiously awaiting samples of DK Black Cashmere and EL Private Collection – starting to anticipate and plan for the fall line up now that we’re (supposedly into summer). LOL.

Not sure how I missed this one! I stumbled across this and the Signature fragrance, which was also intriguing, at an outlet plaza, both in lovely tall dark glass bottles. Trying to track down a sample online of Signature, but it’s not easy to find. I really need a good test drive before I take the plunge on anything – even at discount outlet rates. Thanks for the endorsement – hoping it’s in by Friday! : )

We had a calico, she made it to 19 years, we still miss her. Alas, after two decades on litter box duty I told my kids they can have cats when they are living on their own, and I will come and visit them to spoil my grand-cats.

Best wishes to you as you say bye-bye to that tooth. 😉

Ha! Litter box duty is certainly not fun. Thanks for the wishes… glad it’s gone. It has been broken and causing irritation for some time – a tooth I had a root canal done on years ago but disregarded advice for the crown that should have followed. They were right, however! The tooth does break down over time, and now I’m paying the piper : (
Still, am going to try to soldier on with a gap there, as bone grafting, an implant and crown will total over $6,000.00 on my pitiful insurance plan. ack!

It’s not quite summer today–more like Spring, which is fine, since it means I can wear a BWF without it being overwhelming. So, Carnal Flower for me today.

Our two cats died several years back, and we have not gotten any others. However, since it’s been warm lately, there’s a ground-floor apartment in my neighborhood that keeps its windows open, and their cat sits happily in the window most of the time and greets all passers by. WindowKitty is very friendly, and very smart, as s/he knows not to jump down to the sidewalk.

My ground-floor neighbor has a cat too. He leaves the window open without a screen, so the cat can roam the courtyard as he pleases. If he’ll let me, I give him a pat whenever I see him 🙂

My sister had a cat years ago in her 2nd floor apartment. She’d leave the bathroom window open and the cat would climb down to the street to roam. Sis finally had to bring her fully inside because the cat kept going in the downstairs apartment where a very elderly lady lived. The cat got stuck in there once and Sis had to use the spare key to sneak in while the lady was sleeping to get the cat out. I loved that cat…such a character.

It lasts all day, even on my Mature skin, and I always thought it does better in cooler weather. The reformulation broke my heart. My 19 yr. old cat died almost 2 yrs. ago & I don’t know about another.

Seville a L’Aube for me today, since my sister isn’t around to say it smells of corn tortillas.

Lovely, relaxing weekend visit with an old friend (gads…is it almost 40years since we met?). She’s been trying to get me to come over to her place in Marin, so I finally did – turned out a church I wanted to visit is walking distance from her home. Saturday dinner outside under redwood trees at a local restaurant. Visited with her son before he left for a quick vacation…oh my! I remember when he was born…he’ll be a senior in college next year – he’s always been sweet but now it’s a quiet maturity. Sweetest golden retriever ever. Late Sunday happy hour eating pĂątĂ© and drinking beer outside at a local bistro.

I do miss my kitties but will see them later this week. My husband took care of the hugs yesterday. Texted me a photo of one cat laying on the couch next to him. The two others were on each of his legs as he watched basketball.

On my 3rd week of a cold, but a lot of my sense of smell is back (thank goodness!), so it’s time to make some headway on this pile of sample vials. Working in the theme this week by trying out samples with a summery connection. Today is Vince Camuto’s Ciao, which is light but with a surprising amount of sillage. Woody musk, inoffensive florals, pinkish berries. Not my thing, but it’s supposed to “represent the warm rays of the Italian sun,” so at least it’s keeping that pleasant mental picture in my mind all day. 🙂

It’s dreary and cool today – definitely spring. I have a summer fave picked out for Friday as long as the weather cooperates. Today I’m wearing SSS Equestrian for the first time from my new decant (another perfume nerd hosted a split). I love it! The apple top note is lasting longer on my neck and chest than it did on my wrists.

I know I’ve made a lot of June farmers markets runs in fleece jackets, but I can’t say I recall regretting putting my down parka into storage this time of year. Is the better longevity of Equestrian on neck and chest explained by wearing a turtleneck, perhaps?

I’m glad you asked. I almost put it in my original post but didn’t know if I was overexplaining.

I do put moisturizer and/or unscented sunblock on my chest, so I think that helps me retain perfume longer. Also, I had to wear a rain jacket this morning with cinched wrists, so the freshly applied perfume got rubbed and so the top notes broke down faster.

Nice thing about my office mate being on vacation is that I can reapply perfume midday!

EVERY day is Hug My Cats Day. My cats are usually less thrilled about being treated like stuffed animals than I am to do it.

Not a top summer scent for me today–I’m still working through my SSS treasures. Yesterday I wore Yin & Ylang, which is probably the most beautiful rendering of ylang I’ve ever smelled (I’m not usually a ylang person at all! I think it smells like sunscreen, though I expect the reality is that sunscreen smells like it). Today I’m wearing Nostalgie, which is just the loveliest old-school chypre with a sparkle. It does remind me of a poor man’s Champagne de Bois, though, so I’m ok with just my small travel spray of Nostalgie. (Now, when my CdB runs out–THEN I’ll cry. There is no aldehyde like that one.)

Thanks for your concern about my nonfunctional thumb/possible carpal tunnel! I’ve been wearing a wrist brace all weekend and guzzling ibuprofen. My hand is doing much better now, but there’s still occasional pain, so I might go to a doctor if this continues for a few more days 🙁 Regardless, it seems manageable!

Please go to a doctor if you can do it. Taking too much ibuprofen is not the best thing and may be masking true issues with your hand. please do take care.

Thanks, Ede–I do agree with your view of ibuprofen in general, but since I think the pain is coming from inflammation, I thought that taking the ibuprofen (which is anti-inflammatory) would actually be treating the issue rather than masking it. It’s possible that the underlying cause of inflammation isn’t just going to disappear with time, though, in which case I will need to take your advice :-/

My guess is do both… get the inflammation down and then see about the underlying problem to ensure it doesn’t become chronic or worsen.

PT: “Okay, you have an impingement- a simple one. I can help you. Get ready.”
Me: “Get ready for w-*SCREAMS LIKE A BANSHEE*
          PT: “How do you feel?”
Me: *rolls shoulder* “Oh, my God, the pain is gone! Amazing!”

    2) For the first time, in a very long time, I did an early morning workout. It was energizing and made me feel great. When I had my health issues I really could not get out of bed to do a exercise routine other than stretching. It was really nice to feel vital in my body again and being able to function – albeit slowly- the way I used to.

I was not a morning person UNTIL I started working in film in my 20s, when we would sometimes have stage call at 330 AM (to set up for ‘night filming’ at 5 AM).

And oh yes- the difference in exercise early in the morning vs at the end of the day is palpable. I can make due with just my one cafe au lait.

Had a relaxing weekend at home which made coming to work today quite difficult. worked in my yard a lot which I love. I made a refreshing pitcher of watermelon margaritas yesterday and they were soooo good! Will definitely be making more this summer.

Rocking one little spritz of Fracas today (thanks to a super generous NSTer). I can see why this one is so loved. I wanted much more than one little spritz but didn’t want to freak out any co-workers haha.

I’m wearing Hiris today. My school’s graduation was this morning, and it was such a treat to see the little kids I taught as freshmen walk across the stage as graduates, ready to fix the world. The speeches were so inspiring. A day like this is definitely one of the best rewards for teaching.

However, I had to wake up at 4 am to get ready, so this afternoon will be painful.

SotD = 4711 because it will be warm today and I splash it on often in the summer.

Some may say it doesn’t count as a perfume, but I love colognes all the more for their fleeting nature. 4711 is a classic everyone should try at least once.

Later today or tomorrow I’ll layer Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat over Terracotta Le Parfum. I’ve always wanted Terracotta to have a bit more citrus, and this might be the way to make it happen. Wish me luck.

It works nicely! The citrus in Terracotta is so light, I’ve always wished it had a bit more. Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat is all citrus top notes. Spritzing them together smells good, and refreshing with a little more EdFdC later revives the flowers and vanilla in Terracotta.

Good morning. Wearing L’Occitane Eau de Miel. I put it on before checking here on the project – not one of my summer faves, but good for times like today when I have a headache but still want to wear something.

I’ve got a serious case of the Mondays. Firstly, ants. All over our house. As soon as we stop them in one place, they just pop in somewhere else (our house was built in 1924 so it’s just one big crack!). We’ve been managing with various toxic (boric acid) and non-toxic (diatomaceous earth) methods, but now they are in the kitchen sink and no place to put any stuff. 🙁

Second, I have a headache because I recently figured out that I can’t drink more than 1 alcoholic beverage without getting a brutal headache the next day. Either age, hormones (related to age), or maybe meds, though I haven’t started anything new at the same time I started noticing these headaches. I’m no heavy drinker but I really enjoy having a few beers or the cocktails and I’m pretty unhappy about it.

I know these are minor annoyances in the grand scheme of things, but they are getting me down today. To a better tomorrow. Thanks for letting me vent!

They are persistent! I almost admire their tenacity. But yes, I feel like our house must be directly on top of some insane colony by the sheer numbers I’ve seen (and know that is only the smallest percentage of how many there actually are that we don’t see!).

If you can afford it, get a pest specialist out to your house. I have a newer build house and the ants still find their way in. The pest specialist made it like night and day. Yes, it’s chemical warfare BUT those ants don’t pay rent at your place!

We are renters and I doubt the landlords will spring for it given their normal MO – I should try and push for it and maybe just pay for it ourselves if they don’t, for our own sanity.

We had persistent ant issues (in an apartment, which presents different issues than houses) and the bi-weekly treatments from the exterminator were totally ineffective until I convinced him that the ant problem OUTSIDE was even worse than it was indoors. He sprayed the yard around our apartment and that seemed to keep the population down.

That said, it wasn’t clear at the time that that’s what actually did the job – it’s possible that it was coincidence.

    Good morning peeps!

I’m wearing Fort and Manle’s Maduro on one hand. Its a complex lovely tobacco gourmand scent but its also sort of quiet. It reminds me alot of House of Matriarch in terms of subtleness. I like it overall. I think this is an actual improvement over Xerjoff’s Naxos, although the latter has far better performance.

Wearing Hermes Citron Noir on the other hand. Now that summer is cooling down, I can finally detect the sinus burning Ambroxan drydown everyone is complaining about. It smells like a bloody Creed now!

I’m wearing Bergamote 22 in an effort to clear off the top of my dresser. The sample spritzer was about 1/3 full and I put it all on. That was about 20 minutes ago and I can barely smell it now. I like it but won’t be buying any.

My SOTD is Areej le Dore Ottoman Empire, from a kind fellow NST-er. Wow! This stuff is something else, very potent, golden, sweet, insidious, gorgeous. Out and rose plus something else floral that’s just so beautiful, it might be the frangipani. It feels like something you don’t just want to sniff, you want to lick up.
Since I have a lot of cats (in the double digits) there’s usually one who lets me give hugs. I hugged Armani the Persian this morning. Like most Persians he is affectionate and very laid-back so he enjoyed it.

Gosh, I had to drop by Nordies yesterday for something (hehehe) and went to Diptyque counter where I liberally sprayed on Volutes EDP.

There’s a beauty/ fragrance something or other coming up at the end of June so I will wait and buy and get what ever free stuff is being given out.

I also stopped by Tom Ford, they have new fragrance coming out for the Anniversary sale in July. Fougere D’ Argent. 235 clams, no description.

The weather is forecast to improve in the next couple of days, but today I’m glad the tunic-length cashmere turtleneck I bought online that arrived last week didn’t go straight into winter storage as I had planned. I’m wearing it for the 2nd day in a row.

SOTD is Dior Mitzah from the Feb splitmeet. I was thinking it smelled different today in warmer weather than it did when I got it, then realized the outside temp has only increased by about 5 degrees compared to when I was testing it in late winter.

I’m generally envious of people who live in other parts of the country this time of year who are enjoying summer temps while we still have another month to get there. Looks like today we’re (almost) all in the same boat. ❄ Also doesn’t help that yesterday I had my hair shorn – from chin-length to about 1″ at the longest pieces. I need ear muffs!

Oh, gosh, don’t be jealous of us, now into our second week of humid mid-90-degree days. To get this hot in May and early June is rather unusual and has us all really dreading the dog days of summer. I was amazed when I spoke to my mom in Michigan last night and she said it was still too early for the peonies to come out. !! I’d love to be able to put on something cashmere right now. I guess the grass is always greener.

I was referring to parts of the country that have seasons 😉 and enjoy sunny, warm spring temps in spring (as opposed to my part of the world where spring is a nasty, cold, long and miserable extension of winter where we cannot expect consistently warm weather until mid-July.)

The only time I envy people in your part of the country is in winter. By which I mean autumn through spring 😉

You guys. I think I am falling in love with Lyric (Woman). I have had the sample for a while, and it didn’t excite me at first, but I put some on yesterday and again this morning, and I just want to keep smelling it. My husband loves it on me — and he doesn’t often comment on the fragrances I wear. I will keep tearing until the sample runs out, and will probably try to find a decent before I even think about a FB ($$$$!!!!), but…wow.

The weather turned downright chilly here in the Finger Lakes yesterday. Perhaps that is why I’m so taken with Lyric?

It was a sunny in Berlin, especially the evening, with around 25ÂșC. So I had a late coffee in a place around the corner that catches the last sun rays, musing about Guerlain’s AMBRE ÉTERNEL from the semi-exclusive Absolut D’Orient-line. I had just read that is to be discontinued, which made me think “again a fragrance I like is being discontinued!”. Opinions about AE are divided, as, apart from the really weird iodine-irisy-lactic opening, it is not the most memorable of scents, but it’s safe to say that with the relatively humane price level of the Absolut D’Orient and its quality ingredients AE is lightyears better and more interesting than all this year’s flankers considered together (e.g. Mon Guerlain Florale and L’Homme IdĂ©al Intense were major disappointments). Now, at 22 p.m., I am still surrounded by wafts of vannilla and driftwood. Grey, comforting, but at the same time sophisticated. Powerful woody aroma-chemicals meeting real ambergris (!) and all sorts of sweet powdery and faintly fruity notes, but way less aggressive and plasticky than Santal Royal. AE may also be less addictive and complex than Oud Essentiel, but the latter’s leathery geraniol-rose boosted by oud is most of the times simply too fruity and loud for me. AE was my favourite from the line.
R.I.P. Ambre Éternel, and let’s hope your new sibling Musc Noble will be a worthy heir.

None of the Absolu d’Orient scents really caught my fancy, but I do quite like their other set of arabic style scents, namely Songe d’un Bois d’ÉtĂ© and Encens Mythique d’Orient.

Yes, the DĂ©serts d’Orient! I can totally understand you. The Absoluts d’O are more trendy and “niche” while the DĂ©serts d’O have the potential to become classics. Songe was too similar to sth from Le Labo that I like, and, frankly, I think it stinks ;D but Encens Mythique is so far my favourite Wasser-era Guerlain fragrance!

Am enjoying the green notes of Sans Adieu (Worth). It’s such a wonderful summer scent.

    SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’Eau

Perfect for a day that does not know what wants to be. It was a wet coolish morning and it was equal parts gray and sunny throughout the day and it is now in the high 60s low 70s.

    Commuting Woes 432:

It normally takes me anywhere between 55 minutes to 75 minutes depending upon the synchronization of connections. Today, it took me 30 minutes longer due to signal problems. Had they mentioned a delay and estimated tube to resolve, I would not have gotten off at my regular stop and continued on for 2 more stops.

Things I cannot unsee. I think it’s not cold enough to wear a thick wool pea coat but hey, maybe the wearer is easily chilled. And as if the wool coat wasn’t enough, this grown woman was wearing …
Curious George earmuffs! Seriously? Yes, dead serious!

Commercial I saw last night – Botox for men. The commercial was all male, ranging in age fron low 30s to mid-60s.

Oh geez, you saw a commercial for “Brotox”! NPR was talking about that either this past weekend, or the weekend before.

Haha brotox! Now that I think about it, the mid 60s guy could have been in his 70s. Anyway, there was no noticeable before and after so methinks they just found the right models to be in the commercial.

Another hot, humid day. I’ve been in Aedes Signature today and most of the weekend. It’s great in the drydown, but the lead up has something that’s bothering me, but only a little bit. Cumin? Tomato leaf? I don’t know…

A crazy Monday.. glad it’s nearly in the rear-view mirror. My supervisor said “it’s been a long week” as he was packing up to go home – lol

My SOTE is Samsara EDT. Off to read everyone’s comments.
