Monday scent of the day 4/2

Posted by Robin on 2 April 2018 252 Comments

It's Monday, and it's International Children's Book Day plus World Autism Awareness Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm out of town taking care of some family matters. I'm commando, and posting will be sporadic the next couple days.

Reminder: on 4/6, wear one of your "top 10 of spring" fragrances (unless it's fall where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of fall" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Robin, I am sure you smell great even when you are commando.

Best of Spring..I am really loving Baiser de Russie

    Let it snow…Let it snow…Let is snow…

This weather makes me want to re-read Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima. Anyone have a similar read?

SOTD is Estée Lauder Private Collection. While I usually think of it as an autumn perfume, this bitter green floral feels right on a cold and grey spring day.

Scent twins! I love PC, but only seem to wear it in the spring. I’ll have to try it this fall.

I get the fall association because of the chrysanthemum note and overall melancholy feel of this scent. “November. A pale woman with a bunch of chrysanthemums. She has just returned from a wet garden, and water on the flowers’ petals and her cheeks might be rain… or her tears.” – This is the picture I imagine when I smell PC.
But of course PC has spring flowers, green and wet notes – very spring appropriate too.

Someone commented a few days ago asking about things that are similar to Black Cashmere… today I am sampling Zoologist Camel and I think it fits the bill! It’s certainly its own creature but the dried fruit and incense are there and it has a similar feel, to me.

It’s still in the 20s here in Minneapolis. Surely spring is just around the corner.

Wearing a little Bronze Goddess thanks to the lovely Perfumelover67. Looks like a sunny day before a week of rain here in Seattle so I will be taking my dog on a long walk.

I will definitely celebrate International Children’s Book Day – I have so many old favorites. Love Noel Streatfeild, Elizabeth Enright, Nicholas Stuart Gray, E. L. Konigsburg, and many more. I kept some of my old favorites even through our last big move. I suppose this sounds childish, but when things are really stressful, I reread my old favorites and find them calming.

The Magic Summer (special love for this one)

        Then There Were Five

        Nicholas Stuart Gray:

I was reading these in the late 60s, early 70s, so all may not be around. The E. L. Konigsburg is definitely still available. And I think you will particularly like it since much of it is set in the Metropolitan Museum in NYC.

Wearing Ashoka by Neela Vermeire. It is a comforting scent for me.

Also – reporting on LV’s Apogee – I’m sure the Lily of the Valley is very pretty on someone else, unfortunately it is not for me.

LV’s Mille Feux is however very interesting. It is wonderfully bright and despite the name, def a spring/summer scent.

      1. Farley Mowat: People of the Deer, The Desperate People, The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be, A Whale for the Killing, Never Cry Wolf, Sea of Slaughter, And No Birds Sang…

      2. The entire Black Stallion series by Walter Farley.

      3. Jack O’Brien: Silver Chief Dog of the North, The Return of Silver Chief, Silver Chief to the Rescue.

      4. Albert G Miller: Fury, Stallion if Broken Wheel Ranch, Fury and the Mustangs, Fury and the White Mare.

So. Any book about a disenfranchised animal befriended by a disenfranchised kid was right up my alley!

I’m in Alain Delon’s Lyra, which I bought after rereading The Guide. Has anyone else done this, trying peripheral perfumes that LT mentioned? So far I’ve tried Lyra and Ocean Rain, with Choc on the way.

Lyra is very pretty, sunny and warm. It has a kind of raspy texture that I really enjoy, though I don’t think I need more than the single ounce I bought.

    1) Meanwhile in Portland the flowers are showing their stuff, but shivering as they do so!

    2) Am in Prada Vetiver (from a mini dabber) because it really did seem perfect for today.

    3) Who else watched JC Superstar on NBC last night? Some minor quibbles with stage business but overall an AMAZING and solid cast! The Amazing Norm Lewis as Caiaphas! Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas! The tender and brilliant Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdelene! ALICE COOPER AS HEROD!
The stage nerdery last night was REAL.

As to 1) same in Seattle – lots of things in bloom (camellias are almost done with!) but man, was it cold this weekend!

As to 3) I recorded it and started to watch it but wasn’t into it. I was excited about it since I love John Legend. But my style of musicals is more the retro/fabulous genre that involves beautiful costuming, sets and staging, so the apocalyptic thing put me off. I had a really hard time with a recent production of Man of La Mancha. Maybe I’ll try it again…

JCS was always known for a very stripped down stage, with deceptively simple, modern-ish costumes ( Jesus himself is ALWAYS in white) and has always been a very loud, bombastic “rock’ style ( It’s a blend of modern operetta music & R&B). It’s one that people tend to either like or detest.

Musicals and even grand opera are having a time when the sets and even costuming is stripped down- it’s a reflection I think of the times.

It’s not a trend I’ve experienced with the dozen or so musicals I’ve seen in the past few years. But I’m just not a fan of the apocalyptic aesthetic. The costuming and sets for La Mancha were done in the same aesthetic. Not my thing.

SOTD is Balmain La Mome, which launched and went to the discounters faster than Usain Bolt can run the 100. I guess I’m the only one who liked it?

Favorite children’s books? Besides all the good ones others have mentioned, a few that come to mind: Harriet the Spy, Because of Winn Dixie, The Witch of Blackbird Pond (any of Elizabeth George Speare’s books really), and Richard Peck’s A Long Way from Chicago and A Year Down Yonder. If you haven’t read the Peck books, you have missed an absolute treat whether you’re nine or ninety.

Richard Peck is wonderful! My absolute favorite is So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane (about young wizards before it was cool to write about young wizards.) I’ll also shout out to The Boy at the End of the World by Greg van Eekhout and Nation by Terry Pratchett.

I loved Richard Peck’s Secrets of the Shopping Mall. This had the same effect that Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler had on me, but rather than living in the Met, I wanted to live in the mall! ;)

I was serious about Harriet the Spy. Loved those books. I *think* this might be one of those series that I only recently came to learn has as many detractors as fans. Does anyone here hate Harriet?

Another one is Nancy Drew. I was unaware that she is loathed by many until very recently.

I needed something comforting after the sick feral cat ordeal this weekend. He ended up dying overnight at the home of a gentleman who kindly offered to keep him overnight and bring him to the vet today. RIP Tony ????

SOTD is Hendley Bourbon in the newer EDC concentration. Bergamot, vanilla, woods, and oakmoss. I’m not a huge vanilla fan, but I really like this one. Smells very natural, also.

The cat looked ill, but didn’t quite act it, so I hope he didn’t suffer much his last days. He didn’t even freak out in the trap. Just kept eating calmly. Which maybe was a sign since a robust creature would have put up a fight.

Hendley: I think you’d like them. I haven’t tried Jade or Fume since they weren’t available at the time I ordered. I’m very curious about Fume. And, actually, Amora reminds me a little of Anemone come to think of it.

Yes, my sister has been part of a group that cares for feral cats where she lives and has done it for over 30 years including trapping and neutering and building shelters. One night about three years ago she sent me a picture of what looked like two glowing orbs in the dark.
Aha! a tiny black feral kitty she had picked up and brought home was under the bed!
Miso is now very domesticated and loved and has his indoor jungle on the screened in porch. She got him young enough.

I’m sorry, Elisa. We recently took in 3 tiny kittens at the shelter who were in the worst shape I’ve ever seen, just awful. They immediately went into foster care, and one died the first night. Awww. That’s sad. Kittens especially. The sad thing is, it’s really hard to find a place for sick ferals to get care and shelter, here at least. All the shelters we called said no. The animal hospitals wouldn’t keep it overnight. That was probably the most disheartening part of this experience.
I don’t think he was curable-bloodwork showed multi-system issues/failure and he had a mass in his mouth and possibly his abdomen. But, yes, it snowed here today, so at least he was somewhere warm.

Was in Prada Oeillet yesterday (from a Nordstrom sample). Actually made no impression, so will have to try again soon. (Could be allergies).

My Dad was woken up this morning at 7:01 am by one of those scamming sweepstakes callers that plagued my mom before she passed away. I wish I’d gotten to the phone faster – although probably better I wasn’t the one to answer. (I do like to tell them they are “a thief and a liar” because it is true.)

I love children’s literature. One of my favorite classes in college was on “kiddie lit”as we called it. Surprisingly challenging. I read all the Chronicles of Prydain as a result of that class. Re-read A Wrinke in Time. Still love Holes. Will make a note of springpansy’s list for future reading.

Laughing about possible snow in NYC. I remember one time about 15 years ago I left on a business trip beginning of April and it was lightly snowing. I came back a week later and the trees had budded. Spring…she is fickle.

Does a Wrinkle in Time hold up well? I haven’t read it since I was about 10. I’m kind of on the fence about seeing the movie. Not sure why, since I liked it as a kid. But it may have been one of those that I felt compelled to like because it was so highly regarded by adults.

I also took a “kiddie lit” class in college. I’m blanking on what we read other than The Secret Garden and Judy Blume’s Iggy’s House.

And those scammers ???? Although I’ve been scammed by legit tech aids fairly recently. I couldn’t get my printer to connect so I called the helpline and was under warranty, the guy did a remote check of my software etc and wanted to sell me $500 worth of services including more software telling me there was suspicioussoftware installed etc. Fortunately I had enough sense to tell them I need to check with my spouse on this. Turns out, it had nothing to do with my printer or computer. It was my Spectrum wifi which was having issues and that got resolved and so did my printer issue! So, now it’s also “take advantage of people who aren’t tech savvy, too”. Terrible. I called them back to let them know. It should be a felony. Or it is, but no one’s catching these people.

I’ve never gotten a sweepstakes or tech scam call but I got an odd one recently. It was a voicemail telling me I had some kind of legal issue with penalties that I needed to get cleared up stat until things got worse. My cousin’s name was dropped in the course of the call – a cousin I haven’t seen for 30 years but shares my last name, which was perplexing but surely intended to make me think the call was legit.

The caller didn’t leave a name, or the name of the organization, but wanted me to call a 1-800 number to get my “problem” resolved. That, frankly, was the tip-off.

I’ve gotten similar calls telling me to call a 1-800 number to talk to my doctor about medical issues. Uh, no. My doctors have direct, local phone numbers. And their nurses identify themselves when they call me.

I have doused myself in VCA Bois d’Iris from the swapmeet! I mean, DOUSED. Like, eight sprays or so. I’ve been really getting into iris lately. I feel like it’s a hard note to OD on, right? This scent is exactly as advertised: creamy, woody iris.

What are your favorite irises? Any other nice heavy, creamy irises? I love Iris Ukiyoe, but I’m looking for something less sheer right now.

My absolute favorite iris, although I wouldn’t call it creamy exactly, is L’Attesa. It’s rich and bubbly. I also love Iris Cendre, which requires a tolerance for smoke. So many more, but I’ll stop!

I will have to try that one out! (I also looked up the definition of “l’attesa,” and it translates to “the wait.” That makes me want to try it even more. What a great name!)

I actually have a sample of Iris Cendre I’ve been trying out lately! I do like it, but I don’t think it’s one of my favorites. I love smoke, but IC seems more…stale embers? ash? than smoke to me. I need to test it more.

I’d love even more recs; no need to restrain yourself!

Got back from LA sun to Boston snow early this morning and not about it! I like winter just fine, but it’s time to be over now.

But my full bottle of Niral was here and sprayed it is glorious. The Rose comes out more alongside the iris. I don’t get a strong tea note. It’s really beautiful to me and different from the other NVCs.

A new spring favorite. Also wore a lot of Dilittante this weekend, which a friend said smelled like happiness – and La Fille de Berlin. Ditto!

Late checking in today… had some errands this morning. Wearing Chanel No. 19 edp and smelling wonderful – the edp is so much friendlier than the Invisible Armor of vintage edt (not that I’d give that version up, I just needed friendlier today).

My list of beloved children’s books, from either my childhood or my children’s is long, LONNNNG, and contains too many great books to enumerate it. I will, however, mention Ruth Gannett’s wonderful “My Father’s Dragon.”

Loving this thread today with all the book recommendations! My favorites as a kid consisted mostly of junk like Sweet Valley Twins/High and I’m feeling like my exposure to good literature as a kid was seriously lacking. I did love Anne of Green Gables, C.S. Lewis and everything by L’Engle. We read “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown to our littles and are now in the middle of “The Wild Robot Escapes”. My husband mostly does the evening reading and even he gets excited to see what happens next.

Finished off sample of Le Cri today. I really like it. Probably not FB worthy, but it’s lovely.

SOTD is Areej le Dore Ottoman Empire. Wow is this stuff skanky. I have a small sample and applied several drops here and there before I realised that I was fast becoming quite stinky. And skanky. Wow, indolic jasmine, rich rose, oak moss, a very beautiful not sort of sour oud, and more oak moss. It smells like your dog just rolled around in the remains of really smelly animal. (I had a German-shepherd lab mix who used to do that.) And yet it’s nice. It’s beautiful. Not for the faint of heart! (Did I mention skanky?)

Hello, and best of good mornings from this last day of the Easter break. I’ve squandered it completely: with perfect aplomb and no guilt at all, I’ve done absolutely nothing, and it’s been wonderful. Most afternoons I’ve even taken a nap, and I’ve still managed pretty good sleep at night. I feel quite different and strangely reluctant to go back to work tomorrow.

My SOTD is Black Cashmere, and all those sweet woods and iris and jasmine and mandarin notes are winding their magic around me. It’s probably still too hot to enjoy BC properly, but I don’t care: it’s beautiful in all weathers, just a bit livelier in summer and lovelier in winter. Gorgeous! Eric seems to enjoy it— he’s snuggled hard against me and licking my arm rather too hard for comfort. Goodness, but his tongue is raspy! The two Stripies came by for morning inspection, sniffed, and departed rapidly, with their tails elevated in identical and perfect question marks. When I see them do that, I often wish I had a tail too that I could use to show that I’m feeling quizzical. How useful it would be!

Well, on that note, I should probably go and start my day. Be very well and happy, all.

Sounds like you spotted the “Happy Cat Tail” on the Stripies! Even single cat I have spent a lot of time with has its own special way of holding its tail in a curve when he/she is happy. From the tiniest curl at the very tip to a full-out corkscrew, it is as individual as our fingerprints. ????

Oh yes, cats’ tails are very expressive.

I re-read Phantom Tollbooth a few years ago and it was so much better as an adult than as a kid. The math concepts are so cleverly done, but a bit over the heads of most children, I think.

Other childhood favorites: Homer Price by Robert McCloskey, Fifteen by Beverly Cleary (as well as her other books but 15 was a particular favorite,) Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster. My aunt had a set of the Bobbsey Twins series, which I revered. Even as a kid I had a penchant for entertainments meant for an older generation than my own.

I also loved The Egypt Game and others by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. They had great cover art, which is what drew me to them. I was a voracious reader as a kid and my first job was in the Children’s Dept of my local library. It was a great first job and quite possibly the best job I’ve ever had, honestly.

Wearing Sylvanie Delacourte Florentina today. It is charming and couldn’t be more spring-y.

No snow here this morning, just an icky mix of precipitation that thankfully turned into all rain around 9 or so this morning. Bletch!

Favorite books as a kid: The Dr. Seuss books, which gave me a love of puns and wordplay that I have to this day; Beverly Cleary’s “Ramona and Beezus” series; “Heidi”; “Pippi Longstocking”; “The Hobbit” and the Lord of the Rings series, Piers Anthony’s “Xanth” books, and Robert Asprin’s “MythAdventures” series.

SOTD = Imaginary Authors Violet Disguise, from the sample stash and a generous NSTer. Ha! I didn’t even realize that I had matched my perfume to the book theme today! Violet Disguise strongly reminds me of Guerlain Insolence, so if you like that you might want to try the Imaginary Authors.

Totally off-topic but also adding this rant/PSA, as I’m sure I’m not the only Lord & Taylor/Saks/Saks Off 5th/Gilt shopper here:

Why did I have to learn about a security breach on the news instead of from these companies where I frequently shop? I have gotten about 20 emails from the above stores since Friday and NONE mention that my credit card number (which they automatically save to their websites) may have been stolen and sold on the dark web?

Obviously it’s too late now, but I went back and changed all of my passwords and deleted my CC #s, but really – even MyFitnessPal sent out security breach warnings and it’s not even a shopping site.

I’ve had this decant hanging around for a few years cause it’s not a favorite. All that to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I like the dry down much more than the opening.
I switched my fall/winter perfumes out for spring/summer frags over the weekend. My theory is that it caused the 4+ inches of wet snow we had this morning. Sort of like washing your car and then it rains.

Maybe it would have been a nice day for a baby or children’s scent, like Bvlgari Petits et Mamans or something like that.

    Two children’s book recommendations:
Stonewords-A Ghost Story. Well written and genuinely haunting, at least for older elementary and early middle school kids.
Frida (by Jonah Winter- there have been several childrens books about her)- cute, and lightly touches on the value of suffering.

That’s right, the EDT, not my usual EDP. I thought I would change things up for “spring” which today meant heavy wet snow this morning that pretty much melted away by the afternoon. I applied 7 sprays and it was virtually gone in about 5 hours, then briefly reappeared around hour 10. I do like it but it will not supplant my darling EDP!

      My favorite children’s books —
      – Bobbsey Twins
      – Nancy Drew, which I started reading as soon as my sister was able to check out books from the school library, I was in 2nd grade
      – Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators.
