It's Monday, and it's International Children's Book Day plus World Autism Awareness Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm out of town taking care of some family matters. I'm commando, and posting will be sporadic the next couple days.
Reminder: on 4/6, wear one of your "top 10 of spring" fragrances (unless it's fall where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of fall" scents).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Robin, I am sure you smell great even when you are commando.
Best of Spring..I am really loving Baiser de Russie
Let it snow…Let it snow…Let is snow…
This weather makes me want to re-read Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima. Anyone have a similar read?
Well thank you. Couldn’t believe there was snow this morning!
SOTD is Estée Lauder Private Collection. While I usually think of it as an autumn perfume, this bitter green floral feels right on a cold and grey spring day.
You smell lovely and I definitely see the spring connection!
Scent twins! I love PC, but only seem to wear it in the spring. I’ll have to try it this fall.
I get the fall association because of the chrysanthemum note and overall melancholy feel of this scent. “November. A pale woman with a bunch of chrysanthemums. She has just returned from a wet garden, and water on the flowers’ petals and her cheeks might be rain… or her tears.” – This is the picture I imagine when I smell PC.
But of course PC has spring flowers, green and wet notes – very spring appropriate too.
Oh, and I have the vintage EDP. Maybe the modern version is different, I did not try it.
What a beautiful description, I still haven’t tried this one.. tempted to blind buy now!
Oh your description is lovely – I need to get another bottle!!
I keep forgetting how lovely that is! Wonderful!
You smell lovely. I should wear this one soon, though I’d better keep it for the weekend. I think it’s too strong for me to wear to the office.
One of the most beautiful perfumes ever created ! I need to wear this more often 🙂
Someone commented a few days ago asking about things that are similar to Black Cashmere… today I am sampling Zoologist Camel and I think it fits the bill! It’s certainly its own creature but the dried fruit and incense are there and it has a similar feel, to me.
It’s still in the 20s here in Minneapolis. Surely spring is just around the corner.
I really like Zoologist’s Camel. Great for a cold day. And they have a few new scents on the way.
Geez, hope it warms up there! What a drag.
Wearing Chanel 18 today.
Hoping for a quiet, uneventful week.
Me too! Little ones are on spring break so it will be a tiring week for me
Easter holidays here, too, will be frazzled by the time they go back to school!
It is DARN cold here this morning, so I went with Vol de Nuit extrait. Warm and yummilicious.
You smell so good!
Stay warm in that gorgeous perfume!
Wearing a little Bronze Goddess thanks to the lovely Perfumelover67. Looks like a sunny day before a week of rain here in Seattle so I will be taking my dog on a long walk.
I will definitely celebrate International Children’s Book Day – I have so many old favorites. Love Noel Streatfeild, Elizabeth Enright, Nicholas Stuart Gray, E. L. Konigsburg, and many more. I kept some of my old favorites even through our last big move. I suppose this sounds childish, but when things are really stressful, I reread my old favorites and find them calming.
I love your list of books…
Taking notes!
LTSG – here are some of the books I love from these authors:
Noel Streatfeild:
The Family at Caldicott Place
The Magic Summer (special love for this one)
Elizabeth Enright:
Gone-Away Lake
Return to Gone-Away
The Saturdays
The Four Story Mistake
Then There Were Five
Nicholas Stuart Gray:
Grimbold’s Other World
The Apple Stone
E. L. Konigsburg:
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
The E.L. Konigsburg is one of my absolute favorites.
Same. I still want to live in the Met. Can you imagine? 🙂
Wow, thank you so much !
I was reading these in the late 60s, early 70s, so all may not be around. The E. L. Konigsburg is definitely still available. And I think you will particularly like it since much of it is set in the Metropolitan Museum in NYC.
The Four Story Mistake — wish I’d kept a copy of that! I just loved that book.
I think I heard mention of the E. L. Konigsburg book on NPR recently…
You smell good!
I like to keep Bronze Goddess in the fridge when I go to Hawaii and apply it after the shower all over the body.
Crocuses are blooming here in Boston, it was nice yesterday and is supposed to be in the 60s on Wed but today it’s snowing. I’m wearing L’Ambre des Merveilles which works with any version of New England spring
Great choice, and of course you smell fantastic.
Sotd is The Different Company’s Bergamote for this back to work Monday. Like most of JCE’s perfumes, I find it very pretty, but sheer and fleeting.
Yes, it is all of those things.
Wearing Ashoka by Neela Vermeire. It is a comforting scent for me.
Also – reporting on LV’s Apogee – I’m sure the Lily of the Valley is very pretty on someone else, unfortunately it is not for me.
LV’s Mille Feux is however very interesting. It is wonderfully bright and despite the name, def a spring/summer scent.
I have Mille Feux, definitely plan on wearing it this spring!
You smell great. I agree, there is something calm in Ashoka.
I agree with your characterization of Ashoka.
You smell good.
I like Ashoka, too!
LV Mille Feux is great. It is not getting a love of love 🙁
24 Faubourg edp vtg. Many sprays. Happy Monday. I used to read the Nancy Drew mysteries loved those. ????
Smelling wonderful!
Thank you ☺️
I was a big Nancy Drew fan too, my older sister had a big collection. I remember looking up “roadster” in the dictionary, couldn’t figure out what kind of car it was 🙂
Ha – Nancy would don a frock and drive off in her bright blue roadster…
Definitely! I remember having the hardest time putting her and Bess into outfits in my young brain because the descriptions were beyond my vocabulary. And yes I had to look up coupe too.
Not sure, but wasn’t there also a jalopy?
I remember looking up “coupe”. In a dictionary. 🙂
Hahaha – right up there with “lavalier” for words we looked up as girl readers
Cherry Ames was very popular at our house.
Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys and Trixie Belden fan here
Same here. Trixie Belden was much more my style. I liked Nancy Drew (my mother handed down to me all her hard-covers from the late 40’s early 50’s), but couldn’t really identify with her.
I liked Trixie Belden too, from her I learned that a halter was an item of clothing and not just for horses lol, we lived in an Amish heavy rural area.
I never read Trixie Belden but I was hardcore about Nancy Drew. I wanted to BE her. With her titian hair (had to look that one up,) convertible, college boyfriend and a dad named Carson. Even her dad was cool!
I think my 6th grade year is defined by Nancy Drew.
(Nancy Drew, Agatha Christie, Perry Mason…small, limited library attached to a church overseas…)
Perry Mason – yes!!
I’ve never read Agatha Christie as an adult, come to think of it. Only as a teen. Didn’t know Perry Mason started out as a book series!
Loving your new avatar 🙂
Just found my bottle of Silences, it’s perfect for a cold spring day.
I was recently looking at the price for it online thinking that lower than that would be only if they start sending it free. My decant is almost empty – maybe I should buy a bottle?
You should! It smells wonderful.
Silences is SO GOOD.
+1 to this!
Memo Manoa for this cool gray day. Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes yesterday! We celebrated with champagne and chocolate.
Perfect! Is Dot a fragrance fan also?
Not really, but she does have two namesake perfumes that I have on display: CdG Dot and Marc Jacobs Dot. 🙂
Love it!
Oh, belated Happy Birthday wishes! ???? ????
Happy Easter Monday. It’s still a holiday in Poland and I’m pleased to have this one more day to rest before getting ready for my adventure.
I’m wearing La Parfumerie Moderne Belles Rives to feel classy and elegant.
Vetiver Extraordinare. Messes. Ropion and Malle, it’s been too long!
You’re smelling good. That’s another one I should pull out and wear soon.
Forgot to add my favorite childhood authors!
1. Farley Mowat: People of the Deer, The Desperate People, The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be, A Whale for the Killing, Never Cry Wolf, Sea of Slaughter, And No Birds Sang…
2. The entire Black Stallion series by Walter Farley.
3. Jack O’Brien: Silver Chief Dog of the North, The Return of Silver Chief, Silver Chief to the Rescue.
4. Albert G Miller: Fury, Stallion if Broken Wheel Ranch, Fury and the Mustangs, Fury and the White Mare.
So. Any book about a disenfranchised animal befriended by a disenfranchised kid was right up my alley!
I practically inhaled all the Black Stallion books in 6th grade.
Me, too, right around the same age. I recently watched the film, which I hadn’t seen since it came out. It was actually pretty good and reminded me why the book series was so enthralling.
Me too, the Walter Farley novels were by far my favorites. I couldn’t wait till a new one would come out each year, and a favorite great aunt would buy it for me. Black Stallion and Island Stallion… loved them.
The Farley Mowat books were family favorites when I was a kid.
Robin, I hope everything is alright!
I’m in Alain Delon’s Lyra, which I bought after rereading The Guide. Has anyone else done this, trying peripheral perfumes that LT mentioned? So far I’ve tried Lyra and Ocean Rain, with Choc on the way.
Lyra is very pretty, sunny and warm. It has a kind of raspy texture that I really enjoy, though I don’t think I need more than the single ounce I bought.
Thank you Coumarin! My mantra today is this too shall pass 🙂
Happy Monday!
1) Meanwhile in Portland the flowers are showing their stuff, but shivering as they do so!
2) Am in Prada Vetiver (from a mini dabber) because it really did seem perfect for today.
3) Who else watched JC Superstar on NBC last night? Some minor quibbles with stage business but overall an AMAZING and solid cast! The Amazing Norm Lewis as Caiaphas! Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas! The tender and brilliant Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdelene! ALICE COOPER AS HEROD!
The stage nerdery last night was REAL.
I did not see it, but wanted to. I am hoping to catch it On Demand this evening! Good to have your mini review.
If you like Weber/Rice or have seen JCS before you will like this one!
I had no idea it was being broadcast. I will check it out. Thank you.
I watched it!
It was great!
Was it ever fun! And to see Mr. Burr as Judas!
the costumes just rocked.
I loved the whole thing.
Forgot to watch it, but I saw the original film way back when.
As to 1) same in Seattle – lots of things in bloom (camellias are almost done with!) but man, was it cold this weekend!
As to 3) I recorded it and started to watch it but wasn’t into it. I was excited about it since I love John Legend. But my style of musicals is more the retro/fabulous genre that involves beautiful costuming, sets and staging, so the apocalyptic thing put me off. I had a really hard time with a recent production of Man of La Mancha. Maybe I’ll try it again…
JCS was always known for a very stripped down stage, with deceptively simple, modern-ish costumes ( Jesus himself is ALWAYS in white) and has always been a very loud, bombastic “rock’ style ( It’s a blend of modern operetta music & R&B). It’s one that people tend to either like or detest.
Musicals and even grand opera are having a time when the sets and even costuming is stripped down- it’s a reflection I think of the times.
It’s not a trend I’ve experienced with the dozen or so musicals I’ve seen in the past few years. But I’m just not a fan of the apocalyptic aesthetic. The costuming and sets for La Mancha were done in the same aesthetic. Not my thing.
Re: your #3. Yep, I watched it. I was specifically there for Alice Cooper, but was blown away by the people who voiced Judas and Caiaphas, too.
HA! Cooper did a recording of King Herod’s Song back in the day when I was in school:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6NSVrXQfvc
Theatre Nerdery alert:
Norm Lewis is a LEGEND and a demi-god of Broadway. He has done Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, Miss Saigon amongst many others. He’s….he’s amazing!
And BVD (Judas) orginated Burr in HAMILTON. *fangirl squee* *hyperventilates*
Thanks for the YouTube link! That was pretty cool!
SOTD is Balmain La Mome, which launched and went to the discounters faster than Usain Bolt can run the 100. I guess I’m the only one who liked it?
Favorite children’s books? Besides all the good ones others have mentioned, a few that come to mind: Harriet the Spy, Because of Winn Dixie, The Witch of Blackbird Pond (any of Elizabeth George Speare’s books really), and Richard Peck’s A Long Way from Chicago and A Year Down Yonder. If you haven’t read the Peck books, you have missed an absolute treat whether you’re nine or ninety.
Richard Peck is wonderful! My absolute favorite is So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane (about young wizards before it was cool to write about young wizards.) I’ll also shout out to The Boy at the End of the World by Greg van Eekhout and Nation by Terry Pratchett.
Yes, Richard Peck and also to Witch of Blackbird Pond!
My older two children read the Peck books in lit class and brought them home to share with me. They are delightful.
Grandma Dowdel = life goals 😉
I loved Richard Peck’s Secrets of the Shopping Mall. This had the same effect that Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler had on me, but rather than living in the Met, I wanted to live in the mall! 😉
I was serious about Harriet the Spy. Loved those books. I *think* this might be one of those series that I only recently came to learn has as many detractors as fans. Does anyone here hate Harriet?
Another one is Nancy Drew. I was unaware that she is loathed by many until very recently.
I’m in Parfumerie Generale’s Indochine today (thanks, petunia!) and it’s sooooo wonderful! I could bathe in this stuff. Happy Monday, all!
You smell fabulous! Indochine is just creamy, spicy goodness from start to finish.
In my top five. You smell great!
You smell great! Indochine is wonderful.
Awesome! I thought you might like it. ????
I needed something comforting after the sick feral cat ordeal this weekend. He ended up dying overnight at the home of a gentleman who kindly offered to keep him overnight and bring him to the vet today. RIP Tony ????
SOTD is Hendley Bourbon in the newer EDC concentration. Bergamot, vanilla, woods, and oakmoss. I’m not a huge vanilla fan, but I really like this one. Smells very natural, also.
So sorry! ????
Me too ????
Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear about the kitty! ❤️????
You know that pre-death look in the eyes? I’ve seen it too many times in humans and this cat had that yesterday. It’s sad, but all for the best in the end.
I know that pre-death look, too, unfortunately. Gives me the willies just thinking about it.
Poor kitty isn’t suffering any longer at least. ????
I’ve gotta try Hendley Perfumes soon. Every time you post about them, I’m reminded.
The cat looked ill, but didn’t quite act it, so I hope he didn’t suffer much his last days. He didn’t even freak out in the trap. Just kept eating calmly. Which maybe was a sign since a robust creature would have put up a fight.
Hendley: I think you’d like them. I haven’t tried Jade or Fume since they weren’t available at the time I ordered. I’m very curious about Fume. And, actually, Amora reminds me a little of Anemone come to think of it.
Bless you and your gentlemen friend for trying to help. ???? I’m sure Tony is chasing butterflies in heaven.
Thank you. I actually don’t know the guy. He was a word of mouth referral. Interesting fellow to say the least. I did meet some interesting people in this process, and I’ll just confirm: cat people are a little out there ????
We are. But the Venn diagram overlap of cat and perfume people sure are nice.
I’m not excluding myself????
But, yes, I agree.
I’m sorry.
Such is nature…
Yes, my sister has been part of a group that cares for feral cats where she lives and has done it for over 30 years including trapping and neutering and building shelters. One night about three years ago she sent me a picture of what looked like two glowing orbs in the dark.
Aha! a tiny black feral kitty she had picked up and brought home was under the bed!
Miso is now very domesticated and loved and has his indoor jungle on the screened in porch. She got him young enough.
I love a happy ending ❤ Thanks for sharing that and wonderful that your sister did that for him.
I’m so sorry Elisa. You really tried hard to help poor Tony kitty.
It was a lot of work, and the timing was bad, but the other kitties who were put off by and avoiding the sick Tony will hopefully get back to normal
I’m sorry, Elisa. We recently took in 3 tiny kittens at the shelter who were in the worst shape I’ve ever seen, just awful. They immediately went into foster care, and one died the first night. At least those poor kitties die in comfort, out of the elements and in good hands. Small comfort, I know, but still…..
Awww. That’s sad. Kittens especially. The sad thing is, it’s really hard to find a place for sick ferals to get care and shelter, here at least. All the shelters we called said no. The animal hospitals wouldn’t keep it overnight. That was probably the most disheartening part of this experience.
I don’t think he was curable-bloodwork showed multi-system issues/failure and he had a mass in his mouth and possibly his abdomen. But, yes, it snowed here today, so at least he was somewhere warm.
Oh, so sorry about little Tony. Glad he was in a home his last night, though. A good, honorable try.
Thanks LizzieB. It was also for the health and safety of the healthy cats that still live there, so there’s some relief in that.
If you’re ever in Greenpoint, you should check out the East River colonies. Some are impressive! Ours looks like a shanty town, but we’re hoping to remodel ????
I’d have to come alone. My husband would become obsessed with trying to bring them home. But some cats are fine being in the colony. ????
I am so sorry about the loss of the kitty. Bless you and all who tried to help him and make his last hours as comfortable as possible.
We tried! But hopefully the survivors around there will be better off, themselves now.
Oh no! So sorry that the sick kitty was in such bad shape. Poor little guy. ????
Even when these things are for the best, they are hard to bear. Sorry that the poor kitty didn’t make it. I hope that he didn’t suffer and the rest of the kitty colony have no lingering effects.
I am very sorry about the poor cat. So good of you both to try to help him.
I’m very sorry to hear that. Thank you so much for trying to help the poor little guy! Even though the outcome wasn’t what you wanted he probably knew you were trying to help and hopefully had some comfort along the way.
Was in Prada Oeillet yesterday (from a Nordstrom sample). Actually made no impression, so will have to try again soon. (Could be allergies).
My Dad was woken up this morning at 7:01 am by one of those scamming sweepstakes callers that plagued my mom before she passed away. I wish I’d gotten to the phone faster – although probably better I wasn’t the one to answer. (I do like to tell them they are “a thief and a liar” because it is true.)
I love children’s literature. One of my favorite classes in college was on “kiddie lit”as we called it. Surprisingly challenging. I read all the Chronicles of Prydain as a result of that class. Re-read A Wrinke in Time. Still love Holes. Will make a note of springpansy’s list for future reading.
Laughing about possible snow in NYC. I remember one time about 15 years ago I left on a business trip beginning of April and it was lightly snowing. I came back a week later and the trees had budded. Spring…she is fickle.
Sigh. My husband spent like 20 minutes on the phone with his dad last night, trying to reassure him that the person who scam-called him did not actually know of something wrong with his computer that needed fixing. I don’t know how these people live with themselves.
Oh my. I went through that with my mom over sweepstakes. They were very badgering, and I’d have to constantly talk her down from their lies. Makes me so angry.
I’ve gotten a few phishing emails lately – saying thank you for my purchase from Apple or via PayPal. They tell me to click on a link to cancel the order if it’s wrong. Scary.
I think there is a special place in hell for people who prey upon the elderly. Makes me so angry 🙁
I agree! A very special place..
Oh, Holes is fabulous.
SOTD update: I was wrong last week in thinking the Insolence sample I had was EdP. It’s the original EdT. I’m feeling great temptation to buy a very small bottle off Fragrancenet in the original bottle. Because it’s so dang cute! I like that infamous first nail polish blast.
I just bought a 30 ml bottle and it’s adorable. No regrets! Use code Aupg7 for 37% off at fragrancenet (shout out to coin-op!)
Thanks!
LizzieB, I loved A Wrinkle in Time and Holes as well. I could probably make a huge list if I thought about it longer. I’m sure some of my list is quite dated, but I love them anyway.
Does a Wrinkle in Time hold up well? I haven’t read it since I was about 10. I’m kind of on the fence about seeing the movie. Not sure why, since I liked it as a kid. But it may have been one of those that I felt compelled to like because it was so highly regarded by adults.
The book holds up. I decided to not bother seeing the movie. I re-read the book instead.
I also took a “kiddie lit” class in college. I’m blanking on what we read other than The Secret Garden and Judy Blume’s Iggy’s House.
And those scammers ???? Although I’ve been scammed by legit tech aids fairly recently. I couldn’t get my printer to connect so I called the helpline and was under warranty, the guy did a remote check of my software etc and wanted to sell me $500 worth of services including more software telling me there was suspicioussoftware installed etc. Fortunately I had enough sense to tell them I need to check with my spouse on this. Turns out, it had nothing to do with my printer or computer. It was my Spectrum wifi which was having issues and that got resolved and so did my printer issue! So, now it’s also “take advantage of people who aren’t tech savvy, too”. Terrible. I called them back to let them know. It should be a felony. Or it is, but no one’s catching these people.
I’ve never gotten a sweepstakes or tech scam call but I got an odd one recently. It was a voicemail telling me I had some kind of legal issue with penalties that I needed to get cleared up stat until things got worse. My cousin’s name was dropped in the course of the call – a cousin I haven’t seen for 30 years but shares my last name, which was perplexing but surely intended to make me think the call was legit.
The caller didn’t leave a name, or the name of the organization, but wanted me to call a 1-800 number to get my “problem” resolved. That, frankly, was the tip-off.
I’ve gotten similar calls telling me to call a 1-800 number to talk to my doctor about medical issues. Uh, no. My doctors have direct, local phone numbers. And their nurses identify themselves when they call me.
Thanks for all the book recommendations. I love children’s literature. I agree, it is comforting in many ways.
Wearing Idylwild. Trying it out again. I like it a bit better every time I wear it.
Thanks to LisaInDenver for the sample!
Great choice. ????????
Wearing Arielle Shoshana edp, thanks to Mals and the Swapmeet! Its cheerfulness is especially welcome on a gray cool Monday.
🙂
Running a little late for work after taking the kids for their annual check ups. As far as children’s books, I loved Judy Blume, and SE Hinton books. Not really for little children, I know. I also really liked Pippy Long stocking. I’m wearing Alien today, it’s cold today, expecting rain and snow starting tonight.
Yes! Judy Blume – loved reading those also.
Pippi Longstocking was awesome. A horse in the house?! YES
Ditto this! I loved Pippi and the TV series when I was a kid.
TV series??? Wha??
Or maybe it was a movie on TV? Whatever got aired on TV, I loooved(maybe late 70s).
I loved SE Hinton, too! Read the whole series and for some reason was surprised when I found out she was female. I have no idea why, but I must have had some unacknowledged gender bias as a kid or something!
Oh, same here — it was a huge surprise.
Like springpansy said, we have sun in Seattle today that will be followed by quite a few days of rain. So I’m making the most of the nice weather in spring favorite Ostara.
Hope everyone has a good Monday!
We had hail! Lots of it. And very cold temps. Enjoy your Ostara.
Hail!! That is just not right.
Yes, hail in Seattle last night around 7pm preceded by one huge occurrence of thunder and lightning. It hailed hard for 3-5 min before turning to rain.
No electrical storms up here but it was windy as all get-out last night. And did I mention cold?
Trying Mancera Velvet Vanilla and Coco Vanille today.
Not a fan of either but still loving the Vanilla Quest ‘18 journey.
She-ra the Vanilla queen…
Good to know, was just looking up coco vanille last night.
I love the Coco Vanille (I gave her the samples), but you have to like the Mancera base. Velvet Vanilla has a fair amount of tuberose/florals in it which wasn’t my thing. If you really like the house they’re worth a try. Love their choco Violette!
Ooh… now I will be looking at the velvet vanilla!
Robin, I hope everything is ok! Be well!
I have doused myself in VCA Bois d’Iris from the swapmeet! I mean, DOUSED. Like, eight sprays or so. I’ve been really getting into iris lately. I feel like it’s a hard note to OD on, right? This scent is exactly as advertised: creamy, woody iris.
What are your favorite irises? Any other nice heavy, creamy irises? I love Iris Ukiyoe, but I’m looking for something less sheer right now.
My absolute favorite iris, although I wouldn’t call it creamy exactly, is L’Attesa. It’s rich and bubbly. I also love Iris Cendre, which requires a tolerance for smoke. So many more, but I’ll stop!
I will have to try that one out! (I also looked up the definition of “l’attesa,” and it translates to “the wait.” That makes me want to try it even more. What a great name!)
I actually have a sample of Iris Cendre I’ve been trying out lately! I do like it, but I don’t think it’s one of my favorites. I love smoke, but IC seems more…stale embers? ash? than smoke to me. I need to test it more.
I’d love even more recs; no need to restrain yourself!
+1 L’Attesa! I sampled Le Cri today and it reminds me of face cream, thus giving me a creamy impression.
Haha, hmm, enough people love le Cri that I will certainly have to give that one a try!
I love it but it’s more the light of ambrette and rose to me than iris, although the iris is definitely there.
TDC Bois d’Iris!
I get so confused when perfumes have the same names. But hey, if I love VCA Bois d’Iris, maybe I’ll love TDC’s take on the same name!
Indeed! TDC is less sweet than VCA but a good iris for cooler weather (rich and creamy.)
Thank you Koyel! I am hanging in there.
Yes I hope everything stays manageable Robin!
Ditto, recognizing that this is not the most thoughtful manner of expressing such.
Thank you Amy!
I find Bois d’Argent to be similar in character to VC&A Bois d’Iris.
Got back from LA sun to Boston snow early this morning and not about it! I like winter just fine, but it’s time to be over now.
But my full bottle of Niral was here and sprayed it is glorious. The Rose comes out more alongside the iris. I don’t get a strong tea note. It’s really beautiful to me and different from the other NVCs.
A new spring favorite. Also wore a lot of Dilittante this weekend, which a friend said smelled like happiness – and La Fille de Berlin. Ditto!
Not happy!
“Not about it” made perfect sense to me regarding your weather! ❄
Haha! To me too. I’m not about this weather either.
Whoaaa you got that bottle quickly. Was that a blind buy? So tempting to just get a bottle. Rose and iris and Duchafour and NVC are some of my favorite things.
I’d sampled and really liked but it is even better sprayed!
I’m wearing Infusion d’Iris Absolue today. I have a decant in a rollerball and it’s evaporating at an alarming rate. I have the regular Infusion edt but I like the Absolue so much more. It’s warmer, rounder, and not so green as the edt.
Email me through my gravatar if you want some more! I have more than I will ever get through 😉
Thanks so much for offering! I still have about 20mls left. Maybe when I get closer to the end?
Re: Kid’s books–does anyone remember Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle? I love them and still read them when I need a laugh.
Yes! Loved them. I introduced my H & his son to them and they were well-received.
I am wearing Jo Malone Green Wheat & Meadowsweet . I have really enjoyed wearing this scent, ever since receiving a small sample of it from Saks last month. I purchased a full bottle this past Saturday, wore it yesterday on Easter Sunday, and picked it again to wear this morning. I am also drinking a cup of Harney & Sons Paris tea.
Late checking in today… had some errands this morning. Wearing Chanel No. 19 edp and smelling wonderful – the edp is so much friendlier than the Invisible Armor of vintage edt (not that I’d give that version up, I just needed friendlier today).
My list of beloved children’s books, from either my childhood or my children’s is long, LONNNNG, and contains too many great books to enumerate it. I will, however, mention Ruth Gannett’s wonderful “My Father’s Dragon.”
Add that book to the list!
Funny – I find No 19 in edt softer and easier to wear than the edp, and also more versatile.
Well, I don’t have current edt (which I find relatively bland) and my vintage is a little bitey. Excellent for spray-on backbone, but I tend to reserve it for that.
I have (well, actually had, since I just swapped it) a vintage bottle as well (from the 70s.) My edp is current, though.
I’m uncharacteristically in the EDT today, definitely no match for the EDP, but still nice, nonetheless.
When I stepped out of the shower I realized I had no idea what this week’s theme was and thought “Let’s see how close I get!” I chose Iris Rebelle – def not one of my top ten for spring but I do like it. Still struggling with the amount of carrot at the opening, if I’m being honest.
Forgot my book recs – my 4 year old loves Esther Averill’s Cat Club books; I’m trying to snap them all up while they’re still back in print!
Loving this thread today with all the book recommendations! My favorites as a kid consisted mostly of junk like Sweet Valley Twins/High and I’m feeling like my exposure to good literature as a kid was seriously lacking. I did love Anne of Green Gables, C.S. Lewis and everything by L’Engle. We read “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown to our littles and are now in the middle of “The Wild Robot Escapes”. My husband mostly does the evening reading and even he gets excited to see what happens next.
Finished off sample of Le Cri today. I really like it. Probably not FB worthy, but it’s lovely.
I’m in Iris Nazarena today, from a decant that also serves as a travel spray. This is good, as I’ll be taking it with me when I run off to see my sister on the other side of town tomorrow.
We’ll have a belated birthday slumber party: home facials, nails, popcorn and movies! ???? ???? ???? ????
You smell wonderful. Enjoy the slumber party!
Thanks, lillyjo!
I need to eat more popcorn.
Have fun!
So do we all. Thanks for the reminder, I’m packing the Orville R. right now.
Ooooh, enjoy your belated slumber party! That sounds awesome.
Thanks, Jalapeno!
Sounds like fun and you smell fab!
Thanks, I’m looking forward to a little mini vacation. ????
I forgot about book recs. My favorites were Little Women and Little Men, by Louisa May Alcott. Little Men was very special to me, since it was my grandmothers copy.
I reread these books many, many times, to the point where my parents were perplexed! ????
I have a tiny bit of Yves Rocher Neroli left on my shirt from yesterday. I wore it yesterday because the weather was very springlike. Today it snowed and the freshness of YR Neroli compliments the fresh bracing smell of the snow perfectly.
Maybe a Friday cp could be perfume surprises like a Summer scent unexpectedly behaving beautifully in cold weather and vice versa
I have quite a few of those, especially in the white flower dept.
SOTD is Areej le Dore Ottoman Empire. Wow is this stuff skanky. I have a small sample and applied several drops here and there before I realised that I was fast becoming quite stinky. And skanky. Wow, indolic jasmine, rich rose, oak moss, a very beautiful not sort of sour oud, and more oak moss. It smells like your dog just rolled around in the remains of really smelly animal. (I had a German-shepherd lab mix who used to do that.) And yet it’s nice. It’s beautiful. Not for the faint of heart! (Did I mention skanky?)
Love that skanky stuff! Vintage Bal EdC punches that clock for me.
SOTD – Nabucco Amartys. Very beautiful but very low projection 🙁
Hello, and best of good mornings from this last day of the Easter break. I’ve squandered it completely: with perfect aplomb and no guilt at all, I’ve done absolutely nothing, and it’s been wonderful. Most afternoons I’ve even taken a nap, and I’ve still managed pretty good sleep at night. I feel quite different and strangely reluctant to go back to work tomorrow.
My SOTD is Black Cashmere, and all those sweet woods and iris and jasmine and mandarin notes are winding their magic around me. It’s probably still too hot to enjoy BC properly, but I don’t care: it’s beautiful in all weathers, just a bit livelier in summer and lovelier in winter. Gorgeous! Eric seems to enjoy it— he’s snuggled hard against me and licking my arm rather too hard for comfort. Goodness, but his tongue is raspy! The two Stripies came by for morning inspection, sniffed, and departed rapidly, with their tails elevated in identical and perfect question marks. When I see them do that, I often wish I had a tail too that I could use to show that I’m feeling quizzical. How useful it would be!
Well, on that note, I should probably go and start my day. Be very well and happy, all.
Sounds like you spotted the “Happy Cat Tail” on the Stripies! Even single cat I have spent a lot of time with has its own special way of holding its tail in a curve when he/she is happy. From the tiniest curl at the very tip to a full-out corkscrew, it is as individual as our fingerprints. ????
Now that’s interesting. I’ve often observed the tail behaviour, but I’ve never before noticed that it has signature style to it. I’ll keep watching.
Oh yes, cats’ tails are very expressive.
But I agree with waterdragon’s theory – question mark-shaped tails mean confused, uncertain, undecided, quizzical etc. Happy tails are different.
I had to explain to a friend once that a twitching, quick moving tail on a cat is NOT the same as a dog wagging its tail….
I re-read Phantom Tollbooth a few years ago and it was so much better as an adult than as a kid. The math concepts are so cleverly done, but a bit over the heads of most children, I think.
Other childhood favorites: Homer Price by Robert McCloskey, Fifteen by Beverly Cleary (as well as her other books but 15 was a particular favorite,) Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster. My aunt had a set of the Bobbsey Twins series, which I revered. Even as a kid I had a penchant for entertainments meant for an older generation than my own.
I also loved The Egypt Game and others by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. They had great cover art, which is what drew me to them. I was a voracious reader as a kid and my first job was in the Children’s Dept of my local library. It was a great first job and quite possibly the best job I’ve ever had, honestly.
Wearing Sylvanie Delacourte Florentina today. It is charming and couldn’t be more spring-y.
The Egypt Game is so good! (I liked the Bobbsey Twins as well, and Phantom Tollboth, but Egypt Game discovered me when I was the right age for it.)
I can’t remember if The Egypt Game was part of a series or not. I think so, right? I read all of the ZKP books available at my library and they’ve blurred together.
Also loved The Westing Game and Ellen Raskin’s other books.
Nobody has mentioned yet two of my favorites as a child: Black Beauty and Charlotte’s Web. Oh, how I cried and cried, at both of them. Why must children’s books (and movies) always carry such hard lessons about death?
I was going to mention Charlotte’s Web but figured someone else already had. I’ll admit that unless a spider is huge, black and scary, I let them be because I feel bad for their children.
I also loved A Cricket in Times Square, Stuart Little, and other books illustrated by Garth Williams. I hope newer versions have kept the illustrations, but they probably haven’t.
I ask spiders to leave, lol, I say I’m going over here please leave by time i get back.
I cried and cried too. And the Giving tree.
No snow here this morning, just an icky mix of precipitation that thankfully turned into all rain around 9 or so this morning. Bletch!
Favorite books as a kid: The Dr. Seuss books, which gave me a love of puns and wordplay that I have to this day; Beverly Cleary’s “Ramona and Beezus” series; “Heidi”; “Pippi Longstocking”; “The Hobbit” and the Lord of the Rings series, Piers Anthony’s “Xanth” books, and Robert Asprin’s “MythAdventures” series.
SOTD = Imaginary Authors Violet Disguise, from the sample stash and a generous NSTer. Ha! I didn’t even realize that I had matched my perfume to the book theme today! Violet Disguise strongly reminds me of Guerlain Insolence, so if you like that you might want to try the Imaginary Authors.
Oh, I forgot about Henry and Ribsy, who were neighbors to Ramona and Beezus! Ribsy and Henry drew me and and then I read all the spinoffs! Plus, my real name is Ramona, so no chance of anyone ever forgetting to remind me…!
Xanth! I loved that series. I never knew anyone except my sister and I who read them.
Totally off-topic but also adding this rant/PSA, as I’m sure I’m not the only Lord & Taylor/Saks/Saks Off 5th/Gilt shopper here:
Why did I have to learn about a security breach on the news instead of from these companies where I frequently shop? I have gotten about 20 emails from the above stores since Friday and NONE mention that my credit card number (which they automatically save to their websites) may have been stolen and sold on the dark web?
Obviously it’s too late now, but I went back and changed all of my passwords and deleted my CC #s, but really – even MyFitnessPal sent out security breach warnings and it’s not even a shopping site.
Ugh, yeah. I’ve heard a bit more on specifics of the breach on my local news. Looks like it was in-store purchases that were affected, and the heaviest hit areas were in NY and NJ. It did NOT compromise the on line sales.
Ugh, what a pain! Scary too. At least you caught it quickly.
Ha! Sad but true! The glory of technology, which is supposed to make everything more efficient, but really makes so many things convoluted and labyrinthine. I’m not anti-tech, but someone needs to create sensible technology that speaks human.
SOTD: Box of Eels EdP for back to work today followed by a french class tonight.
I had about 30 of the Trixie Belden books and loved them. Lots of my other favourites mentioned here too. Some I haven’t heard mentioned which I loved were Susan Cooper’s the Dark is Rising series and Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea trilogy.
Oh my! Tricia Belden. My sister had those.
Dang autocorrect….
I had a craving for Mohur this morning but couldn’t find my decant. Then I thought that I’d wear Fetes Persanes but accidentally grabbed Vepres Siciliennes. I’ve had this decant hanging around for a few years cause it’s not a favorite. All that to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I like the dry down much more than the opening.
I switched my fall/winter perfumes out for spring/summer frags over the weekend. My theory is that it caused the 4+ inches of wet snow we had this morning. Sort of like washing your car and then it rains.
I don’t remember all of my favorite childhood books but remember loving Charlotte’s Web and The Secret Garden.
Changing out your Winter coats and jackets for lighter Spring ones will do the same thing with the weather, I think.
It does seem that way.
The Secret Garden!! I loved that one, as well. I think that book sparked my lifelong desire to have a really lush, overgrown backyard… something I will likely never achieve as long as I live in the desert. phooey.
????
Maybe it would have been a nice day for a baby or children’s scent, like Bvlgari Petits et Mamans or something like that.
Two children’s book recommendations:
Stonewords-A Ghost Story. Well written and genuinely haunting, at least for older elementary and early middle school kids.
Frida (by Jonah Winter- there have been several childrens books about her)- cute, and lightly touches on the value of suffering.
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDT
That’s right, the EDT, not my usual EDP. I thought I would change things up for “spring” which today meant heavy wet snow this morning that pretty much melted away by the afternoon. I applied 7 sprays and it was virtually gone in about 5 hours, then briefly reappeared around hour 10. I do like it but it will not supplant my darling EDP!
My favorite children’s books —
– Bobbsey Twins
– Nancy Drew, which I started reading as soon as my sister was able to check out books from the school library, I was in 2nd grade
– Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators.
