Tuesday scent of the day 3/27

Posted by Robin on 27 March 2018 305 Comments

Tuesday, and World Theater Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

It's still not quite spring here, but I'm trying to hurry it along with L’Artisan Jacinthe des Bois, from perfumer Anne Flipo. Tea at the moment is Organic English Breakfast from Upton.

Reminder: on 3/30, to honor Women's History Month, wear a fragrance by perfumer Germaine Cellier or Josephine Catapano, if you have one. If you don't, wear a fragrance by any female perfumer.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Cardew Design Crosswords Teapot is around $18 at Amazon.

Romantina, my go to calm, sweet, nice scent today. Needed something NICE. Weekend ended with a threat of a shooting at one of our schools, (non threat, just a crazy vagrant they say and the store dd not sell to him) but parents all over the district in an uproar. Just as we start school Monday and are reassuring parents we have protocols we practice… a gas leak and we have to evaluate to the far side of the playground. What a day! Kids did great, guy was caught late Monday, again non credible threat … Facebook and panic ridden parents is a 21st century evolution. I wish I could float away in a cloud of rose ikebana or some such peaceful scent…

I had a similar situation at work yesterday morning with a 3 hour lockdown. The culprit turned out to be a 12 year old. Scary out there.

Speaking of calm, sweet, nice scents my SOTD is Sarah Horowitz’s Perfect Veil oil. I have a tiny sample, and I would be interested in more, but herbsite doesn’t give any quantities that I can see for any of her products. I find that so annoyingly pretentious that I may withhold in turn my $$.

huh, I have not been to her website, but I have seen her perfume on Lucky Scent and on QVC, they were selling an ounce of perfect veil with a roller ball of a layering scent for $40. This one is on my list, but so are so many other scents :)

Ohh, shellyw, I’m so sorry for you and all of the kids and parents. I marched this weekend in the small city in live in just north of Seattle. There have been multiple massacres in this area and a teen boy was arrested for a (very seriously credible; automatic weapons purchased and all) planned school shooting the day before Parkland. I was happy to be at the march to support the kids in this area who’ve already suffered and face daily anxiety about what might happen next. I grieve for our entire nation and am committed to doing what I can to help.

Sending you massive virtual hugs. The school that I work at had two similar incidents in the two days immediately after the Parkland shooting, and I know the terrible anxiety involved. Make sure you take care of yourself – I know that the stress involved in having to be “the grown up” in that situation is really acute.

Rose Ikebana is absolutely lovely therapy, by the way.

Scent twins! And from the same source in the splitmeet.

I am really enjoying this scent, much more than I expected to. It is perfect for spring, in that it smells like fun and exuberance. It also manages to smell BOTH purple AND yellow AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! How did the perfumer do that?

My perfume grinch partner sniffed this, then sniffed again and again! He pronounced it more interesting than what I usually wear, and said it smelled like candy. There is definitely a sweet fruit aspect to it that could be considered candy-like.

Two thumbs up. It is quite long lasting (and fairly strong). Bonus that the nose behind this is a woman!

I can’t see the name because it’s so small lol, but it is dark burgandy. It goes on lighter than it looks. It’s on the drugstore side, but they still had testers. It’s like 3 dollars.

A few weeks ago, I tried the current version at Macy’s. I really liked it, and asked about the price. Two SA told me that they didn’t sell it anymore. I said, then why is the tester still on the counter? They both blamed a phantom SA for not putting it away, and then they still left it on the counter. Then I checked the website, and it said that yes, this store does carry it. I think they just didn’t want to open up any drawers. Lol

Well isn’t that a bummer! I adore many of the older Shiseido scents, Inoui, Feminite du Bois, Zen and Murasaki are favorites.

I toyed with the idea of buying some of that in my early rabbit-hole days (which consisted mostly of buying bottles I wanted or had when I was a teenager.) My friends’ very Zen hippy aunt, who studied meditation in San Francisco (which seemed very exotic at the time,) had a bottle in her little seaside cottage.

I never quite wrapped my head around what it smells like. It’s often referred to as a rose, but IIRC the reviews I read were kind of conflicting. Thoughts?

The newer version is sweet spicy/floral, but the older version is a beautiful powdery rose, without aldehydes and a slight incense and woods dry down. Wears close to the skin but with nice staying power.

I was going to go for one of the 3 Lynn Harris compositions in my Cire Trudon coffret , but Bruma was calling me(Antoine Li). Sorry, Lynn. Later this week…
I also spritzed a little AC Iris Rebelle on my hand for comparison. Definitely some similarities. The AC is drier and less sweet. Bruma is more feminine. But I’m liking the AC more each time I try it.

Wearing Tom Ford Sahara Noir. I think I was fortunate to have chosen it this morning to give me some peace and patience. As soon as I entered the office, not even reaching my desk yet, still with my coat on and my bag on my shoulder, one of my coworkers approached me to tell me that whatever I have done in one of our projects was totally wrong! Managenent wanted her to fix “my mess”. Excuse me! Did you ever find out from me the location of the latest files???? What you have in your hands is the original design and after a meeting with “management” last week we coordinated the changes with the lead engineer. Now, it seems that everybody forgot that the latest design that I work on for 2 weeks was reviewed and approved by them last Thursday!!!. They all forgot???? Sorry about my rant, but incompetence is one of the things that I cannot handle well.
I will drink now the spearmint-lavender tea from the swapmeet (thanks NancyLeandros) with my late breakfast. At least I am smelling great! ????.

The crazy thing is that the he original design by the architect did not work with the engineer’s for many weeks. They had many problems with it and I was not involved in it. After coordination meetings they finally agreed on a final design and I was the one fixing and expediting things to meet a deadline. But what I still do not understand is how they decided last night that the old files where the final ones after they had in their hands the final results of my work last week. Things here are most of the time like that… senseless.

My H is a land surveyor who mostly works on big civil projects and runs into that all the time. I am a former land surveyor (worked mostly in land use) and used to run into that all the time, too. Before I made any such accusations, you can bet I did a thorough search of all the files – both digital and hard copy. That’s just sloppy, and frankly, lazy. And leads to expensive mistakes.

I also constantly ran into issues with different people working on different versions because they were so randomly stored on our servers. I made it my mission at my last job to make sure the survey dept digital and hard-copy files were organized in a such way that there was no question about which iteration was current. That s*** drove me absolutely crazy. I also deleted a lot of stuff that was unnecessarily hanging around and would only serve to confuse people. Our server was littered with garbage like that. grrrrr

Anyway, I hear you! Hope things go more smoothly from here on out!

Digitals files there sometimes are very messy depending on the project and people working on it. In this particular case was not so terrible. However, what it infuriated me was that they all had hard copies that were reviewed and approved. When they were looking for the final documents and drawings late on Friday they never paid attention to the dated submission folder where they were all located. They looked for them in the working/progress folder, where the previous documents are stored. I just wonder how after their review and approval they came to the conclusion that I have never worked on anything. What the approval of final design was based on then? Since managament changed more than a year ago, everything has been a disaster. We go from one aggravation to another.
I hope the day is better tomorrow.

However we still run across our fare share of frustrating situations, trust me!! In an effort to fix things occasionally we will have to send back a “stinger” email to get our point across (even though they may not necessarily feel the burn due to carefully chosen words).

I hope you got your “stinger” points across! And sorry you had such a crappy day. Deep breaths????

As you said we have to be very careful with the words chosen. Despite, I control myself all the time, they could see the anger in my face today. For them was also embarrassing because they could not justify the approval of something that was ready to be submitted, but that “suddenly” disappear and it was messed up again? And all the situation because they did not find the location of the files, that were so visible for everyone. So frustrating!

I’m working my way through some 4160 Tuesdays samples in preparation for a skype conversation with founder and perfumer Sarah McCartney at Arielle Shoshana on Saturday. Yay, Women’s Month!

Last night I stopped by The Black Narcissus blog and read this review of fragrances from the expensive but possibly worth it English brand Henry Jacques (and of course I’m now obsessed with the impossibility of sniffing them):

    https://theblacknarcissus.com/2018/03/26/swoon-the-best-lavender-i-have-ever-smelled-and-the-most-gorgeously-ecstatic-tuberose-vert-galant-dentelle-dans-la-coeur-by-henry-jacques/

    Has anyone tried these?

Kanuka, unfortunately, I am spending too much time on the internet, some drawn-out tasks, and training to have completed any book recently, but I have started the second book in the astonishing Chinese science fiction trilogy by Liu Cixin that began with Three Body. Definitely worth reading if you have any tolerance for speculative fiction.

Added to my list is The Square and the Tower by historian Niall Ferguson, as a result of attending a talk he gave here. Caveat: he is involved in some political controversies, particularly regarding his wife. Nonetheless, I find much of interest in his thesis that historians have tended to focus on formal hierarchies (partly because their research depends heavily on archives maintained by governments) and have missed the role of informal but influential networks. He compares the 17 and 18th centuries with our own, particularly the impact of the printing press with the rise of the internet and social media. One focus is the clash between official state religions and the new denominations that sprung up when the Bible was translated and printed, the Reformation and Counterreformation, and comparing that era with the rise of Populism, through social media, in our own time.

When I don’t stop by NST, I often wonder how you and waterdragon are doing in the opposite season and time of day.

I’ve never really been too interested in speculative fiction so it’s time I changed. I just read this review from the London Review of Books
          https://www.lrb.co.uk/v40/n03/nick-richardson/even-what-doesnt-happen-is-epic

I like the sound of the Niall Ferguson too.
I’ve been trying to find information about Maori who were converted to mormonism in NZ in the 1800s and then went off for years at a time to the Salt Lake Temple…just seems like such a strange story. It’s just one of those research digressions that slipped up on me. All well here! I’m hoping to visit with Waterdragon in June.

The Ginger Musk is barely detectable which is not what I was expecting from a MOntale…the Soleil is a lovely citrus so it reads pleasant and not overpowering…and the Sublime is only detectable to me when I press my nose against my hand…I just really wanted to test it and did not want to wait until later :)

    SotD = Eau des Merveilles

EdM, my old friend, I’ve missed you. It’s funny to think how noses are so different, yet we all can find “the one” that fits perfectly. (Or more than “one,” who am I kidding, right?) Yesterday was supposed to be for EdM, but my hand reached for the “sad iris” instead.

Lovely Hiris was comforting and very fitting as my family spent yesterday celebrating the life of my late grandad. He had 4,862 Tuesdays, and spent many of them doing exactly what he wanted to do, right up to the very last.

    Love you, Grandad!

    2. The Body Shop is having another 40% sale, and has a freebie everyday this week with online purchases. (Don’t know about in-store). I had some rewards to spend, so I have a little Body Shop fragrance haul on the way…. (Donatella would love it…) :)

    Happy Tuesday!

    1) And back to the gray weather we all know and love in Portland! BUT! The cherry blossoms and plum blossoms are out, the magnolias are starting to bloom and the spring bulbs are showing!

    2) Am in Prada Iris Cedre (from the mini dabber set)- perfect for today.

    3) Coffee with homemade almond milk and a sweet roll with raisins from the Vietnamese/French bake shop. Not quite Hot Cross Buns, but pretty darn good!

I’m wearing the sadly discontinued Parfums de Nicolai Mimosaique. I unearthed my decant last week when going through my collection for possible swap items and found that it has evaporated from 20ml to about 10ml. So sad. Decants evaporating are killing me lately.

I’ve got a super busy day at work as I have two different project deadlines that both go live tomorrow. Focus time!

It’s the perfume version of Russian roulette. I’ve had all sorts of containers evaporate, and the same exact type and source last forever.

I need to parafilm all of my more valuable ones, but then that deprives me of the pleasure of randomly sniffing the stoppers to enjoy without having to actually wear them (never enough time or skin, and some are more interesting to just sniff than to wear).

Yes, I should go through and methodically parafilm anything that doesn’t have it already.

And it’s the same thing for me – the same decant bottle type behaves differently. Weird.

I hear you on the parafilm conflict. It can be frustratingly hard to peel off, too. I like plumber’s tape (the teflon type) since it’s easy to remove, but can also be wrapped back on – but I’m not sure it’s as effective against evaporation?

OOH! I liked that one too! Along with Gold Leather and Red Leather (which smells like a smoky version of Giorgio’s Red)…have you tried Violet Chocolatiere or Cafe Diem yet? I think those two are my favorite. Starry Starry Night was a bit too smoky and dry for my taste.

I did try the Violet Chocolatiere last night – at first, it was a little too much Tootsie Roll, but it did subside into something a little more wearable after an hour or so. I was hoping that Cafe Diem would be a huge blast (and a lingering one) of coffee, but it turned out to be quite floral on my skin. Weird, since there aren’t really floral notes listed for it. I am forever in search of a really great coffee perfume!

Ha! it was that Tootsie Roll vibe which made me love it!!! My sweet tooth was happy! And yes, Cafe Diem definitely smells floral to me too…and also, not a creamy coffee but more of a dark dry roast…
I really enjoyed the three leathers as well… folks that gravitate towards leather notes might want to get their noses on them.

2 hours in, the sweetness has gone down a little – now it’s more sweet lily than sweet applesauce – but it’s still sweeter than the extrait. I’m so happy to have decants to play with instead of committing to a fb right away.

I have to take the old dunger ( car ) to the mechanic this morning which means a long walk home . I quite like the walk as it starts off in an industrial/ warehouse part of town where I get glimpses of mecahnics working on fire engines , spray painters, toxic waste depots, hospital laundry services with long racks of laundry bags…then past the stadium where Ed Sheeran is playing tonight ( but not for me ) through the university following a river (Leith ) with lots of swallows, then into the botanic gardens and the remains of the roses, up through the cedars of Lebanon, the south asian garden and into the NZ natives…then across the rugby fields half way up the hill, up, up, up past the play centre and school and SPCA …along our street which is closed while they replace the pavement…and home. About 8km of unfolding events and daydreaming. Wearing Interlude

    That teapot! I want it!

In MH la Fumee today! Done by a female perfumer (I think? Lyn Harris?), and also because of a conversation I had about this scent yesterday with NSTers. I have been thinking about getting this one for a while, and wanted to try out my sample before pulling the trigger. In the first couple minutes, the scent was quite meh, and I started to think I’d be saving a bunch of money, but once it warmed up, I remembered why I loved it so much. Yum yum YUM. Anyone up for a split of this? I think you can snag a 100 mL bottle for ~$75 on Fragrancenet, so 10 mL decants would end up being something like $12.

If I’m not very much mistaken, it would cost at least $25 to mail you the decant, which I think would very much not be worth it o.o Also, it would take me forever to get it to you because I have to go to the post office when it is staffed (which is much harder to do than going after-hours to the unmanned kiosk)!

I hadn’t thought to look into CAD shipping using paypal until now. Looks like it can be done for under $10. This is assuming a weight of 6 oz. (a 10 ml decant in a padded envelope weighs 2-4 oz.)

Here’s a trick, I’m pretty sure that happens, if you leave it in your cart, and don’t buy it, after a little bit of time they send out a 35 or 37 percent coupon deal with a set time limit. That’s been my experience, but I constantly leave things in the cart, without purchasing.

I’m in Galop from the swapmeet. I’ve never worn such a noticeably leathery scent before, but I could get used to this! It feels powerful and beautiful. I might need that in the coming days; my formerly innocent baby boy has learned the word “no”. I have a feeling our lives will never be the same again :-)

Twins! (from the splitmeet) I find it’s a feminine leather, very refined. I’m loving the animalic dry down. Great for this chilly day. You smell great, NW. Thanks Koyel!

Not participating yet again. Am in Heure Exquise. I meant to grab one of the ones I set out for the week by a female perfumer, but saw the Heure Exquise and the rest is history lol.

Bought a ticket today to fly to Alabama next weekend and see my son. He’s going to prom and I just have to see him in his tux in person. Well, and help him get ready like I always do…if I’m not there, who will straighten his bow tie for him?! ;) He technically graduated HS in December- he received early graduation because he already had all of his credits so he could go ahead and start college etc- but he still gets to go to prom and walk across the stage in May etc. I can’t wait to see him and his girlfriend all dressed up.

Even though I have a boy, I still treasure those 20 minutes it takes him to get ready (as opposed the two hours I’m sure it will take his girl lol) and the pictures I take ha!

Awwww, congrats! It’s maybe not quite so exciting to be the mother of a boy going to prom as it is to have a daughter going (in my experience, anyway, especially because getting a son to agree to having pictures made is like pulling teeth), but it’s still awesome to see your little baby all dressed up and grown up…

Exactly. I think he’s finally resigned the the picture thing. He fought it and fought it for years until he realized he’s not going to win that battle!

I’m in Heure Exquise as well, the EDT. Busy day with no breaks this afternoon so I took 5 minutes to zone out; that’s the fragrance that came to mind.

I crawled out of my down comforter and went over to my friends house where there was a package waiting from Koyel from the split meet. In addition to the Galop which was lovely, there were some sample goodies. My friend’s 16 year old nephew really liked the Cuir Mauresque (kid has good taste) and my friend liked the floral based samples so it was the gift that kept on giving. Many thanks Robin for hosting the splitmeet and Koyel for your generosity.

    PS That teapot is adorable!

Since the person who doesn’t like this perfume isn’t in the office today, I’m wearing Mona di Orio Vanille. Love it!

Late PSA: Anthropologie has a couple of bottles left of Berdoues Vanira Moorea, Assam of India and Somei Yoshino at about $45 (price in shopping cart, 25% applied automatically). It might be free S&H but I’m not 100% sure from the description of the promotion if there’s a minimum purchase to qualify. Yay for being able to wear one of your favorites! And boo hiss on the enabling. I didn’t bite because I just spent $$$s on Rising Phoenix attars and oils and I am allergic to buying the smallest size. Clarissa is a bad influence, just sayin’.

Clouds have rolled in today; so much for the sun. ⛅ At least it isn’t raining… yet. Pretty sure that is in the forecast for the week. I just noticed that one of my neighbor’s has a forsythia hedge loaded down with fat yellow buds. Might be seeing that in bloom just in time for Easter! ???? ????

Back in a Liz Zorn (aka Soivohle) scent today. SOTD = My Heart Sings A Memory, from the sample stash and a generous NSTer. I pulled it out before I saw the weather outside, but it kind of matches. A cool instance of serendipity.

SOTD = Annick Goutal Heure Exquise EDP

I am doing women perfumer / entrepreneur / fragrance director week. This hits on perfumer (Isabelle Doyenne) and entrepreneur (Annuck Goutal).

I overslept by an hour this morning but still made it to work before 8! Had I not thought of which perfume to wear in advance that would fit the theme, I would have selected No. 19 EDP which Heure Exquise resembles!

Way late today, but I am on my third scent application already. Started in Alien Musc Mysterieux, after bike ride put on Enlevement au Serail, and now I have the entire Comptoir Sud Pacifique on my arms. :-) I think I will go for a grand slam with Cuir Beluga at bedtime.
