Thursday scent of the day 3/22

Posted by Robin on 22 March 2018 271 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with 4160Tuesdays Urura's Tokyo Cafe to match Pantone Pink Lavender, but it's not really a perfect fit.

Reminder: on 3/23, to celebrate the equinox, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's colors from the Spring 2018 report for New York.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Fresh sprigs of mint leaves with white tea brewing..Tracy Chapman playing (by request of my 2 little ones)

    Spring state of mind.

      Thanks all..
Not sure if anyone is into soaps but over at the nonprofit Karam (no affiliation) they are having 20% off with code WOMEN2018. I have never tried their soaps but often stalk their website looking at all the beautiful things. The website was on a thread over at BdJ blog when she was writing about Syria. Finally pulled the trigger. Between this website and ebay I am officially done shopping (for the month of March)

Sounds like a fragrant and beautiful morning! And to answer your question from yesterday, I’d been ordering matcha lattes at the coffee shop, but have bought some matcha to start making at home. I think I’m addicted. :D

            Don’t use boiling water
You can strain the tea before mixing (so you don’t get clumps)

Here is a link to Ippodo (my favorite place to get a matcha) https://www.facebook.com/IPPODOTEA.NY

They have great videos on their facebook page

Argh, I was in such a hurry and focused on other things (I had to give short presentation this morning about The EU General Data Protection Regulation), I forgot to apply a perfume.

But I can still smell the drydown of Amouage Gold (Man). Wow, it just lasts and lasts (I applied it yesterday around 9PM, its now 3 PM next day and I can still smell it without much of an effort!).

Yes, we tried Gold for our Amouage Sample project yesterday.
(We don’t read reviews or press releases or descriptions, so our reactions are very spontaneous haha)

    Gold Man

    Me: I smell rose
Mr Jiji: It smells like lily, oh and its quite musky, very musky.
Me: There is a lot going on, I can hardly pick apart the notes, and it has vintage feel, like those old Chanel perfumes
Me (After 2,5 hours), it gets so much better over time, I smell sandalwood
Mr Jiji: Yes its woody and so musky. Very nice.
Me: I love the musk in this one

    Gold Woman
Me: Does it have aldehydes? Mr Jiji looks at me puzzled (I try to explain, but he got distracted)
Mr Jiji: its lightyellow to me and I get lemon or something fruity
Me: Lily of the valley, no doubt, and rose
Mr Jiji: Its also quite spicy, maybe cardamom? It feels more spacious than the Man version!
Mr Jiji (after two hours) this sure is powdery
Me: Yes, probably some iris/orris there, oh and its quite salty, maybe some amber. I also get more musk now, this is better.
Mr jiji: I agree, it gets better after a few hours!

I looked up some reviews afterwards and saw that the Man version had a lot of dislikes on fragrantica. I was wondering if a lot of men consider this too feminine (because it kinda has that Chanel no 5 vibe going on). But my husband thinks it is totally unisex.

Aww, i forgot to ask if he saw one of these Pantone colours when we tried it. But maybe Gold Woman is the yellow one top left?

I cant stop sniffing my arm today btw and in the dry down Gold Man reminds me a bit of Siberian Musk.
I have not tested them side by side, but I am going to. Maybe my nose is totally fooling me or my scent memory is just way off. We shall see…

Amouage Gold Woman is still my favourite Amouage, and my favourite aldehydic floral. The drydown is to die for.
I love your impromptu reports about your sniffing of this line. Have you tried Lyric and Jubilation yet?

The Gold duo are one of my favourites so far.
i also love it that the man and woman version smell related (cant say that of all the Amouages).

Jubilation, oh yess, while the man version is robust and good, i dont feel its that special.
Now the woman version….on my skin the first few hours were okay but kinda linear and a bit too ‘soapy’ (cant explain why, maybe the ylang? ), but it suddenly turns into one of the best fragrances ever. Mossy and with a resinous drydown to die for. Such a shapeshifter right? I may need a decant or travel size just to get to that phase. Haha.

Paraphrasing you: “on my skin the first few hours were okay but kinda linear … but it suddenly turns into one of the best fragrances ever….. Such a shapeshifter right?” This is my experience of nearly all of the Amouage Women that I’ve tried. Lyric, Memoir, Epic, Jub and the most surprising for me was Beloved which I was completely bored with when I first sampled and then thankfully tried again when I was about to sell it. (Or maybe Memoir which was a turnoff for me when I first tried it, way too intense like a kick in the face almost — but then later….) It’s all about the drydown with A!

I too am loving these side by side reports with you and Mr Jiji!!

I prefer Dia for daytime – I find the Gold a bit too florid on me to subject others in my office to it. To me, Dia has the same timbre, but isn’t quite as flashy about it

I love Dia so much. I have tried Gold a few times here and there, and in moments I can love it, but it’s often just a bit too much for me. I’m wondering if maybe it’s just too warm for it where I live.

Dia is not in the Woman set :( .. in the Man set it is though. Maybe I’ll order a separate sample so we can still try this one as a duo.

I love Pantone Pink lavender! As a child, I had such an obsession with pinks and purples, everything I had (bedroom walls included) was one of those two colors.
Unfortunately, I didn’t think about a Spring-like fragrance today, it’s rainy and cold, I chose Sarah Jessica Parker’s Covet, I am craving the cashmere musk and woods dry down.
    Happy Thursday-it’s almost-Friday!

Thank you! Everything went fine. We ended up in Amada at the Brookfield Place. Nice tapas there and very convenient since mom wanted to do some shopping for a birthday present in the area. I had a hard time avoiding the Hermes and Jo Malone perfume stores there, but I did not want to make mom too tired with extra walking. I know, I know, excuses! But I survived… for now! ????

SOTD is D’Orsay Tilleul for Meadowlark. Not a perfect match, since Tilleul is more green, but it’s definitely about spring/summer and sunshine.

You smell wonderful! We have a lot of linden trees here along the Front Range, but they won’t bloom until early June. I usually break out Tilleul by May, because I’m so impatient for the linden blossoms to arrive! I’m hoping that the linden tree we planted last summer in the yard will have a few blossoms, even if it’s still just a 6′ sapling.

Here they start blooming even later – mid/late June, so I associate linden blossom with summer. We have a lot of them, and I love walking when they bloom – the air if filled with this scent, so sunny and fresh…

We’re expecting to hit 71F today (!), so I’m feeling that Cherry Tomato color, and AdV Pelargonium seemed to be a perfect fit. I’m reminded of summers on my grandma’s front porch in the North Carolina mountains, and the dozens of bright orangey-red geraniums that outlined it on 3 sides.

For the longest time I associated it with the grey-blue Hermes bag featured in your 2014 Cuir d’Ange review. Now I associate it with the pink color on the box, which looks like Pantone Pink Lavender to my eye, so I’m with you, Courmarin.

Incidentally, I’ve always thought the Kelly Caleche ad is the perfect visual for Love, Chloe.

It’s a 31 Rue Cambon kind of day… I am going to get s*** done! I associate this scent with golden colors, so I will pick Meadowlark to fit it into the spring palette.

We have a running thing at work about Pantone lately. One of my coworkers showed us the work of this artist and it’s fascinating!: http://www.angelicadass.com/humanae-work-in-progress/

This sent me down a rabbit hole trying to figure out my skin’s Pantone color (unsuccessfully), which led to many hours looking up my Color Me Beautiful palette. I think I’m a Deep Autumn.

Thanks for linking – love this! I am reminded of an article about skin color and undertones that I ran across recently and found fascinating. I *think* it was about finding a foundation with the right undertone, but the general gist was that asian skin is always assumed to have yellow undertones, while in reality there is a huge range – pink, green, orange, etc. The blogger had tons of photos of herself, friends and family to make the point, with lots of info on color theory.

    Good morning Y’all…

Wearing my all time favorite, Chanel No 5 Eau Première. Hoping this gives me the confidence to face the insurance auditors that are riffling thru my chart reviews at this moment, looking for stuff to complain about. (So far, no problems!) At the same time, my oldest is at a 2 day SkillsUSA culinary competition trying to win some serious scholarship money, and my hubs is the faculty sponsor and will gone for 2 days too. At the same time, co-planning the middle school band’s spring party tomorrow night, doing the shopping and writing checks for this and that. I GOT THIS!

Carry me thru, CNo5 Eau Première! (Laying in pharmacy floor, in fetal position crying….ha ha ha ha) :)

I got so excited to learn about Hyrax and Moth from Zoologist that I doused myself with Civet, matching no. 18 Emperador, I think. I’m curious about Moth because I’m afraid of them after an experience with one that got under my sheet when I was young.

Fresh, light, pink rose. A little sour ( I like sour), maybe a hint of fruit up top. Not very exciting but I like it. Probably better in summer.

I have used RealReal since they started. Everything I have sent them has sold almost immediately. They do go over everything very carefully, so if you are buying, you can trust what you are getting.

If you have 10 items, their concierge service comes to you. ( in LA, anyway)

They do keep a pretty steep cut. Somethings I sell on eBay instead.

No fragrance yet. It’s quite wonderful to be home and sleeping in my own bed even if I don’t have contract.

I have a deep desire to own Jo Malone Golden Needle Tea.

I bought a pair of black strappy Stuart Weitzman sandals on Real Real. I had bought the same sandals new and wore them for years and LOVED them… but I wore them to an outdoor event that killed them… they weren’t being made any more so I went to Real Real. The size they sent me was not the size advertised–but in their defense I think the pair I got must have been samples as no size was printed anywhere on the shoes. Anyway, they took back the shoes even though they were non-returnable (I think they may have been on sale) and were very apologetic. –The epilogue to this already too long comment is that eventually I found the shoes in brown on eBay in my size, in decent shape, being sold for a pittance–and snapped them up!

The temperature dropped to the 40s and the rain is back today so I’m wearing Diptyque Benjoin Boheme. I didn’t realize how much I love this until I retried it last night. The bad thing about getting in on lots of splits at once, and thus receiving lots of decants at once, is that some perfumes get overlooked. BB reminds me of how my grandmother smelled, which probably adds another layer to my love for it. Others that remind me of her are Bvlgari Jasmin Noir and TDC Jasmin de Nuit, though I think BB shares a lot more with Jasmin Noir than the JdN.

Just landed in the US the other night and totally jetlagged. One of the stewardesses on the Chennai to Heathrow leg of the journey was wearing vintage Knowing, so I had to give her a compliment. She was an exotic looking lady and the perfume suited her perfectly.

I am staying with a friend for now, so not yet reunited with my perfume that is stored at my ex’s house. I was going through some boxes to get Winter clothing out – by the way it’s the 4th Nor’easter in March, but we are not getting it too bad here in Somerville MA – and found a small bottle of Sideris which was much loved before I left on my trip so only a couple drops left. But alas I forgot to bring it out of storage with the coat, boots, etc. I’m looking forward to the Galop that is at my other friend’s house in the neighborhood. I think that will be my end of the season snowstorm perfume for now. In any case there are some delicious traces of perfume on my clothing that has been in storage since last Spring.

Digging through the bottles my sister left here. Most are Avon minis back from when my mom sold Avon. There is a Nirvana Black rollerball, a big bottle of Couvent des Minimes Orange Blossom flower water, Allure EdP. Never worn or tried Allure, so I think that’s my scent for the day… no idea on color for this one. No idea how old it is.

It has been gray and overcast and rainy since I arrived to visit my Dad. This is the weather I remember as a kid from growing up here. Be nice to see the sun at some point while I’m here, though.

The gorgeous remnants of the vintage Caleche Soie de Parfum I sprayed last night, as I contemplated swapping it away. It’s been with me since the 90’s, and like my university textbooks, feels more like a talisman than a scent at this point. But I gave the books away recently and lived, so…

Hello, friends. It’s very rainy and awful out. My commute took 1.5x as long as usual because of upturned vehicles and cars that slid past barriers onto grassy buffers. Californians can’t drive in the rain, and for the past few weeks, our weather has been like the weather of a *shudder* normal place.

I thought I had drained my Portrait of a Lady sample, but nope, there was just about enough for one more day left. So I’m in that (matching none of the colors above), and wondering how long I should wait around to see if I find a discounted bottle of the stuff before I just say screw it and pay full (exorbitant) price.

I’m not even sure Seattleites can drive (well) in rain (I include myself) but it is actually more difficult in dry & scorched places as the dry conditions make surfaces more impervious. I’ve not tried PoaL in a couple of years and feel like I need to give it another go. Do FM bottles ever show up discounted?

      Be careful on the roads!

You’re right! I think about how I wish they would do some kind of humidity conditioning on highways. I wonder if that’s prohibitively expensive; probably is.

I saw a bottle of Iris Poudré go on eBay for like $160, which is pretty discounted! I don’t remember that scent well enough to want to spend that kind of money on it, but I’ve been occasionally searching for PoaL on eBay. I might get a pack of three 10ml sprays (something like $160 I think) and split them at the next splitmeet or something.

The 3-pack would be a smart move. They also might be cheaper in Paris. My recollection is that those sets are way cheaper at FiF than at US online stores.

I think it was in Palm Springs where I noticed they have massive storm drain structures. Around these parts you just see little grates (which only occasionally overflow.) But runoff in desert conditions is a different thing; up here it mostly percolates. There are substances you can pave roads with (also some sprays IIRC) that are more impervious (than concrete and the like) but I don’t think it lasts very long and yes, would be a majorly $ infrastructure project – and probably not money well spent, all things considered.

    Good morning,
I’m in an almost match in color with Autumn Woods (Burren perfumery), which smells of blackberry leaves and for me personally, reminds me of our summer trips to Ireland, which usually include cool days with plenty of rain (my phone literally drowned in my rain jacket pocket last summer during a 3hour fairly miserable beach horse ride). We have such a rainy day here today in the California Central Valley, so now I’m craving scones and tea served in a warm pottery showroom cafe.
Lots of swap meet items arriving here today, got the first package yesterday – oh what fun! Happy Thursday.

I am in a concoction that would make many run screaming. I started with dab test of Bombay Bling; nice airy open then it went to what I thought was melon, and now have been educated as mango + cumin. But still thinking “melon” I went exploring, first to Emotionelle, then to Grain de Sable, then chasing cumin to McQueen Kingdom. Stay far away; you have been warned.

Yeah, it’s funny, I’m getting much better about identifying notes but it’s still a process — I’m much more likely to take a first whiff and simply be reminded of some other scent I’ve smelled before. And then it’s a mad dash through the bottles to try and figure out which. And often they are NOT a match… But I keep track of these experiences all the same as part of my learning. I only ID’ed ‘cumin’ by looking at Fragrantica. I will be trying BB again fresh one of these days and see what I can identify the next time. A big thank you to you for making all of this possible! I am also looking forward to trying the Arielle soon — I would not have known that there are feelings in common between them.

In Bruise Violet that I acquired in a swap. Gosh I have expansive tastes when it comes to violet. This one starts with violet and a hit of grapefruit–gives the scent a “stewed” feel that lifts after about 10-20 minutes. The scent morphs into a very pretty, but not too pretty (think thick plum lipstick and a leather jacket over a violet top), violet iris.

Spritzed myself with a small dose of Vanilla Hinoki early this a.m. Packages have begun arriving and I’m now in Swapmeet Melange.

This morning I’m wearing Rhubarb Ecarlate because it will be gone by the time I meet up with all the scent-phobes in chorus this evening. I love it and maybe should have bought the giant bottle instead of the 100ml.

Wearing Diptyque Fleur de Peau to go with Almost Mauve. I like Fleur de Peau and even if it is a very clean white musk, it doesn’t remind me of shampoo or laundry detergent. I enjoy the peppery iris and super mildly animalic musk in the beginning and wish Diptyque featured that more. It’s been a pleasure wearing it on mildly rainy days and think I’ll be reaching for it on easy and cool spring days.

Tempo is love. Soft chocolatey patchouli, it reminds me a little bit of Chanel Coromandel.

    Hope everyone is well.

A bright and sunny day here today. What a contrast from yesterday! Total snow amount for me = 12 inches. But due to the March sun, it is melting away quickly. I’ve been hearing the sound of drip, drip, drip all day. ????

SOTD = Soivohle Geranium Rose Mint, from the sample stash. Plenty of geranium and mint on me, barely anything in the way of rose. It doesn’t match the swatches above… this would be a Day-Glo green straight out of the 1980’s.

Started the day in Twilly. It’s really nice -funny how the sample smells better than the bottle. And ended day of packing wearing Heure Exquise seal from the lovely Coin-Op. I’ll wear that tomorrow. It’s gorgeous.
Move day is tomorrow. And I’m not ready. ????

    It’s my Friday!! Yay!

I’m wearing many sprays of vintage Diorissimo; one of my favorite frags from years ago. I bought this bottle from the bay about a year ago.

Today I got 3 complements on my goofy Skechers bob shoes (with a bunch of cat faces on them). I think everyone needed the laugh!

SOTD = Guerlain Baiser de Russie

I would match this with Pantone Coconut Cream from a cuddliness standpoint. The juice is yellowish greenish and I will not spell out what substance has the same color.

If I didn’t look at the notes in Fragrantica, I would say it has Tonka, vanilla, musk and something fruity. Occasionally, it gives off a classic vibe – I wonder what note causes this? It has a very soft sillage and is perfect for the office.

I love the fragrance; however, what I noticed is that it does not play nicely with certain foods (e.g. cauliflower, mild chili). Paired with these 2, they combined to become “bad breath”. Has anyone experienced this with BdR or any other fragrance?

I will be back in the office tomorrow and yay, because I get cabin fever if I work from home for more than 2 consecutive days!

You mean smelling the food + smelling the perfume at the same time = halitosis smell? Can’t say that I have.

I worked from home for 3 months one time and really enjoyed it.
