Monday scent of the day 3/5

Posted by Robin on 5 March 2018 329 Comments

Happy Monday, and happy Absinthe Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

It's a bit early in the day for absinthe, so I'm in Demeter Gingerale.

Reminder: on 3/9, we're doing Is it real, or is it Memorex?... wear a fragrance that photorealistically duplicates the smell of something else. Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

        :)
Actually, my work is closed today. I work in a different county which was hit pretty hard…fallen trees, no power, dangerous driving conditions since Friday.

We lost power on Friday but it came back (luckily…many of my neighbors still don’t have power)…our internet was down for three days, however.

and now another storm is heading our way Tuesday night into Thursday morning…..and now y’all know why I don’t like snow-LOL!

Yikes! My parents live in the northern part of the state and get those kind of extended power outages too. I finally talked them into getting a generator a couple of years ago.
I think we’re supposed to get that storm starting tonight.
          Come on spring!

Ironically we have a generator but it may not even work cause we never used it :(

I think that storm is starting on your end and heading to our end……I am crossing my fingers that the power stays on for us.

Ha! No worries…I got you :)

The St Clair Scents are fantastic….I have been going ga-ga over them as of late….Jessica did a really amazing review of them not that long ago….they are quite complex and have a high percentage of naturals so they smell true to life (versus synthetic) so I thought they would be good for this week’s CP.

In Jean Patou Sira des Indes. A forgotten friend that I really love and should wear more often.

Very busy at work and also very stressed because I am running later to take my dog to the vet. For the past two days he has been pacing a lot and he seems to be in pain. I hope is nothing serious.

    Have a nice Monday everyone!

Hope your puppy just has a sprain that needs to heal…..when we adopted our kitten (now cat) 2 years ago, my hubby accidentally stepped on him in the middle of the night. Poor kitty hobbled around for 2 weeks and then recovered completely! (We did take him to the vet for pain meds too…) Anyhoo, I’m rambling….hope it’s a simple recovery! :)

Miller Harris L’Air de Rien – I am waking up in a bedroom ( mine? ) after a weekend of semi-debauchery.

I am wearing Bijou Romantique for Memorex… because my one note about it in my perfume spreadsheet says “strong scent memory”. But I’m hardly getting it at all today! I wonder if there’s a difference between my decant and my sample? There is a hint of a tug on some memory from childhood… like the inside of doll’s heads almost?

I would like to know the community’s thoughts on getting back up bottles or BUBs please. ;)

I, of course, dread reformulation or discontinuation as much as the next perfume fiend, but, other than a treasure trove of vintage Coco which some may remember that I stockpiled in 2016 like it would keep away zombies ;) , I don’t actually have many back up bottles. I do have some large bottles like the 200 ml Chanel Exclusifs which are kind of like 4 bottles in one though.

I am debating getting a back up bottle right now…but do I really need if I have a mostly full 2.5 bottle now?

Would love for folks to weigh in on their own BUB counts, logic and thoughts to either push me over the cliff or get me to step back. (Disclaimer: I don’t really want to step back. I am going to rehome and/or sell some of vintage Coco so others may survive if/when the zombies do come.)

I can tell you that I have a BUB of Songes, not sure if that is shocking or not :)
      That is my only one..

I only have a BUB of Omnia – I bought two when I found out it was discontinued and was cheap at discounters, but that was early days of my perfume addiction when I had a lot less perfume. Since my collection has grown, I now wear it only a couple times a year, so I sold/traded of 1 of my BUBs and am considering getting rid of the last one. I guess this means my take is BUBs are not necessary for me because my tastes change and I like to wear variety, so I’m unlikely to use up anything I have a FB of.

I have boat loads of vintage Bal and Mitsouko. Theorema is another that I have at least 5 backup bottles. Having loads of those in backup are wonderful. Current things like Chanel no 5, not so much.

Vintage and discontinued loves are the ones you should hoard.

I used to have a BUB of Theorema, but at some point I swapped it away. It was BNIB (in that cute triangular bag), and I sometimes feel a twinge of regret. Then I go open the perfume cabinet, and I feel better.

I’m not the best one to ask, as I have two storage bins of backups. But I do buy a backup bottle (or two if they are small, like 30-50 mls) of things that are discontinued or big loves. Sounds like you want the BUB, so just buy it. :-)

I’m the wrong person to ask as I apparently have no self control but… I subscribe to the philosophy of BUBs, at least for d/c’ed scents that I am in love with, and when I get them at a decent price. I figure I can always sell them again (which I have done once). My primary fear is that we’ll have a massive worldwide economic meltdown and go into a Mad Max type situation where all the “investing” I’ve done in scarves and perfumes will be worthless and I won’t be able to liquidate the collection and will starve. :-) Since I tend not to use the d/c’ed scents hardly ever. So my logic is clearly flawed and you should not listen.

Perhaps perfume will end up being even MORE valuable: Since water will be scarce, no one will bathe, so scent will be required for any decent social interactions!

(See how easy it is for me to justify BUBs??)

Hmmm, a tough one. I guess I’m not a “real” perfumista because my take on it has a definite buddhist flavor: Life (and perfume) is ephemeral. Nothing lasts. Practice non- attachment. Live in the moment. Let life come and go like the flow of water.

However, when my dog was ill, I was sick with worry and anxiety because I’m very much attached to her, so forget everything I just wrote. If you want a BUB, get it. Period.

Deva, I thought you were gonna say that when your dog was ill, you thought about cloning her (Back Up Pup?). :-)

I can so relate to both of your points; I like to think I’m not attached to all my BUBs. :-D

I’ve also thought about cloning my dog, so there’s that.

(I hope my lighthearted comment is not taken the wrong way – I actually really admire people who are into perfume yet don’t hoard! I know I can learn from that.)

You have a mostly full 2.5 OZ bottle? If that’s the case, you’ll probably never get through the first bottle, will you?

I’m not a BUB buyer, myself, though there are a few bottles that I worry will not actually last a lifetime (mostly Chanel exclusifs) and some that were suddenly discontinued that I’d have bought more of with a heads-up (Champagne de Bois.) But anything 1 oz+ will likely take me a decade or more to get through even with regular use. And it’s hard to anticipate what I’ll want to wear in 10 years.

But then again you never know what’ll happen. Will it get discontinued and cheaper (Bvlgari Black) or discontinued and unfathomably expensive (Chanel exclusifs in EDT)?

Wearing Mona di Orio Vanille today and to me it is quite close to Bois des Iles…would have to compare properly but definitely in the same genre to my nose. No one independently cited BdI in the reminds me of section on Fragrantica but I could be the first. ;)

I have a few backup bottles, mostly of Fendi original (six bottles), Lancome’s Magie Noir vintage extrait (two backup bottles) and Laura Mercier’s Minuit Enchante (one backup bottle).
That’s not too bad. My FB count is probably around 75 total, including backups.

I laud your wisdom in getting backups of vintage Magie Noir! I made the stupid mistake (and I KNEW better!) of spritzing a blotter yesterday with the travesty that Lancome now calls Magie Noir. I nearly burst into tears right there in the store.

Sadly, Magie Noire is a shadow of the beautiful chypre she once was. I wish I had stocked up on the body products, the body cream and powder was so luxurious and fragrant!

I don’t normally want BUBs ~~except~~ in the following cases: the perfume is cheapish, perfect as it is, and something I reach for ALL the time (ex: Chanel L’eau). In that case, it just makes sense to get it, because when it’s reformulated it’ll be way more money and hard to find.

I’ll also do a BUB if it’s something irreplaceable, perfect, I reach for it all the time, and a BUB falls from the heavens into my lap (ex: Chanel Cuir de Russie vintage edt).

So in both cases: it has to be perfect and I have to reach for it ALL the time. If I don’t wear it at least once a week, there’s no sense in a back up.

These are also my tests for buying full bottles now. Too often in the past, I bought a bottle of something I respected but didn’t reach for all the time. And those purchases just make me feel icky. I like a wardrobe of things that I wear all the time. I feel guilty having expensive perfumes that I don’t wear. I wish I didn’t have a box staring at me, waiting to be swapped away.

Thank GOODNESS the swapmeet is coming! I have so many things that I need to pass on: Tom Ford Shanghai Lily, Amouage, Le Labo Iris 39, L’Artisan Premier Figuier, Atelier Colognes, Jo Malone set. So many things that are beautiful but I just don’t reach for.

Yes! Just one of the Opus.

I don’t know how everyone else feels about frag purchases, but I kick myself when I purchase things that I don’t really love and then hold onto them. While with swaps and decants, I don’t feel at all guilty. But I just don’t like having a box of bottles sitting here unloved. It just feels gluttonous.

Good point about reaching for it/wearing it. I am the same way…I feel bad if I have bottles that sit and languish…they aren’t doing anyone any good languishing in my closet of shame…your closet may have a different name but you get the point. ;)

On my skin, it pulls more like a soft sandalwood, but not exactly. For me, it’s a scent memory of something I’ve smelled before (or similar, anyway), but I can’t quite place it yet. One of the YouTubers I really enjoy (BeautyMeow) says that her skin pulls straight up cedar planks like Elisa P. describes. Fascinating stuff! Some folks are completely anosmic to it! :)

I meant Iso E in its pure form, ie: Molecule 01. Sunny Side Up has other notes that create a sandalwood accord. The JHAG is a pretty good dupe for Le Labo Santal 33 and less expensive!

Today it’s sunny and I’m starting to feel better after a weekend of feeling like a truck ran over me. Gaze is home this week on spring break and my daffodils are all coming up, sooooo . . . Le Temps d’une Fete. Of course.

Participating purely by accident today… in Oeillet Bengale, which is rose mimicking carnation…. I love this and don’t wear it near often enough.

Girding my loins to get my dearest old girl, Penny, in her carrier to the vet. She’s a bit over 17. This is just to check her overall heath…likely more kidney function loss, so I want to know what food to give her and any possible meds. She gets a bit of an acidic stomach but fights like a tiger if I try to give her Pepcid.

Thanks jjlook- I asked vet about supplements and she said we could discuss after blood work comes back.

Got some free food samples to try out; had vet give her some fluids; got better advice on Pepcid. We will see what blood work says. The fluids perked her up, so that might be something I can do going forward.

I’m in a combo of leftovers from yesterday – Baccarat Rouge + Flowerhead. The Flowerhead was one spray only late in the evening and I was surprised by how much I loved its bubblegum jasmine, though that may be only because the BR is so darned subtle. BR does linger forever and right now I feel like my whole life may be mildly tinted by it, but no matter how much I spray, I still feel like it’s never enough of a ‘hit’. I want BR 540,000 instead of BR 5.4 (if that makes any sense). Maybe my nose has grown too accustomed to it just lately.

Ooh, wish we could trade! On me, Baccarat Rouge is a million-decibel dose of ambergris and nothing else. It’s the olfactory equivalent of sitting on the speakers at a rock concert. Wouldn’t mind giving you some of that volume to bring us both to reasonable levels. :)

That is so fascinating! Why did I assume that this is light on everyone? I wonder if it has something to do with the sprayer, and/or the colder weather. I am going to investigate! If only I had your full-on rock concert experience even just once, so that I can better appreciate what I get instead!

See above! I like it, especially the opening, which is similar to Shalimar. I’m just realizing I may need to apply more generously. It’s a rather quiet scent. No gourmand vibes at all. So that could be a plus or a minus, depending on how you feel about vanilla.

The opening reminds me of bug spray..
Laughing out loud thinking how the same scent can smell so differently…
I am going to keep trying this one. I didn’t give up when I first applied Alahiiiiine, it took me several wearings to swoon..

In AG L’heure exquise, a decant from the freebiemeet (thanks Erica!). I can’t claim it’s photorealistic of anything, but: in my grandmother’s apartment’s bedroom, there was a dresser on which she kept her perfume bottles. They must all have been fairly old, because to my young self, they all smelled more or less the same (I have no idea what they were, though 4711 is a safe bet, maybe along with a scent called Tosca that seemed popular with grandmothers in the 80ies). Everytime I walked (ran?) by the dresser, the bottles would all rattle because the floor was uneven. L’heure exquise reminds me of that experience because to me, it has a strong vintage vibe.
    Happy Monday!

Yum, gingerale. As a born Michigander, I’m partial to Vernors.

SOTD is Agua de Colonia Concentrada ’cause I needed something with a little zip this morning. It just so happens that the opening lemon note in this is quite realistic (as opposed to the unfortunate fake-lemon floor-cleaner note that appears in some other lemon fragrances)

Oh, forgot to mention that I visited the Cleveland Museum of Art over the weekend and they have a scent-based artwork! (I think it’s new? Or possibly I missed it the last couple times I was there) Here’s a description: http://www.clevelandart.org/art/2014.403

You open up the door, pop your head inside to take a whiff, and… yuck! Both fragrances were made to be unpleasant (words like stale, moldy, and rotten come to mind), and both were designed by Christophe Laudamiel. I was at the museum with my bf and he thought I was a total nerd for recognizing the perfumer’s name :)

One wonders why they decided to go with unpleasant smells? In the right context, any scent can be thought-provoking, but something pleasant-smelling might make people more eager to engage.

And yes, you are a nerd. As are the rest of us :D

SotM = Masque Romanza, a dab from a sample

Romanza is diffusive and lasts. I wore it yesterday and could still smell it on my wrist this morning so I added more. It smells of spring flowers and dusty hay, and feels pensive and a bit dark. Fitting for a Monday morning.

A lovely NSTer recently sent me some vintage perfume nips, so I decided to try one this morning. I randomly chose Black Satin by Angelique. The only description of it that I have found is at Cleopatra’s Boudoir (and I don’t really agree with her impression of it). Anyway, to me it is aldehydic and sorta chypre-ish, and I would surely have loved to have a bottle back in the day. It was created in 1946 and discontinued probably sometime in the 1970s.
Coming back to the present: it’s sunny out, and I spotted some daffodils in bloom yesterday! Yay!!!

Mmm, ginger. Does anyone know if ginger greens are edible/yummy? I suppose Google knows, if I’m particularly curious.

I’m in Douce Amere, which is a photorealistic version of nothing at all. It is quite delicious, though, and was perfect for the 35degF morning we suffered through (that’s cold for March in the Bay Area). Mostly I wore it to finish off my sample. It’s so satisfying to throw those little vials out. One more down, about eleven thousand to go.

Today’s SOTD is Oscar de la Renta’s Live In Love, a gift from a FL friend and it’s (surprisingly) quite nice!
A spicy green/floral, with hyacinth, galbanum, bergamot, lily-of-the-valley, orchid, jasmine, orange flower, rose, sandalwood, cedar, woods, amber and musk.
I think it wore better in the FL heat and humidity, but it’s a lovely spring scent – each time I wear it, I’ll be reminded of my lovely vacation with friends and family.

    1) SOTD: Prada Fleur d’Oranger. Perfect for today’s mild temps.

    2. My Oscar card was actually 70% on this year! Shape of Water of course won for Best Pic, and it really was the best amongst all of those nominated. My congrats to Jordan Peele- I know want to read his screenplay. Of course Coco won- as it deserved to. Sorry, DDL- Gary Oldman was gonna get it (although Denzel did turn in a stellar performance). Francis McD deserved her nod, even though 3 Billbords…was a LifeTime movie made in the 90s (both compliment and insult) Allison Janney deserved it for I Tonya. And that dude got the jet ski!

DDL was marvelous but I just knew GO was going to get it- GO somehow is able to act the hell out of a role while buried in makeup and props, and he completely disappears in a role.

BUT I feel you for DDL – this was his last role before retirement from film, and Phantom Thread was absolutely bomkers and deserved a Best Lead Actor nod!

The Darkest Hour seemed to have been designed to win an Oscar for the leading actor, which is always hard to compete with.

That said, I’ve not seen Phantom Thread. Doesn’t DDL already have an Oscar or two? I was surprised Gary Oldman was only getting his 2nd.

Oh, The Darkest Hour was complete Oscar bait; so was Phantom Thread. The thing is timing. So while both films got awards, it did not have the feel of the zeitgeist like Shape of Water did.

DDL already has Oscars and numerous other stage and screen awards; it would have been nice to send him off with another, though.

Didn’t know that one was controversial either. I have a general question about these love it or hate it scents: is it due to skin chemistry or noses that people pick up the awful notes? Even if something smells pleasant to me I don’t want to subject people near me to vomity smells if that’s what it’s like for them.

I like to add in turmeric and ginger to the honey lemon mix. I use powdered ginger when I don’t have fresh, it’s more pungent. I feel that helped keep my last cold mild.

          This! Me too!

Though I have to say— I read about ACV on the people’s pharmacy, while searching for a treatment for my son’s bad skin condition. Multiple doctor’s visits and prescription creams did NOTHING after over year of trying. But two weeks after trying ACV topically, it was GONE. I now think ACV is magical juice.

SOTD is Apoteker Tepe’s Pale Fire, which I snatched up from their website just after they announced their closure. Some of their fragrances were challenging, juxtaposing some usual notes in ways that didn’t end up working well on me, but Pale Fire is one I really like (and I love the bottle). It kind of anticipated Ummagumma, as they share the rich labdanum-chocolate-tonka/vanilla vibe. And while Pale Fire does not officially contain any incense notes, I swear that I smell the same frankincense vibe that I get from Ummagumma.

Where Pale Fire diverges from the richer, slightly spicier Ummagumma is in its boozy whiskey note and the oakmoss note that gives it a greener tinge (whereas Ummagumma is woodier). The overall effect of Pale Fire is lighter and airier than Ummagumma. They are different enough to justify owning both, and I think that Pale Fire can probably work later into the spring season than can the deeper, thicker Ummagumma.

I’m sorry to see Apoteker Tepe go – I hate seeing any indie perfumer close shop – and I’m happy that I had the opportunity to catch Pale Fire before it disappeared for good.

I am in No. 19 today just because.

Will probably not be commenting much this week. Leaving tomorrow for Florida….3 days for work and then then (joy of all joys!) I will get to spend the weekend with my guy! Trying to decide what will be mild weather and beach appropriate for the rest of the week! Will be at a gulf coast beach Tues-Thurs and then an Atlantic side beach Thurs evening through Sunday. :)

I’m in Black Cashmere, from a decant purchased on ebay. I really like this, and finally understand why it gets so much love here. It seems to strike the perfect balance between a comfort scent and a spicy incense scent. Wondering about the age of the bottle…but that’s what you deal with when you love the discontinued, eh?

I’m wearing the insanely beautiful Romanza this Monday. Last week when I wore L’Attesa, I told myself to wear Romanza again soon. This is the perfect day for it. Why did MM have to make two beautiful perfumes that may be full bottle worthy after mt decants are gone? I may even add Tango to that list for 3 FBW scents from them.

Today has definitely been a “Phooey!” worthy Monday.

Woke up early to the sound of one of our cats throwing up. Then I had a dentist appointment which, unfortunately. had a bit of an issue. I had mentioned that something felt “Weird”. Not painful or uncomfortable, just not normal. My dentist did not like what she saw in that area, so I now have a consultation appointment with a periodontist next week. Oh joy.

SOTD = Jacomo Silences, from the sample stash and a generous NSTer. Thank you! I have been enjoying it all weekend, and might very well wear it back to the dentist’s office. It is exactly the kind of scent I have been wanting to wear right now.

SoTD is la Femme Boheme thanks to Melisand61 at the split meet.
I have been curious about this one for awhile , and it took me a few tries to figure it out, not enough sprays I guess – thanks also to Hajusuuri from last Friday’s post for the recommendation. This was too soft, just honey – weak at first and a faint trace leather that I normally adore but seemed too pale, so I added creme to give it more Omph, no go. Next I tried amping up the Jasmine with Face oil by Mandy Aftel – hoping to bring out the sweetness of the Amber. It worked well – still no personality. Many sprays -5 did it. I guess I really have scent eating skin. This is perfect now- shows itself but not loud. I smell my Jasmine And my Amber, a little leather too on me! Body chemistry is a trip!

For spine-strengthening. It is going to be an intense next few days at work, even more so than usual..

I’ve begun to wear my Splitmeet spoils. First up yesterday was Aroma A Geisha Noire. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you to cazaubon for hosting the split!

Useless things people do that annoy me:
It was way after 5PM, people are bundled up in their winter coat, scarf and hat with their bag in tow. One person got in the elevator with me (we’re on the top floor of an elevator bank). I pressed the button to get down to the Lobby and the L lit up. The elevator stopped halfway down and a woman with HER winter coat, scarf, hat AND gloves got on, took one look at the panel and presets the lit up L AGAIN! Why?

People are dumb. It’s really the only answer. My store has closed for a week due to remodeling. We have a six foot sign in front of the door that says CLOSED. Yet, at least once an hour, people come banging, banging! On the door asking if we are open. Sigh…..
