Last day of January, Hump Day, Backward Day, plus Super Blue Blood Moon. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wafting spring flowers with Carven Le Parfum.
Reminder: on 2/2, we're doing Groundhog Day...assemble some winter- and spring-appropriate samples in a bowl, pick one at random, then tell us if spring will be early or late this year.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I saw the moon this morning..gorgeous.
Mx on my wrists and Marbert Man on my sweater.
Robin- what was the name of the lamp you recommended for SAD and can it be bought on amazon?
CAUZEBON- thank you immensely for your recommendation of my marzipan scent in Desert Essence Sweet Almond Lotion…my local health food store carries that brand and I am going to sample it when next I go there.
You’re welcome!
Sorry I misspelled your name 🙁
Verilux HappyLight Liberty 10,000 LUX Light Therapy
Do bear in mind it is not an instant fix! More like it builds up over time.
And adding, I hate winter and I’m definitely less cheerful in January than I am in August, but I do not really consider myself to have SAD, or at least, not a serious case, and I originally bought the light hoping it would help my son with sleep issues.
If you do have SAD, you might want to do more investigation before you buy one.

Thank you!!! that article was very informative.
Just looking up perfumes, read the nst review of:
Hilde Soliani Una Tira L’Altra & Conaffetto
Cherries & almonds – maybe you could layer them – just throwing it out there 🙂
Great idea!!!!
In Black Perfecto (thanks Hajusuuri!). Love it, especially the cherry note. It is perfect for the freezing day we have here today.
I also saw the moon very early this morning on my way to work. Really amazing. Made me wonder what perfume would match the moment….
You smell ah-mazing!
Hajusuuri, I also thank you too
Thank you!
I think you were wearing the perfect perfume to match that moment this morning when you saw the moon!
Another fan of Hajusuuri, such a generous and beautiful person!
The moon is lovely, saw it yesterday night while playing beach volley, being cancer in the zodiac, it gave me a lot of inspiration!
If we’re counting hajusuuri’s fans, please count me in 🙂
Me too.????
and me 🙂
I also am a big fan of hajusuuri, got a Black Perfecto decant from her as well. 🙂
Smelling great! I’m copying you!
Dans tes Bras by FM this morning. I love that the salesman at Barney’s San Francisco gives out several samples even when you only buy a travel size. This one is one of many I like but I think En Passant and Leau Hiver are the only I will ever consider for FB. Mostly because they are such classics. This one is more of a travel size for me. (Unless I win the lotto, the a FB of each:)
If you win the lotto do pick up a bottle or two for me 🙂
🙂
Oooh, you smell amazing!
you smell lovely.
Ohh, I love En Passant, but it’s a fleeting beauty, unfortunately doesn’t last very long on my normally scent-glue skin.
SipOTD Chai tea
Today is my fasting day (after noon) and also no perfume, so I will be living vicariously through all of you.
At Laudere there was no perfume at the cafe I went to, but I had a rose croissant for croissant day yesterday.
Oh they sometimes have perfume at Laudere? That’s neat. I had a croissant yesterday too at a conference, I was so happy to participate 🙂
happy fasting LTSG 🙂
The have home fragrances, and candles. They just released a perfume but I didn’t see it at the cafe.
Thank you, I will be making a yummy soup before my fast..to the kitchen I go…
Yum-hope the memory of the rose croissant will carry you through your fast!
When do you get to stop fasting?
tomorrow at sunrise, so its not too long noon to sunrise tomorrow
I did the groundhog grab bag and picked….Chloe Love Story
I have this sample for a while. I smell a fabric softener type scent followed by what I thought was caramel & patchouli, but may not be based on the listed notes – maybe I’m smelling fruitiness & patchouli.
I really wanted that bottle for awhile, but every time I tried it, instant headache. I don’t recall getting any patchouli from it.
I like the bottle too!
Caligna today, for I was feeling fruity. I finally read the notes list on this and that’s just… not at all what I smell, because what I smell is just nectarine nectarine nectarine.
I wish that’s what I smelled!
Wearing Shalimar because I dreamed about it last night. Although I love Shalimar, I hope this dream does not mean long winter.
I wore Shalimar yesterday and indeed, its one of the best!
I wore Shalimar last night!
SOTD is Penhaligon’s Iris Prima. I like this one more and more each time I wear it.
It’s a very pleasant perfume. I liked it when I tried it but then when I saw a bottle on sale (really good price), I tested it again and decided that i didn’t need it. But you smell nice.
I missed the moon! But that explains my teenagers last night….. 🙂
Went with Clinique Aromatics in White. The drydown on this is soooooo warm and cozy. Lasts 10-12 hours too.
I love winter perfumes…..
Aromatics in White is really pretty. It registers to me as more of a spring perfume, but maybe I need to look out for that cozy drydown next time.
I grabbed Maria Candida Gentile’s Cinabre from my grab bag today. That is three winter scents in a row.
Three winter scents in a row… ????
Shhh…. Don’t tell winter, but I think she’s doing reverse psychology. Smart thinking☺
Hope so!!! ????
I put three winter scent decants and three spring scent decants in a bag. I’ve been pulling one out each day. So far I’ve pulled out three winter scents, so only spring scents are left. So Friday, I’m bound to pull out a spring scent.
I spent $160 on medication for my dog. Now it looks like I will be set for the next year with his seizure medication. So I am sitting in vintage Bal looking at my budget and I think that I will be okay. I just wasn’t expecting the whole $160 only $75. After my shower, I’ll start wearing Theorema.
I so know that feeling. I gird myself for $80 for my cat’s meds, thinking I will avert sticker shock if I exaggerate what the cost will be. And then I am handed a bill for $167 for his meds…. and whomp! Sticker Shock!!!
Pets are expensive and that is why I use Good RX for when I go to my local pharmacy. And the $160 was with the Good RX coupon.
I found out my vet was wayyy overcharging me when I filled the prescription once at Costco. It was a third of the price the vet was charging me. So happy to find a cheaper alternative.
I use Allivet now, online. Much cheaper than my vet! My vet is not very happy about it, but since we spent a small house in bills last year, I really do not care. Kitty doesn’t mind either.
Costco is a great alternative. I do love my furry babies but their medical expenses (meds and special food) are pretty steep. They eat better than I, that’s for sure!
Glad it will work out, but wow, sorry!
Ouch on the medication bill! I understand that all too well. One of our cats has to eat a prescription kibble, and another one has asthma, so she uses a couple of inhalers. The vet we take the cats to suggested going to Costco for the inhalers, since it is the same medicines that humans use.
I just had to wear Coromandel again today since I enjoyed it so much yesterday. Maybe tomorrow too!
Keep smelling fantastic, Luna Green.
I need to stop hoarding my decant of the EDT and just wear it! You have convinced me that this needs to be my Thursday SOTD 🙂 .
Then my work here is done.
great choice.
You smell great!
A 3-day run of Coromandel sounds awesome.
I love that photo of the moon. For a minute I though it was a very moldy orange slice.
Aroma M Nobara-Cha. I could theoretically wear this for the remainder of the winter.
ha! I thought the photo was an opal.
That crossed my mind too until I saw the caption.
lol
high praise! I haven’t smelled Noraba-Cha. what is it like?
It’s an earthy, deep rose with a warm ambery/sandalwood base. Smells very natural to me, which also means it’s on the quiet side.
Aroma M sells a very reasonably priced little sample set of the Geisha series in edp. I am going to have to buy it. Tomorrow. So that it goes onto February’s tab, as January’s is already bloated 😉
Ha! I have plans for February as well.
The sample set is a nice deal and I’d consider it, but I really only have 4 more I want to try (Blue, Green, Marron, and Violet). Her line just really jives with me for some reason.
The photo is freaking amazing. I’m not a person who has much interest in space or science but the photos are absolutely mind-blowing. I’m also interested in hearing more about your SOTD!
Same with space photos. I had to recheck this one a couple of times.
See my response to Elizabeth re: scent.
The NASA photo stream on flickr is good for wasting a few hours 😉
Uhoh. I could be in major trouble checking that out.
Buly 1803 Eau Triple Tubereuse du Mexique
Beautiful! Old fashioned retro in a good way, very chic yet non pretentious
I really like some of the Buly scents and their aesthetic as well. Don’t remember the tuberose, but would love a bottle of the rose one or the Scottish Lichen.
I loved the rose as well but I don’t remember the other ones, I guess I need to go back to Bergdorf !!
Fortunately for me, when I tested them, they were out of stock! Though, it looks a little cheaper to order directly from Buly.
I’m wearing my very last bit of Bel Respiro edt.
Since I’m among friends here, I can say that I love sniffing myself.
Today, anyway.
Happy Wednesday, everyone.
🙂
Yes you can say it!
I tried to hang around this morning so I could see the moon, but had to prepare and leave for work this morning. So sad that I missed such a milestone of an event. My SOTD is Basil & Neroli by Jo Malone. This scent is quickly going to the top of my list as one of my favorite scents. Just something about it that I am addicted to. 🙂
yum, Basil & Neroli. I could never quite get that one to work for me, or the Lime Basil & Mandarin, then I was gifted a bar of the soap last month. Now I love it!
The Lime Basil & Mandarin has always been hard for me to wear alone. I always have to combine it with something. It smells fabulous on others, but not me.
you smell nice!
Thanks! 🙂
I’m wearing Chanel No5 Eau Premiere which is a genius scent. Never been a Chanel No5 fan and I just love how they made this so much more approachable.
Sorry to have missed the moon this morning! So beautiful.
You smell great!
I wore No. 5 edp last night. The dry down this morning is so nice.
I do love a morning drydown. I get a little disappointed if I don’t get yummy whiffs when I’m making my first cup of coffee. This morning it was Mona di Orio Musc, which made me wonder why I never wear it during the light of day. It’s strictly an evening/bedtime perfume for me. I mostly wear Chanel No 5 at bedtime as well, though not exclusively.
No 5 is best as an evening scent for me as well. 🙂
Eau Premiere is absolutely my favorite No 5 too. I love the EdT too, but Premiere is just soooooo good!
I prefer Eau Premiere or L’ eau to the original too.
I fully expected to see a picture of the moon up top, but my mind immediately saw a psychedelic taco. I work second shift today, so went back to bed after putting the kids on the bus. Question, does anyone here experience sleep paralysis? I do, and it’s pretty awful. I’ve looked it up, so I know what’s going on. Was just wondering if anyone had any tips for avoiding it. Anyway, sotd is going to Black Perfecto inspired by perfumelover67 and hajusuuri. ☺
I will do BP tomorrow since you are making miss it!
Hi twin! We will smell wonderful the whole day! 😉
Do you mean when you wake up and your limbs are asleep?
It’s when you are dreaming but you think you are awake, and you can’t move or speak. I’m a little unclear if in reality if you can’t move, but I think you can’t.
Oh that’s interesting, but sounds disconcerting. I wonder if they know during which part of the Sleep Cycle it happens
It’s a REM sleep issue.
https://web.stanford.edu/~dement/paralysis.html
I also find it difficult to take full breaths.
I’ve had that too. Thankfully it only lasts for a few seconds, though it feels longer.
That happens to me rarely and it is pretty scary since the dream is most of the team terryfing. At some point I realize I am not awake, try my best to wake up and I cannot. I am sure you do not move at all. Sometimes I have felt I am screaming for help, but I never scream in reality. Thanks God that does not happen often.
I just had a sleep paralysis episode last night and did scream out loud. I was trying to wake myself up with the scream, and it worked. It also terrified my SO.
Yes, so scary! I also try screaming, and am amazed when I realize I haven’t made a sound.
I have dreams where I am terrified and trying to scream or even speak and I can’t, which makes me even more scared.
I do not make s single sound either, according to my husband.
Yes! I’ve had that for years. And everytime I think I’m going to die. It’s more likely to happen during the day, like if I nap, and also sleeping on my back.
It’s really the main reason I try not to nap. Sometimes I’m just so tired though. Thank you for putting the link up.
I only nap if I’m super tired and only for an hour or less, and on the couch.
I think it has only happened to me when I’ve slept on my back out stomach. I’m mostly a side sleeper thank goodness. But I have had many instances of sleep paralysis over the years starting when I was 20.
That’s when it started for me, too. Working the night shift made it really bad. I also noticed that BC pills made it much worse which I discovered incidentally from stopping and restarting.
At least your screams is real and your SO can wake you up. That is of big help.
It always happens to me at night time. Fortunately, I do not make any noise that disturbs anyone.
Hmmm… I wonder if that’s what I’ve experienced in some naps. It’s like I’m trying to wake myself up but I can’t move. It doesn’t scare me, but it’s very weird. Like trying to swim through mud.
Yes, that’s the experience. It’s good you don’t find it scary.
Yeah, hearing others’ experiences makes me feel pretty lucky. It really only happens if I nap too long (I try to set a timer for naps.) . Definitely creepy.
YES, I have had sleep paralysis over the years, to the point where I used to “talk” myself down from panicking when it happened. Like Elisa, it happens when I sleep on my back.
That being said, I don’t have it near as often since having 3 kids, 1 dog, and 2 cats. I don’t sleep as deeply as I used to…I wake up more quickly than my younger years….
My tip to avoid it: See above! A noisy household has kept me sleep deprived for decades! 🙂
I also use to “talk” to myself down when that happens and I think I wake up faster than if I panick.
I will have to try and remember to not panic next time. Thanks!
The same for me, I have also experienced this and it started in college, but only happened if I slept in late or woke up and went back to sleep in the morning. One thing has helped me is to wake up at the same time everyday, and if I do nap I set an alarm so I don’t sleep for along time. Hope this helps
Yes, thank you. Setting a nap alarm is a good idea.
Anne Pliska today for resinous orange goodness. It’s great for Winter – cozy, but the orange keeps me alert.
That’s one I must try, then. I really love scents with orange, but haven’t ever sniffed this one.
Yum- you smell great!
The Super Blue Blood Moon was cool, but very eerie. I guess I expected it to be more reddish, but it was almost blue-black. I’m just glad that our cloudy weather dissipated for long enough to give us an unobstructed view here.
SOTD is the divine Mirabella from DSH, my perfect plummy chypre. It seems the right choice as cold weather moves back into the region. I keep getting the most wonderful wafts of myself as I sit here at my desk. Happy Hump Day, everyone!
I tried to talk myself into getting up for it, but didn’t manage it. Glad you were able to see it!
SotD = Geisha Vanilla Hinoki perfume oil.
Elisa P’s sotd reminded me to get out my sample vial of this beauty. In warm weather I get a hint of citronella (which I like) from the hinoki/cypress, but in winter there is a lavender note (which I adore).
In February I may try to wear one scent for a week (or more). Can’t decide if I will do one scent completely monogamously, or wear the same scent daily along with whatever else appeals.
I was thinking that is a good idea as well – really test one scent out over a few days
Great minds think alike! 🙂
My perception of a scent can really change because of the scents I wore the day before. Staying true to one scent for a few days could be an interesting exercise for the nose and mind, and my self-control, too.
Yes, very true!
I also get a hint of lavender from it. It really is delivered delightful. I should wear it more than I do. I crave it most in the Fall.
My husband got me up at 5:30am PST to see the moon, it was a gorgeous dark red disk. So happy I got to see it! I am wearing Misia edt for the last day of Chanuary. Then I need to write up my list of Iris choices for February!
waiting with bated breath for your iris list! 😀
Oh nice — good for your husband!
Going through perfume to see what I may need to swap or sell…I thinned the herd somewhat last year and it felt good so I am trying to do more this year.
Today I’m in Lolita Lempicka Minuit. It is nice but probably will rehome. I think I bought this one blind. Also trying not to buy blind FBs.
Oh, and you are reminding me I need to schedule the splitmeet.
Yes, looking forward to it!!!
I bought that one blind too and didn’t love it. The opening was weird, the drydown was a little better. But I like looking at the pretty bottle. I did a big cull with the freebiemeet, but have more for the swapmeet as well.
I am wearing Like This today – it was a chilly morning, and it seemed like a perfect choice. It was cloudy, so there was no chance of seeing the moon here.
I hope everyone has a great day!
Like This is so cozy and “feels” warm to me….It’s a winner!
Yum!
I’m in Perfect Veil by DSH Perfumes.
Musk, vanilla and citrus create a comforting hum for my 1st day back in the office post surgery.
Glad you are feeling well enough to go back to work. Soon it will be Busy Season fore I assume. Hope everything went well with your surgery.
I hope that your first day back at work was an easy one.
Humpday! Blood Moon Day!
1) SOTD: Rive d’Ambre (Generous samples from Nordstrom’s). Citrusy/minty amber. Very refreshing to wear and a great choice for spring- when you want something with citrus and herbs BUT still want the warmth of amber due to chilly mornings and nights. HOWEVER, this needs to be in the mainstream collection, like Grey Vetiver, because it’s expensive af.
2) Speaking of managing money, right now Zullily is having a sale on big ole bottles of cologne/perfume right now- up to 8 ounces! Hermes d’Oranger Vert is on special right now for $75 USD for 6.7 ounces. That should see you for spring and summer- for a couple of years! 🙂
3) My last post surgical follow up is this afternoon, and i am thrilled. Hormonal changes due to the thyroid surgery and fibroid removal has result in some cystic acne but that is nothing that a little adalpalene can’t take care off. Other than that, I am feeling so much better – exercise is easier, yoga is easier and i am not in a constant ‘fog’. Am feeling VERY satisfied indeed.
Yea for healing!! You go!!!
Good to hear about your recovery!
Continued wellness to you!!
Yay, so nice to hear that!
Glad to hear you are feeling better!
Today I am wearing a very small spray of Amouage Opus VIII. (Not supposed to have any perfume on, since I’m going to Pilates in a couple of hours.) I love this scent, it’s just so complex and varying. Today I’m picking up not just the very obvious white florals but something quite sweet and almost minty, which may be the bay leaf, and also nice benzoin. I missed the moon–not a morning person and no good viewing place where I live, either. A friend was up early and went to the top of a parking garage where she works and said it was amazing and a very dark red, and huge.
I had no idea this moon thing was happening. It’s totally overcast here, though, so I wonder if it was visible? Harumph.
Good morning, all. Our weather is dealing us extremes at the moment. We’ve lurched from brilliant, blinding, burning sun to gale-force winds and rain. I like the storm better, but everyone thinks I’m perverse, and perhaps I am.
The dear man came home last night, and the first thing he said when he hugged me was, “You smell nice. It’s part of home, the way you smell.“ I think I know what he meant, though the remark seems more applicable to a signature-scent person. However, the comment was loving, and he is home, so all is well. He has organised his mother’s funeral and taken care of a lot of administrative stuff for her estate, and we will drive down on Saturday for the service and back on Sunday. I was surprised he came back between her death and the funeral, because I could have flown down, but he just said he wanted to be home. I saw him having an intense conversation with Eric and the Stripies….I think he wanted company and comfort.
I wondered about wearing 31 RC again today, especially since the dear man liked it so much last night, but I’m feeling flighty and silly today. I chose No 22 instead, for that big rush of sparkles in the opening and the girly, but not giggly, heart. The dry down is beautiful, warm and woody and complex, so this will do very nicely today as one of the smells of home.
Thank you all so much for the words of congratulation yesterday. As often happens, I got so busy at work that I couldn’t get back to NST until our evening, by which time all sensible people in TOH would be asleep. I nearly fell off my chair when they told me what the salary top-up would be. I was horrified, and the HR rep said I was the only person in employment history ever to negotiate downwards! I ended up asking for an extra week of leave and less money. The school’s accountant lit up like a birthday cake at the thought of sparing the budget a little, so she’s pleased with my appointment. Now I have to perform.
Better go. Three wailing voices outside the bedroom door are telling me that they HUNGRY and that it is very tough to be a kitten in this household. I have a sneaking feeling I forgot to thaw their meat last night, so there may well be complaints to the Feline Union…. be well, all.
This is a difficult time for your husband, and for you by proxy. I will be thinking of you both. And congratulations on the new job!
I am thinking of both of you. I imagine it’s a wonderful relief formyour husband to be home with you.
Hi Waterdragon. Please give my good wishes to Richard. Whanganui will seem very different without your mother in law, I suspect.
Thinking of you both during this period of adjustment. I love what he said about associating your scentedness with “home”. So sweet.
I didn’t see your job news till last, so a belated congratulations, and now I see the news about Richard’s mother. Please pass on my good wishes. What a lovely comment about your perfume!
Will have to backtrack to see the news of your appointment- but congratulations! Hope your husband finds the comfort he is seeking…how can he not with a sweet-smelling wife and fluffy kittens!
Sending warm thoughts your way on that difficult time for your family.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your husbands mother. Peace to your family.
I’m sorry for your husband’s (and your) loss. But a very hearty congratulations for your promotion!
I haven’t seen your posts in a long time! I’m thrilled to see them again 🙂
My condolences on the loss of your MIL, and congratulations on the promotion. I also have requested less money and more leave in the past, the time was worth more to me.
My sympathies and condolences to you and your dear man. I’m fumbling around for more words to say and having absolutely nothing come to mind. Both of you are in my thoughts.
I am wearing something lovely from an unmarked Sephora sample. It is very soft and very lovely, slightly spicy.
Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day here in Canada, so I urge all the Canadians here to text a lot (Bell will donate 5 cents for every text to Mental Health), share the hashtag and the Facebook picture frame. And PLEASE, if you are suffering from mental health issues, TALK to someone. Remove the stigma. Suicide is never the answer. Sadly, one of our graduates committed suicide yesterday at 17 years old in the park across from the school. One of our staff found him. Our school is in a horrible state, and I can’t even imagine what his family is going through. Please, Let’s Talk.
Oh, what a nightmare. I can only imagine how hard that must be for your school and your community. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
That is so so sad. I am really sorry.
yes to Let’s Talk! There is strength in connection.
I’m so sorry to hear of your school’s loss and the tragic end to that young student’s life.
In the US the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-8255.
My heart breaks. I’m so sorry for you, the family, and your school community.
Terrible stigma about mental illness in the Western world, even amongst health care professionals, who KNOW better. Ticks me off to no end! I don’t think the pressures of social media are helping the younger generation, either. I wouldn’t want to be 17 in todays world.
Oh how heartbreaking and tragic. So sorry for everyone there.
I’m so sorry! That is awful and tragic.
I do like the let’s talk campaign, it’s a great idea – as Deva says, there is a stigma and sadly good mental health is not covered by health care the same way physical health is
That is absolutely tragic. I have a seventeen year old and cannot even imagine….
My heart breaks for the family and school.
So sad and unfortunate. And agree that stigma makes it difficult for people to seek help. Wishing for healing for your school and all involved.
Oh dear. Adding my sympathies, that’s just hard to even process.
What a tragic loss, I am so sorry.
Oh geez. How very sad. My deepest sympathies.
I MISSED THE MOON. I thought it was tonight, not this morning. I am very, very mopey.
To make myself feel better, I’ve given myself three hefty sprays of Lonesome Rider. The boyfriend says, “Can you maybe wear a little bit less of that next time?” NO. (But I’ll put it on outside the house.)
You missed the moon, but you smell fantastic!
I thought it was tonight too.????
Two boasty updates:
(1) Our highs are going to be in the 70s all week. Life is so good. (Except I’m awfully hot in my cashmere sweater and long, thick socks.)
(2) I found a cookie! It is very, very good.
You go girl! Spray yourself after you leave for work, but never surrender your right to reek havoc!
Good morning!
So the other day I was reading a story in National Geographic’s seasonal “Traveler” magazine on the one remaining large jasmine farm in Grasse. The journalist mentions that jasmine essence from Grasse is only used in the most high-end perfumes because it is so costly. My husband asked me about the fragrance differences between the scent of jasmine from Grasse and the jasmine sourced from Morocco, India, etc. Of course, I don’t have a clue what are the scent distinctions–but felt very righteous about it being impossible to say objectively that a flower grown in France smells “better” than a flower grown in Egypt. It might smell different, it might be more rare (and dear), but who is to say that it has a nicer or more interesting scent!
Which got me thinking about why I felt so militantly anti-snobby about jasmine from Grasse. And I realized it is because of you all. Oh sure, we tilt towards niche and indie–but what is so great about all of you is your generally shared belief that scent is as the scent is perceived. No hierarchy, no set rules, no moral superiority for the purchase of certain houses or brands. We find our love for a scent where we find it.
I once had a friend who love the smell of gasoline. She’d inhale deeply when we were at gas stations. Never understood it, but always sort of admired it.
Just my two cents. As for SOTD, I’ve been messing around with light pretties… a little Miu Miu l’eau Bleue here, a little Eau de Pamplemousse Rose there, and a quick spray of ELDO’s Yes I Do across the clavicle. Not laying so much as being undecided!
I identify with your friend! Not pure gasoline, but one of the greatest scents in my life has been my parents’ lawnmower shed, which was a very intense gas-mixed-with-old-cut-grass smell. I was so sad when they finally tore that old thing down.
Lawnmower smell. That is a good one!
Awhile back I did some sniffing at Enfleurage in Manhattan and got to smell jasmine from different regions. Though, even within regions, I assume there are different varieties. My favorite of the ones there was an Indian sambac.
But, yes to your point of anti-snobbery.
When I was new to perfume I was drawn to NST because of the anti-snobbery. I remember being really turned off a Facebook perfume group when I posted SSS Equestrian as my SOTD and someone commented that they weren’t interested in SSS because of the packaging. I thought it was sad to write off an entire indie house because the bottles aren’t fancy. We all know better!!
No kidding? I really liked SSS packaging- beautiful and simple. I agree about the anti-snobbery here at NST- where else could I go to rave about my $10 bottle of Queen (which I first heard about here)?!
Yeah, their loss.
I do pay attention to the packaging but more in terms of attention to details: if the expensive perfume is placed in a cheap looking bottle with skewed label, I start questioning on what else the brand was skimping. But all that doesn’t apply to SSS: I always thought Laurie’s packaging was impeccable.
It is beautiful. But compared to some of the niche bottles I guess it’s too simple.
I lurked here awhile until I was confident that no one would be mean to me or my designer perfumes. This place is anti snob all the way. I’ve never felt anything less than kindness here.
Yeah! So happy you are here 🙂 .
Happy to be here!
Really? That is so sad and stupid.
I am glad it does not happen here (and yes that’s also reason why I ‘stayed’ here. On some forums people are really vile and snobby…
(Also, I cannot stand folks bragging about wearing a ‘panty dropper’ and erhm ‘beast mode fragrances’ whatever that may be, it just sounds like 14 year olds talking….haha)
I am still kind of a noob and I dont have or know that many fragrances, but I am here to listen and learn and share. No matter the brand, price, bottle or colour of the juice 😉
Amen on the “beast mode”. I can’t stand that! I don’t really like having to hold my breath in elevators! And the other type, that’s just a little crass for me, my momma was quite proper! I’m just going to proudly say that one of my top 5 perfumes is SJP Covet, and I bought it for maybe $10 at Marshalls!
Ah SJP! I have not seen that brand in stores here in the Netherlands 🙁 but with a price like that a blind buy (online) will not hurt right? 😉
Haha.
Is “beast mode” a type of perfume or way of applying it?
Marshawn Lynch is a local boy, so beast mode has been part of Oakland lingo for a long time!
Beast mode means nuclear sillage.
Thanks for sharing this 🙂 I agree with your sentiment.
I used to LOVE the scent of gasoline and dry erase markers and rubber cement as a child. Then I learned that all those things are rotting my brain, and now I “hate” them. That’s in quotation marks because I still secretly love them, but I behave the way I do around scents I hate (recoil and try to stop smelling them immediately).
I wish I saw the eclipse! I set a 4 am alarm, but *needed* more sleep in the moment. Today’s reach into the sample cup yielded the last of my jasmine et cigarette sample. Which might be a little raunchier then last time I tried it. Oh well, still delightful.
You smell good, My jasmin et cigarette sample is almost gone as well….I like it a lot but I already have 3 other jasmine scents in fb to fulfill my jasmine cravings. So i dont think I need another one, but would not mind if a bottle suddenly fell into my lap haha 🙂
Delightful, indeed!
I really need to try this one, mostly because I’d like to know how similar jasmine and cigarette smells to jasmine and angelique (which is pretty cigarettey to my nose).
I have tried Jasmin et Cigarette, and thankfully do NOT get any cigarette or ashes. I do get a hint of tobacco and a rather indolic jasmine. YMMV, of course.
That sounds lovely and worth a try 🙂
Saw that amazing moon on my way to spin class this morning.
Wore Orris & Sandalwood yesterday. It lasted wonderfully on my skin, I hadn’t worn it in ages and really enjoyed it. I’m glad that I’m doing houses like this.
Myrrh & Tonka today
almond milk flat white
Love both of those scents! Looking forward to Orris & Sandalwood as part of my lineup.
Dzing! for a crazy day at work. I thought you didn’t really like Carven Robin, or am I mistaken?
Oh no, I think it’s very pretty. It’s not really me but I think it’s a great perfume. And surprised I don’t see it mentioned here more often!
I now realise it was Victoria who didn´t like it. Sorry!
Aha, I will have to go read her review!
Wearing Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit from a sample which has settled into a cinnamon vanilla cookie scent. I don’t wear any gourmands, so this is very different for me. I think I’ll sample some gourmands the next time I head to a perfume counter. Any suggestions? Maybe something a little less foody… I think I’d rather eat a cookie than smell like one. 🙂
Patty over at Perfume Posse has a review of this one today. My favorite gourmand is Casmir. I think Angel Muse is a good one too.
Funny!…I’ll check it out!
I loved Casmir when I first tried it but it’s been years. I recently commented here that Casmir was the first fragrance I tried that made me realize that perfume is a good way to capture a mood. I will have to seek it and Angel Muse out. Thanks for the rec!
Have you tried the Burberry Brit? It smells like a slightly green vanilla with sugared almonds and citrus to me.
I have BB Rhythm for Her but have not tried the the original. I will check check it out, thanks!
I’ve just discovered that yesterday was the luckiest day of the year for Leos ( some of you living in Wednesday still have a chance) so I’m trying to put a retrospective positive spin on the day. A lot of perfume was on a clearance table and VC&A gardenia petale was half price which tempted me . I sprayed CK Reveal …that was not lucky, just strange and disturbing. Yesterday we got to 34 but today the rain is thundering down (obscuring the lunar eclipse…not lucky) and I have to drive Alex to Invercargill to see the surgeon again . He can now walk down the hall without crutches…first time since September. I am going to wear Black Cashmere in honour of Waterdragon’s promotion and NST friendships.
Best to your H and his continued recovery, and congrats on his milestone! I love the deep drydown of Gardenia Petale on textiles, but don’t always love wearing it. Maybe I should use it as a room & linens spray…
Good to hear that Alex is making progress. Gald you survived the heat, I’m looking forward to talking to my mother tonight to see hoe she fared. How did your choice of perfume survive?
Oh, happy to hear your husband is self-propelled! Great achievement! Celebration is surely in order????
Ooh we better get to using that luck today!
Glad to hear about Alex’s progress. It’s been a long haul. Best wishes for continued progress!
Excellent news about Alex! I have been pondering Gardenia Petale, but I think I already have all the gardenia I want.
Excellent news about Alex and his recovery milestone!
I wearing Dryad today!
I dont regret buying a bottle it is such a no brainer and it never disappoints.
I could not decide this morning on what perfume I was in the mood for. When that happens most of the time I i grab Dryad or Eau des Merveilles 🙂
I had a long strategic workshop/brainstorm, it was good but I am a bit tired right now.
Lots of rain and grey skies again, sigh… it is hard to stay energetic, this winter seems extra dreary 🙁
EdM is no-brainer for me too. Haven’t smelled Dryad, but I bet you smell wonderful. Our winter has been dreary too, but the days are getting longer!
I missed the moon because I forgot all about it, but it was cloudy so even if I had remembered, I still would have missed it, which makes me feel better for some odd reason.
SOTD is T42 and it’s a smoke bomb on me this morning. I don’t remember it being so loud, but it’s been quite a while since I’ve worn it and never in cold temperatures that I can think of, so maybe that’s it?
I love the photo even though it’s enhanced. I love space, but despair because my poor brain doesn’t know enough about it. It does set my imagination on fire and if I ever rode a rocket to outer space and couldn’t get home, I would be perfectly ok with that. I would happily bob around in that huge sea of the unknown until I go belly up. Not a bad ending. ????
I just reminded myself of this great tune from one of my favorite albums!
https://youtu.be/g-BGYvsI4YE
Funny that you posted this. I love Meshell Ndegeocello but haven’t listened to her albums in years, and just yesterday had one of her songs in my head.
Your post again reminds me of the documentary on smell (Netflix,) The Empire of Scent. The Canadian astronaut who’s famous for singing the Ground Control to Major Tom song described the scent of outer space. I don’t know what I was expecting him to say, but I was stunned when he said it smelled like a freshly fired-off gun (or something to that effect.)
In googling him, I ran across this article in which he and his physician describe the physical challenges of being back on earth after being in orbit: http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/astronaut-chris-hadfield-savours-fresh-air-of-earth-1.1304791
“Returning to Earth” is the title of a great book by my favorite author, Jim Harrison. I think it’s, literally and figuratively, a hard task for us humanfolk.
I love Jim Harrison’s writing.
Just requested a copy of Returning to Earth from my city library. 🙂
Was thinking of you this AM. I think (!!) it was you who turned me on to instant pancake mixes and the single serving pancake. I’ve been making myself a quick pancake for breakfast, adding chia seeds and frozen blueberries. Happy morning.
Continuing on this random theme… T42 does not work for me… too much pipe tobacco. Maybe if it had been called “Sunday paper and a pipe” or some such, I would have been more open to it.
And, please don’t go belly up in outer space.
Do say more about this single serving pancake idea! Sometimes I have a pancake craving, but if I follow the instructions on the box, I end up with enough for a family of four.
My husband makes amazing buttermilk pancakes from scratch, usually making the batter at least 24 hours in advance, so I have always stayed away from the instant pancake mixes. Silly me! So pretty much every brand I have purchased has worked just fine: Birch Benders, 365 (Whole Foods), Arrowhead Mills, even Trader Joe’s has an instant pancake mix that is totally edible. I use a little less than 1/4 cup of the mix –I just estimate–throw in the chia seeds, add water and stir gingerly (don’t whip it!) until I get the right consistency, throw in the blues, and voila. Oh yah. Don’t forget to fry it in a pan. I look for instant mixes where no egg is needed (I don’t fancy divvying up an egg for the reduced recipe!). The 365 Whole Foods mix I used this AM says eggs are optional– so I did not add one and the pancake was perfect. Okay, maybe not as perfect as my husband’s, but it had many other advantages! 😉
Thanks for the tip! Sounds perfect…at least until I find myself a man who will make me buttermilk pancakes from scratch 😉
Pancakes are the bomb! I follow this channel on YouTube and she recently had a healthy pancake recipe using almond flour you might like. She annoys me to no end with her speech inflections, but has good info to share. https://youtu.be/9eOkZXWgel8
Oops! I lied! The almond flour was for a different recipe, but you get the idea. I’m going to look for this pancake mix myself. I love Bobs❤️
I buy the Kodiak pancake mix at Costco, it is whole wheat with extra protein, just add water. You can calibrate it to make as many or as few as you want, it’s just 1:1 mix & water.
I have never been in a Costco. Pretty sure I’m missing out….????
It depends. Used to be we couldn’t get out of Costco alive without somehow obtaining masses of camping gear. No matter how we would avoid the camping equipment aisle, that stuff would just appear in our cart as if by magic. And the books, and the liquor, and the cheese, and the . . . .sigh. We just could not afford to go any more. So now we go only once a year for our big summer party. We end up spending well over a $1k, which always brings out the membership folks (there must be a bell for large purchases at the register) who want us to upgrade our membership for being such loyal shoppers!
You should try to see if you can get to one and ask for a guest pass. You may end up paying a little more but you never know!
You smell great!
Thank you????
I’ve got days worth of NST to catch up on! Meanwhile, I’m going to enjoy a day in Vol de Nuit edt.
Enjoying the day is a good plan 🙂
Beautiful sunny day (too warm for this time of the year, we need it colder and some rain, please), and I’m wearing beautiful Rose d’Amor from Parfums de Rosine before diving in into the Month of Irises project I’m doing for February.
Everybody, stay warm/cool – it’s Wednesday already and January is almost over.
SSS Winter Woods. Warm and cozy!
Ahhh, lovely. I’m deeply disappointed that I didn’t buy more of this in early January as I had intended.
You smell great! I just keep enjoying my a sample…was too late for a bigger decant or whole bottle.
Sss did not offer overseas shipping and the decant seller I got my sample from did not have it in stock anymore…oh well luckily there are so many more fragrances in the world to test and love. 🙂
You smell wonderful!
I was inspired to wear Love, Chloe after seeing the bottle of the new Chloe release that Robin posted. I love the bitterness at the heart of this one.
It always amazes me how long dab mini bottles can last. I have a 7.5 ml mini of Love, Chloe that I’ve worn dozens and dozens of times in the 7 years since I bought it. Just another argument for small bottles! I’ll take mine in a 15 ml spray, please!
I love minis.
Me too. I started collecting them before I was even really interested in perfume, so I have a lot of mainstream “gift with purchase” and Sephora bonus bottles, but they are so darn cute that I’m keeping them even if I never wear them!
I started saving my empty minis..I plan to turn them into Christmas tree ornaments one of these days.
What a great idea!
Will you post pictures when you do this? Please?
Will do!
oh my heart, that’s a genius way to upcycle empties. 😀
Excellent!
I wish Love, Chloe had caught on!
Natori today, which I used to wear more frequently and love the plumminess. It used to last forever on me but it seems to fade much quicker now.
Need to get out in the cold now that I’ve finished knitting another scarf. This one is for me or I may gift it away… Amazing how much faster it goes with chunkier yarn and bigger needles. ????????????????
Yay for a newly knitted FO (finished object)! 🙂
I hope your scarf smells of Natori (or another lovely scent) very soon.
SotD is Art Meets Art’s Like a Virgin LE. This is a lovely orange blossom that actually works for me. Seville a l’aube goes all corn tortillas on my skin. It reminds me a little bit of Dame’s Orange Blossom but more “buttery” if that makes any sense.
Today is the third day in a row madtownkid has been home sick. We headed into the pediatrician this morning and it’s not strep or the flu, so that’s good. Just a nasty bug that has overstayed it’s welcome.
We’re watching The Little Prince on Netflix this afternoon. Such a good movie. There’s only so much spongebob a person can take.
I hope your kid gets better soon!
I need to watch that movie: as a child, I liked to listen it on the vinyl I had.
Feel better madtownkid! And thank goodness for options other than Spongebob!
Good to hear that madtownkid doesn’t have the dreaded strep throat.
I’m wearing my winter rhubarb today, Aedes de Venustas (summer rhubarb is Hermes Rhubarb Ecarlate) and mourning what may be the end of ski season this year. Tomorrow should be okay, but then it is projected to be unseasonably warm here through mid-February. Some years it’s a gamble buying a season ticket. On the other hand, if it’s warm and dry here, I can get an early start on hiking. Warm and wet means I read a lot more books…
Sorry about the loss of skiing, but I’m afraid I’d be thrilled with a nice warm February!
Hermes Hiris is my SOTD
ooh, you smell wonderful in Hiris.
Started off the day by sampling Scandalwood from Heretic Parfums but post shower I am in the glory that is Iris Ganache
“Scandalwood” is a great name for a perfume! What’s it like?
Lots of wood and a little bit of rose. Nice enough but not on my buy list. Iris Ganache is one of my all-time faves so I’m happier in this
I went through more baggies full of samples last night and pulled out lots that are half full with the intention of working on using those up and wearing forgotten perfumes. I also wanted something easy to like, cozy and comforting today after yesterday’s Superstitious overspraying headache.
So I’m wearing Cafe by Neil Morris, a perfumer I never see mentioned anymore but was very popular in the heyday of MakeupAlley. It has notes of coffee, green tea, chocolate, pumpkin, and vanilla cream. It shares some similarities with Cuir Beluga in the dry down.
Wow, had forgotten all about Neil Morris — don’t even know if he’s still making perfumes.
He does!
SOTD = Tauer Dark Passage
OMG. I now have a stockpile of this (4 travel sprays, the only size / format it came in). If youu have an unloved one, i would be willing to swap for it! In order of prominence to my nose, I get patchouli, cacao, slightly bitter woodiness (birch tar vs birch listed in Fragrantica), tobacco.
In case I don’t get around to thanking everyone for the hajusuuri shout out above, THANK YOU ????
I have 3 calls tonight – ugh!
Today, I wasted time trying to justify actions I did that someone misrepresented. I have no qualms that what I did was right considering the directives came from senior leaders, the directives make sense (or I would have challenged them at the time the directives were issued) and i have email proof of the sequence of events. This was a time suck for time I don’t have
Anyway, I am looking forward to joining Undina and gang in making February Iris Month!
I woke up early enough this morning that I could have gone outside to see the Super Blue Blood Moon. But the bed was nice and cozy, and I was snuggling with a cat. So I went back to sleep. From the pictures I saw, folks out West had a much better view of the moon than people on the Eastern Seaboard.
SOTD = same as yesterday. I liked the deep drydown so much, I figured that spraying Encens Flamboyant again made sense.
