Monday scent of the day 1/29

Posted by Robin on 29 January 2018 287 Comments

Hey, it is indeed Monday again. Plus, Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing L'Artisan Parfumeur Jacinthe des Bois.

Reminder: on 2/2, we're doing Groundhog Day...assemble some winter- and spring-appropriate samples in a bowl, pick one at random, then tell us if spring will be early or late this year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Dreary rainy day here in Virginia- I’m wearing the gorgeous VP Rozy and it’s cheering me up nicely. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Looks like we’re having about the same weather, and possibly expecting snow tomorrow. I may do spring fragrances all week.

Yes, I’ve gotten some of that in packages. I don’t like it because it’s stiff, since there are linear channels that, rather than independent cells.

I also read that the original bubble wrap company will be phasing out pop-able bubble wrap. ???? I’m doing a bit of hoarding.

You know who appreciates bubble wrap? MY CAT.

I am wearing Paestum Rose today. And so looking forward to the Friday project – what a great idea! I would basically be for as many fortune-telling-by-random-sample projects as we can think of. Anybody else ever try to figure out how their day’s going to be by hitting random shuffle on their music? I just did this and got Sufjan Stevens’ “Detroit, lift up your weary head!” which feels pretty appropriate for this Monday.

I wanted a licorice or anise scent today, so I sprayed Etro Anice first. Lovely straight up anise, but gone in an hour or two. So currently I am wearing Mancera Aoud Black Candy. Not much licorice here (I mostly get sweet aoud), but still nice.

It was a raspberry rose with iris — sweet and sparkling and fun, although I liked the Balkis Light better because it was a little less sweet. She had a lot of what I considered extremely well made but light hearted scents — Eau d’Ete, Eau Exotique, Eau de Chateau, Kiss Me Tender, Balle de Match, Eau a la Folie, etc.

Now everything she does strikes me as serious. Maybe it’s just me.

Wearing AC Santal Carmin today from a sample. I wonder if i’d like it better on a vanilla or musk base.

I am feeling a bit weary. Maybe it’s the mid-winter blues (a.k.a SAD). Looking for sun-drenched places to escape to, but that’s only going to be in april or early june. I wonder if I should get a light lamp of some sort.

I’ve been debating getting a sun lamp for years. The good ones seem like an investment, and spring arrives before my research ceases.

Are you able to get to a dry sauna? Sitting in 90+ degrees for 10 or 15 minutes really helps me!

My bf has really good health insurance and he was able to get a sun lamp covered by his insurance. Maybe if you’re lucky that’s something you could look into?

It is not quiiite the same as being in a lovely glasshouse, but it’s sunny outside today and I am considering popping into the gigantic mall nearby – its top floor is white and light-filled in good weather :-)

It is very floral when it goes on, and quite sweet. Just when you might think it too sweet, you notice the tobacco note. In the drydown, I’m getting more patchouli and sandalwood. It shows a definite progression of notes, and is very interesting because of the changes.

I’m wearing Néroli Outrenoir today. Such a fan of this one. The neroli/&other citruses and strong tea note work so well together. And it lasts all day! And, if you drop I glass decant on your bathroom tiled floor it will last all month! Glad to have a small backup.

You smell absolutely heavenly! I truly adore NO. When it originally was released, it came in the dreaded bulb atomizer format which really made decanting impossible. I wonder if it is available in the new format yet?

Spending the morning in vintage Bal because I love it so. Managed to talk a seller down on a partially filled bottle of Deneuve. There were only about 15 ml left in the bottle and it wasn’t exactly worth $40. So $20 and free shipping and I was sold. Since Deneuve doesn’t really jive with cold temps, I will wear it when the weather gets warm and stays warm. After my shower, I will get my Jubilation 25 out and wear that or maybe Beloved will work better.

I can’t speak to Jub25, but I am a practically connoisseur (ahem, addict) of rose-violet scents, so I can compare Beloved to others.

Beloved is a powdery, rose-violet. It is less sweet (less ambery?) than Guet-Apens/Attrape Coeur. Lipstick Rose is also powdery, but it is more wispy than Beloved, which feels full-bodied in an intentionally vintage sort of way. SSS Nostalgie is also a vintage-inspired rose, but has a lot more quirky pretty/ugly aspects to it, mostly from a hit of Narcissus in the top notes. However, both have a buzz like aldehydes in the top notes.

I would sample it (them) first. Especially Jubilation since it’s a bit polarizing with its sweaty/BO thing.
Beloved is easier to like IMO if you like sweet, vintage-y florals. Though I’ve never registered the rose-violet accord. The chamomile is definitely prominent to me, and the immortele, and maybe ylang? It smells more golden-hued to me. But YMMV, of course.

I’m wearing Bruno Fazzilari’s Unsettled today, I absolutely love it, but it doesn’t project or last long enough to justify putting on my Full Bottle list, as a 30ml bottle is so expensive, and a little does not (in my case) go a long way, I can’t justify the price. It is a real little gem tho, very unusual, I never got to smell Colony or Anais fizz, and have realised I love pineapple in perfume!

SotM = Amouge Journey Woman from a sample

I quite like this one. It smells like hairspray from the 1980’s. Maybe it was called Rave? Hard to remember, there were a lot of hairspray fumes back then.

A sample labeled “Prada by Prada” is on deck for later. Sniffing from the vial makes me think it was expensive back in the day.

Today I am wearing Sillage blanc, by Dusita. From a sample.
    Loads of oakmoss and galbanum.
Yes it probably has been said/written about this fragrance at least hundred times, but it reminds me of Bandit. The drydown of Bandit is better imo. But i prefer the first hours of Sillage blanc to the opening stage of Bandit. Its more elegant and I think its perfectly fine for office. Well I wore it to office and had no complaints. Haha. Sillage is modest.

Oh and yesterday I wore a few dabs of Mitsouko. I have a very small cute mini in a small cardboard box. I dont know if its a vintage or not. But I get a lot of gorgeous musty oakmoss and after a few hours it turns into a lovely slightly salty amber on my skin. I loved it more than on previous wearings….its a scent that starts to grow on me.

Almost finishing off my sample of the cheerfully fruity Hendley Amora. Someone complimented me in this one Saturday night. That was nice ???? I does seem like a crowd pleaser. I’d consider a travel spray of this since it’s only 18 bucks. But, it’s a rarity for me to crave fruity, though I’m finding this one kind of addictive. I’ll wait and see if it’s just a fleeting crush.

Does it ever happen to you that you cannot smell it at all? I suspect that it’s Iso E Super (which I like and do not mind in perfumes) playing tricks on me from time to time. But when it doesn’t, it smells really good to me. And such a beautiful bottle!

That happens to me as well, I think the scent is gone and then I manage to catch a whiff in my hair or as I turn around. It just may be the Iso E Super, come to think of it.
I love smelling it on some of my favorite scarves days later.

I had a body cream in this scent. I’m not sure if it went off or it was just its natural way of smelling but I stopped using it because of that (I still have it half-full). What I want to say is that I recommend to buy this cream only in a B&M store (does Barney’s carry it?) to where you can return it if you try it and it’s spoiled.

Best of mornings to you, NST. Aotearoa-New Zealand is sweltering, simply, and if I could have wish granted at this very minute, it would be to take our excess heat and send it up to the Other Hemisphere so that we could all have a comfy temperature of about 22. I like my cool perfumes well enough, and Ninfeo Mio is a good one among them, but it’s not madly interesting. Just another cool smell for a hot day. In other words, I’m a bit bored, tired of one-garment dressing (did I really like that dress when I bought it?) and yearning to wear a deep, rich…something. Epic? 1270? Queen of the Night?

It’s not quite 6 a.m., and the temp is already 20. Titus has been bringing me his Peggy Sue to play fetch, and usually when I throw the peg, he absolutely hurtles after it, but this morning, he only strolled after it. Alexander hasn’t moved. He’s lying where the very edge of the breeze from the fan is playing on him. I wish I could join him for the rest of the day. Eric is pottering about in his own little Eric-world. Oh, and a little bit of news: today Eric is officially moves from being a kitten to being an adult cat. He’s now nine months old. The Stripies have one more week of kittenhood to go.

Well, it’s early, but I might as well head up to work. Last week I submitted an expression of interest in becoming Deputy Head of School. I will probably hear about that today, and the nice thing is, I’m completely OK with whichever way that goes. Be well, all.

It’s too hot here. I was out on the hill before sunrise and there was sea fig iver the harbour but heat on the hill and such an amazing scent…almost like green tea mixed with spearmint. Not from any single plant but just the whole mix. The dogs are dragging their tongues ( i learnt that dogs have a higher body temperature than humans so can overheat). Keep fresh! Maybe it’s cologne time? Chanel cologne time!

Remember last week wh e I was wrestling with the spray top & sprayer on my SL bottle? I was getting ready to use the pliers to pull the sprayer out of the top when Mr. A sauntered by and said “Why don’t you just put the whole thing IN the bottle and see if it comes loose?”. Which it immediately did. He had the good sense not to grow about his genius. ; -)

Terry de Gunzberg Rose Infernale, thanks to the generous Laura! I think this means…spring?

Speaking of smelly flowers, in addition to my many wonderfully smelly hyacinths, my paperwhites are going to bloom soon, and some of my gardenias look like they’ll open in the next week or so. No signs of life on my jasmine yet, BUT I did find tuberose stalks at the farmers’ market yesterday!!!! Ooooo I cannot wait for those to open. Yum yum. We also went to the forest to see if we could forage any greens (we decided we aren’t nearly competent or confident enough to eat things we found in a forest), and we found a mimosa grove, so I’ve now got a lovely and smelly bouquet of those in my bedroom :)

I’m curious: does the idea for this Friday calls for equal number of different types of perfumes (so chances would be 50/50, and one could play it with just 2 samples – that’s what I’ll probably do), or should it be somehow randomized proportion?

It would be equal, and doesn’t matter how many so long as it’s equal — at least, that is how I envisioned it. I would think Our Lady Donatella is watching and will know if you cheated…

They had a great article about Donatella in this past weekends WSJ magazine. The name is Versace’s 2020 vision.

Here is a quote from the article you can all appreciate:

“Donatella has been sober for 14 years now, although she says there’s one last vice she will never surrender “I have a glamour addiction to creams and hair products. I’ve got to have something, yes?””

I decided I needed a dose of spring today, so I went with Sylvaine Delacourte’s Florentina. It’s a perfect in-between seasons iris, because it tempers the cool rootiness of the iris and the vetiver with the warmth of carnation and benzoin.

Drinking Earl Grey, but wishing it were a double espresso right now….

I had a busy weekend, so I am taking care of myself by having a “sick” day to rest and rejuvinate before working the rest of the week. I’ll enjoy using the gym while it’s quieter during the day, and that’s my only plan other than cooking chicken in red curry sauce for dinner tonight. With the talk of Beloved above, I’m tempted to spray some this morning. Should bloom pretty magnificently at the gym!

Good morning everyone. After an unusually dreary cold month, we finally have sunshine and gorgeous blue sky today. I wish I could share it with everyone up north. I’m wearing Grandiflora Queen of the Night and loving it. I”m just relaxing after a somewhat stressful/somewhat fun visit from my mother up here this weekend. We visited the Oscar de la Renta dress exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts and went to The Barber of Seville at the opera yesterday, plus ate one dinner at some friends’ house and had one brunch out with other friends. Mom is unpredictable and got the shakes at the opera for awhile (just the crowd) but on the whole seemed to enjoy it.

Just popping in to say that I sampled Guerlain Lui, and could not believe my nose. To me, it smells like 1999 Guerlain Terracotta Voile d’Ete, that is, a carnation oriental. Has anyone else tried this one?

GRRRRR. I’d been pondering a sample of Lui for some time. Now I think I really must.

(I thought Voile d’Ete was wonderful, except I hated the way it shrank so abruptly. I mean, a perfume should either be loud or be soft — so I know how to dose it!)

I’m finding it a bit more leathery this evening, but still surprisingly warm and almost sweet. Very surprising for “Lui”! Keep in mind I’m only dabbing, it though. I really need to decant it into a sprayer to get the full effect, perhaps.

I did at the Guerlain spa late last year, but never tried the Terracotta you mentioned. Grain de musc blog gave this description “The red carnation that burns at the heart of L’Heure Bleue and Mitsouko lights up the sweet fumes of benzoin. As retro as the black Deco bottle it filched from Liu, with a contemporary, pared-down build.”

I tried the new Lui at the Guerlain shop at Epcot over the holidays. It was the one I went in intending to buy, based on the much-loved listed notes, but I walked out with Spiritueuse Double Vanille.

Lui did not remind me the ’99 Terracotta, which I owned and emptied, most unfortunately. On me, Lui was thinner and more generic-masculine than I expected, although the dry-down was lovely.

BTW, the 2017 Spiritueuse Double Vanille IS less boozy than the original, as some have reported. The lack of booze does not equal a lack of richness or depth however, and the current version’s dryness is very appealing.

Really enjoying my experimental combo of Keiko Mecheri White Petals and Skarlett. The spice of Skarlett really works with White Petals. The combo feels like a winter suitable white flower. Love it when perfume experiments work in unexpected ways.????

Moonlight Patchouli by Van Cleef & Arpels. The best blind buy I’ve ever made. Yesterday, my dearest friend who’s visiting from across the country said, “What are you wearing? That just smells like you!”

This was on the beach in L.A., where it was 84 degrees yesterday, thanks to the Santa Ana winds, where the suede and spice were wafting a good six hours after application. But Moonlight Patchouli rocks the cool weather too, where the rose and iris come to the fore.

You smell fab! I love Moonlight Patchouli. On my skin a sueded iris is the most prominent and that’s why I love it so much.

Oh those successful blind buys! They work just often enough to keep me doing it, but if I add up the fails….

Moonlight Patch is so great though, it makes up for all the others.

I just figured I would reach into the sample cup every day this week, and decide if any should be passed on to my pals–today is (I believe, semi-rubbed off name) Daim Blonde, and I think it would be good for anyone wanting a gentlepersonly suede feeling, though the scent has worn away, too.

Changing things up just a little with Samsara EdP this time. I was right… that bottle wanted some love, too. It smelled great during my workout. Time to line up a couple of other bottles for their turn in the spotlight.

I finished off a sample of Une Fleur de Cassie for a dose of beauty and comfort on a Monday. This morning I needed it especially because I overslept by 45 minutes! I hate having to jump out of bed like that.

Ugh, I hate having to rush out the door. Why can’t I oversleep when I don’t have to go anywhere?

But you got 45 extra minutes of sleep – which isn’t that bad on its own, right? :)

SOTD = Rania J. Ambre Loup

I love this even more every time I wear it! I officially got the last possible spritz of my decant and I am ready for my FB debut. Woody boozy incensy spicy tobacco-less tobacco.

Looking forward to reading everyone’s pick for today. For the Friday Challenge, I plan to do a coin flip and wear the sunshine or shadow perfume.

Since I planned to choose between two (irises) about which I think in terms of winter vs. summer, and there’s a chance that those will be coming from bottles, I was also planning to do the actual choosing with the help of a coin (or maybe I’ll ask Rusty to choose :) ).
