Thursday scent of the day 1/18

Posted by Robin on 18 January 2018 239 Comments

Narcisses americains

It's Almost-Friday, and it's Thesaurus Day, aka Peter Mark Roget's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with L'Occitane Vanille & Narcisse.

Reminder: 1/19 will be Vanilla Friday...wear a fragrance with vanilla.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Scent twin! I have a meeting at school and was running late, so I grabbed the first vanilla that I could think of! This is so pretty, and perfect for a meeting.

Comfort and warmth are exactly right. I hardly ever get to the bottom of a bottle but I drained my 15-mL and bought a 50-mL backup.

ST is one if those perfumes that you never get tired of, especially on those days when you need something easy, beautiful and comfy. I also got a BUB. Very much needed!

I also tried it last summer and it was lovely. However, I enjoy more the comfort it gives me in very cold days. But it is a perfume that can be worn all year round.

question- has anyone tried to order from SSS website? I read a lovely review of a scent on Chemist and wanted to order. I can see bottle size and price but cannot figure out how/where to check out.

Unfortunately, Laurie has closed the shop temporarily while looking for someone else to take it over, so there won’t be any more orders until that happens.

Her store is closed and she’s ending her business ???? I think her blog may list what she still has available and you can email to order whatever might be left. Though, with the news coming out last week, chances of getting some if the popular items are slimmer, I’m sure.

There’s a blog post update that she has to stop right now due to wrist issues but will fulfill those that have been paid for already. I haven’t been invoiced so have not paid. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she can fulfill later an item that was not on her available/no longer available list (To Dream).

SL Douce Amere: vanilla is not the star player, but a warm counterpoint to the bitter herbaceous notes. I’ve never seen a list of notes (lily? cedar? cinnamon? really?) that gives even the slightest idea of how this actually smells, but it’s spectacular, one of my top-five Lutenses.

Douce Amere! I haven’t smelled that for ages but was one of my first loves when I fell in love with the fragrance world. I think of it as cool herbal absinthe mixed with a deep vanilla. A really unique and beautiful fragrance.

I bought a Caron pressed powder about 5 (?) years ago from New London in NY. I am not sure if they still stock Caron.

yes, me too. New London does not stock them anymore though, thats how I found out the Caron boutique closed. I was able to get a hold of Diane at the boutique and she let me pick up her last powder in my shade. She is in fact closed and that is it for Caron in NYC. In the future she said you can find them on Amazon..
Good ol’Amazon shutting down one store at a time…hahaha

Late yesterday I put on Agonist Arctic Jade, which I can still get wafts of this morning. I usually like it a lot but found it rather spiky and too sharp yesterday, oddly enough. It does have an odd combination of notes and the fruity aspects were what bothered me last night. It’s got a lot of vanilla but also the fruit (raspberry?) and ylang ylang and they were kind of fighting it out for dominance. However when I woke up at 4 a.m. from a bad dream, the smell was divine and just pretty and calming. However as I prepare to go out and face my first day of classes this semester, I think I’ll wear something else for comfort, maybe Geisha Hinoki Vanilla, which I have in the little oil rollerball.

    Dior Addict

So proud of myself for participating this week…these projects definitely get me using up my samples.

This is so much better in the cold than when I first smelled in in Summer.

My husband likes, he said “powdery floral with a little gourmand to it” 🙂

Herve Gambs Hotel Particulier on the left wrist, Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera on the right wrist.
Hotel Particulier is a warm and creamy vanilla. I was pretty sure that it has patchouli, spices and maybe leather. Fragrantica agrees. But Herve Gambs lists only the following notes: rose, vanilla, tonka bean, amber, sandalwood. Weird. Nice scent anyway.
Vanhera surprised me today. I tried it twice before (briefly, I admit), and I remember it as a vamilla-centric fragrance with dark woods and spices. Today I hardly get vanilla from my sample – lots of aoud-like (kind of synthetic) woods and spices. I really liked this scent before, and now I am disappointed.

Yup, vanilla is one of the 68 notes. 😀

Woke up thinking of Ylang & Vanille, sigh. I think it was because of last night’s Oeillet Sauvage over the dry down of Vanille Insensee. Might try that combination again sometime.

Detoured off the vanilla trail today in my excitement to wear my latest treasure, Guerlain’s Les Parisiennes Collection Baiser de Russie (formerly known as Moscow/Moscou from the d/c Les Voyages Olfactivs collection). I sampled Moscow after Les Voyages had already been d/c, fell madly in love with it, and cursed daily the $500 price tag on bottles on eBay, so I was beyond thrilled when Guerlain announced its return under the Les Parisiennes line. I went in on a split, so it was a more affordable splurge.

I love this one because it adds the unusual (for Guerlain) facets of fir and a tart fruit (kind of rhubarby to me, although Guerlain’s official note is cranberry) to the typical Guerlinade base. The overall effect is lightly green, bright, and creamy. It’s light enough to wear nearly year round. Gorgeous juice!

I probably should have mentioned that the new version – Baiser de Russie – is $280 for 125 ml in the bee bottle. The previous release – as Moscou/Moscow – came in the rectangular 75 ml bottle, and those are the ones selling for $500 now on eBay. You can therefore see why I applied my perfumista logic to decide that a 3-way split of the bee bottle is actually a 40 ml, $93 bargain ????!

Doubling up today with SL Un Bois Vanille on one wrist, and AG Vanille Exquise on the other. The SL is definitely more woody and chewy and the Goutal is brighter with a bit of that play doh accord. If I had to pick I would go with the Lutens, but I prefer Vanille Insensee over them both.

Happy birthday Mr Roget! I reach for your book almost daily even though the glue holding it together has given up the ghost. In the strange and random world of Dunedin perfume stockists I came across a display of Fiele scents in a clothes shop yesterday: Viola, Cedrus and Boswellia. They were great! Earthy, multi-layered, interesting and nice smelling…and expensive! I see Kevin has reviewed this house from California but they were new to me. Kind of in the Olfactive Studio vibe. I also loved the bottles. Very tempting.
Wearing A la Nuit layered with Bois de Vanille this dark morning. Its very foggy here and yesterday while walking the paddocks were completely covered in a patchwork of small (saucer sized) spider webs…remarkable sight and all glistening . All the yarrow is in full flower now and the rowan trees are covered with berries. Also picked my first wild blackberry of the year.

    SOTD is E&J Nirvana Bourbon.

I stopped in to my local Dior shop yesterday (I am still bemused that I even *have* a local Dior shop here in the burbs) and got an updated rumor on what’s happening with their Collection Prive scents. The store manager told me that the line isn’t being discontinued, but is being revamped around April. Some current scents will be discontinued, some will be renamed, and some new scents will be added. The only scent whose fate she knew ‘for sure’ is Gris Montaigne, which she said would be renamed. So… take all that with as many grains of salt as you like 🙂

So I bought Grand Bal which I’ve been dithering about for years, and a BUB of Bois d’Argent, Just In Case. Donatella approves, I’m sure.

Two years ago, Bergdorf had on display what looked to be 9 mL travel spray sets of mixed Collection Prive perfumes (I think it was either a 4 or 5 pack). The one on display was not for sale but the SA told me they will be getting a shipment in a few weeks. I kept checking back and it is now two years later – poof. Not a peep about the fate of that format. Le sigh.

SOTD = Rising Phoenix Sicilian Vanilla 2011 attar

You know me and vanilla (and Iris and…)…whenever I get wind of something vanilla, I have to investigate, for science, of course.

    http://www.kafkaesqueblog.com/2017/12/09/rising-phoenix-perfumery-musk-rose-sicilian-vanilla-amber-oud-yeti-ambergris-attars/

This is non-sweet chewy vanilla tobacco “woud” (no Oud in the list of notes but my nose detected something woody oudy). Give it time to develop on skin and you will be rewarded.

Speaking of Oud, has anyone been to the Arabian Oud store at Times Square lately? I’ve only been there once but did not have time to give everything a good sniffing.

    Commuting Woes No. 405:
This was from yesterday. Two young college-aged looking couple of color walked into the train and found seats together. As they sat down, there was a sound of metal hitting against the seat. An older guy siting on the same row separated by the aisle thought he was being funny and said – that must be your 9 millimeter hitting the seat. OMG, if it truly was a gun, it would not have ended well. As it was, the joke went down like a lead balloon as the young guy just looked at the older guy with a puzzled look. I bet it was a harmless metal water bottle.

Wearing Prada Candy today. Been so lazy and gross all week, have been eating too much and not active enough. I am determined to get back on the wagon today.

I am at a time in my life between work and kid that I have no idea what day of the week it is. I think today is Monday, so I’m starting with a fresh slate. SOTD is my ever-loved Chanel Coco edp. Yesterday I wore vintage Vol de Nuit edt to shovel 8 inches of snow with my DH and daughter. VdN is the only fragrance I’ve ever smelled that smells like snow. Cheers!

I am wearing a dab of LouLou today
This was one of my first perfumes ever, and I havent worn/smelled it in decades (!). It sure brings back good memories!
Wow this is good stuff. I wore it in high school….and now I’d say it feels like the younger less polished sister of Poison.

I have some very good news, my mother is back home!!!!
Still a long way to go before she can move around independently, but so glad she can stay in her own bed/home again. 🙂

      Other news:

The January Scent Project sample set I ordered arrived last week.
Smolderose is very nice (and i am not even a huge rose fan).

I have a nasty cold. i have a runnyp nose and my throat hurts. I can hardly talk, only whisper faintly. But all is not lost, I can still smell perfume! 😉

We had a severe storm here today in the Netherlands. Lots of damage throughout the country: roofs were ripped from houses, trees fell down, trucks were blown away, therefore public transport and traffic were heavily disrupted and unfortunately two people died because of the storm. 🙁

Oddly enought the storm wasn’t that bad where I live, and the South West is usually rather windy. Did you see the clip with the Dixi being blown away? I hope no one was inside while that happened.

Glad to hear your mum is doing better, and even gladder that she doesn’t need that liver transplant after all.
She must be so glad to be in her own place again. Hospitals are necessary, but people do tend to do best in their own surroundings, esp when they are getting on.

          That Dixi 😮
Also, those sea containers in Rotterdam (?) toppling over, quite a scary sight.

Yes home is the best place to recover! The livertransplant is still her plan B (for when medication starts to fail…), but I hope its not necessary (such a major and risky surgery..).

It’s really, really major surgery, especially in someone no longer young.

I was amused by the Dixi, but scared by the two lorries toppling over. And the death in Enschede, which is near where my parents live, but fortunately he is well and safe.

I wore Lush Rose Jam body spray on my hike in the snow today, and received a lovely compliment from one of my companions, who thought it was a rose essential oil. After my shower, I’ll put on a dab of Mona di Orio Vanille for the project.

I am so enjoying vanilla week, dear fragrant friends! So cozy and comforting and full of love. I might go out on Vanille Galante tomorrow, which is vanilla-y, but not at all comforting or loving (to me). I’ve probably got literally a dozen choices for a last vanilla day. I might have even more vanillas than I have roses! Absurd. I had never realized this.

My SOTD is Tauer When We Cuddle, from a decant given to me by the amazing hajusuuri. I adore it, but I think I won’t be too sad about not having bought a bottle when it was briefly on sale at Luckyscent. 5 mL of this delicious perfume is plenty for me. I’ve got an olfactory hug, work is going pretty well, and I snagged a free lunch 🙂 Life is good today!

I’ve not heard of that L’Occitane, Robin. It sounds beautiful! I’ve never been to a L’Occitane, but we recently moved near one. What favorites do you all have from there?

I’m in a sample of Carta Moena today. Love at first sniff. Always soft, never grating… it reminds me of my great uncle’s barn, the smell of hay specifically. Very, very beautiful.

All of the almond line, but especially the Almond Supple Skin Oil, Almond Shower Oil, Almond Milk Concentrate, and Almond Velvet Body Serum. The scent is very beautiful and delicate, and they’re all very moisturizing and make me feel healthy and pampered.

All of their dry oils are quite lovely, and their hand creams are deliciously thick and very moisturizing. I’m partial to the scent of l’Arlesienne (roses and violets, I think?).

My mother swears by the Divine Immortelle face cream and eye cream.

      Enjoy exploring!

And wholeheartedly agree with Koyel’s rec of their Almond line.

      I use their Aromachologie shampoo
-my husband prefers it above the gazillion other shampoos we tried…and turns out it works for me as well (lots of other shampoos turn my hair greasy and/or heavy and chewy within a day, this one does not.

And I like Cade (edt) a lot, a not so complicated but lovely uplifting woody scent (in the ‘for men section’)

I had a bottle of something calling out to me today, so I had to wear it. SOTD = Burberry Brit EdT. My bottle has hung around my closet for a few years, and still smells great. Surprisingly, it also has enough oomph for colder weather. I had always worn this in warmer weather.

The Gold bottle was a limited edition and a gorgeous oriental completely different from the original Britt. The Red bottle was also a limited edition and the best rhubarb I ever smelled, imho. I have all three empty bottles in my basement (holding on to them because of the name and you know why, h!)

Just a single spritz of Chanel No. 19 Poudre from a sample. Should have sprayed more, but my hoarding instinct took over.

Heading into SF tomorrow, but won’t make it to Tiger Lily unfortunately. Visiting a friend and will see if she wants to head downtown on Saturday. If we go into Nordies, I’ll make more samples.

Tomorrow will be a vanilla day, today I began with Agonist solaris which is crisp and citrusy in the opening but sadly disappeared on my scent eating skin. In my large sample stash PdN’s Le Temps d”un Fete popped up and I loved the narcissus immediately.
can we beg her to bring this one back? Wasn’t it discontinued or just reformulated. I would buy a FB and a Back Up. Oh so perfect in every way.
