Wednesday scent of the day 1/17

Posted by Robin on 17 January 2018 229 Comments

Hump Day, plus Betty White's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a little dab of Indult Tihota. It was no easy thing to find my sample this morning.

Reminder: 1/19 will be Vanilla Friday...wear a fragrance with vanilla.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Divin’ Enfant by Etat Libre d’Orange today. Vanillic, rather than actual vanilla, with orange blossom, powder, tobacco and warm skin. That cupid sure smells good!

Today I am doing lavender vanilla (because I love lavender and cannot do sweet orientals five days in a row ;) ).
Wearing Jicky EDP, Pour un Homme de Caron and Odori Spigo. I smell more of lavender then vanilla (despite a vanilla-scented body lotion under all these scents), but vanilla is still there.

I really like Jicky and I love how the vanilla rounds out the herbally lavender. Perfect!

I love lavender/vanilla combinations and think they are great in winter. Lavender smells like a summer day, and vanilla makes it creamy and cozy. I spent some time outside today and loved wearing these three scents in cold weather.

Wearing Shalimar Eau Legere from a mini I got as part of a lot at Goodwill. I don’t really wear much but it’s my 10 year old daughter’s favorite. I prefer this version; the lemon adds a lift and hangs around for quite a while. It’s more of a skin scent. (Then again, the mini isn’t a sprayer, so I don’t know what this would be like at a high dose!). I am trying to adhere to my use it don’t lose it policy and apply freely even though I know I will never find this again!

I was thinking about Shalimar today too, but went with a free and fig scent instead.

That stuff is divine. If I ever find a bottle at a somewhat reasonable price, it will be mine! YMMV, but I’ve only sprayed it and find the projection to be the same as the other Shalimars, i.e., substantial :)

Happy Birthday Betty- What a gem!

SOTD is SSS Yin&Ylang. Mmm-mmm good! I have a five day stretch off starting tomorrow, so, as he song says, “I’m going to California,” not see a girl with a flower in her hair, but to see some big ‘ol Redwoods. That has been on my bucket list even before I had a bucket list!

    Happy Humpday✌????

I ran into the same thing trying to find a bottle of Vanille Chocolat. It was really frustrating to know how cheap and easily available it was in Europe. I finally found a (used) bottle on ebay for about $25, which is exactly what I wanted to pay LOL. I was really persistent, though, and searched for it on a regular basis. You could also do a saved search on ebay, if you’re willing to buy it that way.

I’m starting the day in Vetiver Tonka. School was cancelled (really? Because it may snow?) so I am having a relaxing morning with my cat. After the gym and a shower, I think I’ll switch to Dzing!

Two pieces of perfume news: Andy Tauer posted today that the worldwide vanilla shortage means that he cannot produce any more Vanilla Flash, at least until the 2018 vanilla harvest. I love how transparent he is about the production side of his perfumes.

And I was poking around the review section of fragrantica, and there are 3 Hermessences listed for 2018 release: Musc Pallida (iris and musk), Cardamusc (cardamom and musk) and Agar Ebene (oud and balsam fir). Christine Nagel is the nose for all three. I’m curious to try these – wonder when they will be released?

Andddd, I just noticed that there’s an entire article about the new Hermessences (of which there are actually 5) on fragrantica. Shows me for just skipping to the reviews!

Apparently they are being released in February.

SOTD Guerlain Terracotta for a burst of sunshine with a side of vanilla on this dreary rainy day.

I feel pretty meh about most of them, but I do quite like Gin, Moss, and Gold. Now you’ve inspired me to give Whiskey another try!

    JPG Classique

this seems like the perfect week for Vanilla week! And Robin, that vanilla cupcake looks so amazingly delicious.

I really like Classique. Maybe it is because I wasn’t saturated with in in the 90’s because I didn’t wear it or smell it. Maybe when I am further into this habit it will seem simple and flat to me, but I do really enjoy it! Not one of my husband’s favs tho.

They do look pretty, but I am missing whatever gene makes people love vanilla desserts — I just look at those cupcakes and think what, no chocolate?

I do like rice pudding and creme brulee, but white cakes don’t interest me.

Was in a rush this morning so grabbed what has become my easy work scent: Idylle Love Blossom. At the rate I’m going with this one, I may achieve an empty bottle status! It helps that it’s a light edt that I can spray with abandon and still not overwhelm myself or others. I recommend this one to lilac lovers.

I went to put on Spiritueuse Double Vanille this morning, but found that all but the tiniest drop from my sample had dried up. I’m honestly not too sad–I have too many samples, and sort of appreciate reducing the count.
Fortunately, I have tons of vanilla in my collection, so I got to enjoy that last drop, and will put on Eau des Missions when this fades.

Hello, dear scented friends! I’m in a good mood. I was GOING to put on Tauer When We Cuddle after my morning swim, but I found my missing sample of Ambre Narguile rolling around in my trunk!!! It’s almost empty anyway, probably less than 0.5 mL remaining, but it’s one of my favorite perfumes (and one I might try to pick up in duty-free on my way back from Paris this spring?!), and losing even 0.5 mL was really sad. Anyway, having found it, I sprayed it with abandon. How curious that the first couple times I tried it, I found it cloying, heavy, and migraine-y. Now I find it just splendid.

So I am still participating in this week’s vanilla project! Those cupcakes look so good. The boyfriend and I are on a “diet” (in quotation marks because it’s very loosely defined as “eat prudently”), which means no vanilla frosting cupcakes for me (those are prudent under no guidelines). Mope.

I was going to start in January but we have a work event next week and also mine and my bf’s bdays are next week so I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it a whole 30 days in January ha! I can do without cupcakes, but the lack of wine/tequila/whiskey and cheese will most likely crush me lol.

I think we might have different metabolisms :) I lost ~20 lbs four years ago by running every day while not keeping myself away from delicious French pastries. Now, though, my metabolism seems to have slowed to a crawl. A similar caloric expenditure and intake has resulted in no weight loss at all. Getting older sucks. (Eight years ago, I lost weight by walking and running a lot while upping my caloric intake SIGNIFICANTLY in the form of beer. Those days are long gone.)

And instead of wearing it over one of my homebrew concoctions, I have under it nars monoi oil (monoi ii?) that I found on clearance at winners yesterday. Pretty nice! The oil is subtle, and only 1 spray of ll, so hopefully not smoking anyone out on the bus or in my workshop.

    Hi All!

    1) SOTD: Noir Pour Femme: Vanilla+milk+ ambery+ woody=pefect.
I really love this scent and how it is rich, sweet and sexy BUT not overpowering (if you are careful with your spritzes!)

    2) OOTD: Black blouse, blue slacks, gold earrings, slicked back hair, Fenty gloss. Kinda goes with the outfit.

    3) Also, yesterday, I saw a mini discussion re: TF fragrances and marketing. I like the fragrances, and I can even appreciate the over the top marketing ( TF is a man who seems to love sensuality in many forms). I do think that with his blockbusters you get good value. It’s the private collection that can put people off, and of course the price point, which is not meant for the hoi polloi, but really dogwhistles to a certain wo/man who makes a certain amount per year AND wants to present a certain way. Having grown up in NYC, I can appreciate that and shrug my shoulders at it.

    4) Back to the lab, looking and smelling sexy….while controlling my computer bank.

      2) I love your outfit- I’m in blue slacks, a pink blouse with a bow at the neck and pearl earrings…looking rather proper today!
      3) it doesn’t bother me either but I think partially because I’m incredibly attracted to TF himself haha. Plus I like many of his scents.

Yeah agreed on TF marketing. I know that quite a few TF scents work well for me, so I’m going to try a new TF scent, regardless of marketing hype. I might wish the Private Blends were less pricey, but I could say that about a lot of brands :)

… though I will admit that sometimes a brand’s marketing gets on my nerves to the point I’m unlikely to try anything new from them (looking at you, DS & Durga). But then I’m clearly not their target market anyway.

Not that I’m TF’s target market either, you’re not going to see me perusing his clothing / accessories (says the gal who’s working from home in her sweats and fuzzy slippers….)

I think the best way to experience TF clothing and accessories is wearing sweats and fuzzy slippers!

I remember I went into a store in LA that had a TF mini boutique. Just for fun, I tried on a tuxedo for women. Gosh, but did it fit perfect- and because it is meant to be worn without a shirt, it had built in bra support (while the jacket was closed. $5000, thank you very much. I just about fainted!

My bottle is now a couple of years old, so keep that in mind:

I think that tea note you may be getting is a combo of the citrus (bergamont) and sandalwood notes. It’s a nice astringent note to counter the super ambery, milky-vanilla notes.

I like many TF scents, and they work perfectly for me and my vSO, so (hypothetically) until they are caught doing something I cannot condone, I will just ignore stupid or over the top marketing (I do it already with most of the brands anyway). As to the prices… It doesn’t even feel that high any longer – compared to many other current offerings from many other brands. Besides, as long as I can find good deals on decants from FB split groups, I do not really care how much the actual bottle cost.

    SotD = Vanille Insensée

Prompted by She-ra and cazaubon’s comments, today is for Vanille Insensée.

The name makes me think “incense.” Nope! This is woody vanilla. It has an expansive feeling, transporting, uplifting, bordering on numinous though without any seriousness. It is remarkable.

That’s the first Atelier I bought, and not the last. I’ve always felt it doesn’t get enough love; you’ve inspired me to put it in this weeks lineup.
      You smell great!

Oh! I always translated it to “incense” in my mind as well. I was actually a little surprised by its spelling when I was typing it into my diary. Thanks for pointing that out :)

It actually reminds me of Profumum Vanitas a bit – or rather, a serious version of Vanitas (which is not at all serious, and loads of fun.) I’m getting orange, creamy vanilla, and candyfloss from VI. I haven’t worn it in ages – years, perhaps – and it smells totally different than the way I remembered it. It needs to be a staple in my winter rotation!

VI is so good in colder weather.

I was curious so I looked up insensée. I think it translates to “senseless” as in “wild” or “madcap” rather than “meaningless.”

Southeast Texas got a little ice and snow and my staff and I were dismissed to go home at 12pm yesterday, and told not to come in until 1pm today. It was a nice little mini-vacation. I’m continuing with my Berdoues discovery set, with Russkaya Kozha. It smells vanilla-ish, because of the benzoin. In fact it smell a little too vanilla-ish.

I have fallen behind with Berdoues — is it worth trying?

I’m wearing Mojave Ghost. It’s not vanilla at all. It’s pleasant enough I s’pose but not really a snow day kind of scent, ha! Maybe I’ll see if I can find that old memoirs of a trespasser sample instead.

Also, I’m so so tired. I remember being so tired when I was pregnant with Walden, and this time it’s no differed (though having a 3.5 year old to chase around all day doesn’t help). Only ~5.5 weeks to go… and then I’ll … still be really tired! :)

thank you – we struggled mightily to come up with a name! he rarely naps these days (unless he’s sick), but i did get to lay through a pixar movie, so that was helpful at least. :)

SOTD is Orchidee Vanille by VC&A.
I am exhausted from a long work day yesterday, (12 hours without a break) Today I am truding along but slowing down as the day progresses. Yesterday SOTD was Ummagumma from a sample. I didn’t get syrup as some others mentioned. More like cinnamon, incense, smoky vanilla. Nice.

    SOTD = Vintage Dior Addict

Got vanilla? Yes, in spades! My first conscious encounter was when I smelled it on a co-worker around 3-4 years ago. She was wearing the last dregs of her mom’s bottle.

Oh the commuting woes I can tell you re: stereotyping, but I will leave it for another day!

When Addict first came out, I purchased it as a gift for a friend. I think it smells so good, but can’t get the association out of my head to have ever purchased for myself. I do however, pick up samples from Sephora.

Gucci Bloom, transferred from my coat sleeve where I applied 2 sprays (3?) to my wrist last night at Sephora. Super pretty floral. Great longevity! Unfortunately, I work in a perfume free office, so I am hoping others don’t notice.
Reminds me (and might have heard this elsewhere) of the first Marc Jacobs perfume, which is a lifetime favorite.

I get what you mean, the MJ has more depth, or another layer or something that gives it an extra something. Bloom is very nice, but not extra.
The bottle on the MJ, though, the sprayer thing broke on mine, and all the testers I’ve ever seen.
Bloom has a really pretty, classy bottle.

I sprayed that at a sephora recently and really enjoyed it! A very pleasant surprise! It made me wonder if it might possibly be a much less expensive replacement for Carnal Flower, once mine runs out.

To my nose, the jasmine in Gucci Bloom overwhelms the tuberose whereas the jasmine in CF plays a subservient role, making them more opposite than similar. YMMV.

SOTD right arm = Organza Indecence

Wow! The OI is much creamier and more vanillic. And sweeter, which I didn’t notice before. Still a bigger fan of OI, and isn’t it nice that my bank account agrees? ????

Wearing Atelier Vanille Insensee, after waking up to last night’s Gourmand Coquin, which was still going strong a full 12 hours later when I applied the Atelier. I’ve been finding a lot of vanillas I’ve been testing do not have great projection or longevity, but that is not the case with Gourmand Coquin (which I don’t tend to think of as a vanilla – I think of it as white chocolate – but it’s certainly got loads of vanilla.) The Guerlain followed yesterday’s Il Profumo Vanille Bourbon, which has a delicious sweet and smoky vanilla opening, but gets very quiet very quickly.

I’ve bought a bit of Eau de Missions, and today the Tauerville 3-piece sampler (for $9! what a deal!) including Vanilla Flash. Hopefully the former will arrive in time to participate this week.

After putting myself on a (comparatively) restrictive perfume diet for the last 3 quarters of 2017, I’ve been back to buying all kinds of stuff since the turn of the year. Oddly, it feels liberating rather than guilt-inducing :)

I could do a vanilla week all winter. Pre-rabbit hole, I liked citrus and green perfumes, hated vanilla, and anything “sweet.” Nowadays I have a considerable sweet tooth, could bathe in vanilla, and looove orientals – the heavier, richer and more opulent the better. Funny how things change!

Like a few others here I work in fragrance free environment although I do cheat a bit from time to time in various ways.

Today I wore a copy of DSV in an oil version on my wrists and must have flown under the radar. Earlier this week I tried a bit of Vanilla Insensee with no repercussions!

Tonight I wore spritzed on some Shalimar – Mexique version.

Hope everyone is having a great week so far.
