Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-December 2017

Posted by Robin on 16 December 2017 207 Comments

Our same old open thread poll for a lazy winter weekend. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you bought when you'd gone shopping for something else, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

    Hi everyone!

Went to an estate sale this morning and though not as lucky as I have been, I managed to find a nearly full bottle of Chanel Allure EdT for $24. I’d never tried it on before but I pulled the trigger: if I hated it, I can always try to resell it. So that’s how I ended up picking Allure as my birthday SOTD.

It’s pretty lovely actually. Very Chanel, with juicy citrus, peach, sandalwood, and flowers. Smooth and mostly beige but still very nice. I’d rather have Coco but still think I’ll keep it.

Mmm Allure is very nostalgic for me because I wore it in high school in the late 90s-00s (along with Pleasures, Gap Grass and Dream, and Tabu Dreams). It felt very sophisticated to me, and I liked to think it spoke of my maturity to be drawn to something a bit more beyond my age than my other perfumes. I have just a sample now but should pull it out soon.

      Have a fun birthday!

It definitely walks a fine line between adult and adolescent. I really enjoy its clarity. Much more interesting than more recent Chanels.

    Busy weekend..

In the middle of making Sfouf cake, so my apartment smells like turmeric and cake.

Tonight I am attending a holiday party in Tribeca solo, then tomorrow I am grabbing a friend to come see the Holiday Brass concert by the New York Philharmonic.

This morning was the usual, greenmarket and textile recycling a bunch of non wearable hats and gloves.

    Happy weekend everyone!

Wearing Ummagumma, which I finally received yesterday and I am enjoying it a lot!

Busy weekend at home doing cleaning, cooking, baking, running errands, trying to finish my holiday shopping and wrapping presents. At least it is not as cold as the last couple of days and the sun is out! Big improvement.

I have a question: One of my good friends is looking for a soft vetiver perfume for spring-summer. I would love to give her a full bottle as a Christmas present. Sycomore would be a nice choice, but it is out of my price range right now. I am thinking about Guerlain Vetiver. Any other suggestions? I am running out of time and I need to order or go to a store this weekend. Thank you!

I have traces of yesterday’s Gabrielle on my t shirt and it’s really pleasant on this warm morning. I cam back home yesterday evening to see our son and dogs and then back to Invercargill later today to see Alex and then maybe home again tomorrow…so lots of driving. The hip is now in our freezer with the christmas turkey. Gabrielle reminds me a bit of Jour d’Hermes. That was a perfume I bought and reached for often even though it didn’t really feel like my kind of perfume. It was well-made and polished yet casual and I could see Gabrielle fulfilling a similar role…good for summer afternoons. Happy weekend everyone. Another good book I’ve just read is Ursula le Guin’s recent collection of essays Word Matters

SOTD is OJ Woman. Wearing the last of my sample as I anxiously wait for my decant to arrive. I was so happy to see ScentSplit is now carrying a few of the OJ line. I have ordered from them a few times and have been very happy with their service, packaging and frequent discount offers. No affiliation, just a happy customer.

My daughter and I are off in a bit to see the movie Ladybird. About a mother/nurse and her senior in high school daughter….which sounds ironically familiar to me.???? I have read some good reviews, has anyone been to see?

You smell fantastic in Nuit de Noel. It was a classic Christmas favorite for me for many, many years, until my love for it faded and I could not wear it anymore. But I appreciate its beauty greatly.

SOTD so far is Cire Trudon Revolution. Smoky withawisp of cool, winter greenery. Will probably change it up later tonight for a holiday party at a sushi restaurant. What goes with sushi?
Saw The Shape of Water last night which I thought was beautiful, visually and otherwise. Recommend.
Still need to get gifts for my in-laws but I’m at a loss at the moment. Fortunately, they’re the only adults we get gifts for and I appreciate that my huabands siblings have a “no gifts” for adults policy. My MIL ignores this because she enjoys gifting everyone so we do try to reciprocate since she appreciates it.

I had spent most of yesterday and most of this morning thinking that I have finished my Christmas shopping. Until I got an e-mail from Toys R Us saying that my nephew’s gift was cancelled because it was out of stock. It was in stock when I ordered it and I’m hoping that they don’t pull a Sephora on me since I used a gift card and a credit card. I threw the gift card away when I ordered the gifts. Sephora still didn’t put the difference of that partially cancelled order on my account. I am wearing Shalimar Ode a la Vanille for comfort. After my shower, I’m going to switch to Hedonist and holler at Toys R Us.

And for the first time ever, I’ve had an Amazon package go missing! Figures. Plus, we ordered a new stove, it was supposed to be delivered Friday, instead of which they called Friday to say it was on back order and would not be back in stock until February. What??? So I join you in consumer frustration.

Question for any NSTers in the know: just got an email from Sephora informing me that I’m $69 away from becoming a VIB member.
Neither Google nor the Sephora site itself is providing any useful info about what exactly the benefit is (it refers to an annual expenditure of $350). Any good reason I should be trolling for more lipsticks and other stuff I don’t really need? Appreciate your advice!

It can really depend on if you can really justify spending $350 on make up. I think that you get more points and free or faster shipping. I don’t spend enough in Sephora in a year to reach that status.

I’m a VIB member but don’t take advantage of the offers which I think are periodic online discounts and free shipping and I do all my Sephora shopping in store, and there’s not much benefit for in store purchases. I didn’t intentionally achieve that status. I guess I spend more than I’d like to think ????

      Here’s the status explained: https://m.sephora.com/about-beauty-insider

Makes sense, in my opinion, only if you buy a lot of small items online: you’ll save on shipping.

There are a couple of VIB promotions throughout the year where you get 20%. Otherwise there’s not much benefit. You only get free shipping if your order is over $50, but I think that applies to anyone.

Test my new decant of Vol De Nuit from a generous NST’er. I only sprayed a little this morning since I’m working today and I didn’t know what to expect, so it’s quite understated right now – soft, powdery, wistful, definitely old-fashioned-Guerlain feeling. Need to give it a heftier spray next time for the full effect. I can certainly understand why it gets so much love here!

I went shopping to one of their stores at the outlet mall the other day with my mom because my brother had some of their things on his wish list. I don’t usually go there but it was fun to look and it was jammed! They have pretty packaging and lots of nice looking candles. Most of their body products are too strongly scented for my taste, but we did manage to find him a few things. We were mostly sniffing the men’s products such as Bourbon, Ocean, and Teakwood. Good buys with their sale going on.

After digging more deeply into my Zoologist samples, I’ve just been reading about the perfumers on their blog. I am really impressed with the work Victor Wong has done to find truly indie perfumers outside the main ones you usually read about! I it’s kind of amazing to see such a strong collection from… I wouldn’t exactly say a ragtag band of outsiders but whatever the perfumery equivalent is! Makes me like the brand even more. Wearing Macaque today for some galbanum goodness.

Today I’m wearing April Aromatics Tempted Muse. I just threw in a few samples when I was packing up to come down to Galveston to be with my mom. I’m helping her out with errands and Christmas shopping. We’ve had cold weather for Texas with a bad storm predicted for tonight, so we’ll stay home and watch TV. Tempted Muse is pleasant but not at the top of my wishlist from that line (that would be Calling All Angels). I like the frangipani/tuberose/rose, don’t get much fruit, but am smelling something that I’d describe as “dusty.” No, not powdery, dusty. Maybe tonka beans?

SotD = yoooooge amounts of No. 5 EdP

I had an unaccountable craving for No. 5 this morning so did 8 big sprays. I usually do 1 or 2! Maybe because it had been too long, I last work No. 5 in October.

Also craving Jour d’Hermes and Infusion d’Iris Edt, those are on deck for tonight and tomorrow. Thinking I should change my name to Mostly Mainstream Molly.

Spent the morning tidying up the house and then cracked the whip over the perfumes. They’ve been unruly this past week, the naughty things. Now that they are back in line I can assemble bags of neglected samples and decants to take to work on Monday as holiday mood-boosters for my coworkers. I’m working hard to convert several likely candidates to the scented life.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone. You smell marvelous.

I have weak knees for No. 5 too. It’s just beautiful.

I love Luca Turin’s meditation on No. 5:

Alone among fragrances known to me, it gives the irresistible impression of a smooth, continuously curved, gold-coloured volume that stretches deliciously, like a sleepy panther, from top note to drydown. Yes, it contains rose, jasmine and aldehydes in the same way that a perfect body contains legs and arms. But I defy all who smell this to keep enough wits about them to worry about the parts.

Went to the mall early this morning (9:30) so it would be quiet and it was. Smelled the Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit, which was lovely but smells similar enough to Dries Van Noten that I didn’t need to buy, as I already have DVN. It lasted okay (going on 6 hours now) so those who were worried about longevity need not be concerned, although sillage is low.

Today I am wearing a sample of Heeley Eau Sacrée, deliberating if I need a bottle or not. I already have so many incense perfumes, but I do enjoy this one.

I am also pondering the deep desire (but not need) for backup bottles of certain loved scents. Sigh.

In Chergui, reapplied a couple of time today. Hit me with incense, tobacco, and hay! I am cooking. So far I have been prepping for a massive, well, you figure it out: shrimp, salmon, squid, clams, mussels, chicken, chorizo, saffron, rice, red peppers, tomato, some cut string beans (because I can’t bear to use frozen peas), and the elusive search for socarrat!

Have shopped and run errands all day. First up was Pet Smart (no affiliation) which opened at 8 am. I had to pause and talk to all the furry/scaly/feathery critters there and send up hopes and prayers that all of them that are gifted for Christmas will end up being loved and well-cared-for.

Later in the day, I was in a gift shop that stocked some Caswell-Massey products, and I remembered that C-M had come up in comments here recently. I spied a bottle of Jockey Club, spritzed a little — and liked it! Hours later, I can still smell it lingering on my wrist. Don’t know if I’ll ever purchase a bottle, but it’s a nice discovery.

Now to finish up some online shopping…

Hi everyone! Having a long hectic working weekend. Home now, relaxing watching reruns of Good Times. SOTE is Prada Candy. My bottle is almost empty. It’s such a good any occasion scent. I’m not sure if I will replace it. Anyone have suggestions for a perfume that is as easy to wear?

One of my go-to fragrances is Prada infusion d’Iris, layered with an iris lotion it is fantastic. I received numerous compliments on this combo recently! I find most iris frags quite calming.

I also use Bronze Goddess body butter in all types of weather, it reminds me of the beach (my happy place!)

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve just now have been coming around to Iris scents, and have found them to be very calming also.

You may want to check out Al-Rehab (Crown Perfumery). I enjoy Choco Musk (sweet chocolate musk) and I understand there are many other scents. They come in perfume oil roller ball format.

Back from the wedding in PA…and binge watching Young Sheldon. It was SNOWING when we left NJ and it did not let up. Got there safely, but late. The ceremony was short and simple; the wedding recessional was the theme from Star Wars. I ended up not wearing a scent for the wedding / reception. This morning before the brunch, I wore SSS Bee’s Bliss – perfect! I see myself upgrading to a larger bottle next year…in time for Spring!

I got my cable bill today and decided to take a closer look because it was a lot thicker than the norm. Price increases! And eeek, for the past 3 years, we’ve been paying for Starz and Showtime which I have not watched in the past 3 years. $864 later, I finally called Comcast and got the 2 channels taken off. I was taken aback when the CSR said in order to complete the transaction, I had to approve it either via a text message or via email. To which I said what is the option if the caller did not have text message capabilities (I did not have my cell phone handy nor was I near a computer to get email). After much hemming and hawing and saying it’s for my protection (really? i was told at the beginning of the call that it was being recorded), she finally said she will need to turn on the automated system which she finally did after placing me on hold for 2 minutes. Anyway, all these to say that if you have not looked at your cable bill lately, you may want to, specially if your viewing habits have changed.

Glad you had safe travels for the wedding. I also received rate increases in my cable bill. I have to call AT&T on my day off. They love to keep me on hold for hours, and transfer me around a lot.

I hate that! Sometimes, I would deliberately choose the equivalent of adding services just to get to a real person.

Hey there, Hajusuuri! Glad you had a safe trip. I wonder if, in addition to cataloging commuter woes, it might be amusing to list some of the more, erm, “personal” touches we’ve seen/heard at weddings. (“When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge for the processional, anyone?)

I really ought to investigate my bills to see what I’m being overcharged for, too…

We don’t have Comcast, we have Directv, but it seems like every year the price goes up and my husband has to call to get it lowered again. His strategy is to point out the promotional rates for new customers, and threaten to cancel.

Crazy! I tried to pay a credit card bill on-line the other day, but this particular company doesn’t have an on-line pay option. I called CS to pay my balance and was told I would be charged an additional $10 for telephone payment. It’s not an understatement to say I “went off!” The end result is balance was paid, I didn’t get charged the additional fee, and I closed my account ???? It’s just crazy ridiculous! A snowy wedding sounds very magical for some reason. Quite sure driving to and fro was a real PIA. ❄️

I’m overdue with canceling my Comcast TV altogether: last year when they’ve upgraded our box, I forgot to schedule the recording of a couple shows that I watched at the time (it was a summer break). So when the shows started, I missed the first month – and for those that I watched there were not previous episodes available – even to rent for money. So I stopped watching – and haven’t turned on my TV for more than a year. Probably it’s time to stop paying for the privilege to have it :)
Scentless wedding… I don’t know how you survived.
I should also wear Bee’s Bliss today: a perfect summer perfume for winter.

Good on you for taking charge of that Comcast agent.

A few months ago I unplugged the cable TV box and nobody at my house noticed. Last week I called and cancelled our TV package which reduced the monthly bill by almost half.

    Hi everyone,
I have very little perfume with me here in India, just a tiny bottle of Coromandel and a few essential oils, so I have been enjoying the perfume of objects and the environment around me.
One beautiful scent from today: I was eating lunch at a friend’s and she served home made curd (yogurt). For sweetener, she handed me a big jar of jaggery and when I opened it up, wow! What a beautiful perfume, smelled like sweet vanilla, nutmeg, spices and dried fruit, all kind of wintertime comfort smells . Jaggery is used in India as a sweetener and it is made from unprocessed cane sugar and date palm sap. You can buy it in a block and then just scrape off what you need.
Another kind of fun foody story: I’ve been doing a series of paintings here and whenever I send images to my friends in Boston they tease me about the paintings looking like food, icecream sundaes etc, basically all the stuff I crave but can’t really get here. Just for laughs today I started a painting of a jelly donut. Later when I went for lunch, I sat next to a German guy from Berlin who joked “Ich bin ein berliner”.

haha thanks for all the dessert-y emoticons bear! There is pretty good gelato available here, but nothing like a full on banana split or hot fudge sundae. If anyone started making good ones here they would make a fortune off us ex pats!

Unless you’re staying in a hotel, you should buy the ingredients and do a banana split yourself! That was how I started when I couldn’t easily get ice cream served the way I used to from my native country. And now I’m making all kinds of sundae – both just for us at home and for dessert when friends come over. I like mine much more than whatever I can get in most places where I eat out.

mmmm great idea! I think I might put some in a saucepan and let it liquify to get the smell into the apartment.
Jaggery would be a great note for a gourmand perfume.

Got my order from DSH perfumes yesterday and was blown away by the palo santo perfume I ordered, Play the Shaman. Super potent and pure palo santo. She also kindly included a bottle of amber lotion with my order. I will be testing that out today.

I also need to try out some of my oud perfumes with some sweet amber or vanilla lotions to make them wearable for me. I have gone off straight oud but I hate to get rid of a few of these bottles that were gifts from my husband. If that doesn’t work, swapmeet time.

Wearing Byredo Bal d’Afrique. I used to think of it as similar to Hermes Vetiver Tonka without the musk far drydown that gets on my nerves sometimes, but today I sprayed with abandon and it’s quite a bit fruitier. A variation on a theme still, though! I like it a lot.

Morning, all. This is the first REAL day of my holiday, because I get weekends regardless, so it feels special, you know, perfect, no mistakes made yet, no miscommunication, nothing broken or annoying, just a long day ahead to please myself in in. It’s pretty much unstructured, too. The only commitment I have is to get my hair cut at 11.30, and the looseness of the hours is a pleasure in itself. To celebrate this feeling of freedom, I ‘m wearing Queen of the Night, so rich, so deep, so complicated. I’m not remotely glamorous, but this perfume makes me wish, just the tiniest slither off the side of a smidgen, that I were. It makes me want to float about, uselessly but decoratively, calling people of all ages and any gender “Darling!”, and all the while dripping with interesting jewellery….in real life, I’d probably last about, oh goodness, 3.5minutes at that lark before I decided to make an onion tart or scrub the bathroom, but it’s fun to think about.

Eric has just brought me a little gift. He arrived in July with a bit of rabbit tail. That rabbit tail has been lost under the fridge, into your briefcase, up the vacuum cleaner, between cushions on the sofa, and each time we’ve retrieved it, it has been slightly more battered and sad than the time before. Now it’s mostly bald, and (ick!) slightly soggy from being carried (he’s teething and it’s not going well) but it’s his favourite. He has other, more beautiful and far more comprehensively be-furred toys, but somehow we don’t seem to get along very well without The Bun. I’m being paid a signal honour, to be allowed to hold Bun for a bit…no, it’s been taken back, carried off to Eric’s den on my computer chair.

Well, I think I might pootle off for a walk. I want to lose three kilos. Be well, all.

Ummagumma for me this grey Sunday. Warm and cozy- I get the teeniest bit of smoke, too. Running around doing laundry and chores then will decide if I should head east to say hello to Mt Hood or head west back to breathtaking coast. Decisions, decisions..
Smell well and happy holidays! Or, if you don’t observe any holiday, hope you have a superb sunday✌????

I’m posting after two of my favorite people, Waterdragon and Deva! *waving!* I am back after a quick trip to Southern California with one of my oldest friends. Today I am wearing Ineke Balmy Days and Sundays from a sample to put up the outdoor Christmas tree. It’s very green and has a prominent freesia note at the start.
