Lazy weekend poll ~ almost-Halloween 2017

Posted by Robin on 28 October 2017 286 Comments

evil pumpkin

We're getting ready for Halloween with our standard-issue open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance that scares you, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

(And a side note: I am out of town and have limited internet access. I will be slow to join in or respond to questions!)

Halloween is not officially celebrated in Poland but due to cultural influences it’s becoming more popular in the last few years. I still prefer to celebrate All Saints Day as we always do on 1st day of November.

I’m wearing Diptyque Volutes in EdP. Surprisingly its lifespan is shorter and sillage is smaller on my skin compared to Volutes EdT. Go figure!?

I experience that quite often actually. Think it has something to do with a higher content of perfume oil which makes the whole less diffusive.

I like Volutes EDT better than EDP but I’ve never noticed the difference in longevity. Anyway, you smell great!

Hey everyone! Coming from the under world (been working unusually hard, really) to share my spooky scent: Amarige. A perfume no living being should ever have smelled, a blend as devoid of humanity as the absolute void it comes from, a scent from ancient times, before light was separated from darkness and good from evil. The Lovecraftian fume par excellence. I’m pretty sure Chuhulu wears it. May those who dare to face Amarige have the strength to come back, even if they cannot ever be the same.
    Happy Halloween!

Amarige is a bomb. I wear it once in a blue moon when I need something very potent to be fully awake. I guess I will need to get a good spray at some point this week or the next one to keep myself going.
I hope you can recover from the horror of such a bad Amarige experience 😀 Happy Halloween! ????

This very funny. Kafka did the mock Amarige trial on her blog and it was hilarious. I remember being a bit fan a long time ago and might even have a bottle somewhere

Hello! Amarige is my friend’s favourite perfume. When she stays she wears it and it settles . Nothing in my ‘collection’ tempts her though she did quite like an Annick Goutal and borrowed that. My friend is a high altitude mountain guide so maybe Amarige smells different above 20 000ft in minus zero? I think I’ll give her my copy of Lovecraft as it does seem a perfect fit!

I’m trying Tauerville’s When we cuddle … for the second time today. People who have smelled it – does it smell really similar to Tauer’s Sotto la Luna Gardenia with just a tiny bit of amber? I swear that’s what I’m smelling, so I’m wondering if my nose is really off for some reason.

Have a great weekend – the only thing on my to-do list is buy Halloween candy, so I plan to relax.

A very glam friend kindly invited me to her 60’s themed Halloween party tonight, so I’m breaking out some of my most treasured (if not strictly historically accurate) vintage juice, Guerlain Attrape Coeur. Hopefully it will compensate for my utter failure of a Joan Holloway updo!

A perfume PSA: just bought the Le Labo Hinoki shower gel from their new, cheaper collection of body products, and it is pretty outstanding stuff. Gorgeous, STRONG scent, and a really luscious texture. Will probably try the Basil scent next!

Happy Halloween! I want to dole out candies but the pup goes bonkers anytime someone approaches the door (corgies..sigh) so we will be putting out a basket hoping for people to act in a civilized manner. We might spy on them with our security camera 😉

Undecided on what to wear today. Probably more Superstitious.

I do have a question! What are some good, not insanely expensive (<$50 for a regular size) candles? I would love recommendations on brands or specific candles.

    – most NEST candles smell too artificial for me, though I enjoy their sea salt/sage/lavender-y ones
    – same for Voluspa. Some are ok (yashioka gardenia) but there's none I love.
    – i liked most Diptyques and Cire Trudons I tried – but then who wouldn't 🙂
    – i am not a fan of amber / gourmand scents or where smoke dominates. Other than that, open to pretty much anything, from florals to masculine leathery ones.

I love candles, and I tend to go through a lot of them (especially in winter), so I relegate most of my candle purchases to the local Marshall’s store. You have to do a bit of looking to get past all of the DW Home and Yankee candles, but I often find all soy, relatively nice ones, like Aquiesse, and the occasional D.L. & Co., for less than a tenner.

I used to love the Pacifica ones (Tibetan Mountain Temple) but I don’t know if they are phasing them out…they were soy candles, relatively cheap and burned nicely.

Malin + Goetz is just over your price range ($54 for the 60 hr candle), but they burn like a dream (zero tunneling), and I do like the scents I’ve tried. Otto (a rose blend that reminds me of Baies) is lovely, and Vetiver smells sort of like TF Grey Vetiver (a clean/light vetiver). They’re my “Well, it’s at least a little cheaper than Diptyque…” compromise. 🙂

I’m going to need to try Archipelago (Calypso’s suggestion). I’ve heard good things about them, and I could stand to burn some cheaper candles!

Rituals has decent candles that aren’t crazy expensive. I have Samurai which smells masculine-a bit of humidor and old library. I actually like the way it smells unlit better but it’s not bad and is cozy.
I like my Archipelago Rose Water candle-smells kind of like Rose Jam.
I have to say, I’ve splurged on the Le Labo Santal 26 candle and it’s going on 2 years and still half full.. I don’t have to burn it that long since it’s very potent. I get a lot of compliments on how my place smells when I burn it before people come over.
My other favorite du jour is Brooklyn Candle Company Cedarwood Vanilla which smells fairly natural and the vanilla isn’t foody or sugary smelling. I got it mine at my local Wholefoods.

My favorite is Sandalwood Myrrh. Peppered Citrus is VERY strong (orange colored), and I like Honey Nectar Something (yellow).
I am burning Pumpkin Toffee now and it is true to the name, I had guests over last week and they raved about how wonderful it smelled.

Hehe same here as a recent DW Home purchaser. I fell for the Warm Pipe Tobacco first, and then went back to TJMaxx to buy more. I’m burning Neroli Mandarin right now, and it’s just ok. Not as good as the tobacco. I bought and have yet to try Wild Honey Nectar, White Birch, and Jasmine Iris.

Have you tried the Paddywax library series: Twain, Austen, Poe, wilde etc. some of them were fine. Also some of their regular scented candles in the coloured glass are not too foody/Christmas. They are cheapish. Also ecoya soy candles.

    Happy Weekend, all!

I’ve been looking for ways to reduce stress, and to be more calm and thoughtful. As are well all, probably. At the end of each evening, I commune with the feline furballs, brushing them and listening to them purr, and using this time to try and empty my mind of the day’s stresses. The particular qualities of the purr sound – both of my cats are really LOUD purrers – have a significant calming effect on me. Little did I know (though I should have suspected) that there is a web app that generates the same noise. I can’t remember how I came across it, but it’s called Purrli, and it’s good. It’s so good, in fact, that I immediately sent the guy who runs it some money. For all you stress monkeys out there, who enjoy the sound of a deeply contented cat, I highly recommend it.

Scent is another way that I alter my emotional state (not a surprise to any of you, I’m sure). Although there are certain scents that I associate with calmness (Jaisalmer, for example), almost every time I apply any fragrance I experience a transportive moment; a break, sometimes brief, sometimes long, in my mental chatter. For that moment, my mind is fully engaged in the scent, and I feel a distinct inner adjustment occur. It could be a simple “Look-squirrel!” change of focus, but I’m beginning to think that it’s more complex, and more profound, than that.

Thoughts? Any of you consciously alter your brain function with perfume?

My go to for stress is meditation. Sitting, walking, breathing any type!
Since you like scents maybe try to aromatherapy for stress relief while listening to your cats purr.

Definitely. Sniffing perfume encourages me to breathe deeply and slowly as I draw in the scent ( actually whether perfume or the air outdoors) so that is calming in itself. I also think that perfume is not just about smell but is temporal so it increases an awareness of the passing of time as the scent unfolds and changes…that focus is also restful and contemplative. And it is also a distraction and intellectually stimulating, and like you say that can be quite profound. I think perfumes that work best as meditation aid are the ones that are complex and maintain their structure ….the classic guerlains, amouages, Coromandel, and some amber or oud scents (L’artisan al Oudh or Ambre Extreme ).

Kitty purrs are wonderful. Thanks for the tip on the purr app. So clever. I get lots of relaxing feels from kitty combing and purring. Just watching our cats groom themselves and each other was very relaxing for me. They are gone many years now and I miss them, but after 20 years on litter box duty I’ve decided I’m living cat-free for the present. Someday I’ll change my mind.

I do think of perfume as a way to change my mental state. As part of my evening and bedtime ritual, it gives me a signal that sleep is not far off. My mum is an aromatherapy aficionado and has given me many bottles of lavender essential oils and so on. Rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, and citrus are other favorites for a mental reset.

Yes — agree with that moment of application as “living in the moment” focus, but also, I do find that some scents really do make me feel calmer when I’m stressed. Diptyque Tam Dao and CdG Ourzazate both work well for me but I’m sure it’s a personal thing and that different scents work for different people. Mixing plain frankincense oil with body lotion also works great.

In Prada Purple Rain. Lucasai, thanks for your recommendation. I received my big sample yesterday and it is really beautiful. Buttery and powdery the way I like iris perfumes. It reminded me at the beginning of the Infusion d’ Iris Absolue, but as it progresses it becomes more delicate and softer. Your recommendations of iris , perfumes always end up in full bottle purchases for me and this one already went to my list. I think it will be an extra present for myself for either my birthday next month of Christmas. Thank you! 🙂

I have had a super crazy week at work dealing with an emergency at a construction site. I am working the whole weekend and late at night next week again.

No plans for Halloween, but I have and will keep burning my pumpkin and apple candles. At least, a nice way to reduce some of the stress I am facing now.

    Have a nice weekend everyone!

Bear, I was thinking the same thing. But for me, its bitter-sweet! I’m a huge Prince fan and still can’t believe he’s gone. I’ve never tried the fragrance but think it would be hard for me to wear.

          Prince fan too, scentfromabove.
          I was just thumbing through:
          https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/prince-afshin-shahidi/1125855108#/
at B&N last week and was amazed at the height of the heels he wore.
Hip replacement and pain medication contributed to his demise, but the music lives on.
          RIP Prince.

Off to watch a band competition… it’s chilly, but I’ll be wrapped up in jacket and hat and blanket, with Organza Indecence to keep me company. 🙂

I am thrilled to announce that Bookworm accepted a job offer yesterday with a materials testing lab company! She’ll be using her chemistry degree as a technician in the chromatography lab (yay!), and her place of employment is an established but growing company THAT IS LOCAL. I can’t tell you how happy I am that she will be staying nearby instead of having to relocate to, say, the Research Triangle of NC or the National Labs in east TN, both of which she was considering.

The company where she’ll be working has a nationally-recognized reputation for excellence and also gets reviews from its employees as being a wonderful place to work. I could not be more pleased.

WELL, I’ve had a lovely few days disconnected from everything: phone, internet, work, the whole shebang, while camping on the coast here. I have been wearing a lot of Ambre Russe from my little decant I got about 3 years ago. It was just too much to wear in Florida, even in “cooler” weather. For some reason the cool/cold dampness here makes it better than I remember.

It’s safe to say I love Oregon! Met some of the nicest people camping, gave me a tour of their rig, fell in love with T-Rex, and had some wonderful talks. Ran across a fresh bear pile while hiking one day and was very happy I spent $40 for bear spray, which will also work for cougars, coyotes, and nefarious people! (Although I wish I had it in Montana, where it might really have been useful!)

The smells and sights are fabulous but Oregon is not friendly to van campers, sad to say. T-Rex loves the homeless people that sit on the street because they are at the perfect level to say hello to. However, she is NOT a fan of the cold and I’m glad I had the forethought to buy a nice fleece for her. I have another week of freedom before I go back to the salt mines, so I’m in town doing the “menial chores” that one must do when living on the road.

Happy trails to all and have a fabulous weekend!

Secondly, not sure if you saw my comment a few days ago but you really must try Captain Morgan’s Pumpkin Spiced Rum …I am really not a heavy drinker at all (occasional beer, hard soft drink or glass of wine) but I picked up one of those adorable little mini bottles of it when I was buying a lotto ticket (sadly I am still poor) at the liquor store on Monday and I must tell you straight up over ice it was absolutely delicious. I thought of you as my pumpkin fiend twin 🙂

It sounds too delicious to try! I gave up on my Not Your Father’s Root Beer because I was liking it a bit too much. That rum sounds wonderful, straight up as you suggest, or mixed in a nice warming hot toddy????

And don’t be too jealous. This lifestyle has its pros and cons, for sure. I usually just keep the cons to myself because who cares, right? It’s been harder than I expected, specifically the driving. These roads! Not even a semblance of a side rail, just a drop off to eternity. Florida did not prepare me as everything is flat and straight. The only time I unglued my hands from the wheel was to bite my nails. Now I have only bloody stumps left! Hope you have better luck with your next lotto purchase????

I vacationed on the Oregon coast as a child. It’s pretty wild even in summer, but fall can be a fun time to be there – you just have to be prepared for bluster and wet. A fireplace seems like a necessity year-round, but most definitely this time of year.

SOTM is Le Dix to keep me company during our crossword ritual. After that I plan to get reacquainted with my back yard. It’s a GORGEOUS day here and the garden has been sadly neglected because of the very awful air quality we had nearly all summer due to all the forest fires. Not communing with my outdoor plants for months had me feeling out of sorts, disoriented really, but that gets fixed today!

The new dishwasher is coming today. After washing dishes by hand for over a week I am ready. The dishwasher was supposed to be here on Thursday but somehow got lost at Home Depot dock. Ugh I feel your pain w/r/t new appliance drama! Our dishwasher died a spectacularly dramatic death two months ago, so we decided to replace all of our appliances at the same time. We bought our dishwasher and took it home the same day so my husband installed it, but on the day that the fridge was supposed to come, they just never showed up. My husband called Lowe’s, and apparently, they “couldn’t find” the fridge, so they just cancelled our delivery and didn’t bother calling to tell us. So the manager walks back to the warehouse, and sure enough, there’s our fridge, sitting out in the open. After that, nothing really surprises me anymore….

On the plus side, I can tell you that it will be worth it, because modern dishwashers are soooo nice. Ours was almost thirty years old and I wanted to cry when I ran the first load in the new one. I don’t know how I waited so long to upgrade!

My mom (whom we’re living with currently) bought new laundry machines to be delivered by Lowe’s a few months ago and I was appalled by the customer service (or the lack thereof.) It took about a month for them to finally get delivered and installed – maybe even 6 weeks? They use subcontractors for delivery, so the store and subcontractors aren’t within the same company, thus the communication breakdown. In the case with Lowe’s, it was also not possible to call and get issues resolved. My mom eventually had to go there in-person to work things out. (!)

Happy weekend, all! It’s cooling off here, we might even get some rain late next week. Fingers crossed! I am tired of the ever-present smoky smell, remnants of our recent fires.

Tried an Unum scent yesterday (I won’t name it as someone here surely loves it). I had to agree with several comments on Fragrantica which described it as the perfect scent for Dementors. Scrub scrub scrub!

Also worked my way thru my Cire Trudon sampler this week. The scent I liked best was Deux… definitely Perfumer H DNA there. If anyone has the set and would like to swap their Deux for any of the others, I’d be up for that. Ping me at emc dawt 7 1 1 7 in the land of geeemayle.

Gotta figure out what to wear to the symphony tonight. Sibelius. Something frosty perhaps….

    Happy weekend everyone!!!

Autumn is finally in full swing here. Wind and rain, trees changing colour.
And Halloween is becoming more and more popular here in the Netherlands. 15 years ago you hardly saw halloween stuff in stores, but now even the small supermarket around the corner sells pumpkins with stencils for carving. The whole ‘trick or treat’ is still not very common though.
But children here need not go without candy. 😉 In some areas kids go door to door at Sint Maarten (11/11), singing songs for treats. And Sinterklaas (5th of decmber) is also all about chocolate and ‘speculaas’ and ‘pepernoten’ for the children.

I splurged on some expensive AGL booties. But they are really worth it, leather is so supple and they are sooo comfortable!

    Sotd was Fou d’Absinthe.

Fragrances that scares me…well, i tried the new Serge Lutens Dent de Lait on a blotter last week and it was quite scary. I did not even dare spray it on my skin. Yeah I am such a wuss….

Dent de Lait sounds frightening to me. You are brave to give it a sniff on paper.

You’ve reminded me of my wonderful great-grandmother. She told us as children to put our shoes out for Sinterklaas so we would have candy the next day. A happy memory.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to stop in and say hi. I hope you are all well. Not much happening here. Nothing good at least. I haven’t bought a perfume in ages it seems. Too many other bills and expenses have destroyed my scent budget. I’ve been lurking around here now and then but I feel like I’ve missed a lot of important stuff. So if I missed anything I’m sorry for your loss, Happy Birthday, I hope you feel better soon, congratulations, and happy anniversary. That should cover most of it.
I think I was wearing Tresor Midnight Rose today but it’s long gone now. Time to refresh with something else but I may go out and battle with the leaves first.

hi Poodle, I’m feeling similarly — not often in the mood to buy. The space limit in my closet that I’ve allocated for perfume is 110% full, and I feel like money is better spent elsewhere. My greatest fear at the moment is that another obsession will find me (and my wallet). Scary!

Poodle, I feel the same way. Been a while since I purchased a FB of anything (so unlike me). My medical bills have been coming in left and right and it feels like there is no end in sight. Been going through mostly samples and finishing bottles of fragrances that I’m not that crazy about. So, you’re not alone. Also, I haven’t been able to be on here as much as I used to and like to be, but try to whenever I have some free time. My philosophy though is “better late than never”! 🙂

Went to Twisted Lily last night and nice to see fellow fumies (hajusuuri, thegoddessrena, Daisy…) I probably sprayed myself with 10 different things and sniffed a bunch of stuff but wasn’t compelled enough to buy anything. I quite liked Dryad (but 5ml would be just enough for me) and CdG Sequoia was nice but a bit plain, and Sticky Cake was more interesting than I expected. Doesn’t really smell foody or that sweet- miky iris and something plasticky? A little weird but pleasant.
I revisited Fazzolari Feu Secret but I kept registering something that smelled like chocolate and it was a little jarring.
Right now I’m wearing the remnants of a sample of Floris Honey Oud and happy to be getting some from the split meet. I like this one!

is Twisted Lily the one downtown or the one in Brooklyn? am I confusing it with MIN? one of these days I need to get myself to both places. There is also a new place that is opening up in SOHO in November…supposed to have fragrance and tea and sell stuff by the ml which is amazing! I want to go there for my bday this year.

TL is the one in Bklyn. I heard about that place in SOHO. Not sure if it’s a 9-5 kind of shop. Seems more like a concept space with events. I didn’t quite “get it” when I read about. If you have more info on it, I’m curious. And I don’t remember what’s it called so can’t find it on google!!

Wearing Incense Rose today, and looking forward to getting a package this week with my blind buy – Andy’s Hyacinth and a Mechanic. A while back we had a post where we all described our dream perfume, and mine was something that smelled like my garage combined with a pinup girl perfume. Someone here suggested that it sounded like Hyacinth and a Mechanic, so I am expecting a lot from this perfume! It’s not much of a risk as a blind buy, as even if it is not exactly my dream perfume, I usually love Andy’s work.

Hello, everyone. I’m feeling jaded: there was a party on the street last night, full of loud drunks (not even happy loud drunks; aggressive, periodically violent loud drunks) who got in the way of pedestrians, spilled into the traffic, and played three ghetto blasters with different music simultaneously. I got very cross, not least because the dear man slept through most of it. I could hear his soft breathing as mynire and indignation increased. Finally, I got dressed (kinda) and stormed off down to grumble at them, but I couldn’t sort out who the ringleader was so I could accost him/her, so my efforts were in vain. Then, on my way back up to our building, a cop stopped me and told me what I had tried to do was stupidly dangerous, so I asked him why he didn’t (a) do the job himself and (b) if he was so concerned about my safety, stop me before I committed such stupidity. He got quite flustered, giving me time to wish him a good evening, stick my nose in the air and hurtle back home, leaving him expostulating on the pavement. Idiot young man! He will do better, I am sure, when he is old enough to shave.Harrumph!

To perfume: the dear man thinks I need one called “Ride of the Valkyries”, and to that end, I suppose I might wear Femme. But no: I’m in Vanilla Flash, which I really like. It’s an interesting vanilla, not overly sweet, with a touch of booze about it, and some other bits and pieces. Suits my rather slow start to the day. I can hear Titus liberating pegs from the washing. They go “ping—whiiiiishhhh” as they spring off and then hit the tiles. It’s an unmistakable sound, and it means that all our socks and knickers are surely on the floor. It behoves me to go and impose order on the kitten universe. Vanilla Flash is the perfect scent for gentle domesticity, which is about all I’m capable of today.

    Be very well, all.

Good luck in the kitten universe????Your po-po sounds just as efficient as ours: they are quick to rap on your car/van window to tell you to move along, harass the homeless, get hostile with various skate boarders and bikers, but if a bank is being robbed or older person being accosted, well then, it time to sit back and “assess” the situation. BTW, you smell fab! ????????

Same but different problem here. A tui with a bad attitude has taken up residence in the rata tree by our deck. It is extremely territorial …. I hadn’t realised they were like that….and it swoops down like a magpie whenever I go outside . It has terrorised all the smaller birds, constantly chasing them at high speed and then it sits and honks away as if demanding a gold star. It is beautiful though and it doesn’t break bottles.

There’s a bossy young male tui in the park thi# spring. He keeps warbling away, but there doesn’t seem to be a female around to admire his beauty. He seems to have a gang of other male juveniles, but I haven’t noticed any aggression towards other birds. Maybe there’s plenty of tucker.

There should absolutely be a perfume called “Ride of the Valkyries!” But what kind of notes would it have? Wikipedia says valkyries chose who lived and died in battle and whether the fallen went with Freja or with Odin in Valhalla, where the valkyries would serve them mead.

Yes a Ride of the Valkyries fragrance could be awesome. I imagine notes like leather, smoke, indolic flowers, honey, oh and something animalic (valkyries ride horses, right?).

I’d like to have something with slightly tough woods in there, or a deep resin. The dear man adds his tuppenceworth: he thinks if something could suggest fire, it would be useful to represent my mood(apparently it was difficult to tell who had annoyed me more: the cop or the partiers). So, wood and fire too?

Perhaps the smoke that Jiji suggested could represent the wood and fire and leather could represent the kickass red leather bustier the valkyrie would wear (along with her red boots)! Then some flowers in her hair (maybe a little jasmine and tuberose). Not sure how to get in the thunderclouds and rain.

I adore the idea of cinnamon: sweetness and fire in one substance. We need to engage perfumers and tell them to forget fruity sweet projects for young girls. The next big thing will be a perfume for women who have power surges, and the brief has just come into being right here on NST. The valkyries are riding free!

Iunx Splash Forte is a wonderful fiery fragrance:

“A taste of strong alcohol, a carmine red water, warming and overwhelming. A warm water
from Jamaica, full of wood and “fiery” spices.
Red cedar, bay rum, peppermint and bird’s eye chilli.”

A little goes a long way…I usually spray recklessly but with this one one spray on each wrist and that is it.

Bapteme du Feu. I’ve been wearing this a lot and I like it more and more, especially the way it settles after a few hours. It actually seems more of a fit for the VC&A exclusive range (orchid vanilla, bois d’iris or the oud one) than it does for the old-style SL.

    SotD = Grand Neroli

Good day, all. I love this scent. It has a bright transparency that gives me a delightful shiver. Though I enjoy many Atelier samples I have no urge to buy a bottle.

A scary perfume that comes to mind is Vetiver Tonka. It manages to turn both acrid and sickly sweet on my skin. Quite a trick for one of the Hermessence scents. Oh well, none for me, more for those that love it.

Happy weekend to everyone, and stay away from the Halloween candy if you can.

Turned my own corner with the cold. Pretty much just expecting the cough to hang around another week. Felt well enough for a nice long walk in the park. I think every tourist in town had the same idea. Sooo crowded. But so pleasant.

Wish I had been heavier handed on the Cuir d’Ange.

I think I just might *knock on wood* get through October without getting sick, for the first time in what seems like about a decade… Hope you’ve turned the corner for good, LizzieB!

I’ve had some Cuir d’Ange hankerings lately – time to pull it out. Does it remind you of Vanderbilt? I think I’ve been craving Vanderbilt more than C d’A, but it must be one of those perfumes that doesn’t age well. I bought 2 vintage bottles and neither are in great shape.

What Vanderbilt? the original from the 80s with the swans? lordie, I loved that one! Must have drained a gazillion bottles as it sold for a song. Sad to hear that vintage doesn’t hold up well.

I loved yesterday’s community project. I hope we get to do another guessing game project sometime, because that was so much fun! I guess wrong for most of them, but it was fun to read through the guesses and find things that smell fun.

I also loved this Friday’s community project and had fun guessing perfumes all week. I hope we’ll do that theme again.

Today I went out for brunch and to the Museum of Pop Culture with my SO and a friend. We were there mainly for the revamped horror movie exhibit and also checked out a few others. I had a lot of fun but am thoroughly exhausted from walking there and home. Now we’re laying low, watching Stranger Things and cheesy horror from the 80s. I’m wearing L’Aromatica Pumpkin Honey perfume oil, a limited edition from 2009 (!!!). It’s perfect for Halloween weekend.

If anyone still wants to guess a perfume, I never got a chance to post about what I wore Thursday. It’s a spicy foodie scent, a touch masculine, that has been discontinued fairly recently. It’s from a British house that still retains the name of its founder and former owner/perfumer.

N&G is surprisingly long lasting on me. I don’t know if the age of the bottle has anything to do with it. My bottle is at least 8 or 9 years old.

    Opium YSL
    In all it’s formulations…
Vintage, Old, New, Reformulated, EDP, EDT, Parfum etc.
No bottled scent has ever caused me a gut wrenching feeling the way Opium does.
If I try it on my skin, it makes me want to peel my entire skin off and call Hannibal Lechter to eat it.
    Happy Halloween ????

It turns into a HUGE black pepper/carnation soliflore on my skin.

      Haha! So you like it?????
I have a strong scent association with vintage Opium. A childhood friend’s mother wore it and I was kind of afraid of her. She was super neurotic and yelled a lot. The bathroom smelled strongly of Opium, and it was carpeted, so the scent really hung around. I remember being fascinated by the bottle. I have a decant of the Fleur d’Shanghai flanker, which has the Opium DNA, but I find it wearable and quite nice-more jasmine forward.

Mmmm I love Opium. I’ll have to wear it soon. My aunt recently railed on about how awful it is and that it should be banned from the earth. (It gives her a migraine.) I knew this but couldn’t resist wearing it when we went to see a YSL (fashion) exhibit a year ago. Fortunately she was having sinus issues that day and couldn’t smell me. 😉

I haven’t smelled any vintage in ages. The new stuff doesn’t smell the same and was dissapointed when I smelled it. I was kind of looking for the flashback. That friend says the reason why she hates perfume is because her mom wore Opium, but I think it’s the mom part and not the Opiun, lol.

Oh yes! I just recently discovered two wonderful candle lines in that price point. Highly recommend Tatine candles and Village Common. I just picked up Tatine’s Peace Rose, which is stunning and, judging from the throw of the unlit votive size, should have a good throw. Also Village Common Highland Dell is gorgeous… outdoorsy with a hint of wood smoke. The Peace Rose votive was $25.00 and Highland Dell 8 oz. was $48.00. Looking forward to lighting that one for tonight’s episode of Outlander ; ) Both lines had several more selections I could happily have brought home if the budget permitted. ; )

    Happy Sunday, everyone!

Somehow I stumbled from the Best Vanilla for Fall post back onto one of the Best Iris posts and was reading about Milano L’Attesa in the comments. I haven’t tried anything in this line, but I love Iris and read many references that said it’s styled like a Chanel– and I ALWAYS need another Chanel.

But this seems to be hard to find to sample. So what do you say, NST? How is it? It looks like it received a lot of praise from perfumistas at launch and then… crickets. So, was it all just hype? Or do I need to seek this out?

I recently tried the entire line, thanks to Tiffanie, who freebie’d me her samples, so she ought to be able to let you know how to acquire them.

I personally did not enjoy wearing L’Attesa. Wearing it was like being in a kitchen chopping turnips, parsnips, rutabagas, celery and onions for a root vegetable stew. I did wonder if my culinary experience and having done just that many times interfered with my enjoyment.

If you enjoy the rootier aspects of iris, it might be worth trying. It was the first fragrance I’ve worn that explored that facet, so I may be the wrong person to give advice 😉

ha! That’s a great (lemming-killing) description. I like my iris with a bit of vetiver and florals– the pretty way, as opposed to Iris Silver Mist.

kpaint is right. L’Attesa for me had a note that was like a carrot from the garden that was still a bit green. It had a sharp, mineral, metallic note, but was still very pretty to sniff. I enjoyed sampling it but would not buy more.

I did not love L’Atessa when I sampled it, and I do wear irises like 28 La Pausa, No 19 Poudre, Iris Poudre, and Heure Exquise. Try before you buy?

One nice iris that I have not seen mentioned much is Houbigant Iris des Champs. Samples and FBs are available at the discounter sites for a reasonable price.

I love L’Attesa and where it a lot. Almost finished my 30ml bottle and will replace it asap. It’s effervescent on me, with a rich – and yes rooty – iris, but not nearly as cold and austere as Iris Silver Mist.

I love L’Attesa but I don’t think it’s a mainstream iris by any means. I wouldn’t compare it to a Chanel – it’s far edgier. I don’t think it aspires to be pretty or enticing, but that aspect works for me. It is right on the line of the rootiness of ISM without going into the boiled carrots in a tomb aspect for me, and I think I’m attracted to that attraction versus repulsion zone.

Will shortly be en route to the shower and then symphony matinee (Shostakovitch and Rimsky-Korsakov) wearing Misia, though I’m tempted to wear Opium instead. Hmm…

Last summer our farmers market had a Soup Guy (and a very talented one, at that) who we discovered, to our great delight, delivered his products during the off-season. Thus, we mostly ate his soups through last fall, winter and spring. We’ve since moved out of his delivery area, so I have to be my own Soup Guy, and have spent the last couple of days cooking up 5 pots of soup, now all in the freezer.

I ought to also cook up some other dishes that freeze well and build up a good inventory. I love cooking in the summer because of all the fantastic seasonal produce and farmers markets, but fall and winter cooking is more laborious, so I’d just as soon do lots of it at once, then thaw and heat it later. We’ve also got a great open-air produce market a few blocks away that will close for the season next week *cries* and I’m planning on loading up on (hopefully) discounted veggies on closing day. Better to cook it up now.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, all. I’ll be sad to say goodbye to October. Fall is usually miserable where I live – pouring rains, wind, cold and storms. This month has been astoundingly beautiful – sunny and crisp, dry, with gorgeous light and sunsets. I don’t recall having weather like this all through October… ever, really. Fingers are crossed for our usual mild winter. Last year was dreadful and I don’t think I could do it again.

hi kpaint, I’m my own soup chef too. I love this simple recipe and make it every fall:

      https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/spill-the-beans-minestrone

I usually keep it all-veggie, but it’s also easy to switch it up with a ham bone or chopped roast chicken/turkey and different beans, greens, and pastas. I freeze the leftovers in 2 cup servings.

Returning from yoga with the youngest CM8 and I cannot begin to tell you how it tickles me pink that he loves coming to yoga with me 🙂

Wore the Earth Mother hair oil all over my body…God this is gorgeous stuff and very reasonable priced ($18 for 30ml)..I don’t know why Jeffrey does not market it as a “hair AND body oil” because I looked at the ingredients and he most definitely could.

Koyel brought to my attention that the entire Artist Collection now has both body creams and hair and body oils…oh lord, I am in trouble now 🙂

My sports bra had the last remnants of Black Perfecto (thank you, hajusuuri) which I was also getting wafts of in class.

Now that I am home , combining Dame Mimosa + Osmanthus (thank you, ltsg!) and really liking this.

I have not smelled either Covet or Queen so I can’t say…to me Earth Mother is a sweet but not to sweet musk…it is very addictive to me and so easy to wear…it kinda reminds me a tiny bit of Dark Horse (but not as in your face) and New Musk (but more potent) and Dark Flower Mexican Vanilla (for the sweetness). To me there is a similarity to Jeff’s prior creations.

Trying out Dasein Winter Nights today. I think I’m going to agree with Jessica’s review from last year – it’s too much like a room scent for me to really be into it. I also find it a little syrupy for my taste. But it’s evocative as anything.

    Chanel Misia
    SL Bois de Violette

What others should I try? I like my violets with a side of damp earth. I try to avoid excessive powder or sweetness.

One that I really enjoy is Violet Disguise by Imaginary Authors. It has violet, plum , dried fruits, balsam, and amber. Its more on the woodsy side (which normally isn’t my cup of tea), but something about it was addictive for me. If you try it, hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Wearing PdN Vetyyver to cozy me up on a grey misty day. I will venture out after finishing some computer work. There’s a huge area here called Minto Brown Island Park that is vast, with miles of pathways and trails and an unfenced dog park, which is basically the entire island. I need to put a bell on T-Rex because I lose her in the tall grasses.

On the fashion front (ha ha!), I’ve been wearing the heck out of my insulated Meltwater Baffin Boots, which were a last minute addition to the van paraphernalia when I left home. So happy I decided to pack them. Plus, they’re red!

Hope everyone’s Sunday is calm and restful, with just enough chaos to keep it interesting 😉
