Monday scent of the day 10/23

Posted by Robin on 23 October 2017 189 Comments

Kendall Jenner for Fendi

Another Monday, plus Boston Cream Pie Day. It's also Mole Day, which has to do with chemistry and is more science than I can understand on a Monday morning. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in good old Fendi Theorema.

Reminder: 10/27 will be Guessing Game Friday. Describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Another warm, warm day. Wearing Seville L’aube. Struggling to keep my eyes open on a very busy day, so here it comes my 2nd cup of coffee (Bear, missing your triple-strengh coffee! Hope you are ok).

    Guessing Game:

I am in a beautiful oriental perfume, lemon, bergamont, rose and a heavy dose of vanilla. Famous gardens in India. This is a flanker

I wore that last week. I hadn’t smelled it for a couple of years and had forgotten how great it is. I do love a smoky vanilla. (And a smoky anything, I’m discovering.)

and now i am in vintage Chanel no 22 EDC because I have discovered that my decant is evaporated 🙁

My lord, this is great stuff….I used to wear this like crazy in the late 70s…now i know why….it is so freakin’ good…and while I really like the current version it just isn’t as great as vintage.

    Zoologist Civet.

And it is just too complex and fascinating for my ability to describe in words.

It has a wonderful mitsouko-peach note with a blast of cinnamon and terragon syrup which gives it a slight coca-cola feel.
I also smell propolis (a very medicinal smell, since it’s used in soar throat sprays and antiseptic mouth washes).

The freshly ground roasted coffee note appears as a ghost among woodsy cedar and juniper notes.

And I detect some vanilla incense (just like in Chergui) and linden honey or sweet amber (like in Eau Des Merveilles with it’s medicinal balsam of peru note)

Very interesting experience, like an orchestra of notes, a unique scent with retro (vintage chypre) feel.

I feel that it’s too herbal and aromatic to be actually sexy, but I have to wear it more times to form an opinion about how much I want to have it permanently.

I was thinking just last night that even thinking about a fragrance that usually calms me down, helps to calm me down. I do wonder if fragrance memories somehow activate olfactory receptors. Probably science already knows the answer to this.

Anyway, what I meant was that you could pretend you’re wearing Hiver 😉

I struggled with chemistry and physics in high school, but one thing I remember as a gigantic lightbulb going on over my head was what a mole is – took me forever to figure out that it was a numeric constant, like “a dozen” (but way way bigger). So Happy Mole Day everyone. 🙂 SOTD is OJ Woman, which today seems more vetiver-y than usual.

Just told my B.S.-in-Chemistry daughter that today was Mole Day, and she said, “Oh, cool!” with no irony whatsoever.

She has an interview with a local materials-testing lab company tomorrow. I am so hoping that this job might work out, because it would be lovely to have her stay close by instead of moving away for career, and because the company owners are really wonderful people.

(I managed a B in college chemistry myself, but just barely. 🙂 )

I’m going back to my rarely touched discovery sets. Up this week is ELDO. Today I’m in Dangerous Complicity. Whether you like ELDO as a brand or not, you have to admit they do very interesting fragrances.

Well, devil’s advocate here — I would like them better if more of their fragrances were more interesting? I don’t dislike the brand, and I love a few of the fragrances, but an awful lot of them were less interesting than they sounded, or maybe another way to put it is that I don’t see the brand as being anywhere near as transgressive as they think they are.

That’s exactly how I’d describe JHAG, which I’ll admit to actively hating, and which is not transgressive at all beyond their nomenclature. ELdO I see as often being too cute for their own good and verging into silliness, if not into territory that I find offensive. That said, ELdO has put out some fragrances that I really love, so I roll my eyes occasionally while enjoying a lot of their output.

Agree, JHAG way less interesting than Eldo to me, absolutely not a one I even want to own or would be likely to use even if I got it free. Eldo, there are quite a few I would use, and several I would buy if I didn’t already own too much. But don’t dislike JHAG either. I think the only brands I really actively dislike are the boring brands that also charge huge sums of money.

Hello from my little hotel room in Tokyo!
I want to share this cute little perfume-related conversation that happened on my way from the airport.

    Location: Taxi stand.
This fellow foreign traveller was lining up behind me and she just smelled really nice that I felt I had to tell her (and know what she was wearing!).
Me: Excuse me.. do you speak English?
Traveller: (In perfect American English) Yes I do.
Me: I keep smelling something amazing. I think it’s your perfume? Can I ask what you are wearing?
Traveller: (Sniffs her wrist elegantly and paused for a short while) I think it’s beautiful…
Me: I think so too! So…what is it? (Did she want to keep it to herself?? I started feeling a little bad for asking her a second time..)
Traveller: Oh, I mean, the perfume is called Beautiful!
Me: Haha! Oh right! Of course. Estee Lauder’s Beautiful!

    SOTD: EL’s Private Collection.
If only somebody asked me today what I was wearing! 😛

I’m wearing the new reformulation of Zoologist Panda today. I miss a bit of the greenness of the original, but overall I think I like this version better. In the original version, it was the drydown that I didn’t like, and that is better in this one.

I need to do a side-by-side comparison with Bat, because I feel like the earthy/ozonic notes in the new Panda kind of give it a similar vibe to Bat, but a bit less overtly weird.

And now my husband is in Beaver 🙂 He likes Beaver a lot better than Rhinoceros so I’m hoping maybe a full bottle 🙂

      Compared to Bat
Panda is just some sort of a fruity Escada perfume in a neon pink bottle.

      Bat is so rough!

So now Elephant can join Bat and Original Beaver and Macaque on the perfume shelf. I’m hoping they send me a sample of Camel with my order 🙂

It’s hard to believe that the line has been 3 years on the market and there are already “the original” and a reformulated version :)) And people fighting over which one is better.

        Anyway… I think it’s fun to explore!

don’t you think that Elephant reminds you of some Dyptique scent? I just can’t remember which one.

I loved Macaque opening galbanum (Cristalle and N19) but then it got so sweet like a pound of honey.

I went for a doctor’s appointment and mammogram this morning, now getting ready for work. Trying out Lancome Oud Bouquet. I don’t really know much about oud, but this is fairly spicy, and sweet, like home made whip cream sweet. I don’t smell any floral notes at all. It’s nice, pretty strong. I think if I were to over spray though, it would make me feel ill.

Six hours later, found myself in a perfume shop (am still in Rome — this wasn’t one of the giant fancy ones, but a neighborhood one with a good selection of higher-end lines and some (formerly?) niche ones like SL and Juliette Has a Gun. Now have Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT on one arm, and Hiris — which I have never seen in person before — on the other. Problem is, I kind of love them both. And I have been so very, very restrained this year.

Just discovered that Nordstrom has a NR for Her travel set (I think it is 2 travel sprays of the EDP and one of the EDT, but may have that backwards) for $45. That will be my belated Christmas gift to myself when I get home at the end of the year. The Hiris, though, may tempt me to a FB purchase while I am still here, exchange rate and VAT be damned. I will do another test-spray next week (this perfumery is conveniently located by the vegetable and cheese market I prefer), then decide. I am a life-long practitioner of delayed gratification.

I used to rush into purchases, but now that’s rare. But if there was a perfume store next to the place I buy my cheese, I might be in trouble!

This is our climate in most of California, every year: we get no rain in the summer. October is always the highest fire risk. We are just waiting for the winter rains to start… usually in early November.

I have yesterday’s perfumes on my jumper and they blend nicely and benefit from being 12 hours old: L’artisan Al Oudh ( probably my favourite oud as I like the warmth of it, almost amber and nutmeg with agarwood, a tad sweet and smoky maybe. Not at all animalistic on me) and Santal Majuscule ( a perfume I like best at around the three hour mark once the ‘jeux de peau’ aspect has faded).
    Have a happy week!

I’m always tempted to buy Al Oudh, mostly because I think the arches on the bottle are pretty. Then I tell myself that I have to curb my impulse to blind buy. It’s worked so far (at least with the Al Oudh, not so much with other stuff).

Morning, all, after a mixed long weekend. The timing went on my fabulous—but old— sewing machine. First time in 40 years, so I suppose I can forgive its crankiness at being asked to do this biiiiiiig job. It’s with the mechanic, and I hope it is fixable. It’s a heavy old Bernina, and I love it like a family member. We planned a new kitchen. Good. I tried to clean the roller blinds in the sitting room. Fail. I tidied the linen cupboard, with help from three excited kittens who thought it was an alternative universe. Good. Didn’t sleep last night. Bad. So, it was just life, really.

Guess. I’m wearing a gorgeous heady mix of woods, small spices and white(-ish)flowers. It’s French, but it’s meant to invoke India in a rather unrealistic way; it’s probably more of a winter than a spring perfume.

I really will try to get back to NST today. to confirm who guesses right. Must pootle to the bakery now to get the dear man a baguette for his lunch. Maybe I ‘ll have a piece too. Be well, all.

Happy Mole Day, all!!!! Hmm, I wonder how I shall celebrate. Perhaps I’ll celebrate by drinking 10 moles of water (works out to ~3/4 of a cup).

I’m wearing a sophisticated, honeyed BWF! It’s got some woody musk at the base. I’m not crazy about it, but I like it a lot better than I did a year or two ago, when I first tried it. Lovely bottle. (Yeah, I’ve given you roughly nothing to work with. I’ve described about 1 mole of perfumes.)

I’m wearing an impulse purchase from yesterday – one of those new “crystal infused” perfume oils from Pacifica. I totally rolled my eyes at the crystal thing, but then I tested a few of the scents at Ulta and I must eat my words because I actually quite like them.

The one I’m wearing is called “Breath Taking” and it has notes of cardamom, pepper, and vanilla. It basically smells like a chai latte and is the olfactory equivalent of wrapping myself in a big fuzzy blanket. Mmmmmm.

Am in Illinois, allergies are just wicked this fall. Finally found an OTC assortment that works for me: 1/2 of a Xyzal tablet in the a.m., the other half around 4-5 pm. Then before bed I take half of a regular Allegra and half a Zyrtec. None turn me into a zombie, thank goodness. Only sneezed twice today under this regimen.
Iris Nobile sounds soothing, should go spray some now.

Just got back from a weekend trip to Boston for a concert with my husband and am taking the day to decompress before heading back to work tomorrow. I am fighting off a creeping crud that has hung over me since Friday. It got so bad that I nearly missed the concert; we were standing on the platform waiting on the T to get to the venue and as I was sweating bullets just standing there, my husband said, “We need to get you back to bed.” I resisted, and I’m glad I did. The concert was worth it. But, I am paying dearly today for muscling through it this weekend.

Today, I am wearing Tom Ford Cafe Rose, which I like a lot, but I will not be shelling out the $230 for the full bottle any time soon. I had shown Katie Puckrick’s video review of Secretions Magnifque to my husband and our two (male) friends because Katie is hilarious and brilliant and that video is especially hilarious and brilliant, and OF COURSE they had to find out what it smells like, too. So to justify paying for shipping a sample of something I will definitely NOT ever be wearing myself, I tacked on a sample of Cafe Rose.

So now, Cafe Rose will spend the next week or so in my regular rotation, and the SM will remain safely quarantined until the boys come over to play with it (outside, of course!)

I hope I’m not violating etiquette or policy but I missed someone who wanted in on my Grandiflora split, Lunagreen. I think there was an e-mail problem. Could you please try again? I’ll attempt to add e-mail to my gravitar right now.

Wearing a soft elegant cloud of Iris that requires 8 sprays to last all day.

Commuting Woes and Wins No. 401

I have decided to pepper Commuting Woes with Commuting Wins to balance out the universe somewhat.

Win! Someone accidentally stepped on another person and apologized. NO kerfuffle ensued.

Woe! When a prime seat is available in a crowded train and there is nothing on the seat or on the floor, proceed with caution. What’s worse than B.O.? It’s a trick question. Give up? B.O. on one side and bad breath on the other. Yuck? You bet!

Woe! A window seat was available and I politely asked to sit there. The guy took his sweet time to move his belongings and decided that he did not need to get up because I can contort my body to fit a 4″ clearance. Nope nope nope…he finally reluctantly slid across to the window seat to give me the aisle seat. Really? He was upset that I interrupted his iPad mahjong game. I’m glad it sounded like he lost the game.

My “commuter woes” have been surprisingly minimal as I’ve dashed cross-country. One thing I DO NOT understand: why is people think no one can see them pick their nose as they drive?! I SEE you, and so does everyone else who has the misfortune to share the road with a nose picker!! Is it the same on the subway?
