Lazy weekend poll ~ International Rabbit Day 2017

Posted by Robin on 23 September 2017 327 Comments

PSA: the swapmeet is still open! And it's International Rabbit Day.

We're marking the first weekend of fall with our same old open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the last perfume you smelled on the street, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

For me it’s either the current EDP or vintage EDT. They are different, but share lots of DNA, and are perfect in their individual ways.

Funny you should ask; I have a vintage parfum, ETD and Poudre. I wear the ETD and Poudre all the time but not the parfum. I can’t figure out if it’s gone off or if it’s just how it is! I have been meaning to go to the Chanel store to sniff the parfum, ETP and ETD versions to compare.

This is, I think, very much a personal preference decision. My favorite is the vintage EdT, followed by EdP of any year, then current EdT, and (I’m odd) I’d put the parfum lowest on my list, because it is very dry and vetivery, not my fave note. But all versions are wonderful IMO.

No. 19 Poudre doesn’t really smell like No 19 to me; it’s like a greener version of Prada Infusion d’Iris, which I like but don’t love. (Jacomo Silences Eau de Parfum Sublime smells to me like a No. 19 flanker. )

I’d never have made the connection between No 19 Poudre and the Prada Infusion(s) until I happened to wear them on the same day and it was a real “duh” moment. I wear the Prada Iris Absolu, though I think I was wearing the Vetiver Infusion that day which smells nearly identical to the Iris.

I’ve always felt the flankers for No 19 and Cristalle (Poudre and Eau Verte, respectively) have more in common with each other than they do with their flankers, so I’m with you on that point.

It’s funny – I did NOT like No. 19 Poudre until I thought of it as related to I d’I, and then I decided that when I wasn’t trying to make it be “No. 19 Lite,” it was pretty good. Still not very 19-ish, but really quite pleasant.

I appreciate its diaphanous quality, particularly in the spring and fall, but I have to say that I find the drydown a bit dull.

I also didn’t come to it after a lifetime of wearing its pillar, and anecdotally, that seems to be Poudre’s largest cadre of fans. I wore Poudre first (thanks to you, I might add!) then came around to No 19.

Will also add that my favorite version of 19 is vintage spray cologne. It’s tighter and greener than the edt, but otherwise very similar. I only recently acquired the edp, which is a whole different thing to my nose, and look forward to exploring it more.

Vintage EDT and parfum, though I don’t wear the parfum so much. Not sure why – think just the dabbing thing.

Vintage EdT, then vintage parfum. Don’t like any of the current versions as I started wearing the vintage when it wasn’t (vintage) and it has changed a lot over the years. This is a hard question because all strengths of Chanel 19 have varied considerably in balance over the years, and each stength has a different balance too. Whatever you first fall in love with will become the standard you judge the other strengths and issues by. Try every variant you can get on skin.

I still have some Dame bottles and a Sisley bottle on the swap. I will swap for a decant of eau de Camille or Mön perfume Cheri par Camille or anything else AG. Or Vol de Nuit. Cleaning house and would like these bottles to land in another home.

Had some time to myself this morning and listen to Django and sipped Pleine Lune tea. Read the newspaper and relaxed.
No scent of the day yet, still have not showered but thinking of Songes

We saw a cute little white-tailed rabbit hopping through the yard a couple of days ago – must have been on his way to an International Rabbit Day event. We are enjoying our coffee while looking out at another gorgeous morning on Penn Cove, and I am in the remnants of L’Eau d’Hiver on the sleeve of the tshirt I threw on this morning. The wind has shifted directions and it looks like some rain clouds might be forming … might be a good day for laundry and binging on Stranger Things – has that show grabbed any of you too?

That show grabbed me as well. At first I was not going to watch it – I figured it is for kids. Then NPR talked about it and I decided to give it a shot. The next thing I know I am up at 3 am on a weekend at watching it.

I didn’t hear the NPR piece, but saw Millie Bobby Brown (the girl who plays Eleven) on Stephen Colbert’s show and was intrigued enough to give it a try … and then, as you say, next thing I knew I had watched 3 or 4 episodes in a row and had to force myself to go to bed. :)

Creepy, definitely. But in a good way. :) We’re only about halfway through the first season, but I gathered from the interview I saw that it gets more and more weird and intriguing as things progress.

I saw the most adorable (4H) rabbits at the fair on Labor Day. We go to the same fair every year but I’d never seen the rabbits. Turns out they’re in the barn with the feed cattle. I petted one before I saw the “Don’t Touch the Rabbits” sign and it was sooo velvety and soft. It actually had me googling “rabbits as pets” on the way home. I love all the mini breeds. What’s cuter than these little guys? http://www.thenaturetrail.com/photogallery/2012/09/Lavandas-2nd-Litter-40.jpg

Yes! The little brown one is just about exactly what hopped across our yard – same short-ish ears, same rotund little body. I’ll bet he was soft as silk, too. :)

My cats think rabbits are for snacks or I would be sorely tempted.
Someone brought a huge domestic rabbit in to the clinic the other day to scan for a microchip. It had just appeared in their garden and nobody claimed it. It was so freaking adorable and friendly. The woman said she hadn’t considered a bunny as a pet but she had fallen in love and was going to keep him since he played well with her dogs.

Great show! I liked it a lot. I’m seeing articles about “How S.King’s It influences 2nd season of this show (I haven’t read the article since I try not to read about shows that I plan to watch). It’s interesting because, while watching a whole ago, I thought how much the first season reminded me of It (the book).
I hope they won’t spoil it in the second season.

I watched most of the first season of Stranger Things and I found it definitely watchable and entertaining, but not compelling enough to go back and finish the season. It’s not really my genre, though.

I’ve decided to make a project out of using my discovery sets, many of which are pretty untouched. First up is my Atelier discovery set, which I’ve had for a few years now. I’m going alphabetically, so my SOTD is Ambre Nue. This one is good. I have a bit of a problem with some ambers, but I like this. and it is appropriate to the second day of Autumn.

Yes! And I’ve been fortunate enough to benefit from it. My sets are pretty basic: ELDO, L’Artisan and the like, and seasoned perfumistas are familiar with them already.
Hmm. Maybe dismantle them for freebies.

Bit of a slug this morning – I admit that College GameDay is one of my indulgences. I was tempted to go to Times Square, but coffee on the couch appealed more. Can’t believe Desmond chose my team (Cal) over USC.

I’m doing all four seasons in one day – I wore Black March while I drank my morning coffee, then switched to the gorgeous summery Jour d’Hermes while I raked leaves (in shorts! So confusing!). Now, post shower I’m wearing the lovely Dzing!, which is perfect for fall. Tonight I’ll top the remnants with something cozy to represent winter.

I sometimes get cranky about how pervasive the Internet has become. But today while raking I was able to listen to my favorite Minnesota radio station (and I’m a two-day drive from Minnesota!) thanks to its streaming service. So thanks technology! Just wish I could get back to Minneapolis for the Pixies shows in October.

ALL FOUR SEASONS IN ONE BOTTLE!
Now that would be a neat idea: a perfume with four distinct phases – each corresponding to a season, each surfacing as time unfolds. In my ideal composition for spring, lily-of-the-valley and honeysuckle will be the central motifs and for fall, crème de marron and amber. Not a summer and winter person…

My last weekend before starting back to work.

What a long, strange year it’s been. I bemoaned not having a project right away, but know with the gift of hindsight I see how much I got done ( including the dreaded fumigation) and am starting back in with a cleaned out, cleaned up downsized home.

Well, 99 days left in 2017 and much to accomplish going forward.
We have had some delightfully cool days in so cal and last night was down right chilly.
I have been enjoying this little bottle of Oud Mosaic from Banana Republic I picked up for 50% off. It smells especially good the next morning on my bathrobe.

My husband and I are celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary today! 17 years.. can’t get my head around that number. Still love and enjoy this man immensely and so very grateful.

Weather in NYC is just perfect today. Joining a friend shortly for a stroll in the park.

Currently in Carnal Flower but will be switching to one of my guy’s favorites, Jessica McClintock, for our special dinner later today.

Woke up thinking of Galop but got distracted by newly arrived swaps on the way. I’ve sprayed one arm down with Yves Rocher Voile d’Ambre and I have to say, it’s quite lovely. It reminds me a bit of Shalimar, if the amber (which I’ve never noticed in Shalimar until smelling this) were dialed way up. I’ve always been curious about the Yves Rocher scents and this is a good introduction.

Heading to my favorite brunch spot for fried chicken and biscuits (YAY!) then some errands.

    Enjoy the weekend, all.

I was up early and down to the farmer’s market before the crowds and heat and humidity set in. Honey crisp apples are back in season! They’re better than candy.
I also picked up a card to send to my college kid which reads “go forth, act decent, call your mother from time to time.”???? I’ve included a little spending money, because I am not above bribery.

Post shower I am in the refreshing combination of JM’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt and Lime Basil & Mandarin. Lovely on a sweltering day, we are supposed to hit 90 again!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Hope the sun is shining where you are!????

I don’t have kids but see colleague students on their phones all the time. I wonder, how often is expected from kids to call their parents? When we were in colleague, we called our parents very rarely (no cell phones, of course), but my mother is now 70+ and she would like me to call her every day. I really cannot do it, but I feel bad about it. I would love to hear what people do and find appropriate.

Yes, when I went to college we had a phone in our dorm and I talked to my parents about once a week. I have to remind myself of this because technology at our fingertips has changed communication expectations. I told him I wanted a text just once a week to let me know he is alive and doing well. I know he is busy with classes and meeting new people, which is as it should be. Also, the weekend after we dropped him off I was standing in line getting some lunch and there were two college age boys behind me and the one was lamenting how he just wished his mom would stop texting him everyday asking him how it was going, and what he was doing. I kind of chuckled inside but also made a mental note to self NOT to be that mom.
With that being said, I have a family member that texts with her daughter daily, so I think it really varies.
My mom is also 70+ and she DOES text with me daily. Lol.

If you are such a good daughter to your mother, your son should also text you more than once a week! I am a bad daughter. My mother lets me know about it by reporting what her friends said about me.

My daughter would usually call or text me (or Facebook message me!) at least once a week while she was in college 10 hours away. Some weeks would be multiple messages or calls, depending on what was going on. If it was a stressful week (she has generalized anxiety disorder), I might get three “How am I going to get all this done? I CAN’T DO ALL THIS!” phone calls. If things were going well, I would probably get a short “Hey, we did something cool in chem lab today” message. I tried not to call her unless I had something specific to ask.

Now Kid #2 is in college and he only calls or emails when he wants something. His free time, meaning call-your-mother time, is more limited because he’s in the corps of cadets, which is a small portion of the larger student body and places a lot of demands on him. He emailed me on THursday to tell me that the university health center did not receive his immunization record and would I please get his doctor’s office to complete and sign the form? I emailed back that evening that I’d gotten it done, and would he prefer to have it scanned and emailed back to him, or the actual paperwork left at his dad’s office across campus for him to pick up?

I have YET to hear back from him. GRRRRR. Boys. (The papers went to hubby’s office on Friday anyway, even though hubby was only there until 11 a.m.)

My mother is 70+ and thankfully does not know how to text. I call her 2-3 times a month, which feels about right. Sometimes she feels like chatting and calls me. I don’t believe the burden should fall to only one party to keep in touch. On the rare occasions when my mother has made a comment about not hearing from me often enough, I remind her that the phone works both ways.

Yes, 2-3 times a month feels about right to me too, but apparently it doesn’t to my mother and her friends. They are all heavy cell-phone users and I had to start using a cell-phone because of them (still don’t like it at all …)

Wearing Dans tes Bras from a decant I got from the generous hannahmom!

I had a sample before but I didn’t get it until I could spray (and was in a traffic jam at noon with no AC). Yesterday, I ordered one more decant. I like how violets and heliotrope are used in this one; this was done in 2008(?) but it still seems rather unique to me.

Hi everyone. Today would have been my first son’s 17th birthday. I lost him at 32 weeks. I sometimes can’t believe how fast time goes by. After work I will go home and sniff my almost empty bottle of Coty cherry vanilla, which was the only thing I could wear during my pregnancy. I will also inhale the scent of his baby hat and blanket, which I can still smell baby head and hospital. It’s very hot and sunny here, and I am very grateful.

Testing some swap goodies before I color my hair which is getting more gray by the minute- there’s a Portlandia episode where Fred’s hair goes gray overnight-that’s how I’m feeling right now. One day I might have the courage to just let it do it’s thing since I hate coloring. Today isn’t the day yet.
Anyhow, SL Sa Majeste la Rose on one arm and a bit of Floris Honey Oud on the other, which was an added sample, and some Guerlain Idylle edp on my hand. I’m enjoying all 3!

I recently got highlights for the first time in an attempt to make the grey less noticeable when my roots grow in (seemingly overnight). My husband’s comment was “Your hair would not be out of place in a late 90s boy band.”

It made me laugh my butt off, and then be annoyed at myself for caring about the grey so much. (Going off to dance to Backstreet Boys songs.).

Haha! There are worse looks, I’m sure.
Hoping to not care as much some day. I’ve been coloring my hair since college, though that was for fun and experimentation. I’m not even sure what my natural color is anymore. It’s some shade of dark brown.

I stopped coloring mostly because I didn’t like the color I was using and couldn’t decide on a new one. I like the streak in the front but I think the rest of my head just looks kind of dusty. If my (non-gray) hair was darker, it might be more interesting and dramatic. I love the look of salt and pepper hair.

My mother had very dark hair and her gray was a beautiful silver with streaks in the front so she wore it well. I don’t think mine looks like that yet. It looks diffuse. I’d love a solid streak in the front!

That’s what I wish I had. Mine is NOT dramatic. I don’t actually have that much gray but it is visible. A Pepsi delivery guy stood next to me waiting for the light and he suddenly looked at me and said, “I like you rockin’ that bit of gray – very sexy.” It made me laugh out loud. Told him he made my day.

My first greys came out when I was 15 years old. By 23, 50% of my hair was already grey. Since then I have been coloring my hair. Long journey. Grey hair has run in my dad’s side of the family since young ages. I get tired sometimes and wish I could stop coloring. Not the time yet……

I know a couple of woman who went grey very young and they don’t die it, although since they’re totally grey/white, it looks like they dyed it that way on purpose. Looks pretty cool.

I let mine go grey when I turned 50, it looks a lot better than I expected. I got so tired of trying to keep up with the roots as I had dark brown hair with a ton of white.

I can go about 6 weeks without it being too noticeable since most of it is sodes and back right now-and it’s long so can’t see the side grays really.

Have always been curious about that Floris. Super sweet? Over oudy? Love to know more.

Had my highlights done Thursday which helps with the grays, or I should say white hair, slowly dominating certain areas. So far this does the trick, thankfully.

It’s a dabber so hard to tell, but dabbed it’s a lightly sweet honey with some synthetic oud, nit as harsh as the Mintale ouds, to me. If I sprayed, it might be a different story. It’s pleasant.

I look really washed out with blond in my hair. Maybe going a few shades lighter than my almost-black might make it less obvious.

I’ve been coloring my hair since I was 13, from blonde to red to brown and back and forth all over again. A few years back I had enough greys that dark shades were no longer an option. Then a couple of years ago when I chopped my long hair into a pixie I noticed this strange patch of hair on the side of my head. I asked my stylist what was going on there and she said, “Oh, that’s where your hair is totally grey.” WHAT?!?!

So I now no longer have the option not to color my hair (which I would do anyway so no big) as I am many many years away from wanting to wear grey hair.

Fortunately I was a natural blonde as a kid and that’s the color I do now, which is much easier maintenance than it is for darker-haired folks. That’s a real @#$^.

Grouch….grumble…cranky and crabby here. First day of daylight saving, and I’m all anyhow. My body clock is all out of alignment with the time of day and I woke up suddenly from one of those stress dreams about catching a plane and being barefoot and leaving shoes in the now locked hotel room…you know the sort of thing. Anyway, grrrrr. When I finally staggered forth, bleary and unrefreshed, the kittens flooded furrily around my feet demanding food –“You’re an hour late! What sort of kitten parent are you? Titus, you get on to our union, and be sure to sound pathetic.” (Titus’ voice is an absurd, husky little squeak-growl.). And so forth.

So. It’s 8.00 a.m., and I haven’t even showered, so my SOTD is the remains of the Lyric I wore last night. I don’t know what I’ll wear today. Something calming. Maybe Bulgari Au The Bleu. Something of that ilk. No, Sycomore. Oh yes, HEAVENLY! The perfect restorative. My equilibrium is all OK again. I think I might buy my FB today. It’s clearly a medicinal need!

    Be very well, all.

Ummm…pretty…attractive, but undistinguished, like a girl who is lovely in the morning when her makeup is perfect, but looks less of everything by four o’clock, when her hair is slightly frazzled and the makeup is smudged. I think that my mother would have said that it’s beauty, but not in the bones, if that makes sense. (How I longed for high cheek bones and a straight nose when I was growing up!). Lots of people will smell very pleasing because of Gabrielle, but I don’t think I’ll be one of them.

And yes, Sycomore as an antidote to all things political. Even the dear man thinks I should buy it. Mind you, I suspect he wants to borrow it early and often.

No SOTD as I have spent the day in bed with MAN FLU, the most dangerous and debilitating disease known to humankind.

Yesterday I abandoned the planned Autumn scent as it seemed a waste to spray a sample that I wouldn’t be able to smell properly. So SOTD was Dior “Fahrenheit Parfum”.

    Top: liquorice, mandarin and suede;
    Mid: violet leaf, rum, coriander and caraway;
    Base: Vanilla.

We had an awful couple of days on our programme and there’s a reasonable chance the whole team might be fired next week. In retrospect, although the team has worked hard, we should have approached things differently. Well, such is the life of a contractor. I’ve already cleared a lot of stuff from my AirBnB apartment in case I have to hand back the keys next week.

No perfume yet this morning, I’m feeling a bit on the back foot. We forgot about daylight saving, so it’s an hour further into the day than I’m ready to deal with.

While watching our election results last night, I tested Dryad and Mito side-by-side. It’s amazing how two perfumes that start off quite similar (to my nose) can be so different an hour later. I liked how both of them changed, so that was no help with deciding which I liked best.

I’m in another swapmeet treasure today, AC Vetiver Fatal. It’s much lighter than I remember, actually, and I needed four healthy sprays in order to get any impact at all. I guess that makes it perfect for this inter-season we’re in right now: not quite summer and not quite winter. It’s also a bit sweeter/fruitier than I recall, but it’s still deliciously dirty, so I shouldn’t complain. Have a lovely weekend, all!

Why is it so difficult to change the time setting on appliances? Honestly…our oven clock was designed by satan. You think you will just flip it forward an hour while waiting for the kettle to boil and ten minutes later you’re on your hands and knees with a thirty page instruction manual, peering at the settings, pressing button A for three seconds until button B pings, hoping that button C hasn’t set off the self timer for roast dinner tonight…you shouldn’t have to tell your kid to turn off the radio and be quiet just so you can concentrate to change the time…and who cares anyway? Honestly, it would be easier to simply pack up and move to a place that is one hour ahead of ours ( the Chatham Islands?) Fleurs de Oranger on one arm. Scowling at my Baby G watch …

I swear that house must have had 10+ clocks to change. Anyway, my niece and nephew distracted me so much that I ended up changing some clocks forward, some backwards and others not at all and I did not discover this until the following day, which, thank goodness, was a Sunday so no one was early or late for anything.

    SotD = vintage Samsara

This is just grand, all rounded and plush, wafting yellow flowers and woods. It’s from a decant (sent to me by a marvelous NSTer) that I rediscovered while organizing my closet today.

The past week of cool weather has prompted a semi-annual cleaning and tidying binge. Must wash all the things. This happens to me each autumn (and spring) and thankfully lasts just a week or so. I also feel the need to bake. Pumpkin muffins, brownies, or both? Time will tell.

Japanese Peruvian fusion makes sense to me; Japanese Italian still does not. But your meal sounds delicious. Maybe it sounds better than it actually was ;) Was it more like a restaurant that serves Japanese-inspired and also Italian-inspired food, or were the 2 cuisines actually fused?

We had a glorious spring dsy yesterday and Jo Malone’s Dark Amber & Gingerlily was the perfect match. But today has gone windy and cold with rain expected later…so dithering about my scent choice. Thought maybe L’Ombre dans L’eau EdP but craving something salty. Perhaps Eau de Marveilles?

I woke up this morning thinking it was Friday and I missed my alarms and then brain kicked in and realized it was Saturday and the alarms will go off starting at 7:30.

    SOTD = Commodity Orris

From a Sephora sample. It smelled nice on paper and on initial spray, was quite nice and then, and then, sob, it devolved into GMSM*

Observation – In the past 2 weekends, on my way out of Wegmans, I passed by the fall display of pumpkins, hay bale, decors, etc. Both times, I smelled pumpkin spice. It just occurred to me that they must be pumping out the pumpkin spice scent as I don’t think any of those items naturally exude pumpkin spice.

Macy’s has 15% off all beauty but my account is now blocked (until their Consumer Protection Department can call me to authenticate me sometime within the next 24 to 72 hours) because I made the mistake of calling the Herald Square store to place a phone order for a La Mer item (La Mer is not available online). I am fit to be tied since I just joined the Thanks for Sharing Program (where you get back 10% of qualifying purchases) for $25 as I always end up spending enough to cover that and then some. I may stop by my local Macy’s to see if I can get out of timeout sooner. I am highly annoyed. I may end up doing something out of spite. Ugh.

*GMS = Generic Mall Scent Musk

If you go to the store and show them identification they might be able to call customer service from the desk and get you unblocked. My guess is they might be more willing to do this with a pending sale. If not, if I read correctly the sale runs through the 25th.

Woo hoo! Unblocked, ordered my item from Herald Square (more drama and the SA at Herald Square won’t be getting credit for the sale [shame on Macys]) and spent more because I don’t let 15% off beauty pass me by.

It looks like it is settled but I still have to place my order to be sure.

Out of spite, I would order an expensive skin care item, open it, use it once and return it, claiming I’m allergic to something in it. I actially have not returned anyrhing just because I changed my mind after using it; I will, however, return what I turn out to be allergic to (I’m looking at you L’Occitane Divine cream).

        Happy Friday!

I return skincare products and makeup all the time. If that’s the store’s policy I’m happy to take advantage of it if something doesn’t work for me, which happens quite a lot. I don’t feel the need to give a reason and actually get kind of annoyed if they ask. I assume opened items end up as testers? IDK; IDC ;)

I actually don’t shop at stores that don’t have liberal return policies (did you know Sephora recently changed theirs? After 60 days, no cash back – store credit only – used to be 365 days for cash back.) Same goes for my buying clothing & shoes, which I also return liberally. But I also buy liberally and am very loyal so I figure it’s all good on both ends.

I’ll also hold on to samples and decants that I know will work better for whatever upcoming season, so it’s always fun to have something new waiting in the wings.

It was a couple busy days at work and couldn’t post my SOTD. The reason was that I am officially on vacation today. I’m not going anywhere this week. The only thing I have accomplished was my bi weekly budget and there isn’t a whole lot of discretionary spending money and that’s ok as long as the bills are paid. Sitting in the dry down of Feminite du Bois and heading to the shower. Post shower will be either Epic or I will be wearing no 19 edt.

    SOTD = Hermes Twilly

If I end up buying this, it will be for the bottle cuteness factor. I had high hopes when I first smelled this on paper. Wearing it, it is just creamy white flower with vanilla, not gourmand and I also did not get any ginger or any spices whatsoever, probably because the almost coconutty creaminess basically took over. It is not unwearable, but it does not smell like a master perfumer had her hand in its making.

I think it is a cheerful scent and the bottle is cute. Definitely not the caliber of what I think Christine Nagel is capable of, but this is surely what she was asked to do. I will probably buy it, just for fun, at the Sephora VIB Rouge 20% off sale in Nov.

Good morning. I have breakfasted deliciously, I have a lap full of warm kittens, and I wish today could be yesterday so that I could sit a little and enjoy them peacefully. But it’s not. Sunday , I mean. It’s a Monday in spring…SPRING!…and I’m wearing my favourite shirt (beautiful polished cotton, fine navy stripe on a white ground), an unlined merino jacket, and I’m warm enough this way. In fact, I have packed away all my winter jackets and coats as an act of faith. This newly light dressing is enough on its own to put a happy smile on my face, but perfume helps too. So: Misia for many meetings, or Bel Respiro for deep peace? What a decision! How lucky I am to have it to make. BR, then. I’m enveloped in the slightly damp, slightly earthy, herbaceous greens of a garden not yet open to the sun. Oh, gorgeous! Gorgeous. I feel wonderful, and will now pootle merrily off to work feeling fabulous. Be well, all.

Just when I’d nearly written off Annick Goutal as “not my house,” I’ve gotten a couple of treasures in the swapmeet that have restored my faith. “Les Orientalistes” are doin’ me right: I’ve tried both Myrrhe Ardente and Encens Flamboyant and they are yummy, warm and cosy.

Today’s the last day of our local farmers market. I really ought to go but I don’t think I’m up for it. I’ll miss the baked goods just as much as the fresh produce so I really should go buy loads of breads and cookies and brownies and pies to put in the freezer. But I’ve got a long day of cleaning house ahead of me and that might be the only thing I’ve got the energy for.

Got caught up reading last night in preparation for skank week. I’m quite fascinated by the wildly disparate reactions to “skank.” I’m either in the anosmic “What skank? Can’t smell a thing” camp or a member of the band whose skin massively tones it down. Most of the Big Skank perfumes discussed just smell warm and cuddly / big, complex and retro to me.

But how to know whether one is walking around smelling like a porn set or a cashmere blanket? Clearly our own noses are not to be relied upon when it comes to this particular category!

Dabbed a bit of Edward Bess Genre on one wrist, which even on my scent-eating-skin is wafting beautifully at me. I wore this last week and was seriously swooning and I think I might like it even more the 2nd time around. Like, enough to want a FB.

Any interest in an Edward Bess Genre split? Hmm anyone? Anyone?

Have not tried Genre so I popped over to Fragrantica to look at the notes for Genre. Then I looked up Tiffany & Co which kelly 4 mentioned in another comment. Was surprised to see the bottles for the two new scents are quite similar.

Anyway, I’m with you on the skank issue. I worry I’m anosmic to some notes. I love Joy, no skank there for me, but other noses can’t stand it. It cracks me up that Angela’s skank post has over 300 comments. And her description of MKK is so good, it makes me laugh and feel queasy all at once.

Wearing nothing today because…chore day. Later in the evening, probably something soothingly utilitarian (vintage Old Spice or my alarmingly dwindling bottle of Caron Pour un Homme)… Which brings me to my current question. Following on the nostalgic vibe of the season, I am looking at old school masculines, particularly ones for which a complete grooming regime (aftershave, deodorant, and EDT, the latter preferably in a splash bottle) is still easy to acquire in North America… Part of this is a nostalgia for some echo of the paternal hosts of my 1970’s childhood… not just in the compositions, but in the signature-embracing regime ethos as well. Any suggestions?

Thanks all, I will give that a try… I’m kind of curious about some of the Trumpers (Sandalwood or Eucris), but right now my heart is set on Eau Sauvage (I already have the deo somewhere, and a ghost of the edt in a mostly-empty vaporizer bottle… the department store in my city has 200 ml splash bottles, as well as the aftershave. Both a bit of an investment, so maybe for Xmas?)

This is a new-ish bottle (with a blue ribbon around the neck) that was passed along to me a while ago. I forgot about it and was reminded when I saw a similar bottle (possibly the same, there are so many versions of Shalimar) in a photo on Anniky’s blog.

I put this one at the back of my bottles because I didn’t think it was a keeper. Today it smells quite nice, but it might be giving me headache. Can’t stop sniffing my wrist though!
