Monday scent of the day 9/18

Posted by Robin on 18 September 2017 276 Comments

Pantone's Color Palette for New York for Fall 2017

The swapmeet is open for business! Meantime, it's Monday and it's Cheeseburger Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Ineke Idyllwild.

Reminder: on 9/22 wear one of your "top 10 of fall" fragrances (unless it's spring where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of spring" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown above is Pantone's Color Palette for New York for Fall 2017. “Bookended by a dynamic Grenadine red and a tawny Autumn Maple, the color palette for Fall 2017 leans more to warmth, “ says Eiseman. “While comforting, enveloping colors and ease are crucial to the seasonal feeling, standout shades include a pale pink Ballet Slipper, a refreshing Golden Lime, and a bright Marina blue. These hues add a striking touch when paired with the classic autumnal shades of Navy Peony, Neutral Gray, Butterrum and Tawny Port.”

Thanks to a generous NSTer I am in Heure Exquise from a small decant that I am savoring…

Tea is Sweet Shanghai, sweet and fruity to counteract this dreary gray day..

You smell lovely! Thought if you when I was applying my lippie today. Forgot to recommend a Lipstick Queen I really like: from the All that Jazz collection in Paint the Town. It’s a really pretty sheerish berry/red with some shimmer.

It is a nice color. I jave the purple one too and sometimes layer them.

Today I’m wearing Escentric 2. I’ve also fallen in love with the scent of my new hair product (Killer Curls by Kevin Murphy). It smells like Dzing! and Dries van Noten had a baby. The smell doesn’t linger too long, but it’s a great scent first thing in the morning.

    Have a great day everyone!

SOTD is Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Cipresso di Toscana for “top 10 of fall” community project. It’s more of a late summer/very early autumn fragrance, and I think it matches that Marina color in the fall palette. To me, Cipresso di Toscana smells like a holiday at the seaside in the late summer/early autumn – sea air, warm days but cooler nights, cypress and pine trees… Relaxing, carefree but slightly melancholy.

A gray, rainy, humid day. Since I will be working outside in a while and for the rest of the day, I am wearing Guerlain AA Herba Fresca. To be on theme I had a tiny spritz of SL Feminite du Bois. One of my fall favorites.

I was tempted to play hooky from work today, but I made it in.

I’m wearing Le Labo Vanille 44, which is a fall favorite of mine, and this might be the year that I finally buy the smallest (but still obscenely expensive) 15 ml bottle…

    Happy Monday!

It’s a little after 9 and I am already annoyed. My Amazon Prime membership ends today and I have cancelled my Prime because I just paid my bills and only have $40 left in my bank account until Thursday but I have $55 on my Amazon account. I have used the give the gift of Prime to send to myself to use. I’m not understanding why I can’t add the gift of Prime to my Amazon right now so I can use my gift card balance to get 3 more months. I wonder if I have to wait until tomorrow to do that. Right now I am wearing Lolita Lempicka and will change over to something else after my shower.

That’s so confusing. (I try to get good use out of my Prime, and I think it’s awesome, but I admit I have no idea why you wouldn’t be able to do what you want to do with the billing.) Your Lolita smells nice.

I have always found that the billing has always sucked for Prime. I mean, come on, it shouldn’t matter if you pay by credit card or gift card, Amazon still gets your money either way. I use it to watch movies, listen to music and buy tons on Amazon. I think I might have found a way but it’s gonna have to wait until after I get home from work.

Trying to be positive on Monday, wearing Memo Italian Leather. Me loves it!

Got a call from police dept today, I was a wittness of a traffic accident some time ago and now they want to question me. I guess I’d call it a new experience in life.

Hope your memory is good. My car was hit when the mechanic was testing it after repairs a few weeks ago. Police report says it was the guy turning fault. He is fighting it so the mechanic gave me a loaner car. Bad side is that we are on week 3 1/2 of waiting for it to be resolved so my car can be repaired. It is just the two driver’s words against each other and the police report (which the feels he can ignore). I would have LOVED for there to have been a witness!

It may be the cusp of fall but it’s still summery warm in eastern Canada (thirtyish for the next few days) so I’m in a sample of Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine — I don’t love it but it’s nice enough, and seasonal. Should have worn California Clementine, which is more to my liking. Maybe I’ll spritz some on top.

Boy, Pantone is really playing the spread this year. It’s the colour-merchandising version of launching ten scents at once.

Yay, a color palette! That one’s nice, but I’d yank the cool-toned pale pink right out of there, or switch it for an equally pale pink with warmer tones.

It’s supposed to get up to 80F this afternoon, golden and sunny. I have to mow the grass once the dew has evaporated off. Meanwhile, I’m in Rose d’Ete for its last use this year, probably.

It’s Motrin Monday for me. Beautiful blindingly sunny day that’s warmer that I would really like.

Combating this with three hefty sprays of PdE Corsica Furiosa. My bottle is 1/4 GONE!! That means I have used 25ml (I’m a snappy mathametician!) already ???? I’m going through it like WATER! Already feeling a tad bit anxious about the eventual separation.

Happy Monday! May you all experience fast and furious perfume love like I have with CF. We’re together. Forever. ✌????

I am sure that all the perfume mathematical equations we do will help keep our brains sharp. I haven’t tried Corsica Furiosa but I wonder if it has a similar style to some of the Aesop perfumes, like Tacit and the old (gone) Mystra which tend towards the natural landscape/ outdoors / aromatic.

You are the second divine-smelling NSTer in No. 19 today. How is the lasting power on you? I spritzed the tester during two separate airport waits last week (same day, just a couple of hours apart), and was stunned by how quickly all traces of the scent vanished from my skin — seriously, in a way that makes 28 La Pausa seem like a champion of staying power. But Robin’s review here on NST lauds its tenacity. Could I possibly be anosmic after fifteen seconds? (I hope it’s okay to ask this here and not wait for weekend Open Thread.)

Not the OP, but I have to really drench myself in 19 edt to get much projection, and even then it goes into skin-scent territory pretty quickly. I’ve found that to be the case both with current and vintage versions.

I have a decant that is a rollerball, so I can’t speak to its staying power via spraying. It didn’t last long, and there wasn’t any real projection. But, I love it for the fleeting moments I can smell it.

For once I think I am not going to swap anything. Being happy with what I have? Weird.

I’m wearing Chamade. (In my head, spring scents often work in fall and winter scents often work in summer. Just me?)

Sometimes that works, especially if you’re longing for something opposite the weather. Or, in the case of spring/fall, scents suitable for similar temperatures can work. (case in point, Penhaligon’s Violetta is a spring scent in my mind, but it often works well in fall.)

But sometimes it just doesn’t work and the sensory disconnect is too much. I once spent a November writing about a young woman who wore Chamade, and every time I got up from the desk I got a big oh-yeah-it’s-gray-outside shock. I didn’t enjoy that.

Yes, transitional scents! They work for “unlocking” times in Vonnegut’s terminology.

Like you I did not post anything for swapping. I have been too busy lately. However, I was able to do some small swapping during the weekend after reading the posts.

I normally wear the same scents for spring-summer and fall-winter. However, I can wear summer scents in Winter if I really need to cheer up!

I would love to participate, but the vast majority are CONUS only ( postal rates are outrageous) , so I’ll just keep swapping one on one as they come up.

I always feel a little bad about not including Canada in my swaps but the one time I shipped there it cost me $11 to ship a 3ml decant and it took about 3 or 4 weeks to finally get delivered. I did see a number of Canadians post swap lists this time, though.

I always end up spending about the or more when I ship within the US!! Not sure why I end up spending so much, when I often get samples/decants from others and the postage is $2-3????

You probably follow the law. It’s way more expensive when you do. I started using USPS kiosks (no face-to-face with a human, ahem) and *not* choosing ground, which is way cheaper, then paypal post, which is cheaper still.

          • Elisa P says:
            18 September 2017 at 2:03 pm

So you (and others) know, It’s not just shipping costs but that it’s not possible to send perfumes outside of the US lawfully. I didn’t realize that until I’d already committed to a swap and was really uncomfortable doing it.

Being happy with what you have is a great place to be. Not weird!

In my mind, fall and spring are not interchangeable, but I wore a lot of perfumes this summer that I’d previously thought of as strictly winter. I was pleasantly and very surprised to find gourmands and the like to be equally delicious and enjoyable in summer and wore them on a very regular basis. Who’d a thunk it?

Well, it’s a little weird for me. :) I usually have one or two things I don’t want anymore, but recently, I’ve sort of started to miss some of the things I swapped away in the past…

I love gourmands and orientals in summer. Incense and amber really bloom in the heat! You just have to wear a lot less.

I feel like my dreams are always worse when I take a nap (and as a mom of twins, napping is required!), but my theory is that it is because you often wake up while still dreaming so you are just more likely to remember them, good or not. I had this problem yesterday when I went back to bed after getting up with my girls.

My So-Called Life!!! That takes me back. Jared Leto *sigh”. When that show was a thing, I had a hair cut and color very similar to Claire Dane’s character and got comments all.the.time that I looked like her. I thought the facial similarities were dubious — it was really just the hair, and maybe my teenage brooding attitude haha!

Oh man I loved Tweeds. I had a pair of dark mustard trousers and a dark turquoise silk shirt from there that I still dream about. They were actually so well made they lasted longer than my skinny youth did! I hope someone out there is wearing them right now. Then also a dark blue silk skirt that I wore so much it tore – during a conference!

I consider it a no brainer as well. It’s so elegant and dry downs beautifully for the day. Eau Premiere is even easier to wear in early fall end of summer- that lift that the citrus gives is just perfect.

I never took to Eau Premiere-too much vanilla for me and something about Chanel vanilla specifically doesn’t work for me. Allure has the same issue.

    Happy Monday!

    1) Last Week: The heat and smoke in PNW will kill us all! Allah, forgive us! Today: Cool and fresh and rainy, with brief, drenching showers. How wonderful. The air is being cleansed of the foul smoke and streets cleansed of accumulated summer filth. You can smell the soil, with all the microecology and the fall flowers.

    2) I picked loads of ripe figs and have been eating meals of cheese and figs and wine, like a particularly dissipated Roman matron. My crazy and generous neighbors have gifted me with eggs, homemade goat cheese, squash, tomatoes, plums, greens and a small homemade bottle of cannabis oil.
I made crustless mini quiches and salad for this week’s lunch with the bounty above. Lovely. Am super lucky.

    3) Am in Eau Premiere today- seemed perfect for the rainy, steel grey skies. Wonderful.

I’m wearing Loewe 001 Woman. Purchased it now. It is weired, I don’t think it’s necessarily an amazing fragrance but somehow I fell in love. I think it clicked with a memory and now it’s like love makes blind :) I could spray it over and over, then wait a while since I need to get passed the fruit in the opening…

I think it might have something in common with CDG Concrete but I find it more layered and wearable. In Concrete the sweetness is too dominant and linear for me.

It’s cold enough in LA to wear a sweater, and that’s true luxury. So to celebrate I’m wearing my favorite sweater (the one that spends 9+ months of the year in my closet), drinking hot coffee with cinnamon, and wearing vintage Opium. Opium strikes me as Tawny Port with hints of Grenadine in that Pantone palette.

Navy Peony is a pretty color but I’m a bit perplexed by the name, honestly.

Ha! I don’t get Navy Peony either. And sweater weather in LA is a joyous occasion! I remember when I first moved from LA out east I was totally unprepared for cold weather as all I owned was a light-ish weight rain coat which was my “heavy” coat and also hung in my closet most if the year.

I am wearing the princess of perfumes, the gorgeous Mohur. This is in my top ten fall perfumes in that it is in my top ten for any season ever (THE top…? definitely top three for sure, if not truly #1). I may flirt with those other scents, but I will always come back to Mohur.

On a much sadder note, the pain in my foot has returned, so it seems likely that the fracture never healed and that I’ll have to get foot surgery after all. As my PhD advisor used to say, “Life sucks and then you die.” (He was a peach.)

Good lord, your PhD advisor sounds like a sullen teenager. That must have been quite trying to deal with.

What a bummer about your foot :( :( If surgery heals it for once and all, it ought to be worth it, though?

Definitely worth it. The doctor said there was about an 80 % chance that my foot would go back to its normal functionality. Unfortunately, I have a strong foundation in statistics, and a 20 % chance of something getting messed up sounds a LOT higher to me than to people who don’t think about math all the time. (I’m constantly amazed by how pleased people seem to be about condoms being 98 % effective. There’s a 2 % chance it might fail with correct use?!?! That is so many percentage points! WIDESPREAD PANIC!)

On the other hand, there appears to be a nearly 0 % chance of things going back to normal without surgery. So there’s that :)

A patient asked my brother (a surgeon) that he read that a particular surgery has an 80% success rate; what are his chances? He answered, it was successful for 80% of thousands of people; for the patient, with a sample of 1, the success rate is either 0 or 100%.

As others in my neck of the woods have noted, summer came to a screeching halt this weekend. Dry and hot Saturday; 20 degree temp dip and pouring down rain yesterday. Will be the latter from here on out whilst that 20 degree dip grows eventually to a 50 degree one. *cries a little*

I’ve inaugurated it with some vintage Fendi. Will be spending the day swapping my summer closet for my winter one (seriously, where are my winter coats??) and starting in on my swapmeet list. Dinner will be my usual “summer’s over/fall’s here” meal of Greens, Beans and Sausages.

It’s the 19th here and the anniversary of women’s suffrage in NZ. All women in NZ were given the vote here in 1893, the first country in the world to do so. To celebrate I’ll wear one of my favourites: Journey . We’ve got our national election this weekend and we might get a change of government and a female leader.

There was a really cool American mountaineer called Annie Smith Peck who carried a flag “votes for women” to the summit of a Peruvian mountain (Coropuna, 21 000feet/6400metres) in 1911. She had thought she had climbed higher than any other person in the world but the altitude record actually belonged to Fanny Bullock Workman. The American National Biography online has info about them. Quite a few female mountaineers were suffragettes.

Morning, NST. Tell me, why do I offer to do things when I already have just enough time to do the things I already do? One of my colleagues broke his leg really badly a couple of months ago, and when I was talking to his wife, she told me was deeply stressed about the next issue of the journal his research centre publishes. I found myself offering to proofread it, which in itself isn’t a problem. The time frame gives me great pause though: I’ll get it on Wednesday; the proofs have to be with him again on Friday. That’s quite an ask. Now I feel anxious too.

Oh well, SOTD helps. Beloved, for a warmer day (should get to 16C) but it will be unsettled. “Classy skank” is how I think of this perfume: if Lady Susie gets caught creeping up the backstairs at 5 in the morning, dishevelled and buttoned up crooked, she’d be wearing a small reminiscent smile, a whole lot of defiance, and Beloved.

The kittens are in full riot mode, especially the little stripey joblets. They work as a unit of two within the bigger gang, and at the moment their object of destruction is an arrangement of wooden ‘flowers’ I have in a tall vase on the steps. Eric is resting up for a few minutes, probably thinking up his next sortie. He has finished his food and to show his appreciation to the chef, has solemnly placed a piece rabbit fur in his plate, rather the way we would put our knife and fork together to indicate we have finished eating. He does this all the time, far too often for it to be random or coincidence, and it really does seem (to this fond owner) to be purposeful and intentional. However, I accept that the key words in this paragraph are “fond owner”…I want to think he’s clever, because he’s so much smaller than the bruisers in the gang.

Be well, all. I love your scents today.

What?! That’s definitely on purpose! Says this rampant anthropomorphizer of kittens. But really, it’s kitten-pomorphizing as leaving the remnants of an eaten carcus for one’s person is totally a kitten thing. ‘Look what I caught!’ So perhaps he’s trying to take credit for the lovely meal you served up.

I had tried Iris Silver Mist and Atelier’s Silver Iris, neither of which I enjoyed. I fell in love with the Prada and also No. 19. SOTD is something I wish all of you can experience some day:local Botanical brand Rose en Bos(Roses and vines) Imithi.I always describe it as “forest mulch”,because it reminds me of cool damp earth, wet leaves and mud,and some sweet forest fruits and nuts.Such an authentic, local perfume.I love it.I did notice a serious evaporation situation in my bottle, this is the first spray bottle in my collection this is happening to!(Chanel Parfum is also sharing waaaaaayyy too much with the angels, but it’s a dabber so expected that!)

After a long weekend, today is my Saturday. It’s been quite busy too!
SOTD is Narciso White Cube. I know that’s not the official name, but it should be. The last couple of times I’ve worn this, my first thought has been: jet-puffed marshmallow creme. Does anyone remember that? Do they still make it? Right out of the jar on a spoon. Yum. This combined with wood shavings is very lovely on my skin.
The highlight of my day has been the nice young gentleman at Trader Joe’s who addressed me as “miss” when he handed me my receipt. ☺️I despise “ma’am,” even though I am of ma’am age now.

Now to read everyone’s comments! And top fall picks!

I can’t even remember where this incident occurred, but it was a man who was slightly taken aback but also amused. Hopefully my comment stuck with him!

Decided to hit my Tauer samples and picked Une Rose Vermeille. Pretty enough but not really my style. (Which is what my notes from the last time I wore it said!)

I like and wear Une Rose Vermeille but for me it works only in Winter.

Robin, in the swapmeet rules says the next freebiemeet will be in May or June. Was the freebiemeet for September 30 cancelled or is still going?

Horribly busy at work today so I am posting late. I celebrated cheeseburger day with a veggie burger. SOTD was Equistrius. Now to read the comments.

I wore Fils de Dieu earlier and I think this evening I will spray a good amount of something leathery in hopes of summoning autumn. Weather report says we’ll be in the high 80s next weekend – WOOT!

    SotD = L. T. Piver Heliotrope Blanc

Comforting almond-y flowers, cheap as chips, I like it very much. Today the weather is finally cool enough for a wool sweater in the morning. I’m looking forward to everyone’s autumn fragrance picks.

That Pantone palette takes me back in time. Years ago I often wore a ballet pink blouse, shirt, or turtleneck with a skirt or trousers in a dark brown, navy, grey, or black. It was my go-to uniform for the office. Very cheerful, especially on a Monday.

    SOTD = SSS Pacific Forest

I will try to do 5 days of Fall Fragrances. Love this resinous green perfume. The weather, not so much, as we are back to warm humid weather.

Am I the last person to notice that embroidered and patchwork jeans are back in style? I’m behind in perusing clothes catalogs and I decided to look through JJill and Sahalie, both of which happened to have this type of jeans for sale. In any case, I saw a really ugly pair and googled it to get the link. OH MY, lordie lordie, the jeans I thought were ugly were actually “not bad” as compared with some of the ones that came up in the search…so ugly they hurt my eyes and I cannot unsee.

I am herewith on a quest to find the ugliest pair of jeans in the world. I’ll do a countdown, starting at No. 5:

    http://sahalie.blair.com/p/156013.uts?cid=pl_sa_google&src_code=SAHPSGGO&product_id=9405314&adpos=1o1&creative=59983766167&device=t&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_ZvWgf-v1gIVjlmGCh1Dug8wEAQYASABEgKxAPD_BwE

    Commuting Woes No. 392:
Why do rubenesque+ people who have luggage and other big bags INSIST on standing in the middle of the train platform?

    Commuting Woes No. 393:
Yep, again with the armpit! Why do people with armpit B.O. like to hold on to the highest part of a pole? One could tell that the circulation inside the train car is really good because the odor wafted all around, but of course, there are usually a bunch with B.O.

      Oh wow those jeans..so ugly.

      Looking forward to 4 to 1 :D

Please tell me there is a stone washed, high waist, carrot fit jeans in there. Bonus if it has some zips or paint splashes on it to brighten things up.
