Tuesday scent of the day 8/22

Posted by Robin on 22 August 2017 279 Comments

Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin

Tuesday! A belated RIP to Jerry Lewis, and we have some writerly birthdays today: Dorothy Parker, Ray Bradbury, Annie Proulx. What fragrance are you wearing?

I did not feel like matching a writer with a fragrance and I did not feel like back to school. I'm wearing a light spritz of L'Artisan Séville à l’Aube. Tea at the moment is good old Irish Breakfast from Upton.

Reminder: on 8/25 we're doing Back to school... wear a fragrance that fits the theme, for whatever reason.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Phlur Olmsted & Vaux because when I wore this yesterday the back to schoolers on the college campus told me I smell “awesome”….might stick with this one for the entire week :)

Okay, I’m convinced????Which other two should I add to the sample set…? Moab looks interesting.

LOL! I do not want to be an enabler, madtowngirl :) BUT I will say yes to Moab (very warm vanilla cinnamon on my skin)…if you are into Vetiver then Greylocke….and I also like Hanami (is it described as an aquatic floral but I do not get that at all….something about it reminds me of Angel Muse without the vetiver…maybe the combo of hazelnut and sandalwood but I really dig it!)…Hepcat is booze and oud and black vetiver…it is interesting but definitely for cold weather, IMHO…..Siano smells fruity to me…..bananas and osmanthus comes to mind…I like it but see it as a warm weather scent….thus far I have been monogamous with Olsted & Vaux and have gotten a huge number of compliments so I guess it really works with my skin chemistry….we will see if I get any compliments when I start to wear the others :)

From my recollection of trying them at Sniffa last year, Moab was my fave of what I tried. I’m curious about the one you’re wearing. What does it smell like to you?

From what I am smelling it is citrus, greens and woods….very subtle but it must be doing some magic with my skin because I am getting loads of compliments. I did a bit of research and others have compared it to Xerjoff Nio, Chanel Homme Allure Edition Blanche and Le Labo Bergamot 22. I have never tried any of these three so I can’t say for sure if they are similar to Olmsted & Vaux. and yes, Moab is fantastic…I think those who like Andy Tauer’s work would like Moab.

A youtube reviewer LOVED Greylocke and he compared it to Guerlain’s Vetiver but said it had a more youthful brasher vibe (versus the refined restraint of the Guerlain). I think you might like Greylocke if you are into vetiver.

You are starting to create a real lemming, CM8, especially after reading about Olmsted in “Devil in the White City” since he designed the gardens at the Chicago World Fair in 1893.

Ha!Ha! Sorry Sapphire! I think I was initially drawn to this fragrance for the exact same reason, knowing that Olmsted & Vaux, the architects of Central Park, NYC, were the inspiration behind the name of it :)

Another lemming enabled here! I looked it up yesterday, and it’s next on my list to sample. I need to pause for a bit on perfume shopping, but I’m 100% sold after reading your raves :)

Well, bear in mind that my skin and my nose can be wonky so what I smell may not be what you smell….however, I do have to say that the compliments from others sold me….I will encourage you to pause because I too am trying to slow down on all shopping! But when you do decide to bite the bullet it isn’t such a bad deal on the samples.

Back to reality, back to WORK! Awful, since I found tons of things waiting on my desk to be done “asap” (sigh!). Super hot and humid day. We will reach 90 but feel it in the 100’s. Summer is almost over so I do not want to complain. Wearing Annick Goutal Quel Amour and having my third cup of iced coffee.

Oh, I’ll complain about summer! It won’t get quite that hot here, but it will feel in the upper 90s due to humidity.

Enjoy the Quel Amour and the iced coffee — I’m about to go see if the jar I stuck in the freezer 90 minutes ago has cooled down enough to be called “iced.”

How is the Hawaii plan coming along? I have to admit I’ve wondered how you’ll deal with eternal summer/no snow if it goes through ;)

You’ve also reminded me that I haven’t made any cold brew this summer. I drank it all last summer since I couldn’t drink tea, but this year I’m back on the tea train. But some cold brew is in order, too!

Another in the hot camp! My ideal environment would be 80 degrees year-round, inside and out. (aka southern California)

I hate HATE HATE hate being cold (and anything below 75 degrees qualifies.) I was really spoiled for the last 9 years having radiant (steam) heat and don’t know how I’ll survive this winter without it :( :( (or fall or spring, for that matter.)

Oh no! I prefer heat over cold for sure. But there are days….. Not so glad the season is almost over.

I love warm weather but hate having to slather in sunscreen, hate high humidity and those pesky mosquitoes that come with it.
I do love winter clothes, but could do without the bone chilling cold.

I will say that I love sweater shopping. I’ve bought more sweaters this summer than anything else – but I live in a climate where we wear sweaters year-round. It’s also hard to justify buying any more summer clothing. The season’s so short I never get around to wearing what’s already in my closet. :(

I am, too, and my appendages start to freeze and lock-up at temperatures that are comfortable for most people. If I ever have to work in an office that doesn’t allow a space heater I seriously don’t know what I’d do.

Do you have Reynaud’s phenomenon? I have that and my feet and fingers will go numb if the temp drops even to comfortable 60s. My husband teases me about what I think is too cold for ocean temp but if it’s less than like 80 degrees, it’s kind of painful.

Well my school is year-around so I have been back to school for 2 weeks of prep and now my second week teaching. My brief vacation this summer did take me though Portland. I was abel to time it (no puppy until the trip home) so that I could visit Perfume House and Fumerie. The first is always great and since I was there at opening, the man working seemed very chatty and shared many fragrances. I could only buy some scented bath gel due to budget but tried a Van Clef and Arpels (spelling?) exclusive? that was great and may be mine one day. At Fumerie I was also the first customer of the day. A very different layout and smaller. The lady who owns it was there and really went above and beyond in sharing scents. I was able to find a small travel size that I could afford. Fig related, very green and I cannot for the life of me remember the name! Highly recommend seeing both. Probably good I have a dog and can;t park in warm weather or I would spend much too much time and money at both of them.

Add another birthday to the list…today is my 40th. I haven’t decided if I’m okay with it or not. I am however overjoyed to be on vacation with my family this week at my parents’ house in northern Michigan. I’m getting a lot of help with baby Jack (who turned three last week btw, I guess I need a new name for him), so I’m catching up on some much needed sleep. Jack was diagnosed with Autism last winter, and we’ve been doing nonstop therapies since then to get him ready for preschool, which starts next Monday. I’ve been running myself ragged all summer. I didn’t think I looked or felt 40 a few months ago, but now…

SOTD is Gucci Rush. I bought my first bottle on my first trip to Vegas when I was 23. It is bringing back the wonderful memories of my vibrant, energetic, optimistic youth, and the battle scars I earned back then. If I wear it long enough I just might feel like going clubbing. :)

    Happy Tuesday (?!?!) everyone!

I de-aged myself when signing up for stuff…like Sephora. These stores don’t need to know my real birthdate or age since there is a tendency to box in people of the same age AND real birthdays could be used for social engineering. It also extends the birthday celebration :-)

The preschool teachers we had made a profound difference in my kids learning capabilities. Also adding that Northern Michigan is such a great place for a vacation. Enjoy your day!

Happy Birthday Lucy!!! What an amazing husband, such a thoughtful gift, I love that he snuck (sneaked?) out to Barneys :)

Well, I am 42 and I have a 5 year old named Jack – who has some learning differences, I am you in 2 years, ha. He calls himself “Jacky”. It took us 10 days to decide on his name after he was born, we used to call him “Baby Mango” (from when he was the size of a mango, in utero. I also have a 3 year old who calls all babies she sees “Lucy” :)

I am trying to take better care of my skin, better late than never, and sort of religiously following Victoria’s recommendations (from Bois de Jasmin) even though I think we have different skin types. I think taking good care of yourself helps in dealing with the psychological effects of the inevitability of aging.

Thank you, kpaint, for saying this!!! From how I experience my body (it certainly may not be true for everyone!), I wish people could have been more honest with me when I turned 40, and just said how much it sucks. It really does! Not because anything else but, as you said it, “everything is harder”!

Hey LUUUUCEEEEE, Happy Birthday. Good luck to you and baby Jack! My mom still calls a friend’s daughter baby Catherine even though she is now 15 years old :-). The name stuck because my nephew used to call her that to make sure that EVERYONE knows he is NOT the baby anymore and that he is a big boy!

    Triple strength coffee.
Workout in the high humidity backyard.
Watched a bird catch a cicada midair and gobble it down.
Beautiful rainbow last week after Friday’s storms.
    Life is good.
    Santal Blanc Serge Lutens.
Reminds me of the pencil sharpener by the cubby hole in elementary school, where everyone stored their coats and lunches.

Wearing a light spritz of Le Labo’s new Mousse de Chene. Disappointing. Smells linear, like very dark green leaves. Not very ambitious or even outright nice-smelling.

Hmmmm. That was one of 2 exclusive samples I bought. I liked it a lot the first time I tried it in the store. On second testing I agree, very linear and there’s a detectable amount of one of those screechy, woody ambers that I didn’t notice the first time. I do like what it smells like overall but it almost smells like what the cumulative smell of all Le Labos might smell like. And the color I imagined was a darkish sage green.

We went to see Midnight Oil last night and clearly I’m not as bouncy and fit as its 65 yo front man as we got home after midnight and I feel wrecked this morning. But it was a great show, so worth it.
Back to school theme is: summer vacation is over so time to start studying my own collection and the freewheeling spending will come to a close. I managed to accumulate a lot of decants and a couple of small bottles this summer. In tribute I’m wearing my recent acquisition of a Le Labo Baie Rose 26 sample (12 bucks for a measly sample?!) Anyway, it’s quite nice- kind of light and deep at the same time. It’s not the rose to end all roses but I will enjoy the sample.

They’re doing one big tour- not sure they’ve toured much otherwise. The crowd was funny, though. I felt like I was at a convention for bald men, lol. I wonder if they shaved their heads just for the concert so they cloud look like Peter Garrett. He’s really fun to watch. I love his quirky, convulsive dance style dance style!

too bad about Emeraude and Chantilly as well…I wore them both back in the day…..late 1970s before reformulations…well, I won’t go out of my way to sniff them as it will probably make me very sad.

Ok next time there is any sort of sale and you are on the fence I promise to push you in the direction of making that purchase :)

I am kinda feeling the same way…tired of hoarding the stuff I really love so I am trying to wear what I love first but still leave time and skin for sampling…I also have a goal of spending more time with just one fragrance instead of flitting all over the place or wearing 20 fragrances at the same time (my reeking havoc a la Holly days may be numbered!) if that makes any sense. Last year I took Angela’s challenge to try to finish one bottle which lead me to wearing Assam of India for 7 weeks straight and it was a very interesting exercise to say the least.

7 weeks! It’s been a long time since I wore the same fragrance for that long. The thing I find I am missing is “this time of my life” association. Since I wear something different every day, no one scent attaches itself to the moment (I really hope I’m making sense) I might just start with 2 or 3 days in a row.

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            22 August 2017 at 4:18 pm

yes..I completely hear you on that…years ago I always had 7 or so fragrances in my rotation…I would alter them from time to time but then there were those that were seasonal…so something like vintage Calyx I associate with summers in my 20s….I miss having those associations as well…..

6 hours in, both are still easily detectable.
The EDT is more iris and labdanum.
EDP is more present (which you would expect from an EDP) but is throwing off more patch, rose and ylang. Also, the EDP strikes me as somehow flatter.

Disclaimer – my skin loves Chanel and holds on to their scents fiercely. YMMV

I received my Tauer mag in the mail yesterday, along with the sample of the new Flash fragrance: Patch Flash!

In the back of the mag, these notes were listed: spices, warm flowers, leather, patchouli and benzoin.

I’m not good at all with describing notes, so I’ll admit that up front. The patchouli is light and dry at first, not sweet/cloying like a headshop patch. It is arid, like you’d expect from Andy. There is something a bit sharp at the 15 minute mark, but it goes away. An hour in, it softens and feels more unisex. It lasted almost 8 hours on me, and was a lightly spicy skin scent when I went to bed.

This would be nice as for layering, and lasted well in the oppressive heat and humidity yesterday. Today, I’m in Noir Epices thanks to our lovely flopper, so I’m staying with the dry spicy theme.

    Y’all have a good one!

Une Fleur de Cassie, from a decant. To my nose it opens similar to Clive Christian No. 1 for Women – which I love but will never ever buy a bottle – then UFdC dries down to almost nothing. Really surprised by how short-lived it is. An hour?

As a kid, back to school always meant getting new stuff. New clothes, new class supplies….I LOVED picking out a new trapper-keeper and the new boxes of crayons with their perfect tips. I thought I might wear Luctor et Emergo for the play-do note, but alas, it seems the bottle has gone off…which almost brought a tear to my eye as this was my first niche purchase approx. 10 years ago!! So instead I wore something brand new–my Dryad that came yesterday. 10 years ago I probably would have found this weird, pickle-y and outdated. Now I just adore it. Amazing how our palates change over the years!

Be sure to give it some time! The drydown is totally different from the opening on me. I can’t even describe the drydown–I’m not well versed in vintages so maybe it’s the magic of oakmoss and I’m just now understanding it? More investigation may be required, but for now, I just know I love it!!

Hey kelly 4, thanks for your comment yesterday. I don’t know how you do it. I have a niece who was born with the worst extreme of a super rare disorder that her doctors said was “incompatible with life”. Thank goodness my sister worked for a pharmaceutical company that agreed to waive the $2mm lifetime cap which she never had to get to as the orphan drug company ended up donating the drugs. I am happy to note that my niece is now 25 years old and is a hard working road warrior CPA. She will never be cured but there have been advances in the medical field dealing with her type of disorder and she is careful to not get into a situation that could turn into a medical emergency.

Hi hajusuuri, That’s really encouraging about your niece and sister. I’m glad she’s doing so well. I bet you are a fun aunt and keep her smelling good!
Recently my 15 year old son and I have been looking into a gene editing program called crispr. The boys cardiologist told us about it. Also my son is starting a foundation called Destroy Duchenne. He has 4 board members and an attorney helping him. He’s a 4.6 student in the international baccalaureate program at his high school. His dream is to go to Stanford University. We’re reaching out to people in the muscular dystrophy community to find out any new treatments and ways to prolong his life. He wants to find a cure so badly and is definitely smart enough to do it. We’re just trying to find a way to give him that chance.

My husband is a professor, so he’s back to school this week. This leaves me in charge of our ongoing insurance claim from some storm damage earlier this month (I work at home, so this stuff tends to fall to me anyway). As a result, I’ll be enjoying assertive perfumes all week – today’s pick is Calyx.

Very good morning, all. Thank you all so much for your condolences yesterday. You know, I kinda thought that post might be my last: I was inching towards just giving up perfume-thinking altogether, because it seemed simply too much effort. At the back of my mind, though, I knew I was very tired from getting up every hour for four nights to treat Dakkie, and I suspected that with enough sleep, I might find my equilibrium again. And then, your kind thoughts were so gentle and sincere that I knew I would miss this community, so last night I gave up on the theatre, went to bed at 8, and here I am today, wearing Oeillet Bengale, because who wouldn’t if they could, and putting a foot forward, even if it’s not quite my best foot.

I really love this perfume. It’s astonishingly carnation-like, considering it doesn’t contain carnation, and it’s very pretty. I don’t know that I would say it’s complex or sophisticated, but for sheer untrammelled prettiness, it can’t be beaten. I’m wearing warm colours today, a tunic in a vaguely tribal print, whatever “tribal” means in fashion –it certainly isn’t remotely Maori — and the warmth of the perfume seems to match the colours and intensify them further. Hmmmm….that might mean I’m wearing too much perfume. Oh well, there are worse things to inflict on the world than two sprays too many of Oeillet Bengale.

Eric has just presented himself to me, along with the Pink Fur of Destiny. That means he has Things to Discuss–why I don’t stay home and deliver all-day tummy rubs, why he can’t live exclusively on chicken, and how come he’s smaller than Titus and Alexander, even though he’s a week older. Difficult questions to answer, but he’s a serious kitten, slightly worried all the time, and it behoves me to enter into discourse with him. I think I had better set my day in motion. Be well and stay fabulously fragrant, all.

Late to the party today. SOTD is sweat and road dirt from hiking this morning and biking this afternoon. Will soon be hitting the shower and then will wear PdE Corsica Furiosa because I love it, in all of its stages, from first spritz (with the BEST spray mechanism in the WORLD!) to the soft dry down hours and hours later. I feel refreshed just thinking of it????

Christened the bike today and somehow managed to lose braking power halfway through my ride and had to apply the Fred Flintstone Braking System for the rest of the ride, which is kinda sketchy on hilly terrain. But, it felt really good to get back on a bike! Amazing how long it takes to get into shape and how quickly you become a floppy couch potato mess!

The exlipse yesterday was absolutely amazing! So happy I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

It is infuriating to me how it takes 6 weeks to get into any semblance of shape and 1 week to get out. If exercise is so good for you why doesn’t the body hang on to muscles more? You smell great. Can’t wait to get back in range of my CF decant again in October, you are giving me huge lemmings.

i’m wearing a heavy layer of KORRES OLIVE VERBENA BODY CREAM which has a potent sillage. i’m very special about verbena scent and this one is just great, very green and realistic but with a citrus kick which makes it smell modern and oh so refreshing. the kind of scented cream that makes me feel clean and energized. it is so pretty it reminds me of annick goutal’s grassy florals.

Crazy busy, but had a goodbye lunch with some friends on Saturday and ran into Sephora next door while I waited for them. I’ve been working my way through some Hermes lately (it seems I like quite a lot of their stuff). I got more EdM, 24 Faubourg, and Un Jardin Sur Le Nil.

I wore 24 Faubourg Sunday and upon first spray I was not sure if I liked it- seemed musty to me. Then it dried a bit and I could not stop smelling myself. I enjoyed it enough that I repeated it again yesterday. Not sure I need a full bottle but I certainly am going to enjoy this sample.

Today is the Un Jardin Sur Le Nil. Now THIS I could see buying a decant or bottle of. Where has this been my whole summer?! I smell great, if I do say so myself!

Hot, humid and rainy. Went with Angéliques sous la Pluie.

Robin, even though you weren’t trying, you did in fact match a writer with a perfume! Writer Denyse Beaulieu was the inspiration and muse for Séville à l’Aube which she worked on with Bertrand Duchaufour.

Episode 2 of Back to School. In episode 1 our hero was surprised to win a scholarship to an ancient and exclusive school – especially as he hadn’t applied for one.

SOTD is Meme Paris “French Leather”. Our hero is feeling more and more excited as the first day at this mysterious school draws nearer. The days are spent in a flurry of buying the books and equipment listed on embossed notepaper. Today he’s buying his leather schoolbag. He’s not sure he’s ever noticed this shop before, and wonders why a leather goods shop would have quite so many roses, spilling from vases or lining old display cases. And the rose tattoo doesn’t entirely suit the pretty shop assistant, while her bright glinting eyes and red lips in turn don’t quite match the deep voice. If he wasn’t so busy glancing at the young assistant, he might have noticed the pair of gnarled old sailors studying him with cool appraisal. Turn around, fella! No, he’s already off out the door, mind racing. But as fast as he moves now, his fate will catch up with him…

Notes are lime, pink pepper, clary sage, juniper, rose water, cedar, resin, vetiver, white musk and suede. Or so says Memo. On my skin the powdery roses smother everything in their path.

Yes! Perhaps because in so many books, movies, and tv shows they’re the setting for all manner of horrors and nastiness? I’m anticipating that by the end of the week, the hero will suffer some kind of beat-down! ;) (not sure what perfume would go with that, or whether one would want one that would…)

Running late today. However, I can vouch that the Wegman’s by me DID have the Fentiman’s Rose Lemonade (one of Robin’s recent Lemmings of The Day). I tried it with a couple of friends. They both said that they did noticeably taste rose in with the lemonade. Me, I got a nicely tart, not too sweet lemonade with the barest hint of rose in it. It is worth seeking out, if you like fizzy soft drinks of that type.

SOTD = the very last of my sample of Alaia Paris EdP. Good thing I found a nicely priced bottle on one of the discount sites. :)

Went back to school this a.m. in Bois des Iles [Perfume Education 101: Classics]. Sprayed myself down with Dame Perfumery Orange Blossom this afternoon [Perfum Education 101: Soliflores]. If I were in the market for an OB perfume, I would choose this one. Straight-up orange blossom, and a very pretty one.

SOTD = Annick Goutal Heure Exquise EDP

Very nice! Smells like a combination of No.19, Iris 39, then add a smidgen of violets to mimic slightly piwdery vintage. The only connection to school is tbat Heure Exquise exudes old school perfumery in a good way.

I am skipping Commuting Woes today, ah no wait, yes I do!

    Commuting Woes No. 384:

Don’t you hate it when people behind you walkthisclose to you? It’s not like doing so will make me walk any faster if there is someone directly in front of me. Distance, people, Distance! A former co-worker with whom I had lunch last week said she was so sick of the personal space offender in a crowded train that she once remarked loudly “the only person who came this close to me was someone with whom I had a sexual relationship”. She immediately got her personal space back.

Distance, space???? Back to my commute today a very young, heavy girl forced her way to sit in the narrowest gap between me and of course the person next to me. Annoying and abusive? Yes. But the worst part was that the skin of her arm touching me was like the roughest sandpaper ever. I never experienced that. Her skin did not look dry at all. Very weird. Since she was playing games with her cell phone her arm continuously moved. Lots of anxiety grew up on me to the point like in a matter of 20 seconds I almost got a panick attack. I basically jumped from my seat and the rest of my 20 minute commute I was standing. I preferred that. I just could not take it.

Heure Exquise EdP is gorgeous. I am wearing now and it is a real pleasure!

When we meet one day, I will tell you my puffy coat story.

I would have done what you did. In the hottest days of the summer, I can’t bear sitting hip to hip with some people. I have a tabloid or magazine at the ready that I would put between me and the person next to me and explain that I don’t want to sweat into them.

Ooh good one! But might not be of much use here, the concept of personal space is different here in South America (and I suspect in some parts of Asia) never mind the metro.

I have had extremely close encounters on the Paris metro during rush hour, including one time when I discovered I had flattened my backside into some poor guy in the intense crush, which I didn’t even notice until he politely tried to extract himself to exit at his stop. I thought I was pressed up against the wall of the train.

My personal space pet peeve is people who ram you in the rear with their shopping cart at the supermarket. Do they think they are going to get through the line any faster by doing that?

Eeeek, well, the crush of bodies could be brutal and there are many times when body parts can be mistaken for objects being carried by the commuter.
