A very happy Fugly Friday to you! Our community project for today: wear a perfume you own (or just like) despite the ugly bottle. Thanks to Nebbe for the suggestion!
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm wearing a tiny dab of The Voice of Reason by Lush. Even the Beat poets and musicians who inspired it would probably prefer a slightly more appealing bottle. Doesn't that bottle look like it holds cough syrup, or maybe an emetic? (But I'll also add that I like that Lush uses unappealing packaging, and I would be very disappointed if they stopped.)
Reminder: on 8/25 we're doing Back to school... wear a fragrance that fits the theme, for whatever reason.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
I am wearing the incredibly groovy disco ball perfume that is Rykiel Woman by Sonia Rykiel. Everytime I see its Studio 54-worthy bottle it cracks me up! The perfume is actually an amped-up Barbara Bui, musky and rather nice actually.
I like that one and have a mini. I love the bottle. Groovy is right and you smell great!
Elisa P, I have a full bottle of that in my cabinet that really needs to make its way out – it smells terrible on me (kinda like bug spray). It was a blind buy (I know, I know). Let’s talk in September, at the Freebiemeet!
That’s so sweet of you but, honestly, it’s way to close to Barbara Bui which I already own. I have the 7.5 ml mini of Rykiel which will probably last me a long time. I’m sure someone else would be interested. It’s a great scent!
Just looked this one up…oh yeah! What a great box too! The ads look like the box was inverted to make a nice little stage for the bottle.
Yes, and that bottle’s gonna jump right up on that box and start singing “Stayin’ Alive”!
Gres Cabaret for me today- love the scent, hate the (ugly and cumbersome) bottle.
I really like Cabaret.
Just look this one up too, I think the bottle is kind of cute – it could be worse – there could be legs involved 🙂
Oooh, excellent choice! Great scent and such an oddly cheap-looking and clownish bottle
I’ve got a decant of this that I never wear (I actually don’t think I’ve ever worn it.) Must rectify!
You smell great! You mean the newer, slightly flat bottle? It’s not very exciting, is it?
Nothing fugly in my house so I am testing Tom Ford Noir on one wrist and Noir Extreme on the other before passing it on to younger male family member.
I love both of those. You smell wonderful!
I like them both (although they did not last very long on my skin) and I am pretty sure the younger male in my family is going to love them 🙂
Oh and thank you for saying I smell great !
Fugly x 2: I’m wearing a dash o’ Stash with a spritz of Covet as a topper. (If only Covet’s cap weren’t so… PLASTIC…)
I have not smelled covet, but that bottle is so ugly it actually makes me want to avoid it – how is the juice?
TBH, I have some trouble smelling SJP’s perfumes. I’m nearly anosmic to Lovely, and I can’t smell many of the listed notes in Covet or Stash. To me, Covet is all about (white) chocolate and lemon, backed by greenery, while Stash is heavy on the frankincense. I like Covet and can wear it on its own, though I don’t enjoy Stash much by itself. The layering of the two really works for me, though, and I’m grateful to the NSTer who first suggested it!
Oh, thanks for this – I have stash – and I really love it – it would not have occurred to me to layer them, I might have to pick up some covet – sounds great 🙂
Scent twins with Covet.
Ooh, Covet is nice. I must get a new bottle of it before it’s too late. Thank you for the reminder!
Waving back to you!
I considered Covet!
The perfume itself is interesting and wearable, but the bottle looks like a reject from a nursery school tub o’ toys, or maybe Happy Meal prizes.
Ha – I actually kind of love both the bottle and the color! (And the fragrance inside.)
I think it’s almost a great bottle. I even think the cap is almost great. A little more money on execution and it could have been something with the whimsical feel of MJ Daisy…
I feel like the COLOR of Covet is a huge part of the visual unappeal.
I liked the Covet scent, but hated the bottle so much that I never purchased it.
I’m in Grès Cabochard, some modern incarnation or other — I like it well enough but I bet I would have liked the pre-1984 version a lot better. The bottle isn’t quite fugly but it’s an odd thing: an octagonal bottle with a black cap edged in gold, very modern and sleek, and then this frosted-glass bow stuck to the front (I mean it’s actually moulded into the glass but still, it clearly doesn’t belong).
Agree with you on the Lush packaging, Robin: the only one of their scents I own is a 10-mL spray of Lust and the label is just ridiculous, like something out of a Tijuana bible (don’t Google that), but that’s part of the fun.
Hahahaha. Never heard of them. Etsy (no affiliation) has a lot of those. ????
That whole series actually makes me appreciate the plain black glass bottles, which is what my Silky Underwear is packaged in.
You smell great!
Tijuana bible.
Thanks pyramus , I learned something new today !
😉
Ok, you made me look. Who knew?
Estée Lauder Knowing. All of the perfume bottles I have are nice so not participating today. Maybe the only “fugly” would be the sprayer bulb on Guerlain SDV since it puffs out such a small amount of liquid. In the department store yesterday, I heard an announcement for the new Gabrielle and to sign up to reserve a bottle.
Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder because I always thought the perfume bottle for Knowing was astoundingly beautiful. Maybe not so much the EDP, but that jagged pebble of a bottle tied up with a gold cord? Gorgeous. Lauder has a pretty high batting average over the years: I can’t think of many of their bottles that are complete duds, except maybe the asymmetrical Intuition, both men’s and women’s, which I hated on sight.
Found a vintage perfume bottle of Knowing online, and it is pretty. I do appreciate EL’s price points and can buy a large bottle (over 2 oz) for under $100. I guess they can offer those prices since they have the revenue from the cosmetics/skin care.
I think the original EL bottles are really nice. I don’t like the newer versions that all look the same though.
You smell wonderful!
No, no, no, no, no, no, NO !
I will be the petulant two-year-old today!
😀
No fugly, Hypnotic Poison, one of my favorites because life is short.
No good.
Contender for worst 2017 release, J’adore In Joy. Went to the mall for a roast pork sandwich for dinner yesterday.
There was a tester, so I sprayed some cards. A lot!
LOLOLOL
The distraught SA popped up in my peripheral vision, ‘That really is enough…….”
I know, but I want to analyze the structure and parse the entire olfactory pyramid.
I thought her head would explode.
I continued to spray, the bottle tantalizingly out of her grasp.
Cards dripping, I handed her the bottle.
Thanks!
Salty, neroli, but the worst faux peach note I’ve encountered.
Needed 0fat Greek yogurt for my spinach salad.
400 boxes of Sweetzels @ the entrance to Acme. The manager was supervising.
It’s still August, I say.
She shrugged.
No ! Summer never go away!
😉
Triple strength coffee.
Workout.
Carpe Diem.
Peace.
😀
???? You rock!
ditto!!!!!!!!!!
Yes to all of this.
Ditto!!!!!!!!!
I can’t believe she would say that! Lol. Come to my store, Bear, we let people do whatever they want…. And they do.:)
Yes, she was quite distressed. I wondered if her surname was Macy or Dior ?
LOLOLOL
😉
Love this!!!
I am reviled at my local department store for spritzing Youth Dew. What else is it for?
Ha. Wasn’t the original story of Youth Dew being spilled by Mrs. Lauder in the store to attract buyers? Or something like that? Times have changed.
Times have changed indeed..the SAs are beyond stingy these days!
Never heard that – if it’s not true it’s a great story!
The SAs in my local department store hide the Aromatic Elixir tester because they all hate AE. Could be the “oh-no-somebody-spritzed-Youth-Dew-and-that’s-all-we-will-smell-for-the-next-three-weeks” reaction.
Ha! I have a fantasy about getting a part-time job in the beauty department, but I’m pretty sure it would be a nightmare.
ha! you are probably right!
Your (writing) style reminds me of Adrian McGinty, Irish writer and hero.
Had to Google him.
Thank you !
His books look interesting!
I don’t want summer to end though I could eat Sweetzels any day of the year. I love spice cookies. 🙂
LOLing over your SA story. 🙂
Did you spray it on your skin? Go back cause you need to! You can’t leave the job half done .
I actually like the perfume and find it easier to wear than the original …it is like salty rock melon with a hint of jasmine. I’ve worn it this winter and it reminds me of frost. It is a little insipid though. Not a patch on Hypnotic Poison
Next time I eat a roast pork sandwich, I will. ;D
Hilarious Bear! Thanks for a good laugh! 😀 😀 😀
Since I drink double-strength decaf *yawns* every morning, sometimes it takes me a while to follow along. LOL. Re-read after caffeinated tea, and I’m with you all the way.
I tried J’Adore from a sample recently and it also had one of the nastiest peach notes I’ve smelled. I couldn’t believe I used to wear it. I’ll chalk it up to reformulation.
Had to look up Sweetzels, but I join you in protest! NO NO NO NO NO!
Thanks for the <3 Everyone !!!
I took today’s theme and reinterpreted it partly because I didn’t really do the bottle porn Friday well. So I’m wearing Foin Fraîchement Coupé by Oriza L. Legrand. If you are into tassels this is the line for you 😉
Better late than never!
I love that one! And, yes, I’m into tassels. I wish their Heliotrope Blanc came with one.
I like tassels! I was so sad when I ordered a new bottle of Jolie Madame and it came without the beautiful lavender one.
As much as I thing than Huitieme Art Shermine is an adorable scent, I highly detest the black cyclops bottle Pierre Guillaume decided to use to pack this line.
This is as fugly as I was ale to go today.
House twins!
???? hey twin
Shermine!!! my best friend gave me a decant and I drained it so incredibly fast! You are smelling great, Lucas!!!!!
I love the scent and a decant from a friend is almost empty. But I don’t want that bottle, haha!
wow wow wow, that is a distinctive bottle!
It is unique but meh.
In real that bottle feels like shampoo packaging.
I forgot about mine. fugly bottle.
No Friday project for me, as I’m continuing my Coqui Coqui research (bottles are simple and nice): Agave today. Never smelled the plant, I’d say it doesn’t smell woody as the fragrance does 😉
Any so far that you would buy?
The bottles of Nicki Minaj perfume don’t do her justice at all. I had to wear Pink because the that’s the bottle I found – the fragrance has minimal sillage. Definitely distinctive vanity decor 🙂 .
I was thinking lots of those bottles arranged artistically would make some good installation piece.
Yes- arranged with the stark Chanel bottles 😉 .
That could be fun/possibly creepy. I had forgotten exactly what the bottles looked like so I had to go look them up. And now I’m imagining a room completely lined with them. 😀
I kinda think it might be fun to do a series of very close-up photos. Almost makes me want to buy one and try it.
Great idea! We should collaborate on a project ???? Some sort of feminist art piece…
Yes! I can dust off that art degree and put it to use..lol
Terra-cotta Minaj
Those Nicki Minaj bottles would give me the creeps, all lined up in a row… Nightmares for weeks.
oh mals, you crack me up 🙂
I bought my daughter Pink Friday, and she promptly recolored the hair with various colors of nail polish.
Great imagination! Does she like perfume?
She likes it sometimes. Her favorites right now are Britney Spears Fantasy and Tommy Girl. She is much more into cosmetics and nails.
I like Fantasy and Tomm Girl, and I’m an old. ????
That is about the only bottle that I could think of that would fit into the fugly category…..
Good choice!
Excellent bottle choice. I’ve never sniffed the actual juice, precisely because of the bottles. Will have to remedy.
Don’t have any fugly bottles, so I went utilitarian with Kyoto.
I actually love those bottles.
Second!
I don’t think they’re fugly per se, but remind me more of a hairspray bottle, not something to house beautiful perfume!
I’m in Eau de Hadrien, from the feminine-style bottle – not ugly, or even fugly, just not to my taste. Too …. frilly or something. Plus, the detached label bothers me. But the fragrance is just about perfect.
Ahhh… you smell like summer!
A kind friend gave me AG Mandragore deliberately choosing the dude bottle, little knowing that I thought actually thought the girly purple bottle was quite cute. It stays in the fridge to refresh me in the summer.
I went through a whole bottle of that during a few heat waves, and now I miss it. Must see what it’s selling for on the ‘bay!
I thought about a femme-bottle Goutal today too, and agree with you – there’s nothing WRONG with them, but they don’t do anything for me either.
*nods*
You smell great!
That’s pretty much how I feel about the AG’s “girl” bottles too.
Ah,but I adored those bottles in the mid to late 1990s and had about 10 or so empty ones until I decided to “purge” and threw them all out 🙁
I like them too. Plus the cap made a satisfying sound when removed and replaced. I don’t mind a minimalist aesthetic but really enjoy the ultra femme too.
Most of my bottles are just average and functional with a few exceptions (Rose de Petra, Noa, Lalique le Parfum, Loulou etc. which have some charm).
Like lucasai, I went with the black, frosted R2D2 of Huitieme Art Poudre de Riz. This sent really needs to be in the equally fugly pink Rosine Ballerina bottle with the embarrassing tutu.
“Beep-bee-bee-boop-bee-doo-weep!”
Ya, ugly bottle with a total mismatch to its contents. And “embarrassing” is exactly the right word for the Ballerina bottles!
The tutu bottles make me uncomfortable in the way that a beauty pageant for 6 year old girls does for some reason.
That tutu is disturbing.
The only seriously-tacky bottle I own is for That Slut Tocade, and it’s WAY too humid & hot to wear that today.
So I’m sampling: Aether Arts Love for 3 Oranges. I’m not generally a big citrus fan, but I like this. I like this very, very much.
Tocade is a good one! not only do I find the bottle ugly, it also feels like it has nothing to do with the perfume inside.
Yeah, major disconnect there.
The Tocade bottle is winner in the fugly category, that’s for sure!
OH yeah.
I’m so curious about the Aether Arts line. It’s one I’ve been meaning to sample for a long time. Have you tried any other of theirs?
No, this is the only one.
Update: it was gone less than 3 hours later. I do have scent-eating skin and did not apply heavily, but I could have wished for more longevity. I’ll try it again with a heavier application.
ha! Tocade was on my radar for today, too.
😀
I eyeballed it as well, but it is just too hot today. Bottle made me smile though!
I bought Tocade mostly for the bottle, which I love 😀 The minis are even more adorable. I find the chapeau cap very charming.
Wearing a single summer spritz of Bollywood or Bust, from the cheapo-looking 50 ml bottle with the angrily-scribbled wooden match on the front.
Whew, that is an aggressive looking match.
Hehe I thought of the Smell Bent bottles too, but I do enjoy the silly illustrations that go with each perfume.
You know what would have been perfect for today? That pinecone of a bottle, Rochas Man. I sold mine off a few years ago, but it’s freakishly cheap on FragranceNet these days- maybe it’s time to reconnect!
Pinecone? That’s not the first thing that came to mind when I saw the bottle. LOL.
Glad you said it first. I will just agree:)
Oh my! I had to look that one up. That *is* an interesting bottle. Ha!!
Uh, ya. Though on 2nd glance I saw a lava lamp.
oh lordie, this conversation cracked me up 🙂
LOL I looked it up, and I think my mind went the same place. Pinecone is a decidedly innocent interpretation.
That said, the fragrance does sound nice, though.
I’ve seen good reviews for it on YouTube.
It looks like a lava lamp to me.
I always saw a giant bullet, or suppository.
Or what everyone else is referring to……..
😉
Did not think of suppository when I saw that bottle, but now I can’t unsee that!
Sorry Jalapeno !!!! 😀
Ari, it looks like something you might imagine as an alien shuttle craft 😉 .
I have a bottle and a wear Rochas Man (or rocket man, as I sometimes think of it) regularly. (Lavender, vanilla, coffee. Marvellous!) I took the bottle into work once to show a younger colleague but she must have a cleaner mind than mine because I don’t think she got the joke. ????
It was finally a cool AM, so I said “Nope, nothing ugly for me today” and sprayed from my adored half bottle of Iris Ganache. I smell like Chocolate and Iris and unicorns…. 🙂
I never smelled this, but I want it from your description!
Lucky us! I also have a half bottle of IG. Why did they discontinue it??
Whyyyyyyy?!?!?!?
IG = my preciousssssssss
Mm, I have a bottle too…already halfway gone!
I asked my daughter to pick me out an ugly bottle for today, and she said they were all pretty, aawww…. So I tried to wear Hollywood Royal which really is awful. It also smells awful. I have a 5 oz bottle that I got during the liquidation for a dollar or so. I ended up wearing Alien essence absolute. I do not like this Alien bottle, it is to rounded at the bottom and looks out of place with the other flankers. The scent makes up for it. I smell pretty darn good.
Excellent choice, the Alien bottles make me nuts. They look like insects. So strange.
I planned to wear Eau d’Italie Sienne L’Hiver because that bottle is so… meh. BUT my air conditioner isn’t working and I needed something brighter and lighter so I am wearing MFK A La Rose. I wish I had thought of my daughter’s Kenzo World sample because that is one weird bottle…!
Kenzo World reminds me of Monsters, Inc.
“I’m always watching you, Wazowski. Always watching.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBs21CFBALI
???? Just this morning I made use of one of my favorites: “Put that thing back where it came from, or so help me!”
ha! I love that line too.
You smell lovely. Definitely not a fugly bottle.
Not fugly, strictly speaking, but I don’t care for it: that tall, orange, asymmetrical bottle of Kenzo Amour. Super awkward to store and use.
I like the Amour bottle but had a similar issue with my Flower Oriental – too tall for the shelf, I had to store it lying down!
Ya, my Kenzo Flower bottle sits out on my dresser year-in and year-out because it won’t fit anywhere else. You’d think I’d wear it more often since I see it every day but it’s just become part of the background and I rarely do.
I have the fuscia bottle and it’s the only one of 2 I have on my dresser, partly because I love it and the splash of color is great in my bedroom which is mostly grey, and because it doesn’t fit in the drawer.
Maybe that is their plan! Make it so tall you HAVE to display it. At least it’s opaque.
Probably, although I’m betting most of the perfume-buying market keeps their bottles on display, unboxed. The only people who “store” perfume are the likes of us weirdos.
My niece visited recently, walked into my bedroom and said, “Auntie KPaint, you have SO many bottles of perfume.” I sheepishly responded “uhhh, yaahh,” not admitting that it was just a handful of things I’d pulled out for the summer. And didn’t mention the drawers-full of bottles beneath the display.
Ha, whereas I have actually dragged people into my closet to be like BEHOLD MY STASH
HAHA! If her mother hadn’t been in tow I might have done the same thing! 🙂
Isn’t it the worst when family members judge you because of your perfume obsession?
Not really fugly but a bit OTT- SHL 777 Taklamakan.
Oh. Hmm. Ya, that is not an attractive bottle.
Ha, also in SHL777 today (dont see it mentioned a lot btw) and I made a similar remark about the bottle.
How is Taklamakan? Do you like it?
I like it. A LOT????
Today I discovered that I am pretty forgiving on bottles! I couldn’t find one single one that I hated. I considered a Smell Bent, but just as Robin feels about Lush, I actually really like the way they package – it goes with their feel of being about not-too-serious, creative juices. I considered plasticky Omnia or Silences which looks a little ridic in mini form, but eventually went with White Shoulders, which I own in a mini shaped about like angels’ wings with a round gold cap. I’m enjoying it because I so rarely go for a light “pretty” floral, and it makes a nice change.
I turn out to be pretty forgiving too, I had a hard time making a choice.
I am wearing Omnia! The bottle feels horrible and it is inconvenient to use.
Many thanks to you experienced curly girls who imparted their wisdom upon me yesterday. It is appreciated as I need all the advice I can get!
SOTD is Mon Guerlain
Ooh, I missed this yesterday so I hope you don’t mind if I add my 2 cents! The best thing you can do IMO is go to a Deva trained stylist (I’m not affiliated I swear). It tends to be pricey but there are 2 advantages. 1. they are trained to cut curls and 2. at a first visit they will usually teach you everything you need to know about caring for your curls. A lot of which will overlap with the advice from yesterday but it’s really a worthwhile primer. They will also try to sell you on a lot of product; my PERSONAL view is that the Deva gel is super worth it but the conditioner can be swapped out for other silicone-free conditioner washes as you like.
And my own advice, which I don’t THINK anybody flat-out said yesterday, is never brush your hair – the only time a comb should go through your hair is when it is soaking wet with conditioner. (Though as I’ve gotten more accepting of frizz I do sometime brush when I am in the mood for a giant poofball but that’s kind of an advanced move to be done with caution.)
I will second the don’t brush your hair.
Thank you for chiming in! Since this is all new to me I need all the recommendations I can get. Which Deva gel do you like?
Hm the names seem to have changed – I used to like Arc Angel for the shiny really defined individual curls, and regular Angel for a slightly softer look. I’m not sure what corresponds to that now, I think I’m probably using Ultra Defining Gel
I’ll second the recommendation of a Deva trained stylist. My hair is super thick and curly, and the fact that my stylist cut my hair when it was dry made a huge difference. Because of how thick my hair is, I’m not a huge fan of the gel (my hair requires too much product in order to get sufficient hold, so it ends up feeling gross), but I bet it’s awesome for less unruly hair. Personally, I use mousse, but my favorite was discontinued, so I don’t have a good recommendation yet.
I used to like the ouidad mousse when I could find it at winners (Canadian tj max), but would love a good curly mousse recco, too.
What styling products have you tried? Any I should particularity avoid? My hair is not super curly, at least not yet. It’s pretty soft, medium thickness, and the curls are a mixture of loose spirals and waves. I can blow it straight easily but now that I’ve discovered it’s new magical powers I don’t want to!
Goodness, I’ve tried sooo many things, so I don’t even know where to start!
I have small, tight curls, so this might be too heavy for your hair, but I like the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus line. I also like Kinky-Curly line, and Redken Curvaceous Ringlet Anti-Frizz Perfecting Lotion.
And I’m obsessed with L’Oreal Everstyle Alcohol-Free
Curl Activating Mousse, but I can’t find it anymore. I’ve tried L’Oreal Air Dry It Ruffled Body Mousse, and it’s fine, but I don’t love it. I like their Wave Swept Spray, though.
I find that Deva gel feels gross AT FIRST, but once you let it dry and then scrunch it a little it feels very soft and natural to me.
I have a stylist who does curls really well (it’s her favorite hair to cut, and she cuts everyone in my family, all curlies) but I’ve always wondered why she doesn’t do it dry.
I’m not a fan of gel of any kind, but I know a lot of curlies use it. I used mousse as a teen, when my hair looked amazing all the time with very limited fussing and zero rules (seriously, I think my hair has aged alongside its owner.)
My hair is very fine but densely packed and very unruly and frizz-prone. It needs weight, and a combo of leave-in, oil, and curl cream did the trick for me. The specific products was actually less important than the other components of my routine.
Robin – I am learning so much from today’s post – including a new vocabulary word “emetic”.
It’s fun to be able to participate visually, since I have no idea what all of these fragrances smell like!
I think many home medicine cabinets used to include a bottle of Ipecac? But they don’t recommend using it for emergency cases of poisoning any more, so probably it is now a pretty useless vocabulary word 🙂
I remember having ipecac in the medicine cabinet when I was a kid, but I haven’t seen it in years. Never needed to use it, fortunately.
I had some in the cabinet when my son was a baby, and now I can’t even remember why! Probably just my own obsessive tendencies?? Threw it away when it expired.
I’m sure it will show up in a novel, and I won’t have to look it up in the dictionary – time saved! 🙂
Yep in Anne of Green Gables if I remember correctly in a pivotal scene.
Ipecac will never be a useless vocabulary word as long as scrabble exists as a game!
I also don’t have any bottles I find fugly, just boring. And I admit that I forgot about today’s project, and was more focused on weather (oppressively humid) and my long-planned art museum outing to sketch with a friend this afternoon. Chose FM Iris Poudré, from my dull travel-size atomizer.
Now it turns out that the sketching trip has been postponed (the museum is an hour’s deive each way, and it’s much more fun with my friend, so I don’t want to go by myself), so I am using the time to work from home on mundane logistical tasks. But I still smell good, even if the only one to appreciate it is me.
Ha, yes, I have TONS of boring bottles!
I am in Lilac Love today. I am actually not a fan of the Amouage packaging, particularly their women’s scents. I do like some of the men’s packaging. The clear bottles are okay, but I do not liked the colored ones, especially this lilac. So probably not fugly to some, but definitely to me! Additionally, this scent is not my fav either…
That’s so funny, I love the opaque bottles!
I mostly like them, especially the dark colors but really dislike the pink/purple ombré for Myths I think it is. It looks like it should be a Barbie perfume.
Ha! Just goes to show you beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder! For instance, I see some people saying the Byredo bottles are ugly, but I love their simplicity!
Yeah, I’m not terribly fond of the colored ones from Amouage, either. (Except the Lyric one because I love red.) That’s why I’m thankful for Gold’s bottle…not that I have a FB yet.
And I love the red orange one for Bracken Woman but the color does not fit the aesthetics of the perfume…I think it should have been a light forest green.
I am with you! I find em weird and a bit tacky. They look like bottles you can find in the corner a cheap ‘bazaar’ shop, next to the kitchen utensils and the hair colour products and fake nails – if that makes any sense. 🙂
If you interpret fugly as ridiculously inconvenient, then I should go with Roberto Cavalli Oro. The bottle is the skyscraper of perfume bottles. Its height makes it a problem to store and leads to it being knocked over every time I have it out. Love the scent, though.
Scent twins!
Yes! The bottle I once had permanently lived on my dresser with Kenzo Flower.
Agree about Oro! That’s strictly a cold weather scent for me, though.
The Oro bottle is tbe worst in terms of functionality.
Yup. I decant it into a travel spray just so I can keep the bottle in the box. Otherwise I’d have broken at least one bottle by now.
I looked over all my bottles this morning, and I don’t think I have any fuglies among them.
I’m wearing Cartier Baiser Vole. I wore this last night when I attended a champagne pairing dinner, and I could still smell it on my hair this morning. I sprayed a little more on today.
Oooohhh champagne pairing dinner, that sounds fabulous, please tell us more! I would love to hear about the menu and pairings!
🙂
It started with a pairing of squash ravioli with crispy prosciutto paired with Chandon Blanc De Blancs, then mushroom soup with truffle flan paired with Veuve Clicquot Brut. The main course was steak paired with Ruinart Rose (so delicious!) and dessert was Raspberry sorbet with fresh whipped cream paired with Veuve Clicquot Demi-Sec (my favorite champagne of the night).
Mmmmmmm sounds divine, my mouth is watering! I love anything sparkling but usually go with the CA sparkling wines instead of champagne, I’ll have to seek those out! A champagne flight might be in order and sounds like fun 🙂
Slurp!
BV – that’s a great bottle.
I know! Its fun to open and close.
The Veuve Demi-Sec is my fave champagne. But if I want to save $, the Chandon Sweet Star is perfectly fine. Can’t bear brut, which is odd, ’cause don’t have much of a sweet tooth.
I’ll have to check out Sweet Star. I checked out the price of Veuve Demi-Sec, and its $$$ !
I am scent twins with FearsMice today, at least the Covet part. The bottle is really ugly, squat and with that weird plastic flower top. It isn’t even really a cap, since it fits over the sprayer without covering it. Anyway, I had some choices today, not so much of fugly bottles, but inconvenient ones. Admittedly most of mine are mini bottles, but the full size can’t be any better from what I’ve seen. The Omnias and Voyage d’Hermes are possibly the worst. IMO not all fugly bottles are inconvenient, but all inconvenient bottles are fugly.
Oh, I forgot about Voyage! I should have worn that one. It’s not ugly to look at per se but I have no idea what they were thinking with its function.
Robin wins with Voice of Reason! Those are some truly hideous bottles ????
Not nearly as fugly, but nearly so, I’ll go with the low-budget Parfums de Nicolai bottles that hold some very lovely stuff inside. Today’s choice is Cuir Cuba Intense.
Happy Friday!
I thought there would be a lot more people mentioning the Nicolai bottles today. I don’t care for those utilitarian bottles, but like you, I love what’s inside. And since PdN keeps their prices reasonable….. I can live with the bottles.
I like the bottles but the labels are not to scale and a “bit” unattractive, which makes the whole bottle look like it needs a make over.
Agreed. I was analyzing the one I have and the etched on logo plus the slapped on paper label with eyesore font looks sloppy.
PdN’s bottles may not be the best looking but I’ve yet to discover one that leaks or lets perfume evaporate overly quickly which used to happen with my Lutens’ bottles and with one Malle.
And yep they contain some of the best juice, you smell good.
I don’t have fugly bottles 🙂 So I modified the brief and looked out for the fugliest bottle in the nearest department store, my choice fell on Aura by Mugler – what the heck is that green thing supposed to be? I thought it was a cubist toad, but more generous people claim that it is an emerald heart… de gustibus non est disputandum. The scent itself? something potently fruity-vanillic with a twinge of green… I am however not a fan of Mugler scents in general, so here too more generous people might have another opinion.
From the pictures I’ve seen, I don’t care much for the bottle. I am looking forward to smelling it, I guess we don’t get it until next year.
The Mugler bottle that gets me is the Womanity one. That face staring out at me gives me the creeps.
Creeps me out too.
Well, let’s see, I have plenty of boring bottles: PdN, Byredo and all its clones (really, do so many lines have to use round clear bottle / black cap / white label / identical font?)
Then there’s the awkward bottles: tall and skinny and forever getting knocked over (Yohji Homme, Elizabeth Ardens…); or stupid floppy (CdG pebbles…)
Guess I’ll have to go with my old stand-by shop vac tho: Donna Karan Woman. Love the scent, but that bottle sure is goofy, and a bit tricky to de-cap too.
Byredo bottles are incredibly dull to look at.
I was initially drawn to the Byredo bottles, but agree on the cloning – enough already!
No fugly bottles for me! Going with Dzongkha instead, and looking forward to date night with the hubby. I have the oldish L’Artisan packaging – haven’t seen the new bottles in person yet, but I don’t think I’d mind them. I actually like dark or opaque bottles, because I don’t have to worry about damage from light.
House twins in L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer in the new packaging and it is…ugly.
The components are nice, the cap is solid and satisfyingly heavy, the bottle is tinted and heavy and the seven sided glass shape is lovely, the lable fits with the bottle. But the bottle just doesn’t work with the bolt-shaped cap. Maybe the proportions are wrong? Idk?
It’s FriYAY once again! 🙂
I don’t have any bottles that really bother me with their fugliness, so I just reached for something I haven’t worn in a long long time…..Wearing ô d’Azur by Lancôme. Good stuff, with a pretty bottle! LOL!
Have a great weekend y’all!
Sisley’s Izia for me today. Nice green-ish rose scent, hideous golden misshapen orb bottle. I’ve considered getting a decent of this, because it’s a great office-wear scent. I’ll never buy a full bottle though, because U-G-L-Y.
Yes, I find it very ugly too – the paramecium bottle, maybe it’s flanker will be an amoeba 🙂
OMG! I have not come across “paramecium” since middle school!
Last night I wore Black Gemstone (from a sample) could still smell it this morning
What a beautiful scent.
As for the bottle, its not really ugly. But it gets points reduced for trying too hard. And ‘Stephane Humbert lucas 777’, really? Why the long name….
Today, wearing Bois d’Iris. By TdC.
The bottle: nice heavy glass, heavy cap, good sprayer. But that lettering on the glass…arghhh. cheap ugly ugly font. I still cannot understand why they did not had a good label made for this line.
Love the scent though!
Tonight I must attend a birthday party. I think I am going to wear Black gemstone again or something similar. So everyone can find me in dim lit room just by smell hahaha. 😉
SHL 777 isn’t any better either. I don’t think I’ll ever see that without first thinking “jetliner” or logistics company.
Hahaha, true! 😀
Ha! Now I won’t be able to either.
Ooh I’d love to try voice of reason, as I’m on my coffee quest, but I think it’s long-discontinued ????☹️.
I don’t have any bottles that I think of as ugly, but a fair portion of my collection is none-too-cute samples & decants, like today’s juniperius, which is amazing, but possibly fast-fading. Like what I wished filles en aguilles would be like.
I’m pretty lucky to have got it in the mail yesterday, along with other varied and tempting samples, from a kind perfume pal.
ooo..you are on a coffee quest? what have you tried and what would you recommend?
Hmm. I have tried the Kerosene one, which is nice in the vial but something goes sharp on me, A*Men pure coffee, (near miss, you should try), intoxicated (similar) and the sebastianne espresso (very sweet).
I’m looking for one that’s rich but not sweet, has the complexity of coffee but some other notes as well.
if you find a really good coffee scent please do let us know….so far the only one that sounds good from above is AMen Pure Coffee.
I think the Kerosene one would be lovely on someone else.
Ok if you like or are looking for coffee, the Montale Intense Café is awesome- but I can see where it would be considered sweet. DSH has Coffee Absolute, which is a great coffee scent and she also has the Café Noir which is coffee and an oriental vibe going on – some spices and some woody notes, really nice scent – probably best worn in cool weather.
Thank you Cecelia! I did try the Montale and it was a bit on the sweet side…will add the DSH to my list as I have tried many of her fragrances and they are done quite well.
Speaking of coffee, I’ll nominate the Muger A*Men Pure Coffee bottle for fugly. Love the scent, but the bottle is covered with this weird rubbery sleeve. Ick
At least the color is nice…Kryptomint is fugly…rubbery and yucky green
I was just reading about Cafe Tuberosa which sounds like a coffee perfume. Atelier.
Will keep my eyes out at their local purveyor!
yes, that one is also on my to try list 🙂
I’m wearing Invoke perfume oil from Amber blends. I love the scent and it has a special place in my heart as I bought it on a magical vacation. But the bottle is like a dental hygiene product or something, not at all like the vessel of dreams it should be. It bothers me a little, honestly.
Well I had to look it up, I’ve never smelled this, but I’m happy to know it’s good. Yes, the bottle looks sort of like compound W 🙁
I don’t know if it’s “fugly” per se, but I went with what is probably my weirdest-looking bottle, and that is Si Lolita.
Ugliest might actually go to my little bottle of Bijan, which is in some sort of special edition thing that is shaped like the wonky B in the logo. It’s not cute. But I didn’t feel like wearing Bijan today, so Si Lolita it is.
With those funny little scarves tied on the bottles I’d call them fugly, especially the purple one. But they are funny/fugly! Does that make them fungly?
Cute!
I love the Lempicka minis, including Si. Full-size bottles lack the same charm, though. But that is always the way of tiny things – so much cuter than full-size and grown-ups. 😀
It’s true. The minis are much cuter. At least the apple-shaped ones kind of stay semi-cute in full size, but yeah, I can imagine the Si Lolita bottle would be much cuter tiny.
It’s kind of like when I’m shopping for shoes. I’ll see a shoe that I think is cute… and then I see it in my bigfoot size…. much less cute.
I am generally less concerned with esthetics of the bottle vs liking of the juice. Having said that, I generally gravitate to simple, heavy bottles (slumberhouse, FM, Papillon, Bogue). Having said that, the only bottle I highly dislike is MPG bottle – this bright stone on the cap is horrendous.
SOTD – Midnight Patchouli by VCA. Quite enjoyable!
PSA – Slumberhouse has a few bottles of Baque on their website. I think this one was a limited edition and was d/ced a while back, but looks like a few bottles are around. Also, Sova is back in stock on both their website and Fumerie (no association).
Happy Friday!!!
So would you say Baque is… back?
Excellent.
(puns aside, it fills my heart with hope to see this because I long for them to one day reissue Vikt!)
Wow, Sova is already sold out at Fumerie FYI.
I see your point regarding the MPG bottles, the faceted stone sort of cheapens the look, and semms like a child’s play perfume.
And that’s why my daughter LOVEs it. that is her favorite perfume bottle. I hope she outgrows it 🙂
I think the Slumberhouse bottles are amongst my favorites.
You sure do smell good. You are so naughty with the PSA. Excuse me while I go shop 🙂
Darn! Too late. On the plus side, money saved means I have that much more to spend on the next shopping spree!
Earlier in the week, I had planned to wear Moschino Fresh Couture, the one in the Windex bottle. Surely there can’t be anything uglier than looking like a cleaning product. But I tried my sample last night, and it’s an incredibly dull perfume. I couldn’t bring myself to wear it.
So I decided to focus my energy on finishing off my bottle of PdN Eau d’Ete. I will finish a 30ml bottle before the day is over! I had to stop spraying because I was crossing a threshold of work appropriate sillage, so I have about a ml left to use up when I get home. Also, I didn’t mind the PdN bottles at all. They’re simple and functional.
I like Crossing the threshold of work appropriate sillage, gave me a giggle….
Ugh, that Fresh Couture bottle.
I think the Windex bottle is hilarious. I bought a mini just because it amuses me. The scent is really pointless, though.
I actually find it really funny too, albeit ugly. Too bad Moschino had already used the name “Funny” for a perfume before they launched this one. Though that name with the bottle might have been too on the nose. It’s more ironic as is.
This post reminded me to look for a mini again. They were expensive and HTF when it first came out. Cheap and easy to find now!
You’re so right. That Moschino Fresh Couture bottle is funny- looking to me too!
Well, did you finish the bottle?
Wearing Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir, very plain bottle, nice juice though!
Nice? I say dang near perfect!
House twins as I have Noir on one wrist and Noir Extreme on the other..did not know there was a Noir de Noir….
SotD is MDG Racine. Nice vetiver scent, but those CAPS! Those stick-shift knobs do not belong on the rather nice, sleek bottles.
If I weren’t so lazy, I would be wearing Nikki de Ste Phalle from my bottle of pure perfume (snakes!), but it’s stored away in the basement.
It’s another lovely day here in the PNW, which I’m grateful for, as it’s helping keep my spirits up while recovering from a broken wrist. Just one little slip on the stairs, and I’ll need to be asking for help for the next six weeks, lol!
Feeling fine otherwise, though. Hope all you great-smelling peeps have an enjoyable weekend!
Make that MPG. ????
Oh but I love that bottle of Nikki 🙂 Not fugly to me at all -LOL!
Oh dear, I was afraid of stepping on someone’s toes with that comment. Thanks for laughing!
No worries about that AnnE! different strokes for different folks 🙂
I considered MPG as well, because I really dislike those bottles, ugly caps that don’t fit very well. That said it’s a good line and Racine is one of their best.
Sorry about your wrist. I hope it recovers quickly.
Broken wrist, ouch! Hope it mends quickly.
oh gosh, sorry to hear about your wrist! and yes, do ask for lots of help. 🙂
But you need that wrist for perfume sampling. Careful that you don’t clonk your nose with your plaster when you spray and sniff . Heal quickly!
*snort* I can just imagine it!
Feel better soon!
Yikes! Heal well!
Oh dear, more healing wishes to you. If you can get some PT exercises started early, it will really help, in my experience–have broken both hand and leg as an adult.
I hope not at the same time! ???? Yes, I have an app’t lined up already.
Oh, ha, no. About 5 years apart.
But I am maybe a bit accident-prone for a grown up.
????
Oh no! I hope the 6 weeks will seem to speed by for you!
Ow on the broken wrist! Having a cast in the summer sounds terrible.
Not as bad as having a cast in the rainy season, lol!
Ouch! Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Thanks, everyone! I posted at the end and just realized my silly mistake. Anyhoo, I’m so happy to be a part of this community! You all rock. 🙂
Oh no, missed this earlier, so sorry about your wrist!
Thanks, Robin!
I’m wearing Halston. Not a good bottle. (But I really don’t own many bottles I consider fugly. I had to search!)
Agreed, not a good bottle at all.
I always think that bottle looks like some weird space-age variety of sex toy.
Excellent description.
I always think it looks like the IRL thing, quirks and all 😉
You nailed it
Yup.
I must be a subconscious pervert because I always loved the bottle….modern art……
Elisa, what does Halston smell like these days? It was a perfume both my mother and I wore back in the day, but I see it at the discounters for under $15, and I wonder if it has been cheapened down to nothing.
I’m not sure! I think my bottle is vintage? It was a gift from kpaint!
The vintage stuff was so good.
Yes it was!
From what i have read it is not the same as what it was when you and I wore it back in the day (late 70s)…..folks are saying it has been reformulated twenty times over 🙁
Sigh. 🙁
Oh I loved that one back in the 1980s. Drained several bottles. Found a tiny vintage, top notes were off but it smelled nice after awhile. I think Elsa Pieriti (sp)? designed the bottle?
I forgot about the ugly bottle Friday and am wearing SJP’s Stash today.
You smell great! Love Stash
I was sent a sample of Aventus for Her from the Nordstrom sales rep for Creed yesterday, since they just started selling it, so before I left for work I just spritzed it once. I think it qualifies for the challenge, as I had no interest in smelling Creed once I started my fragrance obsession/research due to the exorbitantly high prices and ugly bottles. They were the last major house I ended up smelling due to the aesthetics. haha. Actually, the sales associate who sent me the sample is one of us, and she was my introduction to the brand, otherwise I might not have ever given it a go. She collects bottles as well as perfume, and has a ton of vintage, so it was a delight talking fragrance with her in general, and not just Creed. This one is sharp metallic green apple, very Creed.
Yes, Creed is ugly.
How great to be able to talk perfume with an SA, fun 🙂
I am a beginner, and am also highly influenced by the bottle, and prices!
Creed bottles look like something you’d find in a drugstore. I was shocked to learn they’re high-end. The logo (swirly name) always looks like a car manufacturer insignia to me, and I don’t know if I’ve ever broken that association.
Montale may just be my holdout for the very same reasons you avoided Creed. Maybe some day; probably never. 😉
I only recently became interested in Montale because I saw a metallic red bottle that turned my head. Haven’t smelled any of them yet.
Ok save yourselves – don’t try the Montales 🙂 – They are wonderful IMHO. That red bottle – Red Aoud – yum! I personally think it’s the best intro to any aoud scent as its really really tame compared to how sharp some aouds can be. And there’s a purple bottle – Café Intense – which is a crazy good scent to me. Run run!
Purple you say? Cafe intense? Tell me more. I’m not much of a runner anyway….
Oh gosh sorry I just saw this lillyjo – check out Kevin’s review of the Red Aoud – he is much better at describing it than I could ever be! When it dries down on my I get ever the faintest whiff of something like chocolate chip cookies. I know that sounds crazy but it’s true.
I’ve found that I really like a good few of the Montales. The Red, White and Black aouds smell nothing alike to me, and the café intense is one of the most comforting scents I own 🙂
nothing like it on a cold day!
Interesting. I always think they look rather hostile. Like some club I’m not allowed to be in.
My actual ugliest bottle (Salvador Dali pour homme) is tucked away for winter so I’m in Mugler Cologne today. I don’t find the bottle particularly ugly or particularly attractive, but I do find it awkward – hard to hold and spray. Luckily I love the juice . . .
Yep, you smell great !
I’m wearing Paloma Picasso Minotaure. The bottle is a hideous 90s affair with a cheap “gilded” plastic cap, but the juice itself smells lovely.
I loooove Minotaure. And my mini is also pretty ugly.
I have the large frosted bottle with relief lettering in the glass. Cap is kind of metallicized brown? Super cheap sprayer, but love the fragrance!
My fugly bottle (and I only own a mini) is Versace Blonde. I find the tacky side of the juice appealing but somehow that does not apply to the bottle.
Blonde is not so bad, particularly in comparison with the Crystal collection, which are to my mind the epitome of perfume bottle fugly.
I had to google Crystal–ha that stuff is ugly! And how about Versace Woman or Eros?
Happy Friday, peeps! Hope it’s a good one for you!
My Fugly Friday scent is VS Angel, which I got on clearance when they were changing the packaging. No wonder: It has attached plastic wings. ???? https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Victoria-s-Secret/Victoria-s-Secret-Angel-15219.html
Nice bottle….Good to see VS partnering up with Wim Wenders at last.
*snorts tea*
Very good!
Hahaha! That is surreal.
????Excellent.
???? Good one!
Late afternoon update:
I stopped by off-site storage (™Kanuka) earlier and spritzed on some Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré while in Sephora, and then I discovered that my local Macy’s has finally got Mon Guerlain in. I sprayed lavishly. As a Guerlainophile, I’m gutted to say Mon Guerlain is a ‘no’ on me. It smells very much like SL Gris Clair does on my skin. Is anyone else old enough to have lived with a swamp cooler? It’s that fishy smell the wet pads get, plus a bit of vanilla.
I’m so sorry you had to smell like that!
Thanks! It wasn’t too horrible–it was really more noticeable with my nose up close to my arm. But I t was definitely like, “Wow, that is just not right!” ????It’s settled now and seems to smell more of a bourbon-y vanilla.
Eeeek. It smelled way better on me but not FBW…I would happily participate in a split. Although, come to think of it, Mon Guerlain from the sample atomizer top sometimes smells like…vomit.
Eww, vomit. I’m confident it wasn’t the atomizer, because the juice smelled fine on the card. It’s something about that combination of notes that Gris Clair also has. Just doesn’t work on my skin.
The notes look good!
I personally wouldn’t buy it full-price, but the mist is a good value and is good for spritzing on t-shirts or whatnot to freshen them up. It’s an inoffensive sweet powdery/musky fruity floral.
Back home early this morning from vacation. Not so happy to step again in a huge concrete city, like NY. So depressing. We had a wonderful and refreshing time, even though we encounter choppy seas in our way back due to Hurricane Gert. Very unpleasant. My dog was so happy when I picked him up. He lost lots of weight since he did not eat much. We will spoil him for a couple of days. Besides wearing Chanel No. 19, I sampled few perfumes that I blindly grabbed from my stash. Bombay Bling was soooo good. Bond No. 9 Bleeker Street was a scrubber. Too masculine and very overwhelming. NV Mohur and Rahele: So beautiful. Heeley Iris de Nuit: Love it. It went to to my FB shopping list. Tom Ford Violet Blond: Beautiful but too expensive for a FB. I did not buy anything scent related, but we enjoy the local food greatly. I got some rum cakes that are always in my shopping list when we have traveled on vacation to the Caribbean.
Looking forward to watching the eclipse on Monday. We will get 72%. Not so bad. I am not participating in the Friday community project. I have many simple, plain bottles, but not really ugly ones. Wearing Heeley Sel Marin and enjoying it greatly. Have a happy Friday everyone.
Iris de Nuit also moved directly to my shopping list in June – wish I could buy a bottle smaller than 100ml though.
I also wish there was a smaller size. That is a good candidate for a split.
Welcome back! Sorry you had to come back to reality, and kind of yucky weather today but I’m sure doggy is thrilled. Sounds like a great trip, aside from choppy seas. I love Caribbean food. I used to work with many West Indians from different islands when I worked in a hospital and they loved to cook and bring in food to share. Jamaican black cake is sooo good!
I second the black cake praise, but it is a chore to make. Have never seen any for sale.
Thank you Elisa P. We really had a great time and the dog is happy and peacefully sleeping in his bed already. The black cake is really amazing. I have never seen any place selling it here. Otherwise, I would become a faithful customer. I have been tempted to make it, but it is a big task. The Bahamian rum cake is very tasty and simple. It does not have the dates, nuts or cherries of the black cake. They come in different flavors like pineapple, chocolate, banana, etc, but the original one and the coffee are really good. When we were leaving in Park Slope we used to go to Caribbean restaurants more often. There are nice ones in the area. Where we live now I have not seen any place at all. I probably will look for some in the surrounding neighborhoods.
I used to live in Prospect Heights but only ate at one local place-mostly take-out. We ate at a place in ozone park that was pretty good-Trinidadian or Guyanese, not sure which but it was a roti place and the name escapes me.
The Bahamian rum cake sounds good, too. Especially coffee flavor, yum!
Welcome back, perfumelover67. I will take pointers from you on Caribbean cruises as I had never been to the Caribbean. The choppy seas, oy vey. I was not a happy camper the second to the last night and last morning of my Alaska cruise because of choppiness. Thank God I bounced back for the final night’s meal at the specialty restaurant!
Thank you! If you like the tropics, the Caribbean is always nice. The beaches are beautiful. We usually stay away from the cruise tours that for us are very limited. We book with local tours, since our interest is to be in touch with locals, buy in their stores, eat their food and learn something from their culture, daily lives, etc. The time we spend in the beach is minimum. We like to go during summer time to avoid a drastic change of temperatures. That is why we do not do it during winter time. But if you want to escape from the cold it is a good and relaxing option.
Welcome back from vacay!
Thank you!
SOTD is Rundholz “03.Apr.1968”.
Top: lychee;
Mid: heliotrope;
Base: olibanum.
The bottle looks like an oversized whiteboard pen made of glass. it is awkward to hold and I live in fear of it toppling over and smashing.
I was worried this great incense fragrance would be suffocating on a hot August day. Ha ha ha. I guess I forgot which country I live in. Today was cold, grey, windy, with thunder and lightening and hail. (And intervals of warm-ish sun, but sssh, don’t spoil the narrative). Anyway, I wasn’t overwhelmed. :^)
Is Rundholz one of those German fashion brands? Hope you will be home with your perfume samples this weekend…how long till the end of the Dusseldorf gig?
Apparently so – I had to google it.
http://www.studiorundholz.com
I can totally see Waterdragon rocking that look (based entirely on how I interpret what she writes here). It would not look good on me.
I’m contracted through to end September. I might be offered and extension, and I might take it. The people I work with are nice and the work isn’t very stretching. (On the other hand, the work isn’t very stretching). Dusseldorf is a relatively small (600k), clean city with great bars and restaurants. Flights are short, frequent and tolerably cheap. We’ll see how it works out – I’m looking to see what else is available, but I’m not desperate to leave as I was in Paris. :^)
At the moment I am home Thu night – Sun evening and in DUS Sun night to Thu evening. From Sep I’ll have to travel Mon morning for tax reasons – not looking forward to the 04:00 alarm calls. Anyway, it means I was able to do the Friday challenge today because the Rundholz is one of my FBs. :^)
Sehr kuhl klothes and shoes. And Germany in late summer is nice.
Some perfumeries could be a little more sensitive to the needs of the clumsy. (I’m thinking of me here, not you.)
SotM = Masque Milano Terralba from a sample. The card bears this message:
In front of you, the sea. Behind, the mediterranean shrubland. It is morn.
I smell sage and a faintly watery melon. Hope the resinous notes win out or I may scrub this one.
Enjoyed reading everyone’s choices today. I couldn’t find anything in a fugly-to-me bottle to wear, though the caps on the Masque Milano bottles may almost qualify. Looking at a photo I see they are . . . unusual in their size and shape. Personally I find them rather nice. I love big caps and I can not lie.
I’ve never seen them IRL, but ya, I do hate the cap.
“If I could turn back time….” Yep, wearing “Uninhibited” by Cher.
That is one great song and one great clip!
and one very fugly bottle. *wanders off to find a battleship*
* and a rather naughty outfit*
Nah, that’s the way I always dress 😉
Wow! Wish I could smell that one again.
To turn back time? 😉
In a heartbeat!
Hilde Soliani Freschiiissimo which is probably the plainest possible packaging of anything I own
It’s Saturday! It’s my wedding anniversary….honestly can’t remember if it’s 19 or 20 , but long enough to know better. It’s my birthday!!! 54!!! What????!!!! needle scrapes across vinyl.
I don’t think we do birthdays etc. in this house (from what I can tell from the random mutterings of discontent yesterday ..as in “You’re too old for birthdays”…. )but I am PLAYING with SL Fleur d’oranges and Bapteme du Feu and I like them both.
Orange…is orange with a heady , creamy flower so it goes a bit beachy
BDF: lemon custard and 4711 eau de cologne stuffed into a warm cinnamon donut. I wanted more of a gunpowder note in the dry down but I get a soft burnt violet.
I wanted to get back to my perfume roots with SL and try again. But as my friend used to say:Don’t reheat the soup!
Off to the beach later and then fish n chips and champagne. happy weekend everyone!!!
Happy birthday and happy anniversary Kanuka. Enjoy the day!
Beach, fish n chips and champagne sounds like a great celebration! Happy and Happy!
Happy Birthday fellow Leo !!
Lots o’ mysteries solved with that piece o’ the puzzle revealed.
😉
Don’t slow down cause I’ll catch you up!
Forewarned,
Forearmed!
😉
Cheers, Kanuka!
Mmmmm….fish & chips and champagne sounds perfect. Congratulations and Happy Birthday! {And I know all about that needle scrape – I do my best to ignore it. 😉 }
Happy birthday and happy anniversary!
Happy birthday and I adore how you describe fragrances!
Happy birthday and happy anniversary!
Happy Birthday and Anniversary!
Happy Bithdayversary! You’re almost elderly ????
Love this! Its a new word, like Festivas! ????
Happy Birthversary Kunuka!
Happy birthday and happy anniversary!
Happy anniversary! And happy birthday from another 1963 baby. But you first, I have a few months yet til I hit 54…
Me too, and I just had a 20th wedding anniversary in July.
Happy anniversary!!!
Happy birthday and happy anniversary and may your fish always have chips. ;^)
Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday, Kanuka!!! Have a lovely weekend!
Two special occasions on one day? That’s living large! Happy Scented Birthday AND Anniversary!
Those random mutterings sound familiar! Happy birthday anyway, and congrats on staying married so long 🙂
Belated Happy Birthday and Anniversary to you, Kanuka!
The ugliest bottle I own is Britney Spears Fantasy Stage Edition. I couldn’t bring myself to wear it, though…total impulse buy at Marshalls, and what was I thinking?!?!? I love gourmands and I’m all for a good cheapie, but this one just doesn’t work on me. The bottle is absolutely hideous…the yellow “design” is a plastic wrap-around, with a seam, that reminds me of those little plastic things you can use around Easter eggs. Even if I pulled the plastic off, the gold stuff on the neck and pink/purple cap is still horrible. I should really send this off to Goodwill already.
SOTD = Fils de Dieu!
Ugh, that does sound hideous! Did not realize it was just a plastic wrapper.
Happy Friday Everyone! I’m wearing Knot by Bottega Veneta today. Have a good weekend everyone!
I had a few options today: Anais Anais (one of my favorite fragrances ever; bottle started out ugly and has gotten worse;) Eau de Cartier Zest de Soleil (didn’t realize how awful it is until it arrived in the mail;) Ginestet Botrytis (I’m guessing they were going for old school elegance, but it’s cheap-looking and tacky and comes with a stupid gold mesh bag [really???] and has one of the worst sprayers ever;) Caron Aimez-Moi (a house that’s produced some criminally ugly bottles over the years, but the alien/birdbath that is Aimez-Moi takes first place in fugly.)
But I ended up in Lempicka L’Eau en Blanc. My H has the day off and was wearing A*Men this morning, so I wanted to wear something in a similar vein that wouldn’t compete. (It’s always a treat for me to smell A*Men on him.)
I have a small collection of Lempicka minis, bought entirely because of their irresistible cuteness. I ended up with a FB of L’Eau en Blanc because it desperately needed to be sprayed, in very large doses. So the bottle’s been sitting out since this a.m., and I’ve slowly realized it’s really ugly. The mini cuteness does not translate, and furthermore it’s some kind of LE that’s got fake pearls glued all over it. (I’ve also always hated the unnecessarily huge box.)
So – participating, entirely unintentionally.
Funny, I think the Botrytis bottle is beautiful but don”t like the scent. I owned a bottle which I sold on the bay.
I have the Aimez Moi starfish mini which I think is adorable, but it might be cuz it’s mini. Don’t think I’ve seen the adult bottle.
I think the bottle looks kind of cool in photos, but I’ve never seen it in real life.
Aimee-Moi, I was thinking of, but it’s true of L’Eau en Blanc as well.
Aimez. Sit down, spellcheck!
I’m in FM Une Rose on the left, thanks to our generous flopper. This is truly lovely. I was never keen on rose perfumes until I fell down the rabbit hole. Boy, have things changed. ????
For the Friday project, wearing Blenheim Bouquet on the right. The bottle isn’t fugly, but since the lid is loose on the bottle, it is highly annoying. I don’t have any truly fugly bottles, so this will do.
The Penhaligon’s bottles are *this close* to pretty, but the plastic cap is such a disappointment. And expensive, too! They shouldn’t be so cheaply made at those prices.
I dont really pay much attention to the bottles and I only have a few here. So choose Bottega Knot, since I’m not a bit fan of the cap. Love the perfume though ????
Crazy day with no time to read everyone’s choices.
I went with Eau du Soir for today’s theme. Although the bottle is fine, the cap is really tacky looking and it falls off to boot. Stupid thing doesn’t seal. It’s really annoying but the scent more than compensates for the cap. I sprayed at 7AM on skin only and can still smell it. I can’t say that about many of my current perfumes.
Oh, dear. That is really hideous. Nevertheless one I keep meaning to try 😉
Yeah the cap -IS- awful . Frankly , it looks like someone collected something a dog left and then gilded it with gold spray paint and stuck it on the cap.
OM Goodness..Perfect, but I’ll always think of this now. ????
I would happily have a lovely perfume in an ugly bottle, but it is nice when both bottle and perfume are beautiful. Maybe I’m a bit non-discriminating, I can’t think of anything truly ugly amongst my FBs, but there are a lot that are a bit ordinary. Doing my housework in a spray of Maharanih from Parfums de Nicolai – definitely in the category of a rather ordinary bottle.
I really like Maharanih, and good at this time of year.
No truly fugly bottles in my collection, but there are a couple that make me cringe when I look at them. SOTD = Dior’s Higher. I have the tacky silver plastic wrapped bottle. The scent however, is along the lines of a couple of the Atelier Colognes I have tried. It’s just the thing for a day with a triple digit heat index thanks to obscene amounts of humidity in the air. I am thankful that this kind of weather hasn’t really been around much in my parts this summer.
I’ve never heard of Higher. Ugh, the weather! So muggy and I think it is supposed to be all weekend!
I don’t think any of my bottles are particularly ugly, so not participating today. Wearing MAC Africanimal today. My husband just left this morning on a trip (science geek – heading north to see the eclipse). He gets migraines from scent and this one in particular bugs him, so wearing it now while I can!
I think the name is a little ugly, so I’d give you partial credit. (Please picture the emoji that means kidding here. I am old enough and out of it enough to lack all confidence in my use of them.) Enjoy wafting your Africanimal, which I haven’t smelled, but sounds pretty wonderful.
What the fu–
n! 332 comments as I am just starting to write my comment. All week, many people kept saying they may not be able to participate because no fugly bottle!
SOTD = Mugler Angel Muse
Fugly bottle:
1. It can only lay flat – Boo!
2. The cap is hard to get off. I have visions of pulling it off to see the perfume half fly off, hit something hard, shatter, spewing juice ALL over. The only consolation is it is not Angel. If I shattered a bottle of Angel, I may have to consider selling the house!
3. The shape – it looks like an Alien’s eye
On the plus side but still not enough to mov it out of fugly territory – mine is a 30 mL bottle
The juice is very nice. I would put it in the Wood Pudding category. It’s a nutty creamy Angel. 2 spritzes = 12+!hours
Commuting Woes No. 382:
Why dontone deaf people insist on whistling their way through their entire commute. Whistling feels like someone stabbed me with an ice pick and twisted it.
You smell great. I have yet to spritz Angel on, but it smells pretty delicious in the bottle. I’m not a fan of bottles that don’t stand up. If you shattered a bottle of Angel, I think you’d *have* to sell the house!
I have sprayed on Angel solo but going forward, I will wear it with something creamy to make it more me.
Grr, I meant Angel *Muse* smells good to me; I’ve never been able to bring myself to spray on the original Angel.
I’m duo syncing fugly bottle for here , opposite gender for BN.
My choice : Reyanne Traditions : Insurrection . The bottle looks a bit like a clear glass change purse that oddly got a slide lock( like we’ve all encountered at many a restroom) made out of cheap tinfoil colored plastic for the cap . Scent is somewhere between Givanchy Pi and Obsession but lighter than either (which is good because I’ve been dealing with a low to moderate headache all day.)
Wow! No idea what they were going for here but having googled it certainly fits the ugly bottle theme!
Thanks to all for the very kind get-well wishes! I appreciate this group so much. ❤️
I went with Queen Latifah Queen of Hearts. The bottle is a clear glass version of the original Queen’s red bottle, and I actually like it a little better, but I got an allergy shot today, and Queen just seemed like too much. (These Friday shots are really cramping my style. At least they’re not every week anymore.)
The bottles are actually quite practical: compact enough that even the 100ml bottles fit in my smallish hands, and all the texture makes them easier for those of us with peripheral neuropathy to hang onto. The hearts are also embossed on the front and debossed on the back, which is nice attention to detail. Hearts just tend to read juvenile to me, though, and the knobbly texture seems to add to that impression by sort of resembling a chenille bedspread. (Apologies to anyone with a chenille bedspread. I’m sure yours is beautiful.) Here’s a link to a photo: http://www.omfragrances.com/images/Queen-Latifah-Perfume.jpg
Looking forward to reading about everyone else’s picks. My choice for a perfume I bought just for the bottle was going to be L de Lolita Lempicka Coral Flower, and I would not be a bit surprised if it (or the original L, which I also love) is someone’s choice for today. One person’s tacky, etc. Have a great weekend, everyone! I’m going to the Norton Simon museum tomorrow, for the first time in probably twenty years.
Youth Dew, 80s formulation in the ugly Coke bottle. It is one of the greatest fragrances on earth.
