The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 27 July 2017 11 Comments

Back to school shopping yet? Crayola has updated and repackaged their Silly Scents collection for 2017. The new Twistable Crayons come in a pack of 24, with scents that include cherry, strawberry, cinnamon, orange, popcorn, lemon, banana, lime, watermelon, green apple, pine, beach, blueberry, cola, wild berry, grape, fruit smoothie, fruit punch, cotton candy, licorice, coconut, fresh air, root beer and flower ($7.99). They've also redone the Silly Scents Markers and Twistable Colored Pencils.

I should be embarrassed to admit that I own these, but what the hell, you can buy them at a craft store for like $5 with a coupon. They’re a fun idea and kids will find them irresistible but there are two problems with the execution: 1) there are no caps so all the crayons and their plastic holders absorb one another’s scents — the cotton candy doesn’t smell like cotton candy, it smells like a slurry of other things — and 2) the plastic crayon holders aren’t labelled with the colour name and scent, so you have to refer to the back of the box. They did a much better job with the markers.

No you shouldn’t! And thanks for the review, good to know.

I wouldn’t be embarrassed to own these at all! What I AM embarrassed about was remembering how I sniffed markers as a kid and truthfully STILL like the smell of them. Even the non-fruit scented ones. But I had fruity markers as a kid (and that was a looooong time ago) that I smelled endlessly, and had marker smudges under my nose for evidence. I managed to graduate from college so it apparently did very little damage to my brain cells. LOL

I had fruity scented markers as a kid and the marker smudges under my nose as a kid too! Ah, memories. I must have looked like a real nut.

I was just wondering what it would be like to be a kindergarten teacher in a room full of these crayons, it’s disappointing that the are so muddled in scents.

Adorable! My kids loved the twistable crayons when they were little scribblers.

I think I’ll buy a pack of the markers for myself. They’ll be perfect for when I go back to teaching in the fall. :)

I may get the twistable colored pencils. I am way behind on the coloring trend – is it now passe?

I don’t even know, that’s how out of it I am.

Not sure of the distinction between “fruit smoothie” and “fruit punch.” And I’m old enough that we didn’t have fruit-scented markers. Bah humbug!
