Tuesday scent of the day 7/25

Posted by Robin on 25 July 2017 243 Comments

Mategot Trolley

It's Tuesday, and it's Hot Fudge Sundae Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Aftelier Curious. Tea at the moment is Harney & Sons Tower of London.

Reminder: 7/28 will be Nathalie Friday...wear a perfume by Nathalie Lorson or Nathalie Feisthauer, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: I'm pretty sure my tea would taste much better if it had been wheeled to me on a Mategot Trolley: "A spacious tea trolley with two trays in perforated steel connected by steel tubes. The lower level includes a newspaper holder. The trolley has rotating castors." The new one shown, from Gubi, is $999 at the Danish Design Store. You can find vintage trolleys by Mathieu Matégot at 1stDibs, starting at around $2000.

    That is one handsome trolley!

Commando drinking coffee and burning a violet & amber wood candle. I plan to wear Jardin Apres Le Mousson later since it’s cool and cloudy here.

It would be nice to be served tea from a fancy tea trolley. Especially if someone else mskes it and cleans up. ????
Another cool cloudy day here so I chose Cocoa Tuberose as today’s comfort scent.

Same! We just watched ‘Trolls’ the other night and I just loved it. There were many parts that were laugh out loud funny. Characters that fart glitter and poop cupcakes are right up my alley apparently. Lol. Plus singing, I didn’t know that Anna Kendrick had such a lovely voice.

Ottawa was great, we visited MosaicCanada in the Jacques Cartier park, some of the best horticulture statues I have ever seen. Did the usual beaver tail pastry, canal cruise, changing the guard parade and I found a great boulangerie that sold amazing delights and my first time trying Dammann Freres tea..

It was at a boulangerie in By Market, they didn’t sell a container of tea, you could just order a cup of tea and pick what flavor. I tried the breakfast and the darjeeling. The name of the shop was the French Baker. I asked her where I could by the tea and she said maybe Bagota market..I didn’t have time to go but it was right across from where they sell the beaver tails.

How did you like the charcoal ice cream? I tried a bite here in LA and thought the color was better than the flavor. In my humble opinion, black sesame ice cream is still the best black (technically grey) ice cream

I got green tea (black) mixed with purple which was a sweet yam. They also fill the bottom of the cones with fluff. The ice cream wasn’t overly sweet or artificial tasting..I really really enjoyed it. Worth the wait

I have had a similar summer.
First, I don’t like summer or heat or sweating. Saudi Arabia did me in.
Second I don’t like beachy scents and there are none in my collection/home/desires.
Third, my fragrance choices have been muted since m mom died 5 months ago now.
I mostly go for Parfum Satori, or box of eels except for one week where I sprayed Chinatown with abandon.
Some days have been scentless. I’m sure the mojo will return.

I know that the fact that I have been going thru some personal and work issues this year might be also affecting my enthusiasm for perfumes. The heat also sometimes makes me feel exhausted to wear anything. I will get back to them with all my energy and love once I overcome this apathy :)

SOTD: Early Nathalie with Lalique’s Amethyst
Drinking: Cold brew coffee with extra ice-cubes!
I really want one of those “Nitro-cold brew” coffee servers in my kitchen (if there even is a domestic version). The coffee stays deliciously cold for sooo long.

I’m sipping some homemade cold brew myself right now! I looked around online to see if there were any nitro kits for home use, and there appear to be some if you’re willing to shell out around $200. Which I might be, although I’m sure if I did my boyfriend would think I’d gone completely insane…

SOTD is Mancera “Wild Rose Oud”.

    Top: bergamot and lemon;
    Mid: rose, jasmine and patchouli;
Base: amber, musk, oud and vanilla.

“De gustibus non est disputandum”. Personally, if someone had the effrontery to demand $995 for that hideous contraption of tin and wire, I’d wrap it around their ears and set fire to them. (Reminder to self: never show Robin pictures of my Edwardian home, for fear of her mid-century modern derision). :^D

Oh, on the contrary. There aren’t really all that many styles of furniture that I do not love, in fact, I would just say that I love furniture. Despite that, I am not a collector and my own house is a complete mish-mash — and it is definitely not done in mid century modern.

It was always a winter scent for me as well because the vintage version that I wore from the 1970s to 1980s was in its oakmoss glory and had some heft to it…the current rendition is more about the citrus and definitely summer-y

Gearing up for another scorcher here in CO today, and I easily reached for what is becoming a go-to scent this summer, DSH Perfume’s Divine Gardens. I had sampled this one a few times at Dawn’s studio, but had somehow not given it enough attention until recently, when I pulled out a sample vial I’d taken home with me, and WOW…bolt of lightning! Within days, I had my very own bottle, and I’m going through it rapidly. This has quickly become an absolute HG for me. I wore it six days in a row last week, which must be a record for me, given the size of my collection and my general ADD tendencies, especially when it comes to perfume, but it is so absolutely lovely that I find myself reaching for it constantly.

This is a classic, effortless perfume that is beautiful in the heat, but would also work well in cooler months. It’s a floral, but it’s a greener floral that even a floral-phobe could love. The notes are quite unusual, and not the floral overload that you might expect of a fragrance of this name. Light jasmines, muguet (normally a no-go note for me), rose otto, orris, tagettes, and violette are beautifully balanced by green notes of tomato leaf (tomato leaf lovers, rejoice in this fragrance!), fir, basil, spearmint and white thyme, touched lightly by traces of mandarin, and smoothed with a base of soft sandalwood and vetiver. The effect is one of perfect balance between clean green and floral. The lasting power is excellent, with moderate sillage. It literally brings a smile to my face as I catch wisps of it throughout the work day.

I make no bones about the fact that DSH is my absolute favorite nose; I have more than 35 of her fragrances in my collection, many of which are, to me, HGs in their genres. Divine Gardens is right up there as my absolute favorite green floral, and if this genre appeals to you, I would urge you to sample this perfect gem.

Sampling datura blanche (Keiko Mecheri), a pretty flowery-creamy scent, that stays very close to the skin, I keep thinking it could be the scent of a luxurious body butter, which I would be happy to use, more than as a perfume.

Commando for now. My husband decided his birthday was an occasion to share…his cold, that is. His is a wicked cough, mine is just stuffiness right now. I did wear a Fiori di Capri again last night when we met some friends for dinner in Little Italy. It’s funny…every time I wear that my husband asks what I sprayed on. He notices it and likes it.

I like the tea cart but an Ikea label and price tag seem more apt for a little bit of metal and some glass, IMHO.

It’s so cool and gray out – all I wanna do is stay home and cuddle up under a blanket with my book! So, as motivation to get off my butt and go to work, I’m treating myself to Urban Decay Go Naked perfume oil. This is a recent acquisition, which I bought within about 10 minutes of trying it on. It was a no-brainer purchase because the notes list includes basically everything I’ve been craving this summer:

Top: bergamot, petitgrain, mandarin orange, lemon, and sea salt
    Middle: neroli and orange blossom
    Base: lavender, musk, and jasmine

It dries down into a subtle, beachy skin musk. Perfect.

Wearing LAP Passage d’Enfer in “excessive heat warning” weather. I bought this in the winter and therefore thought of it as a winter perfume. Surprise: it smells great in the summer! The frankincense is more prominent in the heat.

    Triple strength coffee.
    Extra long workout.
    Chance Chanel EDT.
    huh
Vetiver, grapefruit, jasmine, and a bit of patchouli.
Not really pleasant and kinda dull.
Tested Coco Mademoiselle EDP last week. OK…. but about 5 hours on I was surrounded by the aroma of camphor/mothballs.
Trying to find the olfactory source- of course it was me.
The patchouli in CM can make me a mobile moth repellant.
    Have perfume, will travel……
    Competitive rates…..

Or like the warming of trees and shrubbery after a rain storm in summer.

If it was a “real” Mategot, they were crazy. If it was a copy, that’s probably what it’s worth.

Not sure buying the new Gubi one is worth $999 either, since not sure it will keep its value. Not saying it won’t, saying I don’t know.

It smells of lavender absolute to my nose. Lavender absolute is more muted and creamier…less herbal and fresh in comparison to lavender essential oil…and I love it as a perfume unto itself. For some reason my wonky skin is taking hold of it and really amps it up…but I do get the patch vibe too. I really like it, but then again I am a hippy chic :)

Binge watched season three of Grantchester last night and didn’t sleep until about 2am. No spin class. I chickened out. But I did take my four legged bestie on a long hike that ended at the dog park, so she is quite thoroughly pooped out. As for me, aprés shower, I will blast myself with the stunning Corsica Furiosa. Iris Ukiyoe this morning. This smells like bug spray on me. Into the swapmeet pile it goes!

Went to the grocery store yesterday and bought some Not Your Father’s Root Beer. Somehow it escaped me that it is actual beer that has been flavored to taste like root beer. I don’t like beer. The first sip had a distinct beery aftertaste but as I drank more, 1) the aftertaste became less prominent and 2) I didn’t care. :-)

Ha! That’s exactly how it captured me too! I don’t like beer (or really anything that tastes of alcohol). I had my first bottle with cheeseburger hot off the outdoor grill, dressed to the hilt, with a side of baked beans and my mouth was so HAPPY!! Some nice people I met camping fed me the above meal, we had a very nice evening around the campfire so now when I have a bottle, that whole scene replays in my head. Easy, uncomplicated, and relaxed.i love it when that happens!

What a happy memory! I’m going to look for that “root beer”. Ha as kids we would always order root beer without the “root”. Today I saw Shiner Strawberry Blonde. Their Blonde beer is great.

I’m a fan of most of Shiner beers. Have you tried the Oktoberfest? I sampled it at the HEB this weekend, and it was marvy. We needed NO MORE BEER, but I brought home a six pack anyway.

That one is not bad. I was wary at first because I had tried Abita’s strawberry beer and didn’t like it. But Shiner’s is pretty good.

I think my skin is stress-eating perfume the way I would like to be stress-eating a hot fudge sundae. I’m wearing the gorgeous De Profundis, courtesy of the generous flopper. When I wore it this weekend, it lasted for hours. Today, after two hours, it’s all but gone. I really need to have more back-up perfumes in my purse.

Robin, how do you like Curious? We tried all of the compose notes, and then all the top, medium and base combined together. Individual components smelled better than the final product (at least to my peasant nose).
I am in sandalwood heaven today. Wearing a real mysore sandalwood attar and wondering if I would ever buy another perfume again – this smells so good!!!!

Curious is not instant love, in fact, been trying to make up my mind about it. Might be I’m going to like it better in summer? Might be that it is not me. Either say, thinking it’s not one of her more “accessible” scents? (oops…meant “like it better in winter”.)

Trying out Miu Miu today after reading EauMG’s review yesterday. It’s nice for a mainstream! Good lily of the valley note, neither a shrinking violet nor too in-your-face, and different enough from the other Sephora fodder scents to stand out a little. I like it although it’s probably not a fb for me.

Another little sample to use up, and not a bad match for today–le labo limette…
Also picked up a few samples this week out in the wild–have heard people here talk about Allure Homme Sport Edition Blanche (whew) and thought it was discontinued–or maybe I misremembered reformulated? But I got a little sample, and of Tom For Positano, which is too much money, but a free sample is just the right price for a delightful orange blossom.

I had to get a passport photo yesterday and boy was I rattled when I saw the result. Who is that woman with greyish hair, thin lips and no jaw? Death mask blank stare. Me? Aaaaaarrrrgggh. Thought I’d cheer myself up by going to my off-site perfume storage but got sprayed with a sample of Coach which just made things worse. I don’t even have an overseas trip planned…so there’s not a silver lining in all this. Worse, in ten years time I will glance at this awful photo and think, ‘ i looked okay back then…compared to now.’ Wearing Lale this morning and will go for a nice long walk in the mud and trees and bring a bit of joy back into my day. Love the tea tray.

There’s an entire cottage industry on how to make your selfies look fantastic because you don’t want a future employer to judge you badly for it, it’s honestly quite stressful.

    SOTD?

Wearing Benefit’s Bathina body oil, which was a free gift with purchase but I still cannot throw it out… and so needed something equally violently feminine to wear as a perfume to go with it—and remembered the Dame Honeysuckle decant I was given over the weekend.

Bathina + Honeysuckle=one of those women who tan beautifully and can wear tank tops into their 70s.

I actually smell okay, I think… just not like me.
