Wednesday scent of the day 7/19

Posted by Robin on 19 July 2017 248 Comments

 A Moveable Feast, Hemingway

Hump Day, and Benedict Cumberbatch's birthday, and Daiquiri Day (here is the recipe for a Hemingway Daiquiri). What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying Nomenclature Shi_so.

Reminder: 7/21 is Ernest Hemingway's birthday. Do what you will with the theme, and tell us why you chose your fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top left image is the cover of A Moveable Feast: The Restored Edition, top right is Ernest Hemingway 1923 Passport Photograph, 1923 via The National Archives.

I will tie this in by saying that the citrus in OS pairs with the citruses in Hemingway’s Daiquiri :)

and I am currently watching the latest season of Elementary…but I do also like Cumberbatch’s Sherlock

Our Tivo cut off the last 15 minutes of the last episode of the latest season of Elementary. Glad you reminded me, I need to go find the clip somewhere!

Ack! Nothing worse than missing the ending of a season! I am sure you could probably watch it online. I love the chemistry between the two actors and I also enjoy looking at Joanne Watson’s wardrobe :) I know, silly reason to like a show, but there you have it!

My son & I mostly sit and complain about how often the characters explain and/or rehash what is happening, sometimes more than once, in case viewers are lost. Sherlock expects you to get it, Elementary expects you to be utterly confused. But we do enjoy it!

I like both Sherlock and Elementary quite a lot. And Joan’s boots!

A female Watson?! How intriguing! I’ll have to look into Elementary.

Joan has the best wardrobe on TV. I’ve been coveting it for years.

Robin- well, it ‘s entertaining….you’re right though, Sherlock is more cerebral!

Koyel- yes, a female Watson which makes it interesting!

Lisa and Lunagreen- Joan’s entire wardrobe is fantastic! I, too, covet it!

YUM….I’m going to make that oil….do you think important that it is almond? I already have avocado which is pretty odorless.

No the sweet almond oil is scentless. Since I am on a no buy and it was the carrier oil in the house I decided to use it. You can use any carrier oil such as jojoba, grapeseed, apricot kernel, avocado, fractionated coconut, etc. Just make sure you are slicing the vanilla beans before you submerge them in the oil so that the seeds/pulp can blend with the oil. I also added sea buckthorn essential oil to it (because we also have this in the house and I want to use it before it expires) which gives it a wonderful hue as well as skin nourishing properties. Let me know how you make out! And do give it time to marinate.

I learned that Hemingway liked absinthe. He also loved bars. So today I am wearing by Kilian A Taste of Heaven. Although lavender dominates here, I definitely get absinthe here too, and for some reason this scents reminds me of bars which artists like Hemingway would haunt.
By the way, if someone needs ides on what to wear on Friday (well, 1899 Hemingway is an obvious choice), here are some suggestions.
    – Any marine scent because of the Old Man and the Sea and Hemingway’s love for sailing. (I’ll probably wear Sel Marin tomorrow)
    – ELDO Vierges et Torreros – bull-fighting in The Sun Also rises
    – Chanel Jersey in honor of Brett Ashley’s fashion sense (“Brett was damned good-looking. She wore a slipover jersey sweater and a tweed skirt, and her hair was brushed back like a boy’s. She started all that. She was built with curves like the hull of a racing yacht, and you missed none of it with that wool jersey.”)

Diptyque 34 Blvd St-Germain. It’s such a throwback — it really smells like something that might have come out of the sixties or seventies. Nothing modern about it at all. It’s so great.

I really like 34 Blvd. Its vintagey, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink style is totally the opposite of what I normally wear, but Diptyque just does it so well.

I’m wearing Guerlain Jardins de Bagatelle today- I especially like the woodsy/musky drydown.

I’m also wondering whether to buy the Serge Lutens perfumes on my list now, or will they be less expensive later? I don’t want to miss out on the chance to get the smaller bottles while they’re still available. Anyone have any insight/advice?

If you think you will be really upset later if you miss out on the small bottles, you should probably get them now. I’ve not even smelled any SL, but Devas description of one awhile back has made me want to get it.

I’d be inclined to get the Lutenses while you can in the 50-mL size, because let’s be honest, if you’re anything like most of us you’ll never even get to the bottom of one of those, let alone a 100-mL bottle. (But I have 15 of his scents so I’m biased towards smaller bottles: I won’t live long enough to empty those no matter how hard I try.)

I’ve hosted two SL bottle splits (Féminité du Bois and Arabie) with that very fear. There are several other scents I’m contemplating doing that with (Daim Blond, Fille de Berlin, Sa Majesté la Rose, Ambre Sultan). I love the 50 ml bottles :( and really don’t need more than 15 ml of any of those.

Good to know. Those two are not too cheap at the discounters yet (the two splits I hosted were < $60 per bottle; the two rose scents are ~ $100), which is part of why I'm hesitating.

I found Serge Lutens on Fragrancenet, with some 50 ml bottles as low as $60. If you choose to buy from them, check for one of the lower discount days. They seem to have discounts that range from about 20% up to 35%. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Yesterday they were 35% and today they are 30%.

Had to take hubs’ car to have a tire repaired, rushed out of the house, grabbed a spritz on the way out the door. Which turned out to be MFK Lumiere Noire pour femme, a little heavy on a muggy day like today and I’m regretting it. I feel a little queasy.

Agreed. I had this happen recently while traveling. My sample of Eau Sauvage leaked all over the inside of my toiletries bag (didn’t ruin anything, luckily) and every time I opened it I got an unwelcome blast of scent. Before this happened I had been hoping to get a decant of Eau Sauvage, but now I’ll probably need to wait until next summer before I can stand to smell it again!

My, wasn’t Hemingway a pretty boy? I’m continuing on wearing my neglected fragrances. Today I used the last of a mini of Omnia Crystalline edp. This is unusual, because it isn’t a favorite of mine. I think that the alcohol may have evaporated, because it went on more as a perfume oil does. That weird omnia cap was probably the culprit. I probably didn’t get it in the bottle properly.

Have you all smelled Burt’s Bees Garden Tomato toner? It’s the perfect lemony, herbal, tomato vine scent. I put some into a spray bottle and am wearing it like a cologne today. If Burt’s Bees released this scent as an EDT I’d be first in line.

One caveat: Since it’s formulated as a toner, not a personal fragrance, the longevity of the scent is pretty poor. So – fair warning – it requires frequent re-spraying. Which is just fine with me in the summer :)

I’ve been neglecting some of my more special scents including today’s SOTD, Sous le toit de Paris by Atelier. Feeling very Parisian. :)

On the train this morning I caught a whiff of a really beautiful scent worn on the gal in front of me and I couldn’t help myself and asked her what it was. Her answer: 1996. I looked it up at work and it’s actually a Byredo scent, one I never paid much attention to (actually the whole line kind of has done nothing for me but for Rose Noir). I will say she had quite a bit on and in the humid heat we’ve been having I’m not sure I’d be as brave, but on her it was gorgeous and it got me interested. Anyone else a fan of 1996? Not sure I’ve seen much talk of it on NST.

Iris was not at all what I was smelling and not a note that I tend to gravitate to but… maybe this is the iris for me?

I can definitely see a man wearing this.

    Good morning Y’all….

I started out the day in Calvin Klein Truth, but it was getting on my nerves. Scrubbed! Now sporting Clean Skin….

SMELLY ALERT: Be on the lookout at your TJ Maxx for Tokyomilk perfume! I scored a bottle of Arsenic #17 for just $7.99 last night! WHEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! It will great in the fall/winter! I’m a fan of the bottle too…. :)

Usually I love wearing Truth, but today for some reason it just wasn’t working for me!

SsOTD are Yves Rocher’s Accord Chic (pleasant although seems to be very linear) and Neroli (meh), spritzed when purchasing some shower gels. First spritzs after a comando period, which will very likely continue from tomorrow on until August.

To anyone else who may be reading: I am looking to rehome a partially-used mini of the Yves Rocher Neroli that I got from the freebiemeet. Reply if you’re interested and have a US address.

In Nest Citrine. Very refreshing for a hot, humid day like today. Finally, I transferred the content of the rollerball to a decant bottle so I could spray it lavishly. Perfect! After 5 hours I can still smell it and enjoy it. When I was applying directly from the rollerball it was gone after 1 hour. Besides, the white flowers note is more noticeable now. The Nest perfume bottles are so beautiful! But unfortunately, none of the ones I have tried so far are full bottle worth.

I am loving it though, it’s as if I have layered Mad Madame and Coco! So far, not much of Alien. Anyway, on to Baseball…. Bear, you just reminded me that in the early 1990s I wore a fragrance by Naturistics called White River Musk…I loved it! and it was dirt cheap! From the drug store! Last time I looked a 3/4 full bottle was selling on ebay for $149, understandably so for the fragrance was nowhere to be found. I thought Naturistics might have gone out of business.

    1) SOTD: Eau de Soir over Korres Jasmin body shower gel. I smell great, if I do say so myself- very green & clean!

    2) This week I have been learning some new skills + will be getting some new responsibilities in the spring, so my brain has been in overload!

    3) But the weather has been so very perfect. Not humid. Not overly warm – mid 80s with a breeze, high 50s at night. Everyone seems to be asleep by 1 pm, and early morning commute everyone is calm and focused. What a truly nice summer.

That does sound like perfect weather. I have been under the impression that we’ve been having an unusually cool summer (that started July 5th) as I don’t think we’ve had a day with temps over 75. But I think it’s a micro-climate thing. I moved about 30 miles north in late April to a town that gets a lot of wind off the water, so it’s generally about 5 degrees cooler here than elsewhere.

If I lived anywhere else but Seattle, that might sound like a good thing. But since I do, it is not. I’m still waiting to break out my summer clothes!

Yeah, that’s the thing: The past few years we were in a drought situation on the West Coast, so temps were high and even cooler microclimes were hot. Now, though, the weather has been rather pleasant and moderate in the PNW.

Wearing Magazine Street today. Has anyone smelled Gabrielle? I have, and it was not at all what I was expecting. It’s very perfume-y, which of course is the Chanel style, but to me I don’t know that I could tell you it was supposed to be orange blossom and tuberose. I mean, I’m sure it is, but it’s so homogeneous …This one seems like it will be a mainstream hit. It’s very office-friendly and unobtrusive, IMO. I like the dry down more than the opening, by a mile. And of course, the bottle is stunning.

I took a bold step this week and ordered samples of TF Oud Minerale and TDC renamed Le 15 from Luckyscent. They were out of Naja samples. I could have driven over there but nooooooooooooooooooo,
So this is an noteworthy show of maturity on my part, I just usually buy the bottle blind. Since my big clean up a few weeks ago, I did the sample route and Oud Minerale made my mouth feel like metal/ wet rock all day. Whew! I was hoping it would be Wood Sage on steroids and therefore perfect, but I dodged a bullet. TDC Le 15 or whatever it’s name is now is a different story. I smell great!!

I’m in Commodity today- 2 sprays of Book and one little spray of Rain. The Book for obvious reasons and the Rain for below:

“And you’ll always love me won’t you?
    Yes.
And the rain won’t make any difference?
    No.”

And, “But after I got them to leave and shut the door and turned off the light it wasn’t any good. It was like saying good-by to a statue. After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain.”

Had some flowers at home but, since they lasted so short in this heath, I am now wearing now the original Diptyque Ofresia. To me, this is as close as one can get. I just have to be careful not to overspray as that can ruin even the best fragrance for me (unfortunately, I did it with Ofresia in the past, and then had to slowly get back to it).

And I am very curious to hear from Robin about Shi_so!

By Kilian Black Phantom. It’s hard to see the “Memento Mori” connection unless you would count Death by Chocolate. The listed notes are bitter coffee, rum, sugar cane, sandalwood and vetiver, but I get a chocolate effect. It’s a sweeter than I usually wear but deftly balanced. It smells GOOD, but TBH I bought it for the gold version of the travel atomizer which I found for a good price on ebay. ;)

It’s worth a try, Petunia, very wearable. I find many gourmands too heavy or cloying, and Black Phantom avoids that trap. BK counters have nice carded samples, too. :)

I’ve decided to do a Martha Gelhorn week … Journalist and war correspondent and married to Hemingway for a couple of years. Her article, Justice at Night ( available online ) is one of the most chilling pieces of writing I have ever read. There are some very good books about her, too. Wearing Pohadka.

That is an excellent idea! …If all else fails, I may have to shamelessly copy it for Friday. As it stands now, all I can do is think sarcastic, pessimistic things about big-game hunting and trench warfare…and an old dude in a boat trying to catch a marlin.

I’m glad you mentioned books about Martha Gelhorn, as I’ve been meaning to read about her. Any specific ones you’d particularly recommend?

        https://www.theguardian.com/books/2003/nov/01/featuresreviews.guardianreview8

I’d be tempted to go with Caroline Morrehead’s biography which is interesting and well researched but kind of standard biography style. Then I would read the book of Gelhorn’s letters as a second choice or alternative choice ( edited by Moorehead ) which gives greater insight into Gelhorn’s personality and writing skill. Moorehead knew Gelhorn as an old woman.
I had the exact same thoughts as you re. Hemingway. I tend to draw a line in the sand at big game hunting.

Wearing Lolita Lempicka after reading today’s post and comments on BdJ, about LL in particular, and more generally about wearing gourmands in warm weather. (I wore Gourmand Coquin last night, which I’ve discovered is divine in warm temps.) I’ll wear L’Eau en Blanc later.

I’ve never thought of LL as a gourmand – it’s always smelled like (fruit/herbal) tea to me. Lots of peeps are having queasy/perfume choice regrets today, and LL is one that often turns my stomach. It’s softer in warm weather, but still has that burnt note that can be hard to take in any weather. Fortunately it’s not making me queasy, though :)

I didn’t have any conscious thought about it connecting to Hemingway, but LL does remind me of Absinthe, which I read above was one of his favorite tipples. So there you go.

      http://www.ernesthemingwaycollection.com/about-hemingway/ernest-hemingway-in-spain

From here is where I drew my inspiration- I wore perfumes from Spanish and French houses…I wore perfumes that made me think of Idaho as Jalapeno described it to me (mountains-SSS Winter Woods or farms- Honeysuckle Bird, Equestrian, Jour Ensoleille) and Caribbean inspired scents(Vanira Morrea or anything with coconut, pineapple, papaya)…also, Cuba (anything with a tobacco note) and sailing (anything with a marine note or a perfume relating to sailing like Creed’s Love in White which is “inspired by sailing” with “marine harmony” (whatever that means!)…..I know it is an extremely loose interpretation but it worked for me…France and Spain alone should give you enough to go on!

Coming home from vacation today. If it weren’t for my kitties, I’d stay here forever, sigh. So glad you guys recommended Kauai; it did not disappoint! Zip lining was super fun the other day. We went to Waimea Canyon which was gorgeous, and to Wailua Falls, ate at food trucks which seems to be the Thing here, more beaches…
On the smelly front, I got an espresso soap from our tour of the Kauai Coffee farm and a hibiscus edp from a local brand called Mālie. I’m having buyers remorse since I seemed to like it more in the shop and didn’t notice the melon(!) note at the time. But the bottle is very pretty. Also, everything can be bought on Amazon these day, which somehow detracts from the specialness of buying something local, in my mind, anyway.
SOTD will be OJ Champaca since it’ll be faded by the time we get on the plane.

SOTD is Parfumerie Generale “Bois Naufrage”, in a rather feeble nod towards ‘The Old Man And The Sea’.

Notes are carob tree, sea salt, vetiver and ambergris. (Who are they kidding with ‘carob tree’? It’s fig leaf!

So, this is a pleasant light salty fig scent, with moderate endurance powers. It is infinitely preferable to an actual “Old Man And The Sea” fragrance, which would smell of sour sweat, decaying wood, stubborn pride, a mostly-shark-eaten fish rotting in the sun, and above all the utter pointlessness of this annoying book. (Can you tell it’s not my favourite Hemingway?) :^D

SsotD = Eau de Guerlain with Terracotta Le Parfum up next

Went shopping for a few necessities then a speed sniffing session. Tried Narciso EdT and EDP, also Narciso for Her, all were gorgeous but wound down to a musk that turns harsh on me. Oh well.

L’eau D’Issey was next and smells of beautiful flowers plus potpourri at the same time. Very beautiful and strange.

Last up was a quick spritz of two Banana Republic scents. Classic EdT has great citrus. 78 Vintage Green starts wonderful, a bit like Atelier Bois Blonds, but disappears quickly. There was a tester but no bottles to buy so money saved. If I ever find a bottle on a shelf it will be hard to pass up.

    Have a wonderful Wednesday, NST!

Went totally off-theme for the week and am wearing Rose Jam shower gel and Eau De Protection. Not exactly seasonal, but needed to feel strong today.

My vacation week has been bittersweet. Had a blast in Newfoundland. The island is beautiful, the people are fantastic, and the family that I met face-to-face for the first time felt like kin I’d known for my whole life. I’m already planning out my next trip back to the rock.

On my last full day there, my husband (who stayed home) called me to tell me that one of my pet axolotls had died out of the blue. I had him pull the other one out of their aquarium and put him in a quarantine tank until I could get home and change the water, but it was too late; less than twelve hours later, he passed away, too. I am totally heartbroken. I’ve had them for several years and raised them from babies. I’m trying to not let it cloud over my whole holiday, but it’s definitely going to be hard to return to work tomorrow.

Thank you all for the sympathy. <3 It feels a little silly to be this torn up over pets that I couldn't even cuddle with, but I guess they took up more room in my life than I realized.

Here is a picture of them that I took a few weeks ago (note that this is just a direct link to an image that is hosted on my imgur account. Robin, if this is not allowed, please feel free to remove it) http://imgur.com/a/U6a3X

I never really got around to officially naming them, since I was waiting for them to be full grown so I could determine their sex first. Even though I figured it out, I just started referring to them as "The Boys" and it stuck, even though they were well into adulthood. I miss them horribly already.
