Thursday scent of the day 7/6

Posted by Robin on 6 July 2017 182 Comments

Norquay oars

I'm late, but happy Almost-Friday! Plus, happy National Fried Chicken Day and happy Frida Kahlo's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

My sporting plans for today: sleep late (obviously), a bit of kayaking, perhaps a little walk around the lake, maybe an ice cream eating contest? And hopefully a bit of perfume testing later in the afternoon.

Reminder: on 7/7 we're doing Sports Friday...wear a sports scent! If you just can't go there, wear the sort of fragrance you think one might actually wear while doing something sporty.

Note: Our canoe paddles are perfectly functional but not quite so decorative as the Norquay ones shown (around $385 each).

    I like those paddles!

A bit more sun and few Celcius more than yesterday. Still very pleasant.

I’m wearing Jul et Mad Fugit Amor.

Aren’t those pretty? I don’t know if people just hang those on their walls or actually use them in water.

CSP Vanille Abricot, pretty much the polar opposite of a sport scent (I’ll think of something for tomorrow). It’s probably too hot for it but I was just in the mood for that dried-apricot-and-cooked-sugar goodness.

I would love some fried chicken. yum.

SOTD Jo Malone Grapefruit; I tried on a previously-untouched sample, and am surprised at how unlike grapefruit this is. It is the most masculine Jo Malone I have tried so far, with indistinct citrus and vetiver. Eh. I suppose I accidentally fit in the sporty theme :)

I can see this working in a candle or shower gel form! It was a bit weird and unexpected, in the same way I find jasmine & mint has very little to do with jasmine.

I agree with you this one not smelling like grapefruit and being on the masculine side. I have several samples of this that I usually just combine with another scent. It calms it down a lot. But, I definitely wouldn’t purchase a FB of this unless I was getting it for one of the men in my life.

Tedting my other Dusita sample, Le Sillage Blanc. Wow, this is potent stuff. A very interesting and well done scent. Perhaps a little too masculine for me but excellent all the same.

I am not a big lavender fan either but I actually liked MEM a lot!
And it is so much more than lavender. Flowers, fruits, green notes and I think there is ambergris in it too.
Also, the lavender used is unlike most other lavender notes out there.

The lavender has an earthiness, like a handful of soil and roots thrown in.
Not the screechy soapy or potpourri/sachet-like lavender I really dislike.

This is how I find it too. Very non-lavender-y in the ways that are bothersome.

I still like MAAI better (I looove that one, so gorgeous), but I was glad I tried MEM and have a sample, now I know not all lavender notes are scary. ;)

Sounds like a perfect day Robin! Probably join in the ice cream eating later. Bought too much (if there’s such a thing) for our BBQ and no one ate it so it’s all mine ????
I did some speed sniffing last night -that’s a sport I’m good at- all musks. I got the Sylvaine Delacourt sampke pack and can’t say I really like any of them. Dovana was probably the favorite but the far drydown smelled rubbery on me. The others were too sweet for me and Helcriss seemed out of place in this musk collection-it smelled like a citrusy aromatic thing.
Today I’m in a Sephora-made sample of Derek Lam Silent Street: clean white musk with a hint of cucumber which smells more green than aquatic. I’m enjoying it more rhan I thought I would.

Today’s SOTD is Annick Goutal’s Eau de Camille with notes of honeysuckle, privet, seringa and ivy, it was love at first sniff for me. It doesn’t last more than a few hours, so I brought Roger & Gallet’s Bouquet Imperial to work to respritz at lunch time. :)

Sleeping in is the bomb! Hope you’re feeling relaxed, refreshed, and working on a gorgeous summer glow????

As for me, nope. Sweaty Betty here, working in the van in this heat and humidity is the pits, but better things are around the corner. Every once in a while I get a whiff of the Tauer Orange Star I applied this morning and it’s quite soothing.

Weird weather here- there is a constant threat of storms- thunder booming from skies with hardly a cloud. It has me a bit edgy and the dog positively rattled. No problem with 4th of July fireworks, but a rumble of thunder a billion miles away and she’s a shaking whining shivery mess! Go figure. Plus, she wallpapers herself to me in any way possible. Hardly any sleep last night because I was so worried about her, plus my bed was vibrating like those 1970’s hotel beds that required a quarter to operate. She won’t eat, play, even refused a bone!

Leaving soon, but not soon enough for me.

It may be the static in the air rather than the noise that bothers her. I have had good luck with either a commercial Thundershirt
      http://www.thundershirt.com/

Or a t shirt tied so it fits slightly snugly. Then, they don’t receive the tactile sensations of their fur reacting to the atmospheric changes. This has helped some dogs immensely.

Hopefully the poor girlie can enjoy her bone in peace.

Well, I’m a bit of a skeptic, but good to know they work for some dogs. I have a friend who tried one with her dog and it did nothing, so I haven’t been inclined to try with mine. This is the first dog I’ve ever had that has reacted this way, and her sensitivity seems to be increasing. Up until recently, she didn’t pay any attention what so ever. Not sure why her response is changing so drastically, but it’s stressing me out to see her so stressed out. Yikes!

Happy birthday Frida Kahlo! I saw an exhibition of her work at the Detroit Institute of Arts a couple of years ago. Some of Diego Rivera’s work was on display too, but I only had eyes for Frida. It was fabulous. What an icon she was.

Question for anyone who wishes to chime in:

How hot is too hot for ordering fragrances? Has anyone had an issue where you think the fragrance was negatively affected by being shipped during hot weather?

    Thanks for any info!

I’ve never had a problem ordering in summer. Nothing came smelking off. Unless the package were going to sit in a hot mailbox in the sun for more than a day, not something I worry about. I’m assuming manufacturers don’t hold off on shipping their merch during summer months and I kind of doubt they have elaborate cooling systems when they ship to stores. I could be wrong however…

I live in the desert and, while I try not to order perfume between June and September, I break my little rule all the time and have never had a problem. I do try to take note of when it will arrive and get it in the house as quickly as possible.

Ditto this. It’s summer here ALL the time, and I’ve recieved almost all my samples and full bottles via mail. Never had a problem, and I think short term it’s probably not harmful. If a bottle was sitting for weeks or months in high heat, that might be another story, though.

I’m not going to make fried chicken in this heat, but I’ll honor the day by visiting KFC for dinner. I’m sampling AG Eau de Sud this morning. At first spray it leaned a little too aromatic for me, but that has subsided and now it’s citrus and basil. Quite nice.

An opossum has started visiting the back yard at dusk and driving the dog nuts. I’d prefer if it went elsewhere so I’m researching deterrents today. Anyone here with advice?

Those opossums are pretty unflapable. I had a Rottweiler a few years back who gifted me with a live one, trotting it proudly into the house from the back yard. At first, I thought it was dead, but nope, it was just playing opossum. I managed to get it outside and after a while it waddled off. The next evening, I look out my kitchen window, and see the (probable) same opossum perched up on my wood fence, birdogging me through the kitchen window. I went out to scare it away to avoid repeat doggie/opossum altercation and the bold thing just showed me his teeth, hissed at me, and sauntered on down the fence. So, good luck????

My little dog has had several extremely close encounters with possum in our back yard. Scares the absolute crud out of me each time. When confronted, they freeze and are easy for dogs to corner. Be very careful bc they can seriously injure a dog with their claws. No deterrents that I’m aware of, unless you can find their nest. I just look very carefully before I let the dog out.

And those teeth are quite imposing as well. They can definitely do serious physical damage. Also, they love to share their vermin- because of that encounter mentioned above, my dog ended up with ticks. It was horrific! I had to treat not only my dogs and myself, but also my house and my yard. I had been in this house for about 9 years at that time and NEVER saw a single tick. They are the most disgusting things with eight legs! Ugh! ????

I’m trying to get into the Sport theme, but I’ve never even sniffed a perfume with Sport in the name.

Instead, I’ve gone with Cristalle which does make me think of a sport where you wear all white and play it on a lawn of an Estate. Does that count?

In NEST Midnight Fleur today, trying to use up the splash bottle that’s lost its top notes. Still smells fine, just no more glorious pineapple in the opening. I’m kind of stumped on the theme for this week! I don’t have any sport scents. I think for tomorrow I might wear EL Bronze Goddess. That at least makes me think of beaches and swimming/surfing. Close enough, right?

On to the 4th ancient-chinese-voodoo-inspired scent from Essence of Chi. SOTD is “Earth”.

    Top: chamomile and immortelle;
    Mid: mimosa, broom and ylang-ylang;
Base: ambergris, guaiac wood, olibanum and birch.

It really doesn’t smell of anything much, so there’s no earthly chance this is my element. ;^P

Kanuka: I’m not so much worried of not finding the element that suits me, as of finding that I’ve got a 5x15ml coffret of stuff I can only ever use to clean down glass surfaces. I got these at the fragrance exhibition in Paris last year, and my memory is I liked one of them quite well. So either my tastes have changed, or this stuff has a seriously compromised shelf life.

I like the way ‘Essence of Chi’ ( used on Day 1 of this experiment ) has morphed into Chinese Voodoo. Maybe you just need to release any negative energy and call on the perfume goddess within to guide you on this journey? Also, Essence of Chi is a Dusseldorf perfumer? So there could also be an elemental warp in the whole China-German-Birmingham-Irish gig? Or, maybe your true element really is window cleaner? Very handy for Hausordnung day.

This one is a real shapeshifter! For three days I have gotten creamy sweet golden honey but today it is a balsamic amber on my skin…equally as lovely….and in the winter it smelled of sex and skank…go figure!

Ummm…I think so, but not 100% sure as all the different versions confuse me (Pour Le Soir, Grand Soir, etc, etc)…my best friend perfumista sent me a whole bunch of MFK in sample vials but this one she sent in 10ml decant so I have really been able to live in it. In the winter I got head on cumin but in the summer I am getting none of that. Something about it today reminds me of vintage Opium.

Morning, all. My sport this Foul Friday (the weather! who invented this revolting mess?) is to chair Exam Board, three hours of tedium, then discuss assessments with a team member….I get the all the best jobs! My fragrance for these sports is Oiellet Bengale, because why not?

You know, remembering holidays and missed opportunities is a pain. I keep thinking of Fumerie with Foxbins, and how I should have thrown caution to the winds and bought Pelargoniam by Aedes de Venustas. I loved it immediately, just the way I did Black Cashmere, so why oh why did I not buy it? Donatella wouldn’t have cared…the dear man wouldn’t have cared…Dakkie would have been positively pleased. But I didn’t. It was an uncharacteristic moment of restraint. Next year, I will return, and that perfume will be the first I buy, just see if it isn’t.

    Be well, all.

Off to Central Otago today where the temperature is a balmy -7C (20F) and I will be sleeping at my friend’s house in an unheated garden shed ( marketed as a rustic ‘small space’ ). The worst thing…apart from sleeping in all my clothes and a wool beanie…. is the outdoor shower and toilet because at this time of year the pooled water on the schist flagstones freezes …so skating will my sport. At least I’ll see some good stars and the milky way. I’m packing a selection of perfumes with me as I am taking a writing workshop on the five senses and we might need a bit of inspiration. Wearing Alaia Blanche.

25 C / 77 F but it is stuffy outside and clouds with rain, thunder and lightning are moving over my house right now.
So…perfect weather for Vetiver Blanc by Sultan Pasha Attars! On warm slightly sweaty skin this is even more sexy.

This morning I started out in Encre Noire btw. Great vetiver year round for me!

SOTD- Cristalle edt. My decant is getting low and I am trying to decide if I need to purchase a bottle or get another (third) decant.

Went grocery shopping yesterday to Fresh Thyme Market (similar to Whole Foods, but friendlier prices) and treated myself with affardable and fragrant gift- Shoyeido incense sampler and incense holder, about $ 6.00 for both. :)

OMG – What a crazy busy day!

SOTD = Hermes Kelly Caleche Parfum Extrait

I was too cheap to spring for the travel lock but I had since acquired one; however, I am too lazy to use it and so I am using the refill commando. This is a more concentrated version of the EDP ao to my nose, everything just smells more potent and the leather is definitely more prominent. The connection to sport is Kelly Caleche and her equestrian roots. I have ridden horses around a paddock but that doesn’t really count; does it? Oh, I used 5 sprays – and I think that is just right!

    Now what to wear tomorrow?

I have a little bottle of vintage Caleche extrait. So gorgeous! Now I need to go take a quick sniff.

And I meant to say someone gave me a mini Caleche something in my first year of swapping. I have to find it and compare!

I love this one. I like the edp but the extrait is perfection– so potent, so rosy, so smooth, and such a nice touch of leather.

PSA – the 1oz tester sprays can be found for crazy cheap on ebay. The spray function on those is COPIOUS and has a lovely built in cap that turns to cover the nozel. I have seen them on ebay for around $75.

I might need a back up bottle!
